    DB:3.70:Sun Balde 100 - Solaris 10/01 19

    Hi!

I'm brand-new to Sun and Solaris and I have few questions for expeirenced guys.

First, is it possible to load-up Solaris 10/01 with no addition CD or something like that?

Second, I already tried to load up this version but after finishing install and first reboot, I gor something as "cpu panic ...". I can read that fast to see what saying. Is thera a way to stop/freeze this screen at boot so I can read what says?

Third, I want to setup 2 Netra AC200 servers with this Blade 100. Is there a something as whitepapar how to do that ?

    Best regards and thank you,

    damiri

    DB:3.70:Sun Balde 100 - Solaris 10/01 19

You can install Solaris 8 with just the core operating system. If your using the web installer product, it should enable you to skip any software you want to avoid.

A "cpu panic" is quite serious. You might have some faulty hardware or an incorrect configuration. To stop the screen scrolling, you need to hit "Stop" and then "A" .

For whitepapers I use the sunsolve web site, you can do a search on their for various documents. You might also want to search throught he "infodocs" for information.

A Solaris 9 host was upgraded to Solaris 10 using the downloaded (blessed) 01/2006 release.

When I ran "updatemanager" I will speculate that there are no patches to apply and that I am fully registered with our school contract.

I get the message "Read Analysis Error".

I had the impression that the 01/2006 release would have fixed this annoyance. Could Sun verify that this is true?

DB:2.94:Read Analysis Error With Solaris 10 1/06 S10s_U1wos_19a Release kf

This is a known bug that will be fixed in the next release. The message appears when you have no updates to apply.

We did encounter a bad patch metadata a couple of weeks ago. To ensure that you do not have this cached, start updatemanager and select "Check for Updates" button. With smpatch - (i.e. command line version of update manager) enter smpatch analyze.

    Hello everyone !!!
I just got a Sun XVR-100 video card.
Will it work in the Blade 1000? I know it works fine in Blade 1500, 2000 and 280R which is rackmountable version of the Blade 1000.
    Does anyone have this setup?
Are there any special setup instructions?

Also, i have a Sun internal SCSI DDS-3 tape backup drive coming in. What software should i use? I'm running Solaris 10.
Will Solaris be able to perform backups with that drive without any special software? What about drivers?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sal.

    DB:2.79:Xvr-100 In Blade 1000 ds

The card is not supported on the Blade 1000. Even though the 280R shares components with the B1k the system firmware is different. A PGX32/64 should be considered instead.

Just out of curiousity - has anyone tried doing a VNC or XDMCP connection to a Solaris 10 x64 server rather then a Solaris 10 SPARC server ?

I asked because Solaris 10 x64 uses the Xorg X server and Solaris 10 SPARC appears to still be using the Sun X server.

    DB:2.74:Re: Solaris 10 + Cygwin Xwin On A Headless System x9

I posted previously at the end of this thread, and found that xscreensaver saves the day sort of. Once I found that after xscreensaver starts the keyboard is activated I decided to put xscreensaver in my startup programs that way it would activate the keyboard once I logged in. It worked just as expected but gnome-panel crashed. No worries just opened up a terminal sessions and started it up.

    # Once xscreensaver started, in about 15 minutes of no activity I found out where command was and then used java launch menu to added it to
    # sessions startup programs menu. That is located in Preferences - Desktop Preferences - Sessions

    /usr/openwin/bin/xscreensaver-command -lock

So once I was able to log in xscreensaver started but I had a problem logging out so I just closed the Xwindows session. Gnome-panel still must have been active because I recieved error stating that fact.

First time I just opened up terminal by right clicking and chosing Open Terminal. Then type in "gnome-panel" and it worked. I tried to log out again, but again I could not log out so closed window again. Then I log in again, this time the previous command did not work. So I did these commands.

    ps -ef |grep gnome-panel

    # found id of process and killed it

    kill id_that_found

    # started gnome-panel again.

    gnome-panel

    brando.

