DB:2.88:I Am New In Portal Development . From Where To Start z1

    Seemab,

I feel your pain. After having been at this for a couple of
months, here's what I have to offer you.

    0) Watch every single one of the portal tutorials on this
website. They are little movies and slide shows with tutorials
and actual application walkthroughs that were EXTREMELY HELPFUL
to me and my team in the absence of formalized training. They
    were really great.

    1) Take a few days and read every single white paper that you
can about Oracle 9iAS Portal and its architecture.

    2) Use the portal interface to create groups and users.

    3) Experiment with as many aspects of the portal interface that
you can. This will help you see the strengths and limitations
of portal, and where you may need to focus your development
    effort.

    4) Create database objects like tables by using the portal
interface. Create an LOV off of one of the tables, and use it
in a form. This is all just general stuff that helped
    familiarize me with portal.

    5) Publish different kinds of documents to the portal.

    6) Create a PL/SQL item in a portal. Educate yourself on the
HTP and HTF procedures and functions to print things to the
    screen dynamically.

    7) Most important of all, download as many pieces of sample
code as you can and install it to portal. On this website you
will find numerous instances of sample portlets and
applications. You will learn what it takes to install Java-
    based providers, servlets, and others.

    8) Using a good PL/SQL tool like SQL*Navigator or TOAD, browse
your way through the PORTAL30 data dictionary, going through all
of the tables and especially the packages. This will help you
learn where you need to write code to interact with the
    underlying objects in Portal.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific than that, but you can really
be on your way to becoming a well-rounded portal developer by
experimenting with these things that I have listed.

    Good luck!

    Sincerely,
    Adrian Klingel

    Hi.

FWIW, it's more likely that WLS has not been tested on Mandrake. I can't
think of a reason it wouldn't work on Mandrake, but it is not a supported
Linux distribution, so you won't have many options if you have problems.

Perhaps someone else reading this group can tell you if it works.

No you don't need a separate user. Just a shell script to change the environment.

This is fairly standard on all unix platforms and is covered in the manuals, generally you run .oraenv or .coraenv which is really just a shell script which resets the environment.(theres probably a bash shell script for linux I haven't checked). However you can write your own to suit you needs. Generally the format is that the script it prompts you for an instance name and sets the environment approppriately but it could prompt you for anything.

    for example
echo "which environmnet do you want"
    read OENV
    case $OENV in

    Hello,

We have Oracle 9iAS (including Jserv so we can run Java servlets) up and running.

We also have an Oracle 8i DB up and running.

I understand that the Servlets that are running in the Jserv engine can talk to the Oracle 8i DB via JDBC and return rows of data back BUT, what if I want a Servlet that is running in the Jserv engine to be able to "talk to" a Java Stored Procedure that is running in the Oracle 8iJVM?????

Sorta like an API or something that will let my Servlet that is running in the Jserv JVM pass and receive objects to the Java Stored Procedures that are running in the Oracle 8i DB JVM.

What are my different options??? RMI, is there a way to do it via JDBC, etc.?????

Is there ANY info about it out on the web?????

    Thanks much!!!!

    9iAS Infrastructure installation:

    1. Edit $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh. Search for defs, you'll see a line like this

    LD_SELF_CONTAINED="-z defs"

    change it to

Linking and all auto configurations went smooth after this.

    3. Repeat step 1 from above for this installation.

    Hi!

I recently tried a Apache/JServ + Oracle8i combination instead of the ever crashing OAS.
My OAS-development is done on Solaris 7 with OAS 4.0.8.1 but I did not want to mess up this environment so to test I installed Apache 1.3.2+JServ 1.1.2+BD JDK 1.2.2+Oracle8i 8.1.6.1 on a Linux machine (Mandrake 7.1).

Setting everything up was not to troublesome (not problems with the installer or anything).

A definitive shock was the time deployments from JDev 3.1 to 8i took. A rather small bean took several minutes to deploy. And I had complained about the sluggishnesh of OAS deployment!!

Next came the fact that I would have to rewrite transaction handling, 8i forces J2EE/JTS style transactions for simple DB-access. Not nice at all if one tries to keep container overhead down.

But worst of all was the time function calls to ejb:s and between ejb:s took. All of it spent just in calling down into the ejb-methods if my debug logs are to be believed.

No apparent swapping was going on and not even a constant high CPU-load. It just took a lot of time ...

Obviously there has to be something wrong with that performance but nothing I could find. The environment is what I would call an "iAS 0.5" and I believe others use this combination.

Any ideas on what is wrong ? Could performance be better (on the order of several 100x) on Solaris or what ?

