I have a new Acer laptop computer that came loaded with Windows 7 already. when ever I try to wake it from sleep mode the system runs very slow and then freezes. I have to reboot the computer to get it to work correctly. Also outlook and Explorer
freeze up quite a bit. I have tried running the repair option foroutlookbut I still have problems. I not sure where to start.

DB:3.42:Windows 7 Freezes When Waking Up From Sleep Mode. cd

This is an issue that in the past has been resolved by turning off Windows automatic update (or maybe have it scheduled for middle of night assuming it will stop regular random updates during the day and at wakeup?). When you restart windows after a long
sleep, svchost gets large and uses lots of resources as Windows (or other resident programs working through Windows) appear to perform startup maintenance. If Windows Update is on automatic, upon wakeup, svchost becomes enormous, slows the machine to a crawl,
and sometimes crashes it especially if you try to use a browser like Chrome. Chrome should be closed and reopened regularly to reduce its memory usage as it seems to keep a surfing history which eats memory. Your recent tabs are saved and reloadable if done
without re closing Chrome. Of course, you must now (daily if used daily) manually at your leisurecheck Windows update which works great and in under 10 minutes if not done upon wakeup.

Installed Windows 7, but now experiencing freeze up of the system. Does not matter what program is running. Freezes up with just the desk top showing.

    DB:3.33:Windows 7 Freezes Up 64 Bit z9

    Hi Author 222,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers community.

a.Since when are you facing this issue?
b.Did you make any changes to your computer recently?

Performa check disk on your computer and check if this helps.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. A Command Prompt window opens.

    2. Type chkdsk /f /r, and then press ENTER.
You are prompted to schedule Chkdsk to run when the computer restarts.
    3. Press Y, and then press ENTER.
    4. Restart your computer. During startup, Windows will scan your disk for errors, and Windows will try to recover any files that are located on damaged areas on the disk.

    For more information
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884070 (This article can also be used for windows 7)

Check if the problem persists in safe mode (Step 1). If the issue does not persist in safe mode then perform clean boot (Step 2) on your computer.

    Step 1:

Steps to boot the computer in safe mode:

    1. Restart the computer
    2. Start tapping F8 key
    3. You will get advanced boot option window
    4. Select the option “Safe mode”

    Link:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Step 2:

Starting your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. This kind of startup is known as a "Clean boot."

To perform a clean boot on a computer, follow these steps.

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    5. Click OK.
    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

Please monitor the system in the Clean Boot environment. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one
    to find out the culprit.

If your issue is resolved, follow the How to Determine What is Causing the Problem section in the KB article to narrow down the exact source.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 . Also, see the section on how to return your computer to a Normal startup mode.

    Hope this information is helpful.
Let me know if this worked.

    Thanks and Regards:

Ive had no freezes since uninstalling AVG9.0. Ive been running AVG 8.5 instead my problem appears to have gone - so I've got to assume that it was the cause of the system lock ups!

I have no idea why I guess the acid test now will be to upgrade to Version 9 see if the problem comes back (this assumes that AVG haven't resolved the problem with an update in the meantime).

John, do you think there is something in AVAST that has the same effect as AVG?

    Hi

we have a problem with a freezing computer. We use a 6534 high speed digital input card and we input data with 20MHz at 32 Bit. The application is running 24/7.

The problem is two or three times a day the computer freezes, we don't know why. The same application is running on other computers without any problems. We expect a jitter on the clock and made tests with a higher clock rate. The maximum what the 6534 can work with is 20MHz. We made a test and at a clock rate of 33MHz the computer freezes.

Can a jitter also freeze the computer?

Why does a NI card freeze the computer?

    Does anyone know a solution

    We use:

    - windows XP

    - NIDAQ 7.1

    - PXI-6534

    - CVI

    - Pentium Dual Core Computer with 2.5GHz

    Thanks

You said, "Nothing is working anymore". Do you mean you cannot even operate at a lower frequency?

In first post, you mentioned about a working system with the same configuration.

Did you try switching their cards to see if you can move the problem to the other PC along with the card or not?

Maybe it is your mainboard not being able to handle the speed anymore? Just a guess...

We recently purchased new workstations with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. One of the computers (and only 1 out of 5) freezes periodically when Outlook 2007 is open. The freeze results in the computer not responding to anything (control-alt-delete). The
only alternative is a hard restart.

I thought it was an AutoCAD issue, then an office issue and now the only common denominator with the freezes is that Outlook is open. I have checked the forums and tried many of the solutions already posted. I have scanned the .pst file. I have made sure
there are no additional add-ins running and only the default ones.

