DB:4.32:Hi I Tray To Install Microsoft Security Essential I Get This Error Code 0x80070648 j3

    Hi Mohamed,

For information about what to do concerning that error, see the following thread:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/installation-error-0x80070643/908fad3e-f9fc-4d8a-be83-ae7d3bc48db5.

The following may also be useful, but mostly if using XP (though some of it may apply to other OS):http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/microsoft-security-essential-error-0x80070643/85460032-9fcb-4743-be6b-e703c1ee6794.

    ******************************************************************

Here are general instructions for installing MSE if you get past that or if this helps you avoid that error (but start with those articles first as dealing with the error first is better than just trying to install again and hoping it won't happen):

To uninstall MSE (who knows what's there after all these attempts, so best to start from scratch), proceed as follows:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4.

To re-install, check out this article and follow ALL the procedures:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/check-list-for-installing-microsoft-security/bf757e6a-e320-4a67-92bc-767e6acb26c4 - but also check out the next paragraph before you begin the download.

If you do or ever did have any other AV program installed on your computer (even if you didn't use it), you need to make sure they are all uninstalled and fully removed before you install. To fully remove them, check out this listing of removal toolshttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91
or the listing in that article at the bottom under troubleshooting steps (why this link isn't at the top near things to do first where it discusses removing all the prior and current AV programs is beyond me) or, if not on the lists, go to the website of the
AV software and get and use the removal tool for that product. You cannot just uninstall these programs – you MUST also use the removal tool – even if the uninstall was years ago but you didn’t use a removal tool at the time.

    To install, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx and click on languages and locales at the bottom of the Download button and then choose your language and the appropriate version for your operating system. When you download, save it to the
desktop (rather than running it). When finished, right click on the installation icon and click run as Administrator (even if you’re logged in as an administrator) as I’ve found this sometimes helps.

Then you need to configure your settings, set a scheduled scan, enable real-time protection, update MSE, and then run a quick scan (or a full scan if you have time).

I also recommend the following setup for MSE (though the decision is yours - I've just found this helpful and the most effective and best way to set it up and is how I have mine configured):

Make sure that ALL threat levels are sent to Quarantine where you can then decide whether or not to allow them or leave them there, or remove them. It is the safest solution for having the most options for dealing with the situation. Quarantine is as safe
as removed, but in some cases you may want to remove them to be more certain - and with this one I would remove it (when the time comes). To do this, open MSE, click on the Settings Tab, and for each of the threat levels, set the action to be Quarantine and
    save.

Go to the History tab and click on allowed and unless you specifically placed something in allowed, remove everything else from the allowed category. Only put things there that you ABSOLUTELY know are not problems (are "false positives") and triple-check
before you do it as doing this could allow a real threat to bypass security and infect you and it won't be detected or rather won't be reported or acted upon by MSE.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Real-time protection and check all the boxes and save.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on SpyNet and click on Advanced and save. This is not at all dangerous to you and no information sent will be used by Microsoft to identify you even if some minor identification information is sent in terms of defining the
infection, but it can sometimes help with new threats by initiating an immediate update to deal with the problem if it is in the SpyNet database (and it helps Microsoft update definitions to provide you and everyone else better protection).

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Advanced and check the box for save Quarantine items and change it from one month to three months so you have more time to decide if you want to restore something.

    *************************************************************

If that doesn't help, then there's a good chance you may be infected by malware. Please proceed as follows:

First, try the following programs if you haven't as they may help. I recommend you download, install, update, and run full scans with Malwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware:http://superantispyware.com/
and then run a full Safety Scan from Microsoft:http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx. These may or may not remove the infections, but will probably not repair
any damage caused by them. Even if they or your current AV software seem to work or indicate you aren't infected, you shouldn't completely trust them and need to continue with the recommendations that follow (so it's up to you if you want to try them first
or just skip over all of this and get the expert help you really need as described below).

Properly and completely removing such infections can be complex and often require manual removal procedures (which may or may not be entirely effective either). Even if they work, I'd suggest the following anyway, so we may as well start there (you can ignore
the above removal methods if you want as this is really the way to go, but it won't hurt to try them).

Please follow these recommendations compliments of Stephen Boots - MVP:

Start here - https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/ and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected
    - and then select the support option for phone, chat or email (options will vary by Region)
Say that though you aren't actually using it yet, you think an infection is preventing you from installing so you can use this faster and better option.

If you are in North America, you can call 866-727-2338 for free help from Microsoft for virus and spyware infections.

In other regions not served by the link above, go here:http://Support.microsoft.com/securityand go to the “assisted support” or contact us menu.

If that doesn't work or they can't help, try one of the following malware-removal forums compliments of PA Bear - MVP:

I can recommend the expert assistance offered in these forums:http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
    and http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30

    **************************************************

If none of the above helps, then open a support case describing the problem starting at:https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

You can manually download the (large file with engine and full definitions) latest definitions from the portal here:
    https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx

Is there an error number shown along with the text?
Is the computer date and time correct (month. day, year, time, time zone)?
Open MSE and tell us what version the definitions are currently shown as on the update tab, the creation date, and the last updated date/time information.
Is this a new installation? If not, when did this problem begin?
    Does Windows Update work?
The problem may also be due to undetected malware.

