    Are you compiling and linking with "-mt" on every CC command line?
    The option is required for multithreaded programs, and must be used consistently.

    DB:3.92:Re: Memory Access Violation Caused In String Class 7m

    My same code runs on HPUX and has the exactly same data to work on like its solaris counterpart. I strongly suspect that the problem lies with the libC version. I am not sure if we need the following patch(just released):

    DB:3.15:Memory Access Violation px

    I have been troubleshooting a memory access
    violation and found the following line of code
    in a function that initializes the OPENFILENAME
    structure:

    OFN%LpStrFileTitle = LOC(gszFileTitle//"*.txt"C)

    Where gszFileTitle is a Global variable.

    code should have been:

    OFN%LpStrFileTitle = NULL

    LOC(gszFileTitle//"*.txt"C) does not produce a
    compiler error, so I assume that a temporary memory
    location is created to hold the string
    gszFileTitle//"*.txt"//ACHAR(0). However, after the
    function returns I assume the address becomes invalid.

    If the paragraph above is correct it would explain
    the memory access violation.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks Steve. The program ran for a couple of years before the memory access violations started to occur.Apparently a minor change in another routinecausedthe fn. GetOpenFileName(OFN) to overwrite a critical memory location. That location was the invalid address retained by OFN%LpStrFileTitle. The OFN structure is alsoGlobal.

    DB:3.02:Access Write Violation 8c

    Hi All.
    Iam using a student version of Visual Studio 2008. When I create an ASP.NET Web project (or any other web project for that matter)I almost immediately get an access write violation as follows;-
    Exception String: Unhandled exception at 0x4ed55b4b in devenv.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0xe1965260.
    Initialising theVS2008 debugger in response to this exception throws another exception and then loads showing the exception source to be a file calledmsize.c.
    I have been running VS 2008 happily on my dev machine for the last few months until a hard-drivefailure caused a catastrophic crash. I subsequently replaced the power supply and installed a brand new 80Gb IDE drive with three partitions, 2 x NFTS (approx
    30 Gig each) and 22 Gig of unallocated space ready for a linux clone install.
    Can anyone shed a little light on the problem please? Thanks in advance.

    DB:3.02:Access Write Violation 8c

    Hi @RPG_61
    Sorry to hear of the issues you are having with Visual Studio.
    Your best bet in this case is to raise an issue via Connect:
    https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Feedback
    It will helpthe teamdealing with the bug if you could capture a crash dump for the crash; there's a useful tool for this here:
    http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/e8649e35-26b1-4e73-b427-c2886a0705f4
    The dump will probably be too big to attach to a connect bug, but mention that you have it in the bug report and the team will set up a drop location for you to upload it to (or you could make the dump publicly available on SkyDrive or similar - but note
    that dumps can in theory contain personally identifiable information depending on what is running at the time of the crash).
    Thanks
    Mark
    PS - if you are planning on doing any WPF or Silverlight development, I would strongly suggest moving to Visual Studio 2010- it has a significantly improved designer for these scenarios when compared to Visual Studio 2008. See

    http://blogs.msdn.com/wpfsldesigner/pages/faq-for-wpf-and-silverlight-designer-in-visual-studio-2010.aspxfor details. The new designer is part of the Visual Studio 2010 Express Editions too, so you can use it for free.

    DB:2.98:Labview Access Violation Handling 98

    Howdy folks,

    I've a bit of a complex question, so stay with me. I'm writing an OpenCL add-on for Labview and am running into a tough issue.

    If the user writes a function that accidentally accesses memory outside of what is defined in either Labview or OpenCL, the OpenCL.dll throws an Access Violation. In C/C++ this causes a program to halt so the issue can be fixed.

    In Labview, an Access Violation causes Labview to shutdown. Is there ANY way to alter this behavior in Labview to throw an error instead of just shutdown? I've got everything else worked out, but this is going to cause a lot of angst with the user.

    I've tried to add Try/Catch in my DLL that Labview calls, but the error isn't happening in my DLL, but the OpenCL.dll, so Try/Catch doesn't work.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Austin

    DB:2.98:Labview Access Violation Handling 98

    Normally LabVIEW does handle exceptions by displaying a dialog box informing the user about the fact and suggesting to please shut down. Not sure if it makes an exception about access violations, which I would consider a valid aproach.

    Also you need to make sure to not set the Debug level in the Call Library Node configuration to None. This will disable all special exception handling around the Call Library Node and invoke the standard Windows exception handler, which depending on the exception and if it is thrown inside kernel context or not, either will cause a crash dump or simply terminate the process silently.

    Is it a memory(or lack thereof) problem?

    DB:2.93:Storm - Ms Outlook -Intellisync-Unknown Error Reported a9

    Hello all,

    I've been doing tech support for the last 2 years with Blackberries mobile broadband's, and have been through this error message more than once.
    Its really annoying, but at the same time very easy to resolve once you manage to know the entry that is causing the sync to stop and fail. The question is; how to locate that entry ?

    Mainly the resolution would be :

    A) Identifying which appliction "Calendar, tasks, memo pads, contacts" is causing the sync to fail."Mainly its either the calendar or the contacts".

    Afterwards, kindly follow the steps in the below article, and it would definitely fix the issue.

    Link: KB01451-How to turn on advanced synchronization logging if a wired synchronization fails

    And, after performing tasks 1, 2 4 "if you're not using Lotus Notes", you would need to:

    1) Go to the Intellisync folder under the C drive "as described earlier", and open the "tif.log" file using notepad. This would open up a list of the whole process between the organizer application on your BB HH your desktop organizer application, in other words it will start by showing the starting contact the sync started with, and the contact where the sync Stopped.

