    Dear friends,

I create a virtual machine template in one ESX Host A, but when I create the virtual machine using the template in ESX host B.

    An error occurs.

Pls. note the ESX host A and ESX Host B don't use the shared storage.

Must the ESX host A and Esx Host B use the storage, to share the template?

    thanks

I have 3.0.1 installed and I need to make a template of a virtual machine and then make a new virtual machine using that template. how would I do that in Virtual client? They said that the Create a template is supposed to be under Commands in the client but its not. I really need to make a template extremely quickly.

Make sure that the Virtual Infrastructure Client is installed on your machine. Start the Virtual Infrastructure Client and then for the Server field specify the NAME or IP Address of the Server where you loaded Virtual Center.

Provide a Windows UserID/Password, initially this will have to be an Administrator Account (either Local or DOMAIN) until you setup the Security via the CLient..

DB:3.50:Virtual Machine Customization Always Crashes fc

    Hi,

When I created a virtual desktop based on a template, the cutomization process (Using a defined customization specification file) does not proceed. WinXP starts and the blue setup screen appears, but then nothing happens anymore, the screen is just frozen. Then I have to reset the virtual machine and after the reboot, the customization starts and runs without problems (Defining the WS name, joining the Domain etc.).

Something very similiar happens when I create a new Template by importing the image from a physical machine. The import runs without problems, then I do some changes in the settings (Limit memory, assigning processors etc). Then I start the reconfigure process (right click on the template and choose "Reconfigure..."). After that I boot the virtual machine. After loading WinXP (WinXP logo with progress bar) the blue setup screen does not appear. Instead the screen keeps black. After a reset of the virtual machine the customization works without problems.

Has anybody the same problem and can help me?

BTW: Where can I download the VDM Agent to be installed on the virtual desktops?

DB:3.50:Virtual Machine Customization Always Crashes fc

Thanks for your answer. Maybe I was not explaining myself correctly inthe first post. I created a template of a physical machinon which I installed all the stuff I need on the Virtual workstations later. The physical machin and as well the template are not joined to the domain. Out of this template I create a virtual desktop which is being customized by a VMWare customization file. After the clone process the workstation starts, shows the login screen for a short while and the goes into the customization process. This is the moment where it stops and just shows the blue customization screen with the Text "Windows is being customized...." (Something like this). Nothing happens anymore and I have to reset the workstation. After the virtual desktop has restarted the customization runs and the workstation is bein customized.

After the custoimization has been finished the workstation is joined to the domain as expected and I can open a console of the virtual desktop (well, the VDI dektop still does not work properly, but this seems to be another problem as I cannot connect using the VMD Client).

VMware Player 2.0 is on par with Virtual Machines created in Workstation 6 from a hardware version compatibility standpoint and so natively create Fusion 2.0 Virtual Machines as well as upgraded Virtual Machines will need to be downgraded to work with products that do not yet support Virtual Hardware Version 7 yet.

CF is a Java application, so it *intrinsically* runs in a
    "virtual
machine", although perhaps not quite in the sense that you
    mean. But the
point is that CF is well-abstracted from even the OS,
    let-alone the actual
kit it's running on, so it will simply be "unaware" that it's
    running on a
VM (in the VMWare sense of the notion).

The requirement would be that the VM meets the minimum OS,
    RAM storage
space spec for CF8. Which I imagine can be easily found on
    the Adobe site.

DB:3.32:Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Error 646 - Slots Are Not Available On The Network Adapters Bus For The Addition Of New Devices. ca

    Hi,
I've set up a test environment at my place of work to evaluate the Microsoft Private Cloud, and am unable to create a virtual machine via a Service Manager Portal request, as the runbook completes successfully butthe job in VMM fails with the following
    error:

    Error (646)
Slots are not available on the network adapters bus for the addition of new devices.
    RecommendedAction:
The network bus cannot support the addition of newdevices.

    Here arefurther details:
I have three XenServer 6.0 hosts which I have added to a host group in VMM, and have installed the integration pack as required. I have installed the Cloud Services Process Pack runbooks in Orchestrator, and the Process Pack itself in Service Manager.
I have created some virtual machine templates from XenServer virtual machines, and have created a single-tier service template which uses this VM template for the only VM in the service.
The network adapter used in the VM templates and the service template is a legacy network adapter, connected to the onelogical networkthat I am using.

When I submit a virtual machine creation request in the VMM 2012 self service portal, the VM is created on one of my XenServer hosts without any issues.
When I 'Request a service' using the Service Manager 2012 self-service portal that I have installed as a SharePoint site, the request goes into Service Manager correctly, and when I complete the relevant manual actions in Service Manager for the request
it is able to create the service VMusing VMM without any issues.
However, when I 'Request a virtual machine' in the Service Manager self-service portal, the runbook 'Create Virtual Machine in SCVMM' is invoked correctly - I can see it running in Orchestrator - but the job in VMM called 'Create Virtual Machine in Cloud'
fails with the error above. In Service Manager, the runbook activity strangely comes up as having completed successfully, but the last activity in the request fails (this is called 'Post Virtual Machine Creation Activity'). I can see no details
in the activity itself as to what this actually does, but I would imagine it is irrelevant and the issue is directly to do with VMM trying to create the VM.

The fact that when a service is created using the same virtual machine template, it completes successfully, suggests to me that the settings that I have in place in the template are correct, and I can see that the relevant runbooks are being invoked and
are working correctly, so could this be something in VMM that I need to resolve? As XenServer creates VMs correctly via the service request or the VMM portal I assume that that is setup correctly too.

