I am trying to upgrade a 1750 from 8MB flash to 16 MB flash but the router only sees 8MB flash and gives the error message bad magic number (same error if the flash is broken or not formatted).

Is there an rom upgrade that may solve this or is it more likely that the flashmemory is broken?

Please paste the screen capture of the error and the "sh flash" result. Moreover, is the flash partitioned to two partitions ?

    Hi guys,

Need your help on this. Can I know, what is the maximum flash memory capacity can I upgrade on Cisco 1750 1751. I need to use minimum 32M of flash memory to upgrade my routers to IOS version 12.3 and up.

And also can I upgrade the memory to 64M? I think there is no problem with the memory upgrade, only concern about the flash upgrade. Especially for 1750 routers.

    Thanks.

I went through the Cisco tool to select the IOS I needed and installed c1700-sv3y-mz.122-27.bin so I'm now on:

from your description its clear that NAT is working but stops. This is in all probablity an issue of how the NAT tables clearance timer is set on your router. If the timer is set to never it may be hogging your memory and preventing new transaltions from being set up. Try and set the timer to clear old nat transaltion entries after say 10-12 hours.

    The relevant commands are

    ip nat translation tcp-timeout secs

    ip nat transaltion udp-timeout secs

In a 4700M does the Rxboot flash simm count towards flash memory. Explanation to follow.

I have a 4700M and want to upgrade IOS. However, I am not sure if I have enough memory. There are three slots available: one for Rxboot flash and two for flash. Currently I when I do a sh ver I see:

4096K bytes of processor board System Flash

4096K bytes of processor board Boot Flash

The boot flash has nothing in it and the IOS 12.0(3)is installed in the system flash.

If not what is the difference between boot and system flash in this particular router? I am stumped!

    DB:2.88:Cisco 4700-M+ j7

In short the answer is no.

The bootflash is there to hold a boot/failover image only, it cannot be aggregated into the system flash to allow for a larger IOS image to be installed.

You will need to purchase another 4Mb flash before you can install even the IP only featureset of 12.1. Sorry!

    Hi,

The default 877 flash of 24Mb is made up of 20 MB of onboard flash memory and a 4-MB flash memory card. You can replace the 4Mb flash card with a 32Mb Flash card to give you a total of 52 Mb of Flash. As for DRAM, the 877 has 128Mb of onboard DRAM which you can supplement with a 128Mb DIMM to give you 256Mb in total.

I need to upgrade an IOS on a Switch to

    on a Sup2/MSFC2.

    The Cisco web site recommends

    c6k222-ps-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

    Release Date: 12/Dec/2006

    IP LAN ONLY

    Size: 25878.11 KB (26499180 bytes)

Minimum Memory: DRAM:256 MB Flash:64 MB

Which DRAM does this refer to?

Is it the supervisor card or the MSFC?

When I do a show version on the Switch I see

cisco WS-C6509 (R7000) processor (revision 3.0) with 112640K/18432K bytes of memory.

    Which does this refer to?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Is this definately correct ? I am in the same position and have read on other posts that both the switching module and the msfc need upgrading ? Or is this just a recommendation not a pre-requisite for 12.2 ?

I've tried with anothers version but nothings works always the same. Anyone can tell me what exactly IOS version I need. Better If I shouldn't upgrade memory. I solved changing the codec on MC3810 since g729ar8 to g729r8. 1750 with IOS 12.1(5)T doesn't work with that codec.

Do Cisco has tools to check this kind of upgrade ? I can't use Configuration agent to treat as new configuration as Cisco 1750 is EOL.

