    Thanx for any help!

    DB:4.21:System Restore Fails - System Restore Did Not Complete Successfully. Your Computers System Files And Settings Were Not Changed a3

    Hi Lynn,

    1. Did you try torun System restore usingthe different system restore point?
    2. What made you to run system restore?
    3. Which antivirus application are you using on your computer?

    If you haven’t tried using the different system restore point, use the other system restore point and check.
    Malware scanning software can have built-in protection systems that prevent other software programs from altering their structure - including System Restore. When System Restore is unable to use the files of the scanning
    software, System Restore fails and the following message appears:

    System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

    To successfully restore your system, temporarily disable virus scanning and the built-in protection. Refer to the following link.
    Disable anti-virus software
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software
    Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily
    disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    As the issue diagnosing steps, refer to the following method. Check if you can experience the issue in ‘Safe mode’; if safe mode works fine then set the computer to ‘Clean boot’ state to check for software conflicts.

    Step 1:
    Start your computer in safe mode.
    Windows 7.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Step 2:
    Keep the computer on a clean boot and check for the issue status. If everything works fine after a clean boot, you can infer that some third party services are causing the problem. Proceed with the remaining steps to pin-point
    out the third party service. After you figure out the problem causing program, you may have to update or install a higher version of the program, if you seldom use that software you can consider uninstalling it.
    How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

    Note: Please go through the section:
    How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

    I recommend that you run Disk CleanUp or cCleaner to remove temporary files as this will reduce scanning times by security software.

    Boot the computer to safe mode with networking and download and install Malwarebytes (freeware version for home users only), update definitions and run in safe mode. Disable other security software whilst you are doing scans.

    DB:4.09:Restore Point To Previous 7c

    If you have Time Machine "turned on", it should be keeping interim snapshots that it is saving to your disk. Perform a sync with your Time Machine drive, and those "local snapshots" should be available in order to perform a restoration. You will likely have a point yesterday you can choose, provided you were active on your computer yesterday.If you want a specific file, then "Enter Time Machine", using your menubar icon, then select the restore point and navigate to the file, then restore that file.To restore the entire system, use the Recovery Partition to restore from your Time Machine backup. (Boot to the Recovery Partition, by holding down the option key, while booting. Then select the Recovery drive. Follow the menu that appears after booting.

    can anyone help me to restore the system???plzzzz

    DB:4.09:Restore System ss

    You haven't given us any information about your computer so here is general information:
    Most laptops and many OEM (HP, Sony, etc.) desktop computers come with a factory restore image on a special partition on the hard drive. The factory restore process is normally invoked by pressing a Function key (like F11) at computer startup. There will
    be a message as to which Function key to press on the screen when you first start your computer. You can also refer to your computer manual, or the computer mftr.'s website, or contact its tech support to see how to restore your computer to factory condition
    since each computer mftr. does it differently - sometimes even between models.

    These machines also usually have a utility with which to create physical recovery discs in case the hard drive needs to be replaced or the factory restore image is somehow damaged. If you did not create the physical recovery discs and/or damaged the recovery
    image, contact the computer mftr.'s tech support to order a recovery disc set. This is normally very inexpensive, around $20-25.

    how do you restore a vista laptop to fatory settings/ PLEASE

    DB:4.09:System Restore x7

    How to obtain Vista recovery Media and/or use the Vista Recovery Partition on your computer.

    There is no legal free Vista download available.

    Contact your Computer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of VistaRecovery disk/s.

    They normally do that for a small $ cost.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Also, ask them if you have a Recovery Partition on your Computer/Laptop to restore it to Factory settings.
    See if a Manual came with the computer, orgo to the Manufacturer's website, email or phone them for info on how to do a Recovery.
    Normally, you would press F10 or F11 at Startup to commence the Recovery Process..
    Another way I have seen on some models is to tap F8, and go to a list of Startup options, and start a Factory Standards Recovery from in there, by selecting the Repair computer option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Ask them if you can also make Recovery Disk/s from the Recovery Partition in case of Hard Driver failure or System Crash.
    They will tell you how to do that.

