    Yes, it's true. For one, there is no Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows Phone. Two, unless you developer unlock the device and start loading apps from outside the Marketplace, there is such a minute chance of malware in the Marketplace since Microsoft
    has to approve all apps that get accepted.
    That doesn't mean you should not continue safe web browsing practices! Don't visit shady sites, always check the URL to ensure you're on the site you want to be before inputting a password and don't cough up personal info unless you know it's a safe site.
    The
    Microsoft Security Essentials forum would be happy to give some safety tips if you ask.

    You may not like it but this is your best option. Flatten the HD or in other words format the HD and reinstall everything. You don't know what has been placed on the machine that is undetectable.

    Kaspersky 2012 IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 8.

    Hi Steven,

    1. How did you try to reinstall Windows 8? Did you use any recovery disc or partition?
    2. Which recovery are you referring to, when you say "showed on recovery that there was zero mb used"?
    3. What is the make and model of your computer?

    This issue may occur if any system files or the hard disk itself is corrupted.
    If you are able to boot in normal mode, let’s try running a check disk and checking if it helps to fix the issue.
    a. Press Windows Key + X.
    b. Select Command Prompt (Admin).
    c. Type the following command from the command prompt and press enter.
    chkdsk /f /r X:( drive letter)
    d. Press Y when you are prompted to check the disk the next time that the system restarts.
    e. Restart the computer and check for the issue.
    Important: While performing check disk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

    Youmay also upload the mini dump files from "C:\Windows\Minidump" on the SkyDrive for further assistance. Also provide the link for the uploaded file:

    DB:3.03:My Windows 8 Laptop Wont Start Up cs

    Hi JonathanHearrell,
    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.
    In order to help you better please provide us the following information:
    1) Do you get any error message?
    2) Are you able to boot to your desktop?
    3) What was the recent change made to the computer prior to this issue?
    I would also request you to disconnect all the external devices connected to your computer.
    To fix this issue you can follow these steps:
    The computer should boot up fine with windows 8 DVD because the source for booting is different. So if the computer is not booting up from windows DVD then it could be a setting in BIOS which is not compatible for booting from windows 8 DVD or it is a hardware
    fault.
    I would suggest you to load BIOS defaults and try booting up from windows 8 DVD. If the computer boots then follow this steps and check.

    Method 1: Safe Mode
    a) Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8 from it.
    b) In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
    c) Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    d) Select advanced options.
    e) New windows will open which says Startup Settings.
    f) Choose an option says Enable Safe mode.
    g) if the issue does not persist in safe mode, perform clean boot.
    If the computer boots to the desktop in safe mode, try a clean boot (Method 2)

    Method 2: Clean Boot
    If you’re able to get on the desktop, then perform clean boot to identify if any 3rd party service is causing this issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    Note: After performing the troubleshooting steps in clean boot, follow Step 3 from the link to start the computer to Normal start up mode.
    Important: Reset the computer to start as usual.
    Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.
    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.
    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.
    c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.
    d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.
    If the computer does not boot into safe mode, Then try method 3

    Method 3: perform an Automatic repair.
    Perform an automatic repair using Windows 8 bootable DVD or USB drive and check if that helps.
    a) Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8 from it.
    b) In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
    c) Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    d) Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

    Thanks

    Well, based on the limited info given, it is hard to know precisely what the problem could be.

    What OS did you upgrade from?

    What version of VirusScan Enterprise did you have installed prior to the upgrade, and what patches were installed?

    Though not fully supported, the only version that is claimed to work with Windows 8 is VSE v8.8 SP2. Is that what you started with?

    Is this system connected to ePO and has the ePO server been updated to handle Windows 8 and VSE v8.8 SP2?

    One possible thing that may help, if you are using VSE v8.8 SP2, would be to download the SDatnnnn.exe file and install it. This will update the Dat version, but might also fix issues with corrupted communications which could be the cause. Follow this link to the SuperDat files:

    http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security-updates/security-updates.aspx?regi on=us

    You may need to execute sdat6914.exe (today's version) with the /F parameter. This 'forces' the install regardless of versions currently installed, even downgrading if that is the case.

    Post back and let us know how you are doing.

    Thanks,

    Ron Metzger

    Hello kat3,

    Welcome to HP support forums !

