    Dear All,

Does anyone install 9iAS 1022 on Linux?
I need to install 9iAS 1022 on Red Hat linux 6.0 and 817 db on RH6.2.
But, I have confuse on the JDK for installation.

    on RH6.2 box
    install 817 db use jdk1.2.2 jre118_v3

    on RH6.0 box
    install 9iAS 1022 Enterprise edt use jdk1.1.8
    install 9iAS 1022 Minimal edt use jdk1.2.2

    Is that right?

I have found that the JDK dependency on the installation guide of 9iAS1022.
The Portal only install with jdk1.2.2. So, Is it right that I need to
install 9iAS EE Min Edt on the same machine and using different JDK version?
How about jre? Do I need to install any JRE on the RH6.0 box?

If the above true, is that I need to reconfigure the Apache Jserv port
(7777 8007) for port conflict on the same machine? any ports need reconfigure also?
Is that just change the port at httpd.conf jserv.properties file?
Any extra components need consider? (If I install 9iAS EE first, then 9iAS ME.)

I also want to ask if I need to change the hostname and the IP of both machine,
how can i do to reconfigure the 9iAS components function well? what components I need to
    reconfigure??

    Thanks for advance.

First of all, you need to go through the preinstallation tasks mentioned in Install guide. Also if you are selecting either Oracle9iAS Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition install types, since they bring Database installs using default ports, you need to change your old database port numbers to some other values.

You should select a different Oracle_home(s) for 9iAS install.

The reson why i am not installing portal on the main 8i db is because there is already load on that db thats why i installed portal on the machine where i installed 9iAS .
Is it possible for portal to communicate with main 8i db (remember that portal is on the machine where i am having 9iAS . it is not installed on the machine where iam having my main 8i db).

Check if a simple servlet is running fine for you. For that check the following URL,
    http://(host):(port#)/servlet/IsItWorking
    with exact the same case.

If this is not working, then there could be some misconfiguration in your Apche-Jserv files which is causing the failuire for JServ. To find the cause, further you may need to look into various log files located in $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Jserv/logs and $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/logs.

You can install jdeveloper on the same box as 8.1.7, just put it in it's own home. You can install 9iAS on the same box as 8.1.7. Just uninstall the HTTP items on 8.1.7 and go through the registry and delete all occurences of the HTTP server. Then, install 9iAS in the same home as 8.1.7. They will both share the same http server and 9iAS will upgrade the 8.1.7 development toolkit. Install jDeveloper after installing 8.1.7 and 9iAS.

    Hello !

Can we make two oracle homes in Linux .
In one home i have to install 8i database and in the other home i have to install 9iAS.

What i think is , for two oracle homes in linux u need to make two oracle users first ,and in two different bash_profile file u have to give the path of oracle home. So this thing will not allow to start
your database every time. u have to change user every time and then start your database .
This thing will create problem .

I don't see why not. I used to use Red Hat and it worked the same.

Say you want to start the database, open a terminal and do something like

    su - oracle
    give password

    . setupdbenv
small script you write to set your SID, ORACLE_HOME, etc

then start the database in that terminal.

Similarly, for Oracle9iAS, log on using the correct user (root?), set the environment using something like . setupiasenv, and do the apachectl thing.

I have 5 different Java environments I can setup in this way. Would be impossible if I used .bashrc or .profile to setup my environments.

When I choose 9iAS Standard Edition and press Next, the installation proceeds upto the point where it seems to create an ORAINST directory and a cleanup.bat file inside it.

Then, it seems the installation is attempting to write some files that are protected under Windows2000

    Windows gives a message:
"Files that are required for Windows to function properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions... Insert your WIndows 2000 CDROM"

Unless other options are available, my plan is to use a Java servlet to access the 8i database on the UNIX box and display

I have specifically not installed on Linux database, but the iCache configuration hanging at 16% is reported a couple of times which is mainly due to the pre-configuration required for database.

If you are not really keen on using database cache you can cancel it and go ahead.

