DB:3.85:Cannot Execute Vix Api Command On A Powered On Virtual Machine - Vcenter p7

I cannot execute any VIX API vmrun command once the Virtual Machine is powered on.

The setup is a vCenter server with a number of esx hosts. I can list all virtual machines, and power the machines on, but once the machine is powered on, every vmrun command fails with the error "Cannot open VM: [datastore] VMname/vmname.vmx, There was an error in communication"

When executing the vmrun 'start' command from a command prompt, the command does start the Virtual Machine, but it does not return control immediately. Instead it hangs for a few minutes before returning with the above error. In other words it appears that as soon as a Virtual Machine is powered on, the vmrun command cannot communicate with the guest VM. When powered off, I am able to run many vmrun commands such as revertToSnapshot, snapshot, etc.

I tried to execute the vmrun command against the specific esx host and this was successful. Unfortunately, this is not a great option as the Virtual Machines could reside on any number of esx hosts.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm hoping for a solution other than placing groups of vm's that I need to control via VIX on a particular esx host.

    Thanks,

Is there an equivalent of vmrun for Fusion? I need to be able to SSH into my mac and turn on and off various virtual machines for testing Oracle in various configurations, so this feature is pretty important to my use of VMWare.

I couldn't find anything similar to vmrun, or any other way to start\stop\suspend a VM from the command-line with Fusion.

    Thanks!

There is currently no vmrun equivalent. Running a VM is pretty easy, you should be able to use "open /path/to/vm/vm.vmx". You could use UI scripting to stop/suspend virtual machines.

I've just moved my VMWare images from Workstation to an ESX server. For automation scripts, I ran a batch file on the host machine nightly that used the commands vmrun stop /vmrun revert /vmrun start..... with ESX, this will no longer work since the concept of a host is no longer..

Has anyone successfully accomplished the automation of reverting a snapshot on an ESX server? If so, can you please share.

I'm assuming that this is possible but that I'm going to have to install some additional tool(s)....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

The process I mentioned can be automated on ESX using cron if you're using regular ESX. It would be the equivalent of windows scheduler. You'll still have to perform the installation yourself, but the other parts can be scheduled.

If you mean you can't connect between your host and your guest, disable TCP Chimney on the host:

Set the DWORD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DisableTaskOffload to "1" in the Registry editor.

I tried connecting by setting the network adapter on virtual machine to Bridged connection but no avail. an error message is shown that

"The network bridge on device VMNet0 is temporarily down because the bridged Ethernet interface is down. The virtual machine may not be able to

communicate with the host or other machines on your network".

Bridged networking depends on an active physical link.

I also configured VMNet0 from the virtual network editor but still it is not working.

    That is the bridged network.

So, if you do not have an active physical network, set the virtual NIC to "host-only". That is a virtual network switch which is available even if you do not have a physical network. Set the guest to use DHCP. If you haven't changed the default setup regarding networking that should work immediately.

    Hello,

I am using VMware server 1.0.1 build 29996 on windows2003 host.

I have several guests (windows2000, windows2003, RHEL3). These guests are working simultaneously in NAT network. Periodically I need to snapshot and revertToSnapshot all of them.

For this purpose I am using vmrun utility.

vmrun snapshot sometimes just hangs and does nothing. Sometimes it fails with following error:

    17066 Broken pipe

vmrun revertToSnapshot sometimes just hangs and does nothing. Sometimes it fails with following error:

    29996 Broken pipe

I have an idea that that happens when snapshot and revertToSnapshot operations are overlapping. For example, vmrun snapshot utility returns 0, but user interface shows that snapshot is in progress, at the same time some job is done and revertToSnapshot takes place.

Could it be due to that reason?

It there a way to configure guest so that it returns from vmrun snapshot or revert when it really has done its job for 100%?

After installing both VMware Player 3.1.0 and VIX 1.9.0 on a Linux (Ubuntu 10.4) host, I'm attempting to start a virtual machine that can continue to run even when the console application isn't visible (headless mode), sort of like how VMware Server does things.

I'm able to do the following:

vmrun -T player start ~/vmware/server1/server1.vmx nogui

This does exactly what I want, but as soon as I invoke "vmplayer" in order to access the console, I can't quit the vmplayer process without my virtual machine being either powered off or suspended--I'd like it to keep running.

I want a way to either:

run a console type application (a la vmware-server-console in VMware Server v1) to connect to the vmx process running my virtual machine; or,

specify that when I "quit" vmplayer, the running virtual machine is to keep on running (as though you could specify something like pref.vmplayer.exit.vmAction = "detach") in the preferences file.

    Any ideas?

DB:3.00:Headless Vmware Player Usage With Vmrun? 1c

Has this changed in any way recently? I get a unrecoverable error: NOT_IMPLEMENTED with a reference to d:/build/ob/bora-324285/bora/apps/vmplayer/win32/playerApp.cpp:2363. It also generates a .log and a .dmp file. I can post these if it helps.

It does however seem to do what it's told because when I start up the machine again it's in the same state instantly. Now if I only could get rid of the error dialog and unneccessary logfiles, I'd be happy.

I am trying to use copyFileFromHostToGuest because I can't get a 3rd party dll running on the guest to recognize a shared directory that I mapped to a WinXP drive letter.

I am able to run executables on the guest, but since I can't get inside that 3rd party dll to debug why it is not finding the input files, I am trying to copy the input files to the guest's C drive. But that seems to be having issues as well...

I believe there needs to be some documentation added to the vix162_vmrun_command.pdf documentation for vmrun explaining the file path mumbo-jumbo on WinXP. I'm trying every variation of slashes I can think of without success.

