A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

Open MSE and see *why* MSE says the PC is at risk. if it says you haven't scanned in a while, but you have just completed a scan successfully, the following may apply:

Courtesy of forum users le Boule and ahaap:

Are you using CCleaner? Piriform has programmed it for some reason to remove part of the MSE History files and it's deleting the files MSE checks to determine the last time a scan was conducted.

Open CCleanerApplications Tab, Under Windows uncheck MS Antimalware...that should prevent CCleaner from deleting the MS Antimalware scanning historyfiles. The actions of CCleaner should not have any effect on the antimalware protection provided by MSE.
Per suggestion of MSE User MartinHampton
you may also need to uncheck MS Management Console.
You mayneed to run a "Quick Scan" and possibly re-boot the computer to re-establish a scan history.

Do you use Advanced System Care?
If so, open ASC, in the upper right corner, click More, Settings
Scroll to Quick Care, Privacy Sweep, go to Windows, uncheck MS Antimalware and MS Management Console.
Scroll to Deep Care, Privacy Sweep, go to Windows, uncheck MS Antimalware and MS Management Console.
Or contact ASC Support at: http://www.iobit.com/

Why does my Microsoft Security Essential icon stays yellowish/orange when it detects a virus. I do the update and quick scan and it still wont change back to green???

    DB:3.63:Microsoft Security Essential Question ad

When MSE finds malware the tray icon turns red and you will see a popup message in the right lower corner of your screen. After you click on the popup to "tell MSE to clean your computer" and the malware is removed or quaratined depending on your settings,
    the icon will turn green.

The icon should not turn "orange" while "handling" malware.

Is the icon turning orange and giving you a message that your computer is potentially unprotected? You mentioned updating and then scanning yet you still say you have an orange icon.

Please see if the following re using CCleaner or Advanced System Care apply to your situation. If not, please follow thesuggestions in thefinal paragraph:

Are you using CCleaner? Piriform has programmed it for some reason to remove part of the MSE History files and it's deleting the files MSE checks to determine the last time a scan was conducted.

Open CCleanerApplications Tab, Under Windows uncheck MS Antimalware...that should prevent CCleaner from deleting the MS Antimalware scanning historyfiles. The actions of CCleanershould not have any effect on the antimalware protection provided
    by MSE.
You may also need to uncheck MS Management Console.
To re-establish a scan history, you mayneed to run a "Quick Scan" and possibly re-boot the computer.

Do you use Advanced System Care? We have reports of ASC “deleting” administrative files from MSE in the same manner that CCleaner is deleting them. Again, these are administrative files and the removal of same by ASC is an inconvenience
to the users of MSE but removal of the files does not affect the antimalware protection of MSE.
If so, open ASC, in the upper right corner, click More, Settings
Scroll to Quick Care, Privacy Sweep, go to Windows, be sure MS Antimalware and MS Management Console (if visible) are unchecked.
Scroll to Deep Care, Privacy Sweep, go to Windows, be sure MS Antimalware and MS Management Console (if visible) are unchecked.
Click on Auto Clean under Automatic Service - uncheck the MS AntiMalware under windows - then click the button to Apply and OK.

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91
You should be able to uninstall from the “Add/Remove Programs”, or “Programs and Features”, depending on your OS.
If that fails, you can use this procedure provided by forum contributor
    Aiscer.
    1. Download the MSE installer file from the
website and save the file on the Desktop.
This will allow you to find it easily after the download is done.
    2. Now press the Windows key (or
Start key) and R both at the same time. This will open the
    RUN dialog box.
    3. Next, delete/clear any entries inside
RUN, then drag the MSE installer file into the
    RUN dialog box.
    4. Depending on your Operating System, after dragging the file into
RUN, it shouldappear as oneof the three below:
    ·
    C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe
    · C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
    · C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
    5. Now put a SPACE at the end of the line, followed by a
    /U as seen below:
    · C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe /U
    · C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe /U
    · C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe /U
    6. Click OK.
    7. Restart your system after the uninstall.

