Simple question, is it possible to copy a Virtual Machine from 1 ESX host to another ESX host without shutting the virtual machine down?

DB:3.78:Copy Virtual Machine To Another Host? fx

    Thanks guys,

Basically what I am going to do is turn it off and make a clone of the machine because the one is going to be on another ESX host in a suspended state and if the first host fails I will simply unsuspend the second.

Have started a project to implement a SAN however until this is done I dont have shared storage and as such cant use features like vmotion, ha, etc.

    Thanks again

    Hi,

I wanted to know is there anything i need to do extra when i move a vmware images (the whole vmware image, all the files *.vmdk's and other) from one host OS to another host OS. The different host OS's have different hardware configurations, and i would asume that due to the virtual state of the machines, they shouldnt be affected. But ive noticed that after i created a 2003 virtual machine on my desktop at home, and transfered it using a external HD to another desktop at work, and ran the virtual machine there i either had a high rate of crashing and blue screens, or i would get an error related to the ".\???" file. I mean it still works, but i wanted to know is there anything i have to do? maybe reinstall the vmware tools or something else.

    Thank you in advance

I transfer VM's from my Linux host to my Windows host without any problems. I also have customers send me their VM's all the time and run them with out any problems.

Just check the .vmx files for any hard coded files paths that do not exist on the system you transfered the VM to.

If you do get a BSOD, write down the stop code error and search on MSDN, google, VMware forms...etc for possible cause.

I have a bit of a conundrum. I forget to setup a cluster in Vcenter before creating my virtual servers, including my Vcenter Server Virtual machine.

What I need to do is move my Vcenter server from one host (not in the cluster) to another host (in the cluster). I'm pretty sure if I try to use VMotion that it will do weird things since by using Vmotion on the VCenter Virtual server I will lose connection with Vcenter during the transfer and it will fail.

I'm thinking I should shutdown Vcenter and then manually remove it from the one host and import into the other host in the cluster, but I'm not sure on the procedure to do this.

What is the best (and safest) way to acomplish this?

then i thought of trying something else.

Basically, what I did was, I downloaded magic iso and converted my Oracle Cluster software to iso and then went to the virtual machine and

edited the CD Drive to point to the iso file and then powered on my virtual machine and then I could see the Oracle Cluster software under /media.

Thanks a lot for your helpful suggestions, guys, I really appreciate it, I'm glad something worked in the end, though it was a pretty roundabout way to do something

    Welcome to the forums!

Can you use a larger font, please!!!

To connect the guest OS's wit hthe host OS you can use:

    1. Standard network share via the virtual network connections

Just like you would connect physical machines over the network. You have the following options for example:

Bridged - the virtual guest justr behaves like any other host on the network. It needs its own network IP setup and you can connect to any machine this way, inlcuding the host.

Host-Only (VMnet1) - it's an isolated network where onle the guests and the host participate, but it works like a physical network.

    2. VMware Workstations Shared Folder option

You can enable the Shared Folder option for each guest individualy. Enable it in the guest options, choose a folder of the host to share and install the VMware Tools inside the guest (you should always install the VMware Tools).

For more on exchanging data between the systems read: http://pubs.vmware.com/ws65_ace25/ws_user/transferfiles.10.1.html

DB:3.32:Creating Two Virtual Adapters Creates Real Catastrophe On Networking Config 9d

I was trying to create a Windows 2003 virtual web server on a Windows 2003 Host with two virtual adapters: one for administration interfaces and one for the public web server. I implemented this as two virtual adapters each with a 255.255.255.0 subnet, and then attached one virtual adapter to each of the ethernet cards in the VMWare console. The result was complete breakdown of networking in VMWare.

First, with default route set to one of the two virtual adapters, a simple command like nslookup gives this result, as shown in Wireshark sniffer with inspection of Mac addresses at each packet transfer:

    1) At start of nslookup, virtual machine does a reverse query on the IP of the DNS server and gets a correct response. So far very good.

    2) After receiving response packet, virtual machine now sends out the actual query for the host that was the argument to nslookup to a completely NON EXISTENT MAC Address. No physical or virtual adapter on the host or virtual machine has the target MAC! The sniffer running in the virtual machine shows the virtual machine using the ARP protocol to get the MAC address of the machine associated the IP of its gateway. What comes back from ARP is this imaginary MAC that is unreachable and doesn't correspond to any physical or virtual adapter. It looks like the VMWare ARP implementation is just broken for this modestly complex two adapter scenario.

    3) At this point outgoing packets get sent to the imaginary MAC, at which point the packets just go into some twilight zone and I cannot see them at the host. Needless to say, no response comes back, and the packets never leave the host's external interface.