    Here's a sample of a "tif.log" file:

    2) After you open the "tif.log". The last entry "Technical Course/ W Henry's training" as shown above is the corrupted one that is causing the sync process to fail. You can simply write it aside on a notepad to save it, then delete it and the delete the prior entry "Frankie's Birthday" from your desktop application (Ex: Outlook), or from your Blackberry depending on its location, then delete the "tif.log" file. And then sync again, it will be successfull .

    Sometimes, if you have alot of conflicting entries in your contacts/ calendars. After going through the above, you will still get the same error message. So you would need to open the "tif.log" file again and delete the last entry and the one prior, as described above, then delete the file and try to sync again. If you're still getting the same error, then follow the same process"steps 1 2", till you delete all the conflicting entries that come up in the "tif.log" file, afterwards you will be able to sync your PIM data successfully.

    3) After the sync is successful, please perform "task 5" in the BB knowledge base article.

    Hopefully this would be helpful.

    Kind regards,

    Ayyady

    I need to call exported functions from a dll file. All of the functions take an integerby reference so that they can write an error code
    if necessary. I am confusedas to whythis code will compile, but give me an access violation:
    Tried to read or write protected memory when I invoke the method.

    DB:2.93:Sending A Pointer To Unmanaged Dll 3z

    YourC# signature is correct if the dll function expects a pointer to int. No need to use unsafe code. The managed memory is accessible by any function in the same process, including functions from unmanaged code. Either the function tries writing
    somewhere else than the variable you passed by ref, or the parameter is not a pointer to int.

    Hi !

    I'm getting an access violation on the jvm.dll when trying to execute a call from the native side. Well, in fact, the exception is raised when a try to get the method reference, by calling GetMethodId ().

    The _javaClass variable is a class attribute and is correctly initialized since I'm being able to execute other calls.

    Can somebody help me, please ?

    if (javaString == 0) {

    Hi all.
    In my program (C#), i used method Marshal.PtrToStructure to convert object add a memory address to structure in a loop. At the first element, this work normal. But at the second element, the access violation exception occurs.
    The access violation exception only occurs on win 7 (64 bits), it does not occur on win xp (32 bits).
    I don't know cause and solution for it.

    //Access violation exception

    pos.X = oVertext.x;
    pos.Y = oVertext.y;

    Marshal.DestroyStructure(currentVertex, typeof(gpc_vertex));

    currentVertex = (IntPtr)((int)currentVertex.ToInt64() Marshal.SizeOf(oVertext));

    posList.Add(pos);
    }
    }

    Yes, that true, after line:
    currentVertex = (IntPtr)((int)currentVertex.ToInt64() Marshal.SizeOf(oVertext));
    value of currentVertex is invalid. it mean new value of currentVertex is not equal old value size of oVertext.
    However,Iuse .NET Framework 3.5 so class IntPtr dose not havemethod Add().

    Ihave writtena function which asynchronously opens and reads a text file and write the lines into a vector. I am recieving an Access Violation. Why?
    Windows::Foundation::Collections::IVectorPlatform::String^^ FileHandler::readFileReturnVectorWithLines(Platform::String^ filename)
    {
    Windows::Foundation::Collections::IVectorPlatform::String^^ vector_of_lines;
    Windows::ApplicationModel::Package^ package = Windows::ApplicationModel::Package::Current;
    Windows::Storage::StorageFolder^ installedLocation = package-InstalledLocation;
    create_task(installedLocation-GetFileAsync(filename)).then([vector_of_lines](Windows::Storage::StorageFile^ file)
    {
    return FileIO::ReadLinesAsync(file);
    }).then([vector_of_lines](Windows::Foundation::Collections::IVectorPlatform::String^^ lines)
    {
    // The following line produces an access violation!
    vector_of_lines = lines;
    });
    return vector_of_lines;
    }

    DB:2.84:Readlinesasync( ) Produces Access Violation aj

    Okay i found out that the Problem lies somewhere else. Here is aBasic example that shows the error. In the class FileHandler,I have a function that creates a Task and returns it:
    taskint FileHandler::getIntAsync(void)
    {
    taskint t([]()
    {
    return 123;
    });

    return t;
    }
    Now, i execute this function from inside the main app class:
    auto getIntTask = FileHandler::getIntAsync();
    int i = getIntTask.get(); //This line throws the error
    The resulting error is:
    An invalid parameter was passed to a function that considers invalid parameters fatal.

    Musicmatch crashes when I connect my DJ 30 to my Dimension 8400. Both are brand-new. OS is WinXP Pro, fully updated with service packs, security updates, etc. CD/DVD software preinstalled by Dell is Sonic.

    Sequence of operations: Boot PC. Launch Musicmatch. Briefly browse library to verify it's working. Attach DJ using USB cable. Musicmatch briefly (for less than a second) displays a large message box that seems to have something to do with "remote devices" and may mention the word "wizard" but it goes away too quickly to be read. Then Musicmatch displays a message that it has encountered an error and must shut down.

    I have uninstalled and reinstalled Musicmatch twice, and the problem does not go away. Dell has no other useful suggestions.

    I have uninstalled all unwanted software that Dell preinstalled (AOL, NetZero, WordPerfect, etc.)

    I cannot even get online help from Musicmatch, because the Musicmatch online help page reports an error when attempting to send diagnostic data to Musicmatch. ("We have encountered an error while gathering system information.")

    Darned if I know what this means or what to do.