Make sure you are at the latest service pack (XP SP3, Vista SP2) and latest updates for your OS.

Then, do the install again from
    www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

And, do not be afraid to release the caps lock.

You may be visiting a web site that has been infected or is hosting malware.

You should never respond unrequested pop-ups that try to persuade you to download and install software.

Doing that is the way to get malware because no decent company would use such methods to inform you about that.

You only saw an animation and not a real scan.

If you still have SuperAntispyware installed and running -
You should never have more than one security product installed on the PC providing active protection/scanning. This can cause performance issues, system instability, and can hinder the effectiveness of both products at providing protection.

    For the current infection -

    ******************************************************************

Here are general instructions for installing MSE if you get past that or if this helps you avoid that error:

To re-install, check out this article and follow ALL the procedures:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/check-list-for-installing-microsoft-security/bf757e6a-e320-4a67-92bc-767e6acb26c4 - but also check out the next paragraph before you begin the download.

If you do or ever did have any other AV program installed on your computer (even if you didn't use it), you need to make sure they are all uninstalled and fully removed before you install. To fully remove them, check out this listing of removal toolshttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91
or the listing in that article at the bottom under troubleshooting steps (why this link isn't at the top near things to do first where it discusses removing all the prior and current AV programs is beyond me) or, if not on the lists, go to the website of the
AV software and get and use the removal tool for that product. You cannot just uninstall these programs – you MUST also use the removal tool – even if the uninstall was years ago but you didn’t use a removal tool at the time.

    To install, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx and click on languages and locales at the bottom of the Download button and then choose your language and the appropriate version for your operating system. When you download, save it to the
desktop (rather than running it). When finished, right click on the installation icon and click run as Administrator (even if you’re logged in as an administrator) as I’ve found this sometimes helps.

Then you need to configure your settings, set a scheduled scan, enable real-time protection, update MSE, and then run a quick scan (or a full scan if you have time).

I also recommend the following setup for MSE (though the decision is yours - I've just found this helpful and the most effective and best way to set it up and is how I have mine configured):

Make sure that ALL threat levels are sent to Quarantine where you can then decide whether or not to allow them or leave them there, or remove them. It is the safest solution for having the most options for dealing with the situation. Quarantine is as safe
as removed, but in some cases you may want to remove them to be more certain - and with this one I would remove it (when the time comes). To do this, open MSE, click on the Settings Tab, and for each of the threat levels, set the action to be Quarantine and
    save.

Go to the History tab and click on allowed and unless you specifically placed something in allowed, remove everything else from the allowed category. Only put things there that you ABSOLUTELY know are not problems (are "false positives") and triple-check
before you do it as doing this could allow a real threat to bypass security and infect you and it won't be detected or rather won't be reported or acted upon by MSE.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Real-time protection and check all the boxes and save.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on SpyNet and click on Advanced and save. This is not at all dangerous to you and no information sent will be used by Microsoft to identify you even if some minor identification information is sent in terms of defining the
infection, but it can sometimes help with new threats by initiating an immediate update to deal with the problem if it is in the SpyNet database (and it helps Microsoft update definitions to provide you and everyone else better protection).

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Advanced and check the box for save Quarantine items and change it from one month to three months so you have more time to decide if you want to restore something.

    *************************************************************

If that doesn't help, then there's a good chance you may be infected by malware. Please proceed as follows:

First, try the following programs if you haven't as they may help. I recommend you download, install, update, and run full scans with Malwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware:http://superantispyware.com/
and then run a full Safety Scan from Microsoft:http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx. These may or may not remove the infections, but will probably not repair
any damage caused by them. Even if they or your current AV software seem to work or indicate you aren't infected, you shouldn't completely trust them and need to continue with the recommendations that follow (so it's up to you if you want to try them first
or just skip over all of this and get the expert help you really need as described below).

Properly and completely removing such infections can be complex and often require manual removal procedures (which may or may not be entirely effective either). Even if they work, I'd suggest the following anyway, so we may as well start there (you can ignore
the above removal methods if you want as this is really the way to go, but it won't hurt to try them).