Also, the error message when it fails is somewhat ambigious. It says "Error: The file name is not valid", however there are two files specified... which one has the problem?! I'm pretty sure that my path to the VM is fine, since I use that same path then I run the executable inside the guest. Also, I'm pretty sure the path to the copy-source is correct, since I can "ls" that path and I get my file. That only leaves the copy-destination as suspect...

I've tried the following variations of copy-destination, with error messages shown:

Yea, you should definitely quote anything that may have spaces. The paths are the actual paths on the system you're trying to access whether that be Windows/Linux.

Does it possible to activate the unity mode with the vmrun command ?

No, vmrun does not provide that functionality. BTW it's... "Is it possible..." not "Does it possible..."!

Since a Virtual Machine cannot enter Unity view until VMware Tools are loaded then technically it cannot startup directly in Unity view. It would be windowed until the user logs into the Desktop and VMware Tools are running.

If you wanted to write a script that always made sure the following options were set in the .vmx configuration file before starting the VM and do not use nogui with vmrun then it will switch to Unity onec logged in and VMware Tools are running. If you do not have a need for the Guest OS to validate a login and instead go right to the Desktop it will then switch to Unity as soon as VMware Tools are running.

    gui.fullScreenAtPowerOn = "FALSE"

    gui.lastPoweredViewMode = "unity"

Currently we have no good mechanism to do this directly. But I am not sure if "Automatically connect new USB devices" in VM settings-USB Controller could be a workaround. You have to manually connect these devices to respective VMs for the first time. Power off the virtual machines with the device connected(Do not disconnect the devices from the virtual machine.). Next time the virtual machine powers on, if the devices are physically available at the same ports, the device should automatically be connected to the vm.

DB:2.95:Need Some Help With Vmrun - Can't Suspend A Vm xs

I only have Server 2.0 on Linux but on there it is quite picky about the format of the vmx argument to vmrun in that it needs to reference the datastore name and the path to the vmx is relative to that, e.g. "(open square bracket)standard(close square bracket) Xp/XP.vmx". Obviously need to ensure double quotes in the right places in the command line to ensure spaces don't break arguments in the vmx parameter. I would have thought though that the error would be along the lines of VM not found.

Obviously the "-T ws" was never going to fly - I use "-T server" on my Linux host.

Please excuse the (open square bracket) and (close square bracket) but whenever I put the actual characters in, they get displayed incorrectly. If anyone knows how I can stop this, please do tell me.

    DB:2.92:Running Vmrun On Linux/Windows With Esx f7

I know VIX 1.6.2 was just released which now supports ESX 3.5u2+ (I believe).

I know there are some blogs floating out there about how to use "vmrun.exe" on Windows to manage your Virtual Machines on ESX. I just installed VIX on both Windows and on our VIMA box. I found that "vmrun" exists on both systems which is great, now I found small discrepancy in running the same exact command on the two hosts and was wondering if I was missing something:

    Windows host execution:

    C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VIXvmrun.exe -T -h esx https://a.b.c.d/sdk -u root -p SOME_PASS list
    Total running VMs: 1
    [san-storage1] TEST-VM/TEST-VM.vmx

    DB:2.92:Running Vmrun On Linux/Windows With Esx f7

Attempt 1: VIMA is 64bit, so I was using the 64bit VIX

Attempt 2: Arch Linux was 32bit, used 32bit VIX

Attempt 3: Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop was also 32bit and used 32bit VIX

I guess I can attempt to download Ubuntu 8.0.4 32bit and I assume this their standard download and give that a try? If not, then I'm out of ideas. If I remove any of the required flags, I get errors so it looks like it's parsing the command in properly but just keeps printing the usage summary.

Update: Ubuntu 8.04.1 32bit does the same thing. Is there something I'm missing? These deve systems are on the same network as the ESX Server, it does not have any firewall/iptables configured. I also pass in the port 443 and no go, though if I pass this exact syntax on a the Windows XP image, then it works like a charm

    Colleagues,

I use VMware Workstation 4.5.2 on Linux-host (Fedora Core 3 with latest updates, kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3).

It is necessary for me to load in the certain order of 15-20 virtual machines. If to use VMware 5.0 is simply. In a cycle the command - vmrun start "/vmware/VM/Win2K3 / $ count/Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.vmx " is caused. Thus each virtual machine is started in own window.

With VMware Workstation 4.5.2 - it is more complex. Start in a cycle of a command vmware-x '/vmware/VM/Win2K3 /$count/Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.vmx ' leads to loading of the first virtual machine. The following virtual machine is not started. The system waits end of work of the previous virtual machine. How to me to make independent loading virtual machines (one virtual machine - one window).

    I ask the help

Automatic bridging does NOT work on hosts with two network cards - or in case where you change between local LAN and WLAN

set vmnet0 to bridged to your local LAN networkcardset vmnet2 to bridged to your WKAN nic

then you can in future simply switch from vmnet0 to vmnet2 in case vmnet0 is not connected

I need help understanding why I can't control a VMware guest from the command line. I'm trying to automate installation of software, doing reboots and reverting to the snapshot when necessary. I'm running VMware Server 1.0.1 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 with a guest running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. The vmrun commands are run on the host and usually work fine but after I reboot, I can no longer control the Windows machine.

