I have an HP with a bad HDD. Want to install Windows 7 without all the garbage. Can I download Windows 7 and use the product key on the side of the computer instead of using the recovery disks with all the bloated software or am I required to buy a whole
    new license to windows?

DB:3.01:Reinstall A Non-Bloated Copy Of Windows On My Hp With A New Hdd cs

HP Systems come with an option to do a minimal install which includes just the operating system and drivers. I save yourself a lot of trouble and use that option instead.
HP includes a recovery partition that you can use to restore the system software to its original settings. With most OEMs, that’s a mixed blessing, because the system image also includes all the trialware and utilities that are so annoying.
HP includes that option, but it also includes a Minimized Image Recovery option that it describes as a “clean image.”

Sure enough, installing that option resulted in a squeaky-clean Windows install, with no crapware and no unnecessary utilities. The full OEM image includes 50 installed programs; the clean image has a mere 25, and it doesn’t force you to jump through any
extra setup steps after the restore is complete.
HP laptops come preloaded recovery partition will allow you to create a set of Hp restore disks that can be used to recover all of the original software in the event of a major problem by tapping the F10 or F11 key continuously when the PC is first boots
    up.

DB:2.95:Additional Non System Drive User Folders k1

    Hi

I have recently upgraded to W8 Pro on a new system comprising an SSD for the system drive and a conventional spinning HDD intended for additional storage.

Ideally I'd like an automated way that upon user login checks whether that user has an additional subset of user folders on my HDD and if not create them with that user being the owner with the appropriate permissions as they would have if these were the
ones on the system drive. Also to include these in that user's appropriate library folders.

If that isn't possible then I would like to know the correct permissions to use on the HDD please so I can alter the following HDD equivalent folders.

I've not altered any permissions on the following, just created a folder off the root of my HDD containing a folder to represent a user and beneath that additional folders to represent 'My HDD Documents', 'My HDD Music', 'My HDD Pictures' and 'My HDD Videos'.
    eg.
    HDD (D:)
    --User HDD Storage
    ----Username
    -------My HDD Documents
    -------My HDD Music
    -------My HDD Pictures
    -------My HDD Videos

Should the HDD root have the same permissions as the SSD as this differs at the moment with regards to 'Authenticated Users'?
On the SSD the 'Authenticated Users' have 'Access'=Modify (Modify, Read execute, List folder contents, Read, Write) which 'Applies to' Subfolders and files only. The SSD also has a second Principal entry for 'Authenticated Users' with 'Access'=Create
folders / append data, which 'Applies to' This folder only. On the HDD the 'Authenticated Users' have 'Access'=Modify... which 'Applies to' This folder, subfolders and files.

    fig.1
    http://i48.tinypic.com/15qdg0i.jpg

    fig.2
    http://i46.tinypic.com/5dugjo.jpg

If we then move on to the Users folder and something similar on the HDD...
Should I change the permissions on 'D:\User HDD Storage' to match 'C:\Users'?

    fig.3
    http://i46.tinypic.com/ou2ozk.jpg

    fig.4
    http://i46.tinypic.com/2eeyaz9.jpg

Then we have / need a folder in the root of 'Users'and'User HDD Storage' for each user...

    http://i46.tinypic.com/1hqoo4.jpg

    fig.6

Hi, I'm looking for examples of cube actions of type Proprietary. Although a few sites suggest they can be used for almost anything, it doesn't look like anyone has actually done so.Has anyone got these to work? Could I use them to start a .Net application when browsing a cube from Excel? If so, how?

