DB:4.25:Two Unique Columns In Sql Azure Federation 7p

Assume a Users table has ID and emailAddress columns though in reality it would have more. ID is a uniqueidentifier whereas emailAddress is nvarchar(256). I need to make sure both of these columns are unique. Also, this table is in a federation member
database. How could I achieve this?

DB:4.25:Two Unique Columns In Sql Azure Federation 7p

just follow what the error tells you.
federated columns are required to be part of a unique or clustered index.
    see: Federation Guidelines and Limitations
so, for your unique index, the columns should be IdemailAddress

How does one create a scalable database tier on Azure? I don't want to use Azure Table Storage since there is no concept of relationships. SQL Azure is only limited to 150 GB per database, and SQL Azure Federation does not allow unique columns, but I need
to validate column uniqueness other than the federated column.

DB:3.56:How To Create A Scalable Database Tier On Azure Without Forgoing Relationships And Unique Constraints? xf

    Hi,
You could consider having this table on a non-federated database where you'd ensure the uniqueness of the data on your column (example: EmailAddresses). Although, I do understand that this solution defeats the purpose of scalling out your DB.
    Hope this helps!Best Regards,

    Hello,

    www.hello.com

DB:3.12:Extracting Unique Records From Two Different Tables Record 7x

Unfortunatly you didn't mention the expected output. I guess it would be the one line
    "www.testing.com"

in that case simply join the two tables.

    select *
    from saVideos v
    join saImages i on i.sa_id = v.sa_id and i.picLinks = v.videoLinks
where v.sa_id=21;If needed then you could change the select list to retrieve only distinct values.
    select unique v.sa_id, v.videolinks
    from saVideos v
    join saImages i on i.sa_id = v.sa_id and i.picLinks = v.videoLinks
where v.sa_id=21;I usually avoid distinct/unique whereever possible. This requires the database to do a sort and makes the query slow.

    Hi
We've just upgraded our database to use federations which is great and working well. Unfortunately, we realized that our reporting services do not work with our federation database.

We can't add the Use Federationstatementin the report queries.

We get the following error: USE statement is not supported to switch between databases. Use a new connection to connect to a different Database.

We tried to create stored procedures to retrieve the data, but we weren't able to switch to the federations in a store procedure.
Our last hope was the create a WCF Service which would provide us the data, but it is not possible to use another datasource than SQL Azure for Azure Reporting Services.

Is there any solution to use SQL Azure Reporting Services with an SQL Azure database which uses federations?

DB:2.92:New Transaction Is Not Allowed Because There Are Other Threads Running In The Session Execption With Federation Services ck

We are developing an application which uses SQL Azure with Federation Services. We integrated the federation service logic into our application recently. Now, we noticed some strange SQL
exceptions with the following message: New transaction is not allowed because there are other threads running in the session. The appearance of this error is completely not deterministic.

Our application's logic is quite complex. We use Linq 2 SQL, and create a new DataContext (also a new connection) when we want to work on a different federation member. It is possible that
multiple connections exist on the same thread directed to different federation members, but always one thread exists at the same time.

Sometimes we use transactions within one federation member. We begin the transaction manually with the SqlConnection class BeginTransaction method mixed with manually executed BEGIN TRANSACTION
command. Bofore the transaction begin we send a USE FEDERATION... statement. We suspect always a transaction begin occures this issue. Without federation srvices, on a local sql server it runs without any problems.

Does anyone met with this issue? Do you have an idea what should cause this exception?
We think that the indeterministical nature of the error may come from connection pooling and not properly closed connections. Is it possible that the connection got from the pool is
not in a resetted state, so it in a transaction of an other thread?

DB:2.92:New Transaction Is Not Allowed Because There Are Other Threads Running In The Session Execption With Federation Services ck

I am not sure what the issue could be, but two things come in mind:
    - Read this bug on Connect related to this message. It contains interesting information about the underlying cause for this error message, and says that you don't need multiple threads to get to this error.

    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/612369/misleading-error-message-in-sqlexception-when-using-entity-framework
    - If somehow a transaction gets promoted to a distributed transaction, you would get an error, because SQL Azure doesn't support distributed transactions. I can't think of why you would hit this issue because you are using SqlTransaction; and that's not
supposed to escalate to distributed transactions...
What if you change your code to only use BEGIN TRANSACTION in your T-SQL? Does the error still happen?

    Hello All,

We are on SQL Server 2000.. We have a clustered index on two columns of a table and neither of the two columns are part of the primary key. What we have noticed is that sometimes the table is accepting duplicates for the clustered index rows.. My assumption was that making the two columns part of a clustered index ensures that data in the two columns combined would be unique because of a 'uniqueifier' added by SQL Server...

But looks like my assumption may have been wrong... Do we need to re-create the clustered index as a unique clustered index in order to enforce uniqueness in the two columns... Could you please advise.

