    I have Power Edge R710 with PERC6i SAS controller.(Firmware Version 6.3.3.0002).

I had bought 5 SEAGATE 278.88GB ES66 HDD for it.

I had made 1 RAID1 Virtual Drive with 2 Physical Drives and Write Policy=Write Through and Read Policy=No Read Ahead and Disk Cache Policy=Disabled

I installed Rad Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6 andDell OpenManage Server AdministratorVersion 7.0.0.1

I set Abort Check Consistency on Error to Enabled.

I have been testing my Virtual Drive for a week performing Check Consistency test from OMSA on it. (Operating System and programs was running at the test time).

In rarely cases (1 from 10-15) I had Event 2342 The Check Consistency Found inconsistent parity data... an Event 2067 Virtual Disk Check Consistency cancelled in my messages file.

Consistency check performed next show no errors and completed with event 2085 Virtual Disk Check Consistency completed

I deleted my Virtual Drive and made new one from new HDD . And I got the same 2342 Event.

Can anyone explain - is this INPUT/OUTPUT processing On RAID1 where data on physical drives writes one afer another or

may be this is firmware bug or something else.

    2. Then copy to a new directory

I know it's in at least one of the threads - but well buried! 8D

Anyway. We don't have Server docs yet - we're still reviewing the beta versions internally. You can[/b], however, get to the GSX docs from the VMware web site - and those can help quite a bit. See http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/

There is a way to install an OS on a external USB hard disk... using vmware ?

I've trying with windows and Ubuntu. Should be simple:

1- Create a new virtual machine as usual.

2- Use an installation disk image file (for example ubuntu linux)

3- From the menu "Virtual Machine" - "USB", connect the USB Mass storage to be visible for the virtual OS

4- Start the virtual machine, and you'll can select the USB disk as destination disk for the installation, until now all is Ok.

5- When the installer tries to format the USB disk, a error mensaje is showed something like this: "The disk is read only, you cant install or format,..."

This issue happended trying to install Windows or Linux, and I dont know how to make de disk "read-write enable" for the installer.

    Hi all,

    First scenario description:

    VMware 4.1

    SRM 4.1

    RecoverPoint 3.4.1.1

    VM Configuration

    3 virtual disk.

1 datastore per virtual disk (Each disk in a separate datastore, each in diferent LUN)

Snapshot path redirected (workingDir="another datastore (none of the above)"

The snapshot redirection was decided for backup purposes (Avamar). We take Image level backups with CBT enabled (VADP), and we needed enough space to take the snapshots.

Several VMs have they snapshot configuration redirected to this datastore.

    RecoverPoint Configuration

1 Consistency group with all the VM LUNs

1 Consistency group with the destination snapshot datastore

In SRM when configuring Protection Group for this machine, the following error displays in vCenter:

"A general system error ocurred: Datastore used by VM not found among replicated datastores"

wich is certainly not true, because the "snapshots location" datastore it is replicated by RecoverPoint. (Confirmed by EMC Recoverpoint support).

If it were not replicated, I could not choose to protect VM: it doesnt show up in the datastore group selection window. (Tested by me).

    So finally the questions are:

    1) Is there any limitation in SRM about the snapshot redirection ? (i.e. It is not supported by design)

    2) Is it a bug ? Is there a fix or workaround ?

    3) Any suggestions about doing this other way are welcome.

    Thank you very much !

    dpsm

DB:2.86:Srm 4.1 And Vms With Relocated Snapshot Destination 1k

So I see that having a reference in the .vmx file (workingDir="...") is not enough to make that LUN be considered as part of the datastore group, is it ?

Answer: NO, it is not enough. To make the LUN considered as part of the datastore group, you have to have AN ACTIVE SNAPSHOT !!! ... then, you can create a Protection Group for that VM without problem.

When you delete the snapshot, the Protection Group corrupts immeditely.

    Incredible.

So my conclusion is not a good idea to redirect the snapshot location if the VM is going to be protected by SRM.

Some best practices (redirect the snapshot location), are not so in specific contexts.

    Thanks

I have questions about using consistency check on a RAID.

    1. What happen to the server or consistency check when the server need to reboot while it is still doing consistency check?