DB:2.83:Cube Actions Of Type Proprietary - Any Examples? 87

In general, actions are ways that client tools can interact with SSAS in guided ways. So if you create a reporting action, the client tool can query SSAS using the MDSCHEMA_ACTIONS discover command when a user right clicks on a dimension member; then SSAS will tell the client tool that the user can run the following report that's relevant to that dimension member.Excel 2007, for example, only supports http(s) URL/report actions and drillthrough/rowset actions. Excel 2007 is coded to accept only those. You can't fire a proprietary action or a command line action via Excel 2007.If you wrote a client tool, you could discover (via MDSCHEMA_ACTIONS)Proprietary actions so that if your client tool is browsing a cube, one of the actions could launch an EXE or open a screen in the app. But that's all up to you. The action is just a communication mechanism.http://artisconsulting.com/Blog/GregGalloway

I had the Y2 13 for a while. Liked it a lot. There's another thread here about installing an SSD in your computer:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Yoga-2-13-Internals/m-p/1617084#M23031Most guys go with Crucial M500 drives...I bought a 480GB M.2 drive from Amazon; I recall that it was under $275. It's a pretty easy install if you've opened up other laptops, and there are several youtube videos that show you how. I then used Macrium's free cloning software to copy the partitions from the 500GB HDD to the 480GB SDD. This config would yield an incredible 980GB of storage, but I left the HDD unplugged to maximizebattery life. Only the fine folks at Lenovo would be able to answer your question about your warranty after opening it up, but there is no security tape or seal - so I don't know how they would be to tell if you've opened it or not.Don't bother with "converters" (it likely won't fit anyway), just use the empty M.2 slot for the new SSD drive. Assuming that your computer already has Windows 8/8.1 activated with the 500GB HDD, there won't be a problem cloning to the SDD - it won't ask you for a new key or to reactivate Windows. The entire process took me about 30 minutes.

I wouldn't make that assumption - that's just the carrier.  The screws and interposer board are separate parts.  Further, that's for a Studio 17 system - which is not the same as the Vostro 1700 (you need a carrier for a Vostro 1700/Inspiron 1720 - those two are the same system).

    These are the parts:

C7586 Hard Drive Carrier for HDD bay #2
XK231 Interposer (interfaces HDD to laptop)

plus the screw kit (seven screws) is separate.

    DB:2.77: Satellite L50-A-1cu - Can I Use Non-Toshiba Drivers For Intel Nvidia? j1

    Hi

Generally speaking yes you can use them. Problem is that such drivers are not supported and tested by Toshiba so you use them on own risk.

To be honest in last several years I’ve heard different stories about it. Some people are happy with better graphic performance.

Some people are complaining about very loud machine and permanent running cooling vent. Even after original recovery image installation the situation is same. I’ve heard that values in GPU BIOS will be changed and it is not possible to recover them to original and default settings.

There are also reports about switch offs as result of overheating.

I don’t know what to say about it. I use my machine with original drivers. I don’t want to risk anything. Of course with your machine you can do whatever you want so it is your decision.

If you will install them please be so nice and send us some feedback. It can be very useful for other notebook owners.

I have been given an unwanted Sun Ultra 5. It includes a 4Gb HDD and only 128Mb of RAM.

I have and can install a larger HDD but want to increase the RAM - to allow use of Solaris 5. I am having real problems finding suitable 128Mb RAM - in the UK.

Is it possible either to use higher capacity RAM or non-ECC RAM?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to alternatives?

    Hi bushmain,

The HP Recovery media would contain an image of Windows and your drivers as they were first installed at the factory. If it does request a CD key during the recovery. If another CD key is not provided with the media, you would use your existing CD key.

    Hi Niek

Andrej is absolutely right. Believe me this small connector can be removed but you must do it very gently and without using much force because you can damage the connectors.

Almost all notebooks use standard HDDs and your unit too. Just a small number of notebooks have 1.9 inch HDDs but your unit has definitely 2.5 inch inside.

I share a Mac with my wife. She likes iPhoto and I use Aperture.

So I imported all of our photos into Aperture, and that is where the fun begins. Twice as much disk space used (I have a MacBook Pro, so HDD space is not exactly abundant here). No integration with iLife apart from exporting all images and reimporting into iPhoto. And attaching different digital cameras - only one choice of program to connect to.

Ideally I'd like to only import RAW files from my DSLR into Aperture, and jpegs from the PAS into iPhoto. I'd also like iPhoto to have jpegs 'on the fly' of my Aperture library.

Oh, and by the way, I'd also like my wife and I to have a shared photo album that we can both contribute to non-destructively on the same machine.

Impossible? Probably ... any ideas? (keep praying ?)