    Try Hitman Pro Trial Version:
http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro This program may be run from a flash drive. You may need to run it in Safe Mode or Safe Mode With Networking.
    And/or

What operating system and service pack?
    Prior Security Software?
    Any security software still installed?
A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

DB:3.65:Can We Install Microsoft Security Essential On A Network 300 Computers In A Non Profit Making Medical College In Delhi, India. Is It Legal f1

    Hi Ajaybansal,

Absolutely not! MSE can only be installed in small businesses with no more than 10 computers. In fact, it's not even allowed at all in this case because it's an educational instituation - so there are two reasons in your case. Please read this in the
    EULA:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials/eula(the bold is my emphasis):

    INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.

Home Use. If you are a home user, then you may install and use any number of copies of the software on your personal devices for use by people who reside in your household.

Small Business. If you operate a small business, then you may install and use the software on
up to ten (10) devices in your business.

Restrictions. The software may not be used on devices owned by government or academic institutions.

Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices.

Included Microsoft Programs. The software may contain other
Microsoft programs. The license terms with those programs apply to your use of them.

For one alternative see Microsoft ForeFront:
    http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/en/ca/default.aspxand
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/server-cloud/forefront/default.aspx,

For another alternative see Microsoft Intune:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windowsintune/pc-management.aspx,

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

DB:3.63:Does Windows Defender Complement Microsoft Security Essentials cd

Windows Defender's functions are included in MSE so loading Defender would be redundant.

    Windows Defender =antispyware

    MSE = antivirus + antispyware.

So think of MSE as Windows Defender with more added (which it is).

    Check your hidden device drivers
How to display hidden device drivers.

Before you do the following procedure, check the Services to make sure no old deleted services are still active. Many software utilities do a very bad job of uninstalling.

In order to show hidden devices:

Right click My Computer and Select Properties Click Advanced tab Click Environment Variables Below the bottom Environment Variables window pane (System Variables), click New
For Variable Name, enter devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices For Variable Value enter 1 Click OK. OK to close My Computer Open Device Manager, click on View, select show hidden devices from the menu. Most of the orphans will be in non-plug and play drivers and the icons will appear grayed out. You can right click the grayed out driver and click uninstall.

Some drivers that are NOT grayed out are not needed as well, for example, AVG, Symantec and others. These should be uninstalled.

If you do not know what the driver is, check this reference.

    http://www.sysnative.com/drivers/

If it is not in the list bing or google it. Do not delete what you do not know.

If I'm generous presume you didn't start using the new computer onlineuntil earlyJune 2010, that still would mean the Norton free-trial had expired nearly
two months before you installed MSE, correct?

Does Windows Update work? I suspect it doesn't.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer.
    Now re-register the following files:-
    1. Click Start.

    3. In the Run box, type (press okay after each one) :-

    Any security software still installed?
A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

Let me answer your questions one at a time:

    1. MSE does not come with a firewall component.
    2. You can install a 3rd-party firewall provided it does not block MSE's updating.
    3. You can install other non-AV applications like SD or Ad-Aware so long as it does not have an AV component. Since having 2 or more AVs can degrade system performance and/or cause conflictsin your operating system.

How can I disable Microsoft Security Essential temporarily?

    DB:3.37:Microsoft Security Essential a3

    Hi Shaddo 1,
Disabling any anti virus application isn't really wise. However you must have a reason for wanting to 'temporaily' disable MSE so do the following:
1/ Right Click the MSE icon in the notification area.
    2/ Select Open.
3/ When MSE opens, click on the Settings tab.
4/ look down the list on the left hand side of the window for 'real time protection' and clcik on it.
5/ In the 'real time protection' window, remove the check mark (tick) from the 'turn on real time protection' option and then click Save changes.
This will temporarily disable MSE. Just remember to re-enable MSE when you have finished doing whatever it is you require MSE to be turned off for.

    ******************************************************************

Here are general instructions for installing MSE if you get past that or if this helps you avoid that error:

Start here - https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/ and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected - and then select the
support option for phone, chat or email (options will vary by Region)

DB:3.31:How Do I Install Microsoft Security Eseentials Scanner jp

    Hi Chantal,

    There's nothing extra to install.

Open MSE. To do this you can double-click on the MSE icon in the notification area of the toolbar. Another way is to go to Start / All Programs and double click on Microsoft Security Essentials. Either will open the program.

You should be on the Home Tab. To the right are three manual scan options - Quick, Full, or Custom. Choose the radio button for the type of scan you want and then click on the Scan Now button below them. It should begin scanning. That's it.

As far as scheduled scans and what you want to include or exclude in scans and how much CPU you want dedicated to scans and many other such things, that's a whole other thing. All of this is essentially in the Settings tab. If you need more assistance,
    please post back.

    I hope this helps.

I've marked Kosh's reply as an aditional answer.
If you are being offered this update via Windows Update there's a problem. You absolutely should not be trying ti use MSE on Windows 8 at all, as noted by Andre, but you may not be able to remove what you have already done and have Windows Defender fully
    enabled as it should be.
My resommendation is that you use the Windows 8 functionality to restore Windows 8 to a clean install condition.

Trying to remove Microsoft Security Essential program, is MSXML 4.0 SP@ (KB954430) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688) part of this program? After deleting Microsoft Security Essential from the Control Panel, I notice I have an icon at the below right of my screen
which is Windows Security Center (Security Essential).

    Thanks

MSXML is not part of MSE.
Windows Security Center? That isn't MSE.