    Each Computer Manufacturer has their way of making Recovery Disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a proper Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc).
    A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.
    The Product Key determines which Vistaversion gets installed.
    There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System.
    If a clean install is required with a proper Vista DVD (not HP, Dell Recovery Disks):
    Go into your Bios/Setup, or Boot Menu, at startup, and change the Boot Order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the Boot Order, then reboot with the disk in the Drive.
    At startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, to go into Bios/Setup, or F12 for the Boot Menu
    Hi jloller,
    To get around the error code, please follow these steps.
    1.Close all the applications that are not required for performing backup.
    2.Make sure that you have sufficient disk space on all the drives where System Restore is enabled
    3.Disable any antivirus/firewall installed on the computer. They can very much interfere with the backup process.If antivirus software is currently being used, close it from its icon on the system tray (a small icon next to the time).
    Close it by right-clicking the icon and selecting Disable. Refer to the documentation for the antivirus software for more information on how to disable it.
    4.Perform Clean Boot to avoid every possible scenario of a third party service interfering with the backup process. Once the system is in clean boot state, run system restore.
    Refer:How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
    Notes:
    ¯Running the computer without firewall or the anti-virus software is a potential threat to the computer; make sure to enable the security software after completing the troubleshooting steps and after identifying
    the issue.
    ¯Ensure that you put your computer back to normal startup mode after completing the troubleshooting steps. Steps are available in the article given above.
    Hi Paul,
    What exactly are you trying to do?
    If you are referring to System restore in Windows 8, refer to the following information.
    System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.
    Refer to “To restore your PC to an earlier point in time: section from the following link.
    How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
    Important: System Restore will not revert any of the non-system files like documents, email, music, etc. to a previous state. These types files are completely unaffected by System Restore. If your
    intention with this tool was to recover a deleted non-system file, try using a file recovery program instead of System Restore.
    DB:3.91:Vista System Restore Wont Restore 3c
    Hi cathywo,
    Without knowing what you have tried so far, let me give you some suggestions.
    If you thing the computer is locked up, reboot the system, or if that doesn't work, push and hold the power button for 5 seconds to force a restart. It's possible your system will boot back up and continue from where it froze. If it does not, Disable your firewall
    and Antivirus software program.
    If that does not work, you might perform a Clean Boot nd try to run your System Restore without all the startup programs running. To do this,
    1. Click
    Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
    Continue.)
    2. On the
    General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3. Under
    Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4. Click the
    Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click
    Disable All.
    5. Click
    OK.
    6. When you are prompted, click
    Restart.
    7. Log back into your Account.
    8. Try to re-run your System Restore
    If System Restore still does not run, you might try a Repair Install. You will need your Vista Installation disc for this and it will reinstall your Vista OS without affecting the data, settings and applicationson the pc. You will, however, have to reinstall
    your Windows updates.
    *** You should backup your system before you perform this ***
    ITEMS THAT WILL BE RESET TO DEFAULTS:
    Computer Sound Event Scheme - See:
    How to Change a Computer Event Sound in Vista
    Vista Services - See:
    Visual Effects Options - See:
    Windows Mail - To Save and Restore your messages and settings, see the section:
    How to Backup and Reset Windows Mail Device Drivers - Be sure to have these handy to reinstall. They do not always remain after the repair (upgrade) install.
    DB:3.89:System Restore Hangs At Window With System Restore Is Initializing For Hours Never Finish 38
    Hi Joey,
    I would suggest you to follow the methods to fix the issue
    First, check if you have sufficient disk space on all the drives where System Restore is enabled. To store restore points, you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space on each disk that is 500 MB or larger. For more information refer this link.
    How much disk space does System Restore require?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-much-disk-space-does-System-Restore-require
    Method 1: Check if the Volume shadow copy service is started or not. If not started then start the service and check if it helps.
    a. Click Start, type services.msc in the search box and press Enter.
    b. Search for the service: Volume shadow copy.
    c. Right click the service and click start.
    d. Try to perform system restore and check if the issue is resolved.
    Method 2: Let’s run a virus scan:
    Microsoft Safety Scanner
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
    Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.
    Method 3: Temporarily disable security software and firewall settings and check:
    Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon
    as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Disable antivirus software
    Forgive me if I assume wrong, but I assume that your are trying to run system restore because something happened to your pc that you are trying to fix. One of the signs of pc infection is that interferes with the ability of system restore to function properly. If that is the case may I suggest
    Go here and download Hijackthis
    http://dsvs.org/5/HijackThis.exe
    Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\\HJT\\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here.
    http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack
    Please do not be tempted to "fix" on your own. Hijackthis is a very powerful tool, if used incorrectly can cause system problems
    Hi,
    Have you recently installed or uninstalled any software or hardware?
    I would suggest you to restart the computer and perform startup repair and then try to do system Restore.
    Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly.
    Startup Repair is one of the recovery tools in the System Recovery Options menu. This set of tools is located on your computer's hard disk and on the Windows installation disc.
    Hi PAL,
    1. Have you made any changes on your computer prior to the issue?
    Perform the following troubleshooting methods:
    Method 1:
    I would suggest you to perform System File Check to fix the corrupted system files.
    Refer the following link to perform System File Check.
    How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
    Note: It may ask for windows DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.
    Method 2:
    Check the startup type of Volume shadow copy service in services window.
    Follow these steps:
    a. Click Start then type services.msc in the search box and hit enter.
    b. A new Services window will open.
    c. Search for the Volume shadow copy service.
    d. Check the Startup type.
    e. Make sure the start- up type is automatic.
    f. If the service is stopped then start the service.
    g. Select Properties and in the Start-up type select Automatic
    Method 3:
    Disable any third party anti-virus installed on your computer and check if that works.
    Note: Turn on the security software once the troubleshooting is done.
    I am using Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1. I used System Restore
    to undo system changes to my computer. I want to undo this System Restore operation, but System Restore says there are no restore points. How then can I undo this?
    DB:3.83:Where Does System Restore Keep Its Restore Points fm
    Hi Mike,
    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.
    Based on the information you have provided, I understand that you are trying to undo the changes made from system restore in Windows 7. I will certainly help you with this issue.
    Every time you use System Restore, a restore point is created before proceeding, so you can undo the changes if they don't fix your problem. If you use System Restore when the computer is in safe mode or using the System
    Recovery Options, you cannot undo the restore operation. However, you can run System Restore again and choose a different restore point, if one exists.
    Refer to the link.
    Hi,
    1. Do you have any security software installed on the computer?
    2. Are you able to boot into Windows after system restore failure?
    3. Have you made any recent changes on the computer?
    If you are able to boot into Windows then I would suggest that you clean boot procedure and check if it helps the system boot time.
    There is a possibility that some third party programs installed on the computer is causing the issue.
    To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps
    eliminate software conflicts.
    Refer the below link to know more about clean boot procedure.
    How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    Reset the computer to start as usual
    After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
    a) Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    c) On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
    d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
    If you still want to perform system restore then you may try other system restore point or try system restore from the Windows recovery environment.
