I do have Office 2002 XP installed on my laptop and would like to have it installed on my new netbook as well.
Since Office XP was preinstalled on my laptop, I don't have the CD's, but obviously I do have the license key.
On my new netbook, obviously I don't have a optical drive anyway.
So, how can I get Office XP installed on my new netbook?

    Thanks

DB:2.99:Installing Office Xp On A Second Computerwithout Cds And No Optical Drive For The Netbook m9

You cannot install Office XP on your netbook because your version is an OEM which is only licensed for the computer (your laptop)it originally came with. I would suggest purchasing a downloadable version ofMicrosoft
Office 2007which will include a free upgrade to Microsoft Office 2010.

I did not do anything different to my netbook and it has been working fine, finding networks. When I turned it on tonight at home, it did not find any of the network and indicated it was trying to connect with Atheros. I looked it up and see that it
is some type of controller, nothing I put on there myself. How did it get there? How do I get rid of it? When I try to uninstall it, it actually starts installing. To me, it all looks shady; like a virus or something. Can anyone help. I cannot connect
to the internet at all with my netbook now.

DB:2.88:Atheros Was Automatically Installed On My Netbook And Disabled All Of My Networks. 8s

    Hi
Atheros is an OEM manufacturer of Wireless Card.
    http://www.atheros.com/
Your netbook probably has a Wireless card made by Atheros.
For some reason you lost the original installation, when you started the computer, it found the card and Windows installed the drivers.
This is good, you need this card in order to connect.
    In general.
Most Laptops have a physical switch for the Wireless card. Read the computer's manual and make sure that the Wireless card is On.
Check the Device Manager for valid Wireless card entry.
    http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_dm.jpg
If there is No valid entry, delete any Bogus Entry, and re-install the Wireless card's Drivers.
Check the Network connections to make sure that you have a Wireless Network Connection Icon/Entry, and that the Properties of the Icon (right click on the Icon) are correctly configured with TCP/IPv4 protocol in the Network Connections Properties.
    http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_connection_tcp.jpg

Make sure that if there is a vendor's Wireless Utility the utility is Not Running together with the Windows native Wireless utility.
Make sure that No Firewall is preventing/blocking the Wireless components to get to the Network.
If everything above is OK and it is not connecting to the Wireless router. Log from any computer that is, or can be connected to Wireless Router with a Wire, disable the Wireless Security, make sure that the Wireless broadcast is On, and try to connect with
    No Wireless security.
When working turn On the Wireless security.
Note* People sometimes make mistakes in writing and retyping the security passphrase.
Alternative way is to copy it from the Router's menu, and then paste when asked by the Wireless card.

hello, my problem is that i cant use wlan on my netbook: s10-3s (model "0703"). I formatted the hdd and installed windows7 32bit (before is was the same, but starter-edition). Usually all hardware magically works with win7, but not with the hardware of this netbook. Graphicschip, Ethernet and, WirelessLan was not working after the fresh install of windows. So i went to the lenovo-support site and downloaded all drivers in the sections for the hardware that didnt work properly. This fixed my problem with the intel-graphicschip and the ethernet controller, so i could connect to the internet via lan-cable to my router. after downloading and installing all of the 4 wlan drivers listed on the list for my model, it still was not working. i have no more unknown device in the device manager, but i doesnt recognize any wlan-networks, so i doubt any driver worked. i read that the netbook may have one of these wlan-chips: atheros, broadcom and intel. my netbook seems to have a broadcom one (it says "Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter" in the adapter properties). the wlan-switch on my netbook is turned on and the acording led is turned on thanks in advance

DB:2.77:(Vaio Pcg-C1mhp) Wipe Hard Drive And Install Linux, Without Logging In js

    Hello everyone,

I was given an old netbook by a friend of ours, to sell on eBay. However, he couldn't remember the password, and had set a password for the Administrator account, which he forgot as well (not very helpful).

I've tried using tools like Ophcrack (I think that's what it's called, anyway.), but have got nowhere.

Obviously, there is no DVD drive, which makes things complicated (though the BIOS seems to think there is one), and although there is a floppy disk drive, I haven't had any disks for many years now! I will see if I can find one in the little computer shop in my town, just in case.

In the meantime however, I'd like to get this sorted asap!