Now my requirement is to build a dynamic sql in forms 6i.when I click the build sql it should update the sql

    So --- I have to write a procedure --

    Select db_table || . || db_column || || group_key

    ---group_key is an alias

    From db_table, From_clause

--- Here the logic should be

    1. I should remove the commas from the FROM_CLAUSE and check for duplicate values
    2. i should check for duplicate values for the DB_TABLE column
    3. I should compare both the FROM_CLAUSE and DB_TABLE for DUPLICATE VALUES
    4. After doing this I should add the result to the FROM in the select statement

DB:2.85:Very Slow Response Time With Sql Server On Azure With Specific Query 1s

    Hi!
I am using developing an online game service in the cloud with with SQL Azure, Entity Framework, Visual Studio 2010. Today, when doing some maintenance work with the help of a client application (also written in .NET), I noticed extremely slow performance
on specific queries. The maintenance work could not be completed due to timeouts.
So, I started to investigate. I changed the connection string to go against a local SQL Server and could fetch the specific SQL that generates the problem on Azure (but not locally). This specific SQL was then executed in Query Analyzer in SSMS against SQL
    Azure.

    DECLARE@IntVariableint;

    DECLARE@SQLStringnvarchar(MAX);

    DECLARE@ParmDefinitionnvarchar(MAX);

    SET@SQLString=

    N'SELECT

    [Extent1].[Id] AS [Id],

    SET@ParmDefinition=N'@GameId int';

    SET@IntVariable=585;

    EXECUTEsp_executesql@SQLString,@ParmDefinition,

    @GameId=@IntVariable;

Every time I run the above query code the execution time is doubled (more or less). 1, 2, 4, 8, 16,... seconds. If I remove some columns, or does not use sp_executesql, the problem disappears - the execution is very fast, as it
should be. But I need to use sp_executesql, since Entity Framework generates the sql for me.
GameId is a foreign key (many table), which I have an non-unique, non-clustered index on. Two or four rows out of around 1000 rows is returned.
What might cause this delay/throttling/execution time problem on SQL Azure? How to continue the trouble shooting?

“Recommendations for Scaling Out” in the official guidance for sql azure at
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn495641.aspx
    states:
“In order to create the most scalable solutions, customers developing new applications should follow a self-sharding approach. Customers with existing
federation solutions can contact Microsoft support for assistance with converting to a more scalable, flexible self-sharding solution.”
Self-sharding is described in the same document as :

”Design custom self-sharding solutions to maximize scalability and flexibility for resource intense
workloads. These solutions use application code across multiple databases.”
    --
I’m confused by this article, are microsoft suddenly advising against using sql federations for new projects? And what exactly do they mean by self-sharding??

DB:2.79:Why Does Microsoft Advise Against Using Sql Azure Federations? 88

    Hi,
From working with customers, we have seen that custom sharding solutions typically lead to better results regarding scalability, flexibility, and performance as compared to Federations. This is the rationale for the guidance that you referred to (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn495641.aspx).It
is also one of the reasons for retiring Federations together with the Web and Business Editions as Guy had already pointed out on this thread.
Having said this, there is work underway to create more usable methods for routing requests to different databases in Azure. There was good guidance published last year by the CAT team around self-sharding patterns at

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/17987.cloud-service-fundamentals.aspx , and more material like this will be coming shortly.
Meanwhile I am curious to better understand your scenario for Federations, and what might be a substitute for Federations given your current design imperatives.I am part of the Azure DB product team and you can reach me at torsteng(at)microsoft.com

You can build a federated topology using on-premise SQL Server if you design and plan your database using distributed partitioned views as detailed in the 2008R2 Books Online:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190381(SQL.105).aspx
There's a lot more working pieces and it takes a lot of forethought and planning up front to make it work but it is possible to do. It is not like Azure Federations as you will see if you read through the topics. Given today's hardware capabilities,
I don't find it necessary to do for most on-premise SQL Server implementations and leveraging other newer features in 2012 would likely be much more beneficial and significantly easier to maintain and administer.Jonathan Kehayias | Principal Consultant,

I'm trying to understand how sql azure federates using a unique identifier. If I want to split a federation into 2 nodes with half of the guid range in each, what is the right way to specify this?
    Would splitting at 80000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 work?

    Hi Stephanie,
It appears to me that a federation can be created but switching to it and the issuing ddl fora create table within the federation, specifying federate on is not. (which is appears slightly different to that which youstate). Either way it would
    be nice to do this.

    DB:2.72:Scalable Sql-Based Database Tier px

What's the right way to create a scalable SQL-based database tier? I don't want a No-SQL approach since I need foreign key relationships and table joins. Azure Table Storage is a no-go. SQL Azure has a 150GB limit. SQL Azure Federation can be used to achieve
scalability, but I think it's impossible to define unique constraints, use distributed transactions, and table joins across databases.

If I need to count the number of comments by users who live in the U.S., I first need to get user IDs from each federated DB that match user demographics, pass the IDs to each DB, and retrieve comment counts. Assuming each user ID is a GUID, then per user,
I send 16 bytes to the server. If there are 10M users that match my criteria, then I need to transfer 160MB of GUID data to the server. This is a lot of load. Plus, there will be multiple concurrent users doing the same task.
Never used Hadoop, and I don't know how helpful it can be in doing what I want to do.
    Any help is appreciated.

