DB:3.62:Is Cross Group Dependency Allowed In Sun Cluster? 8x

Hi, I have some doubt on this question:

If serveral oracle server instances depends on a disk storage resource in a resource group, can these oracle resources be seperated into different groups? In other words, is cross-group resource dependency allowed in Solaris?

One more question on oracle resource. Supposing there are a few oracle server resources and one disk storage resource in a resource group and the oracle resources depends on storage resource. if anyone of the oracle resources failover, wil it cause the whole resource group to failover? How about if the storage resource fails?

DB:3.62:Is Cross Group Dependency Allowed In Sun Cluster? 8x

A few questions here, but I will try and answer all:-
Q: can these oracle resources be seperated into different groups?
A: Yes, absolutely, in fact I would recommend that each server instance is in its own resource_group to avoid mulitple failovers should one of the resources fail.
Q: is cross-group resource dependency allowed in Solaris?
A: In short yes, it is perfectly feasible to have multiple resources e.g. HAStoragePlus for each resource group. You can also have a separate resource group for the HAStoragePLus resource only and make your other Oracle resource groups dependent upon the HAStoragePlus resource group!
Q: Supposing there are a few oracle server resources and one disk storage resource in a resource group and the oracle resources depends on storage resource. if anyone of the oracle resources failover, wil it cause the whole resource group to failover?
A: Yes, if a resource within a resource group goes offline on one node and has to fail over the WHOLE resource group will fail over.
Q: How about if the storage resource fails?
A: If you have set-up a HaStoragePlus resource in your resource group, it depends on whether you are using failover filesystems or global filesystems. IF you are using failover filesystems and you lose access to your storage from one node, you also lose your local mount_points, so naturally a failover will occur. If however you are using global filesystems, and you lose access to the disks from the primary node, the other node will become the primary for the disks. You will still have your mountpoints and all access to the disks, will be negotiated over the private interconnects to the other node. However if you have set AffinityOn=true then ownership of the resource group will try to follow the owenership of the disk devices, i.e. the resource group will fail over to the node, that is now primary for the device_group.
Remember for HAStoragePlus resources these only act as a dependency consideration when the other resources are trying to start, i.e. is the mountpoint or device_group online? , regardless of which node is the primary for the devices.
I assume that in your situation you have one device_group, that is home for several Oracle instances, you want to split the instances to separate resource groups., but don't know how to a handle the device_group that has multiple dependencies.
It is perfectly acceptable to have a HAStoragePlus resource in each resource group, but be careful when setting AffinityOn=true, consider the fact that you may want separate instances running on separate nodes!, alternatively create a new resource group that only contains a HAStoragePLus resource and make the oracle resource groups dependent upon this new group, to avoid duplication, but of course you lose the ability to have affinity between your data service and the primary of the disks.

DB:3.43:Local Disk As Storage Resource In Oracle Vm 3 8x

    Hi

We have a couple of servers which we are going to install Oracle VM 3 and two guests per server. We are not going to use any HA features so we will create server pool, each consisting of one VM server.

The problem is each server only have one local disk (physically 2 but mirrored) and from documentation it seems that if we want to use local disk as storage resource this disk must not contain partition which is impossible in our case because we are installing the VM Server in one of partitions.

We wonder how can we workaround this problem? We dont have external storage array neither a NFS Server.

    Thanks all

DB:3.20:How To Store Db File On 4 Volumes? 87

    Hi.

I have 2 Win 2k3 boxes using Oracle RAC 9.x and 4 volumes on a storage to be used by Oracle. Besides that I have 2 local partitions on local disk.

I used local disk to do archiving, but I would like to know how should I use storage volumes to store the following DB strutuctures:

1 - Tablespace used exclusive for data
2 - Tablespace used exclusive for Index
    3 - UNDO tablespace
    4 - Temporary tablespace
    5 - Redo log online

I will not user rollback segments, just automatic undo management.

    What would be your advice?

    Thanks in advance.

    Alex

DB:3.20:How To Store Db File On 4 Volumes? 87

    Thank you very much.

I allways thought that a unique controller would be a bottleneck on a storage configuration. Now I am sure about that.

Why that subject is a myth? Does Oracle reads the whole index and only after that it goes to data query/transaction?

I will separate redo log online from temp and undo.

    Best regards.

    DB:3.19:Zfs Zil And Clustering aa

    Hi,
we are thinking about using a local RAM-Disks or local connected SSDs Disk for the ZIL, the other storage devices in the pool will be SAN disc connected via FC.

If we use this in a cluster (or use export / import to move the pool to another node in case of a node failure) we will loose the ZIL, eventually before its content has been commited to the SAN Disks.

So the question is, what happens to a ZFS pool if it losses its ZIL, specifically if we are storing Oracle data files and logs in the pool?

    Fritz

    DB:3.19:Zfs Zil And Clustering aa

You could lose data that has been declared commited to the application. The filesystem itself will still be consistent on disk, but could be out-of-date with respect to the application.

For a database, this seems particularly dangerous.

I must admit that I haven't worked with SVM for a while. So, what puzzles me is this:
    DB1: /dev/md/oradbset/dsk/d140 /dev/md/oradbset/rdsk/d140 /data1 ufs 3 no -
    DB2: /dev/md/oradbset/dsk/d400 /dev/md/oradbset/rdsk/d400 /data1 ufs 2 no -

Is this metaset on shared storage? Don't you have to use Solaris Cluster did devices to create them? You should really check the docs on how to use SVM with Solaris Cluster on shared devices.

In your initial post there was one additional thing, as you failover "testing" fell into the pingpong trap. You should check for Pingpong_interval in the docs. This mechanism prevents resource groups from bouncing between cluster nodes without a chance to get online anywhere.

