    Hi guys.

    DB:4.27:Question About Xps M1710 Memory 8m

It depends if you're looking to transfer the RAM over to the M1730: rather than running 667Mhz(which is found in both) it would be better to get yourself some PC-6400 running at 800Mhz, since its FSB runs at 800Mhz, the M1730 can handle it fully and the cost of memory has hit rock-bottom, this would improve its speed. artistar

I recently received my XPS 700. I now find out the bios is very limited for changing things. I also find out that VT is not supported in the 700 and that the memory does not support 800 mhz. My question is, should I return it and replace it with the XPS 410?

    DB:4.27:Xps 700 To Xps 410, Should I Exchange? dc

I don't know what the big deal over 800MHz is all about. It will NOT make much of a performance difference with the Core2 CPU, which doesn't need the extra bandwidth. It's like a nine-lane freeway with little traffic. You'll get where you're going just as fast as if it had 20 lanes. The best feature of the XPS 700 is its SLI capability. It's also more versatile as you can upgrade more components. I don't care for the funky design, and I've read about the problems in that area. Still, it's a better computer overall. I'm not a lover of SLI. IMO, it's a waste of money. If you already have a high-end card, you can play any game out there without a problem.

I have an XPS 720 with 2 GB RAM.
According to the order it is: 311-7248 2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800-MHz
And it istwo 1GB modules as verified by looking inside the case (two memory slots taken, two memory slots free).

I want to upgrade from 2 GB to 4 GB.

When I seelct XPS 720 on Dell web site only 667 MHz RAM is shown (1GB and 2GB)
Same result if I use the Service tag.

    Manual says:
NOTICE: Do not install ECC memory modules.
    If you install mixed pairs of PC2-5300 (DDR2 667-MHz) and PC2-6400 (DDR2 800-MHz) memory,
the modules function at the speed of the slowest module installed.

Seems like a waste to get 667-MHz now when I have 800-MHz.

As far as I can tell there are compatible 1GB 800-MHz modules on the Dell web site, such as this one (which I would need two of):
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Memory_Upgrades/productdetail.aspx?c=usl=ens=dhscs=19sku=A2129723

Seems like it should work in my XPS 720 even though it is specified to be for Dell OptiPlex FX160 as it is:
    Technology DDR2 SDRAM
    Form Factor DIMM 240-pin
Just like the modules that is listed to support XPS 720.

    Any suggestions on this questuion?

    Thanks,
    Kristoffer

It's difficult to say. It looks as if you got cheated. You have two sets of 2 to fulfill your dual channel configuration, instead of two sets of three. So, you may have to purchase two 3 piece sets to increase your memory and still keep your dual channel capabilities. Dell may help you with the upgrade, however, after having to deal with their customer service every day for the last two weeks, I'll bet your on your own. Their service has really gone down hill. Therefore, I'd suggest you upgrade through Crucial and order two 3 piece kits to maximize your pc.

Connect an external monitor (if available) to the laptop and check if the screen of the external display does the same thing.

    CD60,

Thanks, but the memory in your links is 1066mhz speed, I'm looking for the 800mhz Dominator memory that Dell installs.

I know you said not to worry about the speed and that the memory will revert to 800mhz, but I have heard that if you put 1066mhz memory in a system designed for 800mhz, the memory will actually run slower due to slower timings.

I'm starting to think that Dell is using some special OEM memory designed by Corsair that you can only get from Dell because I cannot find 800mhz Dominator memory anywhere.

No problem. I actually had not heard that before, not saying it isn't true. But keep in mind you will be able to overclock that memory easily (that's what it's made for). Anyway just trying to save you some money. And I can tell you that it's not slowing my system any. It outright flies :smileywink:

You might look into getting 1 bank of 2Gb and another bank of 1Gb, totaling 3Gb for the two RAM slot in your XPS 2010! I just upgraded mine from 2Gb to 4Gb because the memories were on sale from Frys. Then, I discovered that Vista 32 bit operating system would never see all 4Gb!!! The most I got was 3+ Gb with the rest wasted. If you are running or thinking of running 64 bit Vista, you might be able to recover a little more of the memory but still no where near the complete 4Gb! Query online and you would find lots of answers concerning the memory limitation!