You will have to be careful about the PVDM (Packet Voice DSP Module) requirements. The PVDMs hold DSPs that make the card fully functional. These PVDMs are installed on the motherboard within the 1750. Hello all:

I'm trying set up a firewall on my network between my LAN and an Internet connection using Cisco products. I've been trying to figure out which Firewall Feature set version I need to update my 1750 router, which is using IOS version 12.2.(5). I have a WIC-1ENET card in slot 0, and my version of IOS doesn't recognize the card, so I'm assuming I need to purchase the Firewall feature set. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how this works? I'm new to Cisco IOS and I'm not sure how the Firewall feature set interleaves/overlaps the current IOS on the router. Does the FW feature set get loaded "on top of" the IOS or do I have to reload a whole IOS version to get the Firewall set? Is the Firewall available as just an upgrade and is there a price cut involved for just the upgrade?Which version can I start with (sometimes there are older versions available at lower cost, as the FW set upgrade looks to cost about 700 dollars!) or do I have to use the latest and greatest? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info! The router in question in out of warranty about (about 18 mos old) and unfortunately, we don't have smartnet for it. The router wasn't purchased through an authorized reseller, but maybe we'll have to find one? I did find the Firewall Feature set for 1700 series routers for sale (Cisco part #: FL17-H=) at this url:

This is just one place that I found this item, but it appears you have to get the memory upgrade at the same time, and we already have max memory installed. Hmmmm...Do you think this upgrade is an add-on, or is it an IOS version complete with the FW feature set? Thanks again for your help.

Do I need to format first the new 32MB flash memory? this are the things that I'm not sure and I dont want to take a risk for the network that is already working. Aside from this is there any procedure for upgrading the SDRAM from 96MB to 128MB or I have to removed the 96MB and replaced with 128MB and reload after this. I need your advice guys ASAP.

You probably have one 64mb and one 32mb Dimm and in that case you just need to replace 32mb Dimm to 64mb.

You will need to get two 32mb simm in order to update your flash memory to 64mb.

I don't see why you will need to copy router image(other then backup) if this is only memory upgrade.

You just nee to take router down and remove the cover and install memory....

Focus on Jouni's first questions. The 64 MB flash that's built-in should be plenty. Check for old images and such on your current flash (disk0:).

A simple "dir" command will show you what's taking up your space. Anything other than the current ASA system software and ASDM (and possibly Anyconnect and plug-in images if you're using them) is not necessary to keep around. ASA 8.2 is about 15 MB. ASDM is 17-18 MB depending on the version you're using.

    DB:2.77:Remote Upgrade For Cisco 837 k9

    Hello Marc,

the 'standard' TFTP upgrade procedure will erase the flash and install the new IOS while maintaining connectivity, the connection will only be lost during the reboot. Without physical access to the router, that risk obviously remains. You could try and hook a regular PSTN telephone line up to the console port, that way, you would always be able to access the device.

Hi, Currently i need to upgrade the IOS on a 1750 router. However the IOS in question is half a meg larger than the flash mem size of the router. Even if i delete everything from the flash mem the IOS doesnt fit. I have to questions - Firstly is there anything else i can do to increase the size of the flash mem after ive already deleted files from the flash mem? And secondly another 1750 router in another site has more than double the amount of flash RAM.why is this the case?

    DB:2.75:Increasing Flash Memory Size p8

You can try the command "erase flash /no-squeeze-reserve-space", this frees 524,288 bytes of space on 2600 series routers. Not shure if it will work for your 1700 series router.

The reason for greater flash is that the other 1750 came with a later IOS release. As the features get richer the storage requirements increase.

You should have at least 16MB of flash if not 32MB nowadays.

Flash memory can be bought from Cisco or third party suppliers, do a Google on it if the above suggestion does not work.

I'm trying to set up a MS VPN behind a Cisco 1750 router. The MS Server has a local IP of 192.168.2.200 and a public address of 63.xxx.xxx.227. The router is configured to NAT all 63.xxx.xxx.227 traffic to 192.168.2.200. When I connect from another computer inside the router (IP address 192.168.2.12, for instance) the VPN works perfectly. When attempting to connect via the internet, however, the VPN server doesn't respond. Port 1723 is detected, but no connection is made. I'm guessing that this is because the 1750 must be specifically configured to route GRE to 192.168.2.200, but I've been unable to figure out how to do that.

