DB:3.91:Photos Shot In Bw Convert To Color 79

I use a Nikon D80 and just set the camera to take the shot in BW ..... not through the use of the post shot effects menu but with the Optimize Image menu setting of Black white. The ca,era does indeed take the BW shot and is displayed in BW in playback on the back of the camera screen.

When I import them into Photoshop Elements 10 then magically convert to color. I don't understand why and do not know how to get them back to BW other than using one of the PSE editing techniques. The same thing happens if I use Picasa 3 --- only there they import as BW but then before my eyes turn into color images.

Can anyone help with this problem? Cause???? Solutions???

If you open the photo in PSE's Camera RAW editor, simply use the "Saturation" slider to eliminate the colour.

DB:3.38:Lightroom Ps Changing Bw Monochrome Images To Color pd

This afternoon I shot several BW images with a Nikon D300 set to monochrome using various colored BW lens filters. When I opened these images in Nikon Capture NX they open as monochrome BW images, which is exactly as they should open. However, when I open these images in either Adobe Lightroom or PS3 they open as color images. I have searched for settings in Lightroom in order to have these BW monochrome images open as BW images which is as they should open, rather than being opened as color images. I need to have these images open in Lightroom and PS CS3 as BW images, which is the way they were shot on the D300 with the monochrome setting. Am I overlooking a setting somewhere in Lightroom and PS CS3?

I have been using LR3 to import and process B W images from a Leica X1. Previously everything was OK, but now after a few seconds of importing photos the program converts all the BW images to colour! Nice if that was what I intended but rather frustrating because I want to process my photos as they were shot, in BW. Any suggestions.

Also, I would venture that Lr (or Photoshop) probably does a much better job at turning you rphotos to BW than the camera - even if it is a Leica.

Just think of the controls that you have in the BW panel in the Dvelop Module. You can adjust the tonality of 8 colors individually. I don't think you have that control in camera.

My Nikon D200 has an exellent color, but it's destoyed by 199$ Lightroom! When I convert my photos in Lightroom and save them with sRGB color space selected, there is absolutely no color change: the color is the same as in Prophoto color space. I don't print my photos at home, and I don't want to have terribly desaturated print from Kodak service. Please, can anybody say how can I get my photos with sRGB colors from Lightroom ? Thank you!

    DB:3.02:I Don't Want Prophoto Color Space! 1f

And I'd hazard it's not the space that's giving you a look you don't want; it's the settings on the photos before you export. They're natively "duller" than say a typical JPEG out of camera, which may bump saturation a bunch, apply a tone curve, and apply some sharpening.

All of these things you can do better than the camera once you learn how, and then save the settings to apply to other images later. You might start by applying a preset from the left hand panel.

On Mac? (I am, so will use those default keys. Adjust as necessary for Windows.) It's been a LOOONG time since I used a Photoshop as old as v6, so hopefully this will make sense.1. Open your greyscale photo2. Press Command-a to select all3. Press Command-c to copy4. Go to WindowChannels, then create a new channel5. Press command-v to paste your greyscale photo into your new channel6. Highlight the channel (click on it in the channel panel) and in the upper-right-corner of the panel, select "channel options" - make sure "Color Indicates Masked Areas." - This way, when the channel is selected (below), what's black in your channel is masked out, and what's white is "clear," allowing things to "show through"7. Press command-I to Invert the channel (after inverting, what was greyscale is now white, and what was white is now black)8. Command-click on the channel in the channel panel to SELECT it, or drag the channel to the dotted-line-circle selection icon at the bottom of the channel panel, to SELECT the WHITE (clear) areas (I just love saying "channel panel")9. Go to LAYERS and make a new LAYER10. FILL the selection with cyanVoila

I use Lightroom 2.5 to manage my photos. There are several things I don't understand regarding embedded color spaces in files.

When I export a file from LR to Photoshop CS4 as a TIF in the Adobe RGB color space the file shows as "Uncalibrated" in the EXIF XMP metadata.