At this point I concluded that VMWare on two virtual adapters is hopelessly broken and buggy, and I go with plan B to just use one virtual adapter. But how do I get rid of the second adapter? I removed it from the VMWare Settings interface in the console and restarted the virtual machine. I then tried reconfigure the one remaining interface to the correctly IP, but as soon as I do this I get a message from Windows that I have duplicated the IP of another adapter. I went to Device Manager and enabled viewing hidden devices. But there is no second adapter with the same name showing there!! Inside of the virtual machine running Windows 2003, how do I delete this duplicate adapter definition so that Windows can be reconfigured with a single adapter?

I'm in VMWare networking hell, and I would appreciate any guidance on how to recover.

On a Vista box, I have a MS Virtual 2007 virtual machine running XP.
I just got a Windows 7 box. I copied over the virtual machine files from the XP box:
    - .VHD (Virtual Hard Drive file)
    - .VMC (Virtual hard drive settings file)
I then created a new virtual machine in Windows 7 based on the Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine; I enabled the Integration Features and checked all the drives.
Original Title: Created a new virtual machine in Windows 7 based on a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine (from an XP box); cannot access host (Windows 7) drives from virtual machine
When I then run the new virtual XP machine in Windows 7, everything runs fine (and faster as well).
The one issue I'm experiencing, however, is that I cannot access the host (Windows 7) drives from virtual machine, even though I've shared the drives on Windows 7.
BTW, if I run the built-in "Windows XP Mode" virtual machine, I see the host drives when I run Windows Explorer from within that virtual machine.
What is it that I'm missing? (BTW, it was a *ton* easier in MS Virtual PC 2007; I simply "mapped" a shared drive in the Settings dialog and then see that drive when I run Windows Explorer from within that virtual machine.)
Another thought: should I simply abandon the above, install MS Virtual PC 2007 on the Windows 7 box and then create the virtual machine with MS Virtual PC 2007 (in lieu of the built-in Windows Virtual PC in Windows 7)?

    Hi folks!

Our company has a large number of

Since we do not have the paid ESX Server, I cannot

use VirtualCenter or vMotion to transfer virtual machines from one place

them to the new datastore, all using the vSphere Client. The problem

with this is that I have found it to be extremely slow. It can take

    Does anyone know of a

better way to do this that would decrease the transfer time?

Thanks to everyone for your quick replies! The Veeam FastSCP solution worked perfectly for us! Since all of this work is being done on our internal network, behind a firewall, with none of the relevant ports exposed to the Internet, the security issue was not a concern for us.

I have also found the VMware Converter standalone to be useful as well, but FastSCP is really the type of solution I was looking for in this particular case.

Once you migrate a running virtual machine from host "a" to host "b" with VMotion, can host "a" be powered off (provided you've migrated all virtual machines off host "a")? Or does VCenter keep some information about the migrated virtual machine on host "a"?

The home directories are left behind after a VMotion. A little bit annoying if you ask me. VirtualCenter 2 addresses this.

We installed Virtual Server 2005 on a different server and it works fine. So I guess there's something unique about the original server (it is a little old, I'm guessing the NIC) that makes it not want to work.
Whatever....I'm just glad it's working now and I can proceed...

When I FTP GET a file from the Linux virtual machine down to the Windows machine, end of lines are not converted from Unix to DOS style. It doesn't matter that I use ASCII command to go into ascii mode; when I do the GET, it indicates it is opening a binary mode connection. (I am using the ftp client that came with Windows.) I can use the same procedure to FTP get a file from another Linux server and the eols are converted as expected. I can only guess this has something to do with VMWare?

This has been available for a loong time in Parallels. Why don't VMware catch up and enable this by default? Having the VM's drive (C:\, D:\ etc) mounted on your Mac desktop is one of the best features in Parallels.

Correct me if I'm wrong however Parallels does not automatically mount virtual hard drives the same way VMDKMounter is doing it in that with the virtual machine shutdown, not suspended being able to mount the disk. Parallels can do the same thing but it's not automatic when a virtual machine is not running.

On the other hand when a Parallels virtual machine is running yes it does automatically create a mount point to the root of the disk and this is a nice feature and just one of many shortcomings under Fusion at the present time.

