My present Comcast-furnished HD-DVR is getting full. I understand that Comcast now has higher capacity units. I would like to save at least some of the programs I have recorded in HD format. Is there any way I can transfer stored programs from one HD-DVR to another? Or to an external hard drive and then reload from the hard drive into the new HD-DVR?

DB:4.42:Transfer Saved Programs From One Hd-Dvr To Another 1a

I don't understand why Comcast wouldn't support taking your current Comcast DVR to their office and having them do the transfer to a replacement unit.

There is no technical reason that this couldn't be done. To me it would make good business sense to support customers who want to upgrade or especially those who have a failure with their DVR and need a replacement.

A suggestion? Order the HD DVR and tell the CSR you wish to keep the SD DVR for an undetermined period. When the installer arrives tell him you want to keep both the SD and the HD connected temporarily. He can set each to use just a single coax (they will each have just one tuner). Do no recording on the SD box but watch the shows you want then disconnect it and call Directv to deactivate it. Connect the 2nd coax cable to the HD DVR, re run satellite setup and specify dual tuners. Viola.

If you have a HR34 Genie, open your menu - smart search - DEXTER - select the second Dexter HD - Coming Soon will be the top entry. If you select that to "record series" it will set up a Dexter series even though there are no upcoming new episodes in the Guide. This feature is available on many popular series that are currently off season.

This is a new and great feature because heretofore you'd have to wait until a week or so prior to thefirstepisode to set up a series and you may well forget to do so.

We also have DIRECTV in another part of the house and that can record hours and hours of programs. Is there a problem with my Comcast HD DVR?

    DB:3.46:Hd Dvr Recording Length m8

Comcast supplied DVR's come in many drive sizes, the older boxes have smaller hard drives.

The DCT / DCH 3412/6412 have 120GB drives

The DCT / DCH 3416/6416 have 160GB drives

The newer DCX 3400's come in 250 or 320GB drives

The newest DCX 3400's and DCX3501's (RNG200) for AnyRoom come with 500GB drives.

    Same for Scientific Atlanta / Cisco DVR's, 160 or 250 for 8300's, the Cisco RNG200's have 250, 320 or 500GB drives.

There are a lot of old DVR's that will not die and continued to be recycled. You might want to check your local office if you can swap for a larger DVR.

Western Digital drive expanders will work on the Scientific Atlanta Cisco DVR's, and in a few area's on most Motorola DVR's. Expander's on Motorola DVR's continue to be rolled out to more area's into 2013.

Post the model of your Comcast DVR for specifics.

SInce it sounded like you were not trying to archive the old recordings forever, you might be able to talk verizon into letting you delay return of the old box. In other words, don't install the new DVR until you have viewed as much as possible. Even if you end up paying one month's DVR service for the old box, as well as the service fee for the new box while it is not hooked up, it will be cheaper that buying a device to back up the HD programming in standard definition for later viewing.

The ONLY way to transfer programming is to connect the DVR via analog to a tuner card on aPC or a DVD recorder and record the material in real time. My experience has been that new material comes along so rapidly you soon forget you lost any.

As to program series setups, a photo(s) of the various screens will help you remember to set everything up anew.

Only by using a video capture card and software to play back the DVR in real time. Most common capture cards are std def using composite cables, there are also a few HD models that use component cables from the HD DVR to the HD capture unit, most are external models that then use USB to the computer.

I'm getting a new HD DVR installed tomorrow. I have shows saved on my existing "non-HD" DVR. Is there a way to transfer the saved shows to the new receiver? Or will I just lose them when the old receiver goes away?

DB:3.07:Transfer Recorded Programs From One Dvr To Another 31

    jeffdube,

As eluded to by other users, I stand by my initial response about the inability to transfer content from one DVR to another. And as discussed, copying content to a new internal(or external) hdd that is to be used in the same DVR is a completely different thing. In fact, I would guess that the procedure that Weaknees performs is akin to what another forum user posted recently regarding copying content from a failing external eSATA drive to a new external eSATA drive for use on the same DVR(see below for those instructions). So, it appears that whatever Weaknees is charging for can be done(probably "considerably cheaper", since the HDCLONE basic software the forum user used costs about $20) by yourself. However transferring content from the DVR's "internal drive" to another drive(for internal...OR...external usage) may not work with the instructions below.

