EtbinYou are updating the filter column so an index is unkiley to help - if thread_title is indexed it will probably hurt performance. If there are any indexes on the thread title columns consider disabling and dropping them and fixing after the update has been accomplished.

Apart from special conditions - parititioned or other specialized data structures - a full table scan is probably what you need to do. If you have the licence the parallel query option might speed things up if you can get parallel DML to work provided that you are updating a large number of rows

long lists can not be produced with a SELECT SINGLE, there is also nothing to group.

But I guess the SINGLE is a bug

    SELECT MAX( policyterm ) startterm

    Hi All,

I have a request from User to improve the Query performance for few of the sales reports. Please let me know the different steps I need to perform to improve it.

The data is coming from R/3 and the query is on a Multicube modeled upon three Cubes.

It takes way lot of time to open and refresh the report an further execute. The data available is not really huge but still it is taking time.

Tell me what are the areas that i need to check to understand the issue and how should o progress to improve the performance.

It would be great help if you can help me with as much details as possible.

    Thanks in advance

DB:4.03:Steps To Improve Query Performance as

    Hi Pavan,

To enhance the performance from your query ..

Beside you can try from our friend posting, i suggest you like this.

You can create aggregate for your cubes or index for your ODS. I believe if you do it, it can increase a lot for the performance.

Aggregate, you create the little cube, so that whenever your user access the report, user can access to that little cube, so that it can save a lot of time.

p/s feel free to ask, if you have doubt regarding this.

    Regards,

    Niel

    Hi Experts,

How can we improve the performance of the select with out creating an secondary index?

In my select query am not using primary fields in where condation.

so i want to know that how can we improve the performance .

one more thing is that if we r creating secondary index what are the disadvantages of that?

    Thanks Regards,

    Amit.

    DB:3.73:Improving Performance c3

If you select from a table without using an appropriate index or key, then the database will perform a table scan to get the required data. If you accept that this will be slow but must be used, then the key to improving performance of the program is to minimise the number of times it does the scan of the table.

Often the way to do this is not what would normally be counted as good programming.

For example, if you SELECT inside a loop or SELECT using FOR ALL ENTRIES, the system can end up doing the table scan a lot of times because the SQL is broken up into lots of individual/small selects passed to the database one after the other. So it may be quicker to SELECT from the table into an internal table without specifying any WHERE conditions, and then delete the rows from the internal table that are not wanted. This way you do only a single table scan on the database to get all records. Of course, this uses a lot of memory - which is often the trade off. If you have a partial key and are then selecting based on non idexed fields, you can get all records matching the partial key and then throw away those where the remaining fields dont meet requirements.

    Hi,
The answer to your question is a well planned constructive application right from the item level to the server level.
Performance of Sharepoint 2010 or any application depends on how is your taxonomy.

What is the level of customization.
How effectively can the OOB cache be used in your application.
If you have already built your application and its performance is slow you might have to look at the Caching strategy.
If you are building your application now, plan your taxonomy. Try to use Content types, Site columns, Metadata service, Views at the initial level. My answer can be specific too your question.

You might wanna post some example that showing no performance increase with or without index.

Depends on how many data in your table and how the queries are written, index may or may not help to improve query performance. We need to see some example to be sure.

    DB:3.66:Re: Effect Of Index fa

Creating index some scinarios will benefits, and some scinarios not.
You need to test your queries and choose the right index or no index.
Remeber, FTS are always not bad and INDEX SCAN are not always good theory.

Need to tune your query on response time forumal:

response time = wait time + service time and try to reduce logical reads of the query.

    DB:3.65:Performance Tuning z8

how can we check the performance of our report?how to improve the performance of our program?