    Here isthe beginning section of an error in Musicmatch's logfileERRORLOG.TXT which occurs manytimes:

    When uninitializing a thread and/or shutting down my application I sometimes get an access violation at "crtexe.c method __tmainCRTStartup()... if(has_cctor == 0) _cexit();".The call stack only shows dlls, where tbbmalloc.dll is closes to the top.I guess this occurs when the tbb allocator deallocates the memory pool for that specific thread. Question is what could cause this, and how can I go about debugging it?

    Could you please send call stacks for all threads? Sure, the reproducer would be the best.

    DB:2.77:Area Of Executable Missing From Memory After Loading 93

    Hello, we are seeing a very intermittent and rare native program termination with an access violation exception on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit. Our application was written in C and compiled with MSVC 2008 SP1 using the 64-bit compiler.
    We are seeing this access violation exception on program start-up during global /static construction. This is what I had found so far in my debugging adventure:

    I had compared the RAW DATA#1 (From Section Header #1) hex data that I obtained from the output of dumpbin to the virtual memory of the failed application instance using Windbg. I had found an area of memory which is different from the output of dumpbin.
    This area of memory is fill with zeros as if some process had cleared it. This was causing the access violation exception because the instruction pointer was reading and executing an zeroed out memory area. The output of dumpbin says section
    #1 starts at the address 0000000140001000 and ends at 000000014029DA6F. Looking at the process (virtual) memory of the failed application instance, section #1 loads at 0x0000000140001000 and continues fine up until 0x000000014002000 (matches dumpbin's
    ouput). However, the process memory location 0x0000000140002000 to 0x000000014000a000 is all zeros. Continuing on, from 0x000000014000a000 to the end of section #1 the memory matches dumpbin's output.

    When I run the application again, it works fine. I am unable to reproduce this failure when I run the application in a huge for loop. We had seen this failure on other Windows machines here as well, and so it is unlikely that we have a faulty machine.
    I had a few ideas but none really explains what caused a whole section of the executable to be missing or zeroed out from memory in what appeared to be during the loading of the executable into memory. What additional diagnostics/debugging can I perform
    to find the cause?

    My team is seeing a problem with an application whose purpose is to display documents. The problem has been occurring ever since the aplication begain displaying PDFs (the PDFs are Adobe Acrobat PDFs). Specifically, there is an access violation. In troubleshooting the problem, we were able to produce the following error message:

    "the assembly instruction at AcroPDF+a825 in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF.dll from Adobe Systems, Inc. has caused an unknown exception (0xc000001d) on thread 5"

    Can anyone offer any insight as to any avenues we could take towards overcoming this access violation?

    The application in question is an exe called by a DLL. The DLL is a component is an exe whose purpose is to retrieve and display documents.

    I have uploaded the logs and analysis files that we have produced with the Microsoft Debug Diagnostics application. They can be found at my "Stuff" tab. We have collected the information for 2 instances of the access violation. "Crash 1" is the original access violation. "Crash 2" is the access violation that occurred with fnnavgtr.ocx removed (we have determined that this component is associated with the cause). The data dumps were too big to upload. My thanks for whatever insight can be offered.

    I keep getting this notice: "Memory Access Violation in module kernel32.

    Every time I boot the computer or when I try to open my Norton SystemWorks or Norton's Personel Firewall.

    As a result, I cannot open any of my Norton software but Explorer will open after I close the Memory Access window. I am running Win.98se. I ran Scandisk, Disk Cleanupand Disk Defragmenter yesterday but that didn't help.

    What is this Memory Access Violation notice and how do I repair the problem? Thanks, Frankm

    DB:2.76:Re: Segmentation - Access Violation k1

    I'm experiencing this problem as well, but only when I run in compiled mode.
    The exact message is "Trace caused by a segmentation or access violation in the
    Forte executable:" When this happens, the server partition fails and is
    rendered "off-line."

    I don't have any problems when I deploy and run in interpreted mode. It works
    perfectly; I don't even get an exception.

    I tested this on a couple different servers using the same test data and
    database, and the results are always the same. It works when deployed in
    interpreted mode, and fails when deployed in compiled mode.

    Specifics:

    Clients - WINDOWS 3.1 and WINDOWS NT
    Servers - RS/6000 AIX
    Databases - SYBASE and DB2/6000
    Forte - 2.0.E.2

    It sounds like a bug in Forte to me as well. If it works in the development
    environment and then works when deployed in interpreted mode, it should work
    when we deploy in compiled mode. Maybe my expectations are too high... I
    have contacted tech support.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi,

    Segmentation Fault/Access Violation pbs are usually due to invalid/incorrect
    access in memory, most
    often due to stale pointer (nil pointer or invalid address in pointer)...so
    Ravi, the problem that you're
    encountering looks like a FORTE bug to me and should be reported to FORTE
    Tech Support in
    my opinion with a reproducible case preferably...Memory constraint should
    not raise such an error.

    Hi Ravi,

    Looks like you have a memory constraint problem there. Why don't you use
    the fm flag to increase the memory that FORTE uses.

    It goes like this :

    -fm (n:16000,x:32000)

    This should solve your problem.

    ----------

    Hi,
    When we run a distributed multi-tasking application, we are experiencing a
    problem of a system error 'Segmetntation/access violation...'.

    Whenever a file is created on the server, the application starts up a new
    task asynchronously. Each task reads a file, processes and updates the
    Sybase table(s). We use Lock() and Unlock() methods in our application.
    The application commits after processing every 1000 records. So, whenever
    the application fails, we restart the process from the last commited record.
    If the file size is small, there will not be any problems, but if the file
    size is big (i.e.2MB), the application fails after processing a couple of
    thousands of records with the Segmentation/access violation error.

    Any one has experienced the above problem?
    Thank you very much for your help in advance.