    DB:2.67:Oracle 9ias 1.0.2.2 Problems 7s

if jserv error_log keeps increasing its size every 10 sec or 30 sec while apache is running, something must go wrong. For example, if the servlet engine need to build a database connection but the database is not up, the whole servelt engine can not be started.

You need to investigate the reasons in all configure files, they are

    mod_ose.conf
    oracle_apache.conf
    jserv.conf
    jserv.properties
    zone.properties

You can comment out some directories in the above files, stop/start apache to narrow the reason.

The technologies it is using are EJB and JMS (swiftmq). This appln is live and working fine. I'm supposed to maintain this site. So i'm trying to set this up on my devt server. The technologies it is using are EJB and JMS (swiftmq). This appln is live and working fine. I'm supposed to maintain this site. So i'm trying to set this up on my devt server. Does someone can install oracle 8i on Mandrake 8.0 ? please help me. Tks !!

DB:2.66:How To Install Oracle 8i On Mandrake 8.0 cz

YESS!! Finaly got it all together! :-)

The solution was to follow the instructions in the glibc-2.1.3 SDK mentioned in my above post and - here is the clue that someone posted another place here:

Do not run 'dbassist' under KDE2.x, but log out of KDE and log in again under GNOME. Apparently the kdelibs also causes major problems for the 'dbassist'. Creating the initial database while running under GNOME was a breeze.
(The whole installation of Oracle 8i could probably be done under GNOME, but I got the software itself installed under KDE2.x)

After that was completed, I cleaned up the alterations I did when using the glibc-2.1.3 SDK.

    I am trying to install 9iAS 1.0.2 on Windows 2000 Professional SP1

    - Oracle 8i Enterprise 8.1.7 is already successfully installed
    - Listener DB services are running
    - I have made modifications required for 9iAS EE in .ora files as per install.pdf

When I choose 9iAS Standard Edition and press Next, the installation proceeds upto the point where it seems to create an ORAINST directory and a cleanup.bat file inside it.

Then, it seems the installation is attempting to write some files that are protected under Windows2000

    Windows gives a message:
"Files that are required for Windows to function properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions... Insert your WIndows 2000 CDROM"

And installation aborts - very frustrating because my Windows 2000 is installed from a network/image and not from a CD; I can't even get Windows 2000 to look at a disk backup of the I386 binaries to push the 9iAS thru

    Any clues?

If you're going to a complete install of Oracle9iAS, you'll want to do the infrastructure first(containing metadata regaring the AppServer, OID etc.) and then the mid-tier second. Assumption being a Windows Platform with 1 GB RAM, 7 GB or higher of diskspace (depending on type of install) then you could install both the mid-tier and the infrastructure on the same box. Otherwise, the recommended approach would be to install on seperate machines.

    hello,

what you could look into is the XML report customization of
Oracle Reports 6i. you could create an temporary XML file from
your PSP and then run this with oracle reports services.

this would enable you to create reports from your PSP and use
the powerfull features of oracle reports to print or generate
    various file-formats.

in reports 6i the capabilities of the XML definition are limited
to default-layouts. with oracle9i reports you will have full
control over your report. oracle9i reports will be released as
part of Oracle9i Application Server Release 2.

    hi radhika,

While installing oracle 8.1.6, the one of the optional tool database configuration assistant failed.(DBCA-00047 : unable to create destination directories).

so i tried to create database manually.

so i copied init.ora file as initdemo.ora and edited the file as follows:

    db_name=demo

    controlfiles=('/disk1/oradata/demo/system01.dbf','/disk2/oradata/demo/system02.dbf')

    cdump=/disk1/oradata/demo/cdump
    bdump=/disk1/oradata/demo/bdump
    udump=/disk1/oradata/demo/udump

    then i saved the file.

After that i created a script for database creation as "demo.sql" to create database at nomount stage.
    i.e,

    create database demo
    logfile group1('/disk1/oradata/demo/log1.log',/disk2/oradata/demo/log2.log') size 1000k
    group2('/disk1/oradata/demo/log3.log',/disk2/oradata/demo/log4.log') size 1000k
    controlfile reuse;

    and saved it.
I gave the following commonds at the prompt:

    $export $ORACLE_SID=demo
    $svrmgrl

I've installed both Oracle8i and Developer 6i several times without any problems on Redhat 6.1. Since i've been reading quite some posts on problems with Mandrake I personally would go for the Redhat distribution.

I usually install different products in separate Oracle Homes and adapt the .bash_profile so that I can switch between homes. You can do the same by using different scripts to set the environment

I've successfully installed 9iAS EE on a different box from the 8i database. Both the servers are running on linux 6.2.