Basically, I'd like to either reset the password and restore the installation to factory settings, or just install Linux. At the moment, I've been trying to install Linux via USB, but this netbook doesn't seem to want to recognise the fact that it's even there. I have changed the BIOS settings to check for Removable Devices first, and put the HDD at the very bottom. Disabling booting from the HDD gives a 'No Operating System found' error in startup. That doesn't work.

I've formatted a 4GB USB stick of mine, and installed Ubuntu (the newest version, I think) using both 'uNet Bootin' and 'Universal USB Installer', neither of which worked.

I also tried selecting the Removable Devices option on startup, by pressing Escape and selecting it from the list of boot devices.

Note: the boot devices shown on the list are: Removable Devices, CD Drive, Network Boot and Hard Disk Drive.

I will attempt the floppy disk route if I can find a floppy disk tomorrow. I have a USB floppy disk drive that I can plug into my actual laptop, and I'll put muLinux onto it, which is apparently made specifically for floppy disks. (The OS is only 1.4MB, I believe)

Any suggestions? I'd love to get this sorted!

    Thanks very much,

    Tristan

Wow, that was a quick response!

That's annoying - he originally gave me a bag of electronic stuff he cleared out, and I remember there being a weird CD drive that I didn't give a second glance, and put in the 'not sellable' pile. I also remember there being a recovery CD, which I think I may have kept. I'll check tomorrow, but I'm not positive that I still have it...

Ok, so it doesn't boot from a USB memory stick. I do have the USB Floppy Drive. Problem is, will Windows need to officially recognise the device after startup? I can't see anything there about Plug and Play, though I don't think that is relevant to this situation.

The same goes for the CD Drive you so knidly found - would it not need to be installed in some way first? Because I can't even get beyond the Log In section.

Of course the product key on the Windows 7 sticker would not work to activate Office.

Does Uncle have a proof of purchase for Office? Just being installed on the computer means nothing, as most computers come with some sort of free Office trial that stops working after the trial period unless you purchase a license to continue to use the
    software.

So, is there anyway to deactive the product from the netbook, and
    have it reactivated somewhere else?

First of all, is the Windows 7 copy you bought a retail copy or an OEM
copy. If it's a retail copy, you can do this. If it's an OEM copy, its
license ties it permanently to the first computer it's installed on
and it may never be moved to another.

If it's a retail copy, simply uninstall it from the Netbook; there is
no process called deactivation. Then install it on your main machine
and activate it. *Online* activation will fail, but just do the
telephone activation you are prompted to do; it's quick and easy.

Later I decided to upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. I cleaned the drive and set a single partition and then formatted in NTFS. Win 7 was great but refused to run a couple of apps so decided to go back to WinXP. My backup image would not re mount due to the fact that Acer had split the original install between two partitions. So I had to install winxp home from an upgrade disc ( Non OEM ) and use the license that came with the 'Home Upgrade Disc. I can only use this license for a week and then I must remove it from the netbook. Question. How do I get the licence key that came with the netbook ( OEM ) working legaly with the current install that is a retail Home upgrade install.?? The netbook hardware is original and I believe complies to the OEM regs.

This was on a new install with the new installer image (which worked really well for me).

DB:2.69:Crucial Firmware Update Made Ez (Usb Method) xk

There have been questions floating around about (I had asked some of them...), "How do you update your Crucial SSD firmware if you don't have a CD/DVD drive, a burner, or an ISO burning program". My netbook does not have an optical drive, and I didn't want to go purchase and return a USB optical drive just to do this update. (but I did think about it!!!)

    What I did was:

    went to:

    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

downloaded and expanded FW update from Crucial:

    http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx

Inserted one of my lower density USB drives into my system (an old one)

Ran the 'Universal USB Installer' (which doesn't look like it installed, just ran,on my Win 7 machine)

Selected 'Try Unlisted Linux ISO (New Syslinux)' from the Step 1 drop down box.

Selected 'C400-001-***" from the expanded Crucial download.

Selected 'USB flash drive Letter' (Mine was "L")

After I read all the warnings about MBR's, Creating the PenDrive, and trying the 'Unlisted Linux ISO' yadda yadda yadda.., I hit 'Yes', a couple of boxes popped up showing my drive being formatted and loaded.

Once finished and closed, I took the newly created PenDrive (funny name, but, better than the name the manufacturer had called my USB drive) and booted my Netbook from a USB port, and the update went just as described in the Crucial instructions.

