DB:4.52:Querying Rolap Cubes Created By Owb 10g 77

    Hi

I've created a few fully pre-computed ROLAP cubes in OWB. But I'm really a bit confused how should I query them? Is it good solution to use simple SQL to query tables associated to cubes and dimensions? In that case how to limit dimension to certain level of hierarchy (although the cube is fully pre-computed - in table associated to cube the data is aggregated only at lowest level of hierarchy)? The good way is to use here ROLLUP, CUBE and GROUPING SETS commands?

Thank you in advance for any help

    Peter

    Hi Oleg

Thank for your answer. Maybe I formed my question in an unprecise way - sorry for that. I was thinking rather about query language (equivalent to OLAP DML for MOLAP cubes) than about BI tools to query such ROLAP cubes. I have to compare these two ones in my dissertation.

DB:3.38:Re: Structure Of Rolap Cubes Created By Owb 8s

    Hi

I've read that one can choose Auto-binding or Manual-binding option by creating ROLAP cubes.
When one chooses auto-binding option then a relational table is created and binded to the cube (this table is filled with data while executing ETL mapping to load the relational cube). In manual binding one can use e.g. materialized view to load the cube and consequently leverage query rewrite mechanism.

The relational table as ROLAP cube source is more effective than MV?

    Thank you in advance

DB:3.09:Hyperion Reporting From Oracle ? ds

Hi there. Newb-like question so forgive my lack of knowlege.

Is there any way for the Hyperion reporting tools to use structures generated from OWB (Oracle Warehouse Builder) normally used by Discoverer ? e.g dimensions and hierarchies, cubes definitions.

I would be talking more of the ROLAP structures rather than the analytical workspace stuff.

If not, then I assume that data from Oracle tables can be reported on directly (via ODBC?) or needs to be sucked into Essbase before it can be reported on by Hyperion reporting tools.

    Thanks

What are the things to be considered if we need to implement a complete rolap model for adhocaccess in terms ofaggregations and partitioning when we have a large number ofcalculations in the cube ,

I have gone through the technical case study on 'Analysis services rolap for sqlserver datawarehouses' ,as per the case study it

Sujjests that to build individual tables for each partition and use those tables as a DSV sourceAlign the cube partitionsAggregated queries related views are created by analysis services on the relational db which need to be materialized by the relational dbBulid transparent views for the expected aggregated queries which will be used across all cubes.

If we have 5 years worth of data and the data model is a normal star schema ,and the requirement is to issue adhoc queries across dimensional hierarchies across date ,organizations ,products ,customers which
are of both natural and ragged hierarchies, what are the steps which need to be done differently on the relational db to support a Rolap based cube ,and what are the steps need to be taken on the analysis services cube.

In terms of aggregated view creations on the relational db for rolap implemention ,does analysis services creates the same views which satisfy the aggregated queries as its done in molap cube ,if doesnt what are the steps needed to be implemented
at the relational db and analysis services rolap cube to get a similar performanceas we get on a cube based molap storage .
we have requirement to create number of different customcalculationson the cube ,what are the steps need to be considered in the rolap cube.

In terms of comparasion to microstrategy and Cognos how does rolap based cube in ssas has advantages and disadvantages .

Is it any possible way to implement the same feature for DIMENSION and CUBE objects. I dont want them to be used as views but as a table.

Is this even possible? Any or all feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you.

DB:2.70:Connecting Owb Workspace To Apex cf

Hi Xaman,Apex is built on a Metadata layer within the database (It's own tables). Apex users are stored in this metadata and are totally unconnected from your OWB instance. A schema / owner represents the Oracle user that owns all your database objects. What I believe you want to do is point both your OWB and APEX instances at the schema containing your database objects (Tables, Views, etc...)Further info on schemas: https://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:6162110256950 Documentation on how to create an Apex workspace using existing schema: Downloading from Oracle Technology NetworkJiminy.

    Hi All
I'm trying to determine if anyone else is experiencing the same issues.

We have finally got ROLAP aggregations being deployed from OWB Cubes after having DBMS_ODM patched.
However we are experiencing massive degradation in performance at the deployment stage where it is internally generating the MV scripts
e.g. cube 4 dimensions including calendar with 3 separate date hierarchies = 4 mins
to cube 6 dimensions including calendar with 3 separate date hierarchies = 2hrs20mins

These timings are also where the fact table is empty so data volumes are irrelevant.

Which is a massive spread and the last example is not even the real definition of business cube which is 8 dimensions 2 of which are complex calendar as above!!

The SQL which is showing as consuming CPU and db file sequential read is:

    select dimension_owner ,dimension_name ,level_name from SYS.OlapTabLevelTuples where id = :1 and selected = 1 order by dimension_owner ,dimension_name ,level_name

where the table is a global temporary table.

If you can let me know if this is typical for other users as well, before I raise an SR I'd appreciate it

    Hi,

I'm having serius problems with OWB, since I can't get any fact table to be successfuly deployed.

Previously I was getting error VLD-0917 after modifying a dimension that was used by all cubes (see my previous post in this forum). To try to solve this I disassociated this dimension from all cubes, then deleted the dimension, recreated it and then linked it to one cube to try and see what happened.

Now, I'm getting an internal error everytime I try to deploy this cube (see below). What can be happening? Does anyone have any ideas? Any hint will be much welcome, since I'm getting desperate here.

DB:2.69:Owb Internal Error While Trying To Deploy Fact Table 8m

    Hi Ed,

Sadly that's pretty much what I did at the moment: I had to manually rebuild all dimension/fact tables that were affected by that small change. I tried to contact oracle support and posted these same messages on the Metalink but didn't get too far that way.

The thing is that I'm having the same problem now: I changed a dimension attribute datatype from VARCHAR2 to INTEGER and stumbled upon the same situation, which, at this point in the development process, freaked me out. The affected dimension and related cubes were invalidated by this change. I then changed the datatype from INTEGER to NUMBER and everything seems to be working properly.