Please follow these recommendations compliments of Stephen Boots - MVP:

Start here - https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/ and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected - and then select the
support option for phone, chat or email (options will vary by Region)

In other regions not served by the link above, go here:http://Support.microsoft.com/securityand go to the “assisted support” or contact us menu.

If that doesn't work or they can't help, try one of the following malware-removal forums compliments of PA Bear - MVP:

DB:3.42:New Security Essential Client Update Package Makes Some Problems ka

    Greetings community,
    It’s about Windows 7 Pro x64.
Today Windows Update installed new Client Update Package for Microsoft Security Essential, as important update. After that, in the history list of installed updates, I can see that Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essential with version number
1.137.666.6 is listed three times. Moreover, in the list of available optional updates I still can see the same update.
Furthermore, I opened Microsoft Security Essential and clicked update. Now in the updates history, I have said definition update listed four times.
So have I done something wrong, and am I expected to do anything else but waiting for new Client Update Package for Security Essential?
    Thanks for responses.

DB:3.42:New Security Essential Client Update Package Makes Some Problems ka

If MSE v4.0.1526.0 was installed, upgrading to v4.1.522.0 wouldn't require a reboot.
That being said, you may have installed one or more other updates at the same time (e.g., KB2732059; KB2744842; KB2735855)which
did require a reboot (whether you caught the prompt to do so or not).
In any event, all's well that ends well. You're welcome thanks for your feedback.

I installed Microsoft security essentail on my server (running window XP). After installationI was unable to access a shared folder on my server from other client computers. The error message says "not enough server storage toprocess this command."
After I uninstall Microsoft security essential from my server, then I can again access the shared folder. I tried other anti virus program on my server (Norton Symantec antivirus) and it ran into same problem.

I also tried to play with the setting of the Microsoft secruity essential, (i.e. excluding the sharedfolder from real-time protection but it still didn't allow any access to the shared folder on server from the client computer.

In order to access my server, do I have to leave my server unprotected without antivirusprogram?

If someone can help me that would be great.

DB:3.42:Not Enough Server Storage To Process This Command - Error When Tried To Access Server Share Folder After Installing Microsoft Security Essential On My Server. mk

Yes, my server is not a real server, just a XP machine. I am not running a remote program on the server from a seperate computer in the network. I am only sharing a folder on the server with my other computers. And yes, I have properly assigned the share
function to that particular folder to be shared.

As I mentioned before, I was able to share that folder before installation of Window security essential and also after I removed the Window Security Essential. Similiarly, I was able to share the folder before installation of Norton symantic antivirus
program and also after I removed the program.

While the antivirus program is in use, I was unable to share folder, however, I was able to access the printers attached to the server.

If there is any solutions, that would be great.

am unable to update microsoft security essential (error code 0x80248008)

DB:3.42:Am Unable To Update Microsoft Security Essential Error Code 0x80248008 fd

    Hi fasi,

This error code typically applies to WSUS updates in a Windows Server environment. If that's the case, you need to discuss the problem with the server Systems Administrator as the problem is likely between the server and the clients.

In C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, find and delete the contents (but not the folders themselves) of
ONLY the following two folders: Downloads and DataStore.

And this MAY help resolve the problem if it is caused by an incomplete or stuck update - but it is not guaranteed to fix the update problem because at this point we don't really know the cause. This is one cause and there are many others that this procedure
    won't resolve.

If that doesn't help, then try the following:

Are your Windows Updates working? Is it only the MSE updates that aren't working?

Please follow these recommendations compliments of Dr. Strangelove:

    Review this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Also, verify that you have removed all other real-time antimalware products that were ever installed on your PC, including free/trial product that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, OneCare, Malwarebytes (paid),
etc). Then, use the cleanup tools here:
List of anti-malware program cleanup/uninstall tools.
You MUST use the cleanup/removal tools to get rid of these programs properly as the normal uninstall process leaves remnants behind that cause problems with any other AV product you install later including MSE.

