You do not need a 1 for 1 instances to network cards. There should be at least two though, one for the private network and one for the public. If traffic warrants it you could add more, but the servers would have to have identical specs and hardware.

We have a SQL cluster server running with SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition.
Currently the cluster has 2 nodes with Active/Active. Now I need to add a new node as a Passive node. So after I have done it, the cluster will be a Active/Active/Passive cluster.

Because the cluster is a production server, I need to know exactly how I add a new node onto the current cluster without breaking anything. Also this is my first time to install a passive node, so it is difficult for me to understand how to install and configure it.

I have already added the physical node onto the cluster group so I can see the new node ‘paused’ from the Cluster Administrator.  Now I need to install the SQL but I am too nervous to run the installation program.

    My questions are:

    1.       Do I need to run the SQL install program from one of other active nodes in order to install the SQL on to the new node? Or is it ok to run the SQL install program from CD?
    2.       Do I need to create a new virtual name, a new SQL named instance and a virtual IP address for the new passive node?

    Node3 (passive)                        SQL3???                       SQL3\SQL3?????????                           xxx.xxx.xxx.120????

    3.       Is there a risk to delete or change the current active nodes? If so, will you let me know as I will be super-careful not to do it.

    I highly appreciate your help!

DB:3.38:Add A New Passive Node To Set Up Active/Active/Passive Cluster 3c

Yes you can do it. And you can do it it without incurring any outage (however Iprefer to have a maintenace window).
Once you have added the server to the Windows cluster.. Log on to the box which OWNS the SQL resources and do whats known as ADD NODE to SQL clustered instance.
Once the node has been added to the sql cluster .. you need to patch the newly added node with service packs and and cumulative updatesso that the version of SQL binaries on the newly added node is same asthe level of sql on theother nodes
and for thatUse the /passive option to upgrade the binaries on the passive nodeswithout having incurring any outage.
    ADD NODE --

Whats /Passive switch? -- The switch is documented here

Kumar is correct, you'll need to open up cluster manager and connect to that cluster (if using remote management). Once connected, find the resource group you want to move that contains the instance of SQL Server you're looking for. Depending on your version

DB:3.30:Server 2008 Sql Cluster And Vsphere Ha 89

I'm in the processing of looking at building a virtual SQL cluster on our vSphere 5 system. The vSphere cluster is configured with DRS in partial automatic mode, and High Availablility is also turned on. Reading through http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-mscs-guide.pdf indicates that HA and DRS needs to be disabled for virtual cluster nodes. It looks like our options are either creating a cluster in a box that would run on a single host (so we would lose hardware redundancy) or set up a cross host cluster using RDM's on the SAN. However, a third option occured to us, and thought I'd throw it out here so see what people thought.

Create a cluster in a box setup, running on a host with virtual disks. Configure the cluster as esentially Active/Passive. Disabled DRS on both nodes. Disable HA on the *passive* node, but leave it configured for the *active* node. If the cluster is running on Host1, and Host1 goes down, then the active node would be subject to HA and be brought back up on Host2. Seems like this would give us the best of both worlds....the more simple cluster in a box configuration (i.e. no need for RDM's or a physical private heartbeat network) plus hardware redundancy vi vSphere HA.

    Thoughts?

DB:3.30:Server 2008 Sql Cluster And Vsphere Ha 89

You know what? I take it *ALL* back. I have re-read the documentation I originally posted, and have discovered that all the references to removing HA and DRS are not in there. And, just like you said, there is an entire section on setting up affinity rules for clustered virtual machines in a DRS/HA cluster. I'm having a bit of a Matrix moment here. I *think* I may have originally be looking at an older version of this document meant for earlier versions of vSphere. Man, I need to go get some more coffee I think. After a re-read of the document, it looks like a "cluster-in-the-box" SQL cluster using virtual disks will work, and be do-able with HA once the appropriate affinity rules are in place.