Until recently I was able to ssh from the Mac in my office -- runing

145074-01 SunOS 5.10: Trusted JDS Help rebranding patch
    124457-03 X11 6.6.2: xdm patch

and now when I try to run certain programs, namely Symantec NetBackup
Server (NBS) administrator interface, jnbSA, when I run the program I see:

X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.

and jnbSA fails. I removed these patches:

118666-27 JavaSE 5.0: update 25 patch (equivalent to JDK 5.0u25)
    118667-27 JavaSE 5.0: update 25 patch (equivalent to JDK 5.0u25), 64bit
    124457-03 X11 6.6.2: xdm patch

with no change. I have made NO updates to NBS, and what's
    even more weird, regular X11 programs such as x{eyes,biff,emacs}
    work fine.

I've tried tinkering with the contents of ~/sshconfig and /etc/ssh_config
    to no avail.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

DB:2.71:Error Message: X11 Connection Rejected Because Of Wrong Authentication 8x

Since only one program is failing, my guess it's operator error.Aside from my error of posting to the incorrect forum, your

I find that if you just start willy-nilly installing and trying to figure out ASM/RAC on your own, it will be a miserable failure. Start by understanding not only ASM but also RAC, what it is, how it works, why it works etc... If you don't understand something we cannot hold your hand every step of the way. Read the docs. Read other material.

A very good book to start with is: http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Automatic-Storage-Management-ebook/dp/B0010QI2K8

It was written in the 10g days, but all of the principles and commands work in 11g. There were some major changes in 11g to move all of the RAC configuration into ASM (no more separate ocr, voting disks etc...), but this book will be invaluable in helping you understand how it works.

    1) One of the biggest issues you are going to face is trying to use two different clustering tools to manage your cluster. Dump trusuncluster and use RAC clustering if you are going to do RAC. Use Sun clustering for non-database servers. The contention between the two can give you many, many headaches each trying to keep the cluster alive. Take it from someone who has built a cluster or two (actually 75 clusters - and most of these more than once).

    2) make sure you partition your disk devices such that ASM does not touch the first 1MB of the device (partition 0 = block 0-1, partition 1 = block 2-end) If you fail to do this, you will overwrite the VTOC on the device and it will cease to work forcing you to re-partition the device.

    3) On the ASMCA GUI there is a button to "change disk discovery". If your devices are in /dev/someDevName??p1 (using partition 1 from above) your disk string path will be /dev/someDevName*p1.

    4) make sure that these devices are owned - at startup time by the griduser:dbagroup and that both the oracle and grid user (sometimes the same) can read and write to these devices. test using dd. Look it up.

    5) good luck and welcome to the club.

Not sure how it happened. Original admin is no longer with the company. My guess it was installed with a -G in the global zone? Is there some magic that will apply the patch to the zone w/o backing out and reinstall in global zone? The install of 144500-11 is bombing out because zone does not think patch is installed:

Patch can be installed in local zone individually. But, 142909-% is kernel patch which you might have read in the read-me. Analyze before you take any action. Also, there are some special install instructions at the end of the read me of 142909, check it.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the help...

    Darren,
I had been using dd to extract the image of the CD but still ended up with a hsfs filesystem.
Mounting the CD then "cpio" extracted what I wanted into a ufs filesystem.

    Alan,
    Thanks for the links...
"Creating a Customized Boot CD/DVD for the Solaris Operating System for x86 platforms ",
didn't do what I wanted (It's based on the older Sol 10 CD structure)
but other links from the same site gave me enough pointers to get me going.

    Once again many thanks folks

    2 choice for you.
1 mknod map to device... change permission oracle can read/write on file from mknod
    2. change owner to oracle (read/write) on disk device name

    recreate ASM again...
if you don't see file device
    ALTER SYSTEM SET asm_diskstring=...

    Example:
    - if you disks are at /dev/md/rdsk PATH
    Assume: /dev/md/rdsk/d40
    # chown oracle:dba /dev/md/rdsk/d40
    # chnod 660 /dev/md/rdsk/d40

    - recreate ASM or STOP/start
    $ export ORACLE_SID=+ASM
    SQL shutdown
    SQLstartup

    Or ... use "dbca"
    - if dont see disk
    SQL alter system set asm_diskstring = ''/dev/md/rdsk';

    Solaris 11 experts,

First, the fs_type seems to be wrong. I have checked the MBR in a hex editor and it says 0xBF which is a new Solaris x86 partition (UFS). Don't know why Solaris 11 thinks it is incorrect... Secondly, the slices seem to be marked as unmountable (flag = 01)...

