Why are you running ComboFix? It should *only* be used for specific malware infections and then, typically, under the guiidance of someone who knows how to use it.
If your PC is infeced by malware that MSE missed:
    Start here -https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/
and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected - and then select the support option for phone (or email if phone is not offered for your region)

Updates for MSE are available multiple times per day. MSE checks once per 24 hours and installs them. If you visit Windows Update manually and check for updates, the odds are good that you will see an update for MSE offered as Optional. You can choose to optionally
install that update or let MSE update itself when it next checks.

DB:2.95:Error Code 80040609 Fails To Install Update Definitions kz

Ignore Windows Update History. I think that the error means "not needed" or similar. AU may have listed the updates as available before MSE pulled updates and then when AU did the install (based on your selection for AU check and install) it found that MSE
didn't need these updates after all.
Open MSE. Is it reporting being up to date and showing a creation date for updates within the last 24 hours? If so, all is good. Windows update delivery of MSE updates is optional. MSE checks for updates on its own, but uses the same source as WU to get

    Hi Kenneth,

I'm assuming you mean definition updates and not the MSE product

It would help to know the error code that probably came with that error message - we could probably be more specific about a solution. If none of this works, please include the entire and exact error message word-for-word in your next reply.

How can I temporarily turn off Secutity Essentials for trouble shooting purposes?

    DB:2.84:Security Essentials mz

Hi Peter – Welcome to Microsoft Answers Community.
How do I: Turn off Microsoft® Security Essentials?
    1. Double-click the Microsoft® Security Essentials icon.
    2. Navigate to the Settings tab.

Easy tab navigation in Microsoft® Security Essentials.

    3. From the left side panel, select Real-time protection.

Good settings category. Easy to select and
filter settings, in this case I wanted to focus on
    the real-time protection settings.

    4. From the right-side uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended)
    and click Save changes.

Security note: If UAC is enabled, then you’ll get a UAC prompt on screen.
    Please specify
credentials or permission to pass the UAC elevation.

Just uncheck the Turn on real-time protection (recommended) checkbox and click Save

settings, very easy to turn off.

After clicking Save settings and passing a UAC prompt elevation, the MSE tray
icon will become red, and the entire software interface will change warning that

real-time it turned off (See image below).

I'm wondering why Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't update itself in real time as the updates become available? I would say that 99% of the time I turn on my computer there is an update available as optional update of course cause Windows Update never
    notifies me of optional updates.
    jim

DB:2.71:Why Do Microsoft Security Essentials Updates Show As Optional Updates And Not Recommended Updates When It Does This I Always Have To Check For Updates c8

MSE updates shows as optional because that is how it was designed. There is no ned to do this however, read on.
MSE updates itself about every 24 hours. If the PC is left off, it will check again at re-boot.
If you wish to get the latest update before the 24 hour period, open MSE, click the update tab and click update.
This is from Mr. Boots from anopther post:
By design, MSE isn't only signature based detection. If it detects activity that is potentially malicious, it communicates to the server to see if a match exists in the cloud. If so, it immediately downloads the newest mitigation instructions.

The check for updates within MSE is purposely not configurable. Getting updated signatures once per 24 hours is good. Remember, also, that MSE will only complain after the signatures are 7 days old.

If you are already practicing safe computing, you don't need more frequent updates as the zero day threats or morphing threats aren't going to be addressed within hours of the threat appearing in the wild anyway.

Of course, that's my opinion. :-)
    I hope this helps.

DB:2.71:This Microsft Security Essentials Does It Protect Both Hardware And Software When Its Scanning ad

This microsft security essentials, does it protect both hardware and software when its scanning?

DB:2.71:This Microsft Security Essentials Does It Protect Both Hardware And Software When Its Scanning ad

    Hi Joshua,

With a Full Scan, MSE will also scan the hardware drivers and hardware-related software products - so it does help keep the hardware devicesrunning properly. I'm not quite sure how the hardware itself (other than the software installed on it) could become
infected. If it's possible, I've never seen anything like that happen.

Some malware can harmsome hardware devices to the point of needing replacement (potentially causing irreparable corruption in the hard drive for example), but that's a consequence of the malware andif you want toconsider that in whether MSE is protecting
the hardware, then I suppose if MSE blocks an infection capable of doing that (and AFAIK, there's no limitation that excludes infections that cause that kind of harm),then it has protected your hard drive and thus one could theoretically say it helps provide
    hardware protection in that way.

I guess the only exception (maybe) I can think of is a BIOS infection (since it's debatable whether or not that's really software even though I wouldn't call it hardware either) - and MSE does not protect against that (but while I've heard about such infections,
in over 25 yearsI've never actually seen one - or if it was and infection causing a BIOS-related problem, then upgrading or re-installing the BIOS always resolved the problem so I never really knew).