    DB:3.65:Performance Tuning z8

Hi tanuj, this might helpABAP provides few tools to analyse the perfomance of the objects, which was developed by us.Run time analysis transaction SE30This transaction gives all the analysis of an ABAP program with respect to the database and the non-database processing.SQL Trace transaction ST05by using this tool we can analyse the perfomance issues related to DATABASE calls.Perfomance Techniques for improve the perfomance of the object.1) ABAP/4 programs can take a very long time to execute, and can make other processes have to wait before executing. Here are some tips to speed up your programs and reduce the load your programs put on the system:2) Use the GET RUN TIME command to help evaluate performance. It's hard to know whether that optimization technique REALLY helps unless you test it out.3) Using this tool can help you know what is effective, under what kinds of conditions. The GET RUN TIME has problems under multiple CPUs, so you should use it to test small pieces of your program, rather than the whole program.4) Generally, try to reduce I/O first, then memory, then CPU activity. I/O operations that read/write to hard disk are always the most expensive operations. Memory, if not controlled, may have to be written to swap space on the hard disk, which therefore increases your I/O read/writes to disk. CPU activity can be reduced by careful program design, and by using commands such as SUM (SQL) and COLLECT (ABAP/4).5) Avoid 'SELECT *', especially in tables that have a lot of fields. Use SELECT A B C INTO instead, so that fields are only read if they are used. This can make a very big difference.6) Field-groups can be useful for multi-level sorting and displaying. However, they write their data to the system's paging space, rather than to memory (internal tables use memory). For this reason, field-groups are only appropriate for processing large lists (e.g. over 50,000 records). If you have large lists, you should work with the systems administrator to decide the maximum amount of RAM your program should use, and from that, calculate how much space your lists will use. Then you can decide whether to write the data to memory or swap space.Use as many table keys as possible in the WHERE part of your select statements.7)Whenever possible, design the program to access a relatively constant number of records (for instance, if you only access the transactions for one month, then there probably will be a reasonable range, like 1200-1800, for the number of transactions inputted within that month). Then use a SELECT A B C INTO TABLE ITAB statement.8) Get a good idea of how many records you will be accessing. Log into your productive system, and use SE80 - Dictionary Objects (press Edit), enter the table name you want to see, and press Display. Go To Utilities - Table Contents to query the table contents and see the number of records. This is extremely useful in optimizing a program's memory allocation.9) Try to make the user interface such that the program gradually unfolds more information to the user, rather than giving a huge list of information all at once to the user.10) Declare your internal tables using OCCURS NUM_RECS, where NUM_RECS is the number of records you expect to be accessing. If the number of records exceeds NUM_RECS, the data will be kept in swap space (not memory).11) Use SELECT A B C INTO TABLE ITAB whenever possible. This will read all of the records into the itab in one operation, rather than repeated operations that result from a SELECT A B C INTO ITAB... ENDSELECT statement. Make sure that ITAB is declared with OCCURS NUM_RECS, where NUM_RECS is the number of records you expect to access.12) If the number of records you are reading is constantly growing, you may be able to break it into chunks of relatively constant size. For instance, if you have to read all records from 1991 to present, you can break it into quarters, and read all records one quarter at a time. This will reduce I/O operations. Test extensively with GET RUN TIME when using this method.13) Know how to use the 'collect' command. It can be very efficient.14) Use the SELECT SINGLE command whenever possible.15) Many tables contain totals fields (such as monthly expense totals). Use these avoid wasting resources by calculating a total that has already been calculated and stored. Some tips:1) Use joins where possible as redundant data is not fetched.2) Use select single where ever possible.3) Calling methods of a global class is faster than calling function modules.4) Use constants instead of literals5) Use WHILE instead of a DO-EXIT-ENDDO.6) Unnecessary MOVEs should be avoided by using the explicit work area operationssee the follwing links for a brief insifght into performance tuning,http://www.thespot4sap.com/Articles/SAPABAPPerformanceTuning_Introduction.asp1. DB:3.65:Multiprovider Issue 1z

    Hi Varam,

Chintu here... When ever we talk abt the Query performance the we need to check,

    1. Whether database parameters are set properly or not

    2.Degenerate Indexes

    3.Check out with Partitioning

4.Check the read mode of the queries

    5. If you are generating the queries based on only 3 cubes then restrict the cubes in the Query designer.

6.Try to run the Queries based on Pre Calc Value sets and Pre Calc Web Templates.