I also have a gripe with programs that store data in their own proprietary format/database structure - mostly this happens for performance reasons - although this program seems to defy that particular notion.

I don't know if there is any integration between the other professional applications and the iLife suite - but I'm still struggling with 'do I create a scheduled automator job to copy pictures from Aperture to iPhoto and vice versa' (and the pain this will undoubtedbly bring me).

I guess that's a bit of a ramble, and my questions are - does anyone have a decent way to share Photo Albums on the same machine? and between Aperture and iPhoto? and finally do you think that Pro applications like Aperture should have iLife integration?

    MacBook Pro 2GHz 2Gb Mac OS X (10.4.6) Aperture 1.1.1 iLife 06 etc

    DB:2.73:Iphoto / Ilife / Aperture Integration fs

Just FYI, I wrote a program that allows you to use Aperture + iLife together. It's called Aperture2iLife, and you can buy it for $19.99 at http://lightboxsoftware.com/aperture/ (yes, I do benefit financially if you follow this link and purchase it, etc., etc.). I'll be posting an update in the next couple of days (free to anyone who's purchased Aperture2iLife) that provides complete compatibility with the Intel version of Aperture. I hope that solves your dilema, and let me know if you have any problems with it!

DB:2.72:Proprietary Non-Standard Usb Interface On My Passport 7j

    Hi

I have been using many types of USB drives for many years. If ever I got a problem reading the drive, I could pop out the drive from the case and use a USB-SATA plug kit to connect it to my PC to diagnose/backup/recover.

However, when I had a problem on a new My Passport I was shocked and dismayed to see it had a proprietary non-standard interface so I could not connect it to my recovery kit. I have come across some non-standard connections before (e.g. Dell) but they usually use a removable adapter - this one seems soldered/permanent on the My Passport so I am stuck.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

    tomhass

DB:2.72:Proprietary Non-Standard Usb Interface On My Passport 7j

What the OP means is that the Passport HDD that is contained in the enclosure cannot be taken out and connected to another PC or SATA enclosure because it has been hard modified with a micro USB connection and circuit board which cannot be removed off the drive. So basically if like mine the USB connection malfunctions, you're stuffed as you cannot use the drive with any other device and all data on it is lost.............

This is just a blatant fleece from WD. Most other companies like Dell and Iomega employ a SATA adapter interface which, (once you have removed the HDD from the enclosure), you can simply unplug from the drive and connect to another source should the circuit board software develop issues.

As it stands, if you can't get a replacement via the warranty your up the creek, but your up the creek any way as you won't get your data off it if you can't get it to connect via Micro USB which if the circuit board becomes compromised, you won't.

    Very, very shoddy imho.

Does Verizone use a proprietary data plugs? I'm trying to move the location of my modem and had to run new Cat5 cable. The plugs I got at Home Depot don't fit - too big. Is there another type?

Wikipedia states: There are two types of 8P8C plugs, sockets, and diesets (used for crimping): Western Electric/Stewart Stamping (WE/SS) and Tyco/AMP. While both types look remarkably similar, they are mutually exclusive and cannot be interchanged. Tyco/AMP 8P8C plugs are proprietary, and have smaller spacing between contacts than the WE/SS style.

Does Verizon use Tyco? Can we get them?

After that is answered, we likely will have some suggestions.

Such as a third party app from BlackBerry World to export your contacts to a CSV file, which can then be imported to most databases and smartphones.

Maybe I'm missing it in my documentation but can I use any power injector with this Aironet or do I have to use a proprietary device?

    DB:2.71:Poe With Aironet 1242ag 8x

    Hi Keith,

    You don't have to use a Cisco power injector (although I would :) as long as the type you used met the spec's below;

The Cisco Aironet 1240AG supports local power as well as Power over Ethernet (PoE), either by an IEEE 802.3af-compliant Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) device, such as a switch, or by a device capable of providing 12.95W to a Powered Device (PD) and compliant with Cisco Inline Power.

    POWER INJECTOR

A Cisco Aironet power injector can be configured to order, or can be ordered as a separate item (below). If the power injector is configured to your order, it will ship inside the packaging box of the access point. If the power injector is ordered as a separate item, it will ship in a separate box.