    2. I am trying to use a switch that will provide log information about what happen to the consistency check and the raid disk when there is an error or something fail. The command line provided by DELL amcli /l only logs the configuration. Is there a command line that will log errors beside looking at the event log in Windows.

Do anyone know what Dell link that has the documentation on how to run consistency check?

    DB:2.83:Consistency Check 3f

After uninstalling Array Manager and installing Storage Management you will no longer be able to schedule consistency checks using the article found here http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=DBFA11C643BEE26CE030A68F27284A07c=usl=ens=biz

You can manually run a consistency check in Storage Management using these instructions http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/OMSS10UG/vdmgmt.html#323112 or if you save the CLI commands below to a batch file than use Windows Task Scheduler they can be run during off peak hours, which is more beneficial.

Instructions on how to run the CLI Commands using Task Scheduler

Go to a command line and run the following command to display the virtual disks and controllers. You do this because in the batch file you will have to specify the controller and virtual disk you would like to scan.

    omreport storage controller
    to display the controller IDs

    omreport storage vdisk controller=ID
to display the IDs for the virtual disks attached to the controller.

Once you have the information above you will next open notepad and save the file to the root of C as cons_check.bat or a similar name. You will need to create one for each virtual disk you would like to check.

Inside the file you will add the necessary commands to check the consistency on the selected virtual disk and controller.

    Example Syntax

For example, to run a check consistency on virtual disk 4 on controller 1, you would enter the text below into the cons_check.bat file and save it.

    omconfig storage vdisk action=checkconsistency controller=1 vdisk=4

Once that is complete you will use the Windows Task Scheduler Wizard to run the batch file during off peak hours.

    1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Add Scheduled Task.

    The Scheduled Task Wizard appears.

    2. Click next and follow the onscreen directions. Click Browse and locate the batch file you created above

NOTE: The minimum recommendation for this task is to be run at least once a month

What is the easiest and cleanest way to increase hard drive space on a Linux virtual machine when LVM is being used?

    DB:2.77:Expanding Linux Virtual Disk zx

    HI ,

Please take the backup priort to increase virtual disk .

This tool is from VMware. It is used for Virtual-disk and VMFS management.

Be aware, always use Virtual Center GUI to create VMFS Volumes. Otherwise you will end up with an unaligned VMFS partition and decreased performance.

vmkfstools VM-Disk and VMFS Management in the console

    vmkfstools -X

    Extend virtual Disk

    vmkfstools -X 12G ./testing.vmdk

To extend an existing Virtual Disk to 12GB. Instead of G you can use M for Megabytes With the same command you can shrink the disk (only for ESX Version prior to 3.0) if you choose a smaller than the present size. Be aware if the shrinked size is smaller as the partition size in the guest there might be a data losse or a corrupted system resulting!

In some cases the shrink command must be issued with the --force option:

    vmkfstools -X 4G ./testing.vmdk --force

For shrinking on ESX 3.0x use the VMWare Converter (download from the VMware Website for freee). Point the source and destination to the same ESX Host.

If you receive an error one parameter was incrorrect the size might be smaller as the original size!

If you have blanks in the file or directoryname, mask the full path with '
    vmkfstools -i

To export or clone a virtual disk from VMFS vmkfstools -i source-file -d diskformat destination-file

    Example:

Copy from one vmfs to another:

    Source=/vmfs/volumes/esxpublic/testvm2.vmdk Destination=/vmfs/volumes/production/testvmnew2.vmdk

    vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/esxpublic/testvm2.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/production/testvmnew2.vmdk

    Export to ext3 partition:

    Source=/vmfs/volumes/esxpublic/testvm2.vmdk Destination=/vmimages/testvm2.vmdk

    vmkfstools -i /vmfs/esxpublic/testvm2.vmdk -d 2gbsparse /vmimages/testvm2.vmdk
    vmkfstools -E

Rename files associated with a specified virtual disk

    vmkfstools -U

Delete Virtualdisk Delete files associated with the specified virtual disk.
    vmkfstools -c 4000M ./file.vmdk

To create a new empty virtual disk

    vmkfstools -c 300G -a lsilogic /vmfs/volume/vmfslabel/directory/newdisk.vmdk

    or in current directory

    vmkfstools -c 300G -a lsilogic ./newdisk.vmdk

This command is very useful because you can use user-friendly names for the disks

Obviously I'm new to issues with VMWare so any help is appreciated.

