I have recently purchased a new Antivirus K7 installed it on my Lappy. i wanna know does this impact your application or Dbase Bcoz the application is running fine after starting the services in linux.
The only thing is that i am not able access the database through TOAD or SQL*Plus. the same error i am facing in both.

When I try to connect to the database (Oracle8.0.5) at the SQL*PLUS Client (Windows XP) I am getting following error message:
    ORA-12571: TNS packet writer failure.

I ping ip address n it didn't have any errors but when I tnsping it have a same error "TNS packet writer failure".

I'm sure that no problem at my tnsname.ora n sqlnet.ora

For information, I have another client don't have this error n run very well whereas have a same network, tnsname n sqlnet.

Anyone can give me an idea? i'm really need ur help.

If the log file has a 4G limited by oracle?

DB:5.84:Shouldnt This Be Simple? Sybase To Oracle Data Transfer Task f7

I'd like to transfer some records between the following 2 tables.  Surely this should be a no-brainer - what am i missing that is making this so impenetrable?
I am currently:  Hoping someone can help me get here:  (this is my first time of using SSIS btw).

here is the source table (MS Sql Server 2005, SP 2)

    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[imagine_divs](
    [div_mnemonic] [nvarchar](11) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
    [div_date] [int] NULL,
    [div_amount] [float] NULL,
    [div_status] [nvarchar](16) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
    [div_curr_mnem] [nvarchar](11) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
    [div_upd_date] [int] NULL,
    [div_payment_date] [int] NULL
    ) ON [PRIMARY]

here is the target table (Oracle 9i)

    CREATE TABLE myschema.imagine_divs
    (div_mnemonic NVARCHAR2(11),
    div_date NUMBER(*,0),
    div_amount  NUMBER(20,5),
    div_status NVARCHAR2(16),
    div_curr_mnem NVARCHAR2(11),
    div_upd_date NUMBER(*,0),
    div_payment_date NUMBER(*,0))
    /

I used the SSIS Import and Export wizard to copy data between the two tables, and attempted to execute it.   I use Sql Native Provider on source, and Native Ole DB\Oracle Provider for OLEDB.  however, I get an error:

[Destination - IMAGINE_DIVS [37]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available.  Source: OraOLEDB  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: ORA-12571: TNSacket writer failure.

I notice that the wizard has created a data flow task with 3 steps: source - imagine_divs, Destination - IMAGINE_DIVS and data conversion 1.

Data Conversion 1 seems to be taking my source nvarchar columns and converting them to DT_STR with twice the size (for example div_mnemonic become DT_STR, size: 22).

If I change the mappings in the OLE DB Destination Editor, such that only the numeric and date-typed columns are included in the transfer, it works fine.

If I include any string-typed column in the destination editor mappings, I get the TNS Packet Writer error.  If I remove the Data Conversion step and connection teh source and destination tasks directly, i get validation errors saying that:

Error 2 Validation error. Data Flow Task: OLE DB Destination [294]: Columns div_mnemonic and DIV_MNEMONIC cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types. Package4.dtsx 0 0
this is despite the fact that everything is unicode here (right?)

what in the world is going on?

DB:5.84:Shouldnt This Be Simple? Sybase To Oracle Data Transfer Task f7

    1. i'm not using varchar2, I'm using nvarchar2.
    2. The point is that both the input and the output are unicode (as per their table definitions), so what's the conversion issue here?

in any case, I have worked around the issue, by simply changing the source and target table definitions NOT to be unicode.

Hi folks, I'm on NT 4.0 SP6 and I'm trying to install the Personal Edition of Oracle 9i with General Purpose database and the Database Configuration Assistant displays error "ORA-12571: TNS PACKET WRITER FAILURE".

I've read a lot here in the installation forum; I've tried installing from the /install/win32/setup.exe, I've
tried different database types, running the DCA standalone after the install, and I still get this error.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

Also, in the beginning of the install it tells me that I should have MTS (Microsoft Transaction Server) installed. Is this true? Do I really need MTS for a 'personal edition', non-networked version of 9i?

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

    Additionally:
I saw someone respond that Personal Edition was only for
Windows 98. I don't beleive that this is true. I know folks that have it installed on XP and 2000, as well as 98.

There seems to be a lot of problems with DCA posted in the installation forum. Why doesn't Oracle fix it so it works right?