The power injector does not come with a power supply. Instead, it uses the power supply from the access point. If you intend to use the power injector, be sure that the power supply will be included with your access point, either by selecting the "AIR-PWR-A" option under the "Power Supply" category, or by taking no action for that category. Do not select "AIR-NO-PWR-SUPPLY" for the "Power Supply" category.

The power injector can be ordered separately. If you previously ordered the access point without a power supply, you will now need to order a spare power supply to use the power injector. See Table below for power supply spare part numbers.

Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series Power Injector Product Numbers

AIR-PWRINJ3 Cisco Aironet power injector for the 1240AG Series

AIR-PWRINJ3= Cisco Aironet power injector for the 1240AG Series (spare)

AIR-PWRINJ-FIB Cisco Aironet power injector media converter

Ive been flogging a lot of articles on the forums lately, and heres another:

    http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS2761311745.html

Author Steven Vaughan-Nichols discusses desktop development of Linux with Eric Raymond. I was particularly interested in Mr. Raymonds thinking about the use of proprietary software in Linux. Heres a quote:

Linux, Raymond is sure, also needs, one way or the other, to support proprietary equipment like iPods. When a twenty-something year old comes up to me and I talk to him about Linux, the first thing he wants to know is: Can I run my iPod on it? Saying, as some do, that Linux should only support non-proprietary, DRM-free (digital- rights- management- free) media formats, like Ogg Vorbis, misses the point. If desktop Linux doesnt become popular, no one will use it, and the open formats will become mere curiosities.

DB:2.71:Eric Raymond On Desktop Linux fd

there are good quality closed-source software around here. sure it could be open-source, and it would be even better from some users point of view.still, sometimes closed source is just better quality (i dont know if its because its closed-source, though).look out vmware stuff (and compare it to qemu - btw, kqemu is not open source).theres a poll about which browser do arch users use. guess whos 2nd : opera.its cool when a manufacturer like nvidia, or some printer manufacturers release linux drivers.

i use open source software whenever i can. but sometimes quality is just better in the closed source world (especially when it come to hardware drivers). and sometimes there is no equivalence for closed source software.i suppose both should co-exist.

    Hi pitiryakov,

If you have not created your own recovery media the disks can be purchased from support.

These will only work on the new hard drive if it has the same sector format as the original drive - that is 512 bytes as opposed the the new Advanced Format drives that use 4096 byte structure.

I have been looking at purchasing a new 2011 iMac but recent news has been talking about proprietary HDD Sata interfaces. Is this a real thing? It's important from a purchasing standpoint because i just purchased an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD hard drive (a $500 drive) to be used in the Mac that I get. I've used it in a new Macbook 2011 with no issues so I'm hoping this isn't true.

The RMI Adaptor gives access to the JBoss JMX MBeanServer, but is there a non-proprietary way I can directly access the server? I'm writing a client application to access my managed beans, and I don't want to tie it directly to JBoss in case we switch to another app server in production. Previously I've done this by creating a JMXServiceURL, then getting a JMXConnector and finally getting the direct connection to the MBeanServer from the connector.I've tried to connect by building a JNDI connector URL (used in the JMXServiceURL) like this: service:jmx:rmi://localhost/jndi/jmx/rmi/RMIAdaptorBut this just returns the RMIAdaptor object, so I get a ClassCastException because it's looking for an implementation of the Server - not the proprietary JBoss adaptor. I've not found anything online, so this is my last ditch effort before I have to change my design to designate specific implementations of an MBeanServerAccessor or something.

Does a BMP Entity Bean have to be backed by a relational database or could it be backed by a non-relational proprietary database? I have a case where we want to utilize EJBs but the database that contains the data doesn't support SQL and JDBC. We will have to access it with our own code. I am hoping that I can use BMP beans and just write all the method code ourselves. Is this possible? Do I have other options. Thanks.

DB:2.68:Bmp Entity Bean And Database 3f

I think, U need to have some driver if its a standard database. Otherwise if flat files then property or FileReader API can be of help. Again having Entity Bean will be an overkill, i propose to go in for Stateless session bean, have ur business method independently perform interaction with the data. If worried about locks then manage the UserLocking table in application, which maintains and releases locks in a single business method.