    Ok, how about this

Today's large databases demand minimal scheduled downtime, and DBAs are often required to manage multiple databases with an increasing number of database files. Automatic Storage Management lets you be more productive by making some manual storage management tasks obsolete.
The Oracle Database provides a simplified management interface for storage resources. Automatic Storage Management eliminates the need for manual I/O performance tuning. It simplifies storage to a set of disk groups and provides redundancy options to enable a high level of protection. Automatic Storage Management facilitates non-intrusive storage allocations and provides automatic rebalancing. It spreads database files across all available storage to optimize performance and resource utilization. It also saves time by automating manual storage tasks, which thereby increases their ability to manage more and larger databases with increased efficiency. Different versions of the database can interoperate with different versions of Automatic Storage Management. That is, any combination of release 10.1.x.y and 10.2.x.y for either the Automatic Storage Management instance or the database instance interoperate transparently.

Thanks for your quick answer FZheng! and thanks for share about the real world, professional experience is the most important thing talking about job.
Now I know that in real data centers, the oracle software is installed in the server's local disk and all the database files are stored on SAN (Storage Area Network).. would you please write some devices names used to assembly or set a SAN? I'm curious!

Therefore, Oracle Software is in the server's local disk and inside a SAN, the Oracle ASM keeps all the database files... very interesting, now I understand the meaning of "ASM is based on the principle that the database should manage storage instead of requiring an administrator to do it. ASM eliminates the need for you to manage potentially thousands of database files."

Am I right if I create a partition to install the OS and the Oracle Base directory and another partition only for ASM? Maybe this configuration help me to visualize the real world Oracle installation... Server's local disk and SAN... What do you think about it? Please feel free to correct me.

One question more FZheng, In order to practice again manual administration (DBA tasks) of database files: datafiles, online redo log, archive redo log, backups in Flash Recovery Area, flashback database... etc how do you partition the hard disk to simulate a small server with just some hard disks installed?

We are seeing not great disk IO performance with local resources. The deployment has a web role and a background role. The web role gets the results from Azure storage and caches them on local resource folder. Next time, the web request is served from disk
cache if data is present in local resource folder. Due to large volume of data, the data cannot fit in memory cache.
The performance of writing and reading to/from local resource is not good. To rule out other app issues, we did a prototype and ran on3 year old machine with two cores and it still runs three times faster thanmediumsized web role.

    Using ESE database:
To read 5000 random records, among 500000 records each of 600 bytes, across 25 iterations takes an average of 1.2 secfrom Azure local resource. The same test takes0.42 seconds.Free memoryof 2 GB was available during the test.
    Using File System:
Same test is done, but records are stored as files in local resource folder. It took 800 milliseconds on Azure local resource. Time to write one record was 3.4 millisecond with lot more variance while on older machine it was 0.5 milliseconds consistently.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Why is the IO perf so bad on local resources? Is there a IO benchmark to validate the code? Any best practices for getting better IO?
    2. Is the IO perf related to role size? Like going to extra large helps?
    3. Why is IO speed is not very consistent? Is the IO throttled?
    4. Are the disks hosting local resources local to VM host? I understand that these are dynamic VHDs. Am I correct?
    5. Anyother alternate faster disk options available that can be configured as part of web role deployment?
    Please clarify.

This is not going to work. Your disk must support SCSI3 persistent reservations in order to be added into the cluster...and based on this error, I assume your local disk does not.If you've using a 3rd party vendor's application to trick cluster into seeing local disks as shared disks, you'll need to work with the 3rd party vendor to see how they recommend that you configure the storage resources in your cluster.Hope this helps.Visit my blog about multi-site clustering - http://msmvps.com/blogs/jtoner

DB:2.88:Using Local Storage With Oracle Vm 3.0 pj

Hello, Is it possible to use Local Storage with Oracle 3.0.

I currently have Oracle Manager 3.0 Installed Oracle Server 3.0 Installed.

Wanted to know if i could use the local storage of the server on which Oracle Server is installed for Virtual Machine storage instead of having a separate shared storage box.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.88:Using Local Storage With Oracle Vm 3.0 pj

I have two 500GB local disk on my machine, installed Oracle VM Server 3.0.1, discovered the VM Server with VM Manager and i can see the two disk, but i cannot use them or create a new server pool either. If VM manager sees the hardrive as "Generic Local Storage array "
you need to Click on "Server Pool", go to Repository Tab, select Physical disk ,

It will ask for Server Pool name, after providing the Serer pool name, locate the physical disk ,

it will add that local disk in the repository

but if you cant create SErver pool then you need to create a Shared storage , without shared storage , you will not be able to create SErver pool .

you can use : openfiler, nfs share to create shared storage ..

DB:2.86:Vmware Vm Disk Performance Problem - Local Sas Faster Than Shared Storage fd

    Dear VMWARE community,

I would like some feedback about this VMware local/shared disk performance experience, this may end up as not being a problem but a unique performance increase. My environment is the following:

Dell Power Edge 2900 Server (Quad Core, 16 GB Mem, 10 x 300GB 15k SAS with Perc 6i Controller (LSI) 256MB Cache) (Qlogic 2460 4GB)

    Local Storage Disk (Disk 0,1 - Raid 1) (Disk 2,3,4,5 - Raid5 - A) (Disk 6,7,8,9 - Raid5 - B)

    SAN (CX-10) - (Disk 0,1 - Raid 1) (Disk 2,3,4,5 - Raid5 - A) (Disk 6,7,8,9 - Raid5 - B) on 4GB 15k 3.5" Fibre Channel disks - Second Tray FC (4GB Interface)

    SAN (SAN Melody Box Ver 3.0/Win 2k8 64Bit) - (Disk 0,1 - Raid 1) (Disk 2,3,4,5 - Raid5 - A) (Disk 6,7,8,9 - Raid5 - B) on SAS 2.5" Drives 10k - Second Tray FC (4GB Interface)

    ESX 3.5 patched to 153875 (update 4)

Create a Windows 2003 SP2 virtual machine which has a C drive on Raid 5A and a D drive on Raid 5B (1 x CPU and 2GB mem), used eagerthickzero to zero out vmdk files so test results would be correct. Cloned server to local storage.

Test: Copy our SQL backup files 15GB each via Windows Explorer from C to D drive and observe speed / time. No other vm's are present on the esx server or local/shared storage / FC fabric.

Result: Local storage will copy files in 2 and a half minutes 100-120 MB/s and SAN (EMC CX-310 or San Melody) will copy at 65MB/s at roughly 5 mins - MB/s results from esxtop.