I know this is not much help. I haven't been able to find a root cause for this behavior, which, strangely enough, nobody else seems to be experiencing.

If I happen to find anything on this, I'll let you know.

DB:2.66:Rolap Storage - Cant See The Created Views In Relational Database jx

    Hi experts,
I have setone of mypartitions to ROLAP - I expected to see some created views in my relational source. I cannot see any change.
Are the views created by SSAS viewable in SSMS?
    Cheers.

DB:2.66:Rolap Storage - Cant See The Created Views In Relational Database jx

Thanks Paul, apparently views are created for aggregations when all of the conditions listedin the below extractare met. I believe my setup meets all the conditions - so i'm still not sure why they're not being created?
    Below is an extract from
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174915.aspx

If a partition uses the ROLAP storage mode and its source data is stored in SQL Server Database Engine, Analysis Services tries to create indexed views to contain aggregations of the partition. If Analysis Services cannot create indexed views, it does not
create aggregation tables. Although Analysis Services handles the session requirements for creating indexed views on SQL Server Database Engine, the following conditions must be met by the ROLAP partition and the tables in its schema in order for Analysis
Services to create indexed views for aggregations:

The partition cannot contain measures that use the Min or
    Max aggregate functions.

Each table in the schema of the ROLAP partition must be used only one time. For example, the schema cannot contain [dbo].[address] AS Customer Address and [dbo].[address] AS SalesRep Address.

Each table must be a table, not a view.

All table names in the partition's schema must be qualified with the owner name, for example, [dbo].[customer].

All tables in the partition's schema must have the same owner; for example, you cannot have a FROM clause that references the tables [tk].[customer], [john].[store], and [dave].[sales_fact_2004].

The source columns of the partition's measures must not be nullable.

All tables used in the view must have been created with the following options set to ON:

    ANSI_NULLS

    QUOTED_IDENTIFIER

The total size of the index key, in SQL Server Database Engine, cannot exceed 900 bytes. SQL Server Database Enginewill assert this condition based on the fixed length key columns when the CREATE INDEX statement is processed. However, if there are
variable length columns in the index key, SQL Server Database Enginewill also assert this condition for every update to the base tables. Because different aggregations have different view definitions, ROLAP processing using indexed views can succeed
or fail depending on the aggregation design.

The session creating the indexed view must have the following options set to ON: ARITHABORT, CONCAT_NULL_YEILDS_NULL, QUOTED_IDENTIFIER, ANSI_NULLS, ANSI_PADDING, and ANSI_WARNING. This setting can be made in SQL Server Management Studio.

The session creating the indexed view must have the following option set to OFF: NUMERIC_ROUNDABORT. This setting can be made in SQL Server Management Studio.

    Hi

Does anyone on the forum use OWB as well as ODI in their organisation or perhaps you've used OWB in the past?

With the new licensing it means an organisation can use either OWB or ODI or both if they wish. Oracle at some point will merge the tools but state that a migration path will be available and customers can safely use either tool.

Currently we use OWB in a Data Warehousing environment primarily to load ROLAP Stars which are exposed through a presentation layer in OBIEE. Our sources/targets are mainly flat files and Oracle. The future plan is to enhance the Stars with MOLAP cubes therefore the integration between OWB 11gR2 and OBIEE is of great interest.

I'm interested in peoples opinions on the Pros/Cons of using ODI or OWB in a Data Warehousing environment?

    In particular:

    - Does ODI support the design of Star Schemas in a similar manner to OWB i.e. hierarchies, levels etc.
    - Is one tool significantly better than the other in loading ROLAP Stars (in particular SCD2 handling) or MOLAP cubes?
    - Is the integration to OBIEE significantly better in one tool than the other (in particular around MOLAP)?
    - How does performance compare between the tools when loading to an Oracle DB?
    - Has anyone had expierience of migrating from OWB to ODI, is it basically a rebuild of mappings etc.?

    Thanks

    Si

There will be high volume of records DAILY going to the warehouse scd2, scd2 ,scd3 etc.
So suggested ROLAP implementation at the lowest granularity...transaction detail. OWB as tool

There will be one MOLAP implementation for aggregation and materialized view as cube . ( take advantage of query rewerite for aggregated results) USING AWM

now the question is CAN WE CREATE ONLY MOLAP warehouse using AWM that can serve aggregate as well as low gran transaction details.

we have to have owb for transformations as awm does not provide transformation .

for value based hierarchies and multiple hierarchies per dimension options there is no support in OWB for ROLAP implementation.

this only works for molap ..USING AWM

so how do we go about it ..OR A MIXED SCHEMA POSSIBLE

I am using OWB 10g release 2 but there is no feature for version control. The snapshot feature and export/import can help but Its very difficult with big project.

Is there any new feature with OWB 11g release 1 or 2 for version control ? Do you have any proposition for version control in 10g ?

    Hello!

We are testing OWB+Disco+DB 10g to use in purchase department for analysis

    DB 10.2.0
    Disco 10.1.2
    OWB 10.2.0.1

We have an EMPTY ROLAP cube with 3 ROLAP dimensions TIME (3000 elements),PRODUCT (305000 elements),CITY (100 elements)

All dimensions designed in OWB and published to CWM2. Dimension PRODUCTS has 1 standard Hierarchy with
    -17 elem. on first level
    -150 elem. on second
    -1000 elem. on third
    -2500 elem. on fourth
-300000 elem. on fifth (articles level)

Table which is bound to that dimension is indexed on each surrogate and business key + HASH partitioned by DIMENSION_KEY PK.

We connect with Disco PLUS OLAP to this DB and find out that it is very slow on dimension ROLLUP. It takes up to 12 seconds to get 27 rows.

