    Bug in the taskbar

I have 2 screens connected to my pc in extended mode, where the first (left) screen is the main display. I have my taskbar set to always be visible in taskbar properties. I'm using windows 8.1.

I found that on my second screen, when clicking the start button in the bottom left corner from the metro menu (returning to the desktop) and then move your mouse off the taskbar, the taskbar slides down from sight and reappears again half a second after
    the slide animation ends.

This doesn't seem like normal behaviour to me. When using my first screen, this weird behaviour doesn't occur.

It seems as if the taskbar animation of opening the metro screen is shown in stead of closing the metro screen.

    Please help :)

Options to pin to taskbar and start menu are missing for both .lnk and .exe files.

    What I've already tried:
    1) I tried right-clicking on the .exe file but the "pin to ..." options are not there.
    2) I tried clicking and dragging the icons from windows explorer. I can drag the icons to the start menu but not to the taskbar. When I try to drag icons to the taskbar I get a red x.
    3) I tried opening various programs and right-clicking the icon on the taskbar. I get an option to pin to the taskbar but when I select it nothing happens. The icon leaves the taskbar when I close.
    4) I opened regedit.exe and found
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile. The IsShortcut value is not missing.
    5) I tried using methods involving APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations and
gpedit.msc. I could find neither when searching programs and files.

    Notes:
    1) Right-clicking an icon in either the start menu or windows explorer does not give the "pin to ..." options
    2) Not all programs are effected. All Microsoft Office programs have the pin option. However, many other programs and accessories, such as Calculator and Snipping Tool, do not.
    3) Around half the programs installed on my computer do not have the pin option nor can you drag them to the taskbar.
    4) Several program icons are currently displayed in the taskbar without issue.

Check to make sure that your screen resolution isn't too big for your monitor (right-click on your desktop, then go to the settings tab, then look for the slider. Change it to something smaller).

If that's not the problem, you might have dragged the taskbar down below the bottom of your screen. Try hitting the windows button on your keyboard to see if the start menu pops up anywhere. Or move your mouse down to the very bottom of your screen and see if it changes to a resize icon.

    Hi,

    - Have you made any changes on your computer prior to the issue?

    Perform the following troubleshooting methods:
    Method 1:

Perform System File Check to fix the corrupted system files and then check how it works.
Refer to the link "How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista

Note: It may ask for Windows DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

    Method 2:

If that doesn’t fix the issue, then perform System Restore to the previous point when it was working fine.
Refer to the link “System Restore Win 7” to know how to
    perform System Restore.

Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and see if the taskbar pops up. If not, try the same thing on the top, left, and right of the screen.

Or, the taskbar might be too small to see. Again, move the mouse to each edge of the screen. If the cursor changes to a two-headed arrow, click and hold the left button and drag the cursor to make the taskbar bigger.

I tried a right mouse ... Personalize... and selected TASKBAR and START MENU to move the taskbar to the left side, but the taskbar is missing. Also now when I do a right mouse on the desktop... then select Personalize... then select TASKBAR and START MENU...
the task bar dialog does not appear.

DB:3.72:Missing Taskbar, Desktop, And Start Menu ac

If you don't have either disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using

    http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/along with burning software like:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.htmland, of course, a blank CD.

If that doesn't work, try to boot into safe mode (repeatedly click the F8 key while booting and go to safe mode with networking) - or you can use Command Prompt from the disk.. Then let's check some of your system files:

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator (skip this step if going from the disk).

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s)
    using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228.

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a cause.
If that doesn't work, then please post any repeating error messages from the Event Viewer concerning startup (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html.

If that doesn't work, we'll need to do a system repair/upgrade using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (one you own or one you can borrow from ANYONE - I know you don't have one but this is the last option before a clean installand it seems
you might even have trouble with that). Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.htmlalong
with the upgrade from an earlier version of Windows section of the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918884. Although this will not affect your data, settings, or programs, you should still backup your data before starting just to be on
the safe side. If the other procedures don't work, THIS one is almost certain to work. You may have a lot of updates to re-install (including any service packs you had to remove). If the version on the system cane with SP1 or SP2 pre-installed and the disk
is an earlier version, then you'll need to make a slipstream disk as follows:
    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html.

Hopefully one of these procedures will resolve your problem. If not, post back and we'll try something else. Post back in any case so we'll know how it turned out.

    Good luck!

ok...I think its a virus..but i can't get into search to locate it. When I log onto Windows my wallpaper comes up and thats it. I start the task manager and type explorer but it says explorer is not found. I ran a virus scan and nothing came up. Start
menu is gone...how can i search for a program when I have no icons or my start menu? And why isn't explorer found? Help!