Get some high performance ddr2-667 ram. OCZ gold ddr2-667 4-4-4-12 is some good stuff!, and it's cheap compared to the ddr800 or 1000 stuff. As a plus, it will actually run in the dell. I have OCZ gold ddr2-800, if you read in other threads, which will not run at all in the dell. You will benefit from being able to run the 4-4-4-12 timings, and you can even turn the timings lower than that using ntune, just read some reviews on the ram to read what its stable timings/voltage levels are, or experiment youreslf.

Q: What is the difference between the XPS M1530 and the Inspiron 1520 (the assumption is that I take them both with the same processor, memory, hard disc etc.)?

DB:3.29:Please Assist With This Customers Pre-Sales Question. 79

When I looked at the Dell site, they list the Inspiron 1525...the bottom half being based on the M1530 and the top half from the i1520.

The i1525 seems to come with 4 USB ports (M1530 has 3), a builtin modem (the M1530 has none), has Intel X3100 graphics (M1530 can have the 8400GS or 8600GT with dedicated graphics memory), more easily swapable optical drive (M1530 has a slot load).

If you're a gamer, you want the XPS over the Inspiron

The M1530 has a fingerprint scanner, has access to the T9x00 processors in build, has access to the 1680x1050 LCD (Mi1525 had max of 1440x900 when I last checked)

The M1530 also comes with extras like Photoshop Elements + Premiere Elements ($120 extra for the i1525), a sleeve to carry the laptop, a binder to hold manual and disks, screen cloth, Dell Travel remote ($14 for the i1525) and creative noise canceling headphones.

ASlso, the M1530 LCD has the barrel hinges as opposed to the standard ones on the Inspiron.

If you don't want the flashiness of the XPS and want the 3D videocard option, you can also go for the Vostro 1500 (but no HDMI)

Just looked again. I see the i1520:(

Does have option for 1680x1050 screen, processor offered maxed @T8300 (T9500 w/M1530), still only comes with X3100 graphics

    i1520 starts @6.4lbs
    i1525 starts @5.9lbs

SuperFetch watches what you do, basically, and then preloads those applications that you use most often (along with certain OS files that are likely to be used). That means that at each start, you should see memory utilization at a fairly low level, but then it will increase as SuperFetch loads files. To my knowledge, there's no reason to assume that SuperFetch is finished fetching before you get a chance to check memory utilization.

Is it really worth $100 more, or does it make too little a difference to consider without moving to the 4GB option?

If anyone is interested in this memory and you buy it, just remember to set the voltage of your new ram with the old ram still in there, then save to BIOS/CMOS and exit, and put the new ram in, that way it will boot and u can change timings and all that, as it defaults to 1.5V and won't boot, you'll get a error followed by a beep.

It is clear to me that Windows Vista SP1 it doesn't fix its own inefficient memory ram managment, so it is reporing 2.5Gb of free memory on my 4GB ram XPS system.

Here is my question: if I add a new graphic card (of 512MB) taking advantage of the SLI feature, will Windows Vista reduce my already low 2.5GB free ram to 2.0GB? Has somebody this issue like this also?

I will appreciate your opinion on this guys because this same memory behavior has being seen on Vista 64bits version.

Thanks for your feedback on this annoying issue.

What version of vista did you get? Dell's new policy will only give you a 64 bit disk with either business or ultimate versions.. any others you are on your own

The stock option is 2x1gb of Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz.

    I plan on buying another 2x1gb of PC2-5300 DDR2 at 667MHz.

Is that the same thing? When shopping for memory, I never see that listed. Also, is the ram that dell uses in the XPS 710 PC2-5300?

DB:3.20:Drivers For The Bram At Xps pz

    Hello everybody,

I am new using xps 9.1i and I am a little puzzled with it. I am trying to use the Spartan3 board for a very simple test, just adding a bram with dlmb and ilmb controllers, which is provided by default in the installation of xps ip catalog.

I add the bram, do the connection (portA to instructions and porb to data) and I try to update the libraries. But at that point I am not able to find the drivers for the controllers, so I don't know how to access the memory that I just included.

What am I doing wrong? How should I write/read the memory from the c project?

Thanks in advance for taking some time about this question,

    Regards,

    Elena

I solved the problem by configuring the BRAM controller to single port! The datasheet says that when two port configuration is used, one is used as a read port, the other as write port. Since one of the port was floating/not connected, the read was thus Zero value every time.