I would appreciate any help on this, as I have not been able to find any information on this error.
    Many Thanks
    Matt

UPDATE: I have had to rebuild the Virtual Machine Manager server and both Service Manager servers (management server and data warehouse) for one reason or another, but am still receiving the same error when trying to create a virtual machine using the relevant
request offering. Given that this issue is persistant following a complete rebuild, I would imagine that this issue is related to the Runbooks that are supplied with the Cloud Services Process Pack, as I can still create a VM from within the VMM console without
any problems. As a workaround I will therefore try creating my own runbook for VM requests, but would still appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to how to resolve this error.

DB:3.32:Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Error 646 - Slots Are Not Available On The Network Adapters Bus For The Addition Of New Devices. ca

For anyone that is also getting this error and has found this thread - Microsoft are looking at this for me today, so I will post back with a resolution when I (hopefully) get one.

Is it possible to deploy a new VM from a template (ESX 3.5i using virtual centre 2.5) as a thin provisioned disk by mistake?

We just ran into a situation where a new server was deployed from a template (using the dropdown "deploy virtual machine from this template") some time ago.

Later when the template was deleted, it was discovered that the base disk for the new virtual machine was pointing to the base disk of the template. Since the base disk was deleted, we have now lost the VM that was deployed from it.

This actually appears to have happened once previously and we were unable to determine what happened in that instance eather. I don't see a way that a template can be deployed "thin" from the normal VC GUI.

Ok so the first thing to take into account here is that I'm very new to all this stuff and I've got a project on at the moment that requires me to build a Hyper V server.

So I have built the Hyper V server on a Dell T5500 which is working fine, I've managed to set it up and add it to my domain. The problem I have is that I have a template XP virtual machine that was used on VMware Workstation. I need to convert this template
so that it will work with Hyper-V. Now I really don't know a lot about all this stuff yet, but I've got my head around the fact that I need to convert the .vmdk into a .vhd. I've also seen all these programs you can get so that you are able to this. My problem
is that the directory I have with the template virtual machine has lots of files in it and I don't understand the process I need to follow to get this template over to the Hyper-V server.

So in side the directory with the template in it I have these files:
    Clone of XP Template VM.nvram
    Clone of XP Template VM.vmsd
    Clone of XP Template VM.vmx
    Clone of XP Template VM.vmxf
    vmware.log
    Windows XP Professional-cl1.vmdk
    Windows XP Professional-cl1-flat.vmdk

There is also a folder called: Clone of XP Template VM.vmx.lck........... With an .lck file inside.

If someone can help me understand the process I need to follow to take this template virtual machine from VMware over to work on Hyper-V you will be a life saver!?
I have looked around on the forum but I can only find information converting .VMDK to .VHD and obviously being oblivious to what all these other files do I'm really stuck!
    Thanks!!

    DB:3.26:Vmware To Hyper-V Conversion. 9s

no, that isn't what I have said at all.
What you want to do, can be done with the addition of SCVMM (it has conversion built in and understands how to read a VMX VMDK to produce a Hyper-V VM).
With Hyper-V alone, you need additional tools. With ESX alone, you would also need additional tools (it is really no different).
However, it is still unclear what you are attempting to accomplish and what your requirements are. The only thing that we know is that you have a VMware created VM, it sits in the folder, it has a lock file (which means it is being managmend by a VMware
piece of software), and you desire to move that to Hyper-V.
If you want 'easy' - then you install the 120 day evaluation of SCVMM, you copy the VMDK(s) VMX file to the SCVMM Library, you refresh the Library, you deploy a VM on Hyper-V from this VMWare VM. SCVMM also gives you a large LIbrary of PowerShell
    cmdlets to accomplish it.
I am not claiming that one product is better than another (becuase in the end I don't think that any hypervisor is superior, only different). At the same time, different companies package their software in different ways. VMware attempts to sell
you everything. MSFT does not, MSFT forces you to discover each part and put them together as your own solution. Is either way better? I cannot say.

Installing EM is very simple. Since you are not familar with Vm templates nor ou have VM setup you can do the following:

    a) follow the guide : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/install.121/e22624/install_em_exist_db.htm#BGBHDBCH
    b) download the EM binaries : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/enterprise-manager/downloads/index.html
    c) Install a certified DB to house EM repository. This can be on same host as EM or different host.

Installing is very simple, also open an SR with oracle support so that they can help you and have a web conf in case required.

Pardon if this is a simple question, I'm new to this. Existing templates created by someone else in my team did not show IP's or DNS names in the VI client. I took one of those machines, converted it to a machine, powered it on, made some changes then re-ran sys prep on the machines and finally converted them back to templates. Now the templates show IP's and DNS names of what I called them when I had temporarily converted them to machines to make some changes.

Is there any potential impact to this? We use an answers file when deploying a virtual machine from the template so I know the incorrect test IP doesn't get passed through; it takes the IP I supply through the wizard.

What concerns me is if we were to convert the template to machine and power it on it would be holding the old IP last used when the template was a machine. This could cause a duplicate IP issue, correct?

How can I remove the IP and DNS info from the template?

Because the file structure is the same, there will be *.img file and *.cfg file in both cases. Previous employee imported those files as virtual machine and that is not working, since I can't access console of machines nor those machines have any OS on them (I am not sure if virtual machine can even work without OS, someone correct me if I am wrong).

DB:3.16:Virtual Machine Or Virtual Template k1

Well, I really doubt that your former employee simply imported them as virtual machines, as long as you're not still running OVM 2.2.x. I OVM 2.2.x you simply could tar up the image and the config file and import it back as a VM, but this won't work in OVM3. What version of OVM are you running?