I don't know if this works on Apples, or any systems other than my ASUS netbook, but, it worked for me, and saved me a bunch of time, moneyand headache, and I didn't know what to do with my smallest USB drive anyway...?

Let others know if it works on your system.. More speed is awesome!

No, you dont need an initrd. Just add the kernel image as you would with any other kernel and skip the initrd-line.

How do I check if the hard drive is actually lowlevel formatted to 512byte sectors?

If so, how do I lowlevel format back to 4096byte sectors?

As read here,http://http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_caviar_green_2tb_review_wd20earsthis hard drive can be formatted in both ways. But how??

I have tried WD's DLGDIAG for windows, but can't see anything related to this.

If you partitioned and installed Windows 7 on your WD20EARS it will be correctly configured for the 4K alignment.

By default Windows 7 partitions disks for 4K as this type of disk has been available since 09.

No need for alignment software. Which is needed for XP which is not 4K aware.

    Hello Kai,

With the ASUS Netbooks, you sometimes you need to let your system know it has just been upgraded, and that the upgrade is permanent. Try the following steps:

Turn the system on and go into the BIOS (tap F2 when the ASUS logo comes up during boot). Once in the BIOS, all you have to do is select “Save Changes Exit” and then reboot. Windows should now show 2GB.I hope this helps, but if you're still having problems, post back here with the information lordgllynn asked for, and well see what we can do to help you.

    Hello!

I recently installed Arch Linux, noticing that it had good reviews about working well on my netbook (Lenovo s205), which other systems did not. I am stuck though, because I dont know how to configure the internet connection or how to install the GUI offline. I think it would be best to first install the GUI offline because my internet connection is from university and requires some registration from the browser. Could anyone please explain to me how to install the GUI without an internet connection? Yesterday was the first time I used Arch Linux and Im quite new to Linux in general.

    Thank you very much

    NOT a good idea.

Try a cli browser (links i think is in the core install) and use it to authenticate to the network then usee pacman to install any packages you want.

    Hi,

My problem is simple. I have an HP mini netbook. It was running really slow with Windows Starter on it so I formatted the hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Now that I have Ubuntu installed I wanted the extra security of knowing that I could go back to starter if I wanted to. But when I started my computer with Ubuntu installed and went in to system recovery, it was not windows. I fear that I have deleted any trace of Windows off of my computer even though a second drive appeared in Computer. I know that there is a possibility that this was a partition of the main hard drive and just appeared to the user to be a completely seperate drive. Is it possible to recover Windows 7 Starter? Thank you.

Microsoft provides a free tool that allows you to convert the Windows 7 DVD's contents to a USB Thumbdrive.
Microsoft has not been allowed to provide that tool for the last week or two do to copyright rules, that is why I posted a link to instructions on how to make the bootable USB drive youself. The link in Andre's post will not help to create a bootable USB drive.

Hello happyspecialk21,  There is no way to do what you ask.  But, while I am not a licensing expert, if the EULA says on up to three computers it would seem to mean the software is being used on up to three computers. The way I see it is that if you have returned the Laptop, the assumption is that the software is no longer being used (or even existing, since I would hope the company wipes it's returned computers) which would be the same thing as deauthorizing it.I hope that helps,Darin MS

i use the beginers guide to set up my arch on my netbook. I chose beginers guide because I am new to linux. Ubuntu works very well on it. I did try it and test it. I did not want to use to ubuntu because I have never lliked it really. I ran into two problems when installiing Arch. The first was network related. It could not probe my NIC and most of all, the NIC disappeared completely. I could see it while booted from a live cd but once Arch system was launched, it had gone off the grid. I had to reinstall ubuntu to get it working again. I have no idea what happened. lspci would not show it etc.. The second issue was with my trackpad on my netbook. Could not have the click at all. I could not resolve those two issues for the life of me so I stopped the install. I posted on couple of forums to try to get an answer but nothing really probing or that i could use. That is why I think it might not have all the hardware support a distro like ubuntu might have. But again, I know so little about linux that may be I am all wrong here.

