DB:3.69:Microsoft Vista Updates Not Updating px

Okay, Microsoft is telling me I need updates and then I go to updates and try to run them. When I do, it just says that it is preparing for them and then never does anything. It can go on for hours and just sits there never updating. Never had this happen
    before.

DB:3.69:Microsoft Vista Updates Not Updating px

Do you get any errors related to updates?
    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
    2. In the left pane, click View update history.
    3. Find an update for Windows that has failed to install, and then double-click the update to view more information.
Updates that have failed to install will display Failed under Status, next to the update name.
    4. In the Windows Update dialog box, next to Error details, review the error code for the failed update.

    5. Either follow the links in the Windows Update dialog box under More Information or Help and Support to try to fix the problem, and then try installing updates again by using Windows Update in Control Panel or post back with the error code so perhaps someone
may be able to assist further.

    1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator)

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
    Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop.

    2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

If no files that start with “tmp” exist in this folder, do not remove any other files. The .cat files in this folder are necessary for installing hotfixes and service packs.

Important: Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated if the Catroot folder is renamed.

Everytime I turn on my computer (Windows Vista OS) the Microsoft Security Essentials will, after a short period, automatically begin downloading virus updates, where it gets to about 97% and then never finishes. There is a constant "downloading"

It has done this ever since the first time I manually requested updates, and never shuts off. Is there a way to make this stop?

I find it does the same thing on my ‘slowish’ XP machine but it’s much faster on the newer computers. I tend to run the database update as soon as I switch on and then disappear for a few minutes. In other ways, MSE is less obtrusive than other AV programs.

    Original Title: Window Updater Problem
Alright, so my Windows Updater obviously isn't working. I've attempted to install the updates repeatedly (I've even check the recent history- shows both updates being installed every time I've tried over the last few days). I restart my computer every time
they finished. But once I open it back up, it tells me I still need to download them. I've looked at the top problems on the Microsoft site and none of them help. Also, there is NO error message. The updates are simply not actually updating.

    DB:3.22:Windows Updates Repeats zd

    Hi,

If the installation was successful and is being offered repeatedly, you can uninstall the update and follow the Knowledge Base Article mentioned below.

Step 1: To uninstall the update refer the below mentioned link.

    Remove an update
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Remove-an-update

Step 2: Now follow steps from the below mentioned article and check for the issue.

Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339

Note: If any infections are detected during the scan, there might be a chance of data loss as the infected files will be deleted.

    Hope it helps.

According to http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/b/4/0b4ef285-2dbe-4876-89cc-81700e8e1a6a/wsspatch_management.docit appears that Microsoft recommends updating the PowerVault 745n (running Windows Storage Server 2003) with all critical patches, security patches, security roll-ups, and service packs (not hardware updates or windows updates unless specified by the OEM, i.e. Dell) through the windows update web site. Is this what Dell is recommending as well?? TIA

    I have 6 machines.

What i have noticed is that when i go to the Windows Updates page, it diverts to Microsoft Updates, but only on the 3 machines not Updating. -
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

All the machines which have updated fine stay on Windows Updates, receive the list of updates required, and update. -

The 3 machines not working that divert to Microsoft Updates page try to download the updates forever untill the Automatic Updates services is stopped and disabled. SVCHost.exe increasingly hogs CPU and Memory and WUauclt.exe increasingly hogs
all the Memuntil the system is non-responsive andthe service is stopped.
I've tried renamingDataStore.edb, deleting the\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, deleting the WINDOWS\Prefetch folder
None of which seemed to do a thing.

The issue does only seem to happen on machines trying to access Microsoft Updates rather than Windows updates.

A friend asked me torepair a ThinkPad T23 which I found to have a defective hard drive. After installing a new hard drive and XP SP2, I proceeded to update the drivers and then do a windows update to SP2. No problems. After updating to SP3, no other optional updates would install. I also had problems with the display settings and several other drivers. In addition, I received an error messagethat I did not have administrator rights to even change the display settings. After some research, I reinstalled SP2 and when I did the windows updates(updates toSP2 first) I also installed Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0. This is an optional software update, so you cannot select the express method of updating. I then proceeded to install SP3 and it worked fine.Hope this may help others avoidany hassle of installing SP3.