I bought a Dell 4700 about 1 year ago and I now want to upgrade its power supply. I am looking at an Antec power supply, so it won't be from Dell. I heard that Dell uses proprietary (non-standard) Power supplies and parts in their PC's, so that it would prevent me from doing this.

I heard since some things are only made for Dell, if I use another brand of Power Supply, it might fry some components due to the non-standard build. Does my Dell use these proprietary parts? Will I have a problem upgrading the power supply, or will things mess up and/or get fried?

Since Windows 2003 supports software raid 1. I am wondering whether we can use that functionality to protect the system HDD. Here is what I think.

    - I am using 500GB HDD as system disk.
    - I stop WHS and add another 500GB HDD.
    - Start WHS and define software raid 1 from the original system HDD to the new HDD.
    - Windows 2003 will keep the new HDD mirrored as the original system HDD.
    - If the original HDD fails, I move the new HDD to the physical port of the original HDD or redirect BIOD to boot from the new HDD and disable the Raid 1.
    - I will use another 500GB hdd for software raid again.

Any comments on this potentials? I would rather to spend a little more in order to save time in reinstalling WHS when system disk fails.

DB:2.64: What Is The Factory Default Structure Of The Hdd? c9

I have a failing HDD on a Satellite L755-1J5. I failed to create DVD backup discs. Duh!

While the main partition is defunct I can recover the everything from the recovery partition.

To avoid buying the recovery disks, and awaiting their arrival, my thought is that I can use a new HDD I have, and recreate the partition information, with the recovery partition files I've saved, using another computer.

Then plug it into the L755, and use the BIOS HDD recovery process as normal.

So, does anyone know the factory default structure of the HDD? Partition sizes, file/directory lists etc.

    Or is this a non-starter?

    Thanks!

DB:2.64: What Is The Factory Default Structure Of The Hdd? c9

Thanks, Silas. I guess I'm not surprised.

Just hoped that the 'Factory Default' structure had been made available somewhere.

It would be easy enough to create an identical partition and directory structure - if only it were known. It must be deterministic, as the BIOS based recover process 'knows' how to use it.

However, there must be some 'magic' bit, as it seems many have tried creating two partitions (the second identical in size to the Recovery Partition, containing the recovery directories and files), without success.

I shall await the recovery disks.....

In near frustration, I gratefully seek any and all input. (Especially from the moderator.)

When inserted in the PIII, the HDD refuses to be recognized, no matter what I do. There is no connector in use on the 4 outside HDD pins (though I have a connector and experimented using all formations). I repositioned the HDD on the caddy, reinserted the caddy, checked for snugness, checked the PIII setup/bios for possible solutions. When I turned the PIII on w/o a HDD at all, I merely got to the Dell logo screen only, so I know that with the HDD inserted, I get one step beyond that: messege of non-recognition.

I did read the FAQ entry about HDDs and followed all the suggestions therein. I also attempted to use the Dell Support e-mail inquiry system but to no avail.

Anything that anyone can add would be welcome.

    Hi,

Yes, you can install a ssd of a different capacity as long as it exceeds the the necessary capacity needed for the installation and to allow Hibernate.

The ssd must be in the primary bay if you want to install the OS to it - this is the only bootable bay.

I don't work for HP, but I would guess that the reason the secondary bay is not bootable is because HP intended this for whatever reason - there is no option in the bios menu to be able to alter this.

I have around 500 computer connected to DC in Domain environment. Problems i am facing is i have to go to clients workstation if client need any extra softwares like Mysql, winrar, acrobat or any microsoft proprietary or non proprietary softwares.
i am thinking of software or packages that that can remotely connect to the client and provide administrative passwords.

DB:2.63:Addtional Software Installation For Ad Clients 1a

What you are looking for is a deplyment tool.
You can do basic deployment using GPO, but if really need to manage
the installed software, Microsoft's solution is SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager). However many commercial tools exist for the same purpose.