It freezes numerous times a day.

    Any thoughts?

DB:3.28:Outlook Freezes In Windows 7 jz

    Hi,

As I understand, the system freezes when Outlook application is open.

Follow the steps mentioned and check if it helps:
Step 1: Open Outlook in safe mode and check:
    · Close Outlook.
    · Press the
windows key+R on the keyboard to open the Run window.

    · In Run window and type
    outlook /safe
Note: There is a space between 'outlook' and '/'.

If Outlook works fine in safe mode then disable all the add-ins from Outlook and check. If Outlook works fine by disabling all the add-ins the issue might have caused due to add-ins. Enable each add-ins one by one
and check if Outlook works fine. If Outlook crashes after enabling a particular add-in then particular add-in might be causing the issue. Follow the steps given to disable the add-ins:
    · Open Outlook, click on
    Tools Trust Center Add-ins.
    · Under
    Manage select COM Add-ins.
    · Click on
GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.

Step 2: Boot the system in safe mode with networking, open Outlook and check if the issue persists:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

If Outlook works fine in safe mode with networking, the antivirus software or any third party software installed on the computer might be causing the issue. Perform advanced boot option to check which program is causing
    the issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Once you have found the problem product you may contact the appropriate technical support team for further help on the issue.

I hope the above suggestions help. Let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Hi clg1976,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

I would suggest you to put the computer in clean boot state and then check if any non-Microsoft service is interfering –

To perform the clean boot follow the step 1 mentioned in the below article and then check in this clean boot state -

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If the issue gets resolved check which non-Microsoft service is causing the problem; referring to the article and following other steps. You may have to disable the program or service causing the issue.
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

I would also recommend checking Microsoft Office specific resources. Please visit the link below to find a community that will offer the support you request in the right direction for office applications-

Hard to say. If your vista is 32 bit and you're upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit, you are going to have a problem because 32 and 64 uses a different set of drivers to function. Anytime your system is running 32 bit, 64 bit is not recommended as an upgrade. A fresh install is needed.

    Hi,

Shutdown the PC. Tap away at f10 as you start to enter the Bios Menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on the Hard Drive and Memory. Run both tests and post back with any error meesages.

If both the above tests pass, try the following.

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Part of this process will require a restart to check the drive.

    Hi Richiebug,

    1. Do you have updated display drivers installed on the computer?
    2. What is the make and model of the computer?

    Method 1:
I would suggest you to disable and then enable the game spider solitaire on expanding games – internet games feature from the Windows on or off features option and check if this resolves the issue. You
will have to disable the feature then click ok. Now open the game check. Again you may enable the game (internet spades) and check if you face the same issue.

    Allow
    b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
A message will appear stating that 'The system scan will begin'. Be patient because the scan may take some time.
    c. If any files require a replace SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Win7 DVD for this process to continue.
    d. If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".
    e. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.

DB:3.26:Have Startup-Error On My Lenovo Running Windows 7 ac

Can you boot into Safe Mode? To get into Safe Mode when you first power up, hit F8 about once a second until you get the menu and select Safe Mode. If that works, you can do a clean boot to see if there's a startup program causing the problem.

If you can't boot to Safe Mode, try booting froman install disc or repair disc and doing a repair. If you don't have either, you can make a repair disc on another Windows 7 computer by clicking Start - Control Panel - Backup and restore - Create system
repair disc. Insert a CD-R and it'll makeit.

    Good luck.

If you are using Win7 Please try this:Open Windows Event Viewer. Go to Custom Views - Administrative Events. Look for the recent error messages. Click on any errors and post the details here if they happen at the time things fail.Otherwise do this:Using your Windows Control Panel:Adminstrator Tools - Event ViewerClick on System and later Applications, do you see any errors logged during the times this happens, if so what errors ("If you click on the errors you can get more details and copy/paste them here")?Also, please check times after you reboot to see if any errors are produced when you system is restarting. Are you current with ALL Windows Updates and any Updates from your manufacturers web site for your system and any attached devices?