With currently ~136GB, I guess this is a RAID1 with two 146GB disks? With a P400 controller in place (an E200 might also do) I would go ahead and add another RAID1 set with two disks, create a second datastore on this and then migrate one or more of the VM's over to the new datastore.

From my experience with HP servers, you don't necessarily need to look for a new server, unless you want/need support and plan to upgrade to the latest ESXi version.

It is recommended that you restore a backup of this virtual machine. If you do not have a backup, VMware Fusion can repair the disk, but there is a possibility that the data on the disk may be corrupt and affect the stability of the guest.Do you wish to repair the disk and continue?

When I click it "YES", I then get this message:

If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media.Select Retry to attempt the operation again.Select Cancel to end this session.Select Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

No matter which one I check, there is nothing I can do to make it work. I do not see any backups that I have saved recently as well. I have attached the .tgz log and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi-

The RAID configuration on a recent Poweredge 1750 with
    linux kernel 2.4.26 (megaraid v1.18k Aug 28, 2003)
was created with the BIOS RAID utility, using the
defaults for RAID 1 with the full size of 2 disks.

The top line of the utility reports this version:
    (PERC/CERC BIOS Configuration Utility U812 Dec 04, 2003)
It works fine and is able to check the consistency of the
    array.

The latest dellmgr I could find on the Dell site with this
    top line: PERC/CERC Configuration Utility 5.27 (Feb 14, 2003)
refuses to check the consistency of the same array and
    reports this error:

    > The size of component physical drive is less than size of
    > configured drive. This drive cannot be selected for Check
    > Consistency.

dellmgr version 5.22 and 5.23 report the same error.

Is there a way of checking the consistency of this RAID
configuration without relying on the BIOS utility?

    -----

The details of the RAID configuration follows:

    Logical drive:

    LD=0
    RAID=1
    Size=69880MB
    #Stripes=2
    StrpSz=64KB

    Both drives:

    Device Type=DISK
    Capacity=69878MB
    Vendor ID=MAXTOR
    Revision=DFX1
    SCSI Standard=SCSI-3 (320MB/Sec)

    PERC 4/Di Adapter:

    Fw Ver=412W
    BIOS Ver=H406 (Oct 9 2003)
    DRAM Size=128MB
    Battery present

    Hi all,

Our storage is divided in 2+ consistency groups, composed by 5 LUN each one; if 1 LUN fails, all the LUNs grouped in the same consistency group are migrated to the relative failover group.

On 1 LUN is mapped 1 VMWare Datastore.

We want use VmWare SDRS to manage the Storage on VmWare and the problem is: if we create a VM with 2 Virtual disks, we have no certainly that the Virtual Disk are loaded on the same consistency group.

In SDRS we can specify that 2 Virtual Disk can reside on the same datastore, but not in the same consistency group.

Is there a way to give the "idea" about consistency group to SDRS on VmWare?

    Thank you

DB:2.73:Consistency Check On Boot Up 7j

First make sure that the hard drive is physically sound by testing it with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website or use Seagate's SeaTools For DOS. You will create a bootable CD with the file you download. You will need third-party
burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero, or the free ImgBurn. Burn as an image, not as data.

    http://www.imgburn.com

    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/seatooldreg

    http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=201271 (how-to)

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails any physical tests, replace it.

If the hard drive is good, then you can stop Chkdsk from continually running at startup as follows:

    StartRuncmd [enter]
fsutil dirty query c: (or the relevant drive letter) [enter]

This will tell you whether the drive is dirty or not. Then still in cmd:

chkntfs /x c: (or the relevant drive letter) [enter]

This tells Windows not to check that drive on bootup. Reboot and it should go to the Desktop. Once Windows has loaded, run cmd again and:

chkdsk /f /r c: (or the relevant drive letter) [enter]

Chkdsk will run through all 5 stages. After it is finished, still in cmd:

fsutil dirty query c: (or the relevant drive letter) [enter]

to see that the dirty bit is not set on that drive.

