    DB:3.25:Inserting Japanese Characters In A Database f9

Not sure what your overall requirements from an application
support standpoint. But a simple way would be to use UNIST.
    Here is a description:

UNISTR takes as its argument a string and returns it in the national character set.The national character set of the database can be either AL16UTF16 or UTF8.
UNISTR provides support for Unicode string literals by letting you specify the Unicode encoding value of characters in the string. This is useful, for example, for
    inserting data into NCHAR columns.

The Unicode encoding value has the form '\xxxx' where 'xxxx' is the hexadecimal value of a character in UCS-2 encoding format. To include the backslash in
the string itself, precede it with another backslash (\\).

For portability and data preservation, Oracle Corporation recommends that in the UNISTR string argument you specify only ASCII characters and the Unicode
    encoding values.

    Examples

The following example passes both ASCII characters and Unicode encoding values to the UNISTR function, which returns the string in the national character
    set:

    SELECT UNISTR('abc\00e5\00f1\00f6') FROM DUAL;

This is the way configured 8i to failover in a clustering env.
Install 8i s/w on the Internal disk of both the servers.
Create the database on the first server and specify all the data files, redo log and udump, bdump to be on the shared drives.
This will create a OracleServicePROD (PROD Database) and the listener Service on the first server.
After installing 8i on the second server create the service using oradim.
Check if u are able to start the database from both the servers.

Yes, I think so. Since Orcle Universal Installer is based on JDK
1.1.7 (I think) and P4 has some compatibility issues with this
    version of JDK.
Use the following method to resolve the problem:
    1. Obtain Patch number 1507768 from metalink and follow the
    instructions.
    2. copy the contents of the installation cd to harddisk and
rename all occurences of the file "symcjit.dll"

If this a one-time migration from SQL Server to an Oracle Server and you are looking to have an exact copy of all the data and database objects - use Oracle Migration Workbench

If SQL Server and Oracle databases will continue to exist along-side and the data needs to be incrementally updated in Oracle database, or if the data needs to be transformed as it is moved - use Oracle Warehouse Builder.

One word of caution: Oracle Migration Workbench is not certified to migrate data or schema object names that contain non-English language characters, but this has been done successfully.

Note that besides the product documentation on Oracle Migration Workbench, there is a very detailed white paper specific to MS SQL -gt; Oracle migration http://otn.oracle.com/tech/migration/ama/docs/ama_wp.pdf

I have created an Oracle User account on the server and copied RH_LINUX folder containing the installation files for OBIEE in the Oracle User folder.

    When I run [oracle@machinename Oracle_Business_Intelligence]$ ./UnixChk.sh -s, it gives SUCCESS.

The installation simply stops without going forward.

This is a standard Windows error message. The problem is a consequence of too low system resources being available.

    a) Check that you have enough space on your hard drive and big enough Disk Usage Quota (Explorer - right click - Quota Management).

    b) Try installing service packs for Windows

    c) Check that you have enough RAM available

    d) Try closing all unneccessary running applications

I don't know about Oracle specific steps, you should check the DB specific guide for BW instllation under the a href="http://service.sap.com/instguides/"/INSTGUIDES/a quicklink for BW.

Are you installing this in the same Home as the Database you want to monitor?

You need to start fresh. Uninstall what you can for OEM only.

If you specified a separate home, goto the registry and clean out the OEM strings under its home only!!!. Also goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ for all control sets and clearout OEM specific references only, note the directories for OEM. Then delete all OEM specific directories using Windows explore.

    Be careful.

Reboot, Reinstall, and Accept all defaults, even the passwords. You can change these later.

If I look in the Oracle Administration Assistan for Windows NT it states that the current user is a member of SYSDBA.

    DB:2.77:Recover Schemas sm

Is windows bootable to a runnable state or do you have a non-running Windows with access to the filesystem?

You could try install the product and setup all the directory structures exactly the same and try starting up (would be easier to do on UNIX) but you may have problems with registry entries with the product and services for the databases. If you have all the archive logs up to date (on the server that crashed) and a backup you can try restoring to the other server and rolling forward the archive logs. If the other server does not have the Oracle product installed you will need to install it up to the exact version with the same patches applied (for example, 9.2.0.7).

If you can get the database started on the "crashed" server then you can export the data and import it to a database on the other server.

is any easy way to get the Win2k information into NW other than manual

recreation of all scopes and reservations. Not impossible but very

timeconsuming. Problem is there is a fair amount of printers and such all

You can add your own options, but there aren\'t any Novell docs on the details

forum for \'option 150\' and/or Google \'dhcp option 150\'. You should be able

to turn something up to get you going.

    * Looks like the scopes on Win2k system automatically update the DHCP info

in DNS. Should we have auto generated names for reverses setup on NW?