    Antivirus software generally works OK with Windows 8 but it strongly depends on what the product is - is it the Norton that may have come with your HP computer, or the built-in Windows Defender, or some other product.

    There are really many reasons why the antivirus is turning off ( it may have got corrupted, there is some software conflict, the license is not OK, your computer might be infected with malware). If you want we can investigate in-depth and understand what the issue is and fix it after that.Regards,IT_WinSec

    A friend of mine who has recently (3 months ago) purchased a new Windows 8 P.C. he told me last week to take a look at it, it won't boot anymore, he said he installed an application from the Windows Store which asked him if it could install a file in a folder
    and it acted as a virus, I mistrusted his statement but I want to know ¿is this possible? ¿what can we do against it?

    I know that Windows 8 applications are sand-box'ed and virusses shouldn't be able to infect the entire system, ¿can an app installn an infected-file in a (library-)folder from their server(s)? His computer hasn't booted and he sent it back to the store he
    bought it, but they also have no idea how to solve it, he worked on older P.C.'s and
    never had a virus before, I'm hoping someone could explain this situation.

    P.S.

    He also lost the name of the app that caused this, otherwise I told him to report it ¿will he be able to view this (particular/peculiar) app in his purchase list somewhere online?

    DB:2.96:Windows 8 App Virus x3

    Hi,

    Usually Windows defender will come built into the computer. You can see the purchased apps from the store to see which app have caused the issue. Apps which comes from the store will not have any virus. The computer might have got virus from when he is using
    Internet or the computer might have got hijacked or some files on the computer might have got corrupted and computer might have gone to no boot situation.

    FBI MONEYPAK RANSOMWARE VIRUS
    I had this virus enter my Windows notebook 8/26/2012 with Microsoft Security Essentials in full operation. I was doing some research with google searches and opened a web page and this virus came into the Windows XP operational system (no warning).
    How come MSE did not stop it or give me a warning or notice? The virus version I was infected with was so bad it would not allow me to start in” safe” mode, and the only way I could shut down the notebook was to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. I
    was using Windows XP will all the Microsoft security updates. The only way I could remove this virus was to do a complete restore from an external back up drive“sector by sector restore”...as you know if safe mode is not available there is no way to run a
    virus removal program...that might be able to remove this virus. . I think this virus changed my registry files on its own, and locked out the safe mode, or maybe safe mode was corrupted when I had to hold down the power button to turn off the notebook after
    the virus locked up my system. I could not even get into task manager to work with the control,alt.delete...I was completely locked out with the FBI virus screen, even on a normal re-boot it would come up locking up the notebook OP system. This is the worst
    virus I have had to date. My final question is there anyone at Microsoft working to update the MSE- DAT files for this ugly virus?

If you can't start the computer into "normal" windows, try installing, updating, and running the scans AFTER the computer is started into Safe Mode.. I use the sites below to download the installer file and the manual updater:Once downloaded and before transferring them to the problem machine, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "Gogetum.exe", then copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive.. Transfer the file to the problem machine, then install the "Gogetum.exe" file, then run the update to get the program current.. I think the OS crash is due
    to a bad compatibility betweenWindows 8 and Avast.
    I have not figured if it can also be
    related to the cache SSD.

    Anyway, try to uninstall it, clean
    the registry, and install a new version.

    With the exponential increase in the number of Malware being released on a daily basis it is a challenge for any AV Vendor to stop or find every threat before it impacts someone. All vendors are getting more aggressive with generic and heuristic style signatures to provide better proactive detections for customers, but the aggressiveness of those signatures do need to be measure against the possible false positives that may come from them as well. It's always a fine line to walk, proactive detection vs. false positives. We know that having a false positive in signatures files can often be more devastating to systems then an actual infection is, so we do have to maintain a high level of testing to avoid this as much as possible.

    In short, there is no AV vendor that is always going to be first to market with detecting all new threats.

    I am working on a document to post to the Community about the growth in Malware that will hopefully help people truly understand the onslaught of Malware that we are seeing today.

    All of that being said, if you do get Malware on your system that McAfee does not detect, my recommendation would be that if you know the file causing the problem, to get it submitted as soon as you can to virus_research@avertlabs.com. The file needs to be put in to a password protected .zip file and the password should be "infected" without the quotes. This will get the sample in to the research organization and will allow them to review it and get it added in to the DAT files.