I haven't tried to install the Grub bootloader in the /dev/sdaX partition, but I used another trick to get it woring:

    \- create a 300MB Harddisk0 as a virtual disk \_file_

\- create a 2nd Harddisk on the physical partition you like

\- use manual disk druid mode (e.g. on centos)

\- create, mount and format /boot on the first harddisk

\- do all the other partitions on your physical drive.

    Got the idea?

    DB:2.71:Windows 7 Autock/Check Disk Consistency Error 7p

Autochk is executed under certain specific conditions, but given your statement, the most possible cause will be the disk being flagged as dirty. Under regular conditions, even when you schedule chkdsk on a boot device,a dirty bit for the disk isn't
set for autochk unless the file system itself detects inconsistencies or problems.
If you've allowed the check procedure to continue on every boot and you're still getting recieving the same messages on boot, you should contact your manufacturer and ask for a more in-depth check from their part, given how new the laptop is.

The file can't be copied, linux report input/output error on it, but I want to wait some answers before make check disk

    DB:2.69:Virutal Machine Doesn't Start... fk

    Sethi,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums!

The file Machine name-s153.vmdk is the equivalent of the hard drive in physical computer (VMDK = Virtual Machine DisK). If you delete that file, you'll lose all your work in the virtual machine.

If it states that the file is corrupt, and you are in VMware Workstation 6.5 or higher, you can use VMware-VDiskManager to check the file for errors and try to repair it.

    vmware-vdiskmanager -R EvilOne

DB:2.68:Any Way To Set Virtual Device Node / Scsi Disk Id? kj

Is there any way to set, via PowerCLI, the virtual device node / SCSI disk ID of a specific VM hard disk? We need to pin a large VM's disks to specific controllers and disk IDs to ensure consistency across multiple deployments. Getting them on the specific controller was easy, but I have not been able to find a way to set the disk ID.

    Thanks!

If I use vmkfstools to expand a Linux virtual disk, how do I get Linux to recognize the new space?

    Thanks,

    Tom

DB:2.68:Expanding A Linux Virtual Disk ks

    Hi Kharbin,

Your method is possible and I understand it. The down-side is that when I am done I end up with an unused 1GB partition. If I were going to move the data to the new partition I would not expand a disk, I would define a new disk, define a single partition on it, create the filesystem, move the data, umount the old disk, and mount the new disk. A change to fstab makes it permanent. I would then delete the old disk.

My real question was what is the easiest way for our Sys Admins to give a file system more space? We use LVM on our Lintel systems so they are most familiar with that. Would it be easier/better for them to use some other toolset? It seems that the answer is no. We should define a new disk with VMware then use standard Linux commands to add it to the LVM file system.

This conclusion is location dependent. Other organizations may choose a different methodology.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Hi.

As mentioned by Ross Mistry, you have to give each virtual server at least 1 physical disk in the Cluster Administration.

Here is a list from my cluster, with 4 instances on 4 virtual servers. Besides the Quorum group (including DTC), there are a group per virtual server. I believe I created the groups manually, and the the SQL Server 2005 installation populated the groups with hostname, ip address, physical disks and so on.

    SQLCLU001 --- cluster name

    Groups

    Cluster Group

    Cluster IP Address
    Cluster Name
    Disk Q: --- Physical disk
    MS DTC
    SQLVIR001 --- 1st. virtual server

    SQL IP Address 1 (SQLVIR001)
    SQL Network Name (SQLVIR001)
    SQL Server (INST1)
    SQL Server Agent (INST1)
    SQL Server Fulltext (INST1)

in spite of many fsck -y etc etc ...

    now i have deleted this virtual machine linux , using "delete from the disk" option ;

but .. from when i used this command "delete from the disk" , i can not create new virtual machines , i have this error "a general system error occurred" and even "invalid state" ,

    i can not create new virtual machine , and if i do a "power off" i can not put in "power on" that machine ;

when i click in"events" inside every virtual machine , i get this " a general system error ocurred" as i wrote before ,

    so .. must i restart init.d/mgmt-vmware restart ??

or maybe must i do a physical reboot of the host ?

is it sufficient ? , or maybe the virtual disk is corrupted ?

if it is corrupted , what i must do ??

thanks a lot for attention !