Please check all these parameters and let me know whether your problem got solved or not..

    Assign Points if it helps..

The properties you can do based on the volume of the data it delivers in your report.

If it has huge volume then you need to use the 3 rd option and then BLOB mode else select Cluster mode.

Yes you can do it for one time.

    Hi,

Did You face this problem always or problem happened not long ago?

In first case You need to get ADDM, AWR reports and analyze Your system.
In second the problem may be related to the some locking or some session with huge activities.

Use the views v$session_wait, v$session_event, v$sesstat+v$statname, dba_blockers for start investigation.

    DB:3.62:Performance Tuning xc

In order to tune the performance, there must be some kind of performance problem, right?

So what is the problem? Have you identified it?

Performance tuning is a means to solve a problem. Without knowing what The Problem is, how do you expect to solve it by tuning?

What you are looking for, by the sounds of your question, is a recipe of steps from 1 to 12 (or however many) to take to tune a query. That does not exist.

It is a naive and very flawed view of what performance tuning is.

Start with [url http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14211/toc.htm]Oracle Database Performance Tuning Guide.

PS. .. and to quote from this manual, "Tuning is driven by identifying the most significant bottleneck and making the appropriate changes to reduce or eliminate the effect of that bottleneck."

Absolutley - reviewing Explain plans does provide a lot of insight into what is going on with a query.

Not sure that it's a reasonable expectation that many query developers are going to be able to do do much with one without some RDBMS background.

There isn't a whole lot one can do to influence the SQL that is generated AND still get the result set that is desired given the BW query tools. (I'd love to be able to specify an Oracle Hint for some queries!)

The main challenge I encounter when trying to optimize queries is the fact that most of our queries have many optional input variables and free characteristics. This is doen to provide the users with a large degreee of freedom to get what they want and drill on what they want. Consequently, although 20 people use the same BEx query, 20 different queries get built that can behave differntly.

So what do you do - as PR says, use some good old fashioned approaches to tuning:

Look at the queries that run frequently first. It's the old 80/20 rule, but really more like 90/10 or 95/5. If you can improve performance on the top 5 or 10 of resource consuming queries you typically make a big improvement to the entire system.

Look at common/typical usage of the query, not any one execution of a query. If 90 out of 100 queries against an ODS specify a particular cost center, you add an index on cost center, and don't worry about the other 10 flavors of query that run against the ODS.

DB:3.51:Performance Issue In Abap Program 3p

    hi,

how can we improve the performance of abap program

DB:3.51:Performance Issue In Abap Program 3p

    hi,

    read the follwing links

ABAP provides few tools to analyse the perfomance of the objects, which was developed by us.

    Run time analysis transaction SE30

This transaction gives all the analysis of an ABAP program with respect to the database and the non-database processing.

    SQL Trace transaction ST05

by using this tool we can analyse the perfomance issues related to DATABASE calls.

Perfomance Techniques for improve the perfomance of the object.

    1) ABAP/4 programs can take a very long time to execute, and can make other processes have to wait before executing. Here are some tips to speed up your programs and reduce the load your programs put on the system:

    2) Use the GET RUN TIME command to help evaluate performance. It's hard to know whether that optimization technique REALLY helps unless you test it out.

    3) Using this tool can help you know what is effective, under what kinds of conditions. The GET RUN TIME has problems under multiple CPUs, so you should use it to test small pieces of your program, rather than the whole program.

    4) Generally, try to reduce I/O first, then memory, then CPU activity. I/O operations that read/write to hard disk are always the most expensive operations. Memory, if not controlled, may have to be written to swap space on the hard disk, which therefore increases your I/O read/writes to disk. CPU activity can be reduced by careful program design, and by using commands such as SUM (SQL) and COLLECT (ABAP/4).