Performance monitoring is unable to collect exact statements in Enterprise manager but showed a heavy User IO, so we enabled OLAP logging using
    alter system set sql_trace = true scope = spfile;
    alter system set "_olap_continuous_trace_file" = true scope= spfile;

and collected SQL statements from UDUMP
it is quite big statements so there is no need to post it here but it executes exactly 12 second and retrieve correct rows from dimension.

We analyzed explain plan and find out that in fact it does not use indexes built on our dimension table. It uses FULL TABLE SCANS for ROLLUP clause which results in 1000 cost and 150000 cardinality and 12 seconds result of 27 rows.

Is it possible to solve this question? We would like to use Disco PLUS OLAP for analysis...

    Thank you in advance

I have changed dimension storage mode to ROLAP also. The bad news is every time I ran query on this dimension I see this dimension is being processed.
I expect to see only querying underlying database but not processing an dimension every time.
Does anybody know how to avoid this?

DB:2.57:Date Dimension In Owb 11g2 - No Control Rows zc

    Hi Gurus,

I created a Date Dimension with the OWB Time Dimension Wizard and run the mapping, generated by the wizard. Looking at the data I am not seeing control rows for upper hierarchy levels. For all other dimensions that I created [ROLAP-relation storage] when running the corresponding mappings control rows are being generated by the mapping process. Control rows look to be a smart idea because one can easily hook up aggregated cubes at the corresponding levels in dimensions. Also materialized views construction becomes easier.
I wonder if there's a particular reason why control rows are not being inserted by the mapping generated by the OWB Time Dimension Wizard. I am tempted to create my Date dimension by using Object Editor and then building a mapping, the same way I did for other dimensions. This way control rows will be inserted for all upper hierarchy levels.

I am new with OWB and would need some feedback from you.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.57:Date Dimension In Owb 11g2 - No Control Rows zc

    Hi

Thats right in 11gR2 the time dimension does not have surrogate identifiers and control rows. You can manually build your owb with regular dimension wizard, this is useful for reusing dimension definitions at different levels of time. I think there is a bug logged to let YOU decide in the wizard to have one or the other.

    oracle, change_on_install.
At installation of OWB 11g it doest not ask for any
password also.SYS is a data base user you should have the password for if it is your own homegrown DB, or your DBA will have it.

If you have a problem with authentication with the SYSDBA account, it is not likely an OWB issue. Is it saying invalid username/password? or is it something with the path through which you are trying to invoke SQL*PLUS?

Which SQL*PLUS are you using to do this? I'd try to keep it simple, use your database's SQL*PLUS and try to login as SYS and see what it says from there.

Have 1 ROLAP cube in an AS DB with other MOLAP cubes. The ROLAP cube is derived from a SQL database view and uses dimensions that are also used by the MOLAP cubes. The aggregation storage of the source view is defined as ROLAP. Updates to the Fact table cause the ROLAP cube to refresh while updates to the dimensions do not cause a refresh of the ROLAP cube.

DB:2.53:Getting A Rolap Cube To Refresh When A Dimension Changes sm

There should be no need to reprocess the ROLAP cube when you just process the dimension. As long as you are not deleting records from your dimension table, you should just be doing a processAdd or processUpdate on your dimension. This will leave all your cubes in a queryable state and the proactive caching feature should keep your ROLAP partitions fresh as new facts arrive.

If you have been doing a processFull on your dimension, it will have been clearing out all the cubes that use the dimension in question as a processFull rebuilds the dimension structure from scratch which requires that dependant cubes have their storage structures rebuilt also.

    Hi,

I have created dimensions and cubes with OWB with a rolap implementation. Now I connect to that target db with the BI admin tool. In the physical layer tab I can now import tables, views etc., but not dimensions and cubes and even not the relations between the tables.
So I basically would re-create the cube from its tables and do all the mapping again. This seems to be an error-prone task especially when I think of change management in the future.
How are you accessing the Oracle DWH from BI? Is the re-creation really necessary?
I have seen there is AWM and a plugin to automatically re-create analytic workspaces (wich I don't (intend to) use yet). Is that the only proper way of getting this done?

    Regards,

DB:2.51:Loading An Owb Cube In Bi Admin Tool xj

    Hi,

it took a while to test the export functionality but finally it works fine. I'll add the relevant section from the Oracle docs for te sake of completeness:

Once you deploy objects within Oracle Business Intelligence modules, OBIEE can then use this data to generate reports. OBIEE repositories are represented in the repository data (RPD) format. Warehouse Builder cannot directly store files in the RPD format. Instead, the file is stored in the UDML format, which is later converted to the RPD format. These are the steps involved in moving data from Warehouse Builder to OBIEE:
1.Create an OBI module and derive Warehouse Builder objects into this module.
2.Define the location of the OBI module such that it points to a UDML file on the OBIEE server.
When the object is deployed, the UDML file is transferred to the OBIEE server using ftp or any other method of transfer, as specified while defining the location.
3.At the OBIEE server side, convert the UDML file to an RPD file. To do this, navigate to the following path: OBIEE_HOME\server\Bin and execute the command:
    4.nQUDMLExec -I x.udml -O x.rpd
where x.udml is the file name specified while defining the location of the OBI module, and x.rpd is the target RPD file.
5.The RPD file can now be accessed by the OBIEE server

DB:2.50:Create/Delete Partitions Gets Slower With Every Rolap Partition 13

    Hi

We have a SSAS 2008 cube we use for reporting. It's an existing design so not sure the rationale behind it. For every report a user create we create 2 partitions, 1 MOLAP and 1 ROLAP. A ROLAP partition is only created if the user wants to see live data.
We create these partitions using XMLA from a .Net service.