I'm wondering how I can fix this preferably without losing my hardrive data. Please help asap

DB:3.23:Dv7. Windows 7 Hp Screen Freeze Help jf

This issue can be caused by a number of reasons like:1. Due to a recently installed hardware or software.2. Due to a recent driver update.3. Software conflict between third party applications installed on the system.4. Virus infection. The first thing you should do is try to get to the “Windows Advanced Boot Menu”.a. Disconnect any recently installed hardware devices.b. As soon as you start your system, start tapping the “F8” key on the keyboard till you get to a screen that says “Windows Advanced Boot Menu”.c. Once you’re there, you should see different options listed like Repair your computer, Safe mode, Safe mode with Networking, Safe mode with Command prompt etc.d. Select the “Repair your Computer” option to get to the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE)e. In there, there would be a number of options like Startup repair, System restore etc.f. Select System Restore and restore your system to a date that you were able to login to your system.g. If that fixes the issue, it was probably recently a installed software application which would be gone now due to system restore. But be careful before installing it again.h. If you’re still not able to get to your desktop, then reboot the system again and reboot in safe mode.i. If you’re able to login to safe mode, try doing a clean boot.j. If the issue still persists, but you’re able to login to safe mode, we’d recommend that you take a backup of your data and do a Factory restore or Clean install. If the issue still persists, and you’re not even able to log into safe mode, then your only option to salvage your data would be to do a parallel installation of Windows 7.

I would suggest you to try the steps provided below and check if it helps.
    Method 1:
Try to set your computer in
Clean Boot state and check if the same issue occurs.
By setting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting step, follow

    run as administrator.
    b) In command prompt, type
chkdsk volume: /f /r and hit enter to check and repair any volume disk errors or bad sectors present on the drive which would be causing this problem.

Refer to “Check a drive for errors”http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

Also you may access Event viewer on your computer and check in the windows logs for significant error messages/codes related to the issue and post back the errors in event viewer.

    Hi,
Thanks for your help Azam. After posting the question, I had even more trouble getting the notebook to boot at all. Finally, I just let the thing continually try to reboot until one finally took. Then in the Control Panel/Programs and Features/View Installed
Updates I was able to find and uninstall the Service Pack 1. It helped, but I still had some trouble booting so I went into BIOS and found a Reset Defaults. Then I went through all the screens I could find in Windows 7 and hit any Reset Defaults I could
find. Then for good measure I did the same with the Internet Explorer since it caused some strange problems in the past that were only resolved by resetting the defaults. I've been booting fine now for 10 days without the Service Pack 1. I would have written
earlier, but I didn't want to jinx anything. I'm sure that the Service Pack has some important update programming, but I don't dare try to install it again as it is. Hopefully the right programmers see this and fix the bug. If they need any other info about
my computer please feel free to email me. Thanks again for your help

    Original Title

    original title: Computer freezes

DB:3.22:Computer Freezes When Running Windows Optimizer To Uninstall Unused Files. mc

your computer might be freezing since the optimizer is accessing and changing your registry hives. and to do this it has to access all keys. If a process is not letting the program access it, it may have to temporarily force free those key(s) from memory
    to apply changes.

It can be bad to use programs to edit the registry because these programs can sometimes produce unpredictable results due to programming bugs. I would never risk my computer to a program.

The registry stores 95% that's nearly ALL of your computer's configuration info. The registry also contains 98% of your computer's pointers. These pointers launch specific programs when they are read, This includes the windows operating system.

The registry contains your start menu items, your computer's updates, whether or not your windows is genuine, and many more important items like these. Many programs will fail to start without a working registry database.

I hope this gives you an understanding of why you shouldnt risk things like this.

    DB:3.22:Desktop Freezes After Startup 3f

    Hello,
It does sound suspiciously like a virus or malware. I'd download and run these two scanners, quarantining and deleting any infections they find:
    MalwareBytes (FREE)SuperAntiSpyware (FREE)

Your post also stated that you can't "have Norton run a test" when you're in safe mode. Did you mean an antivirus scan? If so, you should be able to do just that and have it go "deeper" in safe mode than in normal mode.

If that is what you meant, I'd encourage you to run an antivirus scan while you're in safe mode and quarantine and delete any infections found. If you need an antivirus application, I use and recommend Avast, downloadable from here:
    http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html.

Run these three applications and post your results here. If need be, we can explore more when you've gotten these done. Let me know how you fare.

New computer with Windows 7; system freezes and has to be rebooted, randomly, after being idle; ideas to fix?

DB:3.18:Windows 7 Freezes And Has To Be Rebooted 9x

    Hi,

Since its a new computer be sure to check with the System Maker's Support, their on-line

documentation and drivers, and ask in their forums (if any) for known issues.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.

What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on machine? Include any you have EVER
had on this machine including those you uninstalled (they leave remnants behind which cancause
    strange issues).

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Do these :
Try these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

    ===========================================

Consider this an absolute must - manually updating your drivers.

Vista and Windows 7 love updated drivers so here is how to update the major ones.