    Hi,
Additional, For Serial Attached SCSI or Fibre Channel: If you are using Serial Attached SCSI or Fibre Channel, in all clustered servers, all components of the storage stack
should be identical. It is required that the multipath I/O (MPIO) software and Device Specific Module (DSM) software components be identical.
It is recommended that the mass-storage device controllers—that is, the host bus adapter (HBA), HBA drivers, and HBA firmware—that are attached to cluster storage be identical. If you use dissimilar HBAs, you should verify with the storage vendor that

    Hi,
As moort, this is supported and we usually call such configuration as Active/Active failover clustering. However, you need to well configure each instance such as Min/Max Server Memory, and each node has enough resources t host two instances if one clustering
instance fails over to the other therefore there would be two instances running on the same node.

    Hi,
I have active passive SQL cluster nodes. In SCOM, I am able to see the logical drive (C and D) of both of servers.
But i don't know why it is not showing the Active resource drives(E,F,H, I).
I have enabled the agent proxy on both of servers.
    Servers are 2008 R2 with SQL 2008.

    Hi Mahesh
Is this still an issue? If so, please take a look in the operations manager event log to see if there are any errors relating to logical disk discovery.
In OpsMgr, search the logical disk state view based on the name of the active node and see if the disks are visible and listed as monitored.

DB:3.25:Installing Agent For Active Passive Clusters? sf

I have just installed 12c clound contol for a customer and now we are deploying agents. Part of the customers env includes some redhat clusters that are hosting multiple databases. In the redhat cluster environments they have configured their resources as such that each database has it's own virtual ip that will move along with the instance. This is presenting a problem for installing the agent for me. The clusters are 2 node clusters and I have pushed the agent to a virtual ip address on one of the hosts using a shared file system that can migrate to the other host and we have been able to failover the resources that make up that instance along with the agent binaries and the agent was able to startup on the other node.
Problem is that cusomter has other databases tied to other virtual ip's and have databases running on both nodes at the same time and I am not sure what would be the best way to use the agent in this scenario? I thought of installing the agent on each host of the cluster locally but not sure what happens when the databases target that I configure on one host fail over to the other hosts or vice versa?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Hi experts,
Sometimes I need to stop passive node, ex: hardware maintenance, testing not my fault.exe(full memory dump), change teaming node, rolling upgrade SQL server on passive node first. How should I do to stop passive node to impact production system(active
    node)?
    1. just do it on passive node becuase it is passive?
    2. pause passive node?
    3. remove passide node from possible owner of specific service(ex: SQL server/agent)?
    4. stop cluster service on passive node?

DB:3.24:How To Stop Passive Node? z9

    Hi.
I was talking about the cluster resource properties in general.
To be honest, I don't have much experience with SQL but IMHO the possible owner should function the same with every resource.
So I'm a bit confused by what is written in the KB article which you found. But when I read it right this procedure should fit to a more than two-node cluster because of the wordings like, few nodes, some nodes and half of the nodes.
Therfor I still believe that the possible owner on a two-node cluster (in general) is senseless, but anyway if a group only have one possible owner than it will not failover to a non-possible owner.
But from a praticale point of view it is easier to pause a node (two clicks) than to change the possible owner (minimum of four clicks) ;-)

On the server we just have one $ORACLE_HOME which lives on a zfs pool and gets mounted on the passive server during failover. My question actually is: whats the best way to deploy the new agents? Should we use a shared home directory for the agent and install install them on a virtual IP? This is not true.. HACMP is no more required with Oracle 10gR2 and with AIX 5.3 We have two AIX installations which are straight CRS installs. No HACMP.

The only reason HACMP was required in the previous installs was because of some library files that was only included in the HACMP disks. Now this is part of the AIX 5.3 install.

DB:3.19:When To Use Active -Active And Active -Passive In Cluster 81

    Hi Francis,
If you are planning to do clustering in weblogic 11g with SOA, I can suggest you to do active-active clustering for soa components and Active-passive clustering for Weblogic admin server. The reason behind it:

    * Application configured in SOA will be avaliable to end user on HA mode. If admin server goes down then there is no impact on application access.
    * You can manually swich over admin server to seond node and start it there without impacting soa managed server.

For implementation please see below link.

    I have a two server active/passive Windows 2008 R2 cluster with SQL 2008.

I created 6 drives in our SAN for SQL.

During the install, SQL created the SQL Resource Group which contains thew following:
    ----SQL Virtual Server Name
---Other resources like SQL Server SQL Server Agent.
--- Disk M:\ where all my systems and tempdb is located on.

I also have 4 other disks, 2 disks will be used for two different Databases and the other 2 will be for their logs.

My question, should all 6 disks be in the SQL resource group or should they be seperated, like SQLDATA1 SQLDATA2? What is the benefit or issue?
If I add all the disks to the SQL Resource group, should there be any additional dependencies? Right now the SQL Server has a dependency on the SQL Virtual Server Name and on the M:\ Drive.

SQL Server should depend on Network name, and disk resources

We have a 3 Node Cluster running SQL Server 2008 R2, Active, Active, Passive. Whenever our Patch team want to apply the latest patches, we have to manually go into Failover Cluster Manager and stop the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent Resources, so
that when the server reboots, these services do not failover to the passive node. My question is this. Was I told correctly, that when one of these servers reboots, that any instance of SQL will failover to the passive node, if SQL Server is not
shut down from the Cluster first. Another question. After the reboot, the SQL Server Resources are not coming online, we have to manually bring them online, even though the 'AutoStart' is selected in the Properties of the SQL Server Service.
    Thanks,

DB:3.19:Sql Server Failover On Server Reboot j7

    Hi retracemaent,

I know this post is quite old however I have a quick question on your suggestion. You mentioned about removing possible owner from the the services from the FCI's. Remove possible owners will not actually stop a failover if I'm not mistaken? In the event
a 2 node clusters active node experiences difficults(unexpected reboot etc) the instances(services) will fail over to the passive node however they will not come online.

I know this as good as you can expect from a cluster however I'm curious if there is a way of stopping any kind of failed over? Is eviction and temp reduction to a single node cluster while patchingthe only way? So the services are only returned once
we bring the node back up.

    Thanks!

    DB:3.19:Cluster Failover 1j

    Chirag,
Ah I didn't catch that (that's he's adding a node). It's possible to use virtual (dissimilar hardware) nodes, though in this case I would test the network latency and failover times then change health checks and resource failover properties appropriately.
The last thing you want to be in is a infinite fail over loop...

    DB:3.16:Active Passive Clustering 1k

Hi Santosh,We have active/passive clusters and active/active clusters. In active/passive clustering, the cluster includes active nodes and passive nodes. The passive nodes are only used if an active node fails. In active/active clusters, all nodes are active. In the event of a failover, the remaining active node takes on the additional processing operations, which causes a reduction in the overall performance of the cluster. Active/passive cluster configurations are generally recommended over active/active configurations because they often increase performance, availability, and scalability. Thanks,Parmod Bhardwaj

DB:3.15:Urgent - Analysis Service Install On An Existing Sql 2005 Cluster - Please Help 31

Hi,I am having an existing sql 2005 cluster on an active passive cluster. I need to add analysis service to this as a new component. I am having enough space available in the cluster disks. Following are my queries,1) do i need a new virtual ip and virtual server name for the analysis services ?2) do i need a seperate cluster resource group for analysis services with an additional disk added ?RegardsNimesh

DB:3.15:Urgent - Analysis Service Install On An Existing Sql 2005 Cluster - Please Help 31

    1. Yes, according to the setup blurb:
Be prepared to provide a virtual server instance name and IP address for the clustered Analysis Services installation that is unique and distinct from the names and IP addresses of the cluster itself and from the nodes in the cluster.
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143511.aspx

    2. It would be preferrable to do this, otherwise if you had e.g. SQL and AS in the same group then a problem with AS could cause a failover which would unnecessarily impact SQL (or vice-versa).

Ordinarily, you would just run setup via the Add/Remove Programs util for SQL Server 2005 in Control Panel to add or remove SQL Server components. However, as this is a cluster, things are not that simple and you will have to install via the command line as described in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922670/en-us

yesterday i installed sql2k5 on a active\passive cluster and for some strange reason the mssqlserver service does not want to start up on the node that i installed it on but if i fail it over to the passive node it will start fine. system info below:
    system info:
    * win2k3 enterprise r2 (x64) cluster active\passive*
    * sql2k5 enterprise (x64) clustered*
the win2k3 cluster works fine. i installed the msdtc service running as a cluster as well and that works fine.
both servers are identical to each other. sql virtual server is running on the passive node which is now the active node. any ideas?

    Hi,
Is it possible to convert physial cluster to virtual?
We have 2 node sql server 2008/windows 2008 cluster, Active/Passice (poduction). We are planning to virtualize it.

    1. Server team will add 2 virtual nodes to existing cluster.
    2. How to add these nodes to sql cluster? Do I need to do add node for each instance. Suppose we have 3 instances on active node. Passive node is already setup for this cluster. Server team will add virutal node to windows cluster. Then I will run setup
on passive node and will select add node for each instance. I mean I will run setup on virtual passive node for each instance and will select add node. Am I right?
    3. After failover we will remove active node.
    4. Once server team added second virtual node, I will do the same process to run setup for each instance and will select add node for each instance.
In simple worlds, how to convert 2 nodes cluster to virtual 2 nodes cluster.
Any help, steps will be appreciated.
    Thanks

OK, then make sure to test the disk access before you start setting up the SQL instance... At least in Hyper-V (Windows 2008R2) direct SAN cluster access is not supported for VMs, only iSCSI is. Windows Server 2012 will change that...

hi,I got JBOSS web portal running on 2 separate servers and would like to cluster them in a active and passive failover configuration. In other words, user would use a "virtual IP" (VIP) to access the JBOSS web portal. Initially the VIP could be hold by server #1. If server #1 fails, then server #2 would take up the VIP and all web traffic would be directed to server #2.Does JBOSS Cluster support this mode?Or have to use the expensive windows server clustering? Thanks.

    DB:3.13:Active/Passive Cluster kd

This is essentially a function of your load balancer. If the JBoss AS instances are clustered and the webapps are marked distributable, then your sessions will be replicated and will be available on either node. What makes it active/passive is the fact that your load balancer sends all the requests to server A unless it's not available. This can be configured easily if you are using mod_jk as your load balance; in workers.properties, you mark on worker as "disabled" and the other as not.

    worker.node1.disabled=true
    .....
    worker.node2.disabled=false

DB:3.12:Failover From Active Node To Passive Node Did Not Work. How Can This Be Remedied? 7a

CaptSky,What you are discribing is a disaster scenario (and therefor a testing scenario!). What should happen is that the looks alive check will fail and the is alive check should also fail causing a failover of the resource group (depending on how this is all setup). It can take anywhere from a few seconds to notice, to a minute or longer. When the resource group eventually finishes onlining and sql server starts up, it will do it's normal database start ups when the normal checks, etc, are done. This may take a while depending on version (standard/enterprise), size of databases, and transactions/etc running at time of fail.I'm not sure about ensuring that the resource group onlines as there could be different reasons for conflicts that cause the online to fail, but we do watch the servicesusing the virtual name to check when they are up/downand eventlogs for cluster events to notify us that failovers, etc, happen.Hope this helps,Sean

Your external storage has to support sharing the scsi bus/backplane between two machines. Then you have to configue your host to use and maintain SCSI reservations, failed reservation breaking, split brain issues, etc.

If it is a second instance, then yes - you can have such scenario. Just be careful with the settings as in your case node 2 should have at least double the memory (in case when both clustered instances happen to run on Node 2). And if Node 1 and Node 3
have quite utilized CPUs - then consider improving CPU power on Node 2.Ivan Donev MCITP SQL Server 2008 DBA, DB Developer, BI Developer

If the VC db goes down it only affects admins... and you can still revert managing VMs on a ESX host by ESX host basis...

If you must the sql db could be a cluster... two installations of VC - one powered off and one powered down. In event of a failure of either SQL db or the VC - you would have redundency...