Now the problem is as the number of ROLAP partitions grow, the CREATE and PROCESS partition gets slower. Essentially every new ROLAP partition hits cube with performance issues. It takes less than a second to create a partition when we start after clean-up
and as we add around 100 ROLAP partitions by the EOD, it starts taking 2 minutes. We don't have very large data sets. The cube size stays around 1 GB and we keep clearing old partitions. Also, adding more MOLAP partitions doesn't make any difference. Only
adding ROLAP patitions hit performance. We are creating separate partitions so we can only process one partition without processing the whole cube.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have already derived other unrelated tables/views to business areas and have setup the security on those for Disco with no problem.

The cubes and dims are defined as ROLAP and there is data in the underlying tables. I have granted SELECT access on the underlying tables to the required users. The dims and cubes have been deployed with the "Deploy All" setting

If I log on as the eul owner into Disco Plus OLAP I can see the dims, cubes, measures and data with no problem, however if I log on with one of the other users I can log on ok (so no issues there) but have no objects to select from.

I think the issue is to do with access not being granted to the new users to the relevant OLAP objects but do not know which ones.

I have stripped back and created the most basic of cubes - a single dimension and single partition.
I have followed exactlythe steps outlined in the MSDN documentation around what is needed for indexed views (the options, the non-nullable columns, the schemas, etc.) and it just processes the ROLAP partition without creating any indexed

Have my aggregation assigned, put some estimated row values in there - tried just about everything.
Why is it so incredibly difficult to get this working? Is there no way to debug this?

    Hi Adam PD,
You have to create aggregation for the partition, otherwise, it will not create the Index view in the Relational Database, I also recommend you refer this white paper alysis Services ROLAP for SQL Server Data Warehouses at this link

    Hello,

How is rapidly changing very large dimensions supported in OWB?
Is it supported directly by the tool or do we have to depend on PL/SQL?
If supported, Is it supported by all versions of OWB from 9.0.3 thru 10g?

    TIA

DB:2.47:Rolap Skip Level Dimension Support - Cwm2? zx

    Dear all

We have a client with an interesting problem. I was wondering if the group could offer any feedback on this design question, where we think it involves a concept called 'skip levels'. The client is using Oracle 9.0.2 with their data mart cube held as ROLAP. Our first thoughts are that what they want to do is better served by using a true OLAP tool such as Oracle Express, or Oracle 9i OLAP, which deals with skip level dimensions easier. Anyway, here's the problem :

"For our warehouse project, we need some dimensions (initially: account, company) that use a skip level hierarchy. This means that the lowest level dimensions are of the same level (G/L account or company) and they need to roll up in a structure of varying levels, before they come together again in a highest level.

Ideally, we would like to use a data structure that can be used transparently by the user and allows for rollups of amounts through the dimension. We would like to be able to populate the dimension through OWB and to query the data using both Crystal reports v9 and BI beans and possibly other tools that recognize the Oracle data warehouse concept.

The two solutions we are aware of are:

    1.Insert Dummy levels:

This is not a nice solution but is will work and it is simple.

2.Insert a helper table that contains the higher level account with all the children (as per Ralph Kimball)

This seems a cumbersome solution but I am sure it would work also. The question is how the Oracle's BI beans and the CWM2 metadata would recognize this and how we can make this transparent to the user.

I am sure there are other solutions to the problem. It seems like the problem would be solved by the next release of Oracle (9.0.3?), which allows us to deal with skip level hierarchies through CWM2 (which I believe this is). The solution we choose should also allow us to easily upgrade to the new skip level hierarchy, which I would expect to be easier to use then the above."

The main thing to bear in mind here is that they want to implement a ROLAP solution, using Oracle 9i tables, dimensions and heirarchies. It also has to work with Oracle Warehouse Builder, take advantage of the CWM2 metadata (if possible) and work with the BI Beans.

Any thoughts on this? Does anyone know how Oracle are going to cater for skip-level dimensions with the next release? Is this through the improved support for the CWM2 metadata standard for ROLAP cubes, or is the customer best of going to the true OLAP 'Analytic Workspace'? If we ignore a MOLAP solution, what's the best way of dealing with this, in such a manner that it's transparent to query tools, and isn't too much of a 'hack'?

    Many thanks in advance,

Is there any way to create a calculated measure in ROLAP cube in OWB (just like in MOLAP cubes)? - or the only way is just to use appropriate sql query?

DB:2.46:How To Determine If Load Using Owb Process Flows Was Success Or Failure 9z

    Hi

I am working on OWB 10gR2.

    1. Created multiple single target mappings.
    2. Created Process Flows to put mappings into logical flow. Each process flow has e-mail generation operation in case
any of the mappings in that process flow fails.
    3. Uses Unix script to call Process Flows accordingly.

Now I am looking for a best way, where at end, I could determine if any of the mappings failed during the load, either using a mapping and process flow or by querying Audit tables in the script.
Once I am able to determine then I would be able to send an e-mail for SUCCESS or FAILURE of the load.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.46:How To Determine If Load Using Owb Process Flows Was Success Or Failure 9z

as i said earlier i dont unerstand why are you using unix but anyways, you might want to try and find if you can do this from wf_process_activities or wf_error tables.
I am not sure if process flow will return you any value if it does then it is pretty straightforward to catch that and assign it to a variable in unix
    if a eq o
    then
mail xxxx -- use your mail command with appropriate params
    end if
if this cant be done then at the end of the the unix program call a small sql which will select the default-result from wf_process_activities table and using this you can determine if the process is failed or succesfull and then send an email.

    select * from owf_mgr.wf_process_activity
    where process_name = 'xxx'
    and instance_label = 'END_ERROR'
    AND DEFAULT_RESULT = 'FAILURE'
    AND INSTANCE_ID IN
    (SELECT MAX(INSTANCE_ID) FROM owf_mgr.wf_process_activity
where process_name = 'xxx')you need to have read access to this table and the owner of the table will be OWF_MGR.

