Can I edit photos in iPhoto without storing photos there (will use external hard drive for storage)?

DB:3.81:How Do I Use Iphoto To Edit Photos Without Storing Photos In It (Will Store On External Hard Drive) z9

YesMoving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhotoAnd backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive And note that you do not view photos on TM - it is a backup system and you must restore files from TM to use themLN

To run iPhoto with your iPhoto library on the external drive quit iPhoto, drag your iPhoto library from the pictures folder to the external drive and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option to point to your external drive copy of the iPhoto Library.

Once you have tested the library on the EHD you can quit iPhoto and drag the one on your internal drive to the trash (do not empty the trash until you test iPhoto one more time)

    DB:3.45:External Hard Drive kk

External drives come in different sizes and speeds and connections. Connectuons are via Firewire, Esata, Thunderbolt, USB 3, USB 2 and network Routers. The new bread of routers can be use as a file server. External drives can have desktop type drives housed in small external enclosures the come with power brick and required cable. A 4TB external drive can be had for under $200 USD. Go with the fastest connection type you machine can use. If you have a desktop you may be able to add a card to your machine to support a faster connection. Thunderbolt, FireWire or USB 3. New Routers have wired Giga Bit switches and have USB 3 port. You can share an external drive with all your machines using a router. External Drives fail just like internal drives. Backing up you files is important. The larger the drive is the more a crash can loose.

That actually copies the data, whereas a "move" on the same disk just changes the indexes. Among other things, it prevents data loss if something goes wrong with the copying. Then I opened iMovie, found the project on the external drive, but it would not play. This answer may need to be expanded a bit. If your photos are in iPhoto and you are moving iPhoto's library to an external drive, once you've dragged the library to the external drive you'll need to let iPhoto know the library has moved. Hold the option key and double-click iPhoto (or click on the iPhoto icon on the Dock). You'll get a fileselector menu to select the library - point it to the external drive. Once you've established that the copied library has copied correctly you may drag the library on your computer to the trash and empty the trash.Warning: You do have a backup of your entire computer, right? Just in case something goes awry with the process having a backup is always a good idea.

o.k., I just wanted to be sure of your Aperture version, for I have not worked with Aperture 2 for a long time.I want keep my aperture library on my macBookPro and when import photos copy it on external hard drive. This way i let my MacBookPro hard drive free. How can i do it?I think, what you should go for is a referenced Aperture library. Keep your Library on your MacBookPro, and when you import images to Aperture relocate the Master image files to your external volume. You should set your Aperture Preferences to build Previews of all images - set the Preview size to the size of your screen (this is set in the Preference panel, Previews tab). This way you can use all your images in the screensaver and in the Media Browser, so that you can use them in other iLife and iWorks apps, even if your external disk is not available. You will be able to browse and tag the images in Aperture, but to be able to edit the images, you will have to connect the volume with the master image files.See: Working with Referenced Images in the User Manual: To relocate master image files launch Aperture and select the images in the browser; then select: File - Relocate Master(s)This will open a FileChooser panel; select a folder where you want to store your masters.Make sure your external volume is formatted "MacOS Extended" before you move any master image files there, otherwise you may run into problems with ambigious filenames.I like to keep the most current projects I am currently working on as managed masters on my MBP, and when I am finished with the Books and Slideshows, I relocate the masters to my external Media Drive. Post back, if you have more questions.RegardsLonie

how do i save photos to external drive and possibly set it up that all photos go to external drive so i can save room on my hard drive

DB:3.31:I Photo And External Drive fx

    Hello Myron,

It can be very handy to store your iPhoto library (and your iTunes library for that matter) on an external drive. Make sure the drive is formated for Mac (MacOSExtended) rather than for Windows (MS-DOS, etc.). Storing Mac data on a windows formated drive reduces performance and can damage data over time.

Apple documents moving the library to other locations on their website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6331.html

You can check to make sure your drive is formated correctly and re-format if needed following another knowledge base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306143

Please be aware that if you do have to reformat the drive it will ERASE any information currently on the drive.

    Cheers!

I suggest buying drives in triplicate (yes, I do). Use one drive for storage of your Referenced Originals. Use the other two drives for back-up. Rotate your back-ups regularly, store one off site, and never have all three drives in the same physical location. This has a higher initial cost than other strategies, but is, IME, the least costly to administer and the easiest way to secure my data. Not having to worry about security is worth the initial cost, to me.I use SuperDuper! to copy/back-up/duplicate drives/drive contents. Carbon Copy works well, too.

hi,last night i installed an external hard drive. i dragged and dropped iphoto to the hard drive, then began to delete photos from the original iphoto on the mac hard drive.

when i turned on the mac today the photos have been deleted from both copies of iphoto. I've emptied the trash.
is there anyway to get them back? How can i fix it so only the mac photos get deleted not those on the external hard drive? How can I upload to the external hard drive? Theres no space to upload onto the mac, hence the external drive.

    Thanks Kara

I just reread your original post and noticed that your discription omits one thing that I had assumed you had taken care of.

After copying your iPhoto Library folder to the external drive, did you follow the procedure outlined in the iPhoto Help topic, "Switching between photo libraries"?