    Many thanks for this forum.

I am attempting to get a RH Linux 6.0 machine to see our Oracle 7.3.4 server, running on a remote Solaris machine. I got Oracle 8.0.5, which I was assured would work. I fought with it for a while, and finally I think I've got it installed properly. TNSPING says OK when I point it at our database. The problem is that when I try to use sqlplus (or perl DBD, which is my ultimate goal), it give me:

    ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure

I am certain that the server is running smoothly, so this is definitely a problem on the Linux machine. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Thank you very much.

Although the message mentions TNS, it is not about the TNSNAMES.ORA file -- this file has not be changed in months, and, the problem seems to be intermitant...

Has anyone experienced this problem? This is a first for me...

    Hi

I am using Reports 6i in client/server environment. In one workstation (HP notebook with Windows XP) we receive TNS-12571: TNS:packet writer failure when trying to connect to database. We test this against different Oracle database versions (8i, 9i, 10g) on two different network environments - the result is the same. On the same computer we have installed 10g client and it connect successfully to the databases.
Have someone experience with such problem?

Check your init.ora (or spfile) for db_name and db_domain and see if your domain name is included in there. You might also have to take the names.default_domain out of your sqlnet.ora file.

If you're building a database for the first time, and that's where it's failing, don't specify a domain on creation (ie, leave the sid and the global db name the same)

ORA-12571 is a network error. Whenever network is heavily loaded ORACLE throws this error. This is a bug in win NT 4. Check which service pack are you using.
This bug is been succesfully corrected by MICROSOFT and service pack has been released. Try to get service pack 6a. This service pack is released after service pack 6. This service pack will get from MICROSOFT website.

I was also getting this error but everything calm.

While in a restricted area and with work-arounds available, this seems to be a usability issue with the Connection window.

Given that it would be better to save an TNS Alias connection as a TNS Alias rather than converting it to a TNS Connection Identifier (which would avoid the problem, except for people who need/want to use TNS connection identifiers instead of TNS aliases), why is it getting converted?

I apologize for not being able to test out this scenario, but we're still in the planning stages to see if we even want to purchase RAC.

Since TAF allows a SELECT statement to failover to a surviving node, but a transaction's state does not, what happens in the following scenario:

A user in Oracle Forms UPDATEs some data, has not committed, and then executes a SELECT statement against a VALID VALUES table when the node they're connected to goes down. Since a SELECT statement was in progress, is there no error message returned, and so the user thinks their application has retained it's state?

    I got this information from:

I've read a lot here in the installation forum; I've tried installing from the /install/win32/setup.exe, I've
tried different database types, running the DCA standalone after the install, and I still get this error.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

I've seen there is another thread in this forum regarding
    "ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure"
caused by ODP.NET. But it seems a dead thread. So I post this new topic.

During normal utilization of database (without shutdown and restart of DB instance) from ASP.NET pages of web application, it happens (sometimes, it is not deterministic) that execution of
    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataAdapter.Fill (that executes Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.ExecuteReader)
    raises
[OracleException: ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure]

The version of ODP.NET I'm using is 9.2.0.2.102. Is there a known bug that affects ODP.NET and causes ORA-12571?

Thank to everyone that could help me

DB:4.20:Ora-12571: Tns: Packet Writer Failure c3

    Found that thread:

    ***
ODP.NET 920401 introduced the concept of validating a connection before giving it to an application. Of course, it is expensive and should be used wisely. An excerpt from the Readme:

ODP.NET has introduced a new connection string attribute "validate connection" that should be set to true in order to validate connections coming out of the pool. By default, this property is set to false.

Note that validation causes a round trip to the database for each connection coming out of the pool, which is very expensive in terms of performance.
Therefore, this attribute should be used only if absolutely necessary.

DB:4.00:Tns : Packet Writer Failure fa

    Hi,

    I have a problem,
When I try to connect to the database (Oracle8.0.5) at the SQL*PLUS Client I am getting following error message:
    ORA-12571: TNS packet writer failure.

I ping ip address n it didn't have any errors but when I tnsping it have a same error "TNS packet writer failure".

I'm sure that no problem at my tnsname.ora n sqlnet.ora

For information, I have another client don't have this error n run very well whereas have a same network, tnsname n sqlnet.

Anyone can give me an idea? i'm really need ur help.