Hi:I have a Dell 2950 2008 x64 STD Hyper-V machine connected to a Dell MD3000i iSCSI SAN. I have a Dell 1950 2008 x64 STD machine running SCVMM 2008 to manage it. I created another LUN on the SAN (mapped to the same host) and used the migration feature of VMM 2008 to transfer the guest to the new location. I wanted to reconfigure the initial virtual disk. When looking at the ratings of the possible Hosts, under SAN explanation I see Virtual Machine Manager cannot transfer virtual machine over to the SAN because the host does not have a Virtual Disk Service (VDS) hardware provider installed. The migration goes smoothly, no errors but it takes ~ 2 hours for a guest approximately 80GB in size to transfer. I'm not sure how to resolve the SAN explanation above. Any help is apreciated.thanks

1] On a unix box ( this can be a virtual machine ) places -- connect to server

2] choose the service type as "SSH"

3] In the server field choose the IP adress of the host machine on which the virtual machine is a guest.

4] Mention the port number on which you have done the SSH port forwarding using the virtual network wizard.

And that's it this would give you a short cut to the machine on your Unix desktop.

For windows u can use putty , since i used it to connect to a virtual unix box

DB:3.14:Moving Virtual Machine From 64-Bit Host To 32-Bit Host 99

I read in the documentation for Workstation 6 in chapter 8, page 188 that it isn't possible to move a virtual machine from a 64-bit host to a 32-bit host. This is a little bit of a concern for me since if I have trouble with my 64-bit host it will be easier and quicker to come up with a 32-bit temporary replacement. I decided to test this and, if it proved not to work, I wanted to see if I could import the 6.x virtual machine from the 64-bit host as another 6.x virtual machine on a 32-bit host. I never got as far as the latter experiment. The virtual machine from the 64-bit host seemed to run just fine on the 32-bit host.

I'm working with 6.0.0, build 45731. The 64-bit host is Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition SP2 with an Intel Core2 Quad Core Q6600 processor. The 32-bit host is Windows XP Professional SP2 with an Intel Pentium 4 with HyperThreading enabled. The virtual machine is Windows XP Professional SP2.

Is the documentation wrong? Was this a fluke or can I expect the virtual machines I develop on the 64-bit host to run nicely on a temporary 32-bit host?

I'm not sure how it could matter, but I'll add that the virtual machine on the 64-bit host was imported from a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine.

    Thanks.

DB:3.14:Moving Virtual Machine From 64-Bit Host To 32-Bit Host 99

Based on the URI of the help page, it would seem that an ambiguous page from the documentation for Workstation 5 was mistakenly included in the documentation for v6. My experience, and apparently that of others, contradicts the statement that 32-bit v6 guests created on 64-bit v6 hosts cannot be moved to 32-bit v6 hosts.

On Vista as a host, I have another virtual Vista machine. I want to be able to at least ping the virtual machine from the real Vista in a host only config (I don't need the virtual machine to serve anything on the network).

I tried fixed IPs, but they don't seem to be pingable. I fiddled around and tried using others' configs, but still can't get it to work.

    The Virtual Network Editor shows:

    VMnet0 - bridged to ...

    VMnet1 (Host-only) - subnet 192.168.216.0

    VMnet8 (NAT) - subnet 192.168.255.0

    They're all enabled.

However, pinging the fixed IP entered within the guest from the host results in "unreachable".

Pinging either 192.168.216.1 or 192.168.216.2 results in replies.

Should I just use these? Why isn't the fixed IP working?

Something like right click on a exe file (in the host machine), select an option such as Run in VM mode and the app will run in the virtual machine.
Some of those applications may run in Windows Azure hosting environment directly via Process.Start, others may not. I would like to suggest you togive them a try first. Note Windows Azure is a server environment, so we cant click an exe file
to run it. We have to programmatically start a process, and that process cannot interact with user.
If the requirement is not supported in Windows Azure today, you can also submit a feature request on

DB:3.11:Copy A Vm Backup Drive To Another Machine? m1

Does anyone know how to copy a VM's drive to another machine without shutting down the VM? We have Windows Server 2008 running on a VM, which is using Windows Server Backup to backup the entire contents of the server to another (virtual) drive on the VM. So, we have C: and D: drive, which are being backed up to a hidden drive (what would be E:). Because Windows Server Backup hides the E: drive, I cannot transfer the backup contents to another machine. So, I am wanting to instead transfer the entire virtual drive from the host to another machine. Is this possible without shutting down the VM? It is important that the server VM stay running as much as possible. These backups are performed daily, incrementally, using Windows Server Backup. I believe transferring the backup drive to another machine (off-site) once a week would be sufficient.

DB:3.11:Copy A Vm Backup Drive To Another Machine? m1

There are several VMware specific backup tools that can help you with this.

I personally use Veeam Backup - but this is just one of many tools that will do what you need.