    5) Avoid 'SELECT *', especially in tables that have a lot of fields. Use SELECT A B C INTO instead, so that fields are only read if they are used. This can make a very big difference.

    6) Field-groups can be useful for multi-level sorting and displaying. Then you can decide whether to write the data to memory or swap space.

Use as many table keys as possible in the WHERE part of your select statements.

7)Whenever possible, design the program to access a relatively constant number of records (for instance, if you only access the transactions for one month, then there probably will be a reasonable range, like 1200-1800, for the number of transactions inputted within that month). Then use a SELECT A B C INTO TABLE ITAB statement.

    8) Get a good idea of how many records you will be accessing. Log into your productive system, and use SE80 - Dictionary Objects (press Edit), enter the table name you want to see, and press Display. Go To Utilities - Table Contents to query the table contents and see the number of records. This is extremely useful in optimizing a program's memory allocation.

    9) Try to make the user interface such that the program gradually unfolds more information to the user, rather than giving a huge list of information all at once to the user.

    10) Declare your internal tables using OCCURS NUM_RECS, where NUM_RECS is the number of records you expect to be accessing. If the number of records exceeds NUM_RECS, the data will be kept in swap space (not memory).

    11) Use SELECT A B C INTO TABLE ITAB whenever possible. This will read all of the records into the itab in one operation, rather than repeated operations that result from a SELECT A B C INTO ITAB... ENDSELECT statement. Make sure that ITAB is declared with OCCURS NUM_RECS, where NUM_RECS is the number of records you expect to access.

    12) If the number of records you are reading is constantly growing, you may be able to break it into chunks of relatively constant size. For instance, if you have to read all records from 1991 to present, you can break it into quarters, and read all records one quarter at a time. This will reduce I/O operations. Test extensively with GET RUN TIME when using this method.

    13) Know how to use the 'collect' command. It can be very efficient.

    14) Use the SELECT SINGLE command whenever possible.

    15) Many tables contain totals fields (such as monthly expense totals). Use these avoid wasting resources by calculating a total that has already been calculated and stored.

    Some tips:

    1) Use joins where possible as redundant data is not fetched.

    2) Use select single where ever possible.

    3) Calling methods of a global class is faster than calling function modules.

    4) Use constants instead of literals

    5) Use WHILE instead of a DO-EXIT-ENDDO.

    6) Unnecessary MOVEs should be avoided by using the explicit work area operations

see the follwing links for a brief insifght into performance tuning,

    Hi,

for all loads: improve your ABAP code in routines.

    for master data load:

    - load master data attributes before the charateristic itself

    - switch number range buffering on for initial loads

    for transactional loads:

    - load all your master data IObjs prior loading your cube / ODS

    - depending on the ratio No.Records loaded / No.Records in Cube F fact table, drop / recreate indexes (if ration is mor than 40/50%

    - switch on number range buffering for dimensions with high number of records for initial loads

    - switch on number range buffering on master data IObjs which aren't loaded via master data (SIDs always created while transactional loads; eg document, item....)

these recommendations are just some among others like system tuning, DB parameters...

    hope this helps...

DB:3.50:How Can I Improve The Performance Of My Report kx

    Hi SADA M,

Could you please elaborate on the report and filters more detail?

Report takes a long time to process it's probably that there is something wrong with the query. You can try catching the query with SQL profiler. The way you can do is to copy and paste the query to Management studio and trace the execution plan. This
could show some insight in why the report (query) takes so long to process.

To diagnose and troubleshoot Microsoft SQL Server Performance issues, you can use Microsoft Professional Advisory Services which is a support option to determine that things are slow and find any way to resolve the performance issue and so on. For more information:

DB:3.50:Improving Query Performance On Reporting Side(Eg: Workbooks) xz

    Hi Karthik;

there are some docs you can follow; but here are some tips:

    1. try to avoid navigational attributes unless you have to because it's an extra table that has to access.

    2. If you using homogenous multiproviders and possible restrict the report with cube in the filter area.

    3. starts with less aggreagtion level while doing restrictions.