If you want to use database cache, from the cmd prompt use
    cmd tnsping extproc_connection_data

If not that means you have not configured your database. Refer to preinstalltion steps in installation guide and then invoke the cache configuration assistant using the cmd

    2. install 9ias 1.0.2.2.2 on the 'New Box B' [for Portal middletier], during which give some junk value for the connect string in portal configuration assistant, which will skip installing anything to the database. As we already have the portal and sso schema in the database.

    4. Use net8 assistant on 'New Box B' and 'New Box C' and provider the connect string to the database which we cloned on the 'New Box A'.

    5. run ssodatax with the proper parameter of portal midt and loginserver midt url from 'New Box B'. [ Note : the same ssodatax can be run on 'New Box C' also, as both the box has the connect string to the DB in 'New Box A'.]

    DB:2.74:Oracle Clustering On Linux. jc

Does anyone know whether it is possible to implement Oracle
clustering on Linux? Particularly with Oracle 8i? Essentially we
want to build a website with two webservers, one Oracle DB
server, and one backup Oracle DB server. If the main Oracle DB
server fails we want the other to kick in immediately, i.e. be a
    failover DB server.

Also - does anyone know where I can find information on
licensing costs for Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition for Linux?

    DB:2.74:Oracle 9ias, Jserv Servlet, Oracle 8i Db/Jvm Question??? z3

Oracle 9iAS, Jserv Servlet, Oracle 8i DB/JVM question

    Hello,

We have Oracle 9iAS (including Jserv so we can run Java servlets) up and running.

We also have an Oracle 8i DB up and running.

I understand that the Servlets that are running in the Jserv engine can talk to the Oracle 8i DB via JDBC and return rows of data back BUT, what if I want a Servlet that is running in the Jserv engine to be able to "talk to" a Java Stored Procedure that is running in the Oracle 8iJVM?????

Sorta like an API or something that will let my Servlet that is running in the Jserv JVM pass and receive objects to the Java Stored Procedures that are running in the Oracle 8i DB JVM.

What are my different options??? RMI, is there a way to do it via JDBC, etc.?????

Is there ANY info about it out on the web?????

    Thanks much!!!!

    DB:2.74:Oracle 9ias, Jserv Servlet, Oracle 8i Db/Jvm Question??? z3

Java Stored Procedures are reachable or activated through SQL statement execution. From Servlets/JServ, JDBC is, for now, your only option. They can only return database rows (Support for Result sets is new in Oracle9i Database)

Invoking a Java Stored procedure running in the 8iJVM in the database would be very similar to invoking a PL/SQL stored procedure in the database. You can use JDBC to talk to the database and invoke the stored procedure.

    Hi Giridhar

While you can definitely use PSP to generate HTML-based reports, PSP is mainly designed for general script page development in PSP.

For you need, you may want to consider Oracle Portal product, which enables you to produce sophisticated, HTML-based reports which require virtually no programming at all. IMO, it will probably satisfy your needs.

    There won't be a release1 to release2 upgrade path
until the release of 904 of release2. This is INCORRECT. The FINAL step of the Release 1 to Release 2 upgrade path for Oracle9iAS Portal will be made available with Portal upgrade release version 9.0.2.6, NOT 9.0.4. This 9iAS Portal version 9.0.2.6 is scheduled to be available during this Q1 Calendar year 2002.

It is important to note that customers can begin the upgrade process TODAY, using the steps outlined in detail in the "Oracle9iAS Release 2 - Preparation for Upgrade" white paper.

The link to the white paper is below:

    http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/OTN_CONTENT/MAINPAGE/DEPLOY_PERFORM/PREP_UPGRADE_R2_0.PDF

With the availability of Portal version 9.0.2.6, customers will be able to perform the final step of the Portal upgrade process - upgrading their existing Portal 3.0.9.x portal repositories to 9iAS Release 2, Portal version 9.0.2.6.

Does any one have a clue what might be the problem?