Using PS CS4, if I save a JPG file from the above Adobe RGB TIF file, and then use the edit - convert to profile function, with Destination Space - Adobe RGB selected, toggling the preview check box shows a color shift in the image. If I convert an image to the same color space why is there a color shift?

Is the color profile stored in the EXIF or XMP metadata?

    Jack

DB:2.95:Color Space Problems W/ Files? jc

I can provide some general information on the topic, though I do not use Lightroom so thers may jump in.

Information about color space is contained within the tiff file proper. That is, in a tag (the T in TIFF) and if I am correct it is tag 262 (PhotometricInterpretation). I do not know if LR also puts this info into the metadata.

When you convert a file to jpg you invoke the YCbCr color space and convert your source data into it. That is, the "compression" process also involves a color space change if you did not start out with YCbCr. This could account for the color shift you are seeing.

DB:2.87:1930'S 40'S Family Footage. Best Format For Fcp? as

I apologize in advance for what are probably rudimentary questions...

Short of the long, a family member paid to have a treasure trove of old family films that were shot by my Great Grandfather in the late 1930's and into the early 1960's. They were filmed on 16mm and 8mm, which were transfered to avi's. Some of the earliest stuff was even shot in color!

Anyway, the job of putting these on dvd has been bestowed onto me. Believe me I'm not complaining. But one of the questions I am running into is what would the proper file format be to convert all the digital files into?

Like I said they are avi's. No audio. In Compressor they read like this - Encoded bounds 720x480 Display 640x480 NTSC FR 29.97. There is probably around three hours of film. Pretty much all I'm going to do for this first round of dvds is do some minor editing in FCP such as slow the frame rate, slight color adjustments, add period music, titles, etc., then export to dvdpro.

And speaking of color adjustments, anybody have any experience in color adjusting old bw film? If so I'm all ears.(eyes)

Obviously, I don't want to screw this treasure trove up. It's just that I don't have any experience working with files like these. I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions in how to handle files of this type. Anybody else have experience with doing a project like this?

    Thank you in advance!

DB:2.87:1930'S 40'S Family Footage. Best Format For Fcp? as

I downloaded and have been trying out Streamclip today to learn the interface. What an impressive piece of free software! Incredibly handy and worked like a charm. Thanks for the suggestion!

However, since using both Streamclip and Compressor I am left with a question or two. After reading the previous comments about conversion speed/time regarding streamclip vs compressor, I decided to run a little comparison test myself. My results are by no means scientific. I make no claim for that. All I did was load the same avi into each separate program and hit enter while touching the start button on the stopwatch app on my phone. I didn't run them simultaneously, but one after the other.

The results? Well, I'm not sure. After going through the settings on each program with a fine tooth comb to be sure they were as identical as I could tell, Compressor was faster. The setting that was used on both programs was Apple ProRes 422 (LT), 720 x 480 NTSCDV, bottom field first. Audio was disabled on both.

Again, these are unscientific. More like Mythbusters results...

    Original avi is 2.12gb
Compressor converted to mov in 5:39 with a file size of 1.91gb
Streamclip converted to mov in 6:58 with a file size of 1.94gb

So, I think you might guess my next question. Is the difference in file size, as it pertains to these type of files, something to be concerned about?

I don't mean to start a huge debate or anything, I just find this result pretty interesting. If it matters I'm working on a MBP 2.53 GHz, 4g ram, os 10.5.8 (i know, i should upgrade)

If anyone has any questions about settings, etc., just ask. I'm curious too!

    Thanks!

    Hey guys,

I've recently received Aperture and started playing with it... One of the major things I've notices is that control for making BW Photos and Tones BW photos seems to be a little more functional in Lightroom than in Aperture. Has anyone else found this to be true? If so, how did you get around the (seeming) limitations?

For example, lightroom applies different amounts of color toning to highlights and shadows enabling you to give the photo a much more contrastier look... Also, Aperture only lets you adjust RGB values when converting to BW while lightroom gives you a wider selection of colors to control...

Am I wrong in saying all of the above? Is there something I'm missing about Aperture's color toning and BW shading that I'm missing that puts it even or above Lightroom?