    Hi BG,
If you already have a VM created from the same template and stored in the same library (and VM additions are installed on this VM)then you should be able to see this in the drop down when you select that template.
To verify these parameters on the VM you are trying to use, please execute the following powershell cmdlet from the SCVMM powershell command prompt from SCVMM Admin console:
    Get-VM GoldVmName
and verify the Creationsource, SCVMM library and VMadditions in the output.
Also exceute the following script from the VMST install folder in the program files with the following parameters (assuming you are running on an English OS:
GetVMListforTemplate.ps1' Template Name Library server NameTemplate
Please send the output to the VMST support alias :
vmoff@microsoft.com . You should be able to see the list of VMs that can be used with this template.

DB:3.15:"Use The Customization Wizard..." Check Box Disabled 8c

    Hello,

In VirtualCenter 2.0.1 (sorry Virtual Infrastructure Client now I guess), I have setup some users with the "Virtual Machine Administrator" role. According to this role, members of it have all rights to the "Virtual Machine/Provisioning" section (all check boxes are checked). However, when these users go to deploy a new VM from template, the "Use the Customization Wizard to temporarily adjust the specification before deployment" check box is disabled (when selecting the "Customize using an existing customization specification" radio button is used).

The only way I can make this check box enabled is to make the users members of the "Administrator" role (BAD!!!!).

Am I missing some role right here? Is there another check box I should be checking for in the "Virtual Machine Administrators" role to allow this right?

    Thanks

    Hi all

Please explain what is virtual template interafce adn when should be it used.how can we bind the interfaces under one virtual template?

DB:3.13:What Is Virtual-Template Interface And When It Should Be Use fm

    Hi,

A virtual template interface is used to provide the configuration for dynamically created Virtual-Access interfaces. It is created by users and can be saved in nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM).

Once the virtual template interface is created, it can be configured in the same way as a serial interface.

To create a virtual template interface that can be configured and applied dynamically in creating virtual access interfaces, use the interface virtual-template command in global configuration mode.

Virtual template interfaces can be created and applied by various applications such as Virtual Profiles, virtual private dialup networks (VPDN), PPP over ATM, PPP over Frame Relay, protocol translation, and Multichassis Multilink PPP (MMP).

Following are FR and ATM examples:

    interface Serial1/0.1 point-to-point

    bandwidth 128

    frame-relay interface-dlci 51 ppp Virtual-Template1

    class FRTS

DB:3.12:Scvmm 2012 - Creating A Template For Host On A Perimeter Network ck

We have a install of SC VMM 2012 which is managing a Windows Server 2012 host machine located in a DMZ/perimeternetwork. That server is NOT (and cannot be) part of the domain.
I have a virtual machine created on the host that I want to become a template. However, attempting to do so gives the error:
The virtual machine (name) cannot be used in this operation because it is on a perimeter network.
    I found this related thread:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/virtualmachingmgrhyperv/thread/de49c18e-5506-4a23-997a-ceb9c489bfa4/
However, the first two options presented there will not work. The machine cannot be joined to the domain, and there are no other physical hosts being managed. This is the ONLY host managed by SC VMM 2012.
The third option seems incredibly manual and time consuming for something that we may find ourselves doing on a semi-recurring basis (refreshing a template with current Windows Updates, etc).
I guess I don't understand - if the management server can copy things like ISO images out to the host server, then why can't it pull the pieces necessary for a template off of the host server? The library is ON the VMM server - it is not some other
    remote server.
I'm hoping there is a better option here that has come about since that 2011 thread.
    Thanks

DB:3.12:Scvmm 2012 - Creating A Template For Host On A Perimeter Network ck

We understand there is no logical connection between the host and the DMZ, just a physical one routed to a virtual network, but even that opens up potential problems. Maybe they trust me to manage/configure it right, but if someone else takes over
at some point in the future, they could change the configuration (after all, one little check-box is all it takes) and all of a sudden the host DOES have a logical connection. We've discussed that more than a few times (we have a internal hyper-v setup
on Windows Server 2008 R2 / VMM 2008 R2, but we decided not to use it for this purpose). This Server 2012 / VMM 2012 environment was purchased for the explicit purpose of managing the DMZ hyper-v server as aperimeterhost.

    Regarding copying the template files:
    1) If I successfully get a template into the library, will it successfully deploy? I am still a bit confused about the permission issue. Why would things copy from library out to the host successfully (such as mounting an ISO), but not the opposite
way (creating template from a VM)? It seems the same permission issues would exist in both cases, and yet I cansuccessfullymount an ISO.
    2) The only other way to create it (with the current licenses we have available), would be to create the template on a VMM 2008 R2 system. Will copying the template files from that library over to the VMM 2012 library work?

Once I created the VMM Template, and created a new Virtual Machine from the template, the prepped SQL instance seems to have been removed.
Does anyone have any idea whether a Preped SQL instance can be used along side the VMM template process (sysprep), or will I need to script the install of SQL seperatly and perform this upon creation of a new Virtual from the template.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi All,

Well its a basic straight question I have, hope i get some answers from this forum

I have around 20 VMs to be built where all are SuSE 10 of the same configuration.

Can i create one Virtual machine, create a template out of this VM, and start creating the other 19 VMs using the newly created template.

    Is it like that?

Or can anybody give a clear "step by step procedure in virtual center" to create VMs using template. Since i will be assigning static IPs to all the VMs, how can I go about this issue.

The Help section in VC also tell that we need to clone the template to create a new VM-what exactly does this mean?

What is the difference between Clone Template?

    Thanks,

    Deepak.A

    DB:3.12:Deploy/Build Vm Using Template 1d

with clone you can create 1 virtual machine from 1 virtual machine.

With template you can create severals virtual machine from 1 template.

With customization specifications you can "sysprep" (please translate this word in unix world) a linux machine too... At least with Red Hat one.... (I've tested only this distro)

You can import existing templates by going to

See the documentation on importing. This should help you use your existing VMs if you want.

You can also create brand new templates by clicking New Template.

But the problem are on phisical switch, where the "management network" interface (my vmnic0) result connected with two mac addresses: the mac address of the vmnic0 and the mac address of virtual machine i connected before.

I tried to makea reboot of esxi but when the link on vmnic0 goes up, i see on phisical switch two mac address.

Ho can i release the mac address of virtual machine from my vmnic0 ?

    Hello,

i solved the problem. I try to explain better.

I have a vswich0 connected to interface vmnic0,used only for the ESXi management. The vmnic0 is connected to a phisical swich where configured the port-security, so if the switch detected more than 1 mac addres on this port, it shut down the port (the port is putted in status error-disabled).

Than i create a new virtual machine (no DHCP, fixed IP), but i connected it to the vswich0. On the vmnic0 ESXi put two mac addres, one of ESXi management, and one of new virtual machine. When i moved the connection of virtual machine, from vswitch0 to vswich1, on vmnic0 stil remain two mac address.

But this is a cache problem on phisical switch, when i moved the virtual machine from a vswich0 to vswitch1, the mac address is moved from vmnic0 to vmnic1....

    Thanks for the answare.

1)Can we perform operations like power on , power off , etc on template?

No. This is a purpose of having templates, so no one will accidentally turn it on and change something. But you can always convert template to VM in a second and turn it on if you need.

I suppose you should check API documentation for anwers 2 and 3.

    Hello

I've created a virtual machine with Windows 2008 Server as Os on it. I'm using its VHD to act as template (by creating copies) for my new Windows 2008 virtual machines. I'm doing it using ESXi 5.0 Vim API in my application.

The problem I'm facing is that if I select LSA Logic Parallel as SCSI Controller type while creating the template virtual machine, then all virtual machines created using the template Virtual Machine VHD necessarily have to use LSA Logic Parallel as SCSI Controller type, otherwise the virtual machine created will give a blue screen at boot time and reboot. Same is the case if template VHD has LSA SAS type SCSI controller and the Virtual machine created on LSA Logic Parallel, the newly created VM will not boot.

Since I'm doing it all programmatically and not using VSphere client, so the solution I can think of is to somehow detect the type of SCSI controller added on template VHD (that I'm copying to create virtual machines) and use same type of SCSI Constroller while creating new virtual machine.

Is there any method in Vim API to check the scsi controller type on a VHD file. Please note that I may not have the template virtual machine, instead only its hard disk.

    DB:3.08:What Is A Template In Scvmm 2008 R2 ff

As laiys mentioned a template ties the other components into one unit to build a VM. Additionally templates are what can be delegated for creation to self service users. So if you want self service users to be able to create a VM, then they will need templates exposed to them. The Guest OS Profile, Hardware Template, and VHDs are VM components that are used on the backend to speed up administrative tasks.

How to create a new virtual disk via SCVMM and store it into the Library? Maybe I'm too blind to see this. I cannot find a Create new virtual disk in SCVMM anymore. Any suggestions?

    2. Creating a virtual machine based on a template
I have successfully created a hardware profile and a guest operating system profile in the library. Based on this two profiles I have successfully created a template. In that template I defined the Blank Disk - Small.vhd to be used as the IDE device at the primary channel.
When I now right click the Template and choose New virtual machine the creation starts, a storage mini port driver is being installed on the host and then the creation fails at step 1.5 Install VM components and in the summary I see
    Error (13206)

    DB:3.05:Hyper-Threading On Gsx 78

Can anyone explain to me how hyper-threading is used in GSX server? My server has 2 3.2 GHz hyper-threaded physical CPUs. I am running 4 virtual servers on my physical server.

In the host Windows 2003, I can see 4 CPUs in Windows' task manager. So at this point, everything looks normal.

In each virtual Windows 2003, I see only 1 CPU in Windows' task manager. Should I see 2 CPUs in each virtual server? I would like to under how load is shared between hyper-threaded CPUs in virtual machine.

Bottom line, my problem is that 1 process in a virtual machine takes a lot of 1 CPU power and with only 1 virtual CPU in my virtual machine; the other tasks in the same virtual machine seem to be neglected.

    DB:3.05:Hyper-Threading On Gsx 78

I think hyper-threading is a major feature for Intel processor.

Is there any plan to enhanced vmware GSX to include support for hyper-threads for virtual servers?

    are hyper-threads supported on ESX?

DB:3.04:Issues Cloning Virtual Machines Via Scvmm 20008 Powershell Commands zp

We have an application that uses the scvmm 2008 cmdlets to clone a virtual machine to provide many virtual machines for users.  The virtual machine being cloned is used as a template for the new virtual machines.

When the virtual machine being cloned has a virtual hard disk, the clone process has steps  in it (marked as 1.5)  to install VM components.  These steps never complete for several reasons as stated below.
    1.       The machine being cloned is set to PXE boot, and hence the steps cannot complete because they try to start the virtaul machine and the boot fails because the boot server is not configured yet (since it needs the MAC address of the machine that is not yet cloned).  This results is a command prompt being displayed in the virtual machine requesting that the user press a key and since there is no user connected to the virtual machine it never completes.
    2.       If the machine does bypass the PXE boot and boot into windows it still gets stuck at this point because the virtual hard disk image of the machine being cloned is a member of a domain and hence needs credentials to log in (there may also be numerous other conditions underwhich this will fail).