Do you have a hardware device causing you troubles that you can't diagnose and are wondering if malware could be the cause? What device? What type of problem? Have you updated all related drivers, firmware, and software for that hardware device? In essence,
what's the REAL question behind the question you asked? Maybe we can help if we understand it better.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

Is this a new installation? If not, when did this problem begin?
    Does Windows Update work?
The problem may also be due to undetected malware.

To expand on ahaap's reply, you cannot change the behavior of MSE to alert you of found threats.
You need to determine *why* you are continually/regularly encountering threats for MSE to find. I can't remember the last time MSE alerted me to the presence of a threat during my regular use of multiple computers...
Make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled.
Make sure that all important/critical updates, including service packs for the operating system and programs are installed from Microsoft Update (Windows Update).
Make sure Internet Explorer is at version 8 or 9 and updated with all patches.
In Internet Explorer, use the SmartScreen Filter.
Make sure that IE Internet Security settings are at least set to medium-high (default).
Enable the pop-up blocker in IE.
On Vista and Windows 7 make sure that User Account Control (UAC) ON

Make sure that Windows Automatic Updates are set to at least notify, but the preferred setting is to download and install automatically. If you update manually, be sure to update as soon as possible after being notified of available updates.
Make sure that installed applications, especially Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash, and Java are at their latest versions. Many vendors are regularly updating and patching for security holes.

DB:2.66:Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update Being Listed As Optional Under Importance? p9

Why is Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update being listed as Optional under the Automatic Windows Update?
Youactually have to choose it to be downloaded (since it is listed as optional), instead of MSE/Windows automatically downloading the definition.
If you do not manually select it to be downloaded, Windows will not automatically download the MSE definition.
Isn't it odd that a security definition update for MSE be listed as Optional in terms of importance? This happens in both Windows 7 and Windows Vista OS.

    Any reasons or answers?

DB:2.66:Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update Being Listed As Optional Under Importance? p9

Im in the same boat. My concern is that there seems to be a daily update. Is MSE becoming obsolete? Am I to believe that it is time to go out and get a different product? I have had good peace of mind that with MSE and my knowledge
of pitfalls to avoid that this is a good product. Now, with the continuing updates, which arent automatic, that I need to do something different. Im currently in CIT in college and I have not heard about any massive virus outbreaks that would require
such daily definition updates. Just confused! :-(

Thanks for any info you can provide : )

    Jon

DB:2.63:Security Essentials For Windows Mobile jz

You should develop a antivirus for wp8
AV isn't required for Windows Phone 8, since it's security model is entirely different and far more inherently secure than the Windows used on desktop/laptop or even most tablet devices.

See the following Microsoft documentfor an overview ofthe various techniques used to protect Windows Phone 8.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=36173

In general, the methods typically used to attack a normal Windows 8 computer simply aren't available on a Windows Phone 8 device, since all of the code and application support provided are entirely different, so no malware from regular Windows 8 will work.

Since as the document indicates, many of the design issues that allowed malware to exist and operate on the desktop versions of Windows don't exist or include other mitigations, there's very little chance of a successful attack in the first place and even
if this occurred, the other mitigations would limit its access.

So the point is that there simply isn't a need for AV to protect Windows Phone 8 itself, so this would simply be overhead to detect malware that operates on other devices such as the desktop, so this protection is really up to those other devices to provide
    for themselves.

Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.143.1030.0)

    DB:2.62:Mirosoft Security Essentials zc

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forums.

It looks like the KB2310138 is reoffered to install even if it is installed on the computer.

    Help me with more information.

    1. Is that the only update you're having trouble with - including any Windows updates?
    2. How have you tried to install it - through MSE or through Windows Update (or both)?

Go back through your update history and see if it EVER installed successfully - perhaps once the first time and then all the others failed because it was already there.

As long as MSE is auto-updating itself roughly once-a-day (and you can successfully update MSE Definitions manually via the Update button on the Update tab), don't worry about Optional Definitions updates offered via Microsoft Update.

I would suggest you to try this step and check if it helps. You can also hide the update if it is installed successfully.

    Reset Windows update components.
How do I reset Windows Update components?

When I go to the windows update website, the definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials are not listed ashigh priority, but are listed as software, optional. Should they not be listed as high priority instead of software, optional??? Since
they are listed as an optional update, automatic updates will not install the updates automatically.

Yes, that would be normal since the updates are actually being pulled through WU by MSE itself. The fact that they appear on WU when they haven't yet been installed is bonus.
