Hi Vincent,I have rebooted the host OS (and applied updates) and the virtuals are now starting up with no problems. Before rebooting I shut down the 3rd VM without applying updates and it also was unable to start, so I don't believe updates to the VM were the issue - clearly Host OS related in this instance.

    DB:3.95:Fusion 4 Virtual Machine Library Window a3

The new Virtual Machine Library in Fusion 4 is annoying in several ways:

    1) When you select a virtual machine and go to Settings, the virtual machine takes over the library window. When you close the virtual machine window, the library is now gone.

    2) When you start a virtual machine, the virtual machine takes over the library window and resizes it. When you suspend or shut down the virtual machine, the library window is left at the same size as the virtual machine.

It seems that VMware has forgotten that some people use more than one virtual machine in Fusion. The constant taking over and resizing of the Virtual Machine Library window makes it difficult to use multiple VMs in Fusion.

I want Fusion to leave the Virtual Machine Library window at the same size that I set it to. When accessing settings or starting a virtual machine, I want Fusion to display the virtual machine in a new window rather than taking over and resizing the Virtual Machine Library window. I want the Virtual Machine Library window to remain open unless I close it myself. When suspending or shutting down a virtual machine, I want that to be done in its own window rather than resizing the Virtual Machine Library window.

    DB:3.95:Fusion 4 Virtual Machine Library Window a3

VMware Fusion 4's GUI is absolutely horrible! and many complaints about its new design were immediately voiced in the beta testing and VMware's response was, and I paraphrase, get use to it as it will never be the way it was in the past.

While I do have a copy of it installed on a secondary system, nonetheless I do not have nor will ever install it on my primary system and continue to use VMware Fusion 3.x under OS X 10.6.x If VMware does not release a fully compatible and officially supported 3.x version for Mac OS X Lion then when I do upgrade my primary system to Mac OS X Lion the only virtualization product that will be installed is Parallels!

I know for shore that SQL Server 2005 has great perfomance on Virtual Server 2005 R2.

    I teach my students in virtual enviromente;
mirroring of real systems in VM enviromente
replication of real publisher on virtual subscribers
Also now I test SQL Server 2008 on Virtual PC 2007 (Windows 2003 Standard) enviromente. Works just great. I belive that SQL Server is on of the products where there is no difrence between real or VM.

    hi

    I want to do that:

When i start the host machine , vmware server start and connect to "localhost" then my virtual machine start in full screen .

How avoid to click "connect to virtual host", click "start virtual" machine" and click " full screen".

DB:3.86:Start The Host And Launch The Virtual Machine In Full Screen 73

The problem is there are 2 issues here, not just 1.

First, you can set the VM to automatically start up on system boot - Edit VM SettingsOptions TabStartup and Shutdown list item, change from interactive user to either system or a specific user, set to power on on startup, shut down guest on shutdown.

For the second, you could connect to the running VM via VNC - you need to manually add some parameters to the vmx file for the guest. That way, you won't need to run the Server Console just to view a guest in full screen.

Realize that VMware Server is designed for back-end service type of VMs (non-interactive). Workstation or Player are more designed for user-interactive VMs, and may be a better fit for your scenario...

    Have anyone encountered this problem?

What kind of OS are you cloning? windows 2003? Just put the deploy.cab files of the windows 2003 install CD in "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\resources\windows\sysprep\svr2003" For linux vm's, do an installation of the "Open source components", to be downloaded from the vc section.

@PratapReddy, your blog post will be definitely useful and addresses many of the issues posted recently by those devs who are getting into WP DEV. These are the steps that I did a year and half ago and having them summed up at one place will be of great
use to many. You should be providing this link in every post that is relevant.
Secondly, for those who got complaints about VM within a VM, yes officially MS doesn't guarantee. But I too have a WP8 SDK installation within Win8.1 running over Parallels 9 on a MacBook Pro. I too had issues in installing and running WP8 emulators in Parallels.
But with Win8.1 Upadate 1 and Parallels 9, by enabling 'nested VM' I have installed WP8 8.1 SDKs successfully.