We can’t use SCVMM templates to provide this functionality since they try to sysprep the drives etc. And we are using PXE boot mechanism to provide the OS so this is not required and not possible to do.

We can’t create new VM’s and copy the information from the originating VM because it does not appear to be possible to set the boot order of a VM using the powershell cmdlets.

The only solution I have at the moment it to only support cloning of VM’s that do not have a virtual hard disk attached, which will stop them being used with the PXE boot process in some conditions.  This also relies on an administrator setting up the VM that is to be cloned in an exact prescribed way (this is error prone and will lead to many failures).

Are there any suggestions on how we can overcome these issues.

DB:3.04:Issues Cloning Virtual Machines Via Scvmm 20008 Powershell Commands zp

The user was mistaken with is assumption about how our Templates work and how to integrate them VMM with his provisioning system which is PXE based. Essentially he only needed to add a blank VHD to a template set for 'No Customization'.

Boot order can be set through Powershell by using Set-VM -BootOrder

VMM can manage a MAC range which can be assigned to virtual NICs. New-PhysicalAddress gets the next available MAC.

it is not clear what setup you are talking about.

Are there different businesses accessing the same VirtualCenter environment?

Then you can definitely achieve what you want by setting up proper

DB:3.03:Adding A New Virtual Machine From The Strored Library To An Existing Lab Environment In Mtm 2010 pa

    Hello,

Could someone kindly point me in the right direction please. This is the background to my query.
We have some lab environments in Microsoft Test Manager 2010 which implement a number of virtual machines, all of which are managed in Hyper-V.
Each lab environment has a corresponding template which contains all the pre-requisite virtual machines and each template is stored in the MTM2010 Library which is hosted on the Hyper-V server.

In a nutshell, let me therefore describe our scenario as follows:
    1) We have a Lab environment (let's call it TestLab-A) which comprises ten virtual machines
    2) The entire TestLab-A environment is hosted on a server that we'll call ServerA
    3) TestLab-A has a corresponding template which can be deployed to create a new environment whenever required, such as when we need to create a brand new Lab environment, e.g. TestLab-B. This template is stored in the MTM2010 Library
which is also hosted on ServerA.
    4) Now, as a result of some external event of which I'm not going to go into detail as it's hardly of any relevance here, one of the ten virtual machines in TestLab-A has disappeared. However, as this virtual machine has a template associated
with it as descripted in #3, I am looking into the possibility of deploying from the template library that single virtual machine to the lab environment TestLab-A.
Just to reiterate, I am not looking to re-deploy the entire Lab template to re-create the TestLab-A. I only want to restore the single virtual machine that I have lost from my lab environment.

My question therefore is, can this be done and if so, could someione kindly provide some guidance.

DB:3.03:Discovery: Virtual Servers Vs Virtual Machine Instance 9s

    Hello All,

We have recently rolled out Discovery to our production environment. We are starting with our main data centers and mostly targeting infrastructure items such as servers.

We are comparing the results from Discovery to our homegrown CMDB.

One thing we have noticed relates to "virtual" servers and vCenter.

In our homegrown system, the team has entries listed as virtual servers but when Discovery collects the data on these entries - they are listed only as a Virtual Machine Instance and have no record in the virtual server class.

I have reviewed the WIKI and it seems like it may have to do with how these servers are created within vCenter...possibly because a template is used to "build" this entries.

Can someone provide a specific distinction between a virtual server and virtual machine instance and how Discovery makes that distinction?

    Thanks.

DB:3.03:Discovery: Virtual Servers Vs Virtual Machine Instance 9s

Thanks Amit and Doug. That helps clear it up in my mind. It will help me explain it to our Configuration Management team that is trying to confirm that what is coming from Discovery matches up to what is listed in our homegrown CMDB. Granted, there will be differences but this will help me point them to the right classes for that comparison!

Actually, this was a bug fix from 2.0. A UUID is intended to be a Unique ID and is only assigned when a VM is instantiated. As such, this was viewed as a bug (no real VM, no real UUID).

Here is my situation guys. I have worked with View 4.6 and5.0 before in the past.

I was told by a VMware technician, it is best practice tohave the VM being used as a template for a pool to be in a powered down stateall the time after you have associated that VM to a pool.

The only time you power this VM on is to make changes. Onceyou are finished with the changes do an ipconfig release then power the machinedown.

You should then edit your pool settings to point to the newchanges.

Another question that comes up is in View 5.1, can I work onthis template in the middle of the day while users are working on the VMs inthe pool associated with VM template machine without seeing a issue come up.

DB:3.02:Power State Of Virtual Machines Used As Templates For A View Pool View 5.1 xp

One thing that I've found is that if you have many applications that auto-update (including WSUS), it's handy to leave the template powered off so that when you are about to update the image, you know that nothing has changed since you took the last snapshot.

Probably not what the VMware Tech was referring to, but just my 2 cents.

I know this is a very old post and just wanted to add some information so that can help someone else facing the same issue

"The following virtual machines may be in use by another View environment." is a warning rather than blocking error, you should be able to ignore it and continue. If you can't, you can clear the existing View configuration information from the VM by editing the .vmx file and removing the machine.id configuration line. The registry data you see in the VM is being automatically populated based on that field.

DB:3.01:Create Windows Xp Virtual Machine Template From Existing Vm After Using Sysprep p9

If you select a deployed VM and convert to template SCVMM applies sysprep for you.
Otherwise you can manually sysprep a VHD and copy that VHD to the SCVMM Library. You then create a Temaplte including that VHD.
In the case of XP / 2003, to properly deploy a new VM, the local administrator password must be blank prior to sysprep.
    sysprep /shutdown /oobe /generalize (/reseal)
    /factory was for OEMs.

used disk2vhd to create the necessary VHDs for each of the physical machine and attaching them to the VM template for each machine in Hyper-V. Both machines came online under Hyper-V and I was able to install the Integration Services successfully. I
setup each of the network adapters on the virtual machines to be on the same subnet 192.168.1.0/24. However, I'm not able to have either machine respond to a ping/icmp request. The firewall isn't enabled on either machine and I can ping each machine
locally and get a reply. The routing table looks fine - yet nothing??
Why can't these 2 virtual machines see each other. It's like the network interfaces are dead?? ideas??

DB:3.01:Virtual Machines Unable To Communicate d7

After playing around a bit I was able to find the problem. What I didn't realize is that even though the Hyper-V virtual machines are running on a cluster the machines which are participating within a private network need to be on the same node. In
my case I had one VM on node1 and the other on node2. Because they were using a Private Virtual Network they couldn't see each other. When I moved the VM on node2 to node1 then both machines where able to communicate and see each other.

I would like a breakdown of how virtual machine works and how it can be used.

DB:3.00:How Does Virtual Machine Work 9x

You ask how it can be used. I am the course director for a series of IS Courses at a Canadian Forces School. When we teach our Courses on Windows Server, Exchange Server, SQL server or Unix we do not load these expensive pieces of software on the student's PC's, we simply load them on a Server with a bunch of RAM and have the student's VM into them. This saves money, ensures, all the students have the same software (good install) to work on and it give us the opportunity to insert faults on the machine only once to have them try and find the problem.

This is just scratching the surface, we do many other things with it as well, but this is a good example.

    Hope this helps.

    Many thanks in advance.

DB:3.00:Error: 1238 When Creating Vm Template From A Virtual Machine 31

Yep. In the SCVMM world there is a difference.
The assumption with a 'perimeter host' is that it has an interface in the DMZ or some untrusted network. Therefore it and the machines on it has an implied lower level or trust. So it imposes the block.
I have run into many of these little trust boundaries over the years, and there are moreappearing all the time - acrossdifferent products.
Now you added the host in a way that says that you trust it, and the VMs on it - you just can't implicitly trust it through AD.

Is there any design template which I can send to customer for prioritizing their virtual machines using SRM so that the application owner can enter the other Virtual Machines details which are dependent on the other VM.

I am looking for any sort of virtual machine design template which service engineer and the application owner can see and decide which are the VMS he should prioritize.

is it possible to let the RADIUS server decide which one of the 'interface virtual-template' configured on an router should be used? So that one can assign different virtual-templates to different users, when they dial in.

In my case I have to configure the LNS of a L2TP connection using a vpdn-group and want to bind different users to different bridge-groups/VLANs.

    Hi Arav,

thanks for your reply. What did you mean exactly with "Set your RADIUS to bind the incoming PPP request to your appropriate loopback and configure your loopbacks as you like"?

I've found the option to configure the virtual-access interface (created for each connection) by the radius server using the cisco-avpair "lcp:interface-config=". But I haven't yet tested it.

I have a Windows 2000 Server of which I cloned into a template. This went well, but now when I want to make a VM from the Template, it sits there trying then eventually fails, stating "Operation timed out".

HOWEVER, I have a Windows 2003 template, on the same data volume and ESX host - and this template can be used to create VM's fine.

In the end I converted the template to a VM, and that worked fine. Does anyone know why this is happening??

    Thanks,

DB:2.99:Virtual Center 2 "Operation Timed Out" When Cloning. m7

I had similar problems in the past when cloning from templates, especially when source and destination-volume were not identical.

    That problem occurres randomly...

I think it relates to the Cross-LUN-performance problem ( http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=49154 ). Maybe data-transfers are so slow sometimes, that VC gives up...

One thing you could try is setting Scsi.SCSI Timeout_ReabortTime (\[your Host] -- Configuration -- Advanced Settings -- SCSI) to something like 20000 (default is 5000).

I have the feeling that the problem occurs less often since I increased that value..., but I have no proof... (did not log all timeouts)

I've been exploring the use of Virtual Center in a product we are creating, and have noticed that Templates are associated with a given host. If that hose is put in maintenance mode, the template can no longer be used to create vms. On the other hand, if I have an unregistered vm/template plate on the san, I can register it on any host. Is there something I'm missing here, or is the Template design in VC really this poor at handling failures?

How do these ip addresses relate to the ones I assigned in the OS? Should they be the same, and therefore static? Or are they going to be used by the fence? Thanks.

    Hello
So i already know, that if you need a NIC to be assigned a Static IP from a Pool, you have to do this by a VM template, when you create a VM. But what if you want to assign a new NIC later (or if you forgot to assign it the first place), with Static IP?
As it is, Static IP is greyed out(Dynamic IP is chosen). So instead of starting over with a new VM, any possibilities?
Technet is saying: When you create a virtual machine template, you can customize IP
address settings. Static IP address settings are available only when you deploy a virtual machine from a virtual machine template.
So no other options? If you want to assign one later, or forgets, you might aswell start over?

    Hi,
We use ConfigMgr to deploy servers, both virtual and physical servers.
We also leverage the Hardware Profiles in SCVMM when provisioning new virtual servers.
We would also be able to do this from SCVMM SSP 2.0, however, it seems that new virtual machines must be deployed based on a template in SSP. Is it possible to create a template with no operatingsystem, which boots either from PXE or an ISO?
It seems like SCVMM SSP 2.0 can`t be used for our scenario, however, I want to ask here to make sure of this.

    DB:2.98:Templates 31

    Hi,
Yes, you are correct. New virtual machine must be deployed based on template.