Pardon me, I forgot to post it after I solved it.

i installed it myself, in the uwb slot.  you have three slots, one is for wifi, one is for broadband card, ie sprint, the uwb slot is where you will put the cache card.  You have to use either the 512mb or 1 gb card.  the newer cards are made for the newer chipsets.  You have to make sure it is enabled in bios. You have to install the two driver packages from dell support.  then you run the intel program and enable ready boost. people said i didnt need it with 4 gb of ram, but it is fast cache and made by intel for the chipset that is your computer,  it can only be used with vista.  my 64 bit vista ultimate, utilizes all my ram and my cache.  you may not see any improvement until the computer has been used and rebooted a few times.  vista remembers what programs you use, and uses the cache for frequently used programs.  to me it was cheap upgrade and i dont like empty slots in my computer.

I noticed that 2GB of ram are $85 per module so I can get 2 matching modules for my $200. I know that vista 32 bit will only recognize 3.25 or 3.5 GB of the ram (am I correct)? My question is will the additional memory not recognized by Vista be utilized by the video accelerator or will the XPS not use any of the unused memory?

you would need 2 of the same memory sticks e.g. 2* 2GB memroy sticks = 4GB as the XPS only has 2 dimm slots, which would give you 3.25GB RAM in a 32 bit OS. I would suggest the RAM upgrade as Vista is RAM hungry and the extra 1GB will definately help.

I am fairly sure that when i researched it you have to use 2 of the same size RAM sticks. You cannot use a 1GB and a 2GB to make 3GB, best to confirm with Dell tech support or google it.
You don't need to use the same size memory modules. The 3 gig option for the m1330 is 1GB + 2GB, and I have it. The Intel motherboard in the m1330 has a proprietary feature that lets you gain a portion of the benefit of dual channel memory when not using identical modules. There's a thread about it somewhere but I'll give you the pertinent info about 3GB of ram. If you imagine full dual channel usage as 100%, 3GB in this 1+2 configuration gives you 60% of that benefit.

4GB has a few benefits. 1) Full dual channel. Though it's not 4GB in 32-bit, you're still gaining more benefit than using 3GB in the quasi-dual state. 2) And even though you can't get all of that last 1GB, you'll still have more than 3GB, and your video card will end up taking some of that extra ram instead of cutting into just 3GB. 3) Vista likes ram. If you want to use the OS, the more ram, the better. Might as well max out if you have the opportunity. I think my gift cards are going towards a printer :smileyhappy:

If your ram modules are not identical then you will not get dual channel (you are not getting this now anyway due to the 2 diffrent DIMM capacities).
If the Latency or speed is different on the two Dimms then it will run at the lowest frequency of the two.
Not sure how exactly the difference in latency works but I highly recommend not mix and matching latency. Try to get ram with the same CL.

Buying from Dell will ensure the ram is covered under Dells Warranty but buying from a 3rd party will save you money and you will still get warranty on the ram from the 3rd party but nothing will be covering you if your ram damages your laptop (unlikely).

DB:3.14:Xps 410 Doesn't Support Corsair Xms Memory? cj

Back when I first bought my XPS 410 (October 2006) I was told by Dell that the XPS systems were meant to be good gaming PC's.  I asked questions about buying memory online and was told that this system would take everything up to PC2-6400 modules.

Well here's one little thing that Dell doesn't tell you. This PC will only take PC2-6400 modules that run at 1.8v.  If you have gaming memory from makes like Corsair that run at 1.9v then it can cause your system to become unstable and can damage the memory modules.

The reason behind this being that Dell have locked the motherboards on the XPS 410 to only supply 1.8v to the memory.  Doing this means that you cannot use anything other than very specific sticks of memory.

In fact to buy a compliant stick of Corsair memory that has the same specs as the XMS2 sticks you have to purchase them ONLY at Best Buy, and the sticks will set you back almost 4x what you would pay almost anywhere else.

Also Corsair will tell you that they will not replace your sticks under warranty as you ran them on a non-supported system.

So I guess my big question is would Dell please code a BIOS for the XPS 410 (after all this is supposed to be an XPS system right?) that would allow the usage of other voltages (or auto-sensing the voltages) to make the system far more compatible?

Otherwise this system becomes even more of a lemon for me :(

Yes four 1 gig 8500 Crucial Ballistic sticks.  I went from 5.5 on the windows score with 800mhz Super talent to 5.9 with the Crucial.  I think my 3dmark score went up some as well, however I can't remember the scores now.