    My program sometimes crash with the following error:
    Access violation executing location 0x00000010
    or Access violation writing location 0x0000000X
    The problem is caused by: the bsp/edx register value changed to 0x00000010.
    I have tried using gflags to enable some heap check, but no luck.
    I have tried Microsoft Application Verifier. Nothing changed.

    I'm using a debug build.

    I can reproduce it now. But I don't know what caused this.
    The crash is not happened at a fixed time or fixed location.

    DB:2.76:Access Violation Executing Location 0x00000010 kd

    When Access violation writing location, the stack is right but there's no fault of the code, the problem is caused by memory fault.
    At least in that case you should have a stack trace.
    And the location changes every time. I'm using a debug build.
    That's bad. Even a release build should catch some cases of stack corruption due to /GS. Debug builds even more so.
    This could really be a case of passing a local variable address to a asynchronous function, that could explain the change of the crash location and the fact that /GS or other debug checks can't catch it.

    I am getting 'Microsoft C++ exception: _com_error at memory location ...' errors when loading Crystal Reports in debug mode.
    I've been working on this project for some time and never had this problem before. The error affects all Crytal Reports in the same project.
    The error occurs every time any report is loaded.
    When debugging is stopped further first-chance exceptions are thrown: the first being 'The string binding is invalid' followed by access violation exceptions.

    Anybody seen this before?

    DB:2.76:_Com_Error Exception 3c

    Xun, thanks for your reply.

    I wish I was able to provide any meaningful code for this, as it affected every report in the project.
    I have been able to recover from this but only by restoring a backup.

    The report I was working on was imported originally from another project but the data structure and field names were the same. However, the dataset name was different, a point I'd overlooked (when importing) as the report had been working fine in this project up to this point.
    It was only after I had tried changing the data source to some of the fields (not all) that the problem occured. The 'Set Data Source' dialog was actually showing two datasets, the current one plus the inherited (non existant) one.
    I'm pretty sure this is what caused the problem. So I think we can say this was 'pilot error'.

    The worry is that it affected every other report in the project, even newly created ones! No errors were thrown up in the designer or in the build. There may have been another way to get round this but it was quicker to restore the backup (from the previous day).

    So I offer this as 'a word to the wise' and 'note to self' - check the data source in future.

    HI guys,

    I have this following code using JDBC to access Oracle8i. The problem is, when I run it, it crashes and gives me "memory violation error".

    import java.sql.*;
    import java.io;

    public class JdbcConnect {

    public static void main(String[] args) throws SQLException, IOException
    {

    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());

    String user;
    String password;
    String url;

    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection ("jdbc:oracle:oci8:@Oracle", "system", "manager");

    conn.close();
    }
    }

    Can somebody please help me out here?

    DB:2.75:Error With Jdbc 9s

    Here is my code to connect to the database I have created in Oracle 8i Lite:

    public static void main (String args[]) {
    String URL = "jdbc:odbc:FirstTry";
    String username = "System";
    String password = "";

    try {
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Failed to load JDBC/ODBC driver.");
    return;
    }

    Statement stmt = null;
    Connection con=null;
    try {
    con = DriverManager.getConnection (
    URL,
    username,
    password);
    stmt = con.createStatement();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("problems connecting to "+URL);
    }

    You don't need a "new" method every time, and you do need to set your datasource in Control Panel. There is a lot of help over at the Java Developer Connection, which is where I got the template for the above code (which works, by the way). http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/Database/JDBCShortCourse/jdbc/jdbc.html Go to this site for more info. Hello,

    Without profiling the VI works on the MCB2400. And profiling also works if I try very simple examples.

    DB:2.74:Profile Error: Memory Access Violation (Data Fetch) 98

    Hi amin,

    You most likely cannot edit the call library node because you are looking at the clone of the VI (because it is reentrant). If you press ctrl+M to switch to edit-mode, you should be able to edit the CLN as described above.

    The second issue appears to be directly related to profiling, and I'm currently looking into the issue. It is related to debugging being disabled in the VI settings of the standard deviation VI (or any other AAL VI for that matter). To work around this issue, simply make sure debugging is enabled for all of your VIs. This can be done very similar to disabling reentract execution of the VI (as described in the previous solution), just check the box that reads "Allow debugging".

    We cannot know. Binary access errors could be anything from damged files to permission issues to security tools on your system to missing DLLs. Could even be an issue with the SATA driver of your harddrive... Utterly outside Adobe at this point. Check the Windows Event Viewer for the specific cause. also download the packages again using a different method/ different browser in case they may be damaged...

    This looks like a non issue. Here is what I did to reproduce the issue: 1)I setup a separate website on my server that contained one page that simply exported a pdf report with a press of a button. I brought up two browsers, logged in anonymously to that site. I started the the exports at roughly the same time. The report I created listed several fields out of the db table and would run for about one minute. For the setup described above the reports both finished processing at just about the same time. I tried the same using windows authentication and had the same results. 2) I moved the single web page to my main website, then opened two browsers to the site logged in as my windows user. While my report was exporting in one browser, I could not get to the database with the other browser. Once the report finished, the second browser came up with data immediately.3) I changed the test web page by removing the report export code and adding code to bring back the same records into a dataset. I was able to duplicate the problem this way as well. This took Crystal out of the picture. 4) I created a new windows user on my server and set it up in the development database. I opened one browser with my login and a second browser with the new login. While loading the dataset with the first browser, I did not have any problem accessing the database table with the browser connected as the new user. 5) Finally, I decided to try using the second browser from a remote location. This time I logged both browsers in as my user, but one browser was on a different client. While loading the dataset with one browser the other browser did not have a problem accessing the Account Detail. 6) It appears that when working on a single box with mulitiple browsers logged in as the same user, IIS(?) limits the amount of access as if there was only one instance. So far, I have found no documentation for this, but will include it when I do.