    4. Not to use summation and sub-totals if the users don't need it.

    etc.

    Hi all,

Will you please tell me , how to improve the performance of data loading in ODS.

    Thanks,

    Vincent

DB:3.49:How To Improve The Performance Of Data Loading In Ods. az

    Hi Antony,

To ensure a good ODS object loading performance, take the following into account:

    1.Initialization, then deltas

To load data into an ODS object, initialize first and then load deltas. Also note that the table for new data must not have more than one million data records. If necessary, carry out the initialization in several steps, using selection criteria.

    2.Avoid SIDs

Extracting SIDs takes a long time and can be avoided by:

Not setting the indicator for BEx Reporting if you are using the ODS object only as a data store. If you do set this indicator, SIDs are extracted for all new characteristic values.

If you use line items (for example, document number, time stamp) as characteristics in the ODS object, in the characteristic maintenance, flag these as "Attribute Only".

3.DB partitioning in active data tables (technical A table)

By partitioning by database level, you can delete data from the ODS object much more quickly. As a partitioning criterion, choose the characteristic by which you want to delete

    4.Indexing

Use selection criteria for queries for ODS objects. If the key fields are specified, the existing primary index is used. The more frequently accessed characteristic should appear on the left-hand side.

    Hope this helps...

Hi Raj, How is your direct access datasource built ? Is this a standard datasource or generic datasource on any view/table/function module. This strengthens my second point. Suppose you built a virtual cube on direct access datasource built on AUFK table with Order as primary key (Order master data). when you use Order as selection on query built on this virtual cube then it retrievies the data faster than firing the query on other selections. If your selections are different. You can possibly create a secondary index on the table with selections used in query.Regardsvamsi

I have already created indexes on characteristics of DSO which are used in query selection.

Will creating indexes on Key field(Some Id used in query selection) improve the query performance ?

depending on data in cube and frequency of query usage, you can decide whether to go for creating BIA indexes or creating Aggregates on cube. Both of them will improve query performance.

Doesn't indexes affect (improve) the performance of select-statements from views? We had a select-statement that was very slow and it did not seem like indexes on the underlaying table made any difference on the execution time. Running the query directly against the table instead of the view was much faster. Is this how it should be or can we do something to improve the performance against the view also?

    DB:3.48:Indexes And Views sj

Doesn't indexes affect (improve) the performance of select-statements from views ?
Hard to say, It might or it might not. Views just add another level of complexity to a qeuries and can be very difficult to tune, especially views of views of views.

Your best bet (if it works) to persuate a view to use an index its not using is to add a (sometimes redundant) WHERE clause condition referencing a column in the index. Might not work, but does sometimes on 10g. Another option is to use global hints in the outer select listing the view name and the index you want to use; be careful to use the view's alias names if you try this or the hint will be ignored.

the execution plan was also pretty good.

    Eveything seemed good for me.
Can any one suggest me any more things that i need to look into ?

DB:3.48:How To Improve Performance Of Query x3

One day, when I have sufficient time I am planning on writing about it extensively. When it comes to performance, there are several levels that you can look at it, and optimize it.
You seem to have covered the way the query is written, as well as a good indexing strategy. There might be some other elements in that area such as User Defined Functions that might need optimization (or avoidance), where the query is placed (in a stored
procedure or elsewhere), whether it involves a cursor or loops, etc.
Arbi Baghdanian already mentioned a two other areas that you can manage to a certain extend. The one is locking, and the other is the optimization of the storage structure. In this area you can think of fragmentation, table partitioning, good use of data
types, compression, etc. This build upon physical storage type, RAID level, file placement and file groups, etc.
Having said all this, the topics above are all academic. A major factor in performance is the runtime situation, such as how busy the server is, whether the query plan and relevant data is in cache, whether you have sufficient resources of all the kinds
you need, what the maximum speed is of an individual CPU thread, network transfer, read/write. So make sure you test, test, test.Gert-Jan

    Hi BW gurus,

Most of our queries run on ODS and the performance is very very bad. We have daily loads into these ODS's. We want to improve it. BW implemented 3 years back. GL ODS has 100 millions, AR AP ODS has around 20 millions. What is the best strategy to improve the performance?