    I can start the machine:

    /usr/local/bin/vmrun -h vmhost -u jpfuntne -p secret start "/home/jpfuntne/vmware/Virtual Machines/vmguest/vmguest.vmx"

do some stuff on the Windows system and use vmrun to reboot it once:

    /usr/local/bin/vmrun -h vmhost -u jpfuntne -p secret reset "/home/jpfuntne/vmware/Virtual Machines/vmguest/vmguest.vmx"

but after I reboot it, I can't reboot or stop it anymore:

    /usr/local/bin/vmrun -h vmhost -u jpfuntne -p secret reset "/home/jpfuntne/vmware/Virtual Machines/vmguest/vmguest.vmx"

Error: Command failed: Cannot connect to the virtual machine

The guest system is running fine but I need to do another round of testing with it at some point so I need to control it! "list" shows the guest running and the only way I've found to stop it is to logon to it locally and shut it down. Once I shut it down this way, I can use vmrun to start it again but I don't understand what's wrong. This is a major roadblock to automation!

I think you might be able to use the "net use" command at the beginning of your batch script to map the network drive.

    Just add a line like:

    net use N: computername\sharename password /USER:username

    /code

and then N: will be mapped to the network drive.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to start a virtual machine with the following line, verbatim. It's in a test environment, so I'm not too worried about giving away the password which will obviously be changed before it goes to production:

    "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\vmrun.exe" -T server -h "https://pdc.hq.cesmic.com:8333/sdk" -u "HQ\backup" -p 1234567890 start "[standard] mailbackup/mailbackup.vmx"

DB:2.89:Vmrun Fails With "Unknown Error" On Host Computer But Identical Command Works Remotely xc

    I solved the problem.

Apparently in order for vmrun to work, you must have a DNS server configured in the network interface.

I find this odd for two reasons:

The server in question is also a DNS server, and windows has an implicit setting where if the DNS server section of the interface configuration is left blank, it defaults to loopback. This was the case, and there was no problem with resolution of names in any other application running on the server.

This setting is required even if you're attempting to bypass name lookups and specify the IP address of the server.

Between the awful error reporting and the strange dependency on an explicitly set DNS server when no other app requires this setting, I'd call this a bug. And that makes this a bug report, I guess. Hopefully this will recieve some attention from the VMware devs.

I'm running VMWare workstation 5.5 under Linux. I have a few VMs setup and if I start/stop them with the GUI, all works well.

However, if I attempt to use the command-line vmrun to start/stop them, I get "Error: Command failed: Cannot connect to the virtual machine". Here is an example of the command I'm trying to use:

    /opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmrun start /noncrit/vmware/wakanda/wakanda.vmx

    Things I've tried:

\- setting the VMWARE_BINDIR environment variable

\- making sure there are no lock files

\- putting "msg.autoAnswer = TRUE" in the .vmx (no effect)

\- running "vmrun list" - this works fine and it does accurately list the running VMs, so apparently the vmrun \*does* know how to connect and talk to VMWare.

\- looking in the VM's log file (nothing is written when I try to run with vmrun - I do get the usual log messages when running the VM from the GUI)

\- running vmrun as root or not as root

\- running vmrun when the GUI is up and when it is not up

\- rebooting and running vmrun immediately after the system comes up

\- trying 'vmrun suspend' with the .vmx. THAT WORKS - I can suspend from vmrun, I just can't start! Literally, I can run a vmrun suspend, which succeeds, and then run a vmware start, which gives me the error message.

I know VMWare is working fine on the box - VMs started/stopped/etc. from the GUI work fine. ANY ideas? This is really driving me nuts

    Thanks.

I need to start the machines remotely, then remotely login to them from a new ssh session.

As root/normal user I get the "cannot connect to the virtual machine"

If I do the DISPLAY=:0.0 vmrun start pathto.vm.vmx and a gui is running on the host server, then vmware starts on the host gui.

DB:2.88:To Copy Flles From Virtual Machine To My Machine a1

As I don't know your setup (if your host has a network card and if it is connected or not) I will explain how to do it with the internal VMware network.

Your host should have at least one network card, called VMnet1. That is the virtual host NIC which is part of the isolated "host-only" virtual network. You can verify this by running "ipconfig /all" in a DOS box (on the host command line).

You guest should have a virtual network card (vNIC). If not, add one. Set this one to "host-only". You can do this under the guest hardware options. By doing so you have at least two nodes in this "host-only" network VMnet1: the host and the guest.

Set the guest TCP/IP configuration to use DHCP. By default the VMware DHCP server should be running and serve the VMnet1 network. If your guest receives an IP address of "169.254.x.y" something doesn't work. Verify this with "ipconfig /all", as well.

If both machines have an IP address from the same range (most of the time "192.168.x.y" is used) they can talk to each other (ping). If this works, you can use the IP address for accessing the share (like I described in my previous post).

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points for "Correct" or "Helpful" answers/replies. Thanks!!

    DB:2.87:Vmrun And Shared Folders mx

I have been trying nearly every combination i can come up with, and searching the web (and mostly these forums) for an answer, so I apologize if this is answered somewhere.

I am trying to use virtual machines to run my compilations for automated nightly builds and such. naturally I would have to use vmrun. What I can't seem to get working is using a shared folder to access the source folders. I know this is the problem and not the mechanic I am using to start the compilations because I can copy the source to the VM and use the same process and it works.

