DB:3.50:Mac Ignores All Startup Key Combinations! 1j

I don't know exactly when I started having this problem, but I remember when I used Tiger I could do it fine. I can't startup in single-user mode (hold down CMD S) or the startup disk select one (hold down OPTION). My iMac completely ignores those commands and it goes straight to the desktop. I want to startup in single-user mode so I can run Applejack but my Mac is completely ignoring the CMD-S command while booting.

This works perfectly fine on my Mac Mini also running the latest version of leopard, but something is wrong with my intel iMac and I don't know what.

DB:3.50:Mac Ignores All Startup Key Combinations! 1j

According to this thread and other posts I've seen the metal keyboard isn't recognized by early Intel Macs until after boot-up. I'm afraid it looks as if you will only be able to do this by using another keyboard.

    Hello all,

When using Remote Desktop Connection, I am unable to type a backslash character on my Apple keyboard. My keyboard is a UK layout, and the backslash key is just to the left of the return key. On my PC keyboard (also UK layout), the backslash key is just to the right of the left shift key. Neither results in a backslash in any Windows program or dialog. I've tried using combinations of modifier keys too but no luck. Of course, it would be the backslash key, being vital when using windows

I realise that this may be an RDC issue but thought that it might have something to do with my Mac configuration (only been using Macs six months or so, so I'm not too sure).

Anyone out there know of a fix for this (other than typing ALT + 0092 each time)?

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Jon

DB:2.65:Unable To Type A Backslash '\' Using Remote Desktop Connection (Rdc) ck

It may be the actual machine your a RDC-ing into that has the trouble, not the Mac.

I suggest you RDC into the PC, run notepad then press everykey on the keyboard in order, then with each modifier, then with each combination of modifiers to see where each key maps to on your mac keyboard.

    Hi
I have an iPhone 3G that I've upgraded to 3.0 and a Mac Pro running iTunes that I upgraded to 8.2 and now iTunes totally ignores the iPhone.
I have tried the rebooting of both computer and iPhone and various combinations of connecting the phone while having the wi-fi disabled and more tips I found online but nothing has worked. iTunes tells me it's running the latest version of itself so I am stuck.

I know that there's nothing wrong with the cable as iPhoto still finds the iPhone and is able to download the pics from it.

I am hesitant to uninstall iTunes as I'm scared I'll lose all playlists and other stuff (which might be a misunderstanding on my part) I hear it's not a sure fix anyway so I'm hoping I'm not getting thrown into some Windows type gymnastics to get this to work.

My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?

DB:2.58:Installing Windows 7 With Boot Camp As Whole Partition On 2nd Internal Hard Drive zd

Hi all, I am unsure what is the recent changes with Apple boot camp. But when I used boot camp utilitiy on my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) to install windows 7 64 bits. It would not install and created a whole lot of problems. After I initialise the process to install windows 7 using boot camp utilities, I chose the option to create a single partition to installl windows 7 on my secondary internal hard drive (1TB). After I restarted my Mac Pro and started the Windows 7 installation process, I was unable to install Windows 7 on the BOOTCAMP partition created by the boot camp utilitiy. I got an error something about Windows cannot be installed on the selected forum because the driver contained GPT details. I tried to format the BOOTCAMP partition, but it ended up with errors. I tried to delete and recreate the BOOTCAMP partition in Windows setup, but failed with errors again. As I could not go any further with the Windows 7 installation, I had to hard reset my Mac Pro and tried to reboot back into Mac OS X Lion and that's when the nightmare begin. Not only I could not boot into OS X, I could not use any of the startup key combinations (i.e. Hold option key to select start up disk, option + R to boot the lion recovery drive, not boot from any external firewire drive installed with OS X Lion). Basically none of the key combinations worked except for the holdingi F12 and mouse key to eject CD. The only thing I could boot the Mac Pro with is the windows installation CD and Linux Ubuntu Raring Distro. I can install the ubuntu distro without any issue. However, I could not boot my mac pro back into OS X as Linux does not support bootcamp. The only way I could use Mac OS X Lion again is to delete the partition OS X Lion was installed on, and then I was be able to install Windows 7 without any issue. After installing windows 7 I would have to download boot camp and then use the boot camp control panel to restart in the Mac Pro installation DVD and I will have to reinstall OS X again. After installing OS X, I went to System Preference and tried to select Windows 7 as startup disc. But I failed to as it says "Windows 7" Was installed via another utility. I would have to erase the partition and reinstall Windows 7 again using bootcamp utility. If I try to install windows 7 again, the horror I described above repeats again. From my understanding, the Boot camp utility creates a new EFI bootrom with Master Boot Record (MBR) in FAT32 format. Therefore I could not boot back into Mac OS X without using boot camp in windows 7 as none of the boot combinations key worked. I want to ask if anyone is experiencing the same issue as i do, and if there are any solutions to the problem I am experiencing. I never had such issue before. I was able to install Windows 7 on my 2ndary internal hard drive without issue using boot camp. I don't what has changed. I have googled for solution, I only found something related to XOM but nothing else. If anyone can provide me with any help in regards to installing Windows 7 as a whole partition on a secondary internal hard drive. It'd be grealy appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you boot drive is full and won't boot then your only avenue is to connect your Mac to another Mac via Target Disk Mode, Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. There you can use the other Mac to access your hard drive to move files off of it to an external HD or delete files. It's strongly recommended one maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance.

