On friday evening I thought I was going slightly nuts hearing a strange ticking noise, after much gentle wobbling of pc chair, desk etc I tracked the noise down to my PSU. It was intermittently ticking away (i.e. not constantly ticking, and even when ticking not always same frequency of ticks). It's since got louder and seems more noticable under load.

    DB:5.02:Hx850 Ticking k1

You're not going to fry the PC, but it's certainly not normal. The sound is definitely something arcing with the low the current resulting in a slower click noise. Still... If that's a component that's failing or about to fail, better to be safe than sorry and do an RMA.

    DB:4.50:Ticking Noise On New A115z 11

This is exactly the issue I¿m having with my new A115Z. It¿s not really a HUGE problem, but a minor annoyance.Every so often, the laptop emits a sliding clicking noise, followed by a little beeping noise. It¿s coming from what seems to be the lower left corner of the base unit. Just to the left of the touch pad, under the keyboard, I guess. It sounds like a hard drive, DVD Drive, or some similar device initialising. However, The main issue is that it doesn¿t just happen once, it continues to keep making the noise. Sometimes it chirps away several times a minute. Sometimes it¿ll go for half an hour or so without making a noise. The regularity of it¿s clicking and beeping seems to have no bearing on what I¿m actually doing. It¿ll sometimes do it loads while sitting idle, and then keep quiet while I¿m working. And vice versa. For the record, my hard disk is an IDE HITACHI (HITACHI_DK23FA-60), 60GB (partitioned into two 27.9GB drives plus a third Sony recovery partition, I think? ), running version 5.1.2535.0 drivers, and in the ¿Policies¿ tab of the drive¿s ¿Properties¿, the ¿Optimise for performance¿ option is ticked and ¿Enable write caching on the disk¿ is ticked.Well, it¿s not a huge problem, but it is a noticeable annoyance. It¿s rather like trying to work with a Furby sitting next to you. Apart from this, I¿m loving my new VAIO!

Anyway by installing this driver, I have now evidence that it's a driver problem, not a hardware problem but I would like to be able to install the latest driver. It is probably the HDD stepper motor. It is quite commonplace for them to make a ticking sound and it does not indicate any fault.

Set top boxes do not use the HDD in teh same way as PCs so there is no need for defragmentation, nor is there any way to carry one out.

Sometimes moving the box a little can reduce the volume of the noise if it is bothersome.

If it made that noise after purchase, it should have been returned. Now it probably needs warranty service, except for a single possibility - please continue reading:)

You haven't mentioned any results from running the Apple Hardware Test, nor have you indicated any report in System Profiler's "Diagnostics" so I'm not sure how anyone can help without more detailed information.

However, I can make an educated guess that you have an older model MacBook, perhaps the 2.16GHz model that was produced prior to November (you can tell by the serial number, or by the processor speed), and you have downloaded the EFI firmware update but not installed it because you continually shut down your machine when it tries to install the firmware update. Unlike software updates, firmware updates do not install as part of the downloading process.

Information from the main MacBook Support page:
About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs

You can check your Boot ROM Version reported in the Hardware Overview of System Profiler against the version (probably MB21.00A5.B07) that should be showing after the firmware update has installed.

Cannot claim the warranty. I was hoping, somebody else might have encountered a similar problem and have an insight into what the problem was related to. Whether it is a hardware issue or something less worrisome. The phone is running fine now, but if it is something serious hardware related problem, will have to do something about it.

I checked the forum and noticed that many people have a similar problem. It is obvious that the Hitachi HDD has a problem considering that there are so many posts complaining about the ticking noise.

I downloaded a firmware update from the Dell download section and upgraded the firmware from Rev. A53A to Rev. A5EA. The newer version (A5EA) is supposed to correct intermittent clicking noise, but the ticking noise is still there even after the firmware update.

DB:4.09:Hard Drive Ticking And Hissing Noise After 2 Days Of Use. 89

    Hello, snakeplisken:

Thanks very much for offering the assistance.

Yeah, I talked to Dell's technical support repeatedly. It is not just a ticking noise, but it is a static-hissing-constant noise that gets played back on the speakers as well!!!

I am set up for a system exchange, but I think the hard drive and AC Power Supply are somewhat faulty. Noise gets 'amplified' when AC is plugged in.
If not plugged in, teh noise is still coming from "within" the laptop as well.

Very strange... And if you have decent speakers that you care about, the static noises and distortions eventually degrade and ruin the speakers themselves.