    As it stands this does not appear to be a critical issue since it only limits a single user on a single box and does not limit multiple users logged in with Anonymous (for example) from many different boxes.

    I have read on the SAS site that this may be caused by not having enough memory to allocate, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know a better way to get the data in?

    I am running SAS 9.1.3 EG 4.1. The problem seems to be specific to the MYSQL datasets, as I've been able to work with larger datasets that are in SQL Server 2008.

    Thanks

    Thanks, I have searched SAS support, but none of the Problem Notes seemed to help.

    For one-off debugging, it is much simpler to simply comment out the catch block and let the access violation occur. You can then examine the call stack at the time of the exception.

    int data;
    }inputCH[10];

    DB:2.66:Memcpy Accesses Violation k7

    So your memcpy is going to be reading from and writing to something completely different to what you thought. Is it? your access violaton is pretty obvious now ... Not to me. The code in the original post does what the poster wanted and expected, with the proviso that the input doesn't overrun the char variable in the struct. It is inherently dangerous as the buffer for the keyboard input is 200 chars while the input member of the destination struct is only 20 chars. Note that given CHAR lpBuffer[200] then for the memcpy(): (void*)lpbuffer == (void*)lpbuffer == (void*)lpbuffer[0] and ditto for the destination: (void*)currentInput-input == (void*)currentInput-input == (void*)currentInput-input[0] Try it. strcpy(currentInput-input, lpBuffer); but before you even try to compile this, you will know that it will fail because of the types. To get this to a form which will work we have two options ... There's a third: strcpy((char*)currentInput-input, (const char*)lpBuffer); - Wayne

    DB:2.65:Unexpected Ept Violations kc

    Hi,

    we're currently working in a project that involves extending the KVM hypervisor. While running the VM, we sometimes get EPT violations that shouldn't be possible from our understanding of the Intel documents.

    The scenario is as follow (we use Intel VT with EPT enabled):
    All guest paging structures (i.e., the paging structures _inside_ the VM) are set to non-writable on the last EPT level. In other words, whenever the guest OS writes to a guest paging structure (e.g. to map/free a page), this triggers an EPT violation.

    Now, "occasionally" the following happens:
    The VM performs a normal read operation somewhere in memory (doesn't seem to matter where). This then yields an EPT violation and bit 0,  bit 1, and bit 7 are set in the exit qualification field, bit 8 is cleared. According to the Intel specification (Table 27-7), this means that the EPT violation was caused by the MMU setting the dirty or accessed bit in the guest paging structures. At first, this makes sense since these are set to non-writable on the EPT. However, this specific behavior can be disabled according to the Intel docs if bit 6 of the EPTP is cleared (see Section 28.2.4). Then, writes to the access or dirty bits in the PTEs are not considered as memory writes and no EPT violation should happen (to our understanding).

    In fact, for almost all memory operations, we never see any EPT violations as explained in the previous paragraph. They only happens "rarely", but it does.

    Thus my question is if anybody knows under which circumstances writes to access/dirty bits can actually cause EPT violation although bit 6 of the EPTP is cleared. Or are we just missing something in the documentation?

    Cheers,

    Ralf

    DB:2.65:Unexpected Ept Violations kc

    I think you are confusing EPT access/dirty bit updates which are controlled by bit 6 in the EPTP, and the guest page table access/dirty bit updates which are not controlled by bit 6 in the EPTP. Bit 6 in the EPTP AFAICT only controls if the EPT structures themselves are updated with accessed/dirty bits. I don't believe this has any bearing on if you will get an EPT violation exit due to the CPU updating guests paging structures with accessed/dirty bits.

When a lot of VM's processing for a long period of time in different threads, PowerShell script crashes with access violation exception (0xC0000005). After analyzing this issue with Debug Diagnostic Tools I have got the following report:

    The module C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware VIX\VSphere-4.1\32bit\gvmomi.dll has caused an access violation exception (0xC0000005) when trying to read from memory location 0x00000000.

    Hello

    I'm facing the same problem using the VIX API through a Java JNI wrapper. The issue if very sporadic but always happens when opening a disk. VDDK 1.2.0 is installed on the server.

    Here is a copy of a JVM dump log :

    DB:2.63:Labview 2012 Runtime Application Crash: Access Violation Error xj

    hi All,

    my rather large app that I been develping over teh last few years has recently been crashing.

    I do not know if it is since I began compiling it in LV2012 SP1 that the problem occurred or I have some programming error

    that I cannot track down.

    It use to run with uptimes over months, even with some memory leaks.

    If I monitor using Task Manager there is no decernable increase in memory usage.

    It crashes on two different systems - both running Windows XP.

    The developer version running in LabVIEW 2012 f5 ( Windows XP ) does not crash. Only the runtime version crashes.

    It also crashes either if the program sits idle for a few days - 5 or so ( memeory footprint stable ), or if it is used extensively to actively gather and control several instruements ( memory increase matches data size increase )

    It does call several external API via ActiveX to spawn off processes, however from the lvlog.txt it seems the crashing is a simple open file that uses the NI supplied String to Config.vi.

    I have double/triple check my code and I close any refernces open by the calling vi.

    I am sure how to read teh mini-dump files so if someone can look at these it would be apreciated

    thanks

    Michael

    Here are two crash logs:

    Hi Michael,

    It's tough to tell what's going on, especially since it seems like you've really covered your bases! I'm curious about the fact that you don't see the crashes in LabVIEW (LV), just in the Run-Time Engine (RTE). Have you ever tried running it in LV for an extended period of time?