Beneath I submit some output from different tools.

Can anybody see what should be done to be able to mount it?

DB:2.60:How To Mount A Slice That Is Flaged Unmountable? jp

    !!!! SOLVED !!!!

Maybe this is basic knowledge, but I give it to you anyhow...

UFS file systems differ between Solaris X86 and Solaris SPARC (little vs. big endian).
Therefore, it seems like an external drive formatted using a SPARC cannot be mounted using an X86 machine.

I solved my problem with a virtual Linux environment. Linux has no native support for UFS, but a "hidden" read-only support exists so you don't have to compile a new kernel.

From the X86 machine, I wrote:
    1. su -
    2. mkdir /mnt/solaris
    3. mount -t ufs -o ro,ufstype=sun /dev/sdb /mnt/solaris (----- be sure that the "ro" flag is used)

It did NOT work to mount the drive using "/dev/sdb1" as one would expect, because then the mount tool writes "ufs_read_super: bad magic number" to the syslog.

I also learned that USB3 did not work together with the USB drivers for VirtualBox and VMWare Player (even if USB3 is compatible with USB2). Be sure to connect the drive into a "USB 2 port only".

    Have a nice day! :-)

You were provided a link to earlier releases.
That page does not name them as per each "Update", but shows them with their more precise release dates.

Solaris 10's "Update 3" is the one from November 2006.
3/05 = GA ('general availability', the very first official offering of the OS)
1/06 = Update 1 (the first time that GA was updated)
    6/06 = Update 2
    11/06 = Update 3
... and so on and so on.

You were being guided to the actual release you had asked for.

    Hi

Yes it's possible. Just make sure that they are installed in different directories e.g.,

    /opt/SunStudio8 and /opt/SunStudio12.

Studio 12 now installs links to /usr/bin (IIRC this is an option during the install). I'd suggest that you not choose this if you plan having multiple compilers concurrently installed.

When it is run using "smpatch" or "updatemanager", it also leaves a log message failure under "/var/tmp".

The permissions of the file "/etc/mnttab" are "-r--r--r--". For the two Solaris 10 machines that worked, the ownership was "root:root". For the three machines where the patch 137274-01 failed, the ownership was "root:other".

I tried to change the group ownership for "/etc/mnttab" to have group "root". I got a complaint that the operation was not applicable. These memory based files are unique.

Let me know if you still want the full results of any files. The file under /var/tmp had information in the beginning saying that it was an attempt to install a version of the package that already existed. It still had the final error message of "attribute verification" being wrong.

We have a lot of Sun Fire V100 machines which use Solaris 8. Currently, we have a plan to upgrade to Solaris 10. However, before doing that, we would like to know whether there is a performance issue for Solaris 10 on Sun Fire V100.

The purposes of our machines are running realtime applications and developing applications which are working fine on Solaris 8.

DB:2.55:Performance Issue For Solaris 10 On Sun Fire V100 Machine? k9

    Hi,
I am wanting to install Solaris 10 on some V100 servers and just wondering how you went ?

    Cheers

    Ron

The Sun Solaris 10 sparc is supported through a certification. So the platform will not be mentioned in the data sheet.

DB:2.54:How To Make Solaris 10 Operating System 11/06 Cd Install Onto A Pc ac

I have the Solaris 10 Operating System 11/06 CDs from Sun.
I am now trying to install the O/S onto a new internal HDD.
Powering up with the first CD (03-104927-01) in the drive, the monitor reports "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".
Is not the CD a system disk?
How do I install Solaris from the CDs?

    Additional information:
    BIOS Setup information:
IDE Channel 0 Master - HDD
IDE Channel 4 Slave - DVD

    Thanks for the help

DB:2.54:How To Make Solaris 10 Operating System 11/06 Cd Install Onto A Pc ac

In your first post you discuss CDs (plural) as if you have the 4-disk or 5-disk set.
You do mention that the optical drive is a DVD.
Now you describe the optical media as being DVDs.

In the future, you need to be precise with details if you hope for `remote` assistance, such as in an Internet discussion forum.

    ---
I can only guess that your desktop computer's drive just has some occasional issues with various media.
Perhaps it is old and has issues reading the specific position where DVD boot sectors might be.
Booting from media has no relationship with what might already be installed.
Your laptop is likely newer with a fully capable drive.
That laptop optical drive might be better able to read DVD boot sectors.