DB:2.46:Import Metadata Cubes And Dimensions 13

I have defined a set of dimensions and cubes using AWM in a 10g r2 database.
I want to import these definitions to OWB 10.2. I use the import wizard and connect to the database and schema where the AW is defined, the cubes and dimensions are not listed in the import wizard for importing. Why is these objects not listed?
Under the tables I can see the aw$ tables of the AWs defined using AWM.

DB:2.46:Import Metadata Cubes And Dimensions 13

I remember reading it's still not possible in OWB current version, but it'll be possible in future releases.

In the OWBRel2 FAQ doc. there's some significant info:

"Is it possible to import OLAP dimensions and cubes built using Analytic Workspace Manager?
There will be no Out of the box functionality to support this. However, there will be an Expert than can be downloaded from the Warehouse Builder exchange on OTN. For more information visit the Exchange website at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/warehouse/htdocs/OWBexchange.html
All utilities posted on the Exchange are not part of any Warehouse Builder production release and are, therefore, not supported

Is the OLAP support consistent with the AWM interface. i.e. if I create a mapping in OWB, can I see / edit it in AWM?
Currently, if OLAP objects are modeled and deployed from OWB, the mappings are not visible within AWM. This will be resolved by the 10.2.0.3 database patchset, which will be out shortly."

Host A has cubes and dimension table created by OWB and some tables is partitioned by OWB and OEM. That is, Oracle DB has several tablespaces and datafiles for these tables.

Host B has same DB SID with HOST A. but Host B doesn't partitioned like as Host A.

Do you know how I can do it?

    Please let know your advise.

    Thank you,

    1) Export object creation script (Tables, etc...) from host A
    2) Edit script created in step 1 and remove partition specification on tables that are partitioned
    3) Export data using Oracle Exp utility from Host A
    4) Run edited script in Host B
    5) Import Data (from step 4) into Host B with oracle imp utility
--- Do not forget to specify option: Ignore=Y
( ignore errors - if object already exists import the data anyway)

    There you go!

    I am stuck !!
Are the cubes saved in the same DB as the relational standard objects ?

I hope that you can give me some help... or provide me with good URLs ...

DB:2.46:Olap Help: How To Query A Table In A Olap Cube k3

To have relational access to olap objects you can define relational views on them, which can be queried with plain sql. You can create such views with AWM in gui like manner as described [url http://www.vlamis.com/Papers/odtug2007-paper1.pdf]here. Regarding a lot of CREATE commands, i don't quite follow, which are you referring to...
Generally speaking, to address olap objects from sql, you'll need to utilize dbms_aw or olap_table or olap_expression (depends, what are you trying to achieve) - i mentioned them in the first post.

    Hi

The situation I am having is that the order of the columns in a dimension table seems to be randomly generated when binding the dimension.

I am using OWB 10.2.0.3.33 and created a dimension using the wizard.
My dimension has no hierarchies and only 1 level. (I deleted the hierarchy after completing the wizard)

In the wizard created the dimension attributes in the order I prefer them.
I expected them to end up in the dimension table in the same order (I use the ROLAP implementation)

However the order of the columns in the table generated by the dimension seems to be random.

I can change their order in the table. But each time I go into the dimension and
choose bind all or auto bind it messes up the order and all my re-ordering work is voided.

Anybody else experiencing this annoying behavior ? Is it a bug?

DB:2.44:Owb 10.2 Design Questions - Olap Objects - Worth Using? Too Buggy? 3s

I am designing a 2 tiered data warehouse. I have a staging schema where numerous staging tables and key mapping tables are kept and a data warehouse schema where I have relationally implemented dimensions and cubes. I want the dw layer to be made up of conformed dimensions and facts as per Kimball.

For the DW layer, my plan was to create cubes and dimensions which would be implemented as ROLAP. I would then selectively create MOLAP cubes for subsets of the data warehouse.

My first question - does this much make sense or should I avoid the logical constructs of dimensions and cubes like the plague and simply build star schemas as Oracle tables directly?

Assuming I can use cubes and dimensions - how do I control the column names for the cube foreign keys? I have one cube with several date dimension foreign keys. Using the cube editor I get nonsensical names like time_dim_key, time_dim_key1, time_dim_key2. I want these to be creation_date_fk, expiration_date_fk, etc so that they are readable. I don't see any way with the cube editor to control this.

Also, please see my other posts about errors with the role concept on dimensions.

And lastly, have any of you had success in deploying a large scale DW with OWB using dimensions and cubes?

DB:2.44:Owb 10.2 Design Questions - Olap Objects - Worth Using? Too Buggy? 3s

Thanks for the reply Scott! Sounds like there is hope for #3 at least until the bug gets fixed.
I really would like to use dimensions and cubes in my dw if I can manage it.

From what you indicate, it appears that I may be able to use dimensions and cubes provided I keep the roles to a minimum. One ugly workaround would be to have several time dimensions each with no more than 4 roles on it.

I'll keep experimenting. I'm under a deadline and soon have to determine whether to punt and implement tables or use the new constructs.

    Thanks for your help!

    hi all

I'm reading the tutorials of Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2: Oracle by Example Series and achive lesson #3 (Designing ETL Data Flow Mappings) which can be found here:
    http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/db/10g/r2/owb/owb10gr2_gs/owb/lesson4/etl-mappings.htm#t1s2

Under subtopic "Design a Mapping Between an External Table and a Cube" we have to create the REL_EXPENSE_MAP mapping that maps an EXPORT_CSV external table to a REL_EXPENSE cube.
On step #4 ("In the Explorer panel, ensure that the Available objects tab is selected. Expand Oracle EXPENSE_WH Cubes. Drag the REL_EXPENSE cube to the canvas") there is the picture that I can not understand: cube 'REL_EXPENSE' has NO attribute with name 'REL_TIME_DAY_CODE' of dimension REL_TIME that we created previously. Later in this section we must create expression object that will arrow to this attribute from it`s 'OUTGR1' node (see "12. Connect the source operator to the target operator as follows: rag a connection line from EXPRESSION.OUTGRP1.EXPENSE_DATE to REL_EXPENSE.REL_EXPENSE.REL_TIME_DAY_CODE").

