    Check out this site -

Google gives plenty of hits for this error that are quite useful. If you still don't find the problem, try giving a little more detail about when/where you get this error, along with what version of Oracle you are using.

Is this on Windows (please include always OS information in postings)? If yes is a virus scanner installed, especially McAfee?
Another possible issue, which characterset? There's a problem with developer 6i and unicode charactersets.

    Hai All,

When I connect to a Oracle 7 database in the SCO-unix machine...I get ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure. How to connect to Oracle 7 as sys user or system...?

    Please help

    Shiju

    DB:5.07:Ora-12571: Tns:Packet Writer Failure 3f

From memory this was often due to environment variables not being set correctly.

Make sure the following are all correctly set:

    ORACLE_SID
    ORACLE_HOME
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH/SHLIB_PATH/LIBPATH (whichever SCO uses)

make sure you use svrmgrl rather than sqlplus and use connect internal rather than connect as sys or system.

I get the following error on an asp page accessing Oracle 9i server:

    I changed it to:

    Now it is working.

    Hi,

I am experiencing the following error on a Oracle client PC:
ORA-12571 : TNS Packet Writer Failure. The client PC cannot access any Oracle database, even by using Sql.
The networking environment seems to be 100 % OK.
Analysing the listener trace on the server did not help, nor did re-installing the Oracle client.

Any idea about the problem ?

    Hi,

We are currently facing user login error mentioned in the Oracle client log below.

Topology: WebService (FWSM-DMZ)- Oracle Database (FWSM-INSIDE)

The webservice fails to make full SQLNet connection to the database. But on subsequent attempt it goes through. I can recreate the error by doing 'clear local-host (on all source/destination IPs)' and doing user login again via web portal. SQLNet inspection was earlier disabled on FWSM. Later I enabled SQLNet inspection but still the same error. Most of the discussions related to ORA-12571 points to enabling fix-up/inspection of Oracle 1521 port.

I ran a capture on FWSM while below mentioned error occured, but I couldn't notice any non-SQLNet (other than 1521) communication initiated to the database. The error seems to be network related though.

Have you experienced this error ? What would you suggest ?

    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure at Datel.Eform.DataAccess.Portal.UserMgt.ValidateUserDA.ValidateUserLogin

DB:4.32:Ora-12571: Tns:Packet Writer Failure (Fwsm) zk

After further checking, I can see that presence/absence of sqlnet inspection has no effect on this.

However, something to do with connection table state.

If I clear local-host 'database server' and try login via web portal, the ORA-12571 exception takes place and on 'sh conn' a new connection is seen with status 'UBOI'. When I try login again, the connection goes through. So, due to the presence of earlier connection entry with UBOI, all subsequent logins work successfully. This scenario is consistent.

    Any hints?

You lost your connection to the instance. Could be a network problem,
intentional restart of the database, etc. Restarting the servers reconnects
to the database. You may want to look at another message thread in this
group on this issue. Has a couple of ideas of how to deal with it. Look for

We perform a cold backup (shutdown the instance, backup files to tape, then restart the instance) every weekend. Every Monday morning the first .NET application that uses ODP produces an "ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure" error. When the same application executes again (or any other ODP application), the error does not appear.

We are using version 9.2.0.2.102 of ODP. Is this a known issue and is there a fix for it?

You can call ClearPool or ClearAllPools on the connection object, which will recycle your pool. Most admins call this after they bounce the DB.

The other solution is to use RAC with Fast Connection Failover by setting HA Events = true in the connection pool. You must have RAC to use this attribute.

    Hi all,

Not sure where to post this, so trying for the general forum to start...

I have also searched and read all the forums for help on this already as well the Oracle documentation and anything I could find from several on-line searches, etc.

I have Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition and Oracle Forms 6i installed on Win2K. Everything worked fine when it was just Oracle 8i running, ie: connecting to the database in SQLPlus Worksheet, but when I try and connect to the database in the datablock wizard in forms I get the ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure error!

Don't tell me to re-install, I've done that like 6 times already. I've check the tnsnames.ora files and tried that fix already. I don't know what else to try short of fdisk and redoing everything from scratch again, but I don't have time for that as this machine is used daily for other tasks.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!!!

    Thx in advance!

PS: Note to Oracle support staff if you are listening (pardon the pun). Your one line of help for ORA-12571 in the existing support files is rather similar to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy's info for Earth... After seeing how many people have posted about this problem and how few resources or real answers there are out there, you might want to consider updating the info on this error, because is deserves something more than "mostly harmless"!

    Hi,

    I have installed Net8 and SQL*Plus from 8.0.5 on SuSE Linux 6.0.

I am running a Filenet application that uses Oracle 805 and I am getting this error. First of all, does anyone know what it means, and second, how can I fix it? My usual fix did not work. Thanks

Try enabling SQL*Net tracing and see if anything jumps out there.

    Many thanks
    Christian

    Hi Christian,

    Could you identify that issue?
I have the same problem, but without any network connection. (stand alone server as testarea)

    Hi all,
When I try to connect the DBA Studio (in the WIN 2000 SP 3), client of Oracle , the error message is
    "ORA-12571 : TNS : Packet writer failure."