Does the XPS 700 take a perfomance hit when you place 2 gigs of ram in DIMM slot 1-2 then 512 sticks in DIMM slot 3-4 totaling 3 gigs or is it better performance if you just put in 2 gigs in DIMM slot 1-2 leaving 3 and 4 open. I know windows XP only reads 2 gigs max but thats not my question. Does having all FOUR dimm slots full faster than just having 1 and 2 full of memory? thanks for any answers.

I use it in my XPS Generation 4 and realy love the performance boost, I have been using Crucial memory for years now and have only had one stick go bad and it was a piece of cake to have crucial replace it under the life-time warranty and their tech support is great to work with.

DB:3.10:Question Regarding Xps Central Dma 8m

    Hi all

I have few questions about xps Central DMA

Can we use xps centeral DMA as stanalone DMA

is this DMA part of xps bus system (i.e arbiter, mux etc)

How can I add DMA controller in ise project (without processor support)

    Regards

DB:3.10:Question Regarding Xps Central Dma 8m

The XPS Central DMA controller is designed to copy data from two memory-mapped peripherals on PLBs. Therefore, in order to use it you need at least one PLB in your design. It's really not designed to work without a processor, and you will probably spend more time designing custom hardware to to program the controller through the PLB control port, than you would just writing your own DMA controller.

If you want your custom logic to access external memory without a processsor in the FPGA, you should use the MIG's FIFO interface. You may even be able to use an MPMC without a processor, if you require multiplexing the memory interface among multiple peripherals. I have never tried this before though.

    DB:3.09:Dell Xps M1330 Ram Upgrade j3

I am looking to increase the amount of RAM from 2 to 4GB on my 32windows system.

    Details are:

    Maximum Memory Capacity:8192MBCurrently Installed Memory:2GBAvailable Memory Slots:0Total Memory Slots:2Dual Channel Support: YesCPU Manufacturer:GenuineIntelCPU Family:Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00GHzModel 15, Stepping 13CPU Speed:2000 MHz

The memory suggested gives 2 different options:

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.

These come with different operating speeds. DDR2-667 and DDR2-800.

My question is....As each cost exactly the same is there any advantage of getting the 6400 DDR2-800 and will my machine operate it at the 800 speed?

    Thanks Mark.

    DB:3.09:Dell Xps M1330 Ram Upgrade j3

    Hi Mark,

The speed the memory runs atis determined by the Front Side Bus (FSB) speed of your system. Since they are both the same price, you could go for the faster one as you will in effect be future-proofing since you may be able to use the faster speed in other systems should you upgrade again.

As your system is dual channel, best performance comes from using matched pairs so it would be best toremove the originals and replace with 2x 2GB of PC2-6400 (800MHz). Depending on the FSB, it will potentially run at the faster speed. The system's performance will improve anyway regardless of speed as you have more megabytes of memory.

Please also remember that your 32-bit operating system is limited to 3-3.5GB although more may be installed.

Q: I have a quick question about the XPS 720 Red system w/ Vista. Namely the question goes about components. My question is why the 720 Red for a high end gaming computer does NOT have the same options that a lower end, namely the xps 420 has? Specifically in the CPU and memory areas. I'd like to use a Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 listed on the XPS 420 for 50 bucks more instead of the only offerend E6850 that the 720 Red offers for the same price of 50 bucks more vs the Q6600. For the memory area, the XPS 720 RED w/vista has NO option for 4GB of regular (non-OCed) ram, yet the XP version does. So I guess my question would be, if I requested this, would Dell allow it? Considering these are not specifically listed as options for the XPS 720 Red? If its a hardware (motherboard probably) problem that doesnt allow the high end system to use a high end CPU, id understand, but it preplexes me as to why a E8500 isnt offerend for the XPS 720, but is for the lower end XPS 420. I'd assume if it is possible, that would mean I'd have to do a purchase via phone instead of online. Because this is a deal breaker for me if it cant be done. I really want a E8500 CPU and 4GB normal ram with my XPS 720 RED.

    Yes thanks Senthil S,

I found that and several other XLSvideos on the Tube last night.

The slots lie down so you cant see them as you do on a desktop. The top slot (empty) on my XLS is alread angled up slightly to receive a module, so I just pressed it in, then pushed the inserted module down until the module clips clicked in.

Thats it, 8GB, enough to run my audio mixer software without any stuttering or glitches ;)