    Hi,

This problem seems to be limited to late 2007 Mac Books. I bought two of them. Annoying and frustrating that Apple has failed to put any information on the support pages about this.
An option is to select windows as the normal boot option. You can then use the option key during startup if you want to boot as a Mac. The danger here is that you may start in windows more often than you want...

    Else there is way out

If not wrong, then you want certain materials to print on invoice for customers and not all. If this is your requirment, then the materials which you want to print must be having something unique from other materials. so what you can do is, in your smartform, you can put a condition to print such special amterials or not to print certain materials

There doesn't appear to be any more USB disk activity so I think it's toast at this point.

Apologies if this has been answered. I've done multiple searches and haven't found what I need.

As is quite common, I work on a Windows laptop at work and have a MacBook Pro at home. Of course we all know about Windows using the Control key as the modifier for copy/cut/paste whereas the Mac uses Command. This is the only key combination that I frequently use that gives me trouble.

What I want to do is to be able to use EITHER Control+C/X/V OR Command+C/X/V to cut, copy, and paste. I want to be able to use the Windows combination when I'm not thinking Mac, and the Mac combination when I am. So remapping the Command key to the Control key won't do it. Neither will something that changes just the Copy/Cut/Paste commands.

Is there something that will intercept specific key combinations and generate alternative combinations? Or something that will allow multiple shortcuts for a single command?

A related question is whether Control-C/X/V is used for anything in Mac OS or other common Apps. Just so I know if I'm losing anything important.

    Thanks

    DB:2.49:Multiple Copy Commands 3k

You're absolutely right. And if I didn't have such muscle memory (or whatever it is) with the Windows commands and wasn't afraid of losing text, then I'd either leave it alone, or write a macro that popped up a dialog that says "Use Command-C Dummy!". Hopefully when I retire, and stop using Windows, I'll be able to train myself the right way.

Hi everyone! This is the first time Ive posted a question here, so please be patient. I have a 2007 macbook white with 10.5 mac os leopard. Lately a was having trouble with low free space left so I decided to clean some unused files. Accidentally I erased some (I dont know which ones) that I shouldnt have from the libraries folder. Since I couldnt start my mac, I decided to do a "archive and install" with the install disks. Everything went fine and my mac came back to life, BUT now a had even fewer space left due to these new second mac osx installation. Since I needed to retrieve some space I selected the files from the just made "previous system folder" and the deleted it. I finally got some free space left and thought it had gone ok UNTIL I restarted the mac and got a flashing question mark. Now I cant solve it with any of the key startup combinations, and when I insert the install disks the disk utility doesnt find my HD. What has happened??!! Ive got a big hunch that Im screwed, what do you think?? Thank you all

Thanks Klaus1. When I located the files I wanted from previous folder I followed the instructions that actually you have linked. Then I deleted the folder and it was when it all happened.

PC Suite ignores additional items when there are more than one item of the same kind - example: if I have two or more notes in a contact, only one is showed, and the remaining ones are ignored. It seems to be a bug, since even exportation of a contact with multiple items of the same kind only exports one of them, ignoring all the others. My cell phone is 5610, is connected with the USB cable, and my PC Suite is version 7.1.30.9

DB:2.48:Pc Suite Ignores More Than One Item Of Each Kind dd

Thanks cricfancy. I thought I was doing something stupid - but now I know PC Suite is the stupid one! Lets press Nokia to make a better Suite - it's unbelievable thatthe small cell phone firmware can deal with multiple items while the almighty PC Suite cannot. Please, Nokia, change the items editor fields to drop-down lists instead of individual text fields, or do whatever you need to do in order to allow multiple items!