    1. Archiving the data

    2. Creating the MultiProvider by splitting the data into yearly based like 2004, 2005 2006

    3. Creating the InfoCubes and loading ODS data into these InfoCubes and reporting against InfoCubes.

    4. ???????????????

What is your recommendations, please ?

    Thanks,

    Venkat.

DB:3.47:How To Improve The Ods Query Performance ?????? 37

If CUBE is not an option..

You can split the existing ODS into multiple ODS based on FISCAL Year or excusively based on QUERY-Usage by user.

This requires new quieries that get data from a targeted ODS rather from a global ODS.

Any consolidated dat can be acheived by an MultiCube/Multiprovider.

Carefull selection of Index( and order of infoobjects in Index) will improve the query performance.

How we can improve the Query performance of a Query which was fetching data from multiprovider built on 7 cubes?

    DB:3.46:Sap Bw Aggregates j1

    Hi,

Aggregates is to built, when queries on that cube frequently in use.

And the database parameters for that query exceeds the SAP specified values.

How to Tell if an Aggregate Will Help

    Do the following Steps

Call query or InfoCube overview in technical content or ST03

#56256;#56452;Sort by mean overall time to find queries/InfoCubes with highestruntimes

Calculate the KPI aggregation ratio= number of records read from DB / number of records transferred

Check quota of database time to total runtime As a rule of thumb, an aggregate will be helpful if the query statistics show:

Summarization Ratio 10Summarization Ratio 10,I.e. 10 times more records are read than are displayed, AND

Percentage of DB time 30%Percentage of DB time 30%,I.e. the time spent on database is a substantial part of the whole query runtime

DB:3.43:Upper &Amp; Trim Performance Issue.. fj

    Hi ,

In my application,in Query we are using "Upper" "trim" functionality.. So when we execute the query it is taking time to fetch the records in Apex compared to Toad.. Instead of using Upper trim in Query can we use client side validations for this.. to improve the better performance..

Can any one help me, how do we proceed in client side...

    anoo..

DB:3.43:Upper &Amp; Trim Performance Issue.. fj

    Hello,

TOAD typically 'pages' through the results, showing only the first 500 or so by default (depending on your settings - this is from memory, so I could be wrong about that number), take a look at the following threads which contain details (such as the pagination scheme) which might be applicable in your case -

Re: SQL query performance between TOAD and APEX

    Re: SQL Performance

Re: First rows performance when querying large number of rows

Also, if you show your code we might be able to help with your query tuning (such as a function based index on the UPPER call you're making etc)

    Hope this helps,

    John

DB:3.42:How Query Cost And Execution Time Are Releated ? 7p

    hi experts,
i am curious to know, how the query cost and execution time is related?
Query taking less time ,query cost is 65%, but query taking more time but query cost is 0%.
how to connect both and improve query performance.
    Thanks

DB:3.42:How Query Cost And Execution Time Are Releated ? 7p

I always look at the result SET STATISTICS TIME ON... Especially on how much CPU takes..

We have to keep in mind though that blocking invalidates some of the data.

DB:3.42:Retrieving The Data In Bi Dashboards z1

    Hi,

How to improve the performance of Retrieving the Data in BI Dashboards as my query is taking only 10 secs to execute in the back end.

I have also created the indexes on necesary columns to improve the performance. But displaying that data in the dashboard is taking very much time.

    Thank You,

    -Vency

DB:3.42:Retrieving The Data In Bi Dashboards z1

    Hi,

I am using OCI driver only and also Server is generating Correct query. I have checked this query and executed in TOAD and it is executing very fast (10 secs).

Still searching for the way: Why BI Server is taking very much time to retrieve the data? and afterwards I need to overcome that cause.

    Thank You,

    -Vency