I copied the over the "Windows 2008" virtual machine folder to the new vitual machine folder on the windows 8 box running in parallels on Mac. This is what i get.

    I click "Take Ownership"

    Next Prompt:

"Failed to open virtual machine: Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed. A serious error occured: Permission Denied."

Is there some pre-configuration I need to do to get this working right?

Well from your subject line plus the first two sentences of your OP it certainly reads like you're trying to run a VM your created under VMware Player in Parallels on a Mac not necessarily as a netted VM running in VMware Player running under Parallels. Anyway if you got it working that's what's important!

    DB:3.73:Bad Disk - Virtual Machine Won't Start a7

    Hi all,

I hope this is an easy one.

I have ESXi 5.x machine with a virtual machine running Linux. There are 4 physical hard drives. One of my virtual machines has Software RAID 5 configured with one virtual disk on a different physical drive.

One of the hard disks has failed. The virtual machine now will not start as it cannot find the disk.

I am going to replace the disk, but wanted to get ideas on how to do this without losing my data. My current thinking is to replace the disk, create the missing virtual disk and fire up the machine, hoping that RAID will detect that the data is gone and rebuild the volume. I'm hoping this will work, but if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears

    Thanks.

    DB:3.73:Bad Disk - Virtual Machine Won't Start a7

    Hi

    Welcome to the communities.

If you have RADI 5 then there is very less chance to data loss until unless two hard disk got failed.

If the .vmdk file doesn't exist, the player won't create one for you. You'll need to point at an existing but empty disk image. You can download some pre-made images here:

    Hi all,

We have an ESXi 4.1 cluster and I just tried installing vCenter Converter Standalone 5 in order to try to p2v a small linux server. I've gone through the wizard a few times but it always fails to start the conversion process. After only 1% complete I get the following status in the converter:

Power On virtual machine testvm.uit.tufts.edu The operation is not allowed in the current state.

Power Off virtual machine testvm.uit.tufts.edu The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Powered off).

What’s the OS version of the Hyper-V host server and the guest VM?
Check event viewer to find related event logs and post them.
Give us more information about the guest VM.
Also you may copy the guest VM vhd to other location, create a new VM in the Hyper-V host and attach the copied vhd.

In your OP when you said "but when i click on it virtual machine dont response" I logically assumed you meant the Virtual Machine Display, sorry.

What happens if you go to the VMware Fusion +(menu bar) View menu, what is checked? Single Window or Unity? I bet it's Unity and if so you're not supposed to see the Guest OSes Desktop so select Single Windows or Full Screen.

    Hi,

On the event viewer there is this error:

"VMware process did not start properly"

If I change the "startup option" with "Local system Account", I resolve the problem. But the domain user cannot change this option , because he's not "local system administrator".

    Any suggestions?

Same issue with me, I cant give the users any more rights.

I was doing some diagnosis and I noticed that if an administrator is logged in at the server, then the VM Console works like a charm.

As long as the administrator is signed out or even if I have the server locked, then I get the error. This seems really strange!

    Hi Eaime,
For this specific occurrence, if the restart doesn't work the next try is to resize the VM.
However, as it dint help I recommend you to recreate the VM. As Resize/recreate will both move it to a different host and likely gets it to work.

Is there a way to start the virtual machine wizard without having the option on the menu bar?

DB:3.67:Problem With Virtual Pc On Win 7 Ultimate m9

    Hi there,
I would like to know if you can find other options except Create virtual machine in Virtual Machines folder. If so, do you have this issue ever since installing Windows Virtual PC?
Based on my search, this issue may cause by corrupted settings and you can use the following methods as a fix:
When in the Virtual Machines folder, press Alt to open the menu. Select Tools and then Folder options. On the dialog that is opened click Restore Defaults. Once you have done this, log out and log back in to see if the Create Virtual Machine option is now present.
If this doesnt work try create a registry file which will deletes any custom settings for your folder views and sets things back to their clean state. =================================1. Please open Notepad.2. Please copy and paste the following content into Notepad:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]3. Please save the file as fix.reg.4. Double click the file fix.reg to import the registry keys.
    5. Please restart the computer and check the issue again.
If neither of these options works you can manually start the new virtual machine wizard by going to your system drive and running: \Windows\System32\VPCWizard.exe