My router is a 1750, IOS version 12.0(5)XQ, and the ROM is bootstrap version 12.0(3)T. The router has 12Mb of RAM, and 4Mb of system flash.

    I have a few questions:

    1) Will I have to upgrade the IOS to get this to work? If so, what version will I need to upgrade to?(Will I need to upgrade the RAM or flash to upgrade to the proper IOS version?)

    2) Should this be working, or did I miss something?

Many thanks, in advance, for any light you can shed on my problem!

You can’t use GRE when running port translation. PAT only supports TCP and UDP IP Protocols. You’ll need another IP address to map that server to for access on the outside.

We never recommend to have 3rd party RAM and flash on the switches. As suggested by Ankur that most of the time it will crash the switch or will not work. Moreover the same will not be supported by Ciso TAC if you face any DRAM related issue in the near future.

If you still want to give it a shot, my suggestion for you would be try arranging RAM on rental or testing basis and return it if that doesnot work. We will always recommend you run only the Cisco hardware on the boxes as the same are tested on Cisco devices and supported by the TAC.

    Hi,

Does Cisco 1750 support 2 VIC cards such as VIC2FXO and VIC2FXS?

What is the difference between Cisco 1750-2V and Cisco 1750-4V? Does it mean that the Cisco 1750-2V supports only 1 VIC card with 2 interface and the Cisco 1750-4V supports 2 VIC cards with 4 interface?

If I need 2 VIC, does it mean I need to purchase the Cisco 1750V-4V and others will not work for me?

    Thank you.

Question from one of my customers on if there is a Flash Memory upgrade option for the ACE4710 that they have.

He says he needs more memory so that he can have two images on flash at once.  From what I can find, there does not seem to be an upgrade option to increase the flash from the 1 Gig that comes with the platform.

    Any thoughts?

Firstly, you need to get the IOS with Crypto.  Go to www.cisco.com/go/fn and verify if you can run VPN with the feature set of your choice.

Next is the amount of flash.  Get a 3rd party (up to 2Gb) and test if it is "recognized" by the router.

Next, you're in the process of upgrading the IOS, might as well upgrade the bootstrap too.  Download and upgrade the bootstrap to 12.4(13r)T5 so you can boot the router via USB.

Using Cisco Certified memory certainly doesn't invalidate a warranty. My experience is that even using non-certified memory generally isn't a big deal -- they may ask you to try certified memory to see if a problem continues, but I doubt they'd void a warranty over it.

If you look at the DRAM Layout it has only one bank,

which means you have to remove the 4MB on board an

    replace it with the MEM-1X16D.

If you have to upgrade the Flash as well, there are

8MB on board. The second Flash slot is empty and you

can install an additional 8MB Flash memory MEM-1X8F.

Thats how i figure this out from the Layout.

The differnce in price happens if you pay cisco mem,

    or 3RD party product.

    Hi,

You want to free some space on your flash, is that so?

870 routers can go up to 52 MB of flash and 256 of SD RAM. Can you tell us how much you got with show ver output.

If you are 95% of flash I don't think this will impact performance as the IOS is copied into RAM at startup but if you want to implement

features needing files installed in flash you may be missing some space. The more memory you got the better and anyway some features need a lot of RAM to work.

I f you want to free space on flash then you can put IOS on tftp or ftp server and boot from there.

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if cisco 1861 CME router (aka UC500) can run c1861-advipservicesk9-mz.15+ code?

Cisco say: Minimum Memory:                                                                   DRAM:384                                                                  MB                                                               Flash:128                                                                  MB

I tried running IOS 15, but the router keeps crashing. I suspect it is because I only have 256Mb memory. There is a DRAM slot available onboard, but I could not find any information on 1861 DRAM memory upgrade.

    DB:2.64:Can Cisco 1861 Run Advipservicesk9-Mz.15x ? 1z

1861 and UC500 are similar, but not the same thing.