Regarding your scenario to create VM from template without OS and boot from ISO is possible (not yet tried from PXE) and below are steps:
    (1) Createa template from small VHD. ( Go to VMM - Library-Select small VHD - right click - Create new Template - On Hardware configuration Tab remove
network Adaptor, Set memory appropriate as per ISO image requirement - Select BUS configuration then Virtual DVD drive - set capture mode to Existing Image file - Specify path of ISO image - Click on Create to Create template
    (2) Try to create VM from newly created template in VMM. This should work
    (3) Import new template in SSP 2.0 ( Steps : Go to Setting tab- Configure new template - Import template - Select library server and share - click on Add Selected
    - Save and Close)
    (4) To create VM from blank/small VHD, you need to modify extensibility script ( Go to Setting tab - Customize virtual machine action - Select Master action xml -
create copy of XML - Save and close - Select newly created action xml - View/edit action xml- click on edit button of CreateVM action - Here remove following code from all 3 New-VM commands

    -Owner
    $SubmittedBy -ComputerName $vmName -FullName $submittedBy
Click on Save close - Click on Save and close
    (5) Now attach newly created action xml to a role under which you need to create VM - now try creating VM - Post creation of VM click on
Connect link - you would see VM is booting from ISO image.

My question is that I want to be able to have a template in SCVMM so that I can use that to be able to provision VM in ESX using SCVMM. I have templates in my ESX and have tried importing it in SCVMM (administrative tab then right click then import template)
I have basically have the template in SCVMM, so the next thing to do is to try to provision using the template but I am having troubles with regards to the hard disk, I understand that Hyper-V has VHD while ESX has VMX and VMDK. How can I resolved this problem?
I tried using SCSI for HD because it says it does not support IDE and then I also used Fixed since it says it doesnt support Dynamic, after doing the settings and tried to provision. It says that I need a hard disk using IDE but I cannot do this since it doesnt
support it. Am I doing something wrong here?
The error I got if there is no HD is: Virtual Machine (name) on host (name) does not have any virtual hard disks. Virtual guest services cannot be installed on a virtual machine that does not have a virutal hard disk and operating system installed. (I know
this error because I dont have HD but how can I attach one since I cannot use IDE on ESX)

Also to add I got this error when I tried V2V or create a template or store the VM in my library: virtual machine manager cannot complete the virtualcenter action on the server (IP address) because of the following error cannot delte file [datastore2] (servername)
    (unknown error (0x194))

    Thanks

Vmware is only support SCSI Adapter, when you create a vm use vmdk to vmware host, you need to make the vmdk under the interface SCSI(you can choose the Channel).
At the same time, you need to check the vmhost status, you need to make sure that the hoststatus isOK.

    Hi

A Few monthis ago we did implement VMware in our environment with 2 hosts and an equallogic controller. Most of the machines were migrated across and we had 2 templates for window 2008 R2 setup by the consultant. I started using the templates to deoploy new VM's. I notice that I cannot deploy any VM's from this template as it complains with an error message as shown in the attached word doc. Upon looking closely, I could see from the vmx file of one of the Virtual machines deployed may be sharing this template, It looks like it has some reference to the template.vmdk file, I have copied the whole .VMX file in the word doc. The original template was set with windows 2008 on a 40 GB HDD. The Virtual machine which was deployed was changed to 120 GB HDD. Now seeing at the datastore the deployed VM has a 40GB vmdk file and the template originally used has 120GB. Everything is working fine but I want the deployed VM to be only pointing to the relevant .vmdk file and loose the connection with the template without disrupting my server. what is the best way to do this, I am fairly new to VM environment.

Also when I deployed the VM originally, I Right clicked the relevant template and selected the option "Deploy Virtual machine from this template" I presume that is the option to be used.

    This should resolve the issue.
    Method 1 :-
Enable the Display of File Extensions in Vista:
    1. Open a folder or open explorer
    2. Click the Layout button (to the left of the Views button) as shown in the picture below
    3. Click Folder Options
    4. Click the View tab
    5. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
    6. Click OK
    Method 2 :-
    1. Start PowerPoint, and then open or create a master slide to use as your default blank template.
    2. On the File menu, click Save As.
    3. In the Save as type box, click Design Template(*.pot). PowerPoint automatically selects the appropriate file location.
    4. In the File name box, type blank.pot, and then click Save

During my extensive explorations, I was able to share the virtual disks associated with the Templates and instead of cloning the templates to Virtual Machines, I was able to create Virtual Machine, using the virtual disks shared from the templates itself.
I was able to start the newly created (not cloned) Virtual Machines and access the console using VNC.

As the space requirement for cloning the templates to Virtual Machines exceeds all possible storage options currently available at my home lab, please point out why I should clone the templates to Virtual Machines when I can straight away create new Virtual Machines simply by sharing the Virtual Disks. All I could figure out, such a cloning requirement is only to provide the option for creating more than one Virtual Machine without making changes to the template virtual disks.

Please clarify my findings and suggest me what could be the best scenario for a lab test from home.

    regards,

    raj

You can clone the template and then delete the original. ;) lol Indeed a wonderful suggestion! Well I have taken the pain of adding one more storage area for the cloned template and waiting for the VM cloning to finish

You can also enable compression on your storage environment. A simple compression method can save a lot of space. Just be careful not to use too much compression as reading the compress data will be slower. There is a lot of slack area in the templates because templates do not use sparse allocated disks because of the performance issue of constantly expanding the disks while writing data. Just a thought.