NOTE: If you have installed Adobe FLASH, and you already had the Google toolbar, you were presented with the option to install “McAfee Security Scanner”, which is selected by default. If you were caught by this, and unknowingly/accidentally
installed McAfee, uninstall it and use the McAfee cleanup tool in the list above.

Verify that your PC clock is correctly set. If not, correct it.

Verify that Windows Defender is uninstalled (if XP), or Disabled (if Vista/W7).

Verify that you are up-to-date with SERVICE PACKS and updates (including .NET and IE). Yes, it can take some time to do this.

Verify that you are using version 2.0.657.0 or 2.1.1116.0 of MSE.

Next see the following compliments of Stephen Boots - MVP:

    Update FAQ - http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/mseupdate/thread/74e507b8-f6da-4eca-8ce7-d1aca7d3f1ba

You can manually download the (large file with engine and full definitions) latest definitions from the portal here:

If you are having problems with MSE not updating automatically or with the Update button -

What operating system and service pack?

    Prior Security Software?

    Any security software still installed?

A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.

You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91

Be sure to review this post: Check list for installing Microsoft Security
    Essentials

Try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem.
Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal
status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

If that doesn't work, uninstall and re-install MSE. To uninstall MSE, proceed as follows:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4.

To re-install, check out this article and follow the procedures:

    - but also check out the next paragraph before you begin the download.

To install, go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx and click on languages and locales at the bottom
of the Download button and then choose your language and the appropriate version for your operating system.
When you download, save it to the desktop (rather than running it).
When finished, right click on the installation icon and click run as Administrator (even if you’re logged in as an administrator) as I’ve found this sometimes helps.

Hopefully, one of these solutions (or a step in one of these answers) will resolve the problem. If not, then open a support case describing the problem starting at:https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Hi Shaddo 1,
Disabling any anti virus application isn't really wise. However you must have a reason for wanting to 'temporaily' disable MSE so do the following:
1/ Right Click the MSE icon in the notification area.
    2/ Select Open.
3/ When MSE opens, click on the Settings tab.
4/ look down the list on the left hand side of the window for 'real time protection' and clcik on it.
5/ In the 'real time protection' window, remove the check mark (tick) from the 'turn on real time protection' option and then click Save changes.
This will temporarily disable MSE. Just remember to re-enable MSE when you have finished doing whatever it is you require MSE to be turned off for.

    Hi Anil,

Please see the following compliments of Le Boule:

Are you using CCleaner? Piriform has programmed it for some reason to remove part of the MSE History files and it's deleting the files MSE checks to determine the last time a scan was conducted. This file removal has no effect on the antimalware
    protection provided by MSE.

Open CCleaner Applications Tab, then Under Windows uncheck MS Antimalware...that should prevent CCleaner from deleting the MS Antimalware scanning history files.

Per suggestion of MartinHampton you may also need to uncheck MS Management Console.

You may need to run another quick scan and reboot the computer.

See this thread for more details and alternatives to resolve this problem if you are not using CCleaner:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/why-after-a-couple-of-days-after-a-scan-does-my/0dc5b433-28ec-4180-a8ee-26a6cd10c3ab

If that isn't it, please check your system clock to make sure it is correct (even a few minutes can matter - but I've seen it say 1978 or 2286 for the year). Resync it with the internet clock. If it need to be changed and keeps happening, change the
CMOS battery on the motherboard as that's almost always the cause of a system clock problem.

It is probably is not related to Microsoft Security Essentials, it will not change user's customise setting unless in case that remove Malware could cause that. It is not normal behavior by MSE.

This error message is a generic "catch-all" for install errors that can be due to a number of things. The most common reason is that conflicting security software exists on the PC. Other causes range from system corruption, services disabled or removed,
file or registry permissions in an incorrect state, and even an existing undetected infection.

That is normal, MSE will only do scan if PC is running , if you put it to sleep mode or shut down it, scan will stop.

But it stops scanning even though my email and a browser are still active. It appears I can restart the scan from the point at which it stopped.