This ismy generic how to for proper driver updates :

This utility makes it easy to see which versions are loaded :

DriverView - Free -utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
description, version, product name, company that created the driver, and more.
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker's which are the most current.
Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Adapter - write down the make and complete model
of your video adapter - double click - Driver's tab - write down the version info. Now click UPdate
Driver (this may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) - then Right Click -
Uninstall - REBOOT this will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat that for Network - Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and any other major device drivers you have.

Now go to System Maker's site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples)(as rollback) and then Device
Maker's site (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipsetand software updates at System Maker's site while there.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them- Right Click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in Device Manager - Drivers tab to be sure the version you are installing actually
shows up. This is because some drivers rollback before the latest is installed (sound drivers
particularly do this) so install a driver - reboot - check to be sure it is installed and repeat as
    needed.

Repeat at Device Makers - BTW atDeviceMakers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER - check
    manually by model.

Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ht/driverdlmfgr.htm
Installing and updating drivers in Windows 7 (updating drivers manually using the methods above
is preferred to ensure the latest drivers from System maker and Device makers are found)
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/43216-installing-updating-drivers-7-a.html

If you update drivers manually then it is a good idea to disable Driver Installations in Windows
Updates, this leaves Windows Updates ON however it will not install drivers which will usually be
older and cause issues. If Updates suggests a new driver then HIDE it (Right Click on it) and then
go look for new ones manually if you wish.

The computer freezes entirely, i.e. cannot move mouse pointer and the sound freezes, which is most annoyingly. Watching resource manager I cannot so any abnormal activity of CPU/network/harddrive etc.

Up untill this morning my Firefox has worked fine. When I started it this morning as soon as Firefox opens my whole computer freezes and the only thing I can do is force a shutdown. I have changed nothing on my computer as I only use it for homework. I am running windows 7.

    DB:3.18:Windows 7 Freezing zd

    Hello,

Some add-ons or some windows update may have done something. Here's something simple that you may try:

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button

    , click Help

and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

DB:3.17:My Windows 764 Bit Dell Computer Freezes. zd

    Hello Sheila.quinn2,
    a) Do you get any error message, when the computer freezes?
    b) Does it happens only when you access internet or with any other application as well?
    c) Have you made any changes to your computer recently, such as new hardware or software installed, or updates applied?
    d) Since when are you facing this issue?
    e) Was it working fine before?
Please let us know the above details to provide you better assistance.
As a workaround, I would suggest you to perform clean boot and check if any third party application is causing the problem.
To find out which startup application is causing the issue. Please follow the steps below:
Clean Boot will help you start your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program or any of the third party service is interfering with your program.
Steps to perform a Clean Boot:
    1. Click Start on your Desktop
    2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    6. Click OK.
    7. When you are prompted, click Restart.
If the computer boots fine after clean boot, then there are some non Microsoft applications causing the problem. To find out which application causing the problem refer from step 2 to step 6 in the article this is mentioned in the clean boot article.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
Once you find out the application which is causing the issue, i would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the application.
To return your computer back to normal boot:
    1. Click Start on your Desktop
    2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    3. Click the General tab.
    4. Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
For information on using “Clean Boot”, see the following Microsoft Article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
I hope this information helps. Please get back to us if you have any more questions about this issue.

My computer is about a year old, it is an off the shelf HP running windows 7 64 bit. I have never opened the case.

In the past two days, while playing spider solitare, even when disconnected from the internet , the computer freezes momentarily.

A friend found a "fix"; I went into services and "Desktop window manager session manager" and disabled it. This gets rid of the problem, but also removes aero, making this not windows 7 but vista.

What can I do to repair the damage?

    DB:3.17:Momentary Freezes 8p

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community to post your question.

Based on the above description, it appears that your computer freezes while playing spider solitaire game and you have disabled "Desktop window manager session manager" that fixed the issue.

As you have disabled "Desktop window manager session manager" Aero stops working. Here are some troubleshooting stepsthat you can try to resolve this problem.

1 . What is the make and model of your computer?

    2. Which antivirus application are you using?

Enable Desktop window manager session manager and follow these methods.

Method 1: Let’s update the display adapter drivers.
Refer to the suggestions from the following link.
Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

If the issue still persists, you may visit the manufacturer website and download the display adapter drivers.

Method 2: Perform clean boot and check if the computer works fine.
Clean boot will help us identify if any third party applications or start up items are causing the issue.

To do this, follow steps from this link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
NOTE: After checking the functionality in clean boot, follow the suggestions under
“How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot”.

problem happened while checking for windows updates. At this point I thought my OS was corrupted and I formatted my drive and then re installed windows 7. Unfortunately the problem was still there.