If it is a one-off though - I'd also take the VMware converter approach.

    Machine D: Virtual B (Ethernet)

Host runs DNS, Active Directory and DHCP; Domain to Client

    Hi

I don't know much about Token Ring but maybe one of these two might help.

    1. configure your host for routing

    2. setup a network-bridge in your host connecting the two nics and assign VMware-bridge 0 to it.

    Thanks

DB:3.10:Best Way To Create A Image From A Virtual Machine 3f

If you want to move it from one vm machine on a host

to a vm machine on another host, just copy the files.

Only thing that is a problem there is if you are

using bridged networking obviously if you both ran

the machine you'd have dup names etc on the network.

If its NAT'd or host only, this is not an issue.

If its a windows box on bridged, run sysprep on the

new copy (while the other isnt up), if its linux,

    just change the name.

Can i use winrar or winzip? because 4 - 6 gb is not easy to move from 1 machine to another.

    Afternoon
As part of a Cluster Storage Upgrade to change the format of our CSV's from MBR to GPT. I am trying to move VM's into a new CSV using Virtual Machine Manager - Migrate Storage. If the the VM's are below a certain size they migrate without issue. If thetotal
size of allthe VHD's in theVM i am trying to Migrate is larger than the Host Server's physical CDrive (all Host Servers are identical), i get the following message even though there is plenty of free space available on the CSV.
    Error (1222)

    Recommended Action

Why does the Migrate Storage featurerequirefree space on the root of the C drive on the HyperV Host, when the VM being migrated is actually held on theC:\ClusterStorage\Volume3and is being migrated to C:\ClusterStorage\Volume6. These
locations are located on the SAN, not the root of C.Have read a forum post saying that i need to remove the Host Servers from VMM and re-add them in using FQDN. Is there a best practice guide for this procedure? Does it make any difference?Other than carrying out an export/import using hyperV is their another method to perform the Migrate Storage

    DB:3.09:Scvmm 2008 R2 - Migrate Storage a8

    Thank you for your response.
We are currently running SC VMM 2008 R2 SP1 Rollup 2.
We have looked over the article. Weare not trying to do a P2V to CSV. We are trying to migrate storage of an existing highly available VM fromone CSV to another. We have had multiple problems trying to achieve this:
    1. Any VM that was Highly available failed using Migrate Storage
    2. Any VM's that had a vhd or avhd in a sub folder failed
    3. Any VM that had vhd's\avhd's with a total size larger than the free space of the HyperV Host C drive failed.

We have found a resource intensive and time consuming approach to working around these issues by doing the following:
    1. Remove any VM from High Availablilty before attempting any Migrate Storage operations
    2. Move any VHD's\AVHD's in subfolder to the root VM folder. This caused its own issues that we had further work arounds for.
    3. Disconnect any VHD'sona VM that would exceed the existing free space on the HyperV Host C Drive. Then wemanually moved them to the new CSV Folder (TopLevel). Then used Migrate Storage to move the VM into the new CSV, copy the VHD's
(in the CSV root folder)into the VM root folder and re attached them.
    4. Made VM Highly available again.

ShouldVMM 2008R2 SP1 Rollup 2 allow us do this job cleanly, and if so how?,or are there bugs/known issues that force admins to use workarounds?

The .lck files and folders are created once the VM is accessed by a VMware product like VMware Server, Workstation, ... to protect the VM against use by multiple users. Since the VMware Server service on the source was most likely running and the VM was registered, the .lck files existed and since you copied them over to the new host you ran into this issue. Deleting these files once (or not copying them at all) is sufficient.

    Hi RamboJohn,

You don't need port forwarding actually. If you want to access your VM on another Mac, you could enable "Remote display over VNC" or your VM.

1.Open VM settings and click "Advanced" pane.

    2.Check "Remote display over VNC"

3.Click the triangle and enter a password and a port NO expect "5900", say you could use 5901

    4. Close settings pane.

Then on the other Mac which you want to access the VM, use "Command+k" to launch the "Connect to Server" finder window, enter "vmc://[IP of your Mac on which the NAT VM is running]:5901", wait for the authentication window, then enter the password you just set on your VM settings.

OK, you could remote your NAT VM now

    from lspci:

02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

    and

The working card I can't access right now, but I'm sure has a Broadcom card, and it works properly.

When I try the suggested command, the pc refuses to do it with the following output:

Cannot set device scatter-gather settings: Operation not supported

    felix@mail:~$ sudo ethtool -K eth0 tso off

Cannot set device tcp segmentation offload settings: Operation not supported

As you can see, I had to remove parameters one by one (well, two each time, really) to get the next message. It seems the 8139too driver won't support that operations....