Thanks very much once again for sharing the info.. I will try the WDC Utility, hope it will help.

    snakeplisken wrote:

The diagnostik prog reported no errors.

    Cause:
This issue is caused by a system initiated power management command being interpreted incorrectly by the hard drive.

There is a solution for that problem as you can see on http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1414p_created=1138984716p_sid=bw*m7pjip_lva=p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MiZwX3Byb2RzPTE5NCZwX2NhdHM9MTMwJnBfcHY9MS4xOTQmcF9jdj0xLjEzMCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWludGVybWl0dGVudCBjbGlja2luZyBwcm9ibGVtp_li=p_topview=1

When i runthe update"wdupd020.zip " from a bootable cd the program reports "No updateable drives attached".

Go into a quiet room and put it on a flat surface. Listen for 2 minutes. You should hear a near constant whirring sound from the bottom right being the hard drive that is slightly dampened when pressing down from the top. You may also hear a faint clicking sound a couple times a minute or so. This is normal and is the aggressive power saving measure by parking the drive heads of Mac OS X and Linux systems. Anything louder may be a sign of hard drive failure.

    Hi Stevemc66

Thanks for getting in contact on the Sky Help Forum about the ticking noise you're getting while watching your Sky TV channels.

I can imagine how frustrating this can be as I wouldn't be able to relax watching my favourite programmes with this happening. You have mentioned that you have two Sky+HD boxes that this is happening with and the noise is not coming from the box but from the broadcast itself. This is very strange indeed.

Can you try disconnecting all of your TV links so that you only have each box connecting to one TV each and let me know if you're still getting the ticking noise? This will either eliminate the possibility of the TV links causing the issue or confirm that this is the case.

I look forward to hearing how this goes.

I kept hearing a ticking noise in my room and did not know what it was coming from. I found out that this power adapter is doing it while plugged in and the machine being turned on. Bad? My system damaged as a result?

I also noticed that the back of the LCD (bottom middle) gets warm when doing stuff. Is that because the battery is right there?

Benchmark test is what the service center does--you know it as a diagnositc. WHY-diagnostic, hlep to pinpoint the problem, aid in resolution, and you get a copy of the repair to know what occurred.

Hi guys, I have a OEM msi gs 70. And I have this weird scratch noise from the cpu area.

Updated both bios and firmware(also EC reset).

I took off the bottom and while the fan was not moving during idle I can tell it makes this unusual scratching/electrical noise.

Also the battery is making this electrical ticking noise, but this only happens when my laptop is 100%.

    Did one cause the other?

I have just sent it back to the company for a RMA. They too dont know what the cause.... Im guessing, theyre going to send it to MSI to replace the motherboard and ac adapter. But it literally sounds like when 2 wires with current going through meet and you have a ticking sound.

I got a dv6 last year. I had some issues and sent it in. When I got it back it was making a noise like you are describing. When I moved it or sometimes if it wasn't sitting level. It sounded like the processor fan to me and sure enough it was. After awhile the bearings in the fan went out and I had to send it in again. I just got it back a fw weeks ago and it was verified that that was the issue. Im not sure if the fan was installed improperly or what but if that is what you are looking at, get it in while you have a warranty still.

Recently my desktop has developed an audio problem. It does not matter which device I use, I get a rhythmic clicking/ticking noise as the file is played. When I use FireFox and access online content such as YouTube, streaming audio is fine. The problem
is with all locally stored content. The hard drive is not the problem; I have two drives and they both click. The noise itself is variable in rhythm and speed from one file to another depending on which drive is used and which file is played. It also is present
when playing .avi files or cd's or dvd content. I have two disk drives (cd and dvd burner) and the input device does not make a difference except in the rhythm of the sound.

    DB:3.82:Rhythmic Clicking Ticking Noise mk

    Hi RhubarbKoznowski,
    1. Which application are you using to play the files?
    2. Since when are you facing this issue?
    3. Were there any changes made prior to this issue?
    Step 1:

Turn Off the clicking sound and then check for the issue.
    a. Go to Start Settings Control Panel Sounds and Audio devices.
    b. Click the 'sounds' tab. In the window, scroll down to 'Windows Explorer' and in the sub menu, highlight 'Start navigation'.
    c. Pull down the drop down box below, where it currently says 'Start.wav' or 'Windows Start' and choose '(none)' instead. Click 'Apply', then click OK, and close the Control Panel.
This should get rid of the clicking sound.
    Step 2:

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to follow the steps outlined in the below article:

on streaming music only e.g. the codec forMPEG Audio Layer-3. I found changing the network buffering setting to 30 secs worked most of the time but sometimes in spite of this WMP starts without buffering (stopping and startingWMP a couple of times seems
to eventually trigger the buffering correctly which then eliminates the 'ticking sound' problem). Seems to be a bug of some kind of some kind in WMP startup when listening to streaming music for me.
I haven't tried disabling the mic but this would not be a great solution for me as I get work-related calls on Skypeoften.