Anyway, I found a workaround for my problem - my cell´s LCD died, and I had to transfer all contact items to a new phone. I backed up only the contacts of my old LCD-less phone, and restored them to my new cell phone. Although the new one is a cheaper model, it accepted all items, even the multiple ones - got it, PC Suite? Shame on you, PC Suite!

Some startup key combinations that you can use when your Mac starts, such as those which use the Option or Command keys, may not respond if a firmware password has also been enabled. If you have a firmware password enabled on your Mac, you must successfully enter that password before you can boot to another startup volume, or before you can access the Startup Manager. Is it not so that if I boot from lets say a DVD or External HD, I will be asked for the Firmware PW before being allowed to go on?

DB:2.46:Startup Freeze After Pc Mouse Install 9d

    Hello everybody.
I am a pc person trying to enter the mac world.
I recently bought a mac mini to hook up to a kvm switch and my pc. I borrowed a mac keyboard and mouse for original startup and all was well. After installing pc mouse software it called for a reboot. Since then, I get grey screen at startup and can not get the disk out. Holding option key at startup gives me a hard drive icon, but when I click on that, it freezes.
Somebody must have had this happen and has a solution for people like me.
    Thanks in advance.

mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.7)

DB:2.46:Startup Freeze After Pc Mouse Install 9d

First problem, get the CD out.

Restart the computer (hold down power key until it shuts down, the push to start), then hold down the Command (apple), Option, O and F keys as soon as it starts and hold them down until the Open Firmware window appears.

Then type "eject cd" in lower case (no quotes).

Your basic problem is that your mouse driver is probably not compatible with the OS system version. The manufacturer might have an update, but that doesn't solve your problem starting up. You will need a Mac mouse at this point.

Try holding down the shift key until the blue screen appears. This disables some drivers and might get the machine booted. If it does and the mouse install CD has an "uninstaller" RUN IT!

Otherwise it will require some grubbing around in the Library which you may not be eager to do.

Log on to the mouse manufacturer's site and see if an updated driver to match your OS is available. You need to know your OS version and whether your machine is intel or Power PC.

Check this by going to the blue apple, pulling down to "about this Mac" and the Mac OS X screen will tell you what OS version you are running, and should tell you what processor is installed. If the latter data is not clear, click on the "more Info. . ." button and the hardware overview will supply the CPU data.

Sorry your having trouble, changing operating systems is always uncomfortable, and having driver trouble right off the bat is a real pain.

Probably there is some way to associate different maps to my component like JTable does, depending on platform? What about mouse and key combinations?

As an example, I have found this http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/javax/swing/doc-files/Key-Index.html#JTable but aside from not knowing how to implement this type of thing, the listing is for key events only. Not mouse-key combinations.

Today at work, my Mac (with WinXP/BootCamp) was set up to log into the company's domain because it was impossible to connect via OS X no matter what we tried. Anyway, I'm now prompted for a Control-Alt-Delete every time I boot into Windows. I first did it with a Windows USB keyboard, but at home I don't have access to one of those. I've read so many forum post of people giving all sorts of key combinations that are supposedly the Mac's way of typing Control-Alt-Delete, but none work. What's the deal?

DB:2.43:Control-Alt-Delete (For Logging In To A Windows Domain). 37

For anyone that's interested, it will be necessary to remap one of the existing keys to act as a DELETE key. I downloaded some software from microsoft that included an app called RemapKey.exe that is supposed to effortlessly help you remap your MBP keyboard via a GUI.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee -b18c4790cffddisplaylang=en

The GUI looks nice, but it does not even closely resemble the MBP keyboard so there's absolutely no way of telling which MBP keys you're mapping the Window's keys to! I tried three different times before realizing that control-alt-delete is not worth the hassle so I disabled it with the help of these instruction.

    http://www.visualwin.com/Disable-C-A-D/

Now Windows boots up and prompts with the login screen. No more control-alt-delete. I wish I could say no more windows!