What is 'REL_EXPENSE.REL_EXPENSE.REL_TIME_DAY_CODE' and how can I add this to REL_TIME dimension ?
Can anyone tell what I've missed ?

    TIA, Paul.

    DB:2.43:Oracle By Example (10g): Where Rel_Expense.Rel_Expense.Rel_Time_Day_Code ? zz

    Hi Paul,

    As far as my understanding.

You dont want to create "REL_EXPENSE.REL_EXPENSE.REL_TIME_DAY_CODE" in the times dimension since the "code" attribute is already present in the time dimension(once you created using time wizard).

Soon after you created the cube by mapping the two dimension "category" and "times" to it, all the attributes in both the dimension will be present in the cube automatically. Other than this you will create a measure column named "Expense" in the cube.

    Hi All,
When we do sysnchornizing cubes from one server to another by using analysis server snych and robocopy methods,do we have to do aggregation again in the cube on the destination server?
Does it loose the storage modes such as ROLAP, MOLAP etc?
    Thanks

DB:2.43:Synchronizing Cubes From One Server To Another zp

    HI Darren,
    Thanks for quick reply..
That is what I wanted to know. So I don't have to do anything with cubes on destinations server after synchronization.
    In the following article, I found this under robocopy method;
    http://sqlcat.com/technicalnotes/archive/2008/03/16/analysis-services-synchronization-best-practices.aspx
Disadvantages of this method include the Synch and robocopy methods do not intermix, and some functionality (such as writeback, ROLAP, real-time updates, and so on) is lost.
ROLAP functionality is lost means, only if the destination server can not connect to the relational data base right?
This methodology is especially effective for query/processing architectures that involve only one database per server.
Why is it a problem? What happens if we have multiple cubes on the same server?
    Thanks

It's strange because we are able to connect to source and target database outside owb. Also, the location test is successful. Any idea why it fails to connect while running process flow only. We tested the db links created by owb. They work as well.

    hi every1,

I am new to oracle and specially to Data Warehousing. I am using OWB 11g on windows XP.
I have created the dimensional for a database, now i am in the implementation phase.

    i have the following questions.

    1. I don't know how and when to create a fact table. I have already created the dimensions (ROLAP).

    2. Do i need to create a mapping for a Cube. if yes, then how to load them from 4 different dimensions. how will be the join condition, they don't match?

    3. I will also try for aggregation, do i need to use MOLAP for the dimensions or ROLAP works?

    Please, give a quick reply.

    DB:2.41:Re: Molap / Rolap On Awm j7

    Hi David,

This could lead into a complicated thread, so I will do my best to try and ist out your options as I see them:

MOLAP vs ROLAP - this initially looks quite easy. If you want to build a MOLAP cube you have to buy the OLAP Option extension. ROLAP cubes fall into two camps - CWM2 ROLAP cubes are MVs with a lot of extra metadata to support query tools accessing cubes using the OLAP API. These types of cubes are not typically accessed using SQL tools but rely on special query tools such as Discoverer for OLAP, BI Beans and Excel Addin for OLAP. This requires the purchase of the OLAP Option.

A third option is relational ROLAP cubes based on a fact table supported by query rewrite dimensions and also implies SQL access to the resulting data, but with no CWM2 metadata which means you cannot access it via a dimensionally aware OLAP query tool such as Discoverer for OLAP, BI Beans, Excel Addin for OLAP. This type of cube is free.

Confused? Hopefully, not. If you are using 10gR2 then you can use the following:

    1) Warehouse Builder - this is free with the 10gR2 Enterprise Edition database and supports the design and deployment of both MOLAP and ROLAP cubes. But you still have to pay extra license fees for the OLAP Option and make sure you do not use the costed options that extend the OWB product such as Enterprise ETL, data quality analysis, ERP/CRM connectors. But importantly the design and deployment of MOLAP/ROLAP cubes and dimensions are part of the free part of OWB.

OWB will also support relational cubes that do not need OLAP metadata.

    2) AWM - this is free once you buy the OLAP Option extension to Enterprise Edition version of the database. It only supports OLAP cubes.
    3) Enterprise Manager - Has some limited UI for creating relational only dimensions and cubes to support query rewrite. However, I am not convinced this actually works very well as I don't think the code supporting this has been updated since 9i. Therefore, certain 10g features are probably missing.

If you are using 11gR1 then you can have the following options:

Query access - once you have built an MOLAP cube you can access the cube directly using SQL via the automatically generated cube view. This view returns an embedded total resultset which keeps the SQL nice and simple as no aggregation operators or GROUP BY statements are required. However, there are only a limited number of tools that can really take advantage of this type of resultset, namely : Business Objects, Cognos, and Oracle BI EE.

The second option is to register the cube as a materialised view, enable query rewrite and simply use the cube as a transparent performance booster for your existing applications.

Both these options require you to purchase the OLAP Option and both are managaed via AWM and both are based around MOLAP cubes. At the moment OWB 11gR1 does not work with OLAP 11gR1. OWB 11gR1 does support the deployment of relational dimensions and cubes to support query rewrite as part of normal database operations, but this does not require the OLAP Option.

    Does that make sense?

Not sure on ROLAP, but if the error is from the TopLink Mapper in JDev then TopLink needs a key for the class for identity purposes. It does not require this to be a primary key constraint on the table. You should be able to just set the primary key in the Descriptor editor, instead of on the table. You could probably also just set it on the table editor in JDev temporally.

    Oracle version 10G (10.2.0.3.0).

I would like to restart the PF1 (after data fix) from the point of failure.

Did any one has any idea for such a scenario ?

    Thank you!