In the 9iAS Performance Guide p5-2, dated April 2002, they suggest tuning tcp. If I have my portal db on one server(A) and my 9iAS midtier and infratructure on another server(B), do I need these tcp tuning set on both A and B?

DB:2.69:Separating The Portal Db And Midtier df

No, those recommendations are primarily for the middle-tier.

Most Unix boxes have their TCP settings tuned for general or database usage. Web serving places different loads on the types and volumes of network traffic.

Ideally you would tune your middle-tier TCP settings as per this advice and tune the DB settings as per standard Oracle DB tuning methodology..

DB:2.68:Db Cache Gives Error During Install! sf

If you examine that tnsnames.ora file, you should see an entry with the name "ora_icache_origin", which contains tns connect information for your origin database. The installer fills out this entry automatically, so you won't have to make any modifications to this file (at least for the purposes of dbca).
If you don't see this tns entry, or if you see that the entry is not correctly and completely filled-out, then there was an error in your installation. In this case, examine the oraInventory/logs/installActions.log file to determine what went wrong.
If that entry is complete, and you're still getting the error, there's some other problem. In that case, click on the "Show details" button (in your dbca dialog box), to see exactly what errors occurred.

DB:2.68:I Am New In Portal Development . From Where To Start z1

    Seemab,

I feel your pain. After having been at this for a couple of
months, here's what I have to offer you.

    0) Watch every single one of the portal tutorials on this
website. They are little movies and slide shows with tutorials
and actual application walkthroughs that were EXTREMELY HELPFUL
to me and my team in the absence of formalized training. They
    were really great.

    1) Take a few days and read every single white paper that you
can about Oracle 9iAS Portal and its architecture.

    2) Use the portal interface to create groups and users.

    3) Experiment with as many aspects of the portal interface that
you can. This will help you see the strengths and limitations
of portal, and where you may need to focus your development
    effort.

    4) Create database objects like tables by using the portal
interface. Create an LOV off of one of the tables, and use it
in a form. This is all just general stuff that helped
    familiarize me with portal.

    5) Publish different kinds of documents to the portal.

    6) Create a PL/SQL item in a portal. Educate yourself on the
HTP and HTF procedures and functions to print things to the
    screen dynamically.

    7) Most important of all, download as many pieces of sample
code as you can and install it to portal. On this website you
will find numerous instances of sample portlets and
applications. You will learn what it takes to install Java-
    based providers, servlets, and others.

    8) Using a good PL/SQL tool like SQL*Navigator or TOAD, browse
your way through the PORTAL30 data dictionary, going through all
of the tables and especially the packages. This will help you
learn where you need to write code to interact with the
    underlying objects in Portal.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific than that, but you can really
be on your way to becoming a well-rounded portal developer by
experimenting with these things that I have listed.

    Good luck!

    Sincerely,
    Adrian Klingel

No you don't need a separate user. Just a shell script to change the environment.

This is fairly standard on all unix platforms and is covered in the manuals, generally you run .oraenv or .coraenv which is really just a shell script which resets the environment.(theres probably a bash shell script for linux I haven't checked). However you can write your own to suit you needs. Generally the format is that the script it prompts you for an instance name and sets the environment approppriately but it could prompt you for anything.

    for example
echo "which environmnet do you want"
    read OENV
    case $OENV in

DB:2.67:Portal 3.0.9 Install Problem - Detected Java Option Not Enabled 8z

As Huy mentioned you need to install java VM into the
instance/database you are installing portal into. To verify
it's status run the following script in sqlplus as sys user:

/* checks if java is installed */
    select count(*) from dba_objects where object_type like 'JAVA%';
SELECT COUNT(*) from dba_objects where object_type like 'JAVA%'
    and status = 'INVALID';

If jvm is installed then the first count is around 10270 in
8.1.7 db and the secound count (invalid) = 0. If the first count
is 0 then you need to load jvm. Consult Metalink document id:
    Note: 132936.1

I ran the scripts from the 9iAS machine using the 9iAS version
of the scripts but into the 8i database on the other machine.