The method in which Skype works may be more bandwidth intensive or require additional settings to improve performance. It may not traverse your Internet routers as well as other services. You may want to check if your connection is relayed. Ideally to get the best performance you need 0 relays otherwise the quality goes down drastically regardless of the speed of your connections. By default UPnP is enabled in the Skype settings. If your router supports it, you may want to make sure it's enabled. Other times UPnP may not work well, if that is the case you can also try disabling it as well as setting up ports for Skype or DMZing your IP to see if the quality gets any better. You can also run a speed test (speedtest.net) on both sides to test if your Internet speed varies at different times of the day.

I intent to use my Fuze a lot for recordings (mostly lectures), so recording quality is important for me.

I tried recording on the one I bought, and I hear a ticking noise (a few ticks a second) and sometimes what seems like electric disturbance if I just record silence. If I recording myself speak, the noise can be heard as well, in the background. No ticking is heard when listening to radio (live or recorded on the player) or music (or lectures recorded on my old c250). I tried three different sets of headphones, including the ones provided in the package. On the ones that came with the package, quality is not as good as with mine, but if you take them partially out of phone jack (which raises the volume), you can hear the ticking.

What’s weird is that the ticking noise is head on both 8 GB Fuze and on 4 GB Fuze which I bought along with it. (Both were bought at Circuit City, if that matters.)

I am not talking about ticking from pushing buttons, moving the players, etc. Nor is it something ticking in the background (a bomb? , because I tried recording in several rooms, including my quiet bedroom.

    DB:3.74:Ticking Noise While Recording cc

Well, I can deal with regular uniform noise. It exists also on my c250. It doesn’t distract if you’re trying to listen back to a lecture or a presentation. Ticking noise does distract.

    hi Cookie5,

    Welcome to the Forum.

HDD clicking noise usually indicates an imminent hard drive failure. It's unusual that you got this issue on a brand new PC. I recommend you consider running a diagnostic on the drive (i.e. via HD Tune). If you find any errors, consider contacting lenovo for service or the place of purchase for a possible replacement unit as the HDD might fail soon.

    DB:3.74:Latitude Fast Ticking Noise 8s

My Latitude D600 is making a ticking noise that seems to be originating from the HDD area. The ticking/clicking noise frequency is about 6 to 7 ticks per second, and it happens intermittently. It's not related to any application loading or closing or accessing the disk. Sometimes it will stop when I press a key, roll the mouse wheel, and other times it will not.

I've seen some firmware updates at Dell.com for older machines that seem to be addressing a similar sounding issue - noise coming from the HDD, but I'm not yet sure if it's the disk. Could it be that the fan's blades are hitting something? Could it be the disk?

    Anyone know?

    Cheers,

    Omar

I have the 20G version yet mine does the same. It's really annoying that when im using the built in mic that it picks up the clicking from the HDD. I saw some firmware update that fixes the clicking but is this for this HDD?

My wife's mac pro has a ticking fan. It's the one in the bottom rear. I'm pretty sure the machine is out of warranty by now.

While cleaning the dust out of the machine improves the noise, it doesn't cure it - the fan still ticks at about a 10 Hz or so rate.

    Hello,

Since today when switching on the Inspiron 5100 (with the latest sound drivers) I hear a very annoying clicking/ticking noise from the speakers, although the sound is working it is very soft! The sound has worked fine for the last 6 months ...

Anyone any idea what I can do about it? Many thanks in advance,

    Reggaenights

    DB:3.70:Clicking/Ticking Noise From Speakers (Inspiron 5100) a1

    reggaenights,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

    Please perform the following:

Update the audio drivers with the latest available from the Downloads tab (above).
Check the mute box under CD audio in the Volume Control window.

    3. This pop/tic is caused by the Sigmatel audio codec entering a powered down state. Gointo the Sigmatel Audio icon in the Control Panel window and remove the check from the Enable Power Management check box. This will not affect battery life when it is disabled (even when it is enabled there is minimal battery life gained).