DB:3.70:Taskbar Is Gone And All Desktop Icons Are Gone cp

    Hi,
It could be a virus, or it could be something interfering with the explorer shell.
If you hit ctrl+shift+escape, does task manager open? If so, on the applications tab click 'new process' and then type explorer.exe and click ok. Does this start the desktop?
If Task Manager doesn't open, then you are probably infected (viruses frequently block access to task manager). Restart in Safe mode by hitting F8 when the system initially starts up, just after the initial POST and before Windows begins to load. This should
result in a boot menu where you can choose safe mode. Run your antivirus scans from here.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting the question on Microsoft Community Forums.

It looks like you are unableto launch start menu and cannot open taskbar or any programs.

    1. Are you aware of making any changes to the computer prior to the issue?
    2. Do you suspect any kind of infection on the computer?
    3. Do you get any error messages?

Let's analyze and identify the cause of the issue.

    Method 1:

Step 1: Boot the computer in safe mode with networking and check for the issue.

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

    Step 2:Clean boot

Place thecomputer in clean boot and check for the issue.
How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Once you are done with clean boot, please follow the section ‘How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot’ under ‘more information’ in the article to put
your computer back to normal startup.

    Method 2:

    You may SFC Scan
to check to check if any system files have been missing or corrupted which leads to failure of programs and applications.

    Follow the steps:

    a. Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.
    b. Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.
    c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.
    d. Type ‘sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit Enter.

Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when
    fixing corrupted files.

    Method 3:

Run a virus scan on your computer.

    Hi Gamersunited,

Since we are not sure as what has caused this issue and changed the settings, I would suggest you toperform a system restore to the date when it was working fine and check if it helps.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

A.Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
B.In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
C.In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
    D.Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

Access the link below to know about system restore:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-System-Restore

If you are unable to restore the computer to an earlier date in normal mode, you may try to perform a system restore from safe mode and check if it restores successfully. To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping F8 key during restart. Once
you see the option to boot in safe modeselect it and press enter.

DB:3.55:My Start Menu Is Missing xs

You probably solved this long ago, but I was disappointed when this happened to me today and found the exact question I had, but no solutions. I have an extra monitor with the desktop extended to it. The laptop monitor is (supposed to be) the primary, so
my desktop icons, Start button, shortcut menu, etc. all display on the laptop monitor. This morning when I logged in, the desktop display was fine on the laptop, except all the Start-shortcut-clock bars at the bottom were missing. I turned on the extra monitor,
and they had migrated over there; the only thing I can think of that may have triggered this is I unplugged the monitor to use it on another laptop yesterday. Setting up the displays againas primary and secondary solved the problem.
BTW, this is also sometimes caused by the taskbar being set too small, apparently, and more seriously, a problem with the registry. I found info on these at ask-leo.com.

How do you diable the taskbar including the start menu and everything else? Right now it is on auto-hide but whenever I accidently put my mouse on the bottom of the screen it pops up. I don't want to use it because I use RocketDock. The start Menu and
taskbar just get in the way. Does anyone know how to permanently disable the taskbar? HELP!

    DB:3.54:Disabling The Taskbar cz

    Hi Jack Hermanson,
There is no option to permanently disable the Taskbar on the computer, the only option is to auto hide the taskbar.
However you may check the settings of Rocketdock if they have an option to disable the taskbar

    Hello Alicat11,
Yes, please attempt to create an alternate user account and verify if you are still experiencing this issue.

-Create an alternate user account (Local Admin)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/Create-a-user-account. Verify if you are still experiencing this issue.

I created an alternate user account and that account is able to use the pin to taskbar function, etc. correctly.

So, how do I restore that pin to taskbar, et al., for the main user account that is experiencing the problem? There are some programs installed for the main user account that wouldn't just transfer over to the alternate user account were I to copy everything
to the alt. account (to say nothing of the drive space that would take).

I've scanned for viruses/malware with McAfee and EmsiSoft Anti-Malware; both came up clean. I've checked the registry for the pin to taskbar key fix but it is present; shortcut arrows are displayed on the main account experiencing this problem.

I'm trying the sfc /scannow option and hopefully that will turn up something. Let me know if there is another way to restore the correct settings to the main user account (main and alternate accounts on this PC are both administrator accounts, Win7 Home
    Premium, x64).