I have a traditional mscs cluster with two Windows 2003 X4 servers attached to a fiber SAN. i was hoping to install Vmware server as a cluster resource (like you can MS virtual server) so that the guest can failover to the passive node there by providing failover support for the VM.

i now have on VM installed on one node but have the data on the SAN LUN to which each (active and passive) host has access. The hope is, if the active host fails, we can manually start the VM from the passive host because the vm file is accessible on the SAN. If any one has done this type of clustering, i would appreciate some insight. I have read and understand the cluster in a box setup.

wangdongfox, for the use case you describe you could deploy the MDB in the deploy-hasingleton directory. That's not a true active/passive because the bean is not deployed and passively waiting to receive messages. Instead it will be deployed and begin receiving messages if the master node fails or is shutdown. I would expect that for most MDB use cases that would be sufficient, since a messaging based app by definition doesn't assume the message receiver is always available.

    DB:3.09:Sql 2005 Std Cluster 7x

Well......not exactly, but close enough.  You can install a default instance in a cluster and it will take on the name of the SQL Server virtual that you specified during setup.  So, yes, all instances in a cluster are named, but just a little differently than on a standalone piece of hardware.

I'll let you answer your own question though.  From the perspective of SQL Server, the cluster is a SINGLE piece of hardware.  The Windows clustering service screens the physical machines from SQL Server, so that the entire cluster looks and acts like a single piece of hardware.  So, while SQL Server can issue a WMI call to know it is a cluster, which also tells the installation routine that additional information must be specified, the cluster is still looks like a single machine.

So, can you grab a standalone piece of hardware and install 2 default instances on a single machine?

it is irrelevant where the cluster group is running on, since this will failover if there are any problems. Your post loosely suggests you may be running a disk only quorum, and if this is the case you should seriously consider changing to node majority
plus shared disk configuration for improved availability of your cluster.Regards,

    1. Oracle EBS upgrade from 11.5.10.2 + 10.2.0.4 on Solaris to Linux 5 (12.1.3 + 11.2.0.2)
    2. Oracle EBS 12.1.3 Configuration on RHEL Cluster failover with VIP(Virtual IP) in place.

    Now the Question:
    1. Is Oracle R12.1.3 environment support Virtual IPs failover on RHEL Cluster (Active- Passive) environment?
    2. Is Concurrent tier support VIP or we have to configure Physical Node only.
    3. What is the easiest way to achive the above 2 requirement.

    DB:3.08:Question About Applying 2008 Sp1 On A Active Passive Cluster z3

In the past (SS 2005), I was able to apply patches to to the virtual cluster hostand it automatically detected both nodes and applied the patch. This incurred downtime due to a reboot, but i did not care since this was a new cluster build.
Now, in 2008, the information I am finding implies that you should apply on passive node, perform a failover and then apply on other node.
I am curious if it is still possible to apply the patch like i did for SS 2005, where Ijust run the install a single time from the virtual cluster host, thereby letting the installer figure out it is a cluster and apply to both nodes?

    DB:3.08:Question About Applying 2008 Sp1 On A Active Passive Cluster z3

AFAIK this is no longer possible. (And that's good for my money, the old form failed very often with me.) When you do a cluster setup in SQL2008 or R2 you don't even have a chance to specify a secondary node at setup time. You always create a one node cluster
first and then add additional nodes. You could of course write a script to query WMI and RPC the setup call to all nodes, but I would recommend against it.

DB:3.07:Virtual Networking For A Microsoft Cluster Server 7a

    Hello -

We were having a team discussion about Microsoft Clustering in a VI 3.5 environment a bit earlier and I was stumped on something. When creating a 2 node active\passive Microsoft cluster in VI 3.5, what is the best approach when setting up the virtual network, specifically with regards to the private cluster network? Is the best approach to create a dedicated vswitch for the private cluster heartbeat network, or would a port group on the same vswitch as the other ip's work just as well??

Thanks in advance fo the help -

    Steve

DB:3.07:Virtual Networking For A Microsoft Cluster Server 7a

Since the clustered nodes can be on different nodes, you need a real vlan for the heartbeat traffic to traverse over. For this, I have in the past piggyback'd on my management or public switch, and used a completely different subnet than what is running on that switch. You can configure a 2nd interface on that same portgroup as public, and give it a 2nd non-routed IP, or configure a portgroup that is on the same segment as your management subnet, and configure an IP address on that 2nd NIC.