Your probably saying right now (like the other engineers/technicians which have seen this issue) "that's not possible, local storage is slower than shared storage. You don't know what your doing". Maybe I don't, but no technician has been able to increase the performance of the shared storage. Below are my many attempts to explore this performance issue further.

    Exploration of Performance Issues

Changed queue depth settings / throttle execution to 8, 32, 64, 100, 128 (changed the Disk.schednumreqoutstanding even though there are no competing vm's) - no difference to 5 minute file copy result.

Tried EMC CX-10 or SanMelody shared storage box with both having similiar 5 minute results (San melody box has indicated its cache (12GB) is not being pushed)

Ran IOmeter (max throughput 100% write) on both luns Raid5b (local / shared storage) Local storage results 520MB/s wr 8000 Cmds San Melody results 220MB/s wr 4000 Cmds (San melody was out performing CX-10) - Esxtop results

Transfered 15GB backup file to San Melody server and copied backup file from C to D drive and observed time taken - 2 and a half minutes. Time taken is the same as the virtual machine local storage test (assumption - disks can perform as well as esx local storage).

Added disks to both SANS but performance did not increase Raid 5 with 6 disks.

Upgraded Virtual machine (windows 2003) MS Storport driver and LSI SCSI driver on with no performance increase.

Set shares to high on vm shared storage disk, even though no other vm's are competing for resources - no difference.

Performance increase to both vm's on local and shared -* Created Windows 2008 vm with the same disk configuration Local storage performance increased was from 100-120Mb/s to 160MB/s. Shared storage increased from 65 MB/s to 80 MB/s.

    Still to explore

Lun alignment - Not done yet, will do on windows 2008 / 2003 servers soon.

I will soon install windows 2008 locally on a Power Edge 1950 (No vmware) and hook up to the same luns and copy the 15GB file and monitor the result. Then insert Esx3i usb key on the same PE 1950 and conduct the same vmware tests as above. I will even try usb via esx 4 and see if there are any differences. This test should isolate the performance bottle neck to storage or vmware.

My current opinion on this exploration so far:

First up, you may say shared storage results are acceptable with four disks working in a raid 5 pack, there is no problem (please tell me that conclusion). Just keep in mind, the virtual guest OS is a LSI controller and it is talking to a real LSI (perc controller) controller and there may be a natural performance boost because both devices are similar. ( It could be the 1% explanation which may explain this issue). Because the local disk resource is not being shared with other esx servers some of the shared storage processes/protocols are not used and is very effecient, hence a performance increase.

Secondly, the virtual machine on shared storage is not pushing either SAN (San melody or EMC San) hard enough under windows explorer when copying the file. The disk queues are not being pushed (monitored from ESXtop) and because the data is not being pumped hard enough from the vm to the queues, unlike the local storage which changes its quoue to 128 under esxtop. Changing the OS did have some impact on performance, as oppose to all other esx changes which did nothing (unexpected performance increase for all to digest). Adding disks to shared storage did not improve performance, because the work is not coming quick enough to either SAN from windows explorer. Could this problem be caused because windows is not aware of what hardware is actually underneath the hood and it is having some performance impact on the server.

I am happy to try any further testing / recommendations and if you have local storage, try this test and tell me your result.

    Cheers,

    Jason

DB:2.86:Vmware Vm Disk Performance Problem - Local Sas Faster Than Shared Storage fd

It's a bit old and I don't know if you are still testing. But keep in mind when you test with IOmeter you'll never overcome the caching effect from the storage controller. That is why you have that very high MB/s with IOmeter. To reduce it to a minimum you have to create a workspace (maximum disk size) in IOmeter that is bigger than the maximum assumed data that will be read or written.

    If you assume you'll have 100MB/s and you'll run your test for 3minutes you'll need to set it to more than 36864000 sectors ( (100 * 180 * 1024 *1024) /512).

Also check that you have set the correct disk alignment (start offset) , because by default that is usually at 63 sectors and with 64KB writing/reading (what you do with file copying usually) it'll cost performance.

    Hello,

I was planning to get san for my vmware storage. Right now we have local disk using as storage where hosts(esxi) and vms(virtual machines) reside. So now my query is how can we add san storage here instead of local storage.

Can we install host on local disk and vms on san or we shall boot both host and vms from san. can you please let me know the best practice.

DB:2.86:Problem With Disk Resource (Witness Disk) In Cluster xk

    Hi,

I am having problem with my windows server 2008 cluster (2 node cluster
using Node and disk majority quorum). I cannot move the cluster group Cluster Group containing the witness disk (Disk F)to another node. When I try to do that I get the following events registered in the
    cluster events:

    Source: FailoverClustering
    Event ID :1568
    Description:
Cluster disk resource 'Disk F' found the disk identifier to be stale. This may be expected if a restore operation was just performed or if this cluster uses replicated storage. The DiskSignature or DiskUniqueIds property for the disk resource has
    been corrected.

    Source:
    FailoverClustering
    Event ID :1069
    Description:
Cluster resource 'Disk F' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed.

Any idea what can be causing this and how to resolve this I search the internet without being able to find any helpful information.

    Regards,

    Urvin

    Hello Experts

I just upgraded my Oracle VM 2.2.1 to Oracle VM 3.2.2. I had a filesystem (ext3) from OVM 2.2.1 which has all my VMs. I want to use that filesystem in OVM 3.2.2. Is it possible? How can configure my Oracle VM 3.2.2 to use the Local Storage I Had from OVM 2.2.1?

I need to use local storage on OVM 3.2.2

    Any Suggestions?

    DB:2.85:Oracle Vm 3.2.2 X86_64 - Local Storage k1

Hopefully that original instance is still online /or you have backups of all the VMs.

On 3.2.1 I was able to add local storage as long as it was a complete disk (or raid group presented as a single disk). I was not able to add separate partitions (for example my 1 TB boot disk had lots of space left over that wasn't in the boot partitions that I couldn't use).

If you do have suitable local storage, in 3.2.1 it will basically automatically partition/format/mount the local storage for you. I am pretty sure you will lose any data on the disk(s) it will use ocfs2 and not ext3 or whatever else you may want instead.