DB:2.63:Remove Linpus Linux Lite On A Acer Aspire One 91

Assuming you have a fully licenced retail version of Windows XP, a router, another computer available, and have backed everything up, you would probably want to try a network installation:
    http://www.networkcert.net/xp/install.htm#network
Also, it "might" be possible to copy your fully legal licensed copy of Windows XP to a USB Stick that you can then try booting from.
    http://www.pctipsbox.com/installing-windows-xp-using-a-usb-flash-drive/
Once you are able to boot into the Windows XP Setup utility, you should be able to remove the Linux partitions.
With all of this said, it might just be easier to borrow someone's external USB CD Drive and see if you computer is capable of booting from that.
Also, its shouldn't cost much to simply buy/install a CD ROM Driver for your laptop. You should be able to do the installation yourself.
You must not that you have to have a completely original Retail Version of Windows XP to do any of this. You can't use an OEM copy of Windows XP and you can't use a copy of Windows XP that is installed on any other computers. A licence transfer or acquisition
must take place before any of these procedures can begin.

I can fix it by copying recovery console and editing boot.ini file. But I can't access the Hard disk. I tried with a linux USB version, netbook did boot, but there was not a way for mounting c. Similar with a MSDOS boot USB. The netbook does not have a win

I am pretty technical when it comes to Windows and I was able to install Win 7 on multiple computers from a Flashdrive by using diskpart. The real problem that I have now is that I am trying to install Windows 7 on a netbook. To be more specific it is
an Asus EEE PC 900A which has a limited SSD drive of 4GB (actual formatted space of course is 3.8GB) It came factory with a Linux distro but Windows is far more superior so it will do what I want. Trying to install it straight on gives an error from the install

DB:2.62:I Have The Key From The Label On The Back Of The Netbook. How Do I Reinstall Windows fd

Netbooks often come with the Starter edition of Windows 7, if would like reinstall that, you need to contact the manufacturer of your computer and find out how to go about requesting a recovery media for reinstalling it.

The next option is to purchase an upgrade disc for Windows 7 Home Premium and create a thumbdrive with the installation files on another computer, you can also do the download there too, more information:
    Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool
    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

You will need a thumb drive 4 GBs in size to do this.

    Hi:

I have an iPhone 3g16, and have had it sync'd with my Vista box for over a year. There is about 4gb of music and video, plus some 100 apps on the phone and sync'd with the Vista box.

I just purchased a netbook, installed iTunes, went to the apple store and Authorized the netbook. I plugged in the iPhone, and did a sync. It sync'd my contacts but nothing else. So I went into iTunes, and clicked to allow music to sync and was warned that this sync would erase all my content on the iPhone. Same with apps, and everything else I want to sync to the netbook.

How can I have the existing content on my iPhone be sync'd to my netbook? The apple store claims I can play content on all authorized machines, but I can find no way to get the content onto the netbook.

I also set up "home sharing", which works, and allows me to play content from the main Vista box, but if I go out with my netbook, I obviously lose connection.

    What's the fix here?

    TIA
    Bob

See instructions for creating a bootable USB thumb drive:

You will need to reinstall the qualifying license first before upgrading to Windows 8 again. If the Netbook came with Windows 7 you will need to reinstall that first, then do the upgrade again.

If you are using an Asus EeePC, there were issues if you used a wireless key which has spaces in it. Try changing the wireless key to something shorter, making sure that there are no spaces or non-alphanumeric characters in it. Its possible other Linux distributions have the same problem.

DB:2.59:I Delete The Boot From My Netbook, And I Have Windows7.Exe z1

You should have downloaded two .BOX files and one .EXE file (making three total), double click on that .EXE file to start the process of extracting the Windows 7 install files.
Note: you must use a Windows computer to do this, Linux won't work. If you don't have a Windows computer check to see if you can download the ISO instead.

After you install Windows 7 then install Linux on a separate partition. Popular distros are Ubuntu, Fedora, and PCLinuxOS - but there are many others. Whichever Linux distro you like should have instructions on how to install from a USB flash drive since
you don't have a DVD drive.

If You Want - Create Install USB Flash from Windows 7 Download

You can use one of the links below to create boot media. To use the USB flash drive methods your flash drive must be 4GB or larger.

USB Flash from Setup Files - WinToFlash is a handy application that will help you transfer your Windows 7 setup from a hard drive or DVD to USB flash in a few steps. With this you can install your Windows 7 from a flash card, USB stick, HDD, etc to your computer

The hard-disk is formatted in a way so that only four partitions are allowed.