    DB:3.19:Updating To Sp3 xc

Hi folks,Just to clear things up for those following up on this thread in the future...SP3 installation may at times cause a conflict with IE7 which will render the browser useless - keep in mind that Microsoft linked their browser with the operating system with core OS files. "Windows Update" also uses critical components shared with Internet Explorer. Installing SP3 will, under certain circumstances, break those critical components without properly updating IE7 which in turn causes Windows Update to completely cease functioning, hence no more updates - not even manual attempts at connecting using "Windows Update" will work.... It's a known issue with SP3 as it conflicts with IE7 installed in certain circumstances.Furthermore, should a system using XP-Sp2 with IE6 installed, be updated to SP3 and then install/updated with IE7 - you're in trouble 100% of the time. IE7 will not connect to the internet (although any other browser will) and "Windows Update" will be affected as well (as descibed above). Uninstalling IE7 is not an option either, because, according to Microsoft, installing IE7 after a SP3 install will integrate IE7 into the operating system permanently without option of uninstalling. Updating IE7 with IE8Beta will not correct the issue either. As of this time, Microsoft has no solution for this "issue". - Turning on the "Automatic Updates" service is the only work-around to keep the system updated. However, should a user install IE7 with all updates PRIOR to installing SP3 and should the Windows Update not work, IE7 can always be uninstalled safely as an option and thus the user may revert to IE6 and thus may regain "Windows Update" functionality - i.e. IE7 is not be imbedded into the OS if installed over IE6 before update to SP3.Hope this sheds some light on the issues.Message Edited by icantux on 06-10-2008 11:06 AM

DB:3.12:New Xp System And Already It Wants Updates? 9c

Critical updates should be installed as soon as possible.

Optional software updates (like NET or Outlook Express updates, etc) should be installed if you need them for programs or if they enhance programs you already use.

Driver updates should be installed if you are sure they are newer than what you currently have or if you are having problems -- you can't always tell by the date on windows update either. It's really best to only grab driver updates from MS as a last restore. For instance, MS keeps trying to push an intel network driver on me from last year when my current ones are from 2 months ago.

    Hi mcculleymike,

Welcome to Microsoft Community forum. We understand that you don't want your SkyDrive to always run in the background since it causes your PC to slow down.

What I would suggest is to unlink your SkyDrive account from the client in order for it to stop the updated and new files to sync automatically and if you need to use your SkyDrive, that's the time you'll sign in again.

You may also opt to just exit from your SkyDrive then open it again if needed. You may refer to the steps below on how:

    1. On the system tray (found on the right side of your screen), right click SkyDrive (cloud icon).

    2. Click Exit then click Close SkyDrive.

To reconnect, simply open Microsoft SkyDrive again on your desktop.

Hope this helps. Should you have other queries, I highly encourage you to post them here.

DB:3.10:Microsoft Office Deleted After Erasing Windows 8 Updates mc

    Hi Liliana,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand how it feels to know that one of the software on the computer was removed following deletion of updates for the operating system. I would be helping you with this issue.

In order to resolve this issue, we would have to reinstall Office 2013 on your computer. However, since you already had installed and were working with Office 2013 earlier, there might still be some remnants of the old installation on your computer. So,
we would have to remove those remnants before we reinstall Office 2013.

Login to your Microsoft Account with your Microsoft Account Credentials and check if your Office 2013 edition reflects on the My Account page. The URL for the Microsoft Account webpage is:
http://office.com/myaccount. Microsoft account credentials would be your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com or Live.com email account which you have used for the Office 2013 purchase registration.

If your My Account page reflects your version of Office 2013, then follow these steps to remove the current remnants (please follow this step even if you do not have Office 2013 currently installed on your computer or did not have it installed earlier) of
    Office and install Office 2013.

In order to uninstall Office remnants from your computer, you will have to install and run the Office 2013 FIXIT tool.
Download / Install and run the Office 2013 FIXIT tool from the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501
Once you have completed running the FIXIT follow these steps to delete the
    Office 15 folders.

From Windows Explorer please navigate to the following location: C:\Propgram Files\ or
C:\Program Files (x86)\ Make sure to delete the Microsoft Office 15 folder. In case you not are able to delete the folder then right-click on it and click on
Rename. Rename the folder as Microsoft Office 15 old.
Ignore these steps in case you are not able to find the Microsoft Office 15 folder in the above mentioned location or if you are not able to delete or rename the
Microsoft Office 15 folder.Once you have completed running the FIXIT and deleted/renamed the Office 15 folder be sure to restart your computer.
Now try logging into the My Account page and install Office 2013.
Check if you were able to download and install Office 2013 successfully. Once this is completed check if Office 2013 prompts you for activation. If yes, proceed with the steps on screen and activate Office 2013.

In case the above steps do not work then please follow the steps from this link to perform general troubleshooting for Office 2013 / 365.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2822317

Please try the above steps and let us know if you need further assistance.

If the fixit didn't work, the article mentions ...........................

If that didn't work, try the following steps.
Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for
Windows Update to run at its next scheduled time.
For more information about Internet connection problems, see
Why can’t I connect to the Internet?
If you still receive this error after checking your Internet connection, it might mean that a program running on your computer is preventing
Windows Update Services from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, antispyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs, or proxy servers.
For steps you can take to fix this problem, see this
article about connection-related update errors on the Microsoft website.

DB:3.09:Windows Could Not Install Important Updates 99

I got this classically enigmatic (for Redmond) error message last night and I am trying to figure out what it means:
"Windows could not install important updates. Your computer was restarted to finish installing updates. Check here to see how to fix this problem and install new updates."
Well, I was busy and did not "check here" so I have no idea what "this problem" might be. (My Inner Grammarian wonders if this means I only gotunimportant updates!) Any suggestions?

P.S.: I know that there is a way to keep Microsoft from automatically updating my computer so I can decide for myself which updates are fine and which are screwed up. Unfortunately I have no capacity to judge them, so I feel pretty much stuck.

DB:3.09:Windows Could Not Install Important Updates 99

This worked for me - KB982018 needs to be installed last, separately from the others.

Thank you sooooo much for this brilliant advice. I struggled last week, and spent hours trying different things - in the end, for a few days I just hid the updates. But today, I used your suggestion, and updates all installed successfully.

I am wondering if there are limitations with updating images in Configuration Manager 2012. I have an image that, as is, will have 16 updates to install after the imaging process is complete. If I update the image in Configuration Manager using the Schedule
Updates tool, it appears to update the image with the selected updates, However, when the image is pushed out using the updates .wim file, there are still 5 updates to be deployed. The updates are:

    KB2656368 .net security update
    KB2656405 .net security update
    KB890830 Microsoft Malicious removal tool

Whats the real issue ? Do you see an availability or not ? Availability depends on Product Code / Region. Also, Network locked devices can get update only after an approval from the Operator. Hence, even if an update is released by Nokia , it need not be for your specific device. You need to wait and keep on checking.

Your ONLY chance under these circumstances is to ask your local Nokia Care wheher they can update your phone ..

    Hi,

I would suggest you to try the following methods
    Method 1:
Try to run the Windows update troubleshooter
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

    Method 2:
Download and install the updates manually and check the status.
You can download the updates from the below mentioned link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx

Check which updates are failing. How to check update history?
    a) Click the ‘Start’ button then ‘All Programs’ and then click ‘Windows Update’
    b) In the left pane click on ‘View update history’.
    c) Check for which update is failing in the list

    Hi Kelly,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community Forums.

As per the description, you are facing issues installing updates. I'll surely help you.

    1. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

    3. What is the name or KB article of the update that is failing?

I have provided methods to fix the windows update issue. Please follow each method carefully. If one method doesn't work, proceed with the next methods to resolve the issue.

Method 1: Run the fixit available in the link below to reset windows update components.

Note 3: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to
install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    You can also try:-

    settings - regional settings

Change your country to something else (ideally another English speaking country) and then press the "restart" button when prompted.

For me, the Bing lock screen changed to something else immediately after the phone restarted.

Change your country back again and then don't touch the lock screen/regional settings again for another 24 hours.

I have no idea if this will kick-start your updates or not, but changing my country did change my Bing lock screen, so it's worth a shot.

Open Windows Update, holding down CTRL, select all updates that you want to install, copy paste to notepad.
    Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/security.aspx?q=security+update , enter the update #(KB....) into the Being powered search box, choose one for your OS and download. They come as self installing packages, so later you just have to navigate to where
they're downloaded and double click them.
The drawback is, that you have to do it one by one.

I'm having trouble installing 2 updates! One is Windows KB940157 and the other is Microsoft KB 2742597. I've tried installing each of them multiple times over and it's just not happening. Does someone have advise as to how I can successfully install
these so I can finish updating?

    DB:3.02:I Cant Install Updates Kb940157 And Kb2742597...Help 1m

    Geethu B,

Thanks for providing info for me on these issues! I'm still in a rut however. I ran the fixit and tried the automatic installations again, but no change occured. I then went through the process of running a clean boot and trying the updates manually
with still no better luck. I referenced the article on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 and no relevant info was listed for the circumstances of my update problem. The only thing I didn't try was to modify the registry. I'm hoping there may be another way around this before I resort to that method and
risk creating the serious problems you mentioned if it is not done correctly.
To be more specific, these updates are for Windows XP Professional.