    Here is the intended process:

    vmrun start vmx nogui

sleep.bat 240 (batch file for ping -n %1, etc, to wait until the VM comes up well enough)

    echo net use Y: "\\vmware-host\Shared Folders\job_share" /p:no C:\run\run_net.bat

vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass copyFileFromHostToGuest vmx C:\run\run_net.bat C:\run\run_net.bat

vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass runProgramInGuest vmx C:\run\run_net.bat

    echo ant -f Y:\build.xml C:\run\run_ant.bat

vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass copyFileFromHostToGuest vmx C:\run\run_ant.bat C:\run\run_ant.bat

vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass runProgramInGuest vmx C:\run\run_ant.bat

    vmrun stop vmx soft

I have tried using enableSharedFolders and addSharedFolder. Somewhere I read that you needed to map the folder with "net use". I've tried running with -interactive and -activeWindow, reading again somewhere that -interactive uses different processes to enable the shared folders that are already enabled as part of the VMX, but whenever I use -interactive to run the ant batch file, it get the error that the user needs to be logged in interactively.

Technically I could copy the source files to the VM before compiling and that would work. but There are many, many source files so that's impractical. I'm sure there is something that i'm missing, but i'm at a loss as to what. Please help.

    DB:2.87:Vmrun And Shared Folders mx

    thanks for the reply bottkars,

Well, don't i feel stupid. Obviously I know where my repos are via UNC, since I was attempting to map the UNC location to a drive, but i didn't actually try to point the command directly from the UNC path.

To test, I made a test.bat which was this:

    echo "Hellow World!" out.txt

while this works on the host, it did not work when i called this:

vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass runProgramInGuest vmx "\\vmware-host\Shared Folders\repos\test.bat"

The reason it didn't work was that the command prompt in the VM would change the default directory it would run in, since it says that UNC paths are not supported. So it changed it to C:\Windows, which gave me an access denied. This updated batch file did work however:

    echo "Hello World!" "\\vmware-host\Shared Folders\repos\out.txt"

With that, I can clean up the command a bit and point things directly to the UNC paths, but that's much nicer than trying to copy gigs of source code into the VM for compilation!

To answer your question, yes the VM requires a login, which is why i'm providing the user/pass through -gu -gp. Not using auto login. I did not end up needing -interactive or -activewindow.

DB:2.83:Error With Vmrun Start: Cannot Connect To The Virtual Machine zd

    Hi,

I'm trying to run a VM that was a Server v1 VM. I installed the VM Server 2 and everything went smoothly. vmrun upgrade returned alright but reported the same library issues as below.

However when I try to run the VM I get the following error:

There does not appear to be any log output.

I cannot use the WebUI as this machine is behind a headnode so I can't access it via http.

Any help or pointers are appreciated.

You need to use same port number as the web UI, not the port number of the VMware Authentication Daemon. By default, the installer picks 8333.

DB:2.83:Vmware Player 6.0.1: Howto Start From Command Line, E.G. Where Is Vmrun? sj

    Hi,

I installed VMware Player 6.0.1 on openSUSE 3.1 using the serial number that I received with Fusion Professional 6.0.2.

Virtual machines run well if they are started via the GUI but I would like to start them via command line.

Question: How can I start virtual machines from command line? I read that vmrun should do the jobs but I can not find that command.

Did a search over my whole system: no file vmrun can be found.

Any idea, where I get vmrun from?

    Thanks for your help,

    Fred

DB:2.83:Vmrun: Error: The Virtual Machine Is Not Powered On jj

    Hi,

I'm using vmrun in host Windows XP SP3 to automate some tasks but I always get the following error when trying to execute any command except "list" and "start":

c:\gt;vmrun -T ws -gu user -gp pass stop "C:\somevm Error: The virtual machine is not powered on "C:\somevm"

The VM is up and running and executing "vmrun -T ws list" shows that the VM is running, however, trying to execute any other command (even stop...hard) will complain with the error shown bellow.

The problem appears to affect other VMWare versions (server, etc...) because I found the same problem reported by other people (i.e., http://communities.vmware.com/message/1157720;jsessionid=6763DCC1167237C621F6395198A04AFE) .

Does anyone known what is the problem and how can I solve it?

    Thanks in advance,

So, no workaround? It seems to be a timing issue but, well, creating a process to debug VMRun to fix the issue is really an overhead.

Unless you're doing something that explicitly and specifically requires a Loopback Adapter be installed then normally you do not need to install a Loopback Adapter in order to have Network Connectivity between Host and Guest and vice versa.

If the Host is not currently connected to a Physical LAN then do not use Bridged and instead use either NAT or Host-only.

But I get "Unable to connect to host. Do I need to enable ssh? should I be able to brows to https://66.1.1.122/sdk using my web browser?

DB:2.82:If You Use Vmrun On Vmware Workstation, Is It Limited To Your Own Host Only? df

The documentation for vmrun does not clearly state that you can only use vmrun commands against vmware workstation against a local host, but it seems to imply it because it shows no syntax for listing a host address. The stated syntax is "vmrun -T ws ...."

If I try a syntax such as "vmrun -T ws -h https://10.10.10.101/sdk -u user -p pass list" (and that is not my local address), then it still gives me a listing for my own local copy of workstation, not the remote copy.

I would like someone who knows for sure to verify for me that with VMware workstation it is impossible to use vmrun on a remote host, or if it is possible, what is the syntax. I want to be able to talk with both the remote host, and the remote VMs.

If it can't be done with vmrun, can it be done with the perl toolkit, or any other API set. I realize that most of those types of things are geared toward the infrastructure products.

If you're talking about the ability through the Fusion GUI to be able to set one or more Virtual Machines to run at login without having first opened Fusion via the GUI then yes the answer is No however vmrun is a part of Fusion therefore the answer is Yes.

It is very easy to create a script using vmrun and then have that script execute at login and it achieves your goal unless you've not stated all the particulars.