Once the local storage is online as a repository, you then bring in the VMs as templates... I used the SimpleHTTPServer technique documented in this thread but there are multiple ways to do it:

how to store data local hard disk in flash applications

    DB:2.83:Local Storage 3f

If you want to store only simple objects (such as user preferences, local high scores, etc.), use SharedObject class.

If you want to access filesystem of user's computer, you'll need to use AIR for this. You can't access filesystem from browser-based application. At most, prompt user to browse file and upload it to the server (this can be achieved using FileReference class).

Thats a good thing right? From personal experience, I have found the impact on server resources to be minimal once online archibing is implemented. Youi'll see various debates on the forumson whether to create dedicated archive servers or to home
the databases on the existing mailbox server infrastructure, and that is really one of those Its up to you things. I dont use dedicated archive servers and the impact as been minimal to the existing ones. Your milage may vary :)

    Hello,

I am running ESXi 4 Installable on a Dell Poweredge 2900 - local storage only.

Using the free license which came with the download, is there a way that I can share a .virtual disk amongst two or more local VMs (if so, how?)? I have configured a disk with the following parameters: Thick, SCSI LSI Logic, SCSI 1:0 Bus, Independent/Persistent. Both of the VMs that I wish to access the shared disk have been setup with the identical disk parameters, pointing to the same location on the datastore. The first VM assigned to the disk boots perfectly, any additional VM that I boot give a "Cannot access locked resource" error while trying to access the shared disk.

I know it is a simple question (I'm a simple person - lol), but I have not been able to find a straight answer on the blogs concerning this matter.

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:2.80:Sharing Virtual Disk f9

You must use a "application cluster" configuration.

In your case a cluster in a box could be fine.

See: Clustering Software in a VMware environment

The trick is create a second vmdk disk attacched to a new SCSI controller and use (on this controller) a option to share this controller and his disks.

now disk is online on node 2. restart both node. I run cluster validation test and it also show disk in result. But problem is that node 2 disk is not listed under cluster disk resource. I try to add disk resource and getting following error

kindly advice how to fix the issue.
    thx

DB:2.79:No Disk Suitable For Cluster Disk Were Found 8a

If you have a 2-node failover cluster with a SQL Server instance (standalone not Failover Cluster Instance) on each node with Availability Group(s) between the two instances, there should be no cluster disks (just local disks).
None of the disks should be selected as cluster disks in Failover Cluster Manager. The disks are still visible to the standalone SQL Server instances on each node of the cluster (because they are standalone installs not FCI SQL Server installs).
For example, a simple setup would be a C drive for Windows Server 2012 and a D drive for SQL Server on each cluster node (the failover cluster is only used the SQL Server Availability Groups component - not to cluster the SQL Server Instances).
If you used a Node and File Share Witness Majority quorum model for the failover cluster, there would be no need to have any cluster disks in this solution. Therefore the cluster validation wizard would warn that there are no disks available for clustering
    - but in this case that is perfectly ok.
The main thing in your scenario is that you use ONLY local disks NOT clustered disks for SQL Server. If you have used clustered disks for SQL Server, then you'll need to uninstall that SQL Server instance and reinstall after you've fixed up the disk configuration.

when I use the cat /proc/partitions command i get a list of partitions that should e in the external storage. i want to know if there is a way to tell whether those partitions that are displayed are from a shared external storage or have they been wrongly created in the VM's local storage.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

    DB:2.77:Oracle Rac Shared Storage cc

A simple way to check whether a disk is shared between nodes is to run fdisk on the one node, create a da type partition on it, do a write to update the partition table - and then do a fdisk listing on the other node to determine if it now sees the partition change to the disk.

Other methods include using the dd command on one node to write some data into the 1st 1KB block of the disk and using the od command on the other node to dump the block and inspect the contents.

On real iron, the WWID of the device can be compared between the nodes - as the WWID is a unique h/w based device signature (and used by multipath for example for shared device identification). No idea how WWIDs are supported in a virtualised environment - something that you should consider looking into.

DB:2.74:Oracle Vm Server 3.0.3 And Oracle Vm Manager 3.0.3 - Local Disks ? zk

    All,

Using Oracle VM Server/Manager 3.0.3, I'm trying to use the local disks on the OVM server for the Virtual Machines, as a newbie with this product, I can't figure out how to do this!
    The Manual says:

Local storage consists of hard disks installed locally in your Oracle VM Server. In a default installation, Oracle VM Server will only use the first disk (/dev/sda), leaving other disks available for storage.

As long as no partition and data are present the device will be detected as a raw disk. The choice is yours to use the local disks either to provision logical storage volumes as disks for virtual machines or to install a storage repository. If you place a storage repository on the local disk, an OCFS2 file system is installed.
    Note

Local storage can never be used for a server pool file system.

Local storage is fairly easy to set up because no special hardware for the disk subsystem is required. Since the virtualization overhead in this setup is limited, and disk access is internal within one physical server, local storage offers reasonably high performance.

    FAIRLY easy ?

I even tried to create a OCFS2 on a unused disk, after creating a partrition, but it says that the system is already using the device, and refuses to create the FS

    mkfs.ocfs2 /dev/sdb1
    mkfs.ocfs2 1.8.0
    Cluster stack: classic o2cb
/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a ocfs2 volume here!

It's a bit of a waste to have 8*300GB in your VM server you can't use ?

    Thanks

    Paul

If they are, modify /etc/multipath.conf until only the boot disk is blacklisted. Essentially, Oracle VM Manager only lists devices that appear in /dev/mapper as potential physical disk targets.

This issue seems to have cropped up a couple of times but I could not find a solution, so apologies if I am covering old ground.

    Background:

VMware installation in progress. Cluster with 2 x ESX 3.5 (R3) servers (Dell Power Edge 1950) with Virtual Center (2.5 running as VM). At present there is no SCSI attached storage so all VMs are currently on local disc (See "work in progress").

