I just ordered a second DVR for the other room. If your TV has component inputs then using component and audio cables will give the best picture (and let you watch the HD channels even though you do not have an HD TV). If the TV does not have component inputs, then either an S-video or composite and audio connection.

Did the Verizon installer not connect the DVR to the TV? Should have. And you should have received an instruction booklet with the DVR, it contains connection diagrams for various scenarios, including yours.

I know this for a fact as I did it for about a month when I first got FiOS TV, and seeing the HD channels, even on the SD TV, is what convinced me to go out and spend a bunch of money on an HD TV.

What is the best way to connect my HD DVR to my HD TV and my non-HD DVD player/recorder. Occasionally, I use the DVD player/recorder to burn a DVD from something I've saved on the DVR. I thought of connecting the DVR to the DVD via an HDMI cable, then run an HDMI cable from the DVD player to the TV but I don't know if I lose the HD signal by passing it through the non-HD DVD player.

Another thought was to connect the DVR to the TV via an HDMI cable, then connect the DVR to the DVD using the old red/white/yellow cables (forgot what they are called) and then connect the DVD to the TV via an HTMI cable or another red/white/yellow cable.

I have my HR23 connected to my display with HDMI cables as well to my Mac (same display) using El Gato EyeTV video capture hardware/software. when I use my TV via HDMI I have no problems. When I use my Mac the first thing I get is the message (because the HDDVR was left on 1080i from watching on my display). all I have to do is press and hold the exit key. which will switch the RES from 1080i to 480p. and I can leave with that. since I can't use both at the same time, I don't need the converter.

DB:3.80:Transfer Recorded Programs From One Dvr To Another 31

    jeffdube,

As eluded to by other users, I stand by my initial response about the inability to transfer content from one DVR to another. And as discussed, copying content to a new internal(or external) hdd that is to be used in the same DVR is a completely different thing. In fact, I would guess that the procedure that Weaknees performs is akin to what another forum user posted recently regarding copying content from a failing external eSATA drive to a new external eSATA drive for use on the same DVR(see below for those instructions). So, it appears that whatever Weaknees is charging for can be done(probably "considerably cheaper", since the HDCLONE basic software the forum user used costs about $20) by yourself. However transferring content from the DVR's "internal drive" to another drive(for internal...OR...external usage) may not work with the instructions below.

Instructions for upgrading an external eSATA from an other forum user:

"I recently swapped a 1 TB Cavalry external E-SATA drive with 2 TB Cavalry E-SATA drive connected to an HR21-700 DVR and I was able to preserve the recorded content. If you are interested, here is the process I used.

    (1) Connect the new unformatted drive to the DVR and let the DVR format it. This is necessary to create the necessary 3 empty partitions the DVR expects to see.

    (2) Connect both drives to a PC. In my case I used a Windows 7 system that only had USB ports which is ok if you have enough time on your hands.

    (3) Use HDCLONE (or other cloning software) to copy the partitions:

    a) Partition 1 is 500mb swap file and you can ignore it

    b) Partition 2 is 15GB directory space - copy partition 2 on the old drive to partition 2 on the new drive. On my system this took about 20 minutes over the USB ports.

    c) Partition 3 is where the content is. copy partition 3 on the old drive to partition 3 on the new drive. At the end of the copy HDCLONE will offer to reorganize the space on the newer larger drive - I played it safe and said "do nothing". The process took 10 HOURs to complete so you may want to manage your downtime accordingly.

    (4) Connect the new drive to the DVR and restart the DVR - all of your programming should be there. I went from 50% free on the 1TB drive to 80% free on the 2TB drive, and we have not had any glitches on the new drive since. At this time it has been about 4 weeks of watching older content and adding newer content."

Each of the current set-ups has only one cable. For various reasons, I do not want a second cable installation. I do realize the limitations on the recording capabilities with only one cable. From what I understand from other posts, it is not a problem to only use one cable with an HD DVR and that the process is to indicate "single" tuner during set-up. Is this also true with a non-HD DVR receiver, and is the "single" tuner feature available on all DVR and HD DVR models? I assume both are, but I am just checking to make sure before the installer arrives.

I recently upgraded my bedroom TV from an old Magnavox 25" CRT TV to a 32" 720p HD Vizio. I've had an HD DVR hooked up to the Non-HD TV for about a year for the purpose of playing back shows via Whole Home from my other HD DVR hooked up to a 60" HDTV in another room.

After hooking up the new HD TV to the HD DVR and making the proper setting adjustments on the DVR settings menu (screen size, resolution, etc, etc) I discovered that the HD DVR is not broadcasting in HD.

I recorded a show on the problem DVR, and it played back in standard definition. However, if I play back a show recorded on my other DVR via whole home, the TV broadcasts the recording in HD just fine.

I've also re-set the problem DVR back to factory settings with no luck.

I've also swapped the two DVR's between TV's and the problem DVR does not broadcast in HD on my other HDTV.

Please don't tell me to unplug the DVR and hit the reset button... Been there, done that. I really think I need a replacement HD DVR.