    Let me guess...

You did this through a ssh session (or simply without DISPLAY variable set).

either try the nogui argument (if you are not interested in viewing the console), i.e.

    vmrun start /vmware/volume0/suse103test/suse10-3.vmx nogui

or use 'ssh -X' to enable X11 forwarding, which then popup the console window on your X display.

DB:2.76:Fedora 11 X64 Unable To Stop Vmware Service zm

    Hi,

I am running on Fedora 11 x64, with vmware upgraded to 2.0.2.

Trying to stop the service does not work, I get this message:

    # service vmware stop

    Stopping VMware autostart virtual machines:

    Virtual machines

    Stopping VMware management services:

    VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access

    VMware Server Host Agent

    Stopping VMware services:

    VMware Authentication Daemon

At least one instance of VMware Server is still running.

Please stop all running instances of VMware Server first.

    VMware Authentication Daemon

Previously stopping the service used to work, now it doesn't. I've checked the vmware script in /etc/init.d and realized it's not even attempting to stop any running instances.

    In this block:

    if [ "`echo $BASENAME | sed -ne '/^K ; then

    if [ -x "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun ] ; then

    for i in `pidof vmware-vmx` ; do

    "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun suspend `ps -p $i -f | sed -ne '/vmware/s/.* \(\/.*\.vmx\)/\1/p'` 2 /dev/null

    done

    fi

    fi

the first IF statement doesn't find any instances at all, even though they are running. The sed expression fails and does enter the second IF block.

I modified the sed expression and the script entered the second IF block, where I got this error:

Error: Malformed hostname parameter. For the given service provider, the hostname must be a URL, in the form https://hostname:port/sdk

I checked the vmrun tool and discovered the syntax for stopping the service is different than in the script. The script does obtain the correct pid for the instance and the command issued is:

    /usr/bin/vmrun suspend

At this point I tried a manual stop and got it to work with:

    /usr/bin/vmrun -T server -h https://localhost:8333/sdk -u root -p suspend "[standard] FC6/FC6.vmx"

Does anyone have an explanation as to what is going?

Why does the first IF fail?

Why does the script attempt to stop the instance with an incorrect vmrun command?

Am I missing something? Is "/usr/bin/vmrun suspend " an internal syntax to vmrun?

    Thanks,

    Michael.

DB:2.76:Fedora 11 X64 Unable To Stop Vmware Service zm

    0)

    I do not know what:

    /etc/init.d/vmware stop

does exactly but it does not stop the machines as if you were to stop the host machine. In order to fix whatever it does, as I have already said in a previous post you need to add root user as a vmware user with Administrator privilegies.

    1) So in order to stop vmware service I run:

    /etc/rc2.d/K08vmware stop

but it does not work out of the box in my case.

    Original code is:

    if [ "`echo $BASENAME | sed -ne '/^K ; then

    if [ -x "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun ] ; then

    for i in `pidof vmware-vmx` ; do

    "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun suspend `ps -p $i -f | \

    sed -ne '/vmware/s/.* \(\/.*\.vmx\)/\1/p'` 2gt; /dev/null

    done

    fi

    fi

This does not work for me because the root privileges are not being considered by vmrun or whatever. So I have to define manually some authentication parametres:

    -h https://localhost:3338/sdk -u root -p MYSECRET

Probably in many cases you will have to use 8883 instead of 3338 which it is my custom vmware port. And maybe you need modify localhost.

MYSECRET is the root's password. If you are in ubuntu you might need to set it with:

    sudo passwd root

    2) Another reason why it does not work is because the path to the virtual machine is not correct.

First make sure that authentication does work with /etc/init.d/vmware-mgmt start

    Then run something like:

    vmrun -h https://localhost:3338/sdk -P 3338 -u root -p MYSECRET list

    In my case I get:

    collabtive_debian_32bit/plantilla_debian_32bit.vmx

    3) Now you should test something like this:

    for i in `pidof vmware-vmx` ; do

    echo `ps -p $i -f | \

    sed -ne '/vmware/s/.* \(\/.*\.vmx\)/\1/p'`

    done

This will give the path that default vmware accord to your own running machines.

    In my case I get:

    /maquinas_virtuales/collabtive_debian_32bit/plantilla_debian_32bit.vmx

    4)

If you compare with the vmrun list command, that's wrong, the /maquinas_virtuales is there and it should not be there, and there should be something like before it.

In order to fix this annoying problems I add manually and I run an additional sed script that removes the /maquinas_virtuales/ string so theexact name is called.

So in my case the final code to substitue in vmware gets:

    if [ "`echo $BASENAME | sed -ne '/^K ; then

    if [ -x "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun ] ; then

    for i in `pidof vmware-vmx` ; do

    "$vmdb_answer_BINDIR"/vmrun -h https://localhost:3338/sdk -u root -p MYSECRET suspend "[standard] `ps -p $i -f | \

    sed -ne '/vmware/s/.* \(\/.*\.vmx\)/\1/p' | sed -e 's/\/maquinas_virtuales\///g'`" 2gt; /dev/null

    done

    fi

    fi

    5) A little test to check what I was talking about without harming any virtual machine:

    for i in `pidof vmware-vmx` ; do

    echo /usr/bin/vmrun -h

    https://localhost:3338/sdk -u root -p MYSECRET suspend "[standard] `ps

    -p $i -f | \

    sed -ne '/vmware/s/.* \(\/.*\.vmx\)/\1/p' | sed -e 's/\/maquinas_virtuales\///g'`"

    done

    which outputs for me:

    /usr/bin/vmrun -h https://localhost:3338/sdk -u root -p MYSECRET suspend collabtive_debian_32bit/plantilla_debian_32bit.vmx

As you can see now the virtual machine patch is exactly the same one as the vmrun list one.