With SCSI device is very simple...

Its good that you have added an additional SAS 5 controller on each server to give you the additional path as this gives you hardware redundancy on the host. At the same time the controller that I was referring in my post is the controller module in the MD3000 array. From your response that things are working, I am sure you have set this up correctly.

Actually I have two partitions in my hard disk. One has Windows Xp and other has Linux. I want to create in Linux a Virtual machine that points to my Windows XP partition in my hard disk. Is this possible or I have to reinstall Windows in the Linux environment ?

DB:2.66:Existing Windows Xp Partition As A Virtual Machine 1s

I have done this and it works very well.

    Key things to do:

    1) use fat32 so you can read/write the windows partition easily from linux

    2) make sure the fat32 partition is mounted read only or not at all when under linux when you are running the windows vm session

    3) create hardware profiles for XP, one for native boot and one for vmware boot; this way it asks you every time you boot what profile to use; and it stops asking for activation and driver change options

    4) **** make sure you don't have grub or lilo set to boot into Linux at boot time without asking for confirmation; since if you boot linux, then start windows in vmware, and windows reboots (crashes or after auto upgrading) then it will try to boot linux and linux and may trash your hard drive!!!!

I boot vmware XP once or twice a week at work to handle MS Word docs I get sent or have to change.

I boot native XP once or twice a month to burn some ITunes music I buy. I haven't quite got it to burn ITunes correctly under VMWare; it always sounds scratchy on the CD. So my install is not 100% I guess.

    Good luck!

    Specifically for linux servers.

    Thank you.

You will need to use Linux clustering software. I do believe Oracle supports RAC on vSphere.

    VM Configuration

1 datastore per virtual disk (Each disk in a separate datastore, each in diferent LUN)

    SRM

1 Datastore Group with the 3 datastores of the virtual machine.

    RecoverPoint Configuration

1 Consistency group with all the VM LUNs

1 Consistency group with the destination snapshot datastore

When you make a failover test it's runs to 50% and then hang when the SRM try to reconfigure the virtual machine.

The process to reconfigure is when SRM modify the vmx file with all the disks paths information and then register the VM in the vCenter.

I work about a month with the EMC support and today i have no answer because EMC says that is Vmware and Vmware say that is the SRA.

    Thank you very much !

With the 300GB datastore and only two VM's (120GB and 90GB) you should have more free disk space than the 5GB you mentioned. That's why I would like to see which files there are in the datastore to determine what can be dons.

It is recommended that you restore a backup of this virtual machine. Who ever invented filenames with spaces will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes ...

do not change filenames - just put the whole path that contains spaces in quotes like

    "C:\program files (x64)\vmware\vmware workstation\vmware-vdiskmanager.exe" -R "D:\DIR WITH SPACES\file with spaces.vmdk"

Suppose I have an existing Linux system, and I need to add a second hard disk which will be an independent disk (this is RHEL 5). What is the best practice for how the new virtual hard disk should be configured in Linux? I need to be able to take snapshots of virtual hard disk 1, which has the Linux OS files, without taking snapshots of virtual hard disk 2, which is used just for data storage. Should Logical Volume Manager be used? What are all the considerations I need to take into account in this scenario?

As I know, there isn't a specific articles.

Maybe in the LVM Howto... and of course it could depends on filesystem type.

For example ext2/3/4 use groups to handle i-nodes and blocks... and a copy of the superblock...

So if you loose a single disk, you can still recover some data in a LVM volume.

    hello,everybody.

My friend borrow me a disk consists of four partitions. the first partition

The partition table on the physical disk has changed since the disk was created. Remove the physical disk from the virtual machine, then add it again.

In the vmware directory, there are files such as Linux.vmx, Linux(2).vmdk,Linux.vmdk,Linux (2)-pt.vmdk,

    I typed the following command line on the shell " vmware-vdiskmanager -x 200GB /opt/vmware-datastore/SynapseClone/SynapseClone.vmdk "

However I received the following errors:

Failed to open the disk '/opt/vmware-datastore/SynapseClone/SynapseClone.vmdk' : You do not have access rights to this file (0x260000000d)

I tried the same vmware-vdiskmanager command for a different virtual machine hard disk yet I still received the same error.