I see two alternatives left to you.
Replace the drive, even if only temporarily with a borrowed drive...
    else...
Download and burn the CD variety of Solaris.

I have just installed Sun Solaris 10 on a Gigabtye (GA-K8NS Ultra-939 Mobo) + AMD64 3500 Computer. Everything went pretty smooth (even the display etc with the ATI graphics card), but the networking doesn't seem to work.

Looking at the Mobo documentation I found that it has two onboard LAN chips

    Marvell 8001 chip (Gigabit LAN)
    ICS 1883 chip (10/100 LAN)

if i do a ifconfig -a, I only see the loop back adapter..

Any tips on what I should be pursuing further.

    Thanks a lot.

DB:2.54:Problems With Enabling Network On Sun Solaris 10 Install cs

Investigate your hardware and get the names of the two nic's. Then you will have to plumb the nic's to set them up using ifconfig xxxx plumb.
You should then be able to see the nic's.

At the OK prompt to a probe-all

    Hope this helps!

    DB:2.54:Patching Weekly k9

Long story short, We have a new requirement to patch basically weekly.

So we are POC'ing OC(I have used it for over 2 years at a previous client)

So I patched a client selecting the latest 10_Recommend(4/21) and the full 3/30/11 Baseline. 100 or so patches go in

Ran a CVE report and it shows 10 issues, told it to fix, it applied 1 patch.

Ran another CVE, it shows 2 issues, and 2 patches, tell it to fix, and says nothing to do..... Hmmmm... OK

Download patchdiag.xref from 4/30 and run PCA.

It shows the following 92 missing patches!!! Some over 100 days old and even one over 500 days old

Is there a way to tell OC to patch from the latest patchdiag.xref?

    Using /var/tmp/patchdiag.xref from Apr/30/11

The closest thing would probably be the "Check Security" built in profile. This will always look for the latest revs of patches that are marked as Security fixes. Same thing for "Check Bug Fix", except it's all the patches that are not marked as Security related.

If your main goal by patching weekly is to avoid Security issues, I would run that weekly.

    Mabeken,

What OS do you want to do this for? Solaris does not support natively the SCSI emulation provided by ESX neither buslogic or lsi (at this moment). Hopefully that will change. As far as creating IDE drives and install Solaris on them, everything can be done on ESX, I did that on ESX 2.1 and 2.5.

DB:2.54:Sap Ep6.0 On Sap Was 6.40 On Sun, Solaris c1

    Hi Neeta,

If it is not on the PAM than it is not supported by SAP. That means that if you open up a customer message for an unsupported platform, you are very likely not going to get support. But do check the PAM regularly because it does change.

With that said, if you want to try it to on a sandbox or dev system with solaris 10, give it a shot as long as you are just testing with it. One problem that I see is that SAPInst may detect the OS level and not let you continue.

DB:2.53:How To Static Compile Program? pk

If you are asking how to link system libraries statically on Solaris 10, the answer is that you cannot, and you do not need to.

In particular, a shell is a user program, not part of the kernel, and links system libraries dynamically. For example, run ldd on the binaries for sh, csh, ksh, bash, and see that they use dynamic system libraries.

If you are asking about something else, please explain in more detail what you want to do.

You may have already got the answer you needed, but here is a little more detail on what is probably happening:

Sun has a function that screens for page 83 SPC-3 spec violations that
was based on SPC-3 rev 14. At that time it roled out , apparently EUI-64 descriptors could only be 8 bytes long. Now 12 and 16 byte lengths are also
supported. Sun should have this in there system as a bug by now. It shoudn't stop anything from working, but is annoying... Opening a call with Sun like the other said would mostly likely get you to this information too.

Which version of Solaris 8 are you trying to install? The minimum for a sunblade 1000 is 10/00 version, although the 07/01 version is the first that does not require immediate patching.

Are you using the installation cd, or the software 1 of 2 cd? Which ever you are using, try the other. I usually have better luck with the software 1 of 2 cd.

This is a pretty open question. Of course there are differences related to the platform. But is there anything in particular outside of platform expected differences that you are interested in?

Do you mean, are the packages all the same, does it work the same, does it look the same?