However, when a router is crashing, it may not a memory issue, but a software bug.

In this case, either buy a support contract and open a TAC case, or refrain from using IOS 15.x

Is there is any restriction about the max Flash memory in MB that to upgrade, and i think that PCMCIA flash memory size must be small than or equal the SIMM flash memory. right?

    DB:2.63:Flash Memory Upgrade! 93

OK, either you have 8MB of flash on 2 SIMMs and 8MB on 2 PC cards, highly unlikely, since the AMD 29F016 are SIMM modules.

Or you have only one SIMM with a total of 32MB. Only the router is showing it as 4 chips with 8MB each, this is the most likely. But again maybe you have 2 SIMMs with 16MB each.

I take it you don't have the possibility of opening the router, to have a look.

DB:2.62:1750/1751-V Gw Support For Cme 87

I've got a 1750 that has been upgraded with a PVDM. I want to upgrade the router to 128M DRAM and 32M FLASH in order to run CME, as shown here:

    http://cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps4625/prod_installation_guide09186a00805f5908.html

It says to upgrade the 1750 to 128/32 in order to support CME. However, the following documentation on the 1750 shows it can only support 48MB DRAM and 16MB FLASH:

    http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps221/products_data_sheet09186a0080092102.html

Can I actually upgrade it to 128/32 or not?

DB:2.62:1750/1751-V Gw Support For Cme 87

the maximum DRAM for a 1750 is 48mb as described in the link below:

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps221/products_data_sheet09186a0080092102.html

you would need a 1751-V, of the 1700 series, to support CME.

(or a 1760/1760-V; as described in the first link you provided in your post)

    Hi Samir,

No worries mate, I am glad I could be of help! :-)

Depends on what you want to use the router for. It is quite outdated including the IOS. To get the most out of the features available, I would say look at an ISR atleast. If you dont require too many features, then 2600 will also do.

Kindly mark this thread as answered, much appreciated.

    Hello,

    Memory:
28672K/4096K bytes of memory.32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)
The currrent IOS does not allow for SSH to the router.
I have some images for this router but they all require more memory.
I have two concerns about upgrading this router:
    1. I believe I have o upgrade both flash and dram.
    2. From the my current IOS, above, what would be the next IOS I would have to go to to get the SSH option and also SDM.

Personally, I'd recommend you get a slightly newer ISR G1 instead of trying to get the 2600 to work.  The 2600 is already very old.  You'd be hard-pressed to find more memory and DRAM.   Plus a lot of the components are starting to fail.

Quick question; I think am missing something, even after reading tons of docs:

I have a new ISR 2921 that came with IOS 15.0, and CME 7.1.  I want to upgrade to CME 8.1; Do I just upgrade the IOS to 15.1.3?  The CME admin guides says the following (below) for installing software, and I downloaded the CME 8.1 complete file site, but I don't know which file or files to copy to the routers flash?  When I look at the router's flash now, there is no mention of CME files, but CCP does see it at 7.1.

    Installing Cisco Unified CME Software

To install Cisco Unified CME in flash memory, perform the following steps.

    SUMMARY STEPS

    1. Go to Software Download site.

    2. Download archive.

    3. Extract files to be downloaded.

    4. Use the copy or archive tar command to copy file to flash memory.

    5. Use the show flash: command to list files in flash memory.

    DETAILED STEPS

    Step 1 Go to http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/ip-key.

Step 2 Select the file to download.

Step 3 Download zip file to tftp server.

Step 4 Use the zip program to extract the file to be installed, then:

    a. If the file is an individual file, use the copy command to copy the files to router flash:

    Router# copy tftp://x.x.x.x/P00307020300.sbn flash:

Given the modules you listed 96MB Memory, 32MB flash is essentially the minimum for this configuration. You have 4 spare slots, therefore you I/O memory requirement will vary depending how the slots are populated in future.