So, the problem is still here for me.

    Hi,

1st of all, you should have found the solution fot that by using the search engine, thats many times asked before. Anyway, if you use Virtual Center you can "cold migrate" them, just by using this function inside the VC.

If not, just mount a SMB (or any other supported target) ressource on your ESX box, export the *.vmdk by using the vmkfstools -i command. After that, mount the same ressouce on the target ESX and import the machine in the same way.

Again, thanks for the help. Unfortunately this is getting far to complicated for a user such as myself. I do have one question though... Before trying anything last night I wanted to create a backup of windows XP just in case I messed things up further. When I tried to copy XP into another folder it froze, leading me to believe that the XP file is corrupted, missing a file, etc. Could my solution be as simple as reinstalling XP over the existing one to try and correct those errors? Is that possible?

The primary reason I suggested you use KNOPPIX is because you said "I have hundreds of hours of work I hoping is still there, if not, I'm screwed."!

While using KNOPPIX is one method of attempting to recover data it is not the only choice however IMO it is a very safe way to boot and analyze the virtual hard disk as it's mounting the virtual hard disk, by default, Read Only and also provides the environment necessary to move recovered data to an external source (at least to the Virtual Machine) to the Host's hard drive and or an external FireWire/USB device or the Network, etc.

Exactly why your copy failed I can't conclusively answer because I do not have enough information to render an opinion without asking you a bunch of question and I'm sorry I just don't have the time to at the moment.

Lets face it when I read something like "When I tried to copy XP into another folder it froze, leading me to believe that the XP file is corrupted, missing a file, etc." it really is meaning less from a diagnostic stand point because that are just not enough details! Here is just two of a half a dozen or so questions that I'd have to ask just to start diagnosing... Was there an error message? You say it "froze" is it unfreeze on its own or what actions did you take etc, etc...

There is a very good reason for the HOWTO: Ask (and Answer) Questions document and without explicit and specific details being given it can be as fun as having a tooth pulled trying to get information from a user to help them!

If I was copying a Folder or File and a normal Fusion Virtual Machine is at a minimum 3 file in a folder that from Finder looks just like a file however is not, it's a folder containing the various files that comprise the actual Virtual Machine. Now if my system froze while copying it the first thing I'd do it reboot the system and then try copying again an if it froze again I'd boot the system with a KNOPPIX CD/DVD and try copying to an attached external drive and if it failed I'd then boot the system with the OS X DVD and run Disk Utility and Verify Disk and Verify Permissions. And this is just a generalized process I mention as each issue while I may take similar steps to diagnose/troubleshoot I have to make the decision on all the information in front of me and sometimes that extremely difficult to do through a message board.

The bottom line with the information I have in your case I'd attempt to recover the data first using KNOPPIX at which point once you have the data you can try anything else and not worry because you have the data! So if at this point you don't care about the data or having a backed up copy of the Virtual Machine before you modify it then by all means try other scenarios including a repair install of the OS. Good Luck!

    Hello Together,

i have to migrate 4 Windows 2003 Guests running on a Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 64bit host to another Host also running Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 64bit but different hardware.

When i use the Assistent within Virtual Machine Manager 2007 to do that, how is the process? Does the source machine have to be offline for the Migration? Is there anything other to take care of?

What is Virtual Machine Manager doing during the migration? I only want to understand the whole process.

DB:3.05:Migrate Guest From One Host To Another 9d

Going from Virtual Server to Virtual Server there are no big gotchas.

All of the hardware is emulated, so the portability between identical platforms is practically seamless.

During the migration your VM will need to be powered down, then the VM and its configuration file are copied across the network, then you power the VM on.
In theory the process works like this:
    Unregister VM
    Copy VM config and VHD
    register VM

In the case of a SAN migration (if your configuration is capable of that) things happen mutch faster as the LUN that the VM is installed on is literally detached from your first host and then attached to your new host and the VM is registered.

The process is the same in SCVMM 2008.

Copy VHD using BITS (across TCP/IP)
    Attach VHD to VM

DB:3.05:Scvmm Migrate Virtual Machines By Itself? c1

    Hi,
The SCVMM do migrate automatically, I check the job and get the following tip:

To free additional CPU resources, pro will migrare virtual machine XXX from host XX to XXusing the transfer type network.

I do not want to the SCVMM do this, please help.