I upgraded my MacBook Air 13in (purchased new in mid 2011) from OS X 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 today. As it was restarting, it hung at a gray screen that had only a Mac icon on it. I let it stay there for about 15 minutes before I forced it to tun off by holding the power button down for several seconds. Starting up again, it plays the startup sound and immediately displays a completely blank solid gray screen, no icons. I've shut it down and started it up again trying many different key combinations. The only one that seems to do anything is cmd-opt-p-r (pram). Others that I've tried at startup are shift, shift-cmd-v, cmd-v, cmd-r, opt. With an osx lion install USB in a USB port, I've tried booting with opt and with c, to try to boot from the USB stick. All of these attempts are met with the same result. A solid gray blank screen. Is there anything else I can try on my own? I have a recent time machine backup and a 15in 2010 MacBook Pro.

    hello all,

i have created a clone of my power mac g4's "Macintosh HD" drive (with os 9.2.2 only) onto a single -volume/unpartitioned external firewire drive. i have been able to successfully boot into os 9.2.2 from the clone by setting the external fw hdd as the startup disk in the "Startup Disk" control panel and restarting.

my question is, how come "Startup Manager" does not work for me even though i do exactly what is instructed in this apple support article

the first time i set the startup disk to the ext fw hdd , i just restarted like normal (without holding down the option jey). the cloned os booted perfectly fine from the ext fw hdd as i configured it to.

then i tried to see if i could select a startup disk using startup manager (restarted; holding option key). all i got when i held down the option key was a flashing floppy disk icon with a question mark on it. after a few seconds of the flashing floppy disk, the machine booted up into os 9.2.2 from the original "Macintosh HD" drive (even though i had configured the ext fw hdd as the startup disk).

then i tried it again by shutting down the machine then turning it on again while holding the option key. this time, as i held the option key, the smiling mac appeared (ignoring the fact that i was holding down the option key) and booted up like normal using the clone on the ext fw hdd that i configured in the control panel.

what am i doing wrong? according to the article, my power mac g4 (agp graphics) with os 9.2.2 is expected to have a working startup manager. thanks in advance for your help.

    many thanks

DB:2.42:Cannot Startup From Alternate Os X Disks fk

I can only startup from the disk I have designated as the "Startup" disk in the "System Preferences." By that I mean, holding down the "Option" key during startup does not bring up the several disks with valid OSs on them that would normally show up, it just continues to startup from the designated disk. Likewise, if I hold down the "Shift" key during startup, it does not startup in "Safe" mode, it just starts up from the designated startup disk. Holding down the "c" key during startup will not startup the MacPro from my original "Mac OS X Install DVD." It will bypass that instruction and just startup from the designated "Startup" disk. This startup problem started about two weeks ago, but I cannot associate the change with anything I did.

I can only get it to startup from a different disk by designating a different disk in the "System Preferences Startup Disk", where all the l disks that don't show up with the "Option" key, do show up.

I have ONYX and Cocktail and may have inadvertently turned something on or off, but I don't think so.

Is there a preference file I can trash in the Library's Preferences folder that might cure the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Having done all the usual erasures, new installs, reformatting, pulled RAM and hard drive out and in, zapped PRAM, NVRAM, pressed various key combinations ...It all boils down to this:

Press power button, whirr, chime, click click (drive, RAM?), no more clicks, hangs, black screen, no peripherals light up.

Then, minutes or hours later after many attempts to start, it catches, click click, click, click click and on it goes. But then it will usually crash at some point after that.

Thanks for posting back with an update.

You have serious directory issues. Error Code -9972 is pretty radical as you can see in this article and in this one.
    1. Be sure you have an up-to-date reliable backup. The best backup would be to clone the entire HDD to an external Firewire HDD using SuperDuper. If you need more help with backup, please ask.
    2. Follow directions in the articles. I recommend using Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro, although, depending on the severity of the issue, there is no guarantee of their success.
    3. You may need to do a reformat, zero all data, re-install and restore. Post back for directions for those procedures.
    4. Sometimes all of the above procedures are not able to remedy the situation and the only resolution is to instatall a new HDD. However, we are not there yet.

Please let me know how it goes, and any other questions you have.

    Good luck.

Unboxed, started up ... I only see the apple logo in a few seconds then it dies.
Have tried all possible solutions contained in the documents supplied with the Mac.

But then I noticed a thing, if I hold down a key while it starts up (any key) the problem is gone. So now i allways have a key pressed down while working pretty strange!

Conclusion: I must have a key pressed at all time! During startup and normal operation.. Otherwhise it wont start up at all and if i stop pressing that key while im in Mac OS X you get the "Sleep, Restart, Shutdown" menu. That pop-up lasts about 2 seconds then it's dead again..