Yes you can use both storage! But only VM with their vhdx and xml files on the SAN will be highly available and will failover if the host fail The other VMs on local storage will not be available in the failover cluster... So if their host fail you cant

I too just started having this problem on a fresh loaded server with 16GB of ram, if I try to allocate anymore than 1GB to it, the client will not start. Clearly in attached screenshot there is sufficient resources. This problem just started
on this server today, after patches. So I went through all the patches installed last night by microsoft and only found one related to hyper-v, I uninstalled it and rebooted but the problem still exists.

The problem exists using static or dynamic memory allocation, the only way to get it to start is by setting the maximum memory to 1024mb

    Good afternoon:

I found a solution for the issue 'The requested resource is in use.' Since the vhdx files were not yet in production, I offlined them in the FCM CSV view and also in my storage management console. This seemed to have released any reservation.
I onlined each in the reverse manner and then was able to add the vhdx files to each vm. Each vm booted and had the drives available.

    Hello Community

    I installed Hyper-V.
At first it allowed me to create virtual machines.
A few days later Itried to create a virtual machine and I started getting these types of messages:
an error occurred while attempting to change the state of the virtual machine server failed to initialize
    and
the server encountered an error while starting server. please try to re-start this virtual machine after

the problem is fixed. server failed initialization
I uninstalled Hyper-V and reinstalled it but I still get the same problem.
I also used the icalcs command to add the sid to the vhd file.
What is the reason I can't create a virtual machine anymore?
    Thank you
    Shabeaut

    DB:3.63:Cant Create A Virtual Machine Anymore? m9

You should have to modify the accounts that the services run as.
In fact - I have never heard of a case to modify these.
You said you tried removing and then re-adding the Role. But, if you have messed with teh Service settings, I would recommend doing that again. But not allowing the Role wizard to create a Virtual network.
Did you then attempt to import your previous VMs back in, or did you create new VMs using the existing VHDs?
Your existing VMs would end up orphaned unless you Export them first. And you would have to create a new VM using the existing VHD.

    DB:3.61:Cannot Start Virtual Machine p7

    Hi,
I was recently restarting a virtual machine due to applying updates and the virtual machine froze. This vm is located on one of our clusters which are running the Hyper-V role. The vm worked just fine until the restart. I was unable to stop the vm at first
so I ended the process via Task Manager. Now I am unable to start the virtual machine.
The following error comes up when I try to start it:
The operation has failed. Failed to start virtual machine 'vmname'.

The details for this error are as follows:
Failed to bring the resource 'vmname online. Error Code: 0x8007139f. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.
Can you please tell me what I should do. I am thinking of deleting the virtual machine and re-creating it but would that erase the data from the virtual drive as well? Also, if this is a good idea, how would I go about giving the vm the smae IP address?
Our environment only uses DHCP and does not allow static IP assignments.
Is there a way to go about this without having to delete the virtual machine? And without having to restart the entire Hyper-V node on which the vm is located on?
    Thanks in advance,

    DB:3.61:Cannot Start Virtual Machine p7

I resolved the problem. Apparently, some of the virtual machines were not migrating due to the vhd's not being part of the CSV. I will be going through and moving the vm's with their vhd's to the CSV. Thanks for your help.
I have learned things that will most definitely come in handy in the future.

    Dear Theanykey,

I found that the relevant services which were mentioned in the troubleshooting link were not available in my machine because I had made them disable before based on Microsoft security checklists. However, installer program could not rollback completely after that Error and there was a link to this service in windows registery which their files were not available. I removed that line from the registery and problem solved.

You should run VMware's network configurator and make sure that vmnet1 and vmnet8 have assigned some static C-class network - usually from 192.168.x.x range, unless your company uses them - in that case use one C-class network from range 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x.

I updated to OSX 10.8.3 while the VM was running. IMHO, that's what broke the VM. The VMDK was corrupted and beyond repair.