Hi Zoltan. You'll need to operate on the partitions with gparted. It uses its own partition table type, gpt, instead of the DOS partition type, which limits the number of primary partions to four.I believe that Mint comes with gparted, but you can boot gparted from a live cd or usb. With it you can shrink the Windoze partition to create root, swap and home partitions.Regards,KD

the wireless network with no problem. I did have the netbook printing if I was logged into Win 7 but if my daughter was logged in it would not print. The network application sees the complete network and all system attached to it. After I installed MS Office
2007 on the netbook I cannot print from any user account. Tried removing the network printer from the netbook and reconnecting to it several times and still unable to print. I installed the printer software on the netbook and connected directly to the printer
and it prints with no problem so I know that the drivers are not an issue. Can anyone tell me how to get the netbook to print across the wireless network?

DB:2.58:Having Problem Setting Up Network Printing s7

    Hi yakfisherman,
I would suggest you to follow these steps and check if the issue is resolved.
    1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the
Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

    2. Click Add a printer.
    3. In the Add Printer wizard, click
Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
    4. In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click
Next. (If your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for your domain are displayed in the list.)
    5. If prompted, install the printer driver on your computer by clicking
Install driver. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    6. Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click
    Finish.

I would suggest you to check if the security software is blocking the access to the network printer. You may temporarily disable them and check and enable after you able to access the printer.

    Hope this information helped!

    hi
"back to when i first installed a fresh copy"
    how didyou install it?
    your question is confusing

do you mean back to how you bought it?

if so this should apply to your netbook
as it is a netbook you do not have a dvd drive except for some asus modelsetc

ask themanufacturers if you have a recovery partition on your hard drive to put it back to how you bought it
you should have a recovery partition

you would normally press F10 or F11 or Alt + F10 or 0 at boot to start the recovery process depending on the manufacturer

ask them for the exact key sequence

and save all data as it will be lost during the process

I own a ACER ONE NETBOOK, windows xp was pre-installed when I bought it Feb. 2009.

My son was online and suddnely got a messageon the screen saying windows is shutting down and now when I turn on the computer it says... "Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

It gives me a couple of options to start in safe mode, last known good configuration, or start windows normally. I've tried all of these options and none of them are working. I have no idea how to fix this I tried the microsoft trouble shooting nothing worked.

I would greatly appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

You should choose "Last known good configuration " if are able to finally get in. What happens when you choose one of the safe modes? Do you receive any type of error messages? If so, post the complete error message in your reply.

Ok ... running Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix and the dongle is detected and Ubuntu allows me to set up a connection. But it always fails to connect when I try. Now in the settings for the connection for "Vodafone Top Up and Go" by default the connection dial string is *99#, username and password are blank and the APN is set to pp.internet.

Having done some research ... and looking at the connection settings under windows i changed the settings to *99***1#, username web, password WEB and APN pp.internet.co.uk. Still nothing :-(

I tried installing the VMC Lite software for Linux but I am getting the error : Dependency not satisfiable: hal

I can;t seem to find a fix for this on the internet .... but you really shouldn't need the Dashboard software installed to make a connection anyway.

I gave my kid an ASPIREONE D257 - 13478 brand new.

It came with Windows7 starter - was very slow, crippled, and crashed a lot.

After a while, I re-formatted the HARDDRIVE to remove Windows-resource-hog-7 , and I installed Windows XP Professional (SP3).

After which, the netbook was much faster, and I could browse with 5 browser-windows open (FireFox) , and NEVER reveive (NOT RESPONDING) like I was always getting with Windoze-7. It's been good for 5 months.

Anyways, it worked fine except, I could not find XP driver for the Broadcom wireless adapter [CODE 10],

so we haven't been using WiFi .

Today I read suggestion to update my BIOS to fix the [CODE 10} issue. I went to acer link and downloaded the BIOS on the wwebsite, RAN the EXE and the netbook went to reboot.

After the ACER logo appears, a QUICK Blue screen flashed, and the netbook RESTARTS again.

Asking me to start Windows Normally just repeats what happens above

When I choose Safe Mode.. the Drivers load until Mup.sys and then the system just RESTARTS agin.

When I try Last Known Good Configuration, same thing happens.

Going into System Setup Utility (F2) shows, System Bios Version: v1.15

    before it was v1.10.

    .................................................

So.. whats my next step ?