Trying to virtualise physical machine (Win2K3 Terminal Server). We chose manual conversion, and shrank disks to minimum allowed size. When trying to select a storage device (local disk on ESX 1) we get the above error. The logs say "The host name used for the connection does not match the subject name on the host certificate". I will attach conversion logs to this post. Any help or pointers appreciated.

DB:2.73:Vmware Converter Issue: Vmware Converter Destination Resource Pool Not Found d1

Can you please post the full log bundle (File gt; Export logs....)? That agent log file does not include the "Destination resource pool not found" error.

Ah... you are running the Converter 4.0.2 Enterprise VC Plugin, not Converter Standalone 4.0 (please include the version in the post when possible).

So I guess you need to manually gather the logs, but still there was no reference to that error in the log you uploaded so please try to find whichever log file has that error in it.

(If your question has been resolved please mark the answers as "Helpful" or "Correct".)

Hi SivaNot as far as I'm aware. We use standard volume names if a drive is SAN-attached, so we could search the volume name for a string (LUN for example) using the OS command fsutil. But this is outside our direct control (the volumes are not named by the DBA team)HTHEwanIf you have found this post helpful, please click the 'Vote as Helpful' link (the green triangle and number on the top-left).

DB:2.72:Can I Create Storage Pool As A Disk Partition? 83

    Hi!

I'm planning to install Oracle VM 3.0.0 not in HA configuration, so i have only 5 local disks.
Is it possible to create storage pool not on whole physical disk? I partitioned one of my disk, but VM Manager GUI shows me only whole disk. So i'm not able to select partition.

Does OVM 3.0.3 have CLI commands documentation?

Now i see, that the idea to have 2 mirrored 2Tb disks was stupid. I had to use one smaller disk for Oracle VM Server and another one for storage pool. And largest disk as shared disks for VM's. Correct?Yup, that sounds good. Oracle VM isn't really designed to work with mdadm raid sets. Though, that should be fine for the OS. It won't work for the storage repository though.

Another question is, is it possible to import ISO image with OEL5.7 Linux using NFS?I don't believe so. You have to import via HTTP or FTP. You can do a Network Boot of PVM guests from HTTP, FTP, NFS and TFTP, though.

    Dear All,

I want to know how much RAM,CPU and Storage... [HARDWARE RESOURCE] required for establish an Qlikview environment

    for 10TB data in Oracle.

    Regards,

    Rahul

    DB:2.72:Hardware Required x7

Hi - just a word of caution..

If you plug 10TB as a raw figure into a formula to calculate RAM needs you will most likely grossly over estimate your true RAM requirements for QLIK.

Its important to think about data requirements in terms of a limited data model not a raw database.

That doesn't come across in the documentation where we need to do a better job.

A bit more: a single QlikView app is supported by a single data model that will cover a series of dimensions and calculate a series of KPIs. It will answer a 'family' of questions about that data model. It will give a user access to any intersection or possible summary in that data and its very easy to overload a user with information .

If you are familiar with BO , Cognos or any other enterprise reporting platform a customer will likely have more than 1 data model per database to support different families of questions. Building a giant model (in any tool) off a large database becomes harder and harder to serve all needs and ultimately becomes an exercise in compromising everything from agility to performance. Its better and mandatory in qlikview to address a sizable chunk of data in pieces that users can manage.

In Qlik , for a 10TB database you will likely need more than one data model to 'package' all the information into a format that a user can actually consume. That means 'pieces' of the database for each qlikview app and sizing the pieces (probably just the first piece to begin with) and not something like 10TB disk = 4TB RAM

i'm not saying there aren't the odd use case that needs a very deep (many rows) data set. They exist. But they aren't the norm hence my comment.

    Hi,
If you have valid backups, pfile/spfile the complete list of datafiles(preferably a trace of latest control file), then you can restore your database.
As you said that your OS is Windows, you can do the following:
restore the datafiles in the original location
Create a Oracle service using oradim
    mount the database
    recover your database(applying the archivelogs)
    open the database.
PS: Don't directly apply this procedure, if you haven't taken backup of existing files or if you don't have a valid backup somewhere on a tape or so. If you don't have a backup, then take a backup of all ur datafiles and control files and then start this procedure.

    hello everybody,
i have two microsoft2000 advanced server in a cluster with a shared RAID5 storage. i have installede Oracle 9i on both the servers setting the Oracle Home on the local disks and the database on the shared disk. i mean, i created the db for the node A on E:\oradata (where E is the shared disk), then i've renamed oradata-oradata_old, then i've created the SAME instance on the node B, i 've removed the oradata dir created by the second installation and renamed oradata_old-oradata again.
Now the two instance are correctly working, depending on which node is the owner of the shared disk.
i've installed FailSafe 3.2 on both nodes and i'm trying to configure a new Group for my db. I made the group and i created the virtual ip. now i'm trying to add the database resource but this is what i get when i try to verify my standalone db:

FS-10052 Failed to open Oracle Net configuration file %s
Cause: Cannot open the listener.ora or tnsnames.ora file.
Action: Check that the Oracle Net configuration file exists on the system.

FS-10179 Problem related to the DLL file for the NL parser encountered when
    opening file %s
Cause: The specified file cannot be opened due to a secondary error.
    Action: See the secondary errors.

i followed every step or the Installation Guide and Fail Safe tutorial and i can't find anything wrong!!!
it seems as if FailSafe can't find or open the listener.ora, but it's in the standard position in the OracleHome and when i startup the db from Enterprise Manager, it works properly.

it's extremely urgent. please, any hint?!

    than you very much!

You installed the CRS for what reason? RAC? ASM?
Do you have a RAC cluster? Is it working?
Do you want to build a RAC cluster?

That something is a SAN confers almost no information of value. Is it copper or fibre? Is it EMC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, NetApp, Pillar, or someone else's? Does it have RAW devices that can be used to create ASM DiskGroups or a file system?

Thanks-Once again, multiplexing the files is an oracle issue, and has nothing to do with whether you are on a SAN, a local RAID, or local discreet disks. If the directories where you place the files are on separate disks, the multiplexed files will be on separate disks. If the directories are not on separate disks, then the files will not be on separate disks. oracle doesn't know or care if they are on separate disks or not, as that is totally abstracted by the storage system.