DB:3.70:Ticking Noise On Long Tracks p1

I have a Sansa Fuze 8GB. On some long tracks, especially Rhapsody subscription tracks transferred to the Sansa, a ticking or clicking noise, about 2 clicks/second,starts to appear about 12 min. into the track. It gets louder and more insistent. At 15 min. the track is unlistenable. I have found that if I hit any button on the Sansa (like the center button), the noise goes away from about 15 seconds, then comes back again. Also, the tracks play through fine on my PC. Therefore I suspect this is a problem with the Sansa. Any idea what's wrong? BTW the firmware is V01.01.11A.

    Thanks

    - bill.

DB:3.70:Ticking Noise On Long Tracks p1

This is a problem with the WMDRM tracks as from Rhapsody, Napster, or from Windows Media Player if copy protection is enabled. The processor is having issues with the longer tracks, related to file size.

I've been working with this issue on the sister machine, the e280v2, with the same processor.

As an interesting workaround, if the Rhapsody / WMDRM track is loaded onto the µSD card on the v2, I can listen to a quiet track!

Hopefully, this will be solved on both machines. Listening to classical, long tracks are quite common.

DB:3.68:Ticking Noise In Inspiron 5100 mk

We recently bought 4 Inspiron 5100s. Three of them make an intermittent ticking noise, one very loud and irritating. I have seen the posts on ticking noises in Inspiron 8500s. Does the advice there also apply to the 5100? We have failed to isolate the fault (assuming it isn't the intended design!) including tightening all the screws removing and replacing any removeable parts opening the DVD drive while the ticking is going on. Nothing changes. Does anyone else have the same experience or can anyone please direct me to a fix? Is this something for which Dell would normally take back PCs as defective? Thanks in advance for advice/help.

DB:3.68:Ticking Noise In Inspiron 5100 mk

Thanks for the tip, Joe. Unfortunately, the ticking noise definitely comes from inside the body of the PC. I checked the adaptor but it is dead silent. I unplugged the adaptor from both the mains and the PC, and the noise continued.

Faint sounds still come of my laptop that can be adjusted with the volume, but it is very faint and overpowered by the ticking. When I try hooking up an external speaker to the system the only sound that comes out is the popping/ticking noise. I have already tried reinstalling the driverse and updating the BIOS. Is there anything else I can do?

DB:3.58: Satellite A300 - Ticking Noise While Trying To Charge sm

    Hi,

Recently my satellite A300 started making a quiet ticking/clicking type noise when it is charging the battery with the laptop is running. The noise is coming from inside the laptop and if I put the charger "brick" to my ear I can hear a noise in it that in in sync with the ticking noise.

The battery doesn't charge while the laptop is running (but clicking on the battery icon says plugged in, charging), The battery tends to stay at whatever charge its at. If I turn it off it will charge up to 100% and while using the laptop and then while using it with 100% charge no ticking noise is present.

I'm guessing its a problem with the power distribution within the laptop. Does anyone have experience of this type of problem or suggestions to how I might fix it?

    Thanks,

    Rab

I have had my imac for about two months now, and in the past week during my morning news reading and tea, I have started to hear this ticking/clicking from he bottom right of my Imac. I move the unit on its base, and the sound stays. It sounds like a fan spinning slowly but clicking/ticking as I hear no other fan noise. I played with a fan utility to speed up the fans, and the cpu fan is right where this noise is coming from. Has anyone experienced this? Anyone have a solution?

DB:3.58:Ticking/Clicking From Bottom Left Of Imac sa

Ok, I've started to notice it as well. Though it seems to be one of those problems that only gets annoying when you focus your attention on it. I only noticed it briefly before deciding to investigate further. Mine seems really faint. I have to put my ear at a certain angle close towards the machine before I can hear it consistently.

The annoying thing with these kind of problems is getting the tech to acknowledge it's existence. For me it's not worth trouble. Really depends on how annoying you find the noise. (maybe your particular machine is producing a more apparent noise)

I don't think it going to lead to anything breaking it's more a matter of personal tolerance.

This should fix your problem. You can also search these forums to find multiple threads about the same issue. They couldn't hear it at the Apple Store because the clicking is intermittent and very quiet.

Unless your issue is like a card in spokes clicking that isn't intermittent you have nothing to worry about. What is happening with you is just the drive head parking while idle or an overzealous sudden motion sensor.