Will reformatting my HD and reinstalling WIndowsXP FIX this problem ?

    or

How can I RESET my Bios back to v1.10 (when everything was fine) ,

any software to use on a USB drive to fix this issue ? ( because theres no CD drive obviously )

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply Ace fintux.Things I did beforre I saw your reply.Made a copy of BartPE on a USB flash drive and added the BIOS Flash files.

    *instructions here: http://midtech.blogspot.com/2008/09/bartpe-on-usb-flash-disk-ufd.html

Loaded BartPE on the netbook and got into the desktop where I, RE-FLASHED the system with BIOS 1.10 by running the Windows file.

Restarted the netbook and was still having the REBOOTINg issue. So I went into setup [F2] and clicked F9 ( reset system defaults) .That didnt work.Went back into system setup [F2] and changed the HDD settings from what it was to AHCI mode ( just as I see you mentioned in your reply), and that worked. The kid is back in business and doesn't have to use the parents Laptop Thanks again. You had the right solution. Now all I need is a Broadcom network-card-driver for Windows XP to fix the the issue [CODE 10] , so we can use WiFi .

    DB:2.56:Where Can I Find A Netbook With A Linux Operating System... 19

    Hi there,

Linux on netbooks never really caught on and accordingly, it can be difficult to find one with it pre-installed. HP had one version on some of their HP Minis, but even they have moved almost exclusively to Windows 7. If you are looking for a netbook with Linux, your best bet will be to simply find the netbook you want and the load whatever flavour of Linux you like. Don't worry, the cost of the operating system on the netbook will not be the breaking point - the price difference in previous netbooks that I've seen has only been $20 or so.

Hello,I'm at a loss at the moment and hope to get a clear answer here.I'd like to use my BlackBerry Pearl 9105 as an internet modem to surf the internet on my netbook. This is my first time, as I have never tried to use it as an internet modem before. The netbook OS is Ubuntu 12.10. I also use Windows 7/8, but I prefer using Linux for the internet.I wanted to install the packet called "barry-util" which is a Linux alternative for BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The installation was successful. Unfortunately I don't know anymore how to establish a connection using the function called "modem tethering". The software found my smartphone, but the connection got failed and I don't know why, because I didn't understand/recognize the error message. To check if Windows is easier than Linux, I installed the Vodafone Connector in Windows 8. But the software didn't recognize a connected smartphone. In the manual I read that not each model supports dial-up networking. The second solution would be bluetooth. My smartphone could find my netbook, and vice versa. But this solution also failed, because I got an error: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.".What was wrong? Does it mean that my smartphone doesn't support tethering or dial-up networking? Has anybody once tried to use this smartphone as an internet modem? Thanks for your answers in advance.

in windows XP you can try:

    1. Select Start Settings Network Connections.2. Double-click the New Connection Wizard. New Connection Wizard will open.3. Click Next.4. Select the option Connect to the Internet. Click Next.5. Select Setup my connection manually. Click Next.6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem. Click Next.7. If the Select a Device screen appears, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box. Click Next.8. In the ISP Name field, type a name for your connection. Click Next.9. In the Phone number field, type * 99 #. Click Next.10. Indicate which users will have access to the connection. Click Next.11. Enter your user name and password provided by your service provider. Click Next.12. Click Finish.13. In the Connect window, click Properties.14. In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem appears beneath the Connect using heading, then click Configure.15. In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure all of the other boxes are not checked above. Click OK.16. In the Properties window, click OK

in Ubuntu, I can not try it but I've tried in XP and succeeded.... good luck

I remove USB drive go back to my desktop. I deleted the disk 1 files and coppied disk 2 files. Return to netbook and install usb stick. I click next and it does nothing. What is the accepted method for doing this? Is there a way to combine all 3 disks on the flash drive so that it will install seemlessly? Or at least the first 2 recovery disks as I believe the 3rd one is just the HP software which should not be a problem.

DB:2.55:How To Recover My Netbook 8j

20 years ago I would agree with you. The logical side of my brain says that this should be possible. If you can take a set of recovery disks and install them they automatically create 1 recovery partition on that hard drive. From that recovery partition, you can create a back up on a flash drive. The reverse should be true.

Although it may not be easy, I think that you could rip the DVD's and combine to a flash drive. I suspect that some file on there needs to be edited so that it will treat the recovery as on disk and not ask for the others.

I agree though that the easiest solution is to buy an external DVD drive. I like trying to do the 'impossible' to save buying something that I will very seldom use.