I thought the above was pretty clear .. so let's continue, assuming the above has been implemented ..
    Assume the value of ORACLE_SID=orcl

    oracle mkdir -p /ora01/oraredo/$ORACLE_SID
oracle mkdir -p /ora02/oraredo/$ORACLE_SIDThen in sqlplus:
ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 4 ('/ora01/oraredo/orcl/redo4a.rdo',
    '/ora02/oraredo/orcl/red04b.rdo')
    SIZE 51200K
/red04a.rdo will be placed on /ora01, which is mounted to lvol1, which uses disks 1 through 3.
red04b.rdo will be placed on /ora02, which is mounted to lvol2, which uses disks 4 through 6.

Actually, at least on my SAN, there is one other layer of abstraction: physical disks are grouped (in whatever raid configuration is chosen) into a "disk group". Multiple disk groups may then be grouped into a logical volume (lvol).

    disk 1 |
    disk 2 +--- Dgroup 1 +
    disk 3 | |
    +--- Lvol 1 --- mount to /ora1
    disk 4 | |
    disk 5 +--- Dgroup 2 +
    disk 6 |

    disk 7 |
    disk 8 +--- Dgroup 3 +
    disk 9 | |
    +--- Lvol 2 --- mount to /ora2
    disk 10 | |
    disk 11 +--- Dgroup 4 +
disk 12 |In this new diagram, any file written to any directory under /ora1 can be written to any disk in dgroup 1 or 2 - disks 1 through 6. If a striping RAID config is used, the file will be broken into pieces and written to all of disks 1 through 6.

DB:2.67:Re: San Storage Vs. Internal Server Disks 9z

There are raw devices and then there are raw devices.

When I referred to raw devices I am referring to using the actual scsi block device for the LUN (via a fibre channel or via SRP using Infiniband).

I am not referring to a special Linux character device also called a raw device, that was used on scsi block devices because the latter did not support direct I/O.

So please read "+raw device+" as the actual scsi device for that LUN. E.g. +/dev/emcpowerdev+ when running EMC Powerpath to manage your access to EMC LUNs, or +/dev/mpath/dev+ when using Multipath to do the same, or simply +/dev/dev+ as local (or unmanaged LUN) devices.

    Folks,

We are running OWB 9.2.0.2 with Oracle 9.2.0.5 DB running on two Win2000 Advanced Server boxes attached to both inteneral disk and an IBM Shark Storage Area Network.

The Design Resository sits on the SAN and we are trying to deploy to either a database located on local disk or to another database located on the SAN disk.

We are getting an RPE-01012 eror trying to deploy mappings 1) From External table to DB Table and 2) From DB Table to Dimension Table.

However, we are able to successfully deploy mappings from a flat file to a db table.

Oracle has now labeled our problem as Bug 3851732.

Is anyone else running OWB and trying to deploy to a similar configuration? If so, are you experiencing similar problems?

    Thanks. Bruce

    Nikolia,

I am able to deploy mapping modules that use a flat file data source, but am not able to deploy mappings with db-to-db table, or db-to-dimension tables.

So, you previous understanding is correct. However, we are still getting the RPE-01012 error in some conditions - not all. And, the query is failing with ORA-00904: "wb_rt_platform_repository" invalid identifier.

I am also pursuing this with Tech Support via metalink, and have asked for ways that we can confirm our software installation is correct (such as a list of file names and compile dates) and ways to confirm that schemas, users objects, etc have been properly created.

    Thanks.

    DB:2.66:Asm Vs. Local Disk? zz

I know there are various posts and articles on ASM but nothing really indicates what would be a disadvantage to using the local disk instead of ASM...

I have a very small implementation of Oracle 11g R2 that I configured using local disk storage due to the complexity involved around getting ASM and grid setup. Specifically, it's quite a hassle to get additional storage volumes allocated to our VM's so it was just easier to use the mount that was previously allocated. It is my understanding to implement ASM you have to have raw volumes to directly reference so I had to put off ASM for the timebeing.

I do see the advantages and benefits of using ASM but they really only become apparent when dealing with very large and growing implementations. For a simple database environment, is settling for local disk going to provide any disadvantages in the longrun? Are there any performance problems with one vs. the other? Am I going to cripple the potential of the environment longterm by setting it up initially with local disk or can it easily be converted to ASM if growth demands it at a later time?

Thanks very much for your feedback. :)

    DB:2.66:Asm Vs. Local Disk? zz

Mirroring over mirroring is definitely not recommended. What's best is to use ASM's Striping capabilities with external Raid. You can do it all with ASM as well(the best thnig to do ) but still, the Mirroring from external ways wont be a bad idea too.

DB:2.65:Svmotion. Error:"Vm Has Vistual Disk In Link-Cloned Mode That Prevents Migration" 17

    Hi,

None of these worked for me, but then that is typical for my luck - especially as this is Friday 13th

Anyway it turns out I had a special case so I'll document my working fix in case somebody else reading this has my kind of slightly different layout:

My problem arose when I SVMotioned just the C: drive volume of a Windows VM and left two other volumes where they were. Both these other volumes were in Independant Mode (persistent) because I didn't want snapshots taking of these drives when a general VM snapshot was taken as part of the main backup process.

I noticed after the move a considerable degradation in performance of the VM and discovered that the Dmotion... files were still present in the original location and looking at the settings of the VM the two disks that weren't moved were still referenced as being redirected to the DMotion... file.

As I said none of the snapshot recovery methods worked because the problem disks were in Independent Mode, so I powered down the VM, unchecked the Independent Mode setting on each disk and then performed the apply snapshot and delete snapshot method and this time on deleting the snapshot the Dmotion... file was rolled back into the main VM files and after a lengthy recovery (as the DMotion was over 6GB) the snapshot delete completed successfully and all the references to DMotion had been cleaned up.

The VM then started successfully and so far the performance issues seem to have gone. I can now go to the other two VMs showing this problem and perform the same, one of the DMotion files is over 23GB as it is a busy VM so it will be interesting.....