Are both host and guest in same workgroup? Or is host member of domain or AD while guest is going to be an workgroup?

Can you find your guest's IP address (winipcfg in Win98/Me guest, ipconfig /all with WinNT/2000/XP guest; it should be X.Y.Z.128, usually 192.168.x.128)?

Then try 'ping X.Y.Z.1'. It should work unless you run some firewall on host - in that case try 'ping X.Y.Z.2', it should work always. Note that MS networking will not work reliably if you block ping, some of implementations use ping for alive checks.

Then try 'telnet X.Y.Z.1 135' (space before IP address and port number). It should connect and then do nothing. You definitely should not get 'Connection refused' or something like that.

Then repeat telnet with port number 139. Again you should connect...

If everything above succeeded, then try Start-Run (again in the guest) and type X.Y.Z.1 into that Run dialog and hit enter (replace X.Y.Z with values you determined before). It should ask you for username password...

If it succeeded too, then simple access by name should work too. And then also network browse should reasonably work...

    Hi all,

I have the following problems on my Vistax64 SP1 Ultimate Host with Windows XP32 bit guest operating systems:

vmrun runprograminguest hangs after I hit enter on the command line. The guest OS is up and running but nothing happens there.

Visual Studio VMWare Debugger plugin will start the VM but stop responding afterwards. I have to kill the devenv.exe process. The guest OS starts fine and continues running.

Drag Drop from my desktop to the guest desktop does not do anything. CutPaste does work though.

VMWare Team will start the first VM, but not the other VMs. Only after I stop the first VM will the others start.

    vmrun vprobeversion hangs

These problems seem related in that something in the communication between the host (vmware.exe) and the guest seems broken. All commands requiring some kind of "answer" from the virtual machine seem to wait forever.

Any idea what I could do?

BTW, I am running all commands on the host from an administrator account, have generally enabled DEP for all processes but excluded most VMWare .exe and have disabled UAC.

    Hello,

My understanding is that vmrun / the ViX API doesn't work with the free edition of ESXi. I have virtual machines stored on a NFS datastore and want to shutdown the VMs remotely to make backups of the vm files (on the NFS server). Is there a way to accomplish this with the free edition of ESXi?

If not, would purchasing "Essentials Kit for 3 hosts" solve this issue? Would I simply have to enter the purchased license key on the ESXi host and the API would be enabled? Do I need to install vCenter Server (whatever that is) or could I continue managing my ESXi hosts with the vSphere Client?

    Thanks!

DB:2.74:Licensing: Vmrun Vix With Esxi jp

If I purchased the Essential kit, could I simply enter the Essential kit license key for the ESXi hosts to enable the ViX API / use vmrun?

    Yes, that should be sufficient.

Can I continue managing my ESXi hosts directly via the vSphere Client when I purchase the Essential kit, or do I have to use the vCenter Server?

Sure. vCenter Server is only needed for centralized management (defining clusters of hosts and whatnot). You can always connect directly to a host (not recommend if you do have vCenter Server managing it, though).

Are there any differences between ESXi free and the Essential kit except that the licensed version adds a few features (e.g. access to APIs)?

I don't know, but some web searching shows this blog post: http://blogs.vmware.com/esxi/2009/06/esxi-vs-esx-a-comparison-of-features.html

It's a little old, so I am not sure it is completely up-to-date. Still, it should give you the gist of the kind of differences.

it is stand alone on a remote network with no VPN it cannot communicate with SQL. In fact it cannot communicate with the host even via IP address. Integration is enabled and working and the Virtual can see the local HD of the host no matter what
the network settings. The virtual needs to be able to communicate with SQL and the host on any network and have Internet access as well. Please help. Thank you.

DB:2.74:Virtual Xp Cannot Communicate With Host Via Network Unless On Office Network Or Vpn So Sql Connection Fails When Remote From Office xc

    Hi,

To get the Virtual PC to share the network with the host machine, you need to set the networking adapter for Virtual PC to Shared
    Networking (NAT).

BTW, is the Windows 7 host joined to a domain? To get a access to the domain environment from a public network or home network, we need to setup VPN to connect to
    the work network.

I seem to be havin an issue with creating a virtual network.

The host is running XP. I have 3 guest OS (server 03, xp, and vista). my goal is to setup a virtual network that is isolated from my physical network. Iam able to creat the network and have all guest OS ping and communicate with each other. My issue is that i dont seem to get internet connectivity due to the fact that the virtual machines are not on the same subnet as my host/physical network. I have tried using both bridged and host only but no no avail. When using bridged i am able to get internet connectivity only if i have the server 2003 guest on same network as my physical/host network..........

Any help will be really appreciated......

    host machine ip = 192.168.15.1xx

    Guest OS (server 03) = 192.68.0.1xx(static)

Guest OS (Vista/XP) = DHCP from server 03

    DB:2.71:Issues With Network Creation ck

Two options to look into for making this work:

    1) Seeing as you have another network existing now (the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet), your default gateway is going to need to know how to route the traffic. Look into adding a route to the 192.168.15.0/24 default gateway that points to your host machine:

    Route 192.168.0.0/24 via 192.168.15.1xx

    2) I have seen issues with the Windows Firewall and a local workstation firewall blocking network traffic coming from inside of a virtual network on my XP and Vista workstations. Disabling the firewall to test would help narrow down the issue. If that is the case, you should look into whatever exceptions are necessary to allow the traffic.