DB:3.05:Scvmm Migrate Virtual Machines By Itself? c1

Also, there are two ways to turn on SCOM integration. One is to let SCOM do everything automatically (similar to VMware DRS) then other is to simply advise and allow an administrator to make the judgement call (then impact to users can be considered).
It sounds as if you have SCOM integration set-up and you are getting PROTips and you are allowing things to happen automatically.
However, since the transfer type of network has shown up, then your VM will be shut down, copied, powered on, etc.
The Automatic PRO actions only fit well with Host Groups that are clusters. So you might want to re-think how you have your Host Groups defined and the associated PRO settings for each Host Group.

    DB:3.04:Moving Virtual Machines 99

I'm new to ESXi having used Virtual Server prior to this and have a simple question about moving virtual machines from one host to another. WIth Virtual Server it was simply a case of copy the Virtual Machine files and load them in to the new Virtual Server. Is it the same with ESXi?

I do not have Virtual Center and currently only have one ESXi host on my site. I have built a Virtual Machine on this but this host needs to be moved to another site which will free up another more powerful server to come back and be the Virtual Host for my site. This virtual machine is needed here so I need to take a copy, remove it from the current host, swap the physical servers, create a new host and copy this virtual machine back on to the new host. Sounds straightforward but I want to know if I will be able to load this virtual machine on to the new host after I've done all the physical moving around.

    Thanks for your help.

Copying virtual server directory to another host machine never seems to work properly, as I can never get an IP address (other than local loopback). Restarting the network with '/etc/init.d/networking restart' gives the following output:

    SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

Bind socket to interface: No such device

    Failed to bring up eth0

Is this an ethernet driver issue? Should I expect to be able to transfer VM to another host machine and then start-up without issue, or have I forgotten to do something?

Sorry, an oversight. Host is WinXP, guest is Ubuntu server 6.06. But the original VM was generated on a Vista host before I wiped it off and 'upgraded' back to WinXP. I could never get the guest VM network to work again afterwards.

    Hi,

I have installed VMware Server 2 on my desktop pc with windows xp as host computer. In vmware server 2 I have virtual machine with windows xp again, when I working on my host pc and using virtual machine everything run great. The problem begin when I want connect to my virtual machine from another pc, actually, my laptop with ubuntu 9.04. I can access to host computer through port 8333 and power on my virtual machine. I can work in my virtual machine from my laptop but I haven't any sound in it. Sound card is installed correctly and I can hear sound on host pc in my virtual machine. On laptop sound card of course works fine but in virtual machine can't hear anything.

Could someone give any advice what to do?

DB:3.03:Sound Problem In Vm On Wmware Server 2 ps

I am not shure but following should be the problem. Due that your Guest XP is running on the machine where the server is located it uses that resources (sound card, nic ect...). Check if you can change the config to client's sound card for example on the player plugin's icon...

it is the icon on the right (the flames)

The other way would be to download the VMWare player and run your machine on your laptop with the player. In that case the guest uses your local resources.

I am now remote desktoping to the host machine from another site and I am able to start the Virtual machine up. However when I try to input into the virtual machine it does not except input, the mouse does not work nor the keyboard. Have tryed the Ctrl G for direct input and that does not work. I am able to move the Ace screen around, communicate with the vmware player menu and even take a snapshot of the machine. It is just the actual virtual OS machine I cannot use.

Am I missing a setting or is it not possible to use a virtual machine when remoting to the host machine via remote desktop?

I'm a beginner in Vmware.Let me first explain my problem, we have a XP host and linux in a virtual machine on our computer....computer also have sensors connected on board which requirs softwares in XP moreover the intelligent part is done by another software in linux....so what we need is to tranfer the data obtained by XP softwares to the linux i.e. virtual machine.

I have gone through the help and found that I can probably connect them via a virtual serial port but the problem is that we are doing this dynamically i.e. we have continuous flow of incoming data from sensors and simultaneous reading of these data in linux...

    Dear Experts,

I have a question, I have 3 hosts which are in HA cluster but no DRS is enabled. All 3 hosts have 3 machines virtual running on them. Now incase of host failure say host 1 how this will be decided which virtual machines to move on host 2 and which to host 3, who will make this decision ? Is it total manual interuption process ?

Also as I understood upon failure of a host in HA the virtual machines are re started on other hosts, does this involves vMotion ( in cold state ) OR there is no vMotion in this senario because moving a machine from one host to another should be a "vMotion" whether machine is shifted live OR restarted in both cases it is moved.

In HA cluster when there is a cluster it means all resources of hosts are assigned to the cluster. So now if a virtual machine is running on host 1 , from where it us consuming resources from cluster OR from host ? like memory and CPU and now if there is a load on host 1 but there is no DRS enabled the virtual machine will continue to run on host 1 OR it will be moved to another host ? If a virtual machine consumes resources from physical host where it resides that how the concept of resource pool works? This is really confusing I mean if host have 4GB memory but at a point virtual machine require 6GB memory and there is no DRS how it will get 6GB when physical host only have 4GB.

Waiting for responses, if any thing not clear please ask me.

The VM could be configured with 6 GB of vRAM even if the host only has 4, and it will be able to work due to the different VMware memory techniques (transparent page sharing, ballooning, compression and swapping). However, the VM will likely run slower if it really does need all those 6 GB which are not completly available in physical RAM.

The first error you are getting is because of the other alerts, you need to set interfaces on both hosts to Full duplex / 1000mbs. And it looks like the vmotion interfaces are not named the same, one is 'Shares' and the other is 'Shared'. Correct these and you should be good to go!

DB:3.01:Use Local Unc For Virtual Machines Under Windows 7 81

Personally, as for proxies this is more of a server and file protection rather than a limitation.
You wouldn't want those files altered, unless youwant toreceive a signature that is not digitally signed by Microsoft.

    MVP [2010]| Consumer Security
    Visit me @ Crimson Spectrum

Your response makes no sense. If the signatures are digitally signed (I don't know) then the proxy will have no effect. If the proxy is malicious and modifies files transferred through it that were digitally signed, then it would be detected. That is the entire
    point of "digitally signed."

Also, if there is a transparent proxy it will work with MSE. So I sure hope the signature updates implement digital signatures.

Well, you don't need a physical 1.44" floppy drive on your host. You could use a virtual one.

Ken Kato wrote a virtual floppy drive tool, although I don't know if it works in Vista.

Local to local your eaisest route would by by utilising vConverter. then deleting the original one. without shared storage you cannot migrate you can do local --gt; Shared. Shared -gt;gt; Shared, Shared --gt; Local but not local --gt; remote local, you can do Local to Local (same host) the reason for this is that the Hosts need to see the Storage they are migrating too. and local storage by its very nature is seen only by the host that is holding it.

Is it as easy as "Remove" from the original Virtual Center, and then "Add Host" on the new Virtual Center?

Any need to reboot the host machine?

DB:2.98:Moving A Host From One Instance Of Vc To Another 8p

It is as easy as that. Remove from one, add to the new Virtual Center. You will NOT need to reboot any ESX hosts.

Hello, I am new to VMware in a sense that I have never troubleshooted anything before - it usually just works.

I have been running a Windows XP machine on a VMServer for over a year now and has been great. All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago it stopped working. As in the console showing nothing ; CPU is low ; does not show any RAM usage ; not like a normal working guest where these levels show some kind of activity.

After some troubleshooting, ie reboot guest, reboot host, transfer to another host machine, etc, but still the same. I recently just converted it to an ESXi machine thinking it may help but still the same. Click the play button and the event details say it booted up but nothing in console. I can see the VMWare splash screen for about a second but Windows doesn't boot. The Event show a informational message saying:

"Your guest operating system is Windows XP and you have one or more virtual SCSI devices installed on yoru virtual machine. Please be aware that Windows XP does not support the BusLogic SCSI adapter that VMware ESX server curretnly uses for its virtual devices. If you have not done so already, you will need to install our driver in the virtual machine. You can download from our Web site at http://www.vmware.com/info?id=43. Click OK to continue or Cancel to abort"

    Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the virtual machine hasn't shutdown/suspended correctly, so when you try boot it up/restore it it gives those errors. Possibly try what I did which was simply delete the VM from the inventory and then added it back in. When it was added, it then showed the machine had shutdown correctly and so then i could start it again.

Total newbie, I hope this is the right place to post this.....

I want to create a virtual Windows machine (guest) to run in Linux (host). However, I have Workstation for Windows, not Linux. Can I create a Windows virtual machine in windows then "transfer" it to Linux and run it in Linux with Player?

    DB:2.97:Moving A Virtual Machine mx

    VMs are not 100% portable.

You have to adjust a few things in the VMX file (references to the CDROM and the like).

HiWe have got a Vmware ESX Cluster of 8 Hosts machines. When creating a Virtual Client in Networker, I must enter the physical machine host name.My problem is that the virtual machine may be moved from one physical host to another (Vmotion, DRS, HAS)so I can not really affect it to a specific host.Should I only declare my 8 hosts as Networker Clients, and no matter to which one I declare each virtual client?Or is this important that each virtual client does run on the physical host which was declared in virtual client configuration?

Is it by any means possible not to capture the key pressed on a virtual machine, but transfer it to host OS instead?