    Also, do you have any loops in your program? Perhaps shrinking any waits that might be present and allowing your program to run faster would decrease the amount of time to see these errors from days to shorter.

    In the future, when you get a dump file, submit it to our RD department. It then pops up on a website that allows me to read them. I can also use win debug but that will take me a bit, so I'll have to get back to you on that.

    Also, if you could take a picture of the error, that would help as well.

    DB:2.63:Access Violation Calling Callstaticobjectmethod 8x

    Hi Everyone,

    I have written a native COM app that is a C++ wrap class for my Java class to be call from VB or asp pages. It works fine, I can get native to java communication to work. My concern is that I have noticed that in the VC++ console debugger when I make a call to the env-CallStaticObjectMethod method the debug console log these lines,

    First-chance exception at 0x0119e602 in GELibrariesAPIService.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000004.

    First-chance exception at 0x0119e602 in GELibrariesAPIService.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000004.

    I'm not quite sure why a jni method throws this. I have made sure that I'm passing the proper types and values for the parameters of the method. This is the code that I'm calling.

    //Before leaving this method we have to release the current thread from the JVM.
    status = this-DetachCurrentThread();

    //Log("Leaving JVM::callAPI()");
    return status;
    }

    Macros being used,

    #define NEWJSTRING(funcName,JStringName,CStringName,CStringDesc) \

    if( str1 != NULL ) \

    this-env-DeleteLocalRef(str1);\
    }
    The line on blue color is the line that is logging the Access violation. I wanted to make clear that the app is working I can get back the java results and send them back to the COM apps.

    It is just I can't find what is wrong with it. I hope I can get some helpful light from some of you in the community.

    Thanks :)

    Hi jschell,

    I'm using plain JNI. I just have created a wrap method for my class.

    //LogT(TMP_LOGGING_STRING);

    //the jvm and global cls variable are taken from the COM object.
    this-jvm = _Module.jvm;

    this-cls=_Module.cls;
    if( cls == 0 )

    if( cls_java_lang_string == 0 )
    {
    wsprintf((LPTSTR) TMP_LOGGING_STRING,A2T("JVM::JVM() -- Fail to find the java/lang/String class.\n") );
    LogT(TMP_LOGGING_STRING);
    }

    //this-str_blnk = _Module.str_blnk;
    }

    BOOL JVM::AttachCurrentThread()
    {
    //Log("Starting JVM::AttachCurrentThread()\n");

    USES_CONVERSION;
    TCHAR TMP_LOGGING_STRING[MAX_LOG_STRING];

    //wsprintf((LPTSTR) TMP_LOGGING_STRING,_T("JVM::AttachCurrentThread() -- About to get env handle.\n") );
    //LogT(TMP_LOGGING_STRING);

    jint res = -1;
    res = this-jvm-AttachCurrentThread((void**)this-env, NULL);

    if (res 0)
    {
    wsprintf((LPTSTR) TMP_LOGGING_STRING,A2T("JVM::AttachCurrentThread() -- Fail to get env handle.\n") );
    LogT(TMP_LOGGING_STRING);
    return FALSE;
    }

    //wsprintf((LPTSTR) TMP_LOGGING_STRING,A2T("JVM::AttachCurrentThread() -- Success on getting env handle.\n") );
    //LogT(TMP_LOGGING_STRING);

    //Log("Leaving JVM::AttachCurrentThread()\n");
    return TRUE;
    }

    BOOL JVM::DetachCurrentThread()
    {

    I have declared the cls variable as global in the COM object. I think a global variable can be shared between threads.

    #include iostream

    #include string

    #include vector
    using namespace std;
    int main(int argc, char* argv[])

    {

            vectorstring s{ "hi" };  // Does not compile on windows!
            return 0;
    }

    The compilation on Windows fails with access violation.

    The linux version of the compiler works fine...

    memory access violation
    I have redownloaded a game that was previously loaded to my computer, now I get this error when trying to play the game 'Memory acess violation'

    DB:2.63:Error When Trying To Play Game Memory Access Violation jj

    Your specs sound more than adequate.
    If the game was previously installed and worked fine then maybeit wasn't fully uninstalled.

    I suggest you uninstall the game, look in the registry for any left over entries that might refer to the game.

    Then reboot and install the game again.

    You could also try to install in compatibility mode. If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

    Use the following steps:
    1)Right click on the Program
    2)Click on Properties
    3)Click on Compatibility tab
    4)Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

    Refer to the link here: Make older programs run in this version of Windows
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

    I need to determine whether my Dimension freezes because of bad ram or motherboard/socket problems. So, I downloaded the latest Diagnostics for my Dimension (XPS B1000r), put it on a CD, copied it to my drive, expanded it and re-booted W98 in DOS. I then ran DELLDIAG.

    But I keep getting the same error message:

    "DellDiag.exe hasell.comm

    caused an exception: Access violation

    EAX-00000034h ......etc etc"

    Finally the message displayed "AMI-RAID Module".

    Does this mean I have a memory problem? Why can't I get all the diagnostics tests to run? Please help. I must be doing something silly.

    peppermint-bunny,

    Make sure that you have any external devices detached from the system when you run these tests as one of these devices may be interfering with the tests. This includes modem and network connections too.

    Hi masala,

    Can you provide a little more information on this issue? When you're syncing the calendar can you tell if it's scanning the device or the Outlook calendar when the sync stops? If its the device calendar I would clear it and resync it with Outlook.

    If its the Outlook calendar, try enabling advanced logging using this article. http://bbry.lv/9eSlM8 and syncing only the calendar. If you want help reading the tif.log and PTTrace.log files you can PM me.