Running the command directly via terminal (the host OS is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) correctly displays that there are 2 virtual machines running.

I've tried multiple variations in attempts to get it to work, but have had no luck.

    What I've tried running:

    $vmStatus = shell_exec( 'vmrun list' );

    $vmStatus = shell_exec( '/usr/bin/vmrun list' );

    $vmStatus = shell_exec( 'sudo -u www-data /usr/bin/vmrun list' );

    $vmStatus = shell_exec( '/usr/bin/vmrun -T ws list' );

The main thing is, it's not that it's returning an error, or not returning at all, but it's literally returning that there are 0 VM's running. If it makes any difference, I'll add that the VM's are started using the nogui argument, but i wouldn't expect that to matter as it still returns 2 VM's running from local terminal.

I knew that vmrun was installed as part of the VMware fusion install. I wanted to use my Mac to script a controlled suspend of VM's running on my ESXi Servers.

It appears that vmrun has no support for communicating with VM's running under anything but the local environment in the Mac compile of vmrun? The "usage" on vmrun seems to indicate the only ws | fusion are acceptable parameters for the -T (type) switch.

The "examples" provided in the usage actually demonstyrate commands running to ESX, but I can't get it to work. If I try to do this I get : Invalid host type 'esx' specified. Since the communications model is essentially identical...I don't see why vmrun on the mac should be any different from the garden variety linux compile.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. Soliciting ideas.

DB:2.69:Vmrun As Provided By Vmware Fusion sd

Actually... I'm not sure if there is a technical misunderstanding here. I have ESX running on "some other server hardware" I simply want to use the vmrun utility to perform commands against my vm's running under my ESX based servers. The version of vmrun that installs with Fusion seems to be a neutered version that only controls Workstation and/or Fusion systems (running on the localhost?). From the vmrun usage:

    AUTHENTICATION-FLAGS

    --------------------

These must appear before the command and any command parameters.

-h hostName (not needed for Fusion)

-P hostPort (not needed for Fusion)

-T hostType (ws|fusion) ------------------------------------------- The only valid Host Types are "ws" or "fusion" ?

-u userName in host OS (not needed for Fusion)

-p password in host OS (not needed for Fusion)

-vp password for encrypted virtual machine

    -gu userName in guest OS

    -gp password in guest OS

The version that installs under Linux gives me this usage:

    AUTHENTICATION-FLAGS

    --------------------

These must appear before the command and any command parameters.

-h hostName (not needed for Workstation)

-P hostPort (not needed for Workstation)

-T hostType (ws|server|server1|fusion|esx|vc|player) ------------------- lots of host types including fusion.

for example, use '-T server' for Server 2.0

    use '-T server1' for Server 1.0

use '-T ws' for VMware Workstation

use '-T ws-shared' for VMware Workstation (shared mode)

use '-T esx' for VMware ESX

use '-T vc' for VMware vCenter Server

-u userName in host OS (not needed for Workstation)

-p password in host OS (not needed for Workstation)

-vp password for encrypted virtual machine

    -gu userName in guest OS

    -gp password in guest OS

But all these host types supposedly support the vix API. So....you wouldn't think that contacting any host type would be different than any other.

Indeed the usage of vmrun on Mac OS X lists EXAMPLES which include sending commands to ESX -- which is exactly what I want to do. When I try to do that.... vmrun says "invalid host type". The issues doesn't seem to be networking related. It's a limit of vmrun that installs with Fusion. I wonder If I can install a version of vmrun on my mac that will accept the "-T esx" type.

DB:2.69:Need Help Understanding Why I Can't Connect To Guest jm

I first posted this in the workstation forum and someone suggested I post here instead so here I am!

    /usr/local/bin/vmrun -h vmhost -u jpfuntne -p secret stop "/home/jpfuntne/vmware/Virtual Machines/vmguest/vmguest.vmx"

I decided to send a command to the remote Windows system to reboot it so we no longer have a need to for a VMware command to cause the system to reboot.

    DB:2.69:Which Product????? 8p

I want to use one physical server to host 3-4 virtual servers. I will need the setup to be able to accomplish the following requirements:

    1. Each virtual server will need to be able to communicate with the other virtual servers.

    2. Remote PC's will need to be able to communicate with each of the virtual servers.

    2. A virtual pc on a remote pc would need to be able to communicate with the virtual servers.

Which VMware application would I need to install on the physical server? VMware Workstation or VMware Server? If one of these will not do the job then what other VMware product will do the job?

    Thanks

    islandtime wrote:

My next hurdle will be to get one of the VM's to see a USB key. An application that will run on one of the pc's requires a USB key to run.

    That shouldn't be difficult.

If that key is USB 2.0, then make sure you plug it in a USB 1.1 port, because VMware Server 1.0.x does not support USB 2.0 devices. If the physical computer does not have USB 1.1 ports in its mainboard, then you may have to put a USB 1.1 hub between the key and the computer's USB port.

Once the key is plugged in and detected by the host OS, you'll just have to unmount it using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in the tray notification area in order to make the USB key available to your virtual machines.

Then, you go to VMware Console and select the VM which needs the USB key. Stop it if it is running. Edit the virtual machine settings to add a new USB controller. Now you just have to go to the menu to activate the device in that virtual machine (VM - Removable devices - USB devices).

DB:2.69:Virtual Machines Communicate With Each Other Between Different Host xa

Is there anyway to have vmware workstation or server host allow communication between guest OS's on a private network will the host connects to a separate network and not using VLANS or creating a trunk port?