If you did not, then it explains the problem you are describing -- iPhoto is unaware of the library you intend to use, and is simply opening the original library in your Pictures folders because it is still the "current" library (although the database is now corrupted by the manual file deletions).

I copied all of my photos onto an external hard drive to save space on my Mac G4 laptop. Then I deleted all of the photos on my laptop. Now, when I am in Lightroom and try to access photos from the external hard drive via LIghtroom I get a dialogue box that tells me that "The files already exist in the catalogue." This is where I am stymied. I can not import the photo(s) but neither can I find the catalogue where they are located. In fact, I do not understand how catalogues work. Please note that I did not export the photos as part of a Lightroom library. I just copied them straight to the external hard drive. DB:3.26:Lack Of Space - Where Are The Back Up Photos 88

    Hi Everyone,

I have recently purchased an external hard drive because my computer hard drive is now on critical storage - 1.2GB. This is causing my computer to be completely slow. After purchasing the drive, I went to Finder, choose Pictures folder and copy this into the hard drive.

When I went to iPhoto and I couldn't find the hard drive in the tabs or how I can view the photos from the hard drive in iPhoto. I need to delete all of my photos so that I can create space.

If this is not the proper way to back up and view photos can someone please tell me how. That way I can free up my space on my computer, feel confident that my photos are safe and can access them in iPhoto.

Thanking you guys in advance for your help.

DB:3.26:Lack Of Space - Where Are The Back Up Photos 88

That is the proper way to use use iPhoto library on an external drive - it is not a backup - it is the only copy

Quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library (or the entire pictures folder if you want) to the external drive as a single entity and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key to select the library on the EHD - once you have tested it there you can delete the one on your internal drive

You should always have a minimum of 10GB of free hard drive space on your boot drive

And it is a very good idea to have a backup (a second copy) of your important data - like your photos

    DB:3.25:Hard Drive Space ms

To add to your post John,

    A line from Adobe's help:

Lightroom renders three types of previews: thumbnails, screen resolution images, and 1:1 previews. 1:1 previews have the same pixel dimensions as the original photos. All previews are stored in the folder where your catalog is located.

The key piece here I think is that "previews are stored in the folder where your catalog is located". So if the catalog is on the main drive and you render 1:1 previews, that will eat a lot of space.

Would recommend the only Adobe article on where files are located:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=333660sliceId=2

And have a detailed look at them with file browser to see where the culprits are; then move them off the drive that has space problems. That would probably mean, moving the catalog.

iCloud is not designed for general file storeage/backup from your Mac. The most expedient backup strategy would be to get an external HD (about 2x the size of your boot drive) and use Time Machine to backup your boot drive. OT

I have been using an external hard drive to store my photos. They currently hold around 30,000 photos. I want to copy those 10,000 photos onto the external drive, and then delete the 10,000 from the internal drive as it is taking up too much space. How do I do this is a seamless way so that lightroom omnce again sees all my photos on the external drive only? thank you

    DB:3.23:Hard Drive Confusion 9a

I have found physically moving lots of folders inside LR rather slow, though it is certainly the simplest way of all.

Another method which may be faster overall: close LR and use your operating system to move the whole set of folders, onto the external drive (*). The relative arangement of the folders involved needs to be kept, but the absolute path that they live in, does not need to be the same.

Then start LR up. All of the images concerned will appear as offline, and currently still listed as being on your local drive. Right-click on the containing folder (which now shows a ? icon) and choose "update folder location". Browse to the new location where this folder is now stored, on the external drive. All the images and folders will become operational, all their edits etc intact, in their new location - once LR has an updated address for finding that.

(*) this presumes that these folders contain principally LR-relevant files, and that you do not mind also moving any other files which they may contain. However, if it is important ONLY to move or to copy images that LR actually has imported, then another technique will be better, involving "Export as Catalog" with "include negatives" checked. Under this technique, LR creates file copies in the new location in a much more selective way. Then you would remove the images from your main catalog (with or without deleting the files from local disk), then Import from Catalog using the one you have just Exported.

But either of the first two ways, is much simpler

So you're running a "managed library", right? Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. If you can't then first try this: iPhoto_Pref_and_Cache make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder. Click to view full size3 - launch iPhoto and try again. NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences. If that doesn't help a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder, reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on and apply the latest updaters.

Closed app, click on Apple HD, has apps, library, system, users. Also on left I have idisk, desktop, john (me), apps, docs, movies, music, pictures.
Can I just restore it to the way it was before I did all of this crap? If I "restore" it to a month ago, it will be fine.....Is this possible? How do I do it?
Basically, my photos are there under various places, and I need to put them back to where the hel_ they belong.......they are all mixed up. IS there a program that will do this, or can I restore it back a month or two....

How did you move them? If you used Time Machine, those are backups and can't be used directly. You need to move them, per the link supplied by Rysz.