    DB:2.40:Owb Process Flow Restart?? 3d

So, if you have a process flow package with 2 processes, process1 and process2, create a third process called RunAll.

In process RunAll you will first run process1, then connect it to process2 with an transition arrow having the conditon set to Success.

You could also have 2 other transition arrows going from process1 having conditions of Error and Warning (these would go somewhere else besides process2.).

Then, you would merely run process RunAll. If process1 fails, then process2 never runs, since the transition arrows define the path of success, error, and warning.

    Hope this helps!

DB:2.39:Theory Behind Links Between Dimensions And A Cube ka

    Hi!

I've done some simple examples in OWB since now, but now I'm trying to create a bit more complicated cube. I've created dimensions and mappings for them.
Now I hope for some help you :) ().
A dimension (ROLAP) has its own relational DB table that is binded on. Cube (ROLAP) also has the relational table. Dimension has its surrogate primary key, that is referenced by the cube table. My question is: when populating cube table, if nothing is specified, how do the rows in dimension table get linked with RIGHT rows in cube table.

Since my English isn't the best you've heard and you probably have no idea, what I' asking, maybe it's best for me to give an example:
Say you have a cube (and its table) with one measure (one table column), let's say COST (and no date column) and a primary key, which has (among other fields, referenced to dimensions) a field DATE_REF in it. It references the date dimension. Rows in date dimensions have a number type primary key. So, when populating a cube (its table) from a table COSTS, that has COST and DATE in it, know, that COST in a row belongs to specific date in dimension so that DATE_REF field gets populated with the right number value.

If someone even understands what I want to ask I'll be very happy :).

    Thank you all.

    Best regards!

DB:2.39:Theory Behind Links Between Dimensions And A Cube ka

    Hi again!

I have another question, not exactly question about links between dimensions and cubes, but it is similar subject. I'm trying to define dimension with one hierarchy from more than one table. Kind of parent child dimension.

I'd like to describe a concrete example. I have two reference tables (let's say TAB1 and TAB2) and one table, that links records from those tables together. I need 2 columns from each reference tables (KEY1, NAME1, KEY2,NAME2). Key columns in these tables are (I don't know the right expression) 'talking keys' (they mean something to the user). Link table has columns KEY1and KEY2 in it.

When defining attributes for dimension I have ID column (Surrogate identifier), KEY1 and KEY2 (business identifier), CODE (Short description) and NAME (Long description) attributes. I have two levels, each of them with all attributes but one: KEY1/KEY2.

With dimension defined like this,I have to link columns KEY1 and KEY2 when defining the mapping for this dimension. But then, when using dimension in discoverer, I can use hierarchy only on KEY columns, not on the NAME columns. (I cant view data in OWB because of the error in another post: ENT-06965: Creation of BIBeans MetadataManager from OLAP .... has failed. If someone has the solution to this problem too, I would appreciate it very much.)

Can anyone please tell me what I did wrong? How can I define hierarchy on NAME columns or maybe, why don't the NAME columns 'recognize' the hierarchy on KEY columns, since it is the same record, only column is different.

Can I define such dimension with different set of attributes? Do I need CODE attribute for short description or can I use NAME1 and NAME2 attributes for this?

    Thank you in advance!
    BB

Has anyone already taken the class and tell the difference between the class and owb 11g oracle by examples in http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_owb/owb11g_update_extend_knowledge/less1_setting_up/less1_setting_up.html?

If there is not much difference, I woukd like to learn it by myself through Oracle OWB 11g OBE.

    Thanks in advance. WS

    DB:2.39:Difference Between Owb 11g Obe And Owb 10g: Implementation Part I? z8

If you seriously intend to take up OWB as your career path then i would advise you to go to Oracle unversity and attend classes , if you are going to use owb only for a project/small works then use Oracle by example.

Further to this if you company is sponsoring you then take oracle unversity course as "every little helps" and its never too bad to learn something the right way.

Its like making a choice whether to learnmusic form the web(online) or going to a music teacher and learning music. I would prefer the second approach.

    Hi all!

I've created Business Area (and EUL) through Oracle Warehouse Builder (looking at Oracle by Example tutorial Oracle By Example (OBE) - Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2 - Business Intelligence Modeling link: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/10gr2_owb/owb10gr2_gs/owb/lesson7/bi-modeling.htm ). When using Oracle administration edition I can connect and open this business area. I can edit the dimensions and cubes folders in it.
Then I connect top Discoverer Plus with the same user and EUL. In creating new workbook wizard I can select all of my dimensions and measures, but when I click 'Finish' I get the above error. I looked at SQL and for every table in SQL a DB link to the same database where I work at is used. Can anyone tell me, why?

I have only one target module in OWB and that is the same database. Only source data comes from another databases and DB links must be used.

Maybe the DB links are not even the real problem and I did something else wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hi

That is correct, the OWB 10gR2 and 11gR1 releases both generate OLAP 10g style cubes using the AWXML api. AWM 11.1 can create/administer both 10g and 11g styles cubes. Needless to say, it takes a little time to catch up with an ever changing API....plenty of fun stuff to come ;-)

    My OWB version is:

But the screenshots are different than what I am getting on my OWB. Am I using the correct version of Oracle-By-Example?
I have created Mapping Dimension and Mapping Table. Now i want to add a Mapping Key Lookup. But as the screenshots shown in Oracle-By-Example are different, I cannot go further.

    Please help me.

DB:2.38:How To Add New Key Lookup In Mapping ? mm

    Hi Yogini

Here are some steps, it should be fairly straightforward, you can view the online help for more information.