    Thanks in advance,

DB:4.00:Tns : Packet Writer Failure fa

It could be problem on the database side. Did you try from a different client machine to see if it's just your machine?

You could do a loopback test on the database machine to see if it's working okay.

BTW, this is the Forms forum. There might be a better forum for this kind of question.

    Aloha,

Sorry i dont get that part. I just thought that TNS names should be in "/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/" since the pre-created instance is working and its TNS name is on that .ora file. What i did is i just added the TNS name of the newly created instance and it works. We are still talking about the server database. Please enlighten me for im a newbie on linux installation of 11g R2.

Later I tried the unistall procedures and still can't get a successful installation with database. I've had a post out here for a week and I haven't gotten any response.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

There seem to be a lot of problems with DCA posted in the installation forum. Why doesn't Oracle fix it so it works right?

    Many thanks for this forum.

    Hello Oracle Gurus,

Our Oracle 9i database is hosted somewhere else and is behind the firewall. When accessing this database through TOAD, even after 2 minutes of inactivity, we get the "TNS-12571: TNS Packet writer failure" and we have to reconnect to the database again. This occurs in all of the client machines. The Oracle 9i database's firewall is open for the ip address from which we are using TOAD/SQL*Plus.

Is there any configuration that needs to be changed on the Oracle Client or server side to solve this issue? I appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Saku

    Hi,

you can set sqlnet_expire_time option in sqlnet.ora file on the database server and set the time less than 2 mins. This to identify if the problem is because of some firewall configuration or other network related issue which causes the onnection to die.

this parameter should keep all the client connection alive but results in extra trafic.

    Okay, here's an interesting conundrum:

I have a machine running XP Professional and have tried to install one of our Forms6i applications onto it. The installation creates two oracle homes, one is 8i and uses the newer networking software. The other (in which the forms runtime resides) is 8.0 and uses the net80 version.

Now for the fun part: when I try to connect to the database (Oracle 9i database -- Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Oracle Data Mining options
JServer Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production, if you want to be specific) using the SQL*Plus and TNSNAMES.ORA file in the 8i home...no prob.

BUT! If I try to connect to the EXACT SAME DATABASE using the SQL*Plus in the older 8.x home I get this error:

    ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure

I've noticed I'm not the only person who seems to be having this issue. AND I've also noticed that it seems to happen most often with XP Prof. Is this an OS compatibility issue? A net80 compatibility issue? Is there a work-around? A solution?

Any and all suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Here in our department we are getting the above problem frequently while trying to connect to the oracle database through SQL*Plus/Form/Report Builder etc. I have observed that on the client side where developer 6i is installed even we didnt perform any transaction/activity, we get the above problem!

For the solution even i have tried following but didnt work,
1- Uninstall and Reinstall all of the developer6i.
2- Removed all related registry entries and files.

The only thing which worked is to clean up all the system and to Reinstall the Operating System (windowXP).

How large is your listener.log? This error stack occurs, when listener.log has grown too large on the Windows platform. You have to delete and recreate the file, do this in regular intervals.

Yesterday I've installed Oracle 9i release 2 on my Windows 2000 pc. Everything went fine. Then I've installed OWB. Still everything was ok. Then I've installed JDeveloper and the BI Beans. After then, I was not able anymore to start the dB instance. So I've removed everything again, cleaned-up the registry and the file system, and re-installed Oracle 9i, but now I'm not even able to install an instance. I do get the error: TNS-12571 TNS:packet writer failure. And some of the time I've get an "End of communication channel" error (which is anyway one of my most favorites ;-) ) I've even tried to install an 8.1.7. instance but still no success!!The error remains!!!!! What do I have to do now? Format my disc? Buy a new computer? H E L P?

What's the characterset of your database(s)? There's a known problem between Developer level 8.0.6 and characterset AL32UTF8. Patch12 and above should help, in the worst case the database has to be rebuilt with characterset AL32UTF16.

ORA 12571 TNS Packet Writer Failure

I'm building a middleware client application (ASTA connectivity in a custom Delhi 7 server). I've got the server running on a Windows 2003 Server machine, and after the app runs for a long time (couple days seems like), I'll issue a client request and get the above error. Only feedback I get from those familiar with running the ASTA code is "Sounds like an Oracle config or install issue to me". If i just shut down the running 'server' app, restart, all is fine (no need to reboot the Windows 2003 server machine).