I'm thinking it's because I don't have open GL. My Matrox P650 PCIe 128 video card has only 128MB whereas I have been told that Open GL requires 512MB.

I just made the leap from PC's to the Mac world.
On my PC I can add French to my language settings and easily switch my keyboard to type in French with all the accents. Your keyboard essentially changes to a French keyboard just by selecting FR on your task bar. No awkward key combinations; you just type as normal - but now on the French keyboard. To switch back you select EN. Tres simple.
In researching how to do the same on my MacBook Pro - I only find articles talking about holding down the option key while hitting another key, and then after that you hit the actual key you want accented.
There must be a easier way. I can't believe something so simple on a PC would actually be harder on a Mac.
    Say it ain't so. PLEASE.

    Hello Vishnu

As you rightly mentioned in SAP we cannot generate item outputs for billing documents. OSS note 432049 confirms that and also suggests you avoid using an item field for output determination on header level.

May be you create an invoice per each item, that may increase the number of billing documents.

Also take a look at OSS note 7563 which talks about item fields in a different context.

So a bad Windows disc during a boot camp install screwed up my poor mac mini...

I'm a pretty Mac savvy guy. I've owned both Windows and Mac machines all my life... and I just ran into a problem that has really floored me....

Last night I went to install Windows XP Professional using Boot Camp on my Mac Mini. It seemed like a pretty basic process so I guess I wasn't paying too much attention. I formatted my partition, popped in my XP disc, and got all the way to where the installer restarts the computer.

    Then Disaster.

I get the famed error "Disk Error Press any key to restart" after the line asking me to press any key to boot from a disc.

    Then nothing.

I read that this happens when your XP disc doesn't give you the option to reformat the partition or something. That's fine. But I had another really serious problem.

Nothing worked. No keys on the keyboard, no startup discs, no nothing. No key combinations will bring up a choice of boot disc, verbose mode, target disk mode, or anything. I have tried booting with an XP and Leopard disc in the actual DVD drive on the Mac Mini and a USB DVD drive. Discs that go in the machine's drive will not come out and the computer has to be cracked open to extract the disc.

With the Leopard disc in the external it spins and thinks for about 15 minutes and then eventually goes to the same "disk error" message.

I can't get it to go back to OSX. I took the drive out and put it in an enclosure and deleted the XP partition. But after painstakingly putting the machine back together, I set it up, turn it back on, and hoped to see that wonderful apple logo!

Nothing. I get the "boot volume can not be found, insert boot CD" or something... So I do so... Nothing. I take it apart, take out the disc, put it in the USB external... it spins for about 10 minutes... then it goes to a blinking cursor ala PC DOS... nothing. I tried resetting the PRAM as per the instructions on the apple site and NOW the fan is blasting, I still got that Boot Volume error, and the light on the front of the computer no longer turns on.

I'm at a loss here, people... I AM the computer guy to other people. I have nobody to turn to.

    Please help...

DB:2.40:Windows Killed My Poor Mac Mini sd

The Apple aluminium keyboards have a notorious inability to control Mac mini startup behavior, so it is not a surprise that you weren't able to resolve the problem without using another USB keyboard.

Never had problems with it or what so ever, everything worked flawles.Last week the trouble(s) began..First thing I've noticed was that at start-up, my keyboard was no longer working when I was typing my password during login. The trackpad was working, so I restarted my Mac. Once again, Mac booted normally, once at the login screen, my keyboard was still not working, also i saw this time a cross through the battery logo on the upper right corner.Confused, i restarted my Mac again.. This time I even heard the fan making a very loud noise. At the login screen, still no working keyboard, again a cross trough the battery logo. So I shut it down again, because I am (still) clueless why these problems occur from out of nothing. The next day my Mac would not startup at all! Now a week later it still wont startup. Even when i connect my MagSafe charger, which normally would light up orange when charging or green when fully charged whiles connected was not showing a color or what so ever! So, I have googled many things the last week (still clueless), came accross some interesting topics, but none of them worked nor can work for me because my MacBook Pro would simply (still) not start up!I've tried:- Resetting the System Management Controller- Resetting the PRAM + VRAM- Hold Key Combinations like (Shift + Control + Option + Power Button ) whiles booting- P + R Key cominations whiles bootingNothing! It's like my MacBook Pro died.Could some one please share their similar experience with me and tell me how to solve this problem?Looking forward for your replies. Thanks in advance!Greetings from Holland..Best Regards,Atilla Ertunc

    DB:2.38:Stuck In Os 9.2 1p

    Hi All,
I've got a G4 that has OS 9.2 and leopard on it. It normally starts up in leopard, but I just switched the startup disc to OS 9.2 today and now I can't switch it out.