    Hi,

    I would suggest you to perform a full computer virus scan with Windows Defender Offline. This can help remove hard to find malicious and potentially unwanted programs using definitions that recognize threats. Definitions are files
    that provide an encyclopedia of potential software threats. Armed with definition files, Windows Defender Offline can detect malicious and potentially unwanted software, and then notify you of the risks.

    Hello all. For two weeks now I've been trying to help an 84 year old veteran fix his virus infected 2 year old Windows 8 Gateway (Walmart) desktop.

    The poor old guy was a first time PC buyer when he purchased this PC two years ago, didn't comprehend the implications of not renewing his anti-virus 60 day trial version. Consequently after continuing to operate his PC online for almost two years afterwards, he got badly infected. I went over there to help him a couple of weeks ago it was obviously infected. I installed Malewarebytes, which found over 2100 malewares 7 trojans...

    I've used factory restore from both inside Windows 8 from boot, it of course works but won't validate Windows 8 once it completes. I've even tried clearing cmos to no avail.It simply cannot read the encrypted product ID key from the UEFI bios.

    I could go into another (horrible) story about the third party out of warranty support vendor Acer references on their site, but really what good would it do at this point?

    DB:2.89:Thread: Virus Found In X64 Version Of Agent 9p

    We are testing Windows Vista Business x64 and the Zenworks 10 agent (x86_64 Architecture (64 bit)) Standalone. We have AVG 8 Network edition installed on the machine and when it does a system scan, it finds that c:\\Program Files (x86)\\Novell\\Zenworks\\bin\\NalShell.dll is infected with the virus Downloader.Swizzor. Has anyone else seen this? I was going to make an exception in AVG, but according to the docs, since it is classified as a virus, no exception can be made.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    DB:2.89:Thread: Virus Found In X64 Version Of Agent 9p

    I have reported and submitted the file to AVG.COM.

    Unfortunately, they do not provide any email addresses or phone numbers.

    Just a webform, so I have no idea how long until they read it, if ever.

    I have an annoying virus that I can't get past to try any malware removal tools on. When I click on them another just pops up. Now after user sign in I get what appears to be the blue screen of death. Any suggestions?

    Hi Boatman4:

    My best advice wipe the disk completely with DBAN and
    re-install Windows 7 and then install AV protection, otherwise
    it will take time to completely remove the malware virus,
    and you might NOT even success,

    I would like to give you some suggestions and teach for
    good PC protection.

    Tools:
    DBan – Use this tool to wipe out the disk completely. It will Zero the
    magnets on the physical disk.

    DBan: http://www.dban.org/

    For good AV, I suggest and recommend Kaspersky® Internet Security 2010.
    For a more light-weight and for a simpler AV I recommend Microsoft®
    Security Essentials (MSE).

    Kaspersky:
    http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky_internet_security
    MSE: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

    Keep the Firewalls turned on.
    Keep Windows® up-to-date.
    Keep third-party software up-to-date, a good online service
    to keep them updated is Secunia®.

    Secunia: http://secunia.com/

    User restricted users on the PC. Please add a password to your account
    and (encrypt) you data.

    I also recommend that you constantly (or very often) backup your PC
    using Acronis® True Image Home 2010.

    Acronis:
    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

    Something else:
    Keep up the knowledge.
    Be careful on Internet.

    I hope you find this information useful. If you need any further assistance,
    please feel free to contact me and let me know.
    I hope this information was helpful…
    Have a nice day…

    I have a Dimension 3000 and I installed AVG free edition anti-virus by a friend recommendation. The daily scan results have showed a virus but with the free edition it does not give me an option to clean this virus. What program can I install or use on this computer to clean the virus.

    DB:2.88:Anti-Virus 98

    AVG Free works with options to clean/quarantine/and delete from the Vault. However, as ky331 explained, that is not possible in all cases. We are seeing a lot of infections that are using hidden files that are protected by others. None of the AV programs have been good at completely removing these, so it takes manual removal with some specific tools.

    1. What is name of the reported virus?
    2. WHERE is the virus located?

    Try scanning in Safemode and see if AVG will clean it in Safemode.