Your email and browser are also stopping when the PC goes to sleep.
There is a difference between idle and sleep. Idle means that the PC is powered on and only background tasks are running. Most of the processor is idle and the drive may even stop spinning. Sleep is a low power state where the PC suspends all activity. An
open email program or web browser do not prevent sleep. Only keyboard and mouse (input) activity will prevent sleep, or a task configured to prevent sleep, or power settings to modify when the PC is allowed to sleep.

DB:3.29:Cant Update Microsoft Essential Security After Installed It xp

    Hi Romelotoke,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forums.

From the issue description, I understand that you are unable to update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on Windows 7 computer.

I understand it must be frustrating, but rest assured, we are here to help you and guide you in the right direction.

I would really appreciate if you can help me with the following information.

    1. Do you receive any error message/code when you try to update MSE?
    2. Is this issue specific to MSE update? Are you able to install Windows updates successfully?

The most common causes for update issues are problems with Internet connectivity. If you're online, then the issue might be caused by conflicts with your settings in Windows Internet Explorer.

Let's start with some possible troubleshooting ideas and check if it helps.

    Method 1
Verify that you have removed all other real-time antimalware products that were ever installed on your PC, including free/trial products that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, OneCare, Malware
    bytes (paid), etc).

Note: If you use more than one antivirus or antispyware program at the same time, your PC may experience decreased performance, become unstable, or restart unexpectedly. Before you install Microsoft Security
Essentials, or if you want to resolve issues with Microsoft Security Essentials, including updating issues, you must first completely remove any Internet security programs from your PC.

    Method 2
Refer to the help link and check.
Troubleshooting update issues for Microsoft Security Essentials
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/troubleshooting-update-issues

You can also install the updates manually from the link below.
How to manually download the latest definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971606?wa=wsignin1.0

    Hope it helps.
Keep us posted if you face any issues related to Windows in future. We will be glad to help you.

DB:3.26:Install Microsoft Security Essential On A Infected Computer px

    Hi,

Knowing your Windows version would help us help you.

This troubleshooter is for Windows 7 - Vista is very similar - for XP use RUN instead of

    Start - Search.
If you need to check for malware here are my recommendations - these will allow you to do
a thorough check and removal without ending up with a load of spyware programs running
resident which can cause as many issues as the malware and maybe harder to detect as

    the cause.

No one program can be relied upon to detect and remove all malware. Added that often easy
to detect malware is often accompanied by a much harder to detect and remove payload. So
its better to be overly thorough now than to pay the high price later. Check with these to an
extreme overkill point and then run the cleanup only when you are very sure the system is clean.

These can be done in Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot however you should also run
them in regular Windows when you can.

TDSSKiller.exe. - Download to the Desktop - then go to it and Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN
it will show any infections in the report after running - if it will not run change the name from
tdsskiller.exe to tdsskiller.com. Whether it finds anything or not does not mean you should not

DB:3.23:0x8004ff2e Error Occured While Installing Setup d9

    Hi AbdulgafoorNH,

You probably just used the wrong version - it happens a lot. Proceed as follows (but the answer is likely in the last paragraph):

All you need is to prepare the computer, download and install MSE, update and configure the settings on MSE (including scheduled scans if you want and I suggest and making sure real-time protection is checked along with check all downloads and check
all files and programs), run a quick scan to be sure you're clean (or a full scan if you have the time) and you'll be good to go.

Check out this article and follow the procedures: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/check-list-for-installing-microsoft-security/bf757e6a-e320-4a67-92bc-767e6acb26c4
    - but also check out the next paragraph before you begin the download.

    To install, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspxand click on languages and lccales at the bottom of the Download button and then choose your language and the appropriate version for your operating system.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

Between those two, norton by far. Out of everyone: Comodo Internet
Security Free is the best free and F-Secure Internet Security is the
best paid. Use both with ThreatFire and youll be 99.9% safe. Happy
    protecting!

You really should do some reading.

    Those are garbage!

Norton or Eset are the best period!

These two are far ahead of any others, especially Norton.