    DB:2.72:Scalable Sql-Based Database Tier px

Scaling of relational databases which are designed to live on a scale up, not out infrastructure presents an inherent set of issues. These are issues that are now being addressed via various no-SQL approaches.

If I use your scenario (counting comments made by users who live in the US). I'd solve this via no-SQL by having a table that's specifically geographically based counters. Each time a user posts a comment, I'd update that table. If I need to scale that out,
I'd look at approaches like multiple counters that need to be aggregated (say a separate counter for each application instance so they aren't trying to clobber each other). And I can drive this further by allowing each application instance to buffer the counter
and flushing it to the persistent store either every nn number of counts or minutes.
So in my example, a single query from azure table storage could easily net me all the counters then its a quick and low cost operation to iterate through them and aggregate the count. Worst case scenario, the count may be a few 'ticks' off, but if I'm doing
the kinds of volumes that are going to require this type of scalable scenario, a little noise in the data is likely not to be of any real consequence.

DB:2.71:Regional Data Store Design With Azure Sql xf

I am designing an Azure based
solutions for one of my clients and considering Azure website Azure SQL database. In the application, data is generated from all over the world. One of the requirements say, we need to keep some of the countries data in the region that the country belongs
to due to some legal / privacy issues.
I was watching channel 9 Azure SQL federation video series (Azure SQL database elastic scale recently), I was wondering if I could create region based partitions. Such as, data
for the country ‘UK’ should be kept in one of Microsoft’s UK or Western European data center. For eastern US region data, we use Virginia, US data center. Data for that region should stay in that region only.
But at the same time, we keep one master table from the database perspective so that we don’t need to change the web application code as we keep splitting data across different
    regions. Is it possible?

Or how do you handle such requirements of regional data storage in Azure SQL?

DB:2.71:Regional Data Store Design With Azure Sql xf

Thanks Torsten and Mekh for the explanation.
I'mstill talking with the client's legal team about the location for data processing (App tier). If the processing is not allowed outside of the region - I have to move even the app tier too in different regions.
BTW: If you have come across any such case study or architecture for an Azure based solution that has similar regional data storingand processing issue, please share the link.

We have an environment setup with Sharepoint Azure and Sharepiont online. Federation has been installed using Windows 2012 R2 ( ADFS 3.0). The trust between the Azure Online was setup and hybrid search functionality was perfectly allright.

Due to recent changes, we rebuild the Sharepoint Azure environment and the trust has been rebuild. Federation works fine, but when we logon to Sharepoint Online in o365 and do a search, it does not search the Azure platform sharepoint. We get Errors of

    Hello,
If I understand correctly, you want to specify the connection while creating the instance for the DbContext.
From my opinion, it is possible actually. Because the DbContext provide the Constructor:
    public DbContext(string nameOrConnectionString);
    It is explained as:
Constructs a new context instance using the given string as the name or connection string for the database to which a connection will be made.
So we can specify the connect string while creating the connection.

DB:2.65:Using Custom Spatial Indexes In Multi-Tenant Sql Azure Federation Database 7m

We are very interested in leveraging SQL Azure Federation for our application. Currently each of our customers has their own separate SQL Azure database which obviously does not scale well. One of the reason we do this is because each client is in a different
geo-location and our app makes heavy use of SQL Server spatila datatypes and indexes. Each of our customers has a custom spatial index in their database that specifices a bounding box for their community.
The obvious migration to SQL Azure Federation would be to have each customer in their own federation member. My question/concern around SQL Azure Federation is whether we will be able to have these same custom spatial indexes on individual federation members.
    Is this currently supported?
    Thanks.

DB:2.65:Using Custom Spatial Indexes In Multi-Tenant Sql Azure Federation Database 7m

Hi There, spatial indexes are supported in Federations. There are no restrictions. You can have spatial indexes in federation members and repartitioning operations like SPLIT will SPLIT federated data as well as spaial indexes as you repartition your database
to handle application workload. Spatial queries can be CPU intensive and scaling out with federations can give you access to additonal nodes and coresin SQL Azure thus in general is a good idea for computationally heavy applications...
Love to find out more about the details of the application, If you are available to chat more, pls email me at

    Hi all,
Our system is using SQL Azure federations and Data sync to sync up data.
Now, we are encountering an issue. We have created sync groups with root database and federation members, it works fine. However, when we split one federation, that means previous federation member will be removed and generate two federation members instead.
    It's OK.
The problem is that the previous federation has been synced up and generate some tables like:
    DataSync.tablename_dss_tracking
    DataSync.tablename_scope_info_dss...
And two new federations also has these DataSync tables during process of spliting previous federation member. Then we I sync the two new federations with root database, the tables will cause errors like:
See the inner exception for more details.
Inner exception: Failed to execute the command 'UpdateCommand' for table 'dbo.tablename'; the transaction was rolled back. Ensure that the command syntax is correct.
    Inner exception: SqlException Error Code: -2146232060 - SqlError Number:515, Message: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'local_create_peer_timestamp', table 'DataSync.tablename_dss_tracking';
column does not allow nulls. UPDATE fails. SqlError Number:3621, Message: The statement has been terminated.