Instructions for upgrading an external eSATA from an other forum user:

"I recently swapped a 1 TB Cavalry external E-SATA drive with 2 TB Cavalry E-SATA drive connected to an HR21-700 DVR and I was able to preserve the recorded content. If you are interested, here is the process I used.

    (1) Connect the new unformatted drive to the DVR and let the DVR format it. This is necessary to create the necessary 3 empty partitions the DVR expects to see.

    (2) Connect both drives to a PC. In my case I used a Windows 7 system that only had USB ports which is ok if you have enough time on your hands.

    (3) Use HDCLONE (or other cloning software) to copy the partitions:

    a) Partition 1 is 500mb swap file and you can ignore it

    b) Partition 2 is 15GB directory space - copy partition 2 on the old drive to partition 2 on the new drive. On my system this took about 20 minutes over the USB ports.

    c) Partition 3 is where the content is. copy partition 3 on the old drive to partition 3 on the new drive. At the end of the copy HDCLONE will offer to reorganize the space on the newer larger drive - I played it safe and said "do nothing". The process took 10 HOURs to complete so you may want to manage your downtime accordingly.

    (4) Connect the new drive to the DVR and restart the DVR - all of your programming should be there. I went from 50% free on the 1TB drive to 80% free on the 2TB drive, and we have not had any glitches on the new drive since. At this time it has been about 4 weeks of watching older content and adding newer content."

I originally had one HD dvr receiver in our main room and one standard receiver in our bedroom. I recently exchanged the standard receiver for a HD receiver to allow us to enjoy our recorded programs in our bedroom. My question is do I need to run a cable from the HD dvr to the new HD receiver in our bedroom to be able to watch recorded shows or do I just have to plug the original coax cable into it?

DB:3.06:New Receiver Hook Up To Add To In-Home Dvr 8m

Press the HD DVR remote's "Dash (-)" button .... does it echo "SWM Connected ..." on your TV? If yes, then you have a Single Wire Multiswitch dish setup and can call DirecTV to activate Whole Home DVR sharing on your account. What model is your HD DVR? If it's an HR24, you're all set. Otherwise you'll need a DECA coax network adapter for your HD DVR. Your H24 HD Receiver will then see recordings on your HD DVR.

If you don't have SWM, then call DirecTV and request a Whole Home DVR upgrade. They'll replace your dish and upgrade other stuff.

Thevery old from more than a year ago were fine. The box serving my VCR was also effected since it recieved the signal from the HD box. The VCR tapes were fine. So it was not the TV but the stupid box!!!!!. I just saved Hundreds of $$$$$.

Now I am told a new box will be sent out,but this will erase my previous recordings,Right? It is NOT so surprising that the technician failed to mention this. I wonder how many people reconnect their boxes thinking the shows will still be on the new DVR after the old DVR was returned?

I have a good VCR/DVD recorder as far as VCR's go- a Panasonic DMR-EZ485V. It has a HDMI AV OUT connection unlike our TV with no HDMI connections.

The connections available on VCR :RF input/output, Audio/Video output terminals (DVD/VHS COMMON OUT) , AUDIO/VIDEO input terminals, S VIDEO input S VIDEO output terminal, Audio/Video output terminials (DVD PRIORITY OUT), DIGITAL AUDIO OUT, COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals.

So is there a way to transfer the numerous DVR recordings from the DVR that are good to a VCR tape?

with one HDDVR you can record two shows, watch a recording on the DVR and stream a show to an HD receiver, all at the same time, if you get another HDDVR, you can record up to four shows and stream up to 2 remote receivers at the same time. and no, you cannot transfer shows from one HDDVR to another.