DB:3.18:Time Machine Records Pictures In Iphoto But I Cannot Access Them. I Only See A Card With Design On To. I Even Installed A New Seagate 1tb External Hard Drive, But Get The Same Result. Any Ideas How To Access Photos/Events? pa

iPhoto uses a database to store the photos and all the information about changes to those photos.Backup and restore of any live database, or partial restore is much more difficult than the backup and restore of a full closed database.I can only presume that Apple decided it was safer to remove the partial restore and browser functionality from TIme Machine and the later iPhoto versions. This is from the link I posted.quote " When using iPhoto 11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library."Further to that is the following quote"Additional InformationAlways quit iPhoto before restoring from Time Machine. Time Machine canʼt do a full iPhoto Library backup when iPhoto is open. To ensure that Time Machine does a complete backup of your library, periodically quit iPhoto before backing up."Time Machine is an excellent way to backup and restore your data but it should not be your only option. Consider having at least two versions of a backup,1. TM that will allow you to restore different versions of your files.2. A clone of your hard drive or drives that will give you a point in time exact copy of the hard drive that you cloned. Seehttp://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/superduperdescription.htmlhttp://www.bombich.comHave the two backups ( TM and clone) on different hard drives, that way you always have two copies of your data, if your computer hard drive fails you have two possible ways to recover. The same rule applies to clones, close open files and databases before backup. It does not answer your question on knowing your photos are safe but the only way to test a backup procedure correctly is to do a restore.I would not recommend restoring over the software on your hard drive but if you really felt the need you could restore the clone to another external disk drive.I am happy with my two TM and clone backups, yes that is 4 in all, I don't do test restores. There are ways to recover a single photo from TM, it is not an Apple supported option and care needs to exercised when attempting it. If you ask on the iPhoto forum I am sure you will get an answer.

If you're wanting to just backup the original image files be sure to select Kind = Original when you export out of iPhoto. You can also select the option Subfolder = Event to get each Event's original files exported to a folder with that events name:But then if you're wanting to operate your library from the EHD then copy it over and open as Larry described. Please launch PSE10 Organizer. Import your photos using File Get Photos and Videos and locating your external hard drive.

Organizer catalog will store links to these images and any tagging that you do, will be saved in the catalog. To write these tags to the image metadata, you have to use File Write metadata to photos (Ctrl+W) command.

As obvious, the external hard drive should be connected while working on these images, else they will be shown as offline thumbnails in Organizer.

Here are your options:A: Export from the Library on the internal disk to the Finder. This means you won't get all your versions as you'll need to choose between the original and the edited version. You will also miss some metadata - faces at the very least, and possibly more - depending on the export settings you choose. Then import those to the other Library. This User Tiphttps://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921has details of the options in the Export dialogue. B: Use iPhoto Library Manager to move everything - all the metadata, all the versions between the Libraries.C: Use Aperture to do the same thing, if you have the rght version of Aperture and iPhoto. But if you don't note that Aperture is more expensive than iPhoto Library Manager

    2) Is the external hard drive listed in Windows explorer?
    3) Are you referring to Windows live Photo gallery?
    4) Are you using Windows Live photo gallery or Photo app?

Windows 8 doesn’t include Windows Live Photo gallery. you need to install it manually. If you have already installed it and facing this issue i would suggest you to post in Windows Live Photo gallery forum.

In Windows 8 you can use Photo app to upload pictured from external hard drive, follow the steps given below.

    a) Connect the external hard drive to your computer.
    b) In the Photos app, swipe up from the bottom edge or down from the top edge, then tap Import.
    c) Tap or click the external drive you want to import from.
    d) Swipe down on or right-click each photo or video you want to import to select it.
    e) Enter a name for the folder you want to put the files in and tap or click Import.
    f) When your files are finished importing, tap or click Open folder to see them in the Photos app.

Create a directory on your desktop, drag the pictures from iPhoto there, connect the USB Drive, open iPhoto, then drag the Directory with the pictures to iPhoto. But, no need to have two iPhoto Libraries.Use Image Capture to transfer the photos from your camera to your Desktop, then connect the drive and drag the photos to iPhoto on your external drive.See: http://www.macworld.com/article/143001/2009/09/imagecapture_tricks.htmlDigital PhotoEight amazing Image Capture trick1. Keep iPhoto in its placeIf youve been terrorized by iPhoto launching every time you plug in your digital camera or iPhone, you can fix the problem with a few clicks in Image Capture. Launch Image Capture, connect your device, and make sure it is highlighted in the left column. Now choose what you want to have happen from the popup menu at the bottom of the column. Image capture will list all of the available photo programs; selecting one will set it as the default application for the camera. This means the program will launch when you plug in the device. You can also choose to have nothing happen when the camera is plugged in. Whats even cooler is that you can set different actions for different devices. If you want iPhoto to launch when you connect your compact camera, for example, but dont want anything to pop up when you plug in your iPhone, Image Capture will take care of it.Tony

Do I duplicate the library using the iphoto library in the finder then or do I do it through iphoto somehow?

You duplicate the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.

I want to move one to another mac to free up space so I should be able to put that library onto the ext hard drive then open it in the new computer and be confident all the albums and folders will be there (but not the slideshows right?)

The slideshows should be there also. You may have file permissions issues on the new machine so Download BatchMod from

    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/

And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

Is it easy to switch between libraries?

Yes. Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'.