    1. Drag and drop the Key Lookup operator on to the Mapping Editor.
    2. The Lookup wizard opens on the Welcome page. Select Next to move to page 2.
    3. Provide a name and description for the operator, default is KEY_LOOKUP. Hit Next to move to page 3.
    4. On the Groups page, hit Next.
    5. Select attributes to use in key lookup. For example those from the WAREHOUSES table in the OBE you are using that you will lookup in the COUNTRIES table. Shuttle those attrbutes to the right hand side. Hit Next to move to page 4.
    6. Select the COUNTRIES table from the combo box nder 'Select the object which has the lookup result. In the lookup conditions table ensure the matching criteria is set ie . LOCATION_ID from WAREHOUSE matches with LOCATION_ID from COUNTRIES. Hit Next to move to page 5.
    7. Here you can define the strategy for matches, just hit Next, then Finish. You have walked through all pages and are complete.

    Cheers

DB:2.38:Bibdemo Failed After Creating Some New Cubes.... jj

Does the user/schema have the OLAP_USER role? It should. If it has the more powerful OLAP_DBA role, I would recommend revoking it. OLAP_DBA sees all the OLAP Catalog metadata and if it encounters any invalid OLAP Catalog metadata, you will run into errors.

Also, I would suggest that you post this thread on the BI Beans forum. They are the owners of BIBDEMO and should have some further insight.

    Hi Soma,
you should register target database user as target OWB schema in runtime repsoitory -
connect with OWB client to runtime OWB repository and add new user in Global Explorer.
Don't forget enable option "Used as target schema?".

Also please read more info in this thread (created by you ;) "OWB Standalone Target Schema - Split Architecture"

    DB:2.38:Owb And Bo 7a

    Hi,
We have Business Objects (BO) which uses legacy data warehouse in SQL Server.
Our new application is Oracle 10g(SE) based and has it's own BI Application. Vendor has supplied all the OWB Modules, repository, etc.

Eventually I would like to use BO as the BI application.

If the OWB is set for the complete ETL, can BO be linked directly to the Target database/data warehouse?
In this case do I require Dimensions and Cubes?

Since SE has limitations, I won't be able to create Dimensions/Cubes, so is there any possibility that I use only the Mapping and ETL functionality of OWB and ignore Dimensions and Cubes?

    DB:2.38:Owb And Bo 7a

Yes, you can build your own layer as a BO galaxy and connect to the database directly. In some of our projects we only use OWB for ETL and database modelling and BO as frontend, because it is much better than the Oracle Discoverer.

DB:2.37:00957: Duplicate Column Name (Deploying Molap Mapping) xz

    /Oracle and OWB 10g/
I have built a ROLAP cube and this is already running.

Now I have built a small test MOLAP cube with dimensions and I am using very similar dimensions to my ROLAP implementation.
But when deploying the dimension mappings in Control Center, I get the error:

    ORA-06550: PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    ORA-00957: duplicate column name

This happens to each of the three dimension mappings.

Is there something different to ROLAP dimensions or mappings?
Do I need somewhere a column prefix?
I don't know what to check first.

DB:2.37:00957: Duplicate Column Name (Deploying Molap Mapping) xz

    Thank you, but no result.

What I have done in my latest test is, that in the Tab-Attributes I have let the attributes unique. So that there is the DESCRIPTION and all other attributes only once.
But in the Tab-Levels I have added a prefix (f.ex. FLEET_) to the Level Attribute Name(s), so that all names are unique. But this didnt work.

I have created a new dimension.
In the Data-Object-Editor at Tab-Attributes my 3 attributes:
    BUSS_IDBI
    BUSS_CLASS_IDBI
    DESCRIPTION

    (BI = business identifier)

In the Data-Object-Editor at Tab-Levels my 4 levels:
    FLEET
    CLASSIFICATION
    CATEGORY
    SHIP

For each of the 4 levels in the control Level Attributes for level: I tick the checkboxes to assign the attributes to the levels.
These are at least a BUSS_ID and a DESCRIPTION attribute for each level.

So far ok. But I dont see any difference to a ROLAP-dimension. And I dont see either, that a dimensino could be created here in a different way.

What is in MOLAP dimension different to ROLAP?
Or isn't it the dimension the problem, but the mappings?

DB:2.37:Olap Cubes - Awm Vs Owb dc

    Hi everybody
I'm starting a new BI project with 11g. I've used ROLAP in prior projects so I've no experience on multidimensional stores.

If I want to create a MOLAP cube with lots of very complicated calculated measures.... which tool should I use? and how?

should I create a fact_table as a simple table in my OWB to store the detailed data and then create the cube in AWM?
    or
should I build the cube with OWB and then import it in AWM? (don't know if it is possible)

Is there any document about that?
does anybody have experience and would like to give me an advise?

    Thanks a lot. Carolina

DB:2.37:Olap Cubes - Awm Vs Owb dc

If you need a sparse or complex cube, then the database OLAP option which provides AWM is likely to be the better bet. It allows much finer control, and since it is handled as an in-memory workspace it is typically faster for complex stuff.

The general mode of operation seems to be: keep the facts in a permanent warehouse (ROLAP oriented) and use AWM as more of a subject-specific mart (MOLAP) for extreme performance.

You might want to chat about this in the OLAP forum at OLAP

After that what I have to do for successfully loading the data into table.

    Regards,

DB:2.37:Loading Data From Flat File To Table af

    Hi Sanjoy

    You can building a mapping to move the data from somewhere to somewhere else. More specifically;

    1. create a mapping
    2. add external table to mapping
    3. add table to mapping for target (it can be unbound)
    4. map from external table ingroup to target table ingroup (all columns will be mapped)
    5. if target table was unbound right click on target table and click create and bind

This is a basic mapping you can have for this scenario. There is a post here which does something like this, but it will create a File to Table mapping which will use SQLLoader.

I dont think there is a problem with Mapping since when I debug it and do each step, I get correct data in Debug data window.

I read that 10.2.0.3 OWB had this kind of bug and solution is patch no 6695247. Since I m using 10.2.0.1 I m not sure if the same patch is applicable or there is some other patch.

    Kindly assist me.