    How to handle the problem?

    DB:2.64:Data Sync With Federations 97

if you're not up to finding out what's causing it and have MS look at it, after doing deprovisioning the new federation members, just drop the reference tables and re-create them empty (or even let Data Sync create the tables for you) and have the first
sync populate them. even if you get it running without dropping them, you'll get sync conflicts anyway.

    2. Select 100 objects a 100 times
2.1 Executed in azure(Website deployed in azure): 4 seconds
2.2 Executed on a local database: 0.8 seconds.

I am confused by the TechNet documentation for ADFS 2.0. I am trying to work out what certificates I need.
On the page When to Create a Federation Server Farm, it says, A federation server farm consists of two or more federation servers that
share the same AD FS configuration database and token-signing certificates.
    On Token-Signing Certificates,
it says there are two options, sharing or:

There is a unique token-signing certificate for each federation server in a farm.

When you use multiple, unique certificates throughout your farm, each server in that farm signs tokens with its own unique private key.

As shown in the following illustration, you can obtain a separate token-signing certificate for every single federation server in the farm. This option is more expensive if you plan to obtain your token-signing certificates from a public CA
Given the detail in the latter document, I'm inclined to go with it. It's our policy to use separate certificates for each server, normally. But which documentis right?

DB:2.63:Adfs, Token-Signing Certificates - Should They Be Shared Across The Farm? pf

I cannot think off a scenario using different token-signingcerts within a ADFS web farm.
I totally agree with you that best security practice is having separated keys for each box.
You should see the ADFS farm as a cluster of servers and they appear as one system to the clients. And then you want have the same keys on all nodes of your cluster, oops ADFS web farm.
Using the same SSL cert on all machines as well.

You have to import the database into a standalone database, then bcp (or copy by some other mechanism) your data into the target federation member. Basically, set up your federation first, import the db, bcp the data across.
Not ideal. I prefer sharding, and managing the member databases through the app layer.

Support for federation is required to enable users who have an account with a trusted customer or partner organization, including partner domains and users of public instant messaging (IM) provider users that you support, to collaborate with users in your
organization. If you enable federation, you can IM with Lync user in other organization, if you don’t enable, you won’t have the ability to IM with Lync users in other organization. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Unique constraints are perfectly acceptable. Unique indexes might be useful if you plan on querying the table specifying all the columns in one of your unique constraints.

Can you post the error number error code you're getting. The SQL you're executing at the time would also be helpful.

    Hi

If you execute the statements you posted you get the following error:

    ORA-00001: unique constraint (NF9I.RT_UNQ_LOCAL_11) violated

If you drop this unique index and re-execute the second insert it works. Then the following select displays the values contained in this index:

    select ROAD_NUMBER,
    MNPLTY_GEO_LOCN_SEQNUM,
    EFFECTIVE_DATE,
    ROUTE_SIGNING,

Hopefully, I'm just missing something here. How will the upcoming federation support impact the pricing of Sql Azure? In other words, if I create a federation that truly is web-scale, can I store ~1 - 5 TB across the federation? If so, how is this billed?
My confusion is based on the fact that the largest SQL Azure billable size is 50GB.
    Thoughts?
    TIA!

Yes Chris, that is correct. When you create a federation, you are creating the first federation member as well so you are at that point paying for 2 databases.

DB:2.61:Wcf Ria Data Services And Sql Azure Federation (Sharding) fp

Is it possible to use SQL Azure Federation using WCF RIA Data Services?

I currently have a standard LOB Silverlight 4 application that I am trying to convert to be a Multi-tenant app. I would like to user SQL Azure Federation (to shard the DB) and allow for tenant data separation. The current app uses RIA Data service via an Entity
    Framework to access the DB.

The code samples I've seen to force an entity framework Linq query on to the correct Federation is as follows:

    string federationCmdText = @USE FEDERATION FED_1 (range_id=40) WITH FILTERING=ON, RESET;

    ((IObjectContextAdapter)dc).ObjectContext.Connection.Open();

    dc.Database.ExecuteSqlCommand(federationCmdText);

    IListOrder orders = (from x in dc.Orders

    select x).ToListOrder();
However in my Domain Services (LinqToEntitiesDomainService) object I do not appear to have access to the Database object to execute the SQL command directly.

    I tried the following approach

    public IQueryableConfig GetConfigs()
    {
    this.ObjectContext.Connection.Open();
    System.Data.Common.DbCommand cmd = this.ObjectContext.Connection.CreateCommand();
    cmd.CommandText = @USE FEDERATION TenantFederation (FedTenantID=0) WITH FILTERING=ON, RESET;
    cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
    return this.ObjectContext.Configs;
    }

But I get an error ‘Query syntax is not valid near identifier ‘Federation’. However the syntax is valid if I execute it on the Database directly.

Could someone point me in the right direction or provide some code samples.