    DB:2.62:Access Violation Reading ss

    Hi, I am a newbie in C++, please help me, I keep getting this error:Unhandled exception at .... : access violation reading location at 0x0000000here is my codeclass myclass{    public:        myclass(string str) {              mystring = str;        }        string mystring;};void createMyClass(myclass * myc) {    myc = new myclass(class created);}int main() {    myclass * myc = NULL;    createMyClass(myc);    cout myc-mystring endl;}

    DB:2.62:Access Violation Reading ss

    There are 2 problems with this code, the first is:void createMyClass(myclass* myc) {//passing pointer by value, local pointer created for function scope myc = new myclass(class created);//myc pointer drops out of scope, dangling pointer!}The second is, you don't deallocate the memory you allocated, C++ has no garbage collection, so you have just leaked memory.Change your code to the following to correct it (please note, this is still pretty bad coding and is not exception safe):void createMyClass(myclass* myc) {//pass myc as reference to pointermyc = new myclass(class created);}int main() {myclass * myc = NULL;createMyClass(myc);cout myc-mystring endl;std::cin.get();//wait for you to press return, so you can see project outputdelete myc; //free the memory we allocated}

    DB:2.62:Marshall.Copy Causes Access Violation zf

    I have an application which recieves a callback from some 3rd party code.  However the final parameter should be an array of length bsize.  I was trying to use the Marshal.copy to extract the correct data from memory.  The code below causes an access violation.  Is this the right way to go about it or am I missing something.

    Code Snippet

    DB:2.62:Marshall.Copy Causes Access Violation zf

    You're not allowed to create pointers to an area of memory and read it unless it is memory that you have allocated yourself.

    Try this:

    Private Sub AIOBProcessEvent(ByVal h As Short, ByVal wParam As _
    Integer, ByVal bSize As Integer, _
    MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPArray, arraysubtype:=UnmanagedType.U1, _
    SizeParamIndex:=2) ByRef buffer As byte)

    I'm not sure if it will work in a callback.
    You need to specify the size of the array, as it is variable you tell the marshaller to look at the second parameter to get the size.

    DB:2.62:C# To C Interop Access Violation - Vista Only? 3c

    Hi,

    I’ve inherited a c++ dll which is causing access violations when called in Vista.
    To test this, I created 2 test harnesses, one in (unmanaged) c++ and one in c#. They call the same 2 functions in the same order with the same arguments. Both run fine on XP machines, but on Vista the c# reports an access violation. (System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.)

    If there was truly a problem with the c++ dll I would expect the c++ harness to report it as well; therefore I think that there is an interop/marshalling problem. I am not sure why it would not be seen on XP however.
    (On Vista it is being run as an administrator and DEP is turned off for both exes.)

    In c++ the struct definition is as follows:

    struct entry2
    {
                WCHAR* pszSid;
                WCHAR* pszUsername;
                WCHAR* pszFullname;
                WCHAR* pszSetPath;
                DWORD dwDiskQuota;
    };

    and the managed struct definition is

    [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)]
    public struct Entry2
    {
        [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPTStr)]
        public string szSid;

        [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPTStr)]
        public string szUsername;

        [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPTStr)]
        public string szFullname;

        [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPTStr)]
        public string szProgramSetsRoot;

        [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U4)]
        public UInt32 dwDiskQuota;
    }

    I have set up remote debugging which works for the native harness, but when I cross the interop boundary from the managed harness I lose the code and it is all reduced to assembly.

    Can anyone see a problem with the interop code, or should I be looking somewhere else? Should it be possible to step through c# into c++ in the same solution?
     Thanks for reading!

    DB:2.62:C# To C Interop Access Violation - Vista Only? 3c

    I can't really say what's going on without seeing relevant parts of the function implementation and/or the calling C++ code. That is to know who should allocate and free what memory.

    DB:2.62:Access Violation When Destroying H.264 Encoder 11

    In the IPP V6.0 sample for H.264 encoder, there seem to be a crash when using thedefault memory allocator. Calling the close method on the encoder will call BaseCodec:Close which will delete the memory allocator. The destructor of the H.264 encoder indirectly access the memory allocator through H264EncoderFrame_Destroy and H264EncoderFrame_deallocateParsedFrameData causing an access violation.

    So if close is called before reaching the destructor of the encoder the codec will crash.

    Hi,
    I decided to writing on this forum after days of trying to debug my exception.
    In short I have developed custom authentication package that I would like to use for interactive logon. It creates the access token in LsaApUserLogon function.

    When I call LsaUserLogon from application I can enumerate new user session, but when I used it for Logon (also I have create custom credential provider) I can see in Windows Event log that I was successfully logged in and then logged out.
    I suspect it is caused by exception in winlogon.exe as it's critical process.

    I would appreciate any help.
    For some reason memory that should be initialized with NetBIOS name plus some characters in front is NULL. I debugged standard MSV1_0 packaged and it pointed to string. Winlogon has hundreds of methodsand I have no clue which are runto track
    this memory address.
    In my custom Credential Provider I use following function to get my Authentication Package
    NTSTATUS LsaLookupAuthenticationPackage(
    _In_HANDLE LsaHandle,
    _In_PLSA_STRING PackageName,
    _Out_PULONG AuthenticationPackage
    );and then setpcpcs-ulAuthenticationPackage = ulAuthPackage;pcpcs-clsidCredentialProvider = CLSID_H1CredentialProvider;for CREDENTIAL_PROVIDER_CREDENTIAL_SERIALIZATION in GetSerializatoin.
    Currently I have exception thrown in
    I have no idea what parameters are passed to AllocServerName, but it seams one of theme is simply NULL

    Here this parameter has value 60, but in winlogon!CUser::CreatePreNotifyEnvironment it added 60 to registry value, which was NULL. (This 60 just move pointer as there is some garbage in fron of NetBIOS name)

    Movzx eax, word ptr [edi] – just to throw exception when it wants to read address 0000060 which is outside memory boundries for winlogon process.

