I have Windows 7 and Office 2010. When in Windows Explorer, I shiftright click on a file and select Open read-only. However the file is not opening read-only. How do I correct this issue? Thanks.

    DB:4.08:Files Not Opening Read-Only kk

Try creating new file with read only attributes :-

    Open MS word 2010

type any matter or copy paste from any where else

    then go to file option

    select save

give the name to a file

Then click on tools which is below the file name bar

select general options ------ Check read only recommended

    Then save your file

Try opening that same file again. it will ask you for the Open in a read only mode YES or NO.

In both Word and Excel, files can be set to prompt the user to open as "read-only" unless the user intends to make changes. This is more reliable than asking users to take special actions to open files as "read only". The link explains how:

    Hi,

Were there any changes made before the issue? Is the issue confined only with Microsoft Office Word files? Which version of Windows you are using?
I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below:

    Method 1:
How to change a read-only file:
a.Find the file you want to edit.
b.Right-click the file and then click Properties.
c.Click the General tab, clear the
Read-only check box, and then click OK.

    Change a read-only file
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-a-read-only-file

    Method 2:
If the issue doesn’t get resolved then you may try performing a system restore to revert back to the correctly working settings, to do that follow the instructions below:

    a. Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click
System Restore in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

    b. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click
    Next.
    c. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click
    Next.

    DB:3.30:Re: Read Only Files mf

Yes, I think it does have to happen.
At a couple points in MDT's history there were required migrations for geometry updates.
For instance there was a required migration for fillets in the MDT3 timeframe.
If you open or want to use any MDT 3 or prior files a mandatory upgrade for the file has to take place.
There was one other such mandatory upgrade along the way as well, if I remember correctly.

We had to add a migration locking DWORD to the registry, but I check there and everything seems to be in order.
It must be something else because it's not every drawing, it's only the odd one, which is strange.

Yes I'm aware of that we've been doing it this way from day one. We do not have access to update those file without opening an Engineer change request, of which we don't want to do. Back in release 4 AutoDesk set it up so I wasn't forced to upgrade old files it would just use them as is. Can we no longer do this? We have an archive of parts/drawings in a sealed directory that we path to for our exploded/assembly drawings, these are parts that are already approved and used. We haven't got this warning since release 4 when you guys fixed it for us now all of a sudden it's back.
"Scott Mollon (Autodesk)" wrote in message news:41473f9f_3@newsprd01...

MDT is trying to open and upgrade the external files to the current format.
This isn't an error but a message to let you know that those files are read only or can not be opened.

I keep getting this error opening some old drawings, we've always had files in 'sealed' directories xref'd into our drawings. Back in MDT4 we had to fix the migration locking but haven't had a problem since, until now. MDT2005. Not sure what's going on....any ideas?

    Hi

I am writing a simple function that will trawl through a directory to make changes to the printer-settings in each *.doc* file, toavoid having to do it manually (approx 1,000 files to be processed).
I don't want to open up read-only files (OK with that using GetAttr) but I also don't want to open up any files that have password protection on them.

Don't know if this is quite what you are asking, but in my office we have been just opening through the usual autocad open command (button or pull-down menu), but when trying to open a drawing it would tell us that it was open, but not who had it open (important in a big office with large teams).

The suggestion was to use the WHOHAS.ARX program, which comes with autocad. You just have to make sure that everybody in your office loads it up (through loadapplications, or perhaps acad.lsp file).

And it also fixed the little problem of being locked out of our own drawings on savings too, which was a bonus (though we are left with a litter of .dwl files through our directories from everytime autocad crashes)

Does the file reside on the Server and not on the client computer?
A test you could try would be to put the document on the client computer shared and see if it can be openedby the server and if you get a alert for the read-only.
There is no doubt a server does handle shared documents differently.
You may need to ask about this on a server forum since I am thinking the client is behaving as expected.

    Hi Hyruslistic,
I would recommend to run a SFC scan to check for corruptions on your system files.

    follow these steps:

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click
    All Programs, click Accessories, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
Allow. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    Hi,

Yes, as long as the applications user has write permission to the folder then your application can change file attributes. At first I wasn't sure so looked it up...

The Write permissions applied to a folder allows users to create a new file or folder (when applied to a folder) and, when applied to a file, to modify the contents of a file as well as its attributes (hidden, system, read-only) and extended attributes.

    Hi,
I it was interesting (and frustrating) that I, intermitantly, got the open file error #7 when I was sitting in a loop opening csv files using ReadFromSpreadsheet file.vi. The ReadFromSpreadsheetFile.vi is a higher level vi which should open the file, read the number of specified lines, then close the file afterwards. IT reads the csv files correctly for one iteration of the outside loop (reads one line from 45 .csv files) then it gives the open file error the second time I try to read them. Perhaps the file is not being closed correctly on the first iteration? This only happens about half the time, and always on the second iteration.