Your specification requires at least 25% I/O memory, therefore verify that configuration has memory-size iomem 25 configured. 25 percent is normally the default.

I would specifically look longterm when order you memory, given the fact that you have 4 spares slots for expansion.

That's a very old router. Upgrading won't get you a lot of value.

I believe the picture you attached is a DRAM module, not flash memory. The router operates in DRAM and boots image off of the flash SIMM.

According to the product data sheet (here) there are various memory amounts supported, depending on your exact model.

Documentation says after adding flash memory to AS5400, it should be reformatted. How do I do reformatting of flash memory (chip, not a flash card) ?

    DB:2.57:As5400 Flash Memory Upgrade 1d

Flash memory should be reformatted after adding, replacing, or removing flash memory SIMMS.

The following URL explains about replacing flash memory SIMM's

    DB:2.57:Cisco 3800 Router Flash Upgrade 73

I need to upgrade compact flash memory card for a 3800 router. Basically i want to upgrade code on this router and the current flash size (64Mb)  cannot hold new image. I wanted to check if i swap the old flash (64 Mb) with a new one 256 mb, i will loose vlan.dat file since it's stored in flash. Is there a way i can copy vlan.dat to new flash which has new code before i change the boot statements and reload the router?

    DB:2.57:Cisco 3800 Router Flash Upgrade 73

    Hello Sachin,

if you have a vlan.dat file it is because you have an etherswitch module installed in the router.

You can upload the file using

    copy flash tftp:

to a PC running  TFTP server for later download to the new flash using copy tftp: flash command

Or if you have another network device like a LAN switch that speaks VTP with the etherswitch module on a trunk port, you can make it a VTP server so that it will save a vlan.dat into its flash. Later the etherswitch will be able to retrieve the vlan.dat file from the external LAN switch.

You can check with dir /all all the filesystems that are on the router, the etherswitch module might have an internal bootflash in that case it might be used to copy the vlan.dat and to retrieve it later.

    Hope to help

    DB:2.57:Rom Upgrade 2501 2509 az

    Gang,

I am pretty sure you shouldn't have to touch the ROMS to get 12.x to load and run on those routers you printed information on. I think you could test this by upgrading the ram to 16Mb and booting your newer IOS from TFTP without committing to flashing a newer IOS.

I have had the experience of needing to upgrade the 2500 roms to load 12.x, but I believe they were really old (like version 3 boot code), and the router itself had IOS version 9 in the flash. That's pretty old.

For a training lab I would not bother with upgrading the ROMS at all, as long as they're new enough to boot 12.1 or 12.2 or 12.3 from flash.

Plus, there's some risk: if you break one of the two PLCC sockets that hold the ROMs, you will make the router unusable - no boot ROMs = no work at all. And you need more than just the upgrades because you need a PLCC extraction tool - a screwdriver or two won't do the job.

DB:2.57:Flash Hardware Upgrade (Cisco 2501 Router) pf

I need to upgrade my Flash memory in order to accomodate the latest IOS (12.3)for my Cisco 2501 router. I purchased 2-8 MB Flash memory. I installed the 2 Flash memory sticks but it's showing 2 partitions (1 2), how can I combine these 2 partition to make 1 single partition with 16 MB total. Thank you in advance and I really appreciate your help.

DB:2.57:Flash Hardware Upgrade (Cisco 2501 Router) pf

    Hi

Erase the flash then enter the command

    partition flash 1

which will create a single flash memory partition.

Hi.. i would like to know whether is there any option to upgrade the DRAM Flash memory for UC520? i can't locate any part number and form Cisco configuration tools. If we increase the user license or introduce more MOH song, do we need to upgrade the DRAM flash memory? by the way, can wew use 3rd party compact flash for UC520?

appreciate that someone can share his experience with me. thanks.

We do not support DMVPN with CCA MSM. Check out smart designs cisco.com/go/smartdesigns and CCA admin guide for reference architectures of both designs. SR520 is a supported Teleworker Router, yes.