My box does the same thing if I unplug it (once every two or three months). When it turns on it makes one click then powers off. I figured out what I have to do when I plug the power cord back in is to press the power button as soon as it powers off. I may have to do this two times. This seems to make the box "come alive" and boot up. I know that I have a bad box but this is something that I can live with as it has no other issues.Message Edited by MikeT on 02-23-2009 07:57 AM

Currently have on HR21-700 HD-DVR and two SD receivers. Considering changing out one of the SD receivers for either an HD receiver or an HD-DVR, conntected to the HR21-700 using the whole home system. Have reviewed the descriptions and various tech forum posts on this, but want to confirm my understanding of the system configuration is correct.

    1) The new HD (replacing one of the existing SD receivers) is connected to the coax going to the antenna via a 'multi-switch' (term from Directv customer service rep).

    2) Existing HD-DVR is connected to my wireless router using the Cinema connection kit (which has a wireless connection to the router and a wired connection to the HR21-700).

Is this correct so far? Does the new HD receiver also need to be connected to my wireless router somehow?

With the HR21-700 and an HD receiver I understand I can view any recorded programs from the HD receiver and set any programs to record from the HD receiver (just as I can from the HR21-700). Can you also pause a live show you are watching from the HD receiver?

If, alternatively, I change out the existing SD receiver with a new HD-DVR, is a Cineman connection kit required at each HD-DVR to connect them to my wireless router or does only one need to be so connected? Does the new (second) HD-DVR still have the 'multi-switch'?

With two HD-DVR's, I expect can see each DVR's list so to view it's recorded programs on either set. When you set a program to record, can you choose which DVR to record to from either DVR or do you need to record to that DVR (e.g. from DVR 1, can I set to record a program to DVR 2 or does it need to record to DVR 1)?

Not currently. The next level of the IMG (1.9) is planned to have that function. The new level is currently being beta tested and will be available sometime in the not too distant future. Verizon has not announced any availability date for the new level, so all we can do for now is wait, but it will probably be some time this quarter.

Last year I had a similar problem with my SA 8300HD and was using a Western Digital 1TB Expander External Hard Drive connected to the eSATA port on the back of the 8300HD. Since all recordings were stored on the external HD rather than the DVR they were all available when I swapped DVR's. However, I believe that not all areas have activated the eSATA port on the DVR and am also not sure that the new guide software even allows for an external hard drive.

I have since gotten rid of my 8300HD's and no longer use the external HD.

DB:2.92:Set Programs To Record On Genie From Other Hd-Dvr 3c

    Hello,

I recently had a Genie added to my whole home setup. When I set the install I was supposed to get my HD-DVR replaced with the Genie and a Genie mini. When the installer came out he recommended that I keep the HD DVR instead of the mini. So the HD-DVR was put in place of where the mini was going to go. Now with two DVR's I would expect when I chose a program to record it would prompt me on which DVR I wanted it to record to like at the following help link: Whole-Home DVR service: How do I record programs from a TV other than the one connected to my HD DVR? | DIRECTV Support

I could not see this option as expected based on the link and called Technical Support. I was told this was not possible and this did not show in their support system.

    My Equipment:

    Genie - Model: HR44-500

    HD-DVR - Model: HR20-700

So my question is, who is right the Tech support or the article? If I set something to record on the Genie that was already set up on the HD-DVR would it record twice or do they share a to do list?

I set up a lot of my recordings on-line at Direct's web site, it let's you choose which unit you want it to record on.

It appears there is no mechanism for moving recordings from an outgoing DVR to the incoming HD DVR. Is this correct? If so, why does Direct TV not provide such an essential service? Many thanks ...Brian Cain

DB:2.92:Dvr To Hd Dvr - Transfer Of Recordings x1

The basic reason that you cannot transfer recordings from one DVR to another has to do with security and encryption of the recorded data. It is part of the total system security that DirecTV incorporates into their products. I would not expect to see that change. As nctech noted though, these are user to user forums, the best we can do is offer suggestions to help you with problems, and possibly explain some of what is going on to help understand issues.Carl

I have a DVR that isn't HD enabled. If I purchase a video capture card, would I be able to transfer my programs to my computer and burn them onto DVDs? My receiver has two USB ports (one on front, one on back) and all it says in the manual for them is "for future use." Will I have to upgrade to an HD enabled receiver in order to burn my programs using my computer?