    Thanks

First off is it correct if the root database goes down than you are unable to contact the federation? Is there any techniques for failover with federations?
Another question, What are some different techniques that can be used for disaster recovery?

DB:2.61:Azure Sql Federation - How Do You Deal With Availability On The Root Database? dj

The Root Database is handled in Azure DB just like any other database -- so it is replicated across 3 physical databases automatically and will fail-over transparently just like the federation members or other stand-alone databases. Still you are correct
that when the root is unavailable, the federation members are as well.
I would be curious to learn more about your scenario for using federations to see if there are other techniques that could improve your availability. Some customers with sharding patterns have chosen to manage their own mapping outside of the
federations model, caching or replicating the mapping data to protect against any unavailability, and performing routing in the application directly using separate connections. Feel free to contact me at

Where you will store user2group data? If on the same federation as user, how you will get all users from group?(Get all groups for user is easy, it is in the same federation).
Is there a solution on SQL Azure, or best practice on application layer? If yes, please be concrete.
    Thank you.

DB:2.60:Many To Many Relationship Within Sql Federation mm

Doing cross member queries is tricky. I developed an open-source library that helps developers perform IN and NOT IN operators across federation members. The link to the project is here:
http://enzosqlshard.codeplex.com/. The version that implements Federations is the next release, which is found here:
    http://enzosqlshard.codeplex.com/releases/view/72791.
It's not perfect by any means, but it provides an implementation model for cross member queries. So you can send a modified T-SQL statement (called a Distributed Query)to the library, which will be interpreted by the library, returning a single data
set. The library supports the following syntax, where sql1 is the query that fetches data from the first federation, and sql2 fetches data from the second federation.
    SELECT fields USING ( sql1 ) FEDERATED ON {ROOT, (fed_name [, member_key = member_value [, FILTERED]]) }
    [WHERE field [NOT] IN ( sql2 ) FEDERATED ON {ROOT, (fed_name [, member_key = member_value [, FILTERED]]) }]

    [ORDER BY fields3]
    [CACHED FOR n seconds]
A test application is included in the project so you can see how to code a few different Distributed Queries.Herve Roggero, MVP SQL Azure Co-Author: Pro SQL Azure http://www.herveroggero.com

DB:2.59:How To Replicate The Funcionality Of A Foreign Key In Azure Table Storage 1f

    Hi
i'm new to the azure table storage usage. My understanding is that I should have a unique partitionkey and different row keys to identify a row in a table.

partition key = one unique key for every table in my sql server Database.
row key = primary key inside the table
If this assumption is right, I have tables where 2 columns combined give the primary key functionality to the table. Now will I be able to have 2 row keyswith a partition key to uniquely identify the row inside the table storage ?
cansome oneplease share some light on this.

    karteek_paruchuri

DB:2.59:How To Replicate The Funcionality Of A Foreign Key In Azure Table Storage 1f

By the way it's architectured, Azure Storage Tables uniquely identify an entity on a partition key (PK) and row key (RK) basis. That said, PKRK = unique.
Of course, in SQL Server you can have computed columns or even combined primary keys out of two or more columns. In order to achieve a similar functionality, you could consider your RowKey as a computed column of one or more properties of your entity. For
example, whatever the PK is, consider you have PropertyA = X and PropertyB = Y. You could have your RK configured as a computation of the two, such as X_Y. As long as one of the columns is unique, you will have a unique RK inside your partition. However,
if you can't make sure thatone of these properties are unique, you either have the option of creating your own logic for making the computed result unique or use one of these properties as your partition key and the otheras the row key.
The way you would achieve this is by creating your own C# class that inherits the abstract class EntityTable. Whenever you configure one of the entity's properties, make sure that you will also configure the EntityTable's PartitionKey or RowKey properties
    accordingly.
One other thing to keep in mind is that you could leverage this approach into creating RowKeys and PartitionKeys that can be used for your queries, so that you only fetch one single entity from the table rather than fetching a whole partition and query through
    it in memory.

I have two federated databases in SQL Azure Federation. Each one has two tables. The tables (table A and table B) in one database are the same as the tables (table A and table B) in another.

Per user action, I need to save to both tables, however, I first need to decide which database to connect to. I added two Entity Framework models, one for each database.

If an error occurs while saving to one database, I need to rollback the changes made to another. I then found out about TransactionScope, but I don't want to turn on the DTC. This won't work at all if the users need to turn it on too.

How do I attempt to save to multiple databases and rollback if an error occurs?

DB:2.59:Rollback Transaction For A Database If An Error Occurs When Saving To Another Database z3

    Hi,
In your specific scenario, if I understand correctly, you wish to have this natural rollback in place. With the UnitOfWork pattern you canimplement rollback functionality. So, you'll end up needing to implement something like:
When an error occurs on a CRUD operation in Database A you then undo any CRUD operation done in Database B. Although, I don't think that this is the write path to follow.Best Regards,

    Hi Vitor,
My feeling was that the comment was referring to physical servers. If that was the case, my clarification is really important, because readers might have get the idea that the scalability given by federated databases is limited by the scalability limits
of a physical server, which of course is wrong since the federation members are distributed through the data center.