I purchased a laptop with Win8 which uses an intel chipset and hd4000 graphics, in order to use directv2pc, and watch shows recorded on my h34. After installation, the program would open and allow me to choose a show, but then gave me a screen capture protection not supported error.

Before purchasing the laptop, I was not aware of a blanket problem affecting win 8 and the hd4000 integrated graphics, no mention is made at the cyberlink advisor for the program.

Researching a solution for the problem I found an Intel support forum which had looked into the problem, and found:

"Intels Windows 8 drivers only support OS methods to protect video content. The current version of DirecTV2PC software only attempts to use old proprietary methods on Intel hardware.

Other vendors are still using the same methods they did on previous OSes. (either OS or their own proprietary methods which are compatible with Windows 8).

In any case, Intel does not support the older proprietary methods that were used in Windows 7.

Unfortunately, DirecTV2PC only attempts to use old proprietary methods on Intel hardware.

This is not something that Intel can fix. Intels old proprietary interfaces are incompatible with Windows 8."

Will there be an update to the program?

This problem is frequently driving me insane since years ago:

If you: 1. have a nvidia card 2. use the proprietary driver and 3. use a non-OpenGL compositor- you WILL get tearing no matter what (at least for videos in mplayer).

Over the months/years I tried my best to find any solution I can. Here are the solutions I collected:

Compiz with very specific settings (see my second post here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137893 )

Gnome Shell (Mutter compositor) with the following line in /etc/environment
    CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling

can we use JAXB to give output as non-xml format
string (fixed length strings)? Not really, no. It sounds like you're looking for a proprietary format, which begs for a "roll-your-own" solution.

DB:2.62:Re: Java Value Objects To Fixed-Length Flat File? xp

But as business requirements change or new
integration happens.. it is possible, You can count on it.

    java beans get
more data elements.. so i want solution which is
flexible easy to change or experiment ..during
development and after being deployed. I would create two classes for representing the copybook layout. One for the whole thing and another for each element. Each field will have the length type and any special formatting rules. i.e. you will have mutiple types of field classes implementing the Field interface. Then put these in a LinkedHashMap and as you are adding them set another field which will be the offset from the beiginning of the record. The Record class will hold these Fields and other Records.

Then create a schema text file format and load that in on startup. Then you buld the data like a you would a DOM model in your application.

I wish someone had done that in our code instead of copying, pasting and editing this:
    int length = 10;
int offset = 500;a bazillion times. That's real fun when you want to add fields. The damn methods aren't even in consecutive order.

I have a Dimension 4400. I am upgrading to a new computer and would like to take the hard drive that came with the 4400 and place it in a standard external enclosure to use as a USB drive [not the boot drive, though]. My question is whether the hard drive that came with the 4400 is a standard type hard drive or some kind of proprietary drive that only works in Dell systems and won't work in an external enclosure? If you know, please tell me. Thanks.

Dell does not use proprietary hard drives. The hard drive used in the D-4400, should bethe 3.5"standard IDE/EIDE/ATA [aka PATA] drive.

    That is strange.

However, are you just trying to determine 7970 from the others? I ask this because its a common need, and you can get away with checking for image/png in the accept header, which is only present for the color phones.

I already have two hard drives in my Dimension 4700 but could definitely use another HDD.

Can the 3.5 floppy drive bay house a standard 3.5 hard drive? What
kind of bracket do you need to do that? I took out the floppy drive,
which I dont think Ive used for the last 4 years, and tried to
substitute a 3.5 hard drive in its place, but the screw holes in the
floppy drive bracket would not coincide with the screw holes on the HDD.

I can easily get brackets for a standard 3.5 hard drive at a retail
computer shop, but will such bracket be compatible with my Dimension
4700 case? Dell makes many parts proprietary, so Im worried that the
3.5 floppy drive bay in Dimension 4700 was designed to be used only for
    floppy drives.

    Any thoughts or experiences?

    DB:2.62:Using A Gpt-Initialized 3.0tb Hdd In External Enclosure 8d

    Greetings to all.

Before adjudicating this question "stupid," please remember that if I had the answer to this question, I wouldn't be posting. You have to learn somewhere.