    Thanks, I haven't tried an external monitor, but will now. The sudden appearance of the "screen blocker" while I was online may be just - as suggested - the screen went bad. Download, install, update and scan with each of the two programs below to check for/remove Malware/spyware.
    If necessary, do all the above work in Safe Mode with Networking.

    To get into Safe Mode with Networking, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow key to get to
    Safe Mode with Networking from list of options, then hit ENTER.

    Read all info below before starting:

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

    Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
    Download the Free Version from the link above.
    Download, install, update and scan once a fortnight.

    How to use Malwarebytes:

    1.Open Malwarebytes Click on the Update Tab across the top get the latest updates.

    2.On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Performfull scan option is selected and then click on the
    Scan button to start scanning your computer

    3.MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while.

    4.When the scan is finished a message box will appear

    5.You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the Malware
    removal process.

    6.You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the
    Show Results button.

    7.A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown

    8.You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require
    a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

    9.When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

    10.You can now exit the MBAM program.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
    Spybot Search Destroy 1.6.2 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
    Download, install and update it.
    Then SCAN with it.
    Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.
    Important re: Safe Mode
    If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
    To get into Safe Mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
    RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S D while in Safe Mode.
    If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:
    Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating Programs to remove them.
    If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (from F8 list of Startup Options), and install, update and scan from there.
    We can tell easily with this:
    We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.
    Download the zipped file from here: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt
    Or....If you prefer an .exe version (saves a lot of time for novices) download the file from here:
    http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
    Please unzip Hijackthis.zip or move the hijackthis.exe file into a new folder you create in the root (first) level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results. Don't place it on the Wallpaper, in a temp folder, or in the root level of the C: drive or the My Documents folder. It will create many backup files and they need to be stored in a unique Hijackthis folder.
    Hijackthis FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:
    http://russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm
    After downloading, and unzipping the hijackthis file into a safe folder you create (preferably a folder named HJT in the first level of the C: drive)...run Hijackthis, click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button.
    Copy and paste the contents of the text file you save into a reply to this message. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste at http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt
    Special Notice! Hijackthis is a powerful tool that edits the brains of Windows (the Registry). DO NOT FIX anything in the Hijackthis log screen without assistance from the experts! Most of the line items in the scanned log are normal for Windows operation. Hijackthis should identify the vast majority of your problems and enable us to help you clean them off your system.
    Let me start out by saying I may have bit off more than I can chew.
    I bought the windows 7 upgrade (disk version) to attempt to upgrade from the current XP version that I have. The main issue is that the XP computer has a virus and that it will turn off when running anti-virus or when the computer is on longer
    than 8 minutes. I have attempted to run safe mode but that does not work, the computer will turn off.
    If anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it.
    See Mr X's reply, but let me add the following:
    Although you can use the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD if Windows XP is
    installed, you can not do an upgrade with it. Your only choice is a
    clean installation (what Microsoft is now calling a custom
    installation).
    DB:2.86:Which Virus Protection To Use On New Lenovo Yoga 2... - Best Buy: Unboxed 19
    I bought a lenovo yoga 2 laptopa month ago. I have only turned it on twice for lack of time. I am anxious to go on line BUT I don't know what virus protection I should be using. It came with free Mcafee for six months but for some reason I purchased "Secure Anywhere" virus protection when I bought the Lenovo. Now I have read on line that some people are erasing the Mcafee and just using the Microsoft firewall and Windows Defender that was provided with Windows 8? To top it all off I looked on line and see that Kaspersky was the highest rated virus protection for 2014. Please advise. Thanks a bunch!
    DB:2.86:Which Virus Protection To Use On New Lenovo Yoga 2... - Best Buy: Unboxed 19