Verizon will not help transfer recordings from your DVR to another device. Reason being is if it can be moved then it can be copied and shared, which would cause problems with verizon and its content providers.

I replaced my DirecTV DVR+ receiver with a new HD-DVR receiver but left the old receiver still activated. I would like to view programs recorded on the old DVR. Must I disconnect the new HD-DVR and transfer all connections to the old in order to watch the previously recorded programs? Is there any way to tee the cables to two receivers at once? (Equipment is installed in an entertainment center and it is very inconvenient to change connections once made)

DB:2.90:Retrieve Programs From Old Dvr 9m

Take a look at this thread:http://forums.directv.com/message/10338478#10338478You may have to reconnect it to the dish, at least temporarily, or you may not be able to do it without having DirecTV reactivate the DVR functions of the receiver. In any case you can use a 'T' or splitter of any kind on the satellite cables. You would either swap cables around or run a separate cable to the dish or multiswitch.

Last night, I noticed my series program was not recording. So I checked the DVR history, and it said the series was not recorded because of a "fatal hardware error."

I had the channel in my live buffer, so I was able to transfer it into a saved recording, which worked fine. All of my other programs that night recorded ok and the saved programs on the DVR play fine, as far as I know (didn't check every one).

What does this error mean? How concerned should I be?

    DB:2.90:Fatal Hardware Error? ks

I will keep an eye on things, and if it continues to happen will replace the box.

DB:2.90:Moving A Whole Home Dvr cx

You cannot use the HD DVR's ethernet port for internet connectivity when you have Whole Home DVR Service. The only way to get internet connectivity with a DECA-based WHDVR setup is using DirecTV's Cinema Connection Kit. This provides the installer with a Broadband DECA Adapter and power supply that will bridge the WHDVR network (DECA coax) with your home network/internet (ethernet).

I have recorded programs saved on the DVR that I'd like to transfer to a DVD. I have a DVD recorder and have tried playing the recording while selecting record on the DVD with no luck. Is it possible to transfer my programs? thanks

DB:2.89:Recording From Dvr To Dvd dd

If you get audio but no video you're on the right track. Check to see if the recorder auto-senses S-video vs Composite or if the s-video input is specified differently. There may be a setup menu to pick the video type or they may have different names (e.g. LIne 1 and Line 2), even though they share the same set of audio inputs. Try using a composite cable instead of S-video. On some equipment, just plugging in a composite cable will disable the matching s-video input so be sure there are no extra cables connected. The basic setup for recording from any current DirecTV receiver is as follows, typically using Composite or S-video + Red and White audio cables.Receiver Out - 1st TV InReceiver Out - Recorder InRecorder Out - 2nd TV In To record, set the TV to whatever input the recorder is connected to and then using the recoreder's menus set the recorder to use whatever input the DirecTV receiver is connected to. Play the recording or select the channel you want to record, and start the recorder. Not having the correct input selected on the recorder is probably the #1 cause of recording problems.

Hello, I seem to be getting mixed answers. Could anyone tell me if Fios has the option for a multiroom HD DVR. Meaning, have one HD DVR in one room, and be able to watch the HD recordings from another room/set top box?

    Thanks

With a Standard STB you will be able to watch the Non HD Content that you recorded on your MR DVR. If you want to watch the HD content from the MR DVR then you will require a HD Box.

if you have a VCR or DVD recorder you can spool the shows to tape/DVD for later viewing but if I recall you have to remove the hdmi cable first reboot and look at your coax to tv connection to view menu. New DVRs have the other outputs active even while HDMI is active.

You may play your programs out to a DVD writer and record on DVD... but only if DRM is not set for that program, which will not allow external recording if the DVD recorderhonors the DRM flag

You don't change the box. All FiOS DVRs are CAPABLE of the Multi-room feature. It is merely NOT ACTIVATED unless you have ordered the service. Tech Support merely activates the Multi-Room feature on your existing box. So you should not lose any recordings.

I just did the reverse, and the CS reps kept insisting that they need to send me a NON-Multi-Room box and I would need to return my Multi-Room box, but after some persistence, I finally got transferred to a guy who knew what he was talking about and simply de-activated the MR features.