But in the TNSNAME.ORA file is working fine. meaning SQL*Plus and other Oracle client can connect.

Only the GUI application(like DBA Studio, enterprise manager) are giving this error.

How can I solve this ploblem?

    Thanks.

    DB:4.02:Ora-12571 Tns : Packet Writter Failure 3j

yes I few more tnsnames.ora file other directory for other version and application.

For this same version HOME directory, only one file is there.
so, SQL*Plus is connecting by using this file , but not for GUI applications.(DBA studio,Enterprise manager)

I installed Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.20 and ran it in test with no problems. Go to Production and now I'm seeing this intermittent error show up. It only shows up the first time a user attempts to login. It works fine on reattempt and they can browse the web app with no issues. If they log off attempt to login an hour later, the ORA-12571 will reappear. Reattempt and everything is fine.

The database is Oracle 10gR2 RAC. Any ideas??

    Hi,

This is usually due to an improper sqlnet.ora setting. Here are some possible causes and remedies:

    - Loose network cables. This error has been observed when there was a loose cable connection to the SCSI disk array (on an Oracle Parallel Server system). Related errors were also subsequently noted in the NT event log.
    - IP address conflict (Oracle 9.0.1).
    - Authentication services. One solution is to edit the sqlnet.ora file and change the line:

    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    to
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)

    Try this solution.
btw. on internet is too many articles reg this error.

    Regards,
    Tom

    2. you can not open the standby database unless you open it in failover or swithover mode. once you open the standby database in read/write ,it will loose its identity. you will have to again re-build your standby. it has to be in the auto recovery mode at mount stage so that whatever changes happening at primary stage same will be appled at standby and are in sync.
acceptional when you come to 11g you can open the database in read mode and still you will be able to keep in auto recovery mode.

"TNS-12571:TNS:packet writer failure" and after that "ORA-01041 hostdef extention does not exist". All that happened when the import process tried to import data, which contained LOBs. I restarted and tried several times - same think.
    System: Win98 SE
    PO8i
Any help will be greathly appreciate.

I've recently installed the 8i Personal for NT and encountered the same packet writer failure message when logging on to the database that was created at install. I can log in to the system database with system/manager without specifying a host, but when I specify my sample database I receive this error. Any help would be appreciate.

I've seen there is another thread in this forum regarding
    "ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure"
caused by ODP.NET. But it seems a dead thread. So I post this new topic.

During normal utilization of database (without shutdown and restart of DB instance) from ASP.NET pages of web application, it happens (sometimes, it is not deterministic) that execution of
    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataAdapter.Fill (that executes Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.ExecuteReader)
    raises
[OracleException: ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure]

The version of ODP.NET I'm using is 9.2.0.2.102. Is there a known bug that affects ODP.NET and causes ORA-12571?

Thank to everyone that could help me

DB:3.61:Ora-12571: Tns: Packet Writer Failure c3

    Found that thread:

    ***
ODP.NET 920401 introduced the concept of validating a connection before giving it to an application. Of course, it is expensive and should be used wisely. An excerpt from the Readme:

ODP.NET has introduced a new connection string attribute "validate connection" that should be set to true in order to validate connections coming out of the pool. By default, this property is set to false.

Note that validation causes a round trip to the database for each connection coming out of the pool, which is very expensive in terms of performance.
Therefore, this attribute should be used only if absolutely necessary.

ORA-12571 indicates a broken connection between the Oracle client and the server. This could be (as Justin points out) due to a temporary network glitch or due to the death of a server process. In either case, the client side marks the connection as broken and in this case has cleaned up the assosciated data structures. Further operations return ORA-1041 as as result.
The only option at this point is to reestablish the connection to the server from your application or restart the application. Check any kind of memory leak, handle leak, etc. especially when you have a long running process.

If you weren't shutting down the database, this was probably a transient failure. If it recurs, you'll want to enable SQL*Net tracing to diagnose the root cause.

As far as shutting down the database before rebooting, if this is a production database, then you absolutely should be shutting down Oracle before rebooting. If this is a development database, it is probably less critical.

Doing an Enterprise version install and installing a copy of the general database, but during the db install I get the ORA-12571: TNS packet writer failure, and the db install fails.

Any clues as to how to overcome this.

    TIA
    Bryan

I bought a PE licence Oracle 8i 8.1.5 for WinNT. After I installed the database and created some tables, I experienced some problems: I run some SQL queries with SQL*Plus. After a couple of minutes the database became inaccessible: First I got
Error ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure. When I tried to run the same SQL again, I received ORA-01041: Interner Fehler: hostdef-Erweiterung existiert nicht (now it's German: internal error: hostdef-extension doesn't exist). After shutting down SQL*Plus and restarting it, I received ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced.
It happens all the time. It'd no problem with the SQL, because the same SQL worked properly before (it was just a select * from table;).
    Who can help?
I'm not sure, whether this is the right discussion forum, but didn't find a better one.