Nope. The guests are in effect independant from the host.

I have a Windows 7 pro as host PC, and I am using (with no problem) a Microsoft Virtual Machine 2007.
I want somehowtobe able to open my Virtual Machine to another (any) computer.
I want to transfer all my operating virtual PC (with it's files and programs)to a DVD or an external hard disc, and use it easily to another computer.
    Is this possible?

    Thank you..

DB:2.97:How Can I Use My Microsoft Virtual Pc To Another Computer? ad

Why not? Portability is a feature of virtual machines. You just need to install the virtualization software on the other comptuer and attach the external hard drive with your virtual machine files. You will need to adjust the networking
card in the Settings for the vm or you won't be able to get on the internet. The first time you do this you will need to double-click on the .vmc file to establish the location of the files for VPC 2007.

DB:2.97:Live Migration Trigger On Resource Crunch In Hyper-V 2012 Or R2 jp

SCVMM has a feature called Dynamic Optimization.

Dynamic Optimization can be configured on a host group, to migrate virtual machines within host clusters with a specified frequency and aggressiveness. Aggressiveness determines the amount of load imbalance that is required to initiate a migration during
Dynamic Optimization. By default, virtual machines are migrated every 10 minutes with medium aggressiveness. When configuring frequency and aggressiveness for Dynamic Optimization, an administrator should factor in the resource cost of additional migrations
against the advantages of balancing load among hosts in a host cluster. By default, a host group inherits Dynamic Optimization settings from its parent host group.
Dynamic Optimization can be set up for clusters with two or more nodes. If a host group contains stand-alone hosts or host clusters that do not support live migration, Dynamic Optimization is not performed on those hosts. Any hosts that are in maintenance
mode also are excluded from Dynamic Optimization. In addition, VMM only migrates highly available virtual machines that use shared storage. If a host cluster contains virtual machines that are not highly available, those virtual machines are not migrated during
    Dynamic Optimization.

DB:2.97:How To Access Host Machine's Harddrive From Virtual Machine At Boot Time 9s

    Hello,

I need to create a virtual machine from the ghost image of the hard drive of an old server.

The host OS is Windows 7 Ultimate.

When I start the virtual machine, I boot from Bart PE and run Norton Ghost,

but Ghost doen't see the host machine's harddrives where the ghost image is.

Using the same approach I was able to restore a ghost image on another virtual server also running Windows 7.

I used "Passthrough SCSI Device" to get access to host's machine harddrive.

Unfortunately, "Passthrough SCSI Device" is not available on my virtual server when I tried to add it as a new hardware.

    (it is grayed out)

How can I access the host machine harddrive from the virtual machine (at boot time)?

    Thank you for your help!

My host OS is Windows 7.

I'll try Bart PE with network support and see if that solves my problem!

DB:2.97:Vm Mysteriously Freezes Running Wintarget c8

    Hi,

When I install WinTarget (from stringbeansoftware.com) iSCSI target software in a virtual machine, it works as expected, until the following conditions are met:

\- I am using Microsoft iSCSI initiator on the host

\- I connect this initiator to the target running in the VM

\- I copy a large amount of data, about 700MB+ to the mounted iSCSI LUN

If I connect to the iSCSI from another VM or from another physical machine, this does not happen.

It appears that I get very fast transfer rate going from the host to the virtual machine (about 300 mbps), but suddenly and without warning, the virtual machine stops being responsive, eats 0% CPU, until the host side stops copying, saying the device stopped responding.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Thank you,

    Eric T.

DB:2.97:Vm Mysteriously Freezes Running Wintarget c8

Just for clarification, I've successfully run this software on hardware-installed OS over gigabit ethernet; and after the file transfer fails from lack of response, the VM starts running again at full speed, as if nothing happened, several seconds later.

It looks almost like something getting overloaded in the VMware Workstation software, that responds to the situation by freezing the virtual machine to 0% CPU utilization until circumstances change. It's really bizarre.

    Hi Guys,

I have managed to clone it to the same host and i found out it does not take the snapshot, it clone for me only the C D drive.

Hello can the xcopy or copy command be used to copy the virtual machine ( copy the folder ) from one hyper-v host to another ?

    DB:2.97:Scvmm Migrate Virtual Machine c9

SCVMM will be your best option for virtual machine migrations, copies, and templates. If you happen to have a VHD without snapshots, you can take the VHD and create a new virtual machine manually, adding the VHD as the hard disk for the virtual machine. This is always an available backup option, so you should make sure your VM configurations are manually documented somewhere.Nathan Lasnoski