I have the x86 version installed here, and I previously was using the Sparc version. I have not noticed anything yet, although, one difference for me is that the most recent version I downloaded of Solaris 10 x86 has the Java Desktop System built in, and I am using that.

Since my Sparc was a server without a graphics console, I did not even try it there.

Can you be more specific in your question?

If it links against OS libraries, then your probably in trouble.

Call your local Sun Rep and see if you can buy a license for Sol 8 and then ask them or the client for media.

As I want to know that is there any firewall available inbuilt with Solaris 10 like IPTABLES in Linux.

Also as I have heared about Sun Screen Firewall was available upto Sun Solaris 8. Why it was stopped after Solaris 9 10.

Can you give me more details on same.

    Thanks
    Rajan

    DB:2.52:About Inbuilt Firewall In Solaris 10 97

The built-in firewall in solaris is called ipfilter.

It is much like iptables with a slightly different syntax but it is just as easy to use.

To start using it all you need to do is edit two files and give two commands (with fingers crossed).

You can find extensive instructions elsewhere but here is a quick overview.

Edit /etc/ipf/pfil.ap and de-comment the appropriate device name (use ifconfig -a to figure out what it is).
Edit /etc/ipf/ipf.conf to your liking. Check online documentation for the syntax. Becareful since it reads from top to bottom and other things that iptables does differently.

Here is a quick example of one of my machines*(careful this is an output from 'ipfstat -io' and not what you would necessarily want.

    #this machine talking with others
pass out quick on bge0 proto tcp from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/32 to any keep state
pass out quick on bge0 proto udp from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/32 to any keep state
pass out quick on bge0 proto icmp from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/32 to any keep state
    #open up trusted local networks
pass in quick on bge0 from xxx.xxx.xxx.0/24 to any
    #outside world
pass in quick on bge0 proto tcp from any to any port = ssh
pass in quick on bge0 proto tcp from any to any port = 80
    block in on bge0 all

Those last two passins are wide open but I use sshblack to monitor those ports. You can easily modify that for ipfilter from iptables.
    http://www.pettingers.org/code/sshblack.html

After you are all set do
    svcadm enable pfil
    svcadm enable ipfilter

There are a pile of things that may cause either pfil or ipfilter to fail (svcs -vx to check) but you can google the answers or search these forums for how to fix them.

    ouch...

Thats a tough one... Well, core files will be useful. How about any hs_err files?
    Its crashing daily?

I am sure is more of a biz decision than a tech one :) We had a machine that crashed daily, but the scripts restarted the process. We didnt know that, till we enabled coreadm, imagine the shock when we see the file system filling up with all the cores generated, sitting there pretty for the a long time :)

How about someone sitting in front of the terminal to monitor it to crash? :) If this is an option, add -XX:+ShowMessageBoxOnError
Start in console. So all the error/system out are printed to console.
When it crashes again, you should see something similiar to the form

Unexpected Signal: XX, PC:xxxxxxxx , PID: xxxx
An error has just occurred, do you want to debug the problem?

At this time, u shld pstack the pid and cut the thread with the signal(usually the very top). Note: You should not leave the system unattended then, as the process will just hang there, rendering those "monitoring / fail / restart" scripts useless.

Tough eh? Best to enable coreadm ;)

Oh ya, the vendor shld support minor releases of 1.3.1... think _15 as a bug-fix version.

Can someone tell me how to do this simple task?

The Solaris 10 Documentation CD no longer has an installer. You can view the documents directly from the CD or copy the CD contents to a local directory and view them from there.

    DB:2.51:Problem Installing On 40gb Drive z1

    Hi,

I've just tried installing solaris 8 on an ultra 5 with a 40GB drive, I downloaded the cd images (I have the media kit, but the images are newer from sun) anyway I thought that the install would recognize disks over 8 Gig. this one didn't (release: Solaris 8 10/01 s28s_u6wos_08a SPARC) is there something i missed or is there a patch that i need?

    thanks
    Wes

Hey. That's great! You wouldn't have had this problem if it was a brand new drive.
This was a used drive with a customized Solaris 2.6 or 2.7 previously installed.

    Hi,
there is no official recommendation. SC31(u4) has been qualified against S10, so it'll work well.
    But SC32(u2) has improved functionality.

If I would do an upgrade to S10 I would also upgrade SC to 32.