I've searched the Oracle archives on this one - seems like it rears up occassionally, and there may be a myriad of causes/conditions that create it.

I'm a 'naive' Oracle user - and not sure where to begin solving the issue.

As far as the config files, my .ora and .net are very 'plain' (basically what others here use to run the oracle 'forms' enviroment). ((I've included text at bottom of this message))

    One post suggested:
"Enable SQL*Net tracing to diagnose the root cause".
Can someone point me what config I should enter for this... and where the log file will reside ??

    Thanks

    Hi all,

Not sure where to post this, so trying for the general forum to start...

I have also searched and read all the forums for help on this already as well the Oracle documentation and anything I could find from several on-line searches, etc.

I have Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition and Oracle Forms 6i installed on Win2K. Everything worked fine when it was just Oracle 8i running, ie: connecting to the database in SQLPlus Worksheet, but when I try and connect to the database in the datablock wizard in forms I get the ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure error!

Don't tell me to re-install, I've done that like 6 times already. I've check the tnsnames.ora files and tried that fix already. I don't know what else to try short of fdisk and redoing everything from scratch again, but I don't have time for that as this machine is used daily for other tasks.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!!

    Thx in advance!

    DB:3.36:Tns:Packet Writer Failure mj

    Hi

    I have some problems with a TNS-12571 known as TNS:Packet writer failure on a 8i (8.1.7) installation.
The db server and developer tools is installed on the same machine and I have no problems connecting to the db with SQL*PLUS without any failure but if I try to tnsping or connect to the db through Forms (6i patch 15) I get the failure.
I have tried some off the topics in here but it doesn't seems to work.

The OS is a WIN XP prof.

The TNSNAMES.ora for the db look like this:

    ORDRE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ordre)
    )
    )

It could be a problem with the TCP/IP protocol but it seems weird because a got another PC with the same type off installation and it gives me the same problem and I havent had any other problems with the protocol.

Hope that here are some one out there who can help me. :-)

    Hi,

    I have installed Net8 and SQL*Plus from 8.0.5 on SuSE Linux 6.0.
Using SQL*Plus from Linux to a Server V7.3.4.2 on Win NT works

The connection string traced by the listener looks the same

If you weren't shutting down the database, this was probably a transient failure. If it recurs, you'll want to enable SQL*Net tracing to diagnose the root cause.

As far as shutting down the database before rebooting, if this is a production database, then you absolutely should be shutting down Oracle before rebooting. If this is a development database, it is probably less critical.

I red the log listener in subdirectory log and I see this information:

    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error

Are you actually USING Oracle Names or just TNSNAMES or host naming ? If you haven't set up Oracle Names [ it is not the default ] then it will not work.

We are using Oracle 9i Ver 9.2 on Windows platform.
Yesterday on a client running on Windows 2000 Professional, this error came: "ORA-12571 TNS packet writer failure." I looked for the solution on net found n numbers of different responses. Some one says its a spyware, someone says Oracle server has blocked this particular IP address, just restart the server it will be OK, some one says, remove the TCP/IP protocol from the client again reinstall the protocols. My problem was solved, by removing the spy.
But I want to ask, whats the real meaning of this problem what shud be the proper action to resolve this.

    Hi Gurus!

Here in our department we are getting the above problem frequently.

Which is very time taking and painfull to repeat it.

Please have a solution for this!!!

    Thanks in advance

Another possibility is spyware. We encountered that recently and ran Ad Aware to remove the spyware.

After that you may encounter another error (I can't remember which one exactly) which can be resolved by donwloading LSP-fix (http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm).

At the end of the installation, Net8 is successfully configured and then I follow the prompts for the creation of a database. It errors out during the Database Creation Process when "Initializing Database" with an ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure.

Subsequent attempts to create a new database independently of the installation procedure generate the same error.

I've tried downloading a new install zip file and installing again, with the same results.

I'm stuck and would appreciate any assistance.

    Thanks.

Did you connect to any other versions of Oracle from this same machine? I've noticed that if connecting to
multiple versions of oracle, or if using multiple oracle
products (forms, dba studio, reports) for multiple versions on the same pc, the tnsname.ora file that is used by
a product may be different than you expect.

Make sure the tnsnames.ora file that dba studio is using
has the correct entries for the database you are trying to connect to.