It doesn't make any sense because I set up the VM server hence I should have access rights.

And did you created some? You must run fdisk format in a VM before you can install Win98. You should find this in a documentation to Win98 if you have version which is supposed to be installed on computer without OS.

Well, I hope I didn't give the impression that I (or anyone else) wasn't interested from a VMWare Workstation perspective. However, it really is a Linux thing. If a re-install is not a hardship go ahead and do it but there is a great disk recovery boot CD called Recovery Is Possible: http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/

Yes, the VM is working fine on both machines.

The size of "Windows 7 x64-flat.vmdk" is (from "get info"):

    Old Mac 107.4 GB

    New Mac 106.3 GB

BUT: I did open once the old Mac VM to check its integrity and some automatic tasks were performed before closing it. (The New Mac Vm ...-flat.vmdk size is the one from the b/u of the damaged VM, right after transferring it).

Using the Workstation GUI there doesn't appear to be any problem creating a virtual hard disk for a physical partition on a 12GB disk connected to a regular IDE controller and whose partition table was created by the Windows XP installer. However, if I try to do the same with a 30GB disk that is connected to an ATA-RAID controller (which appears to the Windows XP host as a SCSI controller and disk) and whose partition table was created by linux fdisk, I get an error message:

Failed to retrieve disk partition information for ".\PhysicalDrive2":

    The partition table is invalid

Any clues how to fix this?

I tried moving the 30GB disk from the ATA-RAID controller to the plain IDE controller, and then it worked. Not that I am willing to leave the disk there, but it gives a clue where the problem lies...

    Hi

I'm totally new in both (VMware Linux)

I've been trying to install RedHat9 in an New Virtual VMware machine. After couple of weeks I finally made it!. However, I have two questions:

1- After installing Linux, I can only start it with the boot diskette I made during the installation. If I try to boot without this floppy, VMware crashes!! Is this normal? Can't I boot from the virtual disk?

2- I installed Linux as described, in text mode. Now it starts (with the floppy as mentioned) in text mode. I installed the VMware tools for linux successfully. How do I start the Linux graphics interface? (This might not be a question for this forum, but I'll appreciate the help)

If this information is important, I have a 20GB virtual disk (where I installed Linux) and a second hard disk (which is a physical partition, from which I installed Linux).

I hope now you understand and thanks for the time.

Your welcome however, I understand that had you bothered to READ THE MANUAL in the first place you most likely would not have had so much problem to begin with and if you're still booting the Linux VM from a floppy (image or real) then you still haven't properly installed Linux.

I was running VMware server 2.0 on windows server 2003. I recently decided to install ubuntu on my server. I shutdown my virtual machines and copied the directories to another hard drive, then I installed linux. After installing vmware server 2.0 in ubuntu, I attempted to add my virtual machine to inventory. When I do this, I get the error "hard disk not valid" after the machine is added. It seems to default to ubuntu-000013.vmdk when I try to add the machine. I've tried creating a new virtual machine and adding that file as a new hard disk but I get the same error. I hope I have not lost my virtual machine data. Any ideas, is there a repair I can run on one of these files? The other virtual machines that I copied over seem to work fine. Thanks

I have such a problem by building the session and virtual disk file at VMware Server 2 under Linux (Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 x86) for using it with VMware Server 2 under Windows. I think, I'll solve the problem by editing the vmdk description file (small one):

    old line: encoding="ISO-8859-1"

    new line: encoding="windows-1252"

At first the virtual disk was accepted with the originally created size and no errors in VMware Server 2 under Windows. I hope, there is no dependency of encoding in the "flat" file. I'll check the client session at the next step by booting it soon (takes a little time for copying the 100 GB virtual disk from linux to windows host).

The solution solved the problem, virtual machine from linux is running without problems at windows (XP).

I had a virtual machine running Linux on Server 2012, until I did the following.

I duplicated the directory containing the virtual hard drive, in an attempt to have a backup.

I then swapped the names of the directories and restarted the virtual server and machine.