    My questions are:

    1. How do I test that the 9iAS is talking to the origin database. Are there some kind of test scripts provided?
    2. As this environment supports a web-based application, I want to check that I can access the database through the Apache webserver and 9iAS. How can I test it?
    3. How do I test that Database cache is caching tables properly?

Check if a simple servlet is running fine for you. For that check the following URL,
    http://(host):(port#)/servlet/IsItWorking
    with exact the same case.

If this is not working, then there could be some misconfiguration in your Apche-Jserv files which is causing the failuire for JServ. To find the cause, further you may need to look into various log files located in $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Jserv/logs and $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/logs.

    There won't be a release1 to release2 upgrade path
until the release of 904 of release2. This is INCORRECT. The FINAL step of the Release 1 to Release 2 upgrade path for Oracle9iAS Portal will be made available with Portal upgrade release version 9.0.2.6, NOT 9.0.4. This 9iAS Portal version 9.0.2.6 is scheduled to be available during this Q1 Calendar year 2002.

It is important to note that customers can begin the upgrade process TODAY, using the steps outlined in detail in the "Oracle9iAS Release 2 - Preparation for Upgrade" white paper.

The link to the white paper is below:

    http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/OTN_CONTENT/MAINPAGE/DEPLOY_PERFORM/PREP_UPGRADE_R2_0.PDF

With the availability of Portal version 9.0.2.6, customers will be able to perform the final step of the Portal upgrade process - upgrading their existing Portal 3.0.9.x portal repositories to 9iAS Release 2, Portal version 9.0.2.6.

    Hi Giridhar

While you can definitely use PSP to generate HTML-based reports, PSP is mainly designed for general script page development in PSP.

For you need, you may want to consider Oracle Portal product, which enables you to produce sophisticated, HTML-based reports which require virtually no programming at all. IMO, it will probably satisfy your needs.

Can we do it on it .
    RegardsHR/BLOCKQUOTE

I don't see why not. I used to use Red Hat and it worked the same.

Say you want to start the database, open a terminal and do something like

    su - oracle
    give password

    . setupdbenv
small script you write to set your SID, ORACLE_HOME, etc

then start the database in that terminal.

Similarly, for Oracle9iAS, log on using the correct user (root?), set the environment using something like . setupiasenv, and do the apachectl thing.

I have 5 different Java environments I can setup in this way. Would be impossible if I used .bashrc or .profile to setup my environments.

    Cheers,
    Malte

What version of VMware Workstation are you running?

    4.0.5 or 4.5.1?

Did you install the VMware tools in the guest?

Are there any errors in the vmware.log file for the virtual machine?

    Please provide more details

    DB:2.58:Install Oracle 8i R2 On Mandrake 7.1 p3

    Hi,
    I tried to install 8i R2 on mandrake 7.1.
My problem is after run ./runInstaller, I could see Oracle Universal Installer. Even though I click on 'Next' button, it doesn't move at all. It looks like no button on installer is working.

Anyone knows solution for this problem?

    Thanks,

FIrst, make sure you ahve the proper users/groups set up and the appropriate permissions for each. Next, run, don't walk, to
    http://www.arsdigita.com/ad-training/acs-install/oracle

This guide is excellent and I followed all of it except the date formatting bits. Also, try the oracle and database installations under Gnome and not KDE- this worked for me for some reason.

    Good luck!

    DB:2.58:Dbassist On Mandrake Linux 7 s7

I have installed 8i (using the Macmillan distribution) on Mandrake Linux 7 (based on Red Hat 6.1?).
When running dbassist to create the database,
as expected I get the JNLS error. However when I ignore it (by clicking OK), rather than it continuing, it then fails with a Null Pointer exception. I have tried both 1.1.6_v5 and 1.1.8_v1 releases of the JRE. Has anyone got a workaround for this?

You do not have to use dbassist. See Section 3.7 of my help pages:

I do not trust KWrite's whatever even a bit. Please use 'vi' or another plain text editor to edit files, and 'ls -la' to list directory contents. Plus post output of 'ifup -a' run as a host, output of 'lspci', output of 'lsmod' and output of 'ifconfig -a'.

Is my 9iAS(9.0.2) J2EE applications can be migrated to 10gAS(10.1.2) without any changes? If no what are the changes required in my applications (Programs).
My Application consists of 9 War files and one DAD(which is pointing to Oracle DB for Some PL/SQL Stuff, i dont think which will cause any compatibility, bcoz we are planing to migrate the Application server only.).
And I am interested on Linux platform.