DB:3.13:Error 7 Open File+.Vi When Opening Multiple Csv Files fm

    Hello Greg,

Error 7 indicates the file could not be found - are you moving or deleting files somewhere in your sequence? It's actually better to use dataflow to control your "sequence" of events than to use a sequence structure. It looks like you are building your paths programmatically as well, so that could be part of the problem... you could be building a path to a file which doesn't always exist! I would suggest setting some breakpoints and probes, so you can check your file system against the file paths you're building in your code at strategic times and places. This way hopefully you'll find that the file you're trying to access doesn't exist at the time you're trying to access it - after that it's just a matter of tidying up the logic a bit to make sure that doesn't happen. If you find that file does exist, and you think this is a bug, try to filter out all the unnecessary code so that you have something very simple, and I'll try to reproduce it!

    Regards,

    AG

A 200MB Excel file is rather large.
Password protected files are held in an encrypted form so the workbook has to be unencrypted before it can be used.
Read-only access may result in a temporary copy beingmade of the entire file.
I guess a relevant question would be: is it appropriate to have such a large Excel file?
    - does it contain 200MB-worth of data or is there some bloat in there (e.g. cells formatted beyond the used range on a sheet)
    - if it does contain 200MB-worth of data, might it not be better to store this large amount of data in a database and access the relevant part of it using database queries rather than holding it all in Excel?

    DB:3.11:Checked Out Files Opening As Read-Only 1s

    Gautam,

I don't know what is going on with your system.

I just uploaded an xlsx file to my workspace via a separate browser and then opened it in IE. At that point I was prompted for my network place login - as I had not used WebDAV for a little while.

The trick with the Edit in place is the IE opens a back channle to the server via the WebDAV path - set up in Network Places. and although you open the document OK in the IE - make sure it opens in the App (Excel) and not in the browser window see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=162059 for the way to fix it.

So the key seems to be not opening the doc in the browser and having a network place mapped to https://beehiveonline.oracle.com/content/dav/#

Try it and see if it works.

I'm having problems opening downloaded files. My default is Open Office, which I just updated to Open Office 3, and still had no luck. I tried "open with...", and then "browse" to select the new version of Open Office and doesn't give me the option of
just selecting it, rather it goes to all the different components of the program and I don't know which to chose or when i find one that allows me to select it, a window opens that says "ASCII" Filter Options" and it opens the documents with just a bunch of
numbers in a column, mostly zeros.
I also tried opening it with Microsoft Word, which I don't have, only read only, and it also opens the file with a bunch numbers.
    Thank you for your input!

    Hi,

What is the file extension/type- could it be a compressed file like .ZIP or a binary such as .exe, .com or
a lot others? The extension is the part after the file name - filename.extension

Put the file extension in here - or come back and ask us.

    Hope this helps.

DB:3.11:Issues With Opening Files Read-Only In Excel 2010 Using Windows Explorer (Win 7) mx

We have several files that we work in on a shared network. At times, we would like to open the file read-only. We are having issues opening files read only when accessing them from Windows Explorer. I know in Windows 7 explorer, you need
to Shiftright on an Excel file to get the Open as Read-Only option. However when I select this option, the file does not open read-only, it opens in edit mode as normal.

Bumping this thread. Is anyone able to assist with this issue?
    As you found out (and
others too), this feature no longer seems to be effective in Windows 7. Microsoft appears to have forgotten to remove the item from the context menu. You need to use NTFS permission attributes to enforce a user-specific read-only mode.

I can not open my files when I hit save and read The file opens in Windows media center and can not view the file?

DB:3.11:Opening And Reading Files They Open In Windows Media Center p1

    Hi,
    What is the file format?
Issue is confined to files downloaded off the internet?
What happens when you open the files or shortcuts that are already saved on the computer?
    Method 1:
Fix broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/system_maintenance_for_windows/en-us

    Method 2:
When you run an .exe file on a Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program. Additionally, the icon for the .exe file may not appear as expected. You may also receive additional errors from the .exe file or from the program that
    starts.
To get over with the issue download the ‘Fix It’ from the below given link and run it. This will fix the issue. If the 'Fix It' does not run then try to follow the steps in the article.

    DB:3.10:Re: Opening Read-Only Files cp

When I open a read-only dwg file from Windows Explorer, I get the following warning message:

"[File] is currently in use or is read-only. Would you like to open the file read-only?"

Of course I'd like to open the file read-only. Does anybody know how to keep LT from prompting me with the question every time?

(I know I could open the file through LT and avoid the message, but that's no good for me. I work out of Windows Explorer for LT, Excel, Word, everything.)

DB:3.10:Slow Opening Files That Are In Use. a1

We have Windows 2008 terminal servers with Office 2007 installed. Files open quickly, all most instantly when opening normally. However if a user has a file open the second user experiences a long delay before getting the file in use Open in read
only message. This delay is not present on a windows 2003 terminal servers with office 2003. I experience this in Word but Excel is slowest.