    Thanks,
    Ricardo

DB:2.87:Aperture Vs. Lightroom&Nbsp; -&Nbsp; Black And White And Color Casting 1p

They're different programs with different raw converters, so of course they work differently.

Personally I think both programs have a lot of problems right now. I prefer Lightroom's converter and filesystem, but I prefer Aperture's interface. Neither is at a point yet where I can use it for my professional work.

As for BW work, I personally think both do a very good job, but I've never been partial to the "toned" look.

    Hi there,

I have a very strange problem. After converting pictures to black and white in Lightroom (doesn't matter if I choose BW in the basic menu, set the saturation to 0, set the HSL saturation sliders to 0 or choose a BW preset) my pictures still have some colors in them. Before and after exporting.

The pictures are shot in RAW with either a 550D or a RX100. Same results for all. I use Lightroom 4.3.

I searched a lot on google and also here in the forum and didn't find anything about it.

I've got a newsletter with several small photos in it. They look great on the screen and on my color printer. But when I print the newsletter on my BW laser printer, the photos have a washed out appearance.

I've experimented a bit with converting the photos to grayscale, adjusting brightness and contrast, etc., but my results have been less than gratifying.

What tips are there for optimizing color photos for BW printing?

This is unlikely to have anything to do with the quality of the photographs, but is down to the printing on lightweight non-photo quality paper using a b/w laser printer.

Upon upgrading to Aperture 3 from 2 some of my BW photos have rebelled and taken on color despite the settings in the inspector. One has become purple, another has elements of red. The overall saturation of the image is up, as is vibrancy, but individual color saturations are off, as are the ranges of influence each color modifier has. Until now these images were BW under current settings. After quitting and reopening the application the symptoms continue. What could be the cause?

    DB:2.77:Color Askew 71

Yes, problem persists. The preset I had saved for doing black and white work no longer functions. despite removing all color saturation and increasing the range of influence, either red, green, or purple tones remain in the image. I've read a couple of the threads dealing with color space for printing books. As I understand, photos print best from iPhoto when they are in the sRGB space.

I have done some Photoshop editing on photos I'm preparing for a book, but when I pull up file info in Photoshop, camera data indicates that my photos are in sRGB color space. Also, if I go to Edit-Convert to Color Profile, the Source space is shown as sRGB-IEC61966-2.1.

So I should be good to go. Right?

I have iPhoto set to "point" to my imported photos rather than copy them into the Library. Does this make a difference?

A related question: I have some scanned BW photos that I saved as Photoshop files. They are in Grayscale right now. So therefore, to print them from iPhoto, it's best to save them as JPG and Convert to Color Profile (sRGB-IEC61966-2.1). Correct?

Do you always have to go to Edit-Convert to Color Profile, or does going to Image-Mode do the same thing?

    Thanks,

    DB:2.72:Rgb Color Space pm

    Cynthia:

Unfortunately iPhoto does not read and display all of the EXIF data that's available in a file and Color Space is one that it does not read.

    Hi,

There are two ways to make black and white photos and I am wondering if either is better than the other. They are:

    1. Shot the color shot and have iphoto turn it into a b w shot.

    2. Set the camera, a Canon Rebel XT, to shoot the photo as a B W shot.

I have not had time to test these methods in a methodical way. From what I have seen, when iPhoto converts a color shot into a b W shot, it hasnt looked too impressive. Sort of bland.

On the other hand, using the camera to shoot in b w mode seems to produce more expressive shots.

Is this what others have found? Or is iPhoto better at converting color shots into b w and I am just doing it wrong?

    Hey @CPTag,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I would like to assist you today with resolving the colour print quality issues you're experiencing with your HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer. By the sounds of your post there may be a chance that the printheads that are inside of your printer could be failing. The printheads are what control ink for going on your pages. In this specific printer you have a Black Yellow Printhead and a Cyan Magenta Printhead. Because black printing seems to be fine at this point, you may be experiencing an issue with the Cyan Magenta Printhead. I'm going to run you through some troubleshooting to see if you can fix this issue today, or if a replacement printhead may be needed.