For example, I have my public interface on 10.1.1.x, and on that same portgroup, 2nd NIC, I'll configure a 10.2.2.x IP address for heartbeat. It saves having to add an additional NIC just for heartbeat traffic, but I've used that as well. Depends on your requirements for network isolation.

I'm looking for a tool that allows me to manage two Cisco ISR routers (2911) as one device ("cluster" device or "virtual" device).

Both routers are connected directly to the internet and are using HSRP to perform a function of the virtual default gateway for LAN devices.

What about Cisco ASA in Active/Active or Active/Passive Failover mode?

    Thanks,

    Jernej

DB:3.06:Manage Cisco Isr Routers As One Device sx

No, this is not currently possible.  The devices need to be managed using their individual IP addresses (i.e. not the virtual IP of HSRP).  You'll generally want to do that for the time being since both devices will have their own CPU, memory, buffer, etc. characteristics.

    DB:3.05:Exchange 2007 (Active And Active Node) c8

Typically, there is no need for more than one passive node in the cluster for each active node in the cluster. As a result, a configuration of one active node and one passive node is preferred over configurations
with one active node and multiple passive nodes. When using a single node SCC, you can use either a shared storage quorum, or a Majority Node Set quorum. Although single-node SCCs are supported, they are not considered to be a high availability solution because
no redundancy exists within the cluster. For more info, see this
    document. Hope helps.Noya Lau

    Hi All,

We've a two node MS Exchange Active/passive cluster with Windows 2008 R2 64bit OS, the Clariion CX4-120 shows Host agent unreachable for these hosts.

I've checked agent.config file and entries are correct, restarted Navisphere Agent service on both nodes still the error. Is there something that I'm missing?

The server has two NIC's with heartbeat NIC set on top, but this is a requirement for the cluster to work.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    regards,

    DB:3.05:Host Agent Unreachable mm

Ken is correct - when the top NIC is not the local LAN NIC, then Agent will be pushing up the incorrect IP address. You can force Agent to use a particular IP address by using the "agentID.txt" file - see Primus emc66921 for information about unstalling and using agentID.txt.

For other Agent related questions, also see emc254967

DB:3.05:Windows Clusters, Bsa And The Rscd Agent m9

I understand that we can install the RSCD agent on the nodes of a Windows 2008 cluster and that we can execute BSA jobs against those nodes. But in a 2 node cluster configuration, there is a active node and a passive node. So if we want to run a job to say, push a folder to the "cluster", we would have to know which node is active and push to that node, is this correct? If not, could anyone please clarify how Windows 2008 clusters are accessed within BSA.

    Many thanks.

DB:3.05:Windows Clusters, Bsa And The Rscd Agent m9

Yeah, basically, have a target that is mapped to the IP of the cluster, and one for each o fthe nodes as well mapped to their individual primary ips.

If you need to execute a job against whatever the active node is, you execute it against the target representing the cluster's vip, and otherwise, you execute against the individual node's target.

Just make sure you run an update server properties job against the target representing the cluster's vip before running any job on it however, to make sure that the properties of the target truly represent the node it's pointing to. This won't be done automatically.

Sounds like you're not familiar with clusters, so first of all I would adivce you to ask youself: do I really need an 3A/P cluster ? Indeed, recommended number of passive nodes in this situation is 2 rather than 1.

You have several factors to take also into account, most characterisic one being: how many users you do have in your environment, what profile do they belong to/usage of messaging, mailbox limits, etc (won't list them all )

Keep in mind that sizing is the most important thing in Exchange, no matter if you go clustered or not, poorly sized Exchange will have a short life

At last, be carefull with single-copy clusters with more than one Active Node, there's a (in)famous bug (I love this one )

I had the same problem and changed the Perl-File wbem_remote.pl under Agent_home\sysman\admin\scripts\emx\microsoft_sqlserver_database. Nearly at the end of the file you find an if condition on $wbem_remote. You have to set this variable to 0 before the if condition, then it works. Don't forget to change the file on all cluster nodes.

How cluster wait event comes in to picture as you are using only one node as Active. It comes in to account for RAC system running ACTIVE/ACTIVE on cluster? I am not sure why you are concerned on ACTIVE/Passive cluster with all database running only on one node.