Here is the situation, I have 3 vmware workstation 5.5 machines with windows xp as the host that communicate on our company network. I would like to have the virtual machines that are running on all three host be able to communicate but not affect our company network.

I know I can set the VM's as bridged and assign them an IP address range that is not the same as our company network, but I would not be able to do things like dhcp, pxe, etc. It would be nice if I could create a vlan between the three vm host that would allow the virtual machines to communicate on a private network, but I would then have to configure the single network adapter on a trunk port and hope the nic drivers on the host supports vlan taging.

    any ideas would be great.

DB:2.69:Virtual Machines Communicate With Each Other Between Different Host xa

If I understand you correctly, you want only the virtual machines to communicate with each other with no access to the outside/local network....correct?

Configure each virtual machine virtual network adapter for "Custom" networking. "VM" - "Settings" - "Ethernet 1"

Select the virtual switch vmnet2 in the dropdown menu.

You will have to assign each guest OS a static IP

You could only configure each virtual network adapter to "Host-Only" if you want to include communications with the host and vmnet1 (host-only) provides DHCP.

    DB:2.69:Vmrun Reverttosnapshot Failes 3c

After an hour of beating my head against this, I found out that the latest version is known not to work:

On ESX 3.5 the vmrun utility cannot revert to a snapshot. Reverting to a snapshot with the revertToSnapshot command fails in the vmrun utility on ESX hosts. Reverting to a snapshot does work correctly on ESX hosts when programs use the C function VixVM_RevertToSnapshot or equivalent in the Perl or COM API.

DB:2.68:Unable To Connect To The Host - Vmrun On Ubuntu 9z

    Hi,

I'm running vmware server 2.0.2 on Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. When I start the machine up, everything is fine - I can start virtual machines (which I have copied over from my Windows installation) and they seem to workOK.

When I start the machine, I can use vmrun with no problem, e.g.

    lt;codegt;matt@studypc:~$ sudo vmrun -T server -h 'https://192.168.2.250:8333/sdk' -u root -p mypassword list

    Total running VMs: 0

    matt@studypc:~$ vmrun -T server -h 'https://192.168.2.250:8333/sdk' -u matt -p mypassword list

    Total running VMs: 0

    lt;/codegt;

I started a couple of VMs through Firefox with no problems - everything still running fine. Then the console crashed.

If I go to the UI in Firefox, the page is just spinning - nothing is updated. If I try vmrun to see what is running, I get "Error: Unable to connect to the host" (using the same commands I ran earlier, as I've just rerun them).

If I try to stop vmware using "sudo service vmware stop", it says "At least one instance of VMware Server is still running.

Please stop all running instances of VMware Server first."

I can't stop the instance, because vmrun won't connect, and the UI won't let me in.

Any ideas on what might be wrong and how I can fix it?

    TIA,

    Matt

DB:2.68:Error Starting Virtual Machine Using Vmrun xz

I am trying to start a virtual machine using c:\vmrun start (path to machine.vmx). My problem is I get a "Windows - Drive not ready" error from the host machine. I click cancel and my virtual machine starts up. This is a problem because I want to start this machine using a script. Is there a command line switch that will make vmrun ignore errors? Is there a better way to start a virtual machine from a script? I am using workstation 5.0 running on an XP workstation.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

DB:2.68:Error Starting Virtual Machine Using Vmrun xz

I have tried it without including the path to my workstation install in my Environment Variables, the error is persistent.

So the "syntax" I am using in the script is: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmrun start D:\My Virtual Machines\Server1\server1.vmx

When the script kicks off this vmx, Vmware workstation comes up and I get a "Windows - Drive not ready" popup error message from the host machine which requires a response. I click cancel and the virtual machine starts. Has anyone had a similiar issue?

DB:2.68:Vmrun And Virtual Windows Machine Has Pgp Disk Encryption kp

I have a host machine running Windows Vista 64 bit with VMware Workstation 7.1.3. I have a Windows XP virtual machine that has PGP whole disk encryption. When I start this virtual machine I have to enter in my PGP passphrase for the virtual machine to finish the boot process. Is there a way that I can automate this by using vmrun on the command line and pass in the passphrase? If so, how do I accomplish this?

    Thanks,

The only way I can think of is sending keystrokes with AutoIt like this; http://communities.vmware.com/message/1534210#1534210 But you need to know when to inject the keystrokes for this to work in your scenario though. I don't think there exist a brilliant way of determining that with precision. Your only way would thus be by trial error. Not very elegant but at least an option. When I tested this last time, I injected commands into cmd.exe in a XP vm (but should be kind OS independent as it's just about "programatically" shifting the focus to/from the vm before/after sending the keystrokes). For the sake of the test I created 2 tiny apps at the time, one gui and one cmdline, and it worked fine. Based on the sample au3 in the link.

I created a vm in windows, and then moved it to a linux server.

I can start the vm on linux in the VMware Server Console and no problem with that.

But I want to be able to start it with vmrun

but I always get the message:

Error: Command failed: A file was not found

    I've tried things like:

#vmrun start Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.vmx

#vmrun start "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.vmx"

    #vmrun start "Red\ Hat\ Enterprise\ Linux\ 4.vmx"

and also with full path like:

#vmrun start "/vmware/Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4/Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.vmx"

    #vmrun start "/vmware/Red\ Hat\ Enterprise\ Linux\ 4/Red\ Hat\ Enterprise\ Linux\ 4.vmx"

what can I do to start my machine with vmrun?

    anyone?