Can I have you start by runningthrough the HP Support document below:

Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer Series

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Okay. So I have a dolly shot following a character walking down the street. I have decided after shooting that I want some objects in color and some in bw. I know how to do this in FCP by using the limit effect. The problem is that some of the colors of the houses as well as the sidewalk and telephone pole are similar enough to the items I want in color that they don't desaturate. I have included a screenshot. I would like the toy in his hand and the broom to be in color and the rest in bw. Can someone please show me how to this? I am working in 1440x1080i in HDV.

    DB:2.67:Need Suggestions!! z8

    Hi-
Put the completely BW clip on V1.
Put the same clip with the broom colored, restricted by your 8-Point Garbage matte on V2.
Put the same clip with the truck colored, restricted by your 8-Point Garbage matte on V3.

    Hope this helps.

You can upload a PDF to the Project Wizards and if you have selected the B W option the pages will be printed B W, or greyscale.

If they look OK or not depends on what they look like in the PDF, and the Proof.

I took some black and white photos in Camera RAW on my canon 350d and imported them into iphoto 6. when i opened them however theyre colour... can someone please explain and advise. should i just take in high res bw or convert raw into bw after.

    DB:2.67:Raw Photo Question mm

My understanding of RAW is: when you take a photo in RAW mode, all the information from the sensor is recorded, whilst information, such as white balance, is tagged data.

I would suggest that if you want to shoot in RAW, you use either Canon's own software or Adobe Raw if you have Photoshop/Photoshop Elements.

iPhoto can import and edit RAW images but it does not have any RAW-specific editing capabilities.

If you have recent versions of Photoshop/Elements, you can import your images directly into iPhoto, and set your preferences in iPhoto: Preferences: Edit Photo: Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements). The Adobe RAW utility should open automatically if you open a RAW file.

My opinion on RAW is that it requires extra work and it isn't necessarily appropriate in every situation. The choice is yours.

As for black and white images, I would shoot in colour - RAW or high quality jpeg - then convert to black and white in an image editing program such as Photoshop/Photoshop Elements.

I work with color images. It would be useful if I could sort color images based on BW contrast in Bridge.

Is there a way to customize Bridge by adding a BW preview filter either through a third party plug-in or a custom script?

The idea is to have the option to view the image thumbnails in color or BW with out altering the orignal image.

DB:2.67:Color Image Sorting Based On Bw Contrast mp

My method to rate color images by contrast is not precise. The color data in the file makes judging contrast acurately tricky. I find judging contrast easier in BW. A dedicated BW worksapce in Bridge would be a great addition.

Being able to quickly produce finished photos is of importance with the majority of my photography work. Therefore I shoot, process, and deliver JPEG files. For this time sensitive workflow there is no benefit to my clients by my shooting RAW. I do want to be able to accommodate any possible future uses of the photos, so I shoot using the Adobe RGB color space. The output for my clients are JPEG images for use on the Web, therefore sRGB. I currently used a wide gamut display (NEC PA302W) with a 24-bit graphics card. (I plan on upgrading to a 30-bit card sometime in the future.)

I've noticed that in Internet Explorer the reds in my finished photos are overly intense on my display. My photos look fine in other web browsers on my display. This situation has me concerned as I do not know exactly why it is happening since my photos have the sRBG color profile embedded and IE supports embedded color profiles. If anything, I would think the reds would be overly intense in other applications that do not support embedded color profiles.

Please let me know if my workflow can be improved, outside of shooting RAW and using a 30-bit display:
Shoot JPEG photos in Adobe RBG color spaceEdit photos in Photoshop using wide gamut display, 24-bitColor Settings: Monitor Color (Monitor RGB - PA302W, calibrated)Save for Web, JPEG, Embed Color Profile, Convert to sRGB

While working in Photoshop the reds appear fine. When saving for the Web and previewing 'Monitor Color' the reds are intense, when previewing 'Internet Standard RGB (No Color Management)' the reds appear fine. The final saved images look fine with the exception of when displayed in IE, which supports embedded color profiles- Color Management.