I have a rebuilt PC with Windows XP home edition, Service Pack 3. I use Avast virus protection. I completed a full system scan w/Avast and once done, it prompted me to restart and scan at start up. I completed that and now nothing works. I have no
taskbar, no start menu, nothing. I have tried to hit ctrl/alt/del in the desktop to bring up the task manager, which it does, but will not 'open' anything. I have rebooted to no avail. I cannot do a system restore as I cannot get to my control panel. I
would rather avoid doing a reinstall if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to fix this? As of now, my computer is just a large bulky picture frame...

DB:3.52:Desktop Is Unavailable, No Start Menu, No Taskbar x8

If it isn‘t started, start Explorer via Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc then on the Applications Tab click ‘New Task’ at the bottom, type explorer.exe and press Enter. If it doesn’t start, you are almost certainly
infected and need to remove the infection, with something like the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Now check this registry key by opening a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. In the right pane, make sure there is a REG_SZ
named Shell and it has a value of "explorer.exe" (no quotation marks). If it’s not there, create it by clicking Edit New String Value then right-click it and type explorer.exe then restart the computer.

If I go on to change the icon myself, it tells that application path not found (even though clicking on the icon works fine). The path the link stores has %Program Files% stuff which it is unable to resolve to \Program Files (x86).

Is it happen to every shortcut or maybe only to the one?? If only to the one navigate in Windows Explorer to the application folder create a new shortcut from the .exe file replace with the new shortcut the old one.

About the IconCache.db.... this file is unique for every single user. It's not shared. I'm wondering is it possible to replace them with another. Just login to the account which is working correctly copy the IconCache.db for example to the C:\ login to
the old account replace the IconCache.db with that one which was copied to the C:\

Another thing which you can try is to:
Fix a corrupted user profile .

About that %Program Files% , is it mentioned inside a path in the shortcut properties? Are you sure about that " " (space) between Program and Files? One more note: You have Windows 7 x64... so if the application was installed under Program
Files (x86), and it's using System Path Variables it should have %PROGRAMFILES(X86)% not a
    %PROGRAMFILES%

Do you have a Dell computer? This is not a task bar, and not even a
Windows feature. Its something that Dell wrote and installed on
computers they sell. It's called the Dell Dock.
Click on the Start orb, then on All Programs, and go to the Dell list

    Hi NiravGoswami,

    1. Have you made any recent changes on the computer?
    2. Are you able to pin all other programs to the start menu?

    Method 1
I would suggest that you run SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer
    and replace them.
The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If information from the installation CD is needed to repair the problem, you may be prompted to insert your

Right click Start menu and choose Open All Users and repeat and choose
    Open.

Thanks, that was really helpful. I'm new to Vista.

So it's impossible to have Store apps on the Taskbar, but still land in the Start Menu?

    ... Why?

    Split from older thread

DB:3.40:Store Apps On Taskbar Return To Start Screen 7d

    Hi Greg

The changes made in the new 8.1 Updateare mainly focused on mouse/keyboard users instead of touch users. Up to this point Windows 8x was optimized for touch devices.

According to the feedback from these users, the vast majority wanted to always remain on the traditional Desktop and avoidseeing the Start Screen.

These new options enable that capability for these users.

    Regards

DB:3.40:Missing Right-Click Menu On Taskbar xk

Hi. I was clicking around on the right-click menu on the taskbar and managed to accidentally make the right-click menu disappear. I'm wondering how to get it back. I tried right-clicking on the Start button to get to the taskbar properties, but it doesn't
contain an option for this. I'm running Windows 7 SP1. After searching the Microsoft knowledge base, it seems there is a way to do this for an older version of the OS but the instructions are not applicable to Windows 7 (I tried). FYI, my taskbar is visible
and locked, so there is no problem with that. Naturally, without the menu, I can't auto-hide, unlock, or move the taskbar, not that I care.

It was the right-click menu on the taskbar. Not sure what a jump list is. The problem went away when I rebooted.

My sound icon and battery icon are missing from the taskbar. But I am unable to recheck them on the notification area in the taskbar and start menu properties window. They are grayed out so I am unable to check them.

The following tutorial will fix the problem. Use Method Three.... it's a lot easier and fool-proofed.

Somehow the taskbar and start menu moved to right hand edge of screen. How do I get the taskbar back to the bottom and the start menu back ti the left side?

That's the only way I know of, but I would suggest asking the experts in the Repair Recovery forum.

Original Title: Disappearing Start Menu and Taskbar.
I've been using Vista since it's inception. This week, whenever I've clicked on a shortcut, e.g. mailonline .co.uk, the star menu and taskbar disappear. I must close the opened page in order to recover them