    Also, something I forgot to post in my other post is this...I had a Microsoft expert once tell me on a forum that "as long as you don't go looking for trouble, you won't get trouble" this is so true on the internet.Logic states that if you use the internet for good items and for everyday tasks that are normal you for the most part should be safe. Not to say bad advertisements can't infect you still on hacked websites but for the most part browse safely and know what you are clicking.Don't go to websites that look questionable, always look at an address link. If you don't know the link, or if it has a strange domain (.blah, .blahs.instead of something like .com, .org. net .info even maybe ) then there is a good chance that it may have malicious intent.Good judgement will always be your best protection. A common error in humans alike is that we depend on software such as anti virus to protect us when it can't 100%. It will stop 99.99999% things if you have the best software but that.0000001% can still happen if you aren't practicing good measures in the first place or doing something you probably shouldn't be.
    DB:2.86:Thread: Anti-Virus Strategy 8a
    Hi,
    Very soon everyone has a windows mobile device.
    Very soon there will be a nice virus for these devices.
    I do not have the feeling that groupwise is protected well enough with the
    groupwise mobile security.
    What is the anti-virus strategy for this environment?
    Is running an anti-virus client on windows server 2003 with on-access
    scanning sufficient?
    Do I\'ll have to run anti-virus on the pda?
    Do I need to run aditional software on my netware 6.5 server to prevent
    virusses getting into my environment?
    We have Sophos anti-virus running.
    I\'d love to hear comments on this.
    thanks,
    Vera
    DB:2.86:Thread: Anti-Virus Strategy 8a
    We do not use any anti-virus on the groupwise server.
    Email arrives on a separate host, where it\'s scanned and then is sent to
    the groupwise server. By using pda\'s users easily can transmit virusses
    into our groupwise server, as it goes directly from pda to gms to groupwise
    server.
    The server itself isn\'t prone to viruses. If the workstations connecting
    to it have the antivirus running, you should be quite safe.
    I just learned that I have virus protection with virus defintions and not an anti-virus, will it hurt anything to download an anti-virus?
    DB:2.85:Virus Defintions And Anti-Virus 77
    Hello Donna,
    Virus definitions are what anti-virus programs use to keep your system clean, so they are not a program but data used to remove viruses. It sounds like you do not have an anti-virus program. Please download
    Microsoft Security Essentials and install the program. This will protect you from getting viruses.
    I hope this helps,
    I downloaded the Visual Studio 2012 and Windows Phone 8 SDK off the Microsoft Official website. I have a 64 bit pc running Windows 8 but every time I try and install I get this:
    My Anti Virus has been disabled... I run everything as the Admin, so I ow have no idea what is going wrong. Please help
    DB:2.85:Cant Install Visual Studio 2012 On Windows 8 1m
    Hi Awesome,
    The error occured when you installed VS Express 2012.
    Please follow these steps:
    1. Update your windows and disable Anti-Virus software(you have done it).
    2. Use ISO file to install VS Express 2012.
    Before you install it, I suggest you use this tool
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290 to verify hash of the ISO. The point of the exercise is to generate a hash value (SHA1) from the ISO file so that it can be checked against the known value for that file. Any discrepancy would indicate that the file
    was corrupted.
    3.Clear your %temp% folder.
    The %temp% folder is a reference to the Temp folder associated with the current user. To clear it, do the following:
    Sign on to your system with the Administrator user account you will use to run the installer. Click the Start Orb and type %temp% in the search box. The search results will show the Temp folder you want. Click on the Temp folder to open it in Windows Explorer,
    then delete the entire contents.
    4.Run the setup file as administrator to reinstall it.
    5.If the installation stillfails, please use
    http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the latest installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to
    https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link here.
    Recently, my one Skype friend sent me a message, it was an image.
    This is its name:
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    So I called him. He said he didn't remember sending it.
    So, time went by, and another friend sent me another image:-
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    So, I declined it. Then he messaged this:-
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Then, guess what? He sent me another one:-
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Skype:- Windows Desktop Version / Windows 8 App (I use both)
    What is going on? Is this a virus? I have not downloaded the file, only canceled the image so it won't download. How can I stop getting files and auto-downloading them?
    Thanks!
    [EDIT] BTW I cannot set my settings to "Calls from contacts only" as that would defeat the purpose of having Skype[/EDIT]
    Hi all,
    I recently bought an XPS 8500 with windows 8. It came with a garbage trial version of Macaffee virus protection. Windows 8 comes pre-installed with Windows Defender. However you cant have both. The Macaffee trial subscription recently expired, however it is not readily apparent how one removes macaffee or activates Windows Defender. Each time I get to what seems like a relevant window, it only says Windows Defender cannot be used simultaneously with Macaffee, but there is no apparent way to switch from Macaffee to Windows Defender. Please help.