DB:2.66:Best Way To Configure Photoshop Workflow Settings When Source Photos Are Shot In Adobergb, Edited Using A Wide Gamut Display, And Output To Srgb? 3a

Thank you Noel! It never occurred to me that IE was not aware of my monitor profile. I thought it strange that every other application I used displayed the images correctly, thus I asked the question of what was up.

And I don't dispute that point. I'm pretty sure it would work like you say - Nikon Capture NX does - though it would apply any picture styles such as bw filter simulation, not just do a default conversion.

But as a reminder of the rendering intention, those camera-rendered JPEGs are there in raw files and can be used. The argument could even be extended to other picture styles.

Implied with both Bob and Rob's responses is the assumption that you are disciplined enough to define swatches for all the colors you explicitly use in a document. InDesign doesn't require that you define all colors with swatches just like InDesign doesn't require use of paragraph, character, table, cell, and object styles. Good design discipline does pay off however when you need to do color substitutions, either with spot colors or even other process colors. - Dov

Question when editing thousands of photos. What I'm struggling with is how to use the stamp tool to REMOVE an 'adjustment'. For example, I shot a wedding this weekend, took ~3000 photos. I like to give the bride 9000 photos, each photo in color, B/W, and Sepia respectively.

So I edit all the photos in color, do an export, then go back in and apply monochrome to all of them, do a second export, then go back in and apply a Sepia tone to them, and do my final export.

The question is, how can I remove the Monochrome Mixer and Sepia tone Adjustments in an automated fashion? Stamp tool? Batch tool?

    Any guidance is appreciated!

    Brian

DB:2.65:Remove Adjustment On 1,000'S Of Photos. xm

One suggestion is to use versions and smart albums to really simplify this workflow. Assuming you have all 3000 in one project, select all images and assign a new unique keyword like "jane's wedding". Then

    1. go ahead and do all color adjustments.
    2. select all images, and choose "duplicate versions" and then do it again. You'll now have 3 versions of each image, all color adjusted.
    3. create a new smart album, call it monochrome, and specify matching all conditions, set conditions to match keyword "jane's wedding" and text "Version 2".
    4. create another smart album, call it sepia, and specify matching keyword and text "Version 3".

You could also create a third for "Version 1" being the color adjusted images themselves.

You can now apply monochrome to your version 2 smart album, and sepia to version 3 smart album (and you can use lift and stamp to accomplish this quickly), and you'll end up with three smart albums, each having the desired color, monochrome, or sepia characteristics. You can export each smart album separately, or click on the project and export the entire thing all at once.

DB:2.63:Is There An Easy Way To Convert Original Images To B&Amp;W ? 9a

Little known hint well worth knowing:If you use the menu selection "PhotosAdd Adjustment" or "PhotosAdd Adjustment Preset", the operation is done to all selected images. In addition to what Frank says, you could also apply a BW Adjustment Preset when the files are imported. These adjustments are like any others -- they can be toggled on and off, removed, and adjusted with the settings in the Bricks used. For grayscale, it is well worth the time exploring the included Presets and the slider controls. Afaik, sophisticated grayscale photographers optimize their images in color prior to converting to grayscale.JPG is 8-bit and lossy. RAW is (up to) 16-bit and unconverted (no loss of data, but "lossless" isn't quite right). If the JPG conversion and quality suffices, there is little reason to shoot RAW+JPEG.In essence, you can use the in-camera-created grayscale JPGs, with their fixed and baked-in conversion settings, or you can use Aperture's broad (and time-consuming) grayscale controls. If you do the latter, and settle on a conversion that works for your camera and subject(s), save it as an Adjustment Preset and use it.

    Hi HJ2,

    Thanks again for the reply!

The only other thing I can think of is plugging it directly to a wall outlet. Basically the scanner on the printer pulls a lot of power when it's in use, so even though everything else in your surge protector (including the printer) are working properly, it's possible the scanner still isn't getting all the power it needs to function properly. I would suggest trying the wall outlet, and if there is no change I'd recommend calling HP Tech Support for your area and inquiring what options they have for you.

Thank you for all your time and patience, it's much appreciated