    Hi,
That requires a query to all federation members in order to find out where the key is... not performant.
If you really can't get customerID from the app I suggest you have a costumerID that somehow maps to the costumerName in order to avoid hitting the database for finding out costumerID.
If you can't do nothing like that you can:
    - Check federations metadata (in root db) in order to get the list of all federation members
    - Loopfederationmembers (filtered=off) and ask for costumerID

    On
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/hh597457.aspx, it says the following:
The federation atomic unit is explicitly not a security boundary. The query processor does not guarantee zero information leakage between units. It is possible that rows outside the range will be partially processed. Arbitrary scalar logic might run
on those rows, which can result in unexpected exceptions such as overflow or divide by zero.
I'm trying to understand what this actually means. As I understand this, it means that if I store a set of data in federation member A,I may be able to access that when I'm connected to federation member B as well,is that right?
Second, what does partially processed mean in this context? And what does the phrase arbitrary scalar logic might run on those rows.Whose logic? Internally in SQL Azure, orscalar logic in my application code? And why would
    these result inunexpected exceptions?
It seems like I should parse this all as SQL Azure will try to keep data in only one federation member but it may leak to other federation members as well, from the application points of view.
If this is the case, why is it called an atomic unit in the first place?

DB:2.57:Using A Sql Azure Database W/ Federation From A Java Or Php Web App(Which Previously Used Mysql) 31

    Hi,

I am working to convert some PHP/Java web apps to use SQL Azure-- currently they use MySQL.

Microsoft provides a converter to convert a MySQL database to SQL Server so db conversion is not a problem
What I am concerned about is the code conversion--
Even here, from what I see (in PHP)-- mostly the change to be made to php code is the name of the function that actually makes the call.
But am I correct? Are the code changes in PHP much more than cosmetic? And also what about code changes that may need to be made to the PHP code to take federation into account?
The same concerns are also applicable for the java apps that I want to convert to use SQL server with federation--

    (a) What are the typical java code changes
    (b) How and in what ways does federation affect java code.
    (c) If a library like hibernate is used- I understand that the config file for hibernate has to be changed-- but how does federation affect the code?

    Regards,
    Arvind.

DB:2.57:Using A Sql Azure Database W/ Federation From A Java Or Php Web App(Which Previously Used Mysql) 31

    Hi Arvind,
Typical java code changes includes using latest driver for SQL server as previously you must be using MySQL driver.
Use DSN connection if possible and use SQL native Client 11.0
Also most of the function calls should remain same if i'm not wrong queries will change.
regarding federation you need to make sure you take care of data range while adding data to federated tables else it will error out.
So it will need extra coding at application level.
I haven't used hibernate so won't be able to answer much on hat side but again as it comes to federation you need to make sure you add record to shard in which it belongs to.
When you use federation it involved one more command where first you connect to federation and then you connect to particular range in federation and i don't think so hibernate will do that by defauly you need make sure you do this using custom coding.
    thanks,

    Hi Kishore,

What will you be selecting from these tables once you have your from clause? Normally, when you select from multiple tables, you have joins between the tables - your example does not show this. If, however, you want to select a single column (eg, an ID column) from all tables you should be using the UNION operator.

    Hello,
Basically you can connect to a SQL Azure database the same way as you can do with an on-premise SQL server. There are some small difference:
    SQL Azure
    - supports only SQL authentification, not Windows auth
    - requires an encypted connection; but that's just a property in the connection string
    See for example:

    DB:2.56:Primary Key Components mp

I defined a primary key using two columns as Extract_Date and Sequence_Nuumber. Both columns are part of the primary key. Extract_Date is the date transaction records are extracted from external database. Sequence_Number is unique within extract date. For example for a given date 20070630 we can have many transaction records with unique numbers. When tried to populate the external data using SQL Loader in an empty table every record was rejected because of Primary Key Unique Violation. I believe since the extract date was same for every transactions every record was rejected. I need help how to define Primary key where part of the kay may not be unique as extract date. If some one can please send me the syntax for defining these columns and primary key constraints. I used TOAD to define a record.

    DB:2.56:Primary Key Components mp

I guess my problem is that the part of the key is unique that is extract_date. the second part of the key is non unique. This is drived from the Sybase IQ server. The two components of the key will make the unique combination. Problem is that when populating data using SQL Loader. The row is reject not based on the complete key but based upon the partial key that is extract date. As a test i redifined the table. This time instead of using multiple column primary key I used one column as EXT_DATE_SEQ_NUMBER AND and used the concatinated value of the extract_date and Seq Number. This worked. Although Iit worked but this is not a clean design. My question is do you know what could be the reason when the part of the key is not unique the rows are rejected as PK Constraint Violation.

    Hi,
I am using data sync CTP 2 for synchronization between local DB and SQL Azure DB.

    1. My que is that it is possible to have synchronization between two tables which having different schema i.e. what if I have a table with 10 columns in SQL Azure DB and a table
with 4 columns on local DB and the data type and the columns name of local DB table is same as the SQL Azure DB table.

    2. Can we sync between two tables having
    different name.
    3. What if I change the schema of local DB tables will it reflect to SQL Azure or vice versa.

    Hi Edward,
thanx for your reply.Actually I am working on both CTP as well Framework 2.1, I have created a small application using framework 2.1 but my requirement

    Hi,
I am attempting to configure Azure Active Directory to act as an IDP for an SP initiated SAML flow. However, there is nowhere to establish the relying part trust...
I see that there used to be a field to declare the SPs Federation metadata URL, but I don't see that on the application configuration page. Ref here, about two-thirds down the page - http://www.theidentityguy.com/articles/2013/6/4/a-look-at-azure-ads-web-sign-in-endpoints.html
How do I establish the trust with the SP?
    Thanks,

DB:2.55:How To Configure Relying Party Trust With Azure Ad? m3

    Hello Y Pereira,
Thanks. From what I understand from the above, AzureAD cannot use SP metadata and that AAD is different to ADFS.

    A few follow-up questions:

    Difference between AzureAD and ADFS?
I assumed that Azure AD would have functional parity with on-prem AD (ADFS). With ADFS, the SAML responses can be signed. So why the 'relaxation' in security with AzureAD?
    Configuring claims
Unlike ADFS, I don't see a way to configure the claims that AzureAD will send back to the relying party. Is this possible?
Presume the logoutUrl is what AAD will redirect a client to after they logout?

In this previous statement: As a reminder, I am trying to provide my SP's Federation Metadata to ADFS so that ADFS can sign the assertions it sends back. - Did you mean AAD instead of ADFS?

Yes, some customers will have on-prem AD exposed through ADFS, some may be using AzureAD - I had assumed that they were identical in functionality and that was just using 'ADFS' that happened to be exposed as a first class Azure service.

    Thanks,
    Stuart

DB:2.55:Looking For Advice Regarding Storage Of Data On Azure Platform. 78

    Hello-

I'm new to Azure and am in the process of writing my first web service on the Azure platform. I am developing a service that manages and provides access to a simple list of objects. The objects represent unique items that need to be 'distributed'
to clients on a first come, firstservicebasis. The service will be accessed bymultipleclients, perhaps simultaneously. It is not clear to me if I should make use of the Azure table service or Azure SQL. I'm not a database
kind of guy, and since I will not be needing any of the relational features of SQL I thought perhaps SQL may be overkill.
My biggest concern is insuring that no two clients get the same object off the list. In effect I want to place some sort of semaphore around the list insuring that only one client at a time can remove an object from the list. I realize this is
not vary scalable, but my application does not require massive scalability. Due to the nature of the application, chances are quite rare that any two clients will be accessing the list at the same time, but it is possible.
Any advice anyone can share would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

    DB:2.55:Sql Azure Reportserver Performance k8

    Hi Gert-Jan,

The total process time from clicking the report until showing up the report contain many aspect, it is relevant to your query, report's
design, network status, distance from data center, distance from report server center, hardware, and so on. Here, I would like to recommend you have a look at the execution log information, which contain three part time(TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, and
TimeRendering) for every report's execution time, in this way, we could get to know the performance of each part. Then give some optimization refer to this link
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb522806.aspx

Current CTP version of SQL Azure reporting does not contain processing cache feature. However, product team are considering additional
functionality for the next release as it is valuable for performance.

Besides, one tip of best practice is to choose a Region that is close to the physical location of your business for better performance
when you create the report server, presuming you have already chosen the same location for your SQL Azure database server.

    Hi,
    I have two scenarios.
    Scenario -1

Creating a database in SQL Azure(Cloud model).
    Scenario -2

    Creating a
Database in hosted environment (traditional hosted model)
I have a basic question,Whats the main difference between these two scenarios while accessing data?
    kAPIL

DB:2.54:How Sql Azure Is Diffrent From Hosted Sql Server pd

I am a convert. I admit that I was very sceptical about SQL Azurebut Igave it a try last week and switched one project from a wellknown hoster (a publicly traded company) to SQL Azure.
First thing I noticed was that the performance was amazing. SQL Azure is not onlyless expensive but alsosignificantly faster, has lower latency and much more room for growth. Another important aspectfor meis that the Azure teamfocuses
on providing three core services. A typical hoster focuses on different platforms, different databases, etc. This means they can invest much less time on getting the specific services right, which was the reason I tried out SQL Azure in the first place.
I can only recommend going with SQL Azure. We will for all future projects and eventually convert all existing ones too.

The address is the address of the Parent cursor, v$sql represents the set of child cursors. The unique component of v$sql is the combination of sql_id and child_number. (Technically two sql_text values could hash to the same SQL_ID, but it's extremely unlikely)To answer your question about what is in v$sql, I suggest you start by reading the Concepts manual, then take a look at the Server Reference manual for the definition of V$sqlRegardsJonathan Lewis

Are you referring to a case where a table that is not federated, and then you created multiple shards or splits, the non-federated table should just get replicated to all the newly created shards? If so yes - I think that is how it works. Upon split, the
current non-federated tables do get copied over.
However after that point of the split, updates to that table can happen in the different shards and these are not synced among the different shards. That has to be done manually today. This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights

    if not exists (SELECT COUNT(1) FROM sys.federations fed WHERE fed.NAME = '$(FederationName)')

This is important as I'm using a SQL Database Project in VS 2012 to version control the DB, but want to script the federation as part a post-deployment script. Obviously through or dev / test cycle there will be mutiple subsequent deployments, so I need
to cater for when the federation already exists.
Anyone with any bright ideas as to why the 'CREATE FEDERATION' statement won't work inside an 'IF' block?

DB:2.52:Will We Get The Transactional Logs In The Sql Server Which Is Synced To Sql Azure While Using The Azure Sql Data Sync? 9f

    Hi,
I know that the transactional logs are unavailable to the DBA in SQL Azure(
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/49c3c693-c48b-42aa-a106-d83cbe00ee34/sql-azure-transaction-log?forum=ssdsgetstarted ) .
Consider a Sync Group where all the Tables and Columns in the SQL Azure are synchronized with a SQL Server, and they are Synced frequently so that any change in the SQL Azure database will be reflected in the SQL Server in minutes. Is it possible to have
any logs from the Synced SQL Server which are usually unavailable in Azure SQL. I couldn't find anything about the logs in the documentation - i could be looking at the wrong place.

The tracking tables in Data Sync do not store the changes, they only record the fact that a row change has occurred (i.e., row was inserted/updated/deleted). It doesn't contain details of the actual change that was made.
If you have configured your sync correctly, then inserts/updates/deletes from your SQL Azure should propagate to your on-premise database

DB:2.52:Wcf Data Services With Sql Azure Federation mk

Is it possible to use WCF Data Services with data stored using SQL Azure Federation?
Is there an interception point where it would be appropriate to issue the USE FEDERATION command to configure the database connection to the correct federation member?
For instance, assuming the database model used in the SQL Azure Federation Hands-on Lab, where there is an Orders table federated by Customer Id, could I use WCF Data Services to publish a service over theOrdersentity and, depending on the value
of the Customer property (obtained from the security principal or from the query filter) issue the USE FEDERATION command to connect to the appropriate federation member?Fernando Correia

    DB:2.52:Dirsync To Office365 And Azure 71

We have successfully set up Office 365 with DirSync and Federation to our domain. All works fine.

We also have an Azure subscription for setting up virtual machines etc. and are looking to sync that directory too.

Will we two separate synchronisations set up? And if so how do we do that with DirSync as the set up wizard doesn't seem to allow you to. Or should we sync Azure to our in-preimse AD then Office 365 to the Azure?

Note that I asked this question on the
Office 365 forums but was directed here.

    DB:2.52:Sql Azure Federation Questions mm

    Hi guys,
On the topic of backing up federated Sql Azure databases, I have recently wrote a blog post on the subject which can be found

    here. The main ideas are:

at the moment, you can only use the
Sql Azure Migration Wizard or the
BCP tool to export your data. The Migration Wizard is an integrated tool that will help easily export both the schema and data of a database. The BCP tool can only be used to extract data from one individual table at a time and if you decide to go for it,
you will need to manually add the code for detecting the tables in the database and for exporting them one by one.you cannot export a federated database as an atomic unit. You can only export the individual instances (be them the root or federation members) at a time.the export process is pretty straight forward, but the restore is a bit more complicated. If you are loosing entire databases, you can recover all their data and schema from the SqlAzureMW export, but the federation related elements (like federations, federation
keys, federation tables, splits) will have to be created manually.the SqlAzureMW also comes with a command line version, which can be used for automated backups. The only catch is that the tool will only make exports to the local disk drive. You will have to write the code to upload the backups to a durable environment,
    like the Azure Blob Storage.

DB:2.52:Windows Azure Mobile Services - Sql Server - Prebuilt Columns sz

am I correct in assuming that tables for WAMS need to be created in the Azure management portal and have some columns precreated. Once the table is created:

is it ok to modify the columns in Visual Studio once the table has been created? Can i just create the necessary items on my own or do I need to go through the management portal all the time? How do i handle foreign keys and such between two tables?

    hi Wally,
    Thanks for posting!
is it ok to modify the columns in Visual Studio once the table has been created?
yes, we could modify our sql database data on the latest version (Azure SDK 2.2 ). You could use VS 2013 and install SDK2.2 to view the data. At the same time, you will
clickAdd Firewall Ruleand a new rule will be automatically added for you.
Please see the blog about this question (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2013/10/22/windows-azure-announcing-release-of-windows-azure-sdk-2-2-with-lots-of-goodies.aspx
    ).
Can i just create the necessary items on my own or do I need to go through the management portal all the time?
The answer is yes . If you want to manage your SQL database by azure portal, you could find your database form

SQL Azure, and click the Manage to manage your DB. Like this image:

How do i handle foreign keys and such between two tables?
you could handle foreignsuch asusing SQL. Refer to this page (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/48772/how-do-i-create-a-foreign-key-in-sql-server
    ).
    Hope it helps.