With NW 6.5 you have 2 options for Dynamic DNS... let the client machines

update their own DNS settings when they get DHCP assignments, or have your

DHCP server update your DNS. Windows 2000 and later defaults to updating its

own DNS records, so there is no need for Novell\'s DDNS unless you have lots

of older or non-Windows machines. Given that. the Windows machines will

update their own reverse records as well... if you find that info to be

helpful, then you can use it, otherwise it isn\'t really necessary.

    * Each of the scopes on Win2k has a router entry... I assume I\'ll need

I am a starter with Oracle database and facing some difficulty installing 8.1.7 Rel 3 on Windows 2000 professioal (SP3). The problem is Oracle Universal installer terminates after showing initial screen. It doesn't show any error message.

Could Oracle Gurus throw some light in the direction of solving this problem?

DB:2.74:Oracle 8i Standard Edition Installation On Win2k Professional sd

This should work to install Oracle 8i on a Pentium 4:

    1. Create a temporary directory on your server.

    2. Copy the entire contents of the Oracle RDBMS Server CD to the temporary directory created in step 1.

    3. Search the directory structure created in Step 1 for the existence of the filename symcjit.dll.

    4. Rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old.

    5. Search the entire contents of your hard disk for symcjit.dll and Rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old.

    6. Run the setup.exe from the \install\win32 directory and install Oracle 8.1.x and related products.

    7. This works Nicely

i am actually trying oracle DB 9i at home with the following system.

    Pentium 3 800, 256MB, Win2k Professional SP3.

Previously, my pc runs smoothly but after the installation of oracle 9i (Standard), it has taken off around 150MB of my memory. Windows Task Manager reported MEM Ussage 400MB. dat's like twice my physical memory. this slows my system so badly n i need to wait like 2 minutes to start up JDeveloper.

I need the oracle db to test my out some of the Oracle JDeveloper's BC4J application. basically, a basic DB engine.. like the down scale MS Server, MS Data Engine (MSDE) would do me good. Any solution to make oracle db consumes less resources?

First, ensure EM is up and running and your database is properly configured and registered against the listener.

The most frequently seen issue with EM in win2003 has to do with IE enhanced security. Deinstall it and retry it. You could test EM by using another browser such as Firefox or Netscape.

    Dear friends,

I have a question about oracle installations and windows versions.

I have a spare PC having 1.2 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 3 HDs (40GB, 40GB, 60GB) that I intend to use as a development server for an Oracle Content Database project. Having in mind that the memory this computer has is just sufficient for the content DB to work (Oracle suggest a minimum of 2 GB RAM) which Windows version would you suggest me to use? I know that a Linux installation would have been a far better choice, but the production installation will be on MS Windows also... I suppose that a Win2K Server installation would consume far less memory than a Win2003 Server installation. Is that right?

If anyone can help, please do! :)
    Thank you in advance,

DB:2.73:Oracle Installations And Win 2000 Vs Win 2003 xp

For testing WinXP is fine (we use it). Just check your init.ora parameters to make sure memory usage is not too big (0.5 to 1 GB). Aim to have everything running in main memory (oracle.exe, O/S, anti-virus etc) i.e. no paging. A 1.2Ghz machine will be slow enough without the overhead of paging. Also you'll need to keep an eye on disk space,

    Hi
I need some docs for 8i installation on win2K. Also I've a small doubt.... I want to move one database (8.1.7.4) to a new server. On this new server I have to install Oracle 8.1.0...... Now the doubt is if I do backup/restore from the old server, do I still have to apply patch 4 on the new server???

    Any input is appreciated.

    Regards

    DB:2.73:Urgent--- Small Doubt k8

    Hi,
I suggest you apply the patch becuase the database backup has the version info which is 8.1.4. Thus when you will use the 8.1.0 Oracle kernel to start a 8.1.4 database then it might give an error. It is best suited to apply the patches in the new server the way it is in the old one. Once you have applied the patches in Oracle kernel (Oracle Software) you may go ahead with opening the database.
This will keep the versions of the Oracle kernel and the version info in the database control file in sync.

    Regards.

    Hi

I installed 10g database on my Win2K OS. I had accepted defaults and could even open up the EM from the browser. Later I installed Oracle 9iDS on the same machine but different home. Now when I invoke EM console, it says database is unavailable. Tried the 'Startup' from the console but in vain. I found that there was no tnsnames.ora file in the Oracle 9iDS home directory (c:/oracle/product/9iDS/network/admin). So copied the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files from 10g HOME directory. But couldn't get to work.
Later I added a registry key TNS_ADMIN under the HOME0 for ALL_HOMES. I entered the key value to point to tnsnames.ora file in 10g HOME directory. No luck.
At the command prompt I can connect to SQLPLUS as dummy. At SQL prompt conn / as sysdba gives me the error:
