It's simple. Vista uses a lot of ram. 2 gigs is the minimum, but I would recommend 3 or possible 4 gigs.

    Hi,

    Thank you for posting.

Based on my research, I would like to suggest trying the following to narrow down the issue:

    1.    Please check the following:
    1)    Your motherboard supports the amount of RAM.
    2)    Both the 2 RAMs are compatible with the motherboard and they can work together.

Note: you can get the information from the manufacture

    2.    Please let me know if you can enter the computer Boot screen after adding the RAM. If you can enter the BIOS, please reset the BIOS. If there is a upgrade for the BIOS, you can try it.

    3.    If you can get the Boot screen, please press F8 and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic to see if there is some error.

If the issue persists, it is recommended that you contact your computer’s support for advice and help on adding the RAM.

Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Some of the new comps at futureshop have 3GB RAM specs... any 32-bit OS can only utilize only 2GB and the rest goes to the kernal (useless) and not to mention that most applications and games are only optimized for 2GB of ram AND shouldn't there be an even number of ram sticks or ram like 2GB, 4GB, 8GB to achieve Dual Channel (up to 70% faster read/write buffer) which leads to my question... Why would HP or compaq put 3GB of ram?

    DB:2.72:3gb Of Ram? 33

Funny, I haven't seen any customers revolting... Futureshopdoes sell the 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista. If you read the retail box of vista it tells you "Contains 32 and 64 bit versions".

    Hello,

    I have a Satellite P100-264, running Windows Vista SP1 with nVidia's GeForce Go 7600.

I 've upgraded it's RAM memory to 4GB but it keeps crashing or displaying a blue screen after a while.

However, removing 2GB ram OR uninstalling nVidia drivers makes everything OK again.

Which leads me to the conclusion that, nvidia drivers can't handle 4GB of RAM.

4GB RAM + nVdia drivers = Blue Screen

4GB RAM + Standar VGA Display drivers = OK

    2GB RAM + nVidia drivers = OK

Is there any known solution? I've already tried several different display drivers, both official and unofficial.

Please help. I can't stand having 2GB of ram just sitting there... =p

    Hi BUD85

Are you noticing a Performance issue with the new Index numbers? If not, I would not be too concerned with the decrease in Index. If you have different speeds of RAM in the system, the System will default to the lower Speed, so if you have two that are 6400
and two that are 5300, the two 6400 DIMMS will slow down to the 5300 speed, which may be why your index has decreased.

Safe mode only loads a minimal set of drivers and disables all startup items (non-system ones, obviously).

So, it sounds like there's an issue with either some 3rd party driver loading, or possibly an application at startup.

You can check msconfig to see what's schedule to start up.

    Hi,

Welcome to Windows Vista answers community.

It looks like you are using 2GB and 1GB on your laptop where 1GB RAM is not getting recognized. I would suggest you to remove 2GB RAM and check if 1GB RAM is getting detected.

    2) Try to perform a memory diagnostics from WinRE mode
    a) Insert the Vista DVD, and boot from the DVD.
    b) As you want to boot the computer from the Windows Vista DVD, you need to press a key, on your keyboard when you see the prompt. You should now see a black screen with a white status bar at the bottom stating Windows is loading files.... After a
while, the status bar will turn completely white and you will see a screen stating that Windows is loading. The Windows Setup environment will continue to load and when finished you will be presented with a screen that prompts you for information about your
    location and language.
    c) At this screen you should configure the Language to install, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method options so that they are set correctly. When done, press the Next button. You will now be at the main Windows Vista setup screen
where you would normally install Vista on to a computer.

    d) As we want to repair the computer, you should click on the Repair your computer option. This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented
with the System Recovery Options dialog box
    e) Select the Vista installation you would like to repair

    f) From the system recovery options, choose memory diagnostics and check if any errors in the RAM are listed.

If you find that RAM is faulty, I would suggest you to contact your laptop manufacturer’s to get a replace.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

DB:2.60:Any Successful 2 X 2gb Ram Sticks In Mbp? zz

Now there's a trade-off I would not make. Most of the incredible speed of the iMac and MacBook Pro come from the 667 MHz memory speed.

I have a system with 400 MHz RAM and when running some nominally CPU-intensive code on a 3 GHz Linux system (the code is single threaded, so dual processor Mac vs. HyperThreading Linux box is not probably an issue, and it's Java, so the direct speed comparison should be meaningful), the Mac beats the Linux box byget this~50%!

In other words, the speed difference is all about the RAM speed. The processor is often waiting for data, and that makes the RAM and the interface to it the bottleneck. At least with today's processor architectures. Some of what I've been reading about the next generation of Intel processor suggests that they're improving the efficiency with which the CPU access main memory, but still, for the foreseeable future, RAM will be the limiting factor in raw performance, as it has been for quite some time, now.

DB:2.60:Video Player Froze Up Vista 37

    Hi kakagol,

    Welcome back.

Try updating the Windows Media Player by visiting the windows update site. I'm adding additional steps to change the hardware acceleration or turn off video acceleration.

To downlaod and install the update, visit the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941651
Once the update is installed, do visit the windows update site and check if there is any other update available for Windows Media Player.

If the problem affects all or most of the video files you play (as opposed to just a few specific files), the driver software for your video card (also known as a display adapter, video adapter, graphics adapter, or graphics board) might be out-of-date. Check
for updates for the driver software for your video card and for updates to Microsoft DirectX by doing the following.
    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

    2. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

    3. If any updates are found, click Install updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In some cases, you might need to download the driver software directly from the website of your computer manufacturer or video card manufacturer.
If updating your driver software doesn't solve the problem, try reducing (or turning off) video hardware acceleration by doing the following.

    1. Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

    2. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.
Note that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.
    3. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware.

For your reference, I'm adding a link that talks about troubleshooting video play issues on windows media player.
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/3519fc03-7f06-476f-a553-dcb5d4284e191033.mspx

My ram in my homebuilt system is overclocked...most Dell deesktops (and all laptops), you can not overclock the RAM.

The RAM you linked to will be fine.

Any DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM stick would work with no problems. Usually Dell is more expensive to buy from.

I could never get Vista RC1 or previously, Beta2, to install on my system with the full 4gb of DDR Ram. Would install ok with 2gb, but then still wouldn't run with 4gb. Haven't tried 64bit, which I suspect may, but XP will work, and install, with that amount.
Any one have any experience with RC2 and more than 2gb of ram?

Use Cruicial for quality memory. I've been using them for many years. As far as the 512 module, once you replace it there really is not much value or use for it unless you know of someone who has an open slot in their laptop otherwise its has little value.

With Vista coming soon, promising to support additional (i.e. more than 2GB) ram and new motherboards arriving I am seeing alot of personal computer specifications for up to 8GB of ram. All of the Mobos I have noticed thus far are supporting DDR2 and only 4 DIMM slots. Since I haven't seen anything like this yet it begs the question: Where and when is it (2GB sticks) coming? Since attaining 8GB would only be possible with 2GB sticks (X4) I assume they are on the horizon?

You'll probably have to wait a little bit, anyways.

    Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a NICE Compaq Presario F730US laptop with a fresh install of Vista Home Premium. It seems to be doing alright, save for a few little things, but people have been (literally, everyone) telling me I should upgrade it to Windows 7. Which, I would be OK with doing, as an Upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium is $90 on Amazon right now, but I don't know if I have enough RAM. I have 1 GB installed, and want to install more, but the problem is, according to Crucial, the most the computer supports is 2GB, correct? I mean, that seems to be enough to run Vista adequately, (it does good on 1 GB, honestly, but the RAM is anywhere between 50-90%, usually 80+% with programs running) but I read that Windows 7 requires 1 GB to run by itself. If that's the case, 2GB seems hardly enough (Vista is a 32-bit OS installed on here, and 7 would be 32 bit as well) Can this laptop run more than 2GB? I don't know why they are "limited" on RAM, seems like a type of thing there really isn't a need to limit. If 2GB is the absolute most it can take, will 2GB run Vista Home Premium, or is it best to leave it with Vista? I've heard a lot of horror stories about Vista, while everyone seems to love 7. I checked the Support/Drivers section, and there hasn't been a BIOS update in almost 3 years, so it's the original one that is currently on the computer.

    Thank you everyone.

p.s., while I'm at it, can this laptop take a bigger hard drive? 250, 320, 500GB? Are there any specifics in that category?

    Thanks.

If you decide to go with Windows 7, don't worry about drivers. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how many are natively supported in 7 ,and even more are offered through Windows Update.

I installed Vista 64-bit under Tiger on this box, with an early beta version of BootCamp and had to dig up my own 64-bit drivers. Got it working. Migrated to Leopard (default install no less) and updated to new BootCamp.

I have installed Windows Vista 64bit onto my machine. I had been experiencing BSODs prior to this installation, so I removed one stick of ram (1x2GB) from my mobo. After this removal, Vista installed successfully with absolutely no problems.

After installation, I attempted to install the 2GB ram stick back into my machine. After I booted up, I was prompted with a Blue Screen of Death. After removal of this second 2GB ram stick, Vista loaded perfectly fine.

I am now running with only 2GB of ram in my machine. There are no errors. Vista is working perfectly. But as soon as I insert the other 2GB ram stick back onto the mobo, I am prompted with BSODs.

Hi, I saw this request quite late....maybe in case this doesnt help Om, it will at least help people who are facing this problem.

I had the same problems as Om, and i decided to upgrade my laptop to the fullest extent.

    Here is what I did:

    1) I made a clean install of windows 7 32bit, with my existing hardware. I backed up all my data, and made three partitions of my existing hard disk. With the C-drive as approx 40 gb and the rest two partitions with approx 35 GB each. This was necessary as windows 7 would take up a lot of space and then installing softwares would again require additional space. The OS was running ok but it was a bit sluggish. So i decided to go for a RAM upgrade.

    2) I checked for the maximum ram supported by my laptop (V6211 AU) and its 2 GB.

    3) I searched for a compatible ram with a valid cash bill and warranty. The HP guys have a terrible support on new hardware and they tell you that you have to order a spare part, which takes a lot of time. The best way around was to go for a good branded compatible ram with a warranty. (Transcend or Hynix provides you the same) Please dont go for refurbished rams or rams extracted from old laptops, they would not help you in anyway. Even HP rams are not branded and they are from some other company totally( I understood this when I opened up my ram slot)

    4) The compatible rams that I found was 2GB DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) and 1GB DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300). I decided to try for a single 2GB ram because of the fact that I was getting that cheap. It was of Transcend make. The shop owner fitted that across into my slot and voila!!! It worked...! My Windows 7 detected the 2GB ram on a single slot. However the shop owner said that the existing 512 MB ram should not be fitted across the other slot, as this might not be detected or else there might be a bootup problem. I kept the 512 existing ram as a backup, just in case the 2GB ram fails some day, I shall be able to fit that across and use it until I get one more ram replacement or a new ram in case the warranty period is over.

Thats it....post upgrade, my laptop feels like new, with all new good interface of window 7 and an upgraded RAM of 2GB.

Hello not sure if this is an issue with my new RAM modules or my OS. I am slowly upgrading my old Dell Optiplex 740 for my son to play some MMO games on. It came with 1gb of ram stock, after adding a new GPU, I installed a 2gb stick of RAM. All was good my system read 3 gb of ram. After noticing a few slowdowns during gameplay I decided to add another stick of ram. I purchased the same Crucial 2gb stick and installed it. My system still reads 3gb of ram. A system detection program i use to determine if this PC can run certain games also reads 3gb of ram. Ran the msconfig file and made sure MAXRAM box was unchecked, it was. Went into BIOS and it reads the two 2gb sticks and the 1gb stick for a 5gb total. My motherboard is still stock and it's specs say that it's four ram slots can hold, at ,most, 4 x 2gb of ram for an 8gb system total. But my OS is only reading 3gb of the 5gb installed. I have gone in and removed them one and a time and it read them all at their spec'd RAM total, 2gb/2gb/1gb. If I go two at a time no mater which 2gb stick i use partnered with the 1gb stick it reads 3gb. BUT if I try to use the two 2gb sticks it only reads 3gb

    Crucial RAM purchased is:

    Hi Tropic_Lightnin,

First of all I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems getting your system to pick up the full amount of memory.

It sounds like it's possibly a limitation with your operating system. Do you know if you have a 32bit or a 64bit version of Windows? A 32bit version of Windows will only see between 3-3.5GB of memory in total.

I have checked your computer model and you are correct this system can support 8GB in total but it does sound like it's being limited by the operating system.

To check if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista, you will need to: - Click on the Start button - Right click on Computer - Select Properties from the drop down menu - In the System Information page, next to System Type, it will tell you if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.

If you have anyfurther questions then please don't hesitate to ask and we would be more than happy to help.

DB:2.54:Not All Of My Ram Is Exposed In Vista X32... 79

You should have less issues with Vista 63 bit than you did with XP 64bit. XP 64-bit has widely had driver issues across many hardware platforms and it's not isolated to apple computers.

Also, as for you RAM issue. There was an issue with the kernel for 32bit XP and Vista that prevented it from utilizing all that RAM.

One last comment, unlike the last person, I would not suggest Windows 7 64-bit. The 64-bit edition is still very flaky and much more unstable than the 32-bit of Windows 7.

You can use Windows 7 32-bit and you will be able to use all of that RAM. In the 32-bit edition of Windows 7 they fixed the kernel issue that prevented XP and Vista 32-bit editions from using more than 2 or 3gb of RAM.

We are having to make do and defer hardware purchases. We have tried to add RAM to a Latitude D610 to improve user performance. There is a 2GB stick plus a 512K stick. It seems that A06 (10/12/2005) is the most recent BIOS version. BIOS only recognizes 2GB. Windows recognizes 2.5GB, but states can only use 2GB.

Is there anything that can be done so that it could recognize the 2.5GB or even 4GB ( 2 x 2GB), within the 32 bit windows limitations of course?

DB:2.52:Latitude D610 - Can It Recognize More Than 2gb Ram? zp

What you are saying is totally wrong. You can mix memory sizes in any machines as long as you dont go over the max memory of the system board or the max memory of the slot. you can also mix memory speeds as long as both speeds are with in the specification of the board. what will happen here is all the memory will run at the slower speed. Now there is a type of memory that use to be like that where you needed to have the exact same size and speed in each slot. That was call RDRam (Rambus memory) and I have built those type of computers before too.

PLEASE DONT ANSWER QUESTIONS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

If you would like to know how I know this I have been working on computer, laptops, and servers for 15 years. I am A+ certified and worked for IBM for 4 years. Plus I use to sell computers on the side. I have built over 500 computers myself not counting the computers I have worked on for my jobs.

The Memory Max limit is a hardware limit, so no. You cannot use two 2GB sticks of RAM. Your system would recognize it, but you would crash. Often.

DB:2.51:Boot Disc Failure Resulting In Blue Screen Error Code 07b z9

It would have been helpful if you'd quoted the Stop Error completely and exactly. If you are indeed getting "boot disk failure" and not something else, then most probably the hard drive has failed. You will not be able to recover the hard drive - it will
need to be replaced - but you may be able to get the data.
IMPORTANT - If there is any question that the drive is at fault - it's making noises for instance - and the data is crucialDO NOTHING FURTHER ON THE DRIVE . Every time you spin that
drive up you may be destroying data. If this is the case, send the drive to a professional data recovery company. I useDriveSavers for my clients, but there are others. General prices run
from $700-$2,400. I understand that some insurance companies are now covering data recovery costs so check with your insurer. Homeowner's/renter's insurance policies will have the coverage under "Loss of Intellectual Property"; business insurance policies
will have the coverage under "Business Interruption".

    Drive Savers -
    http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/
Sending the drive to a professional data recovery company is always the first choice in terms of getting back your data. If you are unable/unwilling to spend the money, then you can try one of the following methods to retrieve your data from outside of Windows.Again,
please bear in mind that if the drive is physically failing you do take the risk of losing all data every time it spins up.
    1. Pull the drive and put it in a USB drive enclosure or use a USB drive adapter. Attach this to a computer running a working install of XP/Vista/Windows7. Use the working Windows Explorer to copy the data to the rescue system's hard drive and then burn
the data to cd or dvd or copy it to an external hard drive. I prefer not to do this if I know the drive is infected because there is a chance of infecting the host system. In these cases, I use #2 below.

    2. You can boot the target computer with a Bart's PE (XP only) or a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix or Ubuntu and retrieve the data that way. This has the additional advantage of telling you whether the problems you're having are hardware or software-related
because if the computer behaves perfectly under Linux you know that Windows (software) is the culprit. Conversely, if the computer misbehaves under Linux you will know that there is a hardware problem. Here is general information on using Knoppix for data
retrieval when you can't get into Windows:

You will need a computer with two cd drives, one of which is a CD/DVD burner
OR a USB thumb drive with enough capacity to hold your data
OR an external USB hard drive. Download the Knoppix .iso and create your bootable CD*. If you are doing this in an older operating system (XP or Vista), you'll need third-party burning software like Nero, Roxio, or the freeImgBurn
(Windows 7 can burn .isos natively). Burn as an image, not as data. Then boot with the CD you created and the Windows files will be visible in Linux. If you want to burn CD/DVDs, there will be a Linux burning program to use.

*If your computer only has one optical drive and you want to use that drive to burn data or need to test the drive, you can create a bootable USB thumb drive running Linux instead of a bootable CD. This website will show you how to do that -http://www.pendrivelinux.com

    Hello,

    Thank you for your posting.

According to your post, you have tried to run Windows Vista after removing 2GB memory chip and system works well. Therefore, I suspect damaged hardware rather than a Windows Vista issue. We are not the best resource in hardware troubleshooting.

I highly recommend you to ask a hardware professional to help you. If all the devices are brand new, you may contact the manufacturer or seller to check this for you.

Note: In case of possible loss, please backup all your important data before troubleshooting the hardware.

Just for your reference, I offer you some simple steps in order to narrow down the problem’s scope:

    1.    Please confirm whether you’ve correctly install the memory chips, please refer to the following article:http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid68_gci1078301,00.html
    2.    Try to use each memory in each memory slot to run the system, try to find out which one is damaged.
If I misunderstand anything or you still have questions on this topic, please let me know.

    Regards,
    Lionel Chen

Any better for gaming than 2.x? I'm running first generation Mac Pro with an ATI 4870, 8 GB RAM. Under boot camp it runs fine however as most of you know, 1st generation Mac Pro can't run 64bit Windows w/o a ton of hacks, which I don't know of... So I'm limited to 2gb RAM under boot camp

I installed Windows 7 64bit under fusion 3.0 and I'm all 5.9s except gaming graphics, which is 3.7, that doesn't cut it. Upon review and reflection it appears I might get a better DX 9 experience under Vista anyway as Windows 7 was targeted at DX 10 or higher.

With all of that said... any of you running Vista 64bit under Fusion 3 with an ATI card and getting good gaming graphics?

    Thanks

With that MB and CPU in your list if you install four modules you should be running them at DDR533 or DDR667 and set the memory Voltage to 2.0 Volts.

I have an Windows XP (32bit) machine with 4GB of RAM. I need to be able to do some simpletesting under VISTA and take some screen shots using the VISTA interface and will need to have the VISTA VM running most of the time. If I were to add an additional 2GB to the physical machine, would the VMWARE player be able to use that memory and still leave me with 4GB for my XP applications?

    Thanks,

I have a macbook pro with 2GB RAM. I want to upgrade RAM to 4GB. I have 2 questions.

    1. Which brand of RAM is most suitable for macbook pro? I have been to macsales.com and they have OWC, SAMSUNG, etc.

    2. Does upgrading RAM by ourselves voids the apple warranty?

    Thanks,

for any recent sales. I bought 2-2 GB of crucial ram (Micron) for $65 + $30 rebate = $35. the Micron was an exact swap of the original.

Looks like 4 GB is the maximum that your MBP will accept. Do the upgrade, its not expensive and will help on heavy duty applications.Ciao

    Hello,

I have a Toshiba A2-15 running on Windows Vista Home Premium (2GB with a 200GB disc), which is a great computer for surfing the web and using office apps, but I need it to handle a lot more in terms of workload.

I'm considering expanding it's RAM, but I need to know one thing first. In the FAQ section it says that if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows - which I am - your OS may only recognise 3-3.5GB max. Here's where I'm confused. Does this mean there is 1-1/2GB of RAM wasted, or 1-1/2GB of RAM annexed to run devices and sound cards and such?

Isn't that 1-1/2GB that would be used by my 2GB RAM anyway?

Is it a waste or just a perceived waste?

I read several times that I can install 4gb ram in this laptop (2 2gb) but it only works with 2gb.

    http://www.corsair.com/configurator/system_results.aspx?id=63820

    I bought it here:

    http://www.speichermarkt.de/show.cgi?ID=toshiba_satellite_a_200_1_cr_a_200_1_cc.htmSNO=00000886

I know that the Toshiba website says it would only accept max. 2gb.

Both 2gb ram work, I tested both of them seperate. Also 2gb plus 512MB won't work. So is it true that it only accepts 2gb? I run Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Thanks a lot for your help! I'm almost about to send the other 2gb ram back, but I would really like to make it work!

I don’t know why some dealers provide a wrong information. Maybe you should ask such dealer.

But you should not forget that single notebooks supports with different hardware specifications and are equipped with different chipsets.

Some Intel chipsets support 4GB RAM and some can handle only 2GB RAM

However, you notebook doesn’t boot up because it can not handle 4GB RAM

DB:2.50:2gb Of 4gb Ram Is Eaten Up When Upgrade From Vista 64. x8

I installed Windows 7 64bit on two partitions. The first one, a fresh install, Computer Properties shows 4gb RAM. In Resource monitor, it showed 2mb is for 'hardware reserved', the rest 4096mb is divided among the working functions. The second one, I upgraded from Vista 64, it shows 4gb RAM (2usable). Resource monitor showed 2094mb (nearly 2gb) is for 'hardware reserved', only 2gb is for the rest. I heard the story about Memory Remap, my mainboard didn't have it. However, the first case, it automatically recognize 4gb RAM, I guess Windows7 manages everything. Is there anyway to 'turn on' the rest 2gb in the second case?  (how to 'take back' that 2gb for 'hardware reserved' ?) Thanks.

DB:2.50:2gb Of 4gb Ram Is Eaten Up When Upgrade From Vista 64. x8

I think your system is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. The specifications at http://supportapj.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1530/en/OM/HTML/specs.htm#wp1102222 suggest that the memory remap setting does not exist. If it doesn't, the video memory and system BIOSes for the various devices will take up, as hardware reserved, part of the 4GB address space and only the remainder will be available for Windows and applications.

DB:2.50:Will 4gb Of Ram Help Speed Up Vmware Fusion? pm

    Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum. I'd appreciate whatever advice anyone can offer me.

I have a Macbook Pro which can be upgrade to 4Gb of ram. Currently I have 2GB. When I run windows Vista in VMware Fusion, with 1GB of ram allocated to it, Vista is a bit slow. If I added another 2GB of ram to my laptop and allocated 2GB of ram for Vista under VMware fusion, would that help things along?

Is anyone in a similar situation?

    Thank you in advance!

    Terry

DB:2.50:Will 4gb Of Ram Help Speed Up Vmware Fusion? pm

Yes. Vista runs much better with 2GB and I could tell the difference when I upgraded my Macbook Pro from 2GB to 4GB.

    Hello

Do you have Vista 32bit or 64bit?

First of all Vista 32bit is not able to handle 4GB of RAM. 32bit OS have a limitation and they can only use ~3GB of RAM.

I have been having frequent kernel panics with my MPB. I have 2GB of RAM that came pre-installed from the factory. This seems to happen most often when I am using external firewire drives. Has anyone out there had similar problems?

DB:2.49:Frequent Kernel Panics With Mpb 2.0 With 2gb Ram a1

I have had the same problem ever since I opened the box with my brand spankin new MBP. Day 1 gave me several KP's (dark curtain, 4 languages), so I repaired permissions, ran tech tool, ran hardware test, and received 4MEM/1/40000000 within 3 seconds. Sent the machine back, Applecare replaced the logic board, sent it back, same issue after 1 day use and 1 night sleep with system left on. Now they have 2 sticks of RAM on the way to me. If the two sticks don't solve the problem, they'll just have to send me a new machine piece by piece until they realize it will be cheaper to just melt this one down and send a whole new one...