It appears that I/O was being redirected via the DMotion.... file and this was causing the poor performance, and the size of one of these files indicates it acts a snapshot file and records changes - therefore when anything happens on this VM this change log has to be referenced. I would imagine that in time the VM would just have ground to a halt, so it is important that this is monitored as it could become a serious issue.

My advice therefore is that if you have a single disk VM that can be snapshotted OK then use SVMotion as I have never had an issue with it, but once you go multi disk then think very carefully whether an offline migration wouldn't be a better idea.

All of this was performed on VSphere with the latest patches, so it appears the bug fix isn't here yet!

DB:2.65:Oracle Home On Local Disk, Db On Shared. Can't Add Dependency To Db Rg ck

We are building a 3 node cluster, each node is on the SAN. Based on the promise of doign rolling upgrades to Oracle and other apps, we allocated one SAN disk to each node to be used as a "local" binarie storage point. There are multiple other shared disks that will hold the databases, etc. Using SVM for everything. All disks, resources, and our first couple database resource groups have worked fine except when rebooting a node. The "local" SAN disk which is not part of any resource group, obviously is not online or FS-mountable unless we manually online the disk group. OK, this is probably really stupid, but does this binary installation disk have to be put into it's own RG with HAStoragePlus and all that? If that was the case, then the Oracle server group, or resource, would have to depend on the binary disk/FS but then what about when it needs to move to another node? Can a RG depend on "any" other RG on any other node? We will have multiple RG's for multiple databases and applications all basically needing the local disk to be up all the time.
Maybe need to just make a startup script that onlines the device and mounts the FS's?

    thanks in advance!

    - Normal user response time
    - Normal active sessions for peak time.

    2) Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.7 on RHEL4 U2 using HP EVA6000 with 16 disks (10000rpm each). I am not an HP EVA expert but what i know is that is configured with 4 Disk Groups for Oracle Database (VRAID1). With the following results:

    - We expected same or better performance, but it was not our case. We only migrated local storage to HP EVA storage.
    - Performance starts degrading in 30 minutes when users begin doing their work, we start killing some users, we start getting more active sessions and they stay active for a long time, more "buffer gets"....in general not acceptable performance for users and business.
    - We have exact # of CPU, exact RAM, exact OS configuration, exact SGA Oracle configuration...the only change is the new storage.

DB:2.65:Database Archive Log Placement On San Storage s8

Hello,I have a question regarding database archive log placement on SAN disk.1. Is duplex archive logging typically used for all database configurations?2. Are the archive log copies separated onto different physical storage volumes?, and separate volume groups? - allowing local recovery in the event of data loss of a single volumeMy primary focus is Oracle and DB2 implementations, however I believe the same questions would apply for most database instances. Thanks in advanceRyan

DB:2.65:Database Archive Log Placement On San Storage s8

Assuming duplex archiving means writing the same transaction log to 2 seperate physical files, then the answer (in my experience) is that this is not a normal occurence especially in a SAN environment. You do your mirroring at the array level to match your risk threshold. (i.e. you can do 3 mirrors, remote site mirroring, etc.) Avoiding doing duplex archive logs cuts-down on some overhead to your host by letting your storage array (which is optimized to do it) handle the extra write overhead. As for 2) it is definitely in your best interest both for logistical (backup, recovery, replication, etc.) and performance reasons to have your archive logs and core database volumes isolated on different volume groups and physical drives. This is definitely a best practice and should be followed for all but the smallest of database environments.

Meanwhile, as the disk that you want to convert is a SAN based LUN, please attach the LUN directly to the Windows system without reserved by cluster service, and then check if you can convert it to dynamic disk first. This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights.

    Hello All,

Is there any way to create a true Oracle VM cluster.

What I mean is that; there is no shared storage because the local storage simply replicates synchronously to the 2nd node?

Any way using Oracle VM cluster to create a cluster across 2 machines using their own local storage?

    Thanks,

I have a 2-node failover cluster set up on Windows Server 2008. I'm using the Node Disk Majority option for the quorum setting. It's currently running SQL Server 2005 and has several SAN LUNs for storage. The SQL Server service, SQL Server Agent service and the storage are all set up under a general cluster service (named SQL Server 2005 cluster). When I failover SQL Server 2005 cluster to the other node, everything works fine. Except for the witness resource. It is shown as still being on the first node.Should the witness disk also failover to the second node? Should it be a dependency somewhere? The problem I'm running into is that if I restart the first node with the witness disk still on it, the quorum fails and the cluster then fails. The problem may be that I just don't understand the clustering concept or setup very well. But any help on this would certainly be appreciated.Kurt NowackiSQL Server/Oracle DBA

    Hi al

Customer ask me some question and hope that some specialist can help me:

    1) Is ST6000 support RAID migration from any RAID type to any RAID type?
    2) Can I upgrade firmware non-disruptively in ST6000 ? In some presentation slide about ST6000, I see can, but I think it can not and we have to reboot storage controller after upgrade.
    3) Sun ST9000 support virtualization and can control storage from other vendors, but what is the list of storage from other vendor that it can support ?
    4) Sun ST9900: With Virtual Storage Machine, we can create virtual storage with some resource (cache, I/O, disk) but can we re-assign (add/remove) resource online without data lost and non-disruptively ?
    5) Sun ST9900: Can we create a LUN with disk resource spread in several external storage of different vendor ?

    Thanks all

    DB:2.64:Some Storage Question !!! pj

    Hello,

    1) Yes, however the following applies:
#9632;There can be only one VDisk in a Pool, if you are changing the level at the pool level
#9632;There can only a single volume in a VDisk, if you are changing the level at the volume level
#9632;Migrations to a RAID 1+0 require an even number of drives
#9632;The volume sizes remain unchanged, so a migration from a RAID 5+1 to 3+3 would require that the volumes can be contained within the space of 3 drives of the original 5+1 VDisk

    2) Yes for controller firmware, No for disk firmware. If it is a dual-controller array (with multi-pathing properly configured), then you can do one controller at a time, while the first controller reboots, it will fail over to the remaining controller on the redundant path. Disk firmware will REQUIRE down time however..