    The exception occurs on virtual machine. I have tried my CP/AP on real machine which same problem except for lack of exception thrown by Winlogon. But as outcome: Successful login and then logout.

    Hi,

    I'm running LabVIEW 2012 (64bits) on a Windows 7 (64bits)computer.

    When Ilaunch the .EXE I receiveareport ofAccess Violation Exception 0xC0000005 at location0x0077c03d4e

    I'm calling an external DLL where I manipulate a string.

    I don't always receive this error. It is random. Most of the times I execute my program perfectly.

    Thanks,

    Carmen.

    Hi, wondering if cgalan evergot this working.

    I'm seeing a similar problem, using Labview 2011, and recently installing the executable on a 64 bit windows machine (it's always worked on 32-bit machines).

    After readinghttp://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/CE69D2C55480900486257B6A0037C327?OpenDocument

    I went through looking for Call Library Functions that might be causing the issue. I found Open Registry, Close Registry, and Read Registry vi's that use this, and changed the file paths as recommended. No improvement.

    Is there an easy way to look for Call Library functions? These were deep within one of NI's Report Generator vi's. I'm wondering whether there may be others.

    I see two errors:

    Your DllImport doesn't specify the CharSet. You must specify it to make sure you marshal strings as ANSI strings.The function VSMGetPercentageUsed() function returns a stack buffer. This buffer is released automatically when the function scope is ended, which is the instant the function exits, which is the main reason of your exception.
    In general, programming a C DLL requires experience and an excellent understanding of memory management. You need to learn the skills.
    In a nutshell: As much as possible, an externed function must not allocate memory. Instead it should request for pre-allocated memory to write the result(s) to. You see this in the Windows API all the time. GetUserName(), GetWindowText()
    and many, many others like these require that you pre-allocate the buffer receiving the requested data and you should always attempt to code your DLL's this way.
    But if your implementation makes it difficult for the caller of the DLL to figure out the amount of RAM required for a function call, you may allocate memory inside the externed function, but then you are forced to provide a deallocator function. Again,
    the Windows API does this often too. You always see paired functions: LocalAlloc() to allocate RAM, and LocalFree() to deallocate; GlobalAlloc()/GlobalFree() is another, etc.Jose R. MCP

    DB:2.59:Vista Bug Report: Stack Memory Allocation Fault Causing Access Violation? 1p

    I am working on making an application Vista compatible, and have traced an Access Violation I was getting (new to Vista) to an assembly language routine called by my window paint event handler, the fault it appears caused by a Vista stack memory allocation bug. I report this because this may be useful info for the MS development team to fix a problem that may cause undiagnosed Access Violations in a number of applications, especially games.

    My assembly language procedure is, on entry, lowering the stack pointer (esp) by about 5K to allocate space for some local variables. It then copies some information to this newly allocated area bottom up. In some circumstances (see following) the first write to this newly allocated area (near but above its bottom) causes an Access Violation. If, on the other hand, my procedure first touches (either writes or reads) the newly allocated stack memory from top to bottom, the violation never occurs. It therefore appears that the Vista stack memory allocation (paging) in some circumstances fails to prepare the necessary memory to grow the stack, unless it is accessed from top down, as it would be by (eg) push instructions. This is new to Vista - the application has been widely used on XP for several years without this problem showing.

    The specific circumstances when I have seen the problem are when the program has displayed a standard Windows Print Setup dialog over its main window, then the user moves the dialog (Show window contants while dragging enabled) causing the main window to repaint an area and my assembly language procedure to be called.

    DB:2.59:Vista Bug Report: Stack Memory Allocation Fault Causing Access Violation? 1p

    This behaviour is expected, NT's auto allocation only works if allocations are 4k otherwise you potentially touch RAM beyond the guard page, see:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/100775

    You might get away with this on XP if it's using less stack, but it's still a bug waiting to happen.

    DB:2.59:Does Vmware Get Crash Reports From Microsoft? ax

    So this is somewhat hitting below the belt...I was running VM Player on a host that I was deliberately trying to exhaust Pagefile charge (memory). I wasn't trying to crash Player but the Windows host itself.

    In using LeakyApp from the Windows Resource kit, I had a guest running in Player and LeakyApp eventually exhausted all available swap. Windows continued to run and it basically robbed all available memory from the largest heaps including VMPlayer. The VMM exe, under these conditions caused an access violation writing to NULL (presumably a freed handle). I freed up some memory so Windows Internet reporting could send the dump to Microsoft. Do these eventually go to VMware or should I post the dr.watson log here? I realize the latter is faster, but I'm curious as to the answer of the subject.

    DB:2.59:Does Vmware Get Crash Reports From Microsoft? ax

    Either should be ok; this option won't trigger any additional logging unless it fails, but using procexp would show dbghelp.dll loaded into the vmware-vmx process.

    I click the OK button and everything is normal again, but if I reboot, such as after a shutdown to save power this will happen again and I will struggle with it for days (rebooting again and again) until I get a the cryptic error messages listed above. The
    error listings are different each time.

    I am running XP (sp 3) on a laptop with 2 g. ddr3, 1.73 ghz. Centrino processor.

    Can anyone help me?

    Method 2
    If ‘Method 1’ doesn’t help, you may perform in-place upgrade. This operation reinstalls Windows XP to the same folder on your computer where it was originally installed.
    However, before you perform in-place upgrade of Windows XP, back up all important data to another location like CD/DVD, USB drive etc.