DB:3.55:The Vmware Virtualcenter Server Service 2.5.0.64192 Terminated Unexpectedly m3

I appreciate the suggestions but we have tried all the simple stuff like that we can think of. The real issue is that the 12571 error is such a generic Oracle error that it could be almost anything. The machines are on the same subnet so we aren't firewalled and the network shouldn't be an issue but that is about the last thing we need to check. Simply because the error code given basically states that the DB was not available at the time it tried so it quits.

For the time being we set the service to restart immediately after it goes down so at the very least it should go back up pretty quickly, but it will still interrupt backups or anything that might be going. We did a trace in the Oracle client and are currently going through that to see if we can find anything.

To answer your questions we checked all updates to the client (10.2.0.4) and rebuilt the system DSN to ensure it was using the 10.2.0.4 ODBC client - what specific settings would you suggest I check in the ODBC client that would be different between 9i and 10g? Realize that this ran for a year with no issues on 9i - we just don't want to fail back to it if we don't have to.

Hello everyone! I really need urgent help here!

    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException ORA-12571: Packet writer failure

The real issue is that this error doesn't show eveytime, it only shows when the user opens the page, wait some minutes and makes the operation. When the user opens the page and immediatly makes the operation, everithing goes well.

I have tried everything: reistall the client, try with the Web site in another server, disabling the antivirus in the server and specifying the database server in TSNAMES.ORA file. Nothing works! The error keeps displaying eventually!

    What else can I do?

    DB:3.40:Re: Oracle Db Problem 8d

    Hi Ravi

Metalink note 304625.999 discuss a similar issue. Few possibilities that were discussed include

    1. The OS account responsible for starting Oracle Service not having proper privileges.
    2. Some Antivirus software causing this.
    3. Some Third Party Backup Tool.

Wish I could help you more but I can't. Someone will take over from here.

    Hi there!

At least a few times a day i get ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure errors, my sqlnet.log looks like:

    VERSION INFORMATION:
TNS for Linux: Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
TCP/IP NT Protocol Adapter for Linux: Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production
    Time: 12-OCT-2009 22:57:50
    Tracing not turned on.
    Tns error struct:

    TNS-12571: TNS:packet writer failure
    ns secondary err code: 12560
    nt main err code: 530
    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
    nt secondary err code: 9

My OCCI client multithread via pthreads and build against 10.2.0.4 client and my database is 9.2.0.8

I've check my environment, specifically firewalls, and confirmed they arn't closing sockets, or dropping out of state packets etc..

I had through it was I build my environment without the THREADED_MUTEX, but since changing this it still happens (prehaps less often)..

On occasion my app will core dump, no doubt relating to code not handing this error properly.

I havent anything relavent from google/metalink on this error..

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers

When we try to compile a large function from windows client (Toad or sqlplus) in a database (Oracle 11g) installed on a Red Hat server, we receive the following

When we try to compile the same function from sqlplus in the server, we haven't any problem, even from other Linux server in the same network.

I have a 9.2.0.1 database running on windows 2003 server. I created a linked server on another mssql 2012 using 11g 64bit client. I run a job on the mssql server using openquery connect to oracle for checking the connection status every 2 minutes. Then, I found the openquery gets "ora-12547 tns lost contact" error iintermittently. The error occurs few times a day. The query is just to return sysdate "select * from openquery(orc, 'select sysdate from dual')". And some others openquery may get ora-12571 tnd packet writer failure. Can any export instruct me how to resolve this issue?

    Hi

We are using Oracle 9i database for an ASP.NET 2.0 application . ODP.NET (9.2.0.401) is used to connect to the Oracle DB.

    Hello,

I've been trying to install Oracle 8i on a Windows 2000 Pro workstation that is a member of a Windows 2000 domain. All my work is local to the workstation that the Oracle DB is installed on. My first attempt was successful until I shutdown the computer and then I lost the ability to connect to the database again. Then I started getting these ORA-12571 and ORA-03113 errors. I tried to reinstall and it didn't work. I went on the Boson Forum but did not find a solution to the problem.

I was wondering if there is a patch that addresses this issue and where could I download it from? Is there a general download area of patches for the Oracle 8i database somewhere?

    Thank you kindly,
    Arie Rechtschaffer.

    DB:3.25:Ora-12571 And Ora-03113 Errors. 3a

This can have many causes. I found one at Metalink that can be your problem:
    Problem Description
    -------------------
SQLPlus 8.0.x client connections fail with the following error:
    ORA-12571 'TNS:packet writer failure'
    Solution Description
    --------------------
The problem lies in the tnsnames.ora file. Oracle Net8 can raise this
error when there is a parenthesis mismatch in the tnsnames.ora file.

    For example:

    oef =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = 97.25.134.298)
    (Port = 1521)
    )
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = oef)
) ====== Note the missing parenthesis
    boela =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = 97.25.134.299)
    (Port = 1521)
    )
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = boela)
    )
    )
) =========== Note the incorrect inclusion of the missing parenthesis

The above example shows incorrect syntax. Correcting the parenthesis mismatch should
    resolve the ORA-12571 error.

If this is not your problem, let us know to find something else.