Here's a specific breakdown of what occurs for each update:

First off for automatic updating, this prompt comes up for both:
The following updates were not installed:
(both 2742597 and 940157 are listed)
*a quick note: when Microsoft Update identifies these available updates, the details of each one is shown as

    Total: 1 updates, 0KB, 0 minutes*
    (*Downloaded; ready to install)

    2742597 (manual):
I did successfully install the prerequisite (Windows Installer 3.1) but when I tried to install the update itself, this prompt came up:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'netfix.msi' in the box below.

Now in this source box within the prompt, 2 options were listed. The fist was C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\ and the second was Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 (Disk 1)

After clicking on OK multiple times on each nothing happens and the same prompt (as described above) remains. When I clicked on "Cancel" to get out of the prompt and stop the installation, this prompt came up:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1. The Windows installer cannot continue.

    940157 (manual):
For the x64-based Windows XP package this prompt came up:
Extraction Failed: update\wdssetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application

For the 32 Bit based XP package this prompt came up:
Setup Error: Windows Search 4.0 could not be installed on this system.
The uninstallation of a previous version of Windows Desktop Search has failed.

*When I went into Add/Remove Programs I was able to locate WDS 3.01 but when I clicked on Remove, this prompt came up:
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

So it wouldn't let me remove it.

That is pretty much as specific as I can get with each update. With that said, would you know of any other methods or have any other info on how to remedy the situation furthermore?

First, the WUAgent was v7.0 -- which hasn't been the current version of the WUAgent since Summer, 2008 -- which gives us a really good idea of when the last time this client might have been updated. (The only way to get the v7.0 WUAgent, as I recall, was
to update a client via WU/MU or WSUS sometime between the release of WSUS3 in 2007 and the release of the v7.1 WUAgent in Summer 2008.)

    2012-09-0809:33:10:858112021cAU # Target group:
    All Computers;unassigned Computers
But the critical flaw here is the attempt to use Client-Side Targeting to assign this client to the TWO groups you CANNOT assign a computer to:

If it is your intent to use client-side targeting, then please create a user-defined group on the WSUS server and assign this computer to the USER-DEFINED group by updating the GPO with the correct user-defined group name.If it is your intent to use server-side targeting and move the computer from the Unassigned Computers group to whatever group(s) you desire, then you'll need to DISABLE the Client-Side Targeting option in the GPO.
So, to the subject line of the post Windows Updates are not downloading through ... WSUS ... -- this is because you have improperly configured the client by specifying invalid target group names in your GPO.
As to the claim in the original post -- ...its redirect to another microsoft support URL... -- I suspect that is an invalid conclusion based on insufficient evidence, as there is no evidence that this client is improperly talking to anything.
It is communicating with the assigned WSUS server at 172.16.101.31 -- and finding no applicable/available updates because of the misconfigured client-side target group assignments.Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA, MCSA

    What operating system?
    Prior Security Software?
    Any security software still installed?
A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

DB:3.01:Updating Problems Via Mse Update pj

As I know MSE updates it's malware definitions everyday approx. 3 days everyday. Now I checked for updates via Microsoft Update it says no updates avalaible. I also checked updates via MSE still same it's says Up-to-date.

DB:3.01:Updating Problems Via Mse Update pj

I do not think that there is a problem.
I just did a manual update and it is now at 1.121.1179.0
I think that there is a timing issue between the portal documentation, the servers and end users.

DB:3.01:Mse Updates Now Appear As Priority Updates On Ms Update j9

Yesterday and today I noticed for the first time that MSE updates appear as pending priority updates on Microsoft Update. This does not appear to help on the 24-hours update latency requirement before auto updating. Any comments on the significance of
    this?

DB:3.01:Windows Xp Updatesmse Has Quit Updating xs

I have Windows XP and have been for a few years now and all of the sudden I notice the Microsoft Essntials was not updating and found out that these updates are connected with Windows updates as well. One day I had updates and now I do not. I've tried a
few different things to correct this and nothing seems to work! Suggestions would be welcomed!

Ihave made sure Automatic updates is turned on. I can download updates for Microsoft Essentials manually and have been doing the same for windows and they seem to be working when I do this.

DB:3.01:Windows Xp Updatesmse Has Quit Updating xs

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply - preferablywithout
    quoting my post:

1b. Was it a brand-new computer or a used computer when you got it?

    2a. Was
Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) originally offered installed via Windows Update or did you intentionally
    choose to install it?

2b. In Windows Explorer [WinKey+E], navigate to right-click on

    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client =this folder

Select Properties: What is the Created date displayed on the resulting
    General tab?

2c. What ANTIMALWARE CLIENT version is currently installed? To find out, open MSE click on the downward-pointing arrow to the right of HELP then select ABOUT SECURITY ESSENTIALS.

    2d. What ENGINE version?

    3. What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE, was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed MSE?

4a. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?

4b. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