At that point I got an 'error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine...An attempt to read or update virtual machine configuration filed. ...unspecified error(ox80004005)'.
Now I'm at the point where I can't start the VM with either the original or backup directory.
I've done some searching and think the error has to do with the fact that I've screwed up the certificate for the VM, however I don't know how to correct the problem.
Is there a simple way I can re-certify the virtual hard drive or do I have to start from scratch?

    Hi,

Later the virtual Linux "linux1" crashed, and I deleted the"linux1", then I created a new virtual linux box "linux2", then I added the "vdisk1" asan existing virtual disk for "linux2".

Then both "pvdisplay" and "vgdisplay" can see the Volume group associated with "vdisk1", originally created in "vdisk1", but it is not shown in /dev directory. My question is how to correctly get it back to "linux2" LVM such that my original content on "vdisk1" can be recovered.

    Hello,

If anyone is familiar with the tool IOMeter maybe you can help me figure out what I'm doing/not doing that would cause the error shown below.

On a SUSE Linux VM, I have added a 4GB virtual disk to the configuration. When I run dynamo, the connection is made to a windows vm running IOmeter but the dynamo on linux errors out with the following text:

    Reporting Drive Information...

    Physical Drives (raw devices)...

    dynamo: IOTargetDisk.cpp:1734: off_t getSectorTableLoc() :Assertion `symTable != __Null' failed

    Aborted

How should I prepare the 4GB virtual disk? I have tried several different partition filesystem types using the YAst partition utility but none of them work. Same error. If partitions aren't allowed how do I make this just a raw disk?

    Thanks,

    Jan

DB:2.60:Dynamo With Linux Vm To A Windows Vm Running Iometer c7

I don't know about the error in question, but let me save you some troubles: IOMeter doesn't work reliably in VMs because of the virtualized clock. I had to get absurd values (like 2.6Gb/s on a 2Gbit HBA) before I realized they were due to that. IOMeter can be used as a workload generator, though, as long as you don't make the measurements on IOMeter in a VM. I used esxtop to get reliable values. Just my 2 cents...

    Hi All!

Newbie question here... I previously installed the free VMWare Server 1.0.3 on my old Ubuntu 6.06.1 server and I then installed Ubuntu 6.06.1 ("Ubuntu VM") as a guest OS/virtual machine. All went fine and I was able to get everything I wanted installed/configured in the virtual machine. Now, I got a new Windows 2K3 server. So I want to move the existing "Ubuntu VM" virtual machine to a NEW server (Windows 2K3 host). I copied the entire "Ubuntu VM" folder from the old Ubuntu server to the new Windows 2k3 server. I launch VMWare Server and try to open the virtual machine, I get this error:

"[b]The disk c:\virtual machines\ubuntu_dapper_lamp_server\Ubuntu_Dapper_Lamp_Server.vmdk has one or more internal errors that cannot be fixed. The only option is to restore from a backup copy of this disk.

Cannot open the disk 'c:\virtual machines\ubuntu_dapper_lamp_server\Ubuntu_Dapper_Lamp_Server.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Reason: The specified virtual disk needs repair.[/b]"

I tested and the "Ubuntu VM" runs just fine on the old Ubuntu 6.06.1 server. Is it possible to move virtual machines from a Linux host to a Windows host? Is there something I need to do to "fix" the virtual machine's .vmdk files?

If anyone out there can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

    Cheers,

If you however had any snapshot taken and you think you dont need the snapshot,Removing the snapshot might be a shortcut solution.

    DB:2.60:Workstation 7 Vmware-Vdiskmanager x9

A monolithic file really needs at least as much free space in order to shrink to succeed. I know.. it's a pain.

If you already shrunk it by half and can't get more free disk space, then you could opt for using a workaround.

Create a new virtual disk of the target size you want to have. Boot from a liveCD such as systemrescueCD and clone disk 1 to disk 2... Shut down. Remove disk 1 from the VM. Then boot with the new disk.

When everything is fine, delete disk 1

It's not the easiest, but it does work.

Is this a valid configuration? if not why customer should use 1:1 (VPLEX-RP CGs) configuration?

It can be done but you will get an alignment warning on VPLEX and recoverpoint. I have a customer that have 1 CG on VPLEX and the virtual volumes split in that CG split between 2 recoverpoint CGs. It works but it is not best practise.