I have seen much in the way of information regarding the initialization formats for HDD use in Windows. I am aware that MBR doesn't support HDDs over 2.2TB, and that much of the trouble that people have reported in using GPT-initialized HDDs is often the
result of out-of-date HDD controllers. I'm now looking at this from a little bit of a different angle.

I am curious as to what anyone's experience may be/have been in using a 3.0TB HDD in an external USB 3.0 enclosure. I'm a bit leery of it, and here's why. I am a digital DJ, and as such, my music collection often grows monthly. I was given a 3.0TB 3.5"
HDD to upgrade my storage from a well-worn 1.0TB HDD which is nearing capacity. This external HDD came as a complete unit (enclosure and all, major name brand - won't mention because I don't know if that would violate TOS here). I transferred all the data
over to the higher capacity drive (after having initialized it GPT), but after some additional thought, the fact that the unit came with a proprietary connector (on the hard drive end) made it somewhat less-than-optimal for my purposes (just take it at face
value). As a result,I decided to transfer thehard disk from inside the proprietary enclosureto a different, more generic 3.0TB-capable enclosure without the proprietary connector mess. When I connected the 3.0TB drive,
with all the data already transferred and simply switched from one enclosure to another, to the same computer, I got a message saying that the disk had to be initialized before I could use it. This left me scratching my head, thinking, "I thought
    I already initialized it!"

Needless to say, the data was lost, and I had to spend another day or so re-copying it back over to the drive, once again initialized GPT, in its new home.

I'm a bit paranoid, now, about -- say -- connecting this HDD enclosure to another computer for fear that something about external GPT-initialized disks kinda become "one-person dogs," basically usable only with the computer they were initialized on. Subsequent
connections of this external drive to the computer it was initialized on show that it appears to be working just fine, but there may be times when I want to connect this drive to another one of my DJ computers, and I don't want it to tell me "This disk must
be initialized before it can be used" on the other computer. Anytime I've switched enclosures or computers with smaller HDDs, there has been no problem with cross-compatibility or recognition. This is new to me, and I'm not as well-versed on this as, perhaps,
    others out there might be.

Can anyone provide me with some insight regarding this? Should I be able to use a high-capacity external GPT-initialized HDD on another machine (both running the exact same OS, Win7x64) without it telling me that the disk needs to be re-initialized on the
    new machine?

    DB:2.62:Using A Gpt-Initialized 3.0tb Hdd In External Enclosure 8d

The external hard drive originally came as a
Western Digital My Book 3TB. This drive was given to me by someone I work with, who is somewhat less-than-savvy regarding computer peripherals, storage, and configuration. Nevertheless...

Because it came with a proprietary connector, which does not suit my overall purposes, I took their enclosure apart, extricated the 3.5" HDD inside, and transplanted it into a
Vantec NexStar CX SuperSpeed. The My Book does not use a generic SS-USB cable as does the Vantec.

I do mobile digital DJing, and I built a small portable podium which houses all of my wiring, power supply, wireless mic receiver, etc., and getting wires in and out of it is a pain at this point, so I have purchased duplicate wiringto use when I need to
take certain components out to use alone without the podium (i.e. the computer's power supply, the external HDD power supply, and the USB connector for the external HDD). I sometimes like to bring just those components with me if, say, I'm meeting with a
client and doing some planning with them. This being said, it's considerably easier for me to deal with generic wiring as opposed to proprietary stuff, particularly in areas such as being able to select different wire lengths, etc. I can just pop down to
my nearby Micro Center and grab whatever I want as opposed to having to find a longer wire from Western Digital.

Anyway, I'll try what you said, and if it asks me to initialize the disk, I'm going to do absolutely nothing of the sort, and try hooking it back up to the original machine to see if the data is safe.

I would hope that it would be, but after my initial experience, I thought it sane to put the question out there.

I agree that the micro usb connectors seem pretty flimsy. The plug does not seem to fit snugly into the socket on the drive.

You only need to move the drive slightly, the cable will wobble in the socket, and the connection to the drive will be lost. I dare not move the drive at all during a read or write operation. I just took my new 750GB Passport of its packet this week, and was disappointed to find how unreliable this connection was.