Your lab should be fine to use this method but in production you should have plenty of disks to support your estimated IOPS. Oracle VM wasn't created to be practically confined to "300" GB of storage to run a ERP system such as EBS 12.1.3.I have an argument about the Oracle tagline then :D, it only says "familiarize yourself with Oracle E-Business Suite" attracting the attention of masses who can hardly make possible of such high level of storage environments. Btw, my enter setup is virtualized, VM Server and VM Manager is running from VirtualBox itself.

Thanks buddy, let me assess the performance of my last three weeks efforts once after cloning and running the instances.

    Dear all,

i imported a virtual machine as templete from virtual box.

now i already cloned machines from it. but now i want to modify template and i will reset cloning.

but i started the template. and clicked on console. but there is no display on console. although it is showing ready state.

    what can be the problem.

    thank you in advance

    Hi,

I created an virtual machine from the database server template (OVM_EL5U2_X86_64_HCM91_PVM downloaded from edelivery) and encountered the following problems :

    1. On the first boot of the machine I configured the database to be started on boot (default choice - +Do you want Oracle Database to be started on boot (y/n) [y]:+ ), unfortunately it looks like the database and listener do not start automatically on the virtual machine start.

    2. The /etc/oratab does not contain the database name I gave during the first VM setting.

    3. The database password given on the first VM boot are not taken in account, e.g. SYSTEM's password is manager, not the one I gave during the initialization ( Specify a password to be used for database accounts. Note that the same password will be used for SYS, SYSTEM and ADMIN for APEX )...

Is it a known problem, or did I make something wrong ?

    Nicolas.

    DB:2.95:Peoplesoft Vm Template cs

An other point, the service_name of the database contains the domain name coming from Peoplesoft world, +.corp.peoplesoft.com+
Is it standard from the templates delivered by Oracle ?

    Nicolas.

DB:2.95:Vm Deployment Errors And Warnings jm

I am deploying a Virtual Machine using SCVMM 2008 R2 RC.  The deployment hangs at 94% and eventually fails with following errorError (609) Virtual Machine Manager cannot detect a heartbeat from the specified virtual machine. Either the virtual machine is not running or Virtual Machine Additions is not installed. If I switch to Virtual Machine when the progress bar at SCVMM shows 94%, I can login and complete the sysprep questionnaire process and run the virtual machine without any problems; and at SCVMM the progress bar shows 100% but with following warningWarning (13222) An internal error occurred while Virtual Guest Services were being installed on virtual machine VM_NAME residing on host HYPER_HOST.Plz guide to rectify this problem.  thanks in advance.
Note:  Virtual Machine Template was created using a VHD Drive taken from Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 RC based Hyper-V Server; essentially meaning the VHD has WS2008 R2 RC Hyper-V Virtual Guest Services (older) and now I am delpoying this Virtual Machine on the WS2008 R2 RTM Hyper-V Server.  Could this be the issue of it hanging at 94%?

DB:2.95:Vm Deployment Errors And Warnings jm

mm.. Mostly VM hanging in 94% due to Sysprep problems ( At least it happened to me many times ). The error you get maybe as you mentioned that the IC failed to update. Did you tried this on Windows 2008 R2 RTM ?

DB:2.95:Don't See The Template Options. 8m

    Hi,

I am in the Virtual Client - I power down a VM. I want to convert this machine to a template. Problem is the only commands I can see are "Power on" and "Edit Settings".

If however I enter "Maintaince mode" exit the VI client and then come back in I can make a template - the extra commands appear.

"Deploy Virtual Machine from this template".

    "Clone to new virtual machine"

    "Convert to template"

    "Convert to virtual machine".

So is this how it is meant to work - i would of thought shutting down the virtual machine is sufficent. Something I am missing here?

    Thanks,

    Ward

DB:2.95:Don't See The Template Options. 8m

Since creating a template is essentially a clone it doesn't make a lot of sense to clone the running VM, though it could be done via snapshots I guess. Usually you would want at non-changing, known image to create the template from and a running machine probably isn't the best source for it.

And yes, I was wondering if you were connected to the VirtualCenter server with the VI Client since you wouldn't expect to see those options while connected to the ESX server.

In my Virtual Host Template, Im seeing a directory named test which looks to contain test scripts for various items. Is this directory needed? Can it be deleted without repercussions?

DB:2.95:Test Directory In The Virtual Host Template? sa

This is a set of simple hello world scripts in different languages.
They help quickly evaluate whether some scripting works or not
I think you can remove it safely

DB:2.95:Deploy Vm From Template Using Clonevm_Task as

I am trying to create a script that will deploy a VM from a template using the CloneVM_Task customization. Eventually I want to be able to deploy dozens of VMs from one template very quickly but first I am trying this out on one VM. I just can't seem to get it working. I used a script from http://communities.vmware.com/message/1064716#1064716 and http://communities.vmware.com/message/1000953#1000953

After I run the script in PowerCLI I view the progress in vSphere Client. The VM is created and the Clone Virtual Machine task gets to 93% at which time the task viewer says it is "Customizing the new Virtual Machine." That's about when the vCenter server crashes and when it comes back up again I can see in the task viewer that the Clone Virtual Machine task failed with an "Error."

I attached the script I am using below, any ideas?

DB:2.95:Network Problems Moving Virtual Machine From Workstation To Player. zs

Using Workstation 5.5.1 build 19175 under linux, I built a Windows 98 virtual machine with bridged networking and the network works fine when the virtual machine is used with Workstation. Then, I go to try the virtual machine out using Player 1.0.1 build 19317 and the network doesn't work.

How can the network be made to work in Player?

DB:2.95:Network Problems Moving Virtual Machine From Workstation To Player. zs

NICs and (host) drivers need to support promiscuous mode (what a name...) on the network card to be able to do bridging.

Some older drivers cards do not, maybe that was your problem.