    Hope this helps,
    Sean

DB:2.63:Local Storage Resource Need And Use. How It Difference From Actual Vm Instance Drives? ap

    Hi,
I am not able to quite understand the use of local storage resource that we configure from service definition file. The local storage is not durable and provides access same as file storage we would typically use in local environment like c:\my.txt.
As this localstorage is not durable; so is the information stored on (for example C drive)role instance VM. So what is the advantage we get by using local storage resource? Instead we can save it on C drive of role instance VM. Why local storage
is recommended instead of using VM's drive?
Please let me know your views.

    Hi,
The way we can not access C drive files of one instance to another, similar way we can not access local storage resource created on one role instance on another role instance. It is still same.

What i mean is apparently (not 100% sure of anything with 2.2) you have a choice, either shared storage or local storage not both. Say i set up a server pool with shared storage but in that server pool i each node has a ton of local disk as well. If i try to add a local repo it attempts to add it to both. If i simply mount the storage manually i can't import the guests i put on it into Oracle VM Manager. There is a whole bunch of chicken and the egg with these doc. I'm still trying to work it all out.

After deleting /etc/ovs-agent/db about 5000 times i finally got an actual HA cluster working. The docs and SR's aren't working for me.

DB:2.63:Re: Oracle Vm 2.2 Repo Managment cs

    ScoleriGSI wrote:
Yeah from what i can tell and from what they're telling me on metalink is that you need to have the server pool created in the Manager before you can issue the repo.py -i . All very convoluted and I hope they fix it soon - especially the detail in the documentation. You should not have to run *./repos.py -i* on your root repository: this is done automatically when the pool is created (you just need to -n to create and -r to set as root). You only run -i on additional repositories you add after the root repository.

Are you using /dev/raw* devices or ASMLIB devices on your SAN.

Important thing is, when specifying ASM_DISKSTRING you have to include all devices, which he has seen till now.
If they were raw devices, your diskstring would look like '/dev/raw/raw*,path_to_nas_asm_file'
If they were ASMLIB devices, it should be something like 'ORCL:*,path_to_nas_asm_file'

From Unisphere, Click System Storage Resource Health.A table listing all of the instances of storage resources on your storage system appears.

Click a storage resource to view the status and detailed health information associated with each storage resource. Displayed information includes:

Server Health: Status of the Storage Server associated with the storage resource that the storage resource uses.

Storage Pool Health: Information about the storage pool that the storage resource uses. When multiple storage elements are associated with the storage resource, the storage pool information is shown for each storage element associated with the storage resource. For example, for Exchange storage resources, storage pool information is shown for each storage group (Exchange 2003/2007) or database (Exchange 2010) element associated with the storage resource.

DB:2.62:Deploy Non-Ha Vm On Cluster pc

What's the best way to move a currently HAVM to a local disk resource on a clustered server? I have some local non-clustered disk that I want to use for less critical VMs.
    Things I've tried:
    - I tried Migrate Storage on the VM and entered a local disk path (C:\VM\test). I received error 2409 (The specified path is not a valid folder path on %ComputerName).
    - I tried storing the VM in the SCVMM Library and then attempting to deploy it. The only available paths are clustered disks. When entering my non-clustered path manually, I again receive 2409.

    Kristian has it right on.
SCVMM does not allow you to do this. It assumes that if it is a cluster that you are deploying to, then all the VMs must be HA.
You must use the Hyper-V Managment Console to Export the VM to your local storage, and then Import this new copy. (then you can delete the origional through SCVMM - after testing of course).
You can still manage the VM using SCVMM after you import it back (eventually VMM will discover it).

Brian Ehlert (hopefully you have found this useful) http://ITProctology.blogspot.com
well that's just plain dumb, so it's not possible to use the convert a physical machine to non-HA storage.
AnothergeniusMS decision made for no good reason that inexplicably hamstrings functionality and is completedevoidof any common sense.

DB:2.62:Redo Log Files And Undo Tablespace Should Be On Local Or Shared Storage?? dk

    Hi,

I am new to oracle RAC. In oracle RAC 10g R2, where redo log files and undo files should be stored? is it on local storage or shared storage (but not on ASM like OCR and voting disk) or on ASM?

Each instance must have its own set of redo log files and undo files but if they are on local storage how it will be accessed by other instances in case of recovery?
Why redo log files and undo files can't be stored on ASM?

    Thanks,
    DB

DB:2.62:Redo Log Files And Undo Tablespace Should Be On Local Or Shared Storage?? dk

    DB,

Quick Answer is: They needs to be shared and be accessed by all the instances in RAC. It does not matter if you store them on ASM or Shared row devices or any Cluster file System.

Placing ORLs (Online Redo Logs) and UNDO lcoally would work just fine during normal course of database operation becuase they are thread specific. They do not need to be accessed by other instances as long as you bring down all the instances gracefully all the time. But in a real world, that is not possible every time and once in a while instance crashes due to any bug or for any other reason. What will happen then when you have all the ORLs and UNDOs stored locally (not shared by other instance in RAC).

When the instance in multi-node RAC goes down, the surviving instance performs the instance recovery of a failed instance by rolling forward all the blocks belonging to commited transactions from ORLs to the respective datafiles. Same way, after the surviving instance needs to perform the roll back of the uncommit transactions by applying the bbefore image of the uncommited blocks from undo tablesspace of the failed instance.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Bhavin

DB:2.62:How To Create A New Resource Group For Oracle Rac (Raw Volume) jk

    Hi all.

I have Sun Cluster 3.1 with Oracle RAC.

We already have i disk group - (raw volume) for oracle with a resource group but now I want to add another disk group (raw volume), what procedures after that? how to create resource group for my new oracle RAC disk group?

    Best Regards

DB:2.62:How To Create A New Resource Group For Oracle Rac (Raw Volume) jk

I'm confused, what version of Oracle RAC are we talking about here? Is this 9i or 10g?

I also can't see the link between disk groups and resource groups in this context. A shared disk group (assuming its VxVM) isn't registered with the cluster framework and is simply used by Oracle RAC.

Could you provide more info about what you have done and what you are trying to do?

    Thanks,

    Tim