To be perfectly blunt, one is not suppose to preform an OS update such as this while other non-OS related applications are running!

As a general rule before preforming an upgrade such as this I do a clean boot and do not open anything other then invoking the Software Update. I also usually download the Combo Update and apply that when dealing with point increase updates of the OS.

Luckily, I had a Time Machine/Time Capsule backup of the VM and was able to use it.

A word of advice: Always share your files with your host (Mac). In so doing your documents will be safe, even if your VM crashes and you have no backup. Try to not be in the latter situation.

    Just an FYI...

It is a known fact that Time Machine is not 100% reliable backing up/restoring Virtual Machines under all circumstances/conditions. Also backing up Virtual Machines via Time Machine is disk/time intensive and wastes a tremendous amount of space for something that may be corrupt and worthless come time to restore it. At a minimum I would exclude Virtual Machines from Time Machine and with the Virtual Machines shutdown, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed then manually copy the Virtual Machines Package(s) to an alternate location, preferably on to a different physical hard disk. Then keep the User Data that is stored within the Virtual Machine backed up off of the Virtual Machine on a regular basis so as to always have a current User Data Backup. If you have to restore a properly backed up Virtual Machine that is not as current at least you'll have a working Virtual Machine and current User Data to go forward with when you find out your Time Machine Backup of the Virtual Machine fails.

DB:3.57:Sql Guest Cluster Will Not Migrate To 3rd Hyper-V Cluster Node mz

The problem was that the NIC drivers on the 3rd node were a couple editions behind. When I installed the NIC drivers on all three servers I used the same installation media, but I think that an MS update must have installed a later NIC driver.I wonder
if the cluster validation wizard doesn't scan for this.

I'm trying to start a virtual machine from the command line that is on my Linux workstation (SLED 10 SP1 x86_64). I've added "msg.autoAnswer = TRUE" to the .vmx file. Unfortunately, when I attempt to start the virtual machine I get the following:

'screen' is included with OS X but I after I detach I cannot logout until I suspend the virtual machine in the X11 session. I don't think screen was meant to be used with X sessions but would love to be proven wrong.

I started vmrun with nohup, then closed the GUI window and clicked send to background and this worked. And a less complicated way is to use John's suggestion of 'nogui':

    deimos:~ vmrun start vmware/PGPUniversal-2.6.3/PGPUniversal-2.6.3.vmx nogui

    + Done vmrun suspend vmware/PGPUniversal-2.6.3/PGPUniversal-2.6.3.vmx

The link you provided is a bit Spartan Arch now uses Systemd and has for some time. You are going to look at the script is doing, but I have a hunch you are missing kernel modules -- Or you are not running that script with enough permissions to install kernel modules.

I have 5 virtual machines on a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V server (Sun hardware, but running MS Windows Server 2008 (not R2)), and after taking the server down and restarting it, one of the virtual machines gets to 50% of starting and then gives some error
    messages:
    1. Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller: Failed to power on with error: The system cannot find the drive specified.
    2. Failed to open attachment: ...\scsi#diskven_adaptecprod_array# .... Error: 'The system cannot find the drive specified
xxxxx failed to start (Virtual machine .......)
then a repeat of the error messages above, with name of virtual machines listed in the error messages.
The virtual machine (also a windows server 2008 machine) will not start. Can't find any information on what to try to get it started. Haven't had to do any troubleshooting with these as they've worked well for about 6 months.
The VHD's are on a local raid drive, as are the virtual machine files. The virtual machine files are only 1 KB for this virtual machine, but the VHD is 18 GB, so that file is still there. What should I try to get it to find the drive?
Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

DB:3.56:An Error Occurred While Attempting To Change The State Of Virtual Machine Xxxxxx - Virtual Machined Failed To Start ja

Hello - going into the settings helped me figure out what the problem was. I had an extra hard drive that something happened to, so it couldn't start that hard drive. It was just an external drive in the VM, so actually wasn't essential to
the VM, so I was able to remove it from the VM and the VM was then able to start. Thanks so much for the suggestions (from both of you!).

    Hola,