When I try to run startup disk it tells me that it can't because OTUtilityLib coule not start up.

When I insert the OS X install disc it reads it allows me to open it but when I tell it to restart from osxinstall.app it does nothing

When I restart it manually while holding "C" it ignores the startup key and just boots in OS 9

Is there a way I can fix this or at the very least wipe the computer so that I can do a clean install of OS X?

DB:2.38:Ctrl Alt Del To Restart Not Working In Bootcamp dx

Recently when starting my apple in boot camp i got the message "BOOTMGR is compressed, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". The key combination does nothing..........i am using the option key as Alt on my mac keyboard but have tried other combinations......what to do?

DB:2.38:Ctrl Alt Del To Restart Not Working In Bootcamp dx

If you see a message like "BOOTMGR is missing," that either means:Something has tampered with (deleted or altered) the Windows boot loader, ORYou did not follow the Boot Camp Setup guide properly, which required you to format the prepared Boot Camp volume while setting up Windows, ORThe Boot Camp volume and/or your hard disk is damaged in some way. Most likely, you don't know why or how it got to be damaged, but the problem now prevents Windows from starting at all.Scenario 1 seems the most likely. Running on that basis, you should be able to do a Startup Repair from your Windows disc.Start Windows Setup as if you were going to install Windows again, but this time, click the option "Repair your computer". One of the options here should be "Startup Repair". Follow the ensuing wizard Windows will check for inconsistencies that prevent it from booting correctly, though it does take a fair bit of time doing so. If that fixed anything, exit Setup and try again to boot Windows. If your attempt failed, then boot the Windows DVD again, choose "Repair your computer", and then go to a command prompt.Once here, you can run the following commands in order, pressing [Return] after each. I'll tell you what they do in square brackets ([])c: [Change the current focus to the C drive]cd\ [Change to the root directory level. If we're there, this command won't do much, but it doesn't hurt anything anyway]attrib -c bootmgr [Remove the compression flag from the indicated file BOOTMGR, decompressing it]exit [Close the prompt window and go back to the options dialog]If that fails, you can load a fresh copy of Windows instead, which you'll do anyway if Seenario 2 or 3 is in play.Nate

DB:2.38:Kernal Panics Out Of Nowhere, At Startup In A G4 Powerbook zc

I may have trashed the System folder, but now I can't re-install anything. I can restart from CD using Techtool Pro or Diskwarrior, but not from any of my system install disks. I've tried all the startup key combinations I can find: Cmd-Opt-P-R; Cmd-Opt-O-F; Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete; resetting the power manager, etc., and nothing has helped. I got somewhere with a couple of those, but I couldn't get beyond a flashing Mac OS9 icon/question mark. Then, finally, the apple logo appears followed, every time, by the Kernal panic, with the words at the top:
Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powerbook6,2"

And as far as I can tell, no power on earth can get me beyond that screen. When that started happening,I removed the add-on RAM and the Airport card, and there are no peripherals connected to the computer. It was bought used four years ago from a Mac specialty house, has worked fine ever since, and was working fine until we shifted its contents to a new Powerbook, using a Firewire cable, and possibly trashing the OS in the process. That may have done it, but why is it impossible to fix it? I'd like to provide more details, e.g., which version of the system was running and how much RAM, but I don't know, and the computer isn't about to tell me. Is there a fix for this?

DB:2.38:Kernal Panics Out Of Nowhere, At Startup In A G4 Powerbook zc

Do this to reset the PMU:

    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

On the disk, you can contact Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and see if they have any of the original OS X disk sets for your system, or you can find a retail version of Tiger 10.4.

DB:2.38:G5 Hangs At Grey Startup Screen 18

Acquaintence brought me her machine and said help! Machine is frozen and won't start up. She said before the last power off that it was acting "funny" (highly technical term). She thought it had a virus!

Looked at dozens of postings on this topic but didn't find one that fit my problem. Upon powering on the machine it goes to the light grey screen with the apple logo and just sits. No key combinations on startup work (open firmware, reset pram, "c" startup from CD). Almost like it isn't recognizing the keyboard. I know the keyboard is good (pulled it from a working unit).

There was a CD (Original system disk 10.3.5) in the machine and ended up having to use the old paperclip trick to get it out. I even tried putting in the Tiger DVD this way, but the G5 just ignores it (spins up, but doesn't launch).

    I have reset the PMU.

    Any ideas?

DB:2.38:G5 Hangs At Grey Startup Screen 18

Ok, got some life back. Replaced the drive with a new SATA drive and I can now get it started up. Ran the hardware test and it is reporting bad ram in J14... On to the next step....

    Thanx all for the help.

Its very diffcult to help you if you don't advise what version of O S X is installed? Macs don't run IOS, they run OS X. IOS is for devices like an iPad, iPhone and iPod. OS X and IOS are two toally seperate operating systems.

Hi, Ctrl F5 does not resolve the problem. I put the code in my domain jturull.cat/test, that is in a diferent server, and I've been amazed to see the lines divided correctly! I conclude that the problem is in my localhost server and not in IE.

Hi i have a Power Macintosh 9600, which i recently got a new hard drive for as the old one was bust. ive got it now and cant find my OS disks, i cant even remember which OS i had, but im trying to install mac osx from CD on it, and none of the key combinations seem to be working for botting from CD.

also i hear 16 beeps on startup after the chime?
i found troubleshooting for 4 and 8 beeps, but not for 16, the computer was bought "avid ready" for video editing, and i saw one of the problems for 8 beeps involved removing additional memory added after the factory, so perhaps the avid ready upgrades are the cause?

all i can see is the grey screenw ith the floppy, somtimes it has a question mark in it, i think that depends on if i hold down keys.

    any ideas?

DB:2.38:Installing New Hd With Mac Osx On Powermac 9600 sx

Cool explanation of termination power. Like the public transport analogy! I never before understood exactly how termination power worked, and especially why sometimes it had to be enabled or disabled.

DB:2.38:Startup Key Combinations With Bluetooth Keyboard? pp

In Lion, accessing the recovery partition entails holding down the command-R key combination at startup. Selecting a startup disk and starting up in Safe Boot mode also require holding key combinations at startup. But under Lion and a bluetooth keyboard, none of these key combinations work. A wired keyboard works fine, but I no longer have one. A friend who downloaded and installed Lion today just called and asked how he can do this with HIS bluetooth keyboard, so this seems to be a general concern. Any tips? Thanks!

DB:2.38:Assigning Keys With Alt (Mac Os X) kd

    Hi,

I have created some key assignments in board and schematic editor. All

work fine except for Alt combinations which result in a combining

character (such as for U, ~ for N, and ̑ for K). Instead of

performing the assigned function it just puts a character in the command

line. Any idea how to get around this?

    Thanks

    Zoran

DB:2.38:Assigning Keys With Alt (Mac Os X) kd

In 6.3 it got even worse... Now also AltW, AltM, AltZ, and AltP

don't work - but they worked just fine in 6.2. Maybe some other

combinations also do not work, but I haven't tested them all.

This makes ASSIGN command and shortcut keys totally useless.

On top of that there is no obvious rule which keys work and which do not

(or will not in the next release). Alt+R for example still works; in

what respect is R different from other characters? Am I getting

    something wrong here?

    DB:2.38:Network Loss On Startup - 10.4.5 93

    Hi,

I have somehow messed up the Airport network settings. On startup the network isn't present. Every time, to get it back I have to select 'Open Internet Connect' and then type in the network and pass key (WPA). The network runs fine until the next power cycle and 'diagnostics' reports that the network appears fine. I have tried a number of things such as moving the network to the top of the preferred list and by selecting 'automatic' under System Preferrances-Network but with no difference. BTW, I have tried combinations on the WAP (Netgear WG602V3) for SSID broadcast enable and disable. Confirmed also that the MAC id is locked in on the WAP.

Any clues on what to try next? I'm sure that things worked under previous versions of Tiger.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the responses.

I had a look around the posts today and spotted a similar thread by Mac_Daddy just a few threads down from this entitled "Airport Doesn't Auto Connect to Wireless Network with 10.4.5" I tried Kendrick's suggestion of deleting existing networks using the - key and then adding back my network with the + key and this seems to be working - well 2 recycles anyway!

Noted also today that 10.4.6 is now out so I guess we can expect more fun later!

    Thanks,