I've got Comcast digital service with their HD package and am currently using a Motorola HD box without the DVR. It is connected to my television via DVI out to HDMI in on my T.V. Starting today, the non-HD channels are displaying limited color/greyscale. All the HD channels are displaying correctly. If I unplug the DVI-HDMI cable from either the rear of the Motorola unit or my television the problem is solved, however if I am watching and HD channel and switch back to a non-HD channel the problem returns.

Any thoughts? Bad Motorola box? I called Comcast, they were clueless.

DB:3.78:Problem With Non-Hd Channels On Motorola Hd Box W/O Dvr 38

"Off" embeds the 4:3 SD channels in a 16:9 HD signal, so everything comes to the TV as HD. That way the TV is always seeing an HD signal. It won't "invent" resolution that isn't there, but it will simplify the interface between the box and the TV.

However, I'm not sure we tried to duplicate it with an HD recording. We may have only tried to duplicate it with an SD recording. BTW, I have an SWM system. My question is how can I record an HD movie on my DVR and still watch shows on my non-DVR receivers?

    DB:3.71:Directv Cinema kx

The Cinemaplus channels are all On Demand and thus are only available to DVR's because the service requires a hard drive to download and store programming. Any programs downloaded to a DVR will be available for viewing on networked receivers. If the program happens to be a PPV selection, then you must start playback on the DVR and accept payment before the title will be available to a receiver.

If you go to channel 1101 on your DVR's guideand press select, then use the green button to surf all of the various on demand website's, you'll see why the receiver cannot carry all of this information, much of which is recorded on the DVR's hard drive.

Most area's have done away with a SD DVR.

If you can't find the channel lineup on the tab at the top of this web page, then the only one that can supply you one would be your local office since channel lineups and HD channels vary by the system and are not standard across Comcast.

Choolse the blue programming tab and choose channel lineup and see if the HD channels showup on one of the selections for your exact area.

Adding HD and a HD DVR would be in additon to your digital preferred package unless you change to a package that includes HD and a HD DVR.

I think I understand how the MRV works in general, but I can't seem to find an answer to 2 questions. My setup is a single HD-DVR plus a single non-DVR HD receiver. 1) I know you can select On Demand from the DVR receiver, which eventually gets recorded to the DVR. But can you also select ON Demand from the non-DVR receiver and have it also record on the DVR? If so, I presume it would then be available to either receiver. 2) Since both receivers have 2 tuners, it seems that you could record 2 live programs on the DVR and still watch athird live program from the non-DVR receiver. Is this true, or am I missing something?

    DB:3.68:Mrv And On Demand dp

Lets see, one at a time, but you've got it pretty well covered except the number of tuners.

    1. The HR receiver (non DVR) can schedule recordings on the DVR, including downloads from On Demand. After the download is well underway it can be viewed on any of the Whole Home boxes.

    2. Both the receivers do not have two tuners, only the DVR. However, you can indeed record two programs and watch a third live program from the non DVR receiver. At the same time you could watch a previously recorded program on the DVR.

That also might be fixed by doing the following

There is a special setup menu that you can enter, that is NOT part of the regular set to box menu settings. To get there:

Power off the Set top box - Select - Menu.

On STB's with no select or menu buttons, on the remote press STB Power OFF - OK - Menu.

You will see a white screen and an all text menu called USER SETTINGS. Use the arrow keys to move around.

Scroll down to a line that says "ADDITIONAL HDMI SETTINGS" and hit a right arrow to get into the next level of the menu

There is a sound setting called AUDIO OUTPUT It says AUTO Scroll to it and change it to L-PCM.

Exit out of the menus, power the unit off and power it on again

DB:3.66:Is It Possible To Connect An Hd-Dvr Box Up To A Non-Hd Tv? 81

Basically, you need to force the box to ONLY output 480i, no matter what the source is.

    Turn the box off

    Hit MENU

Change TV Type to 4:3 or 16:9, as needed (use left/right arrow)

Scroll down to YPbPr output and use left/right to change it to 480i (if the screen blanks, look at the display on the box. It will show the resolution. Just keep hitting the arrow until it shows 480i and the screen comes back.)

Hit POWER to get out of the menu, the POWER to turn it back on.

And when you get your replacement HDTV, repeat the above to change it back to 720p or 1080i.

    DB:3.62:Audio Issues ps

It sounds mainly like audio problems from the source, from Fox25. And the massive difference between the audio levels on programming and commercials is usually a symptom of a station that isn't investing enough effort in the audio side of its HD system. DD 5.1 audio will always be quieter than regular PCM stereo, it's a technical issue with the way the audio systems work. But here in DFW we had the same issue you are describing, the commercials on most stations were so loud compared with the audio on the programming it was almost painful. Then a couple of the station engineers got together and worked on the problem and now we really don't have this issue any more.

There's also the up-front cost of the new DVR, which seems to vary from little more than shipping charges, to the full $299 if you get it at a retail outlet. It seems to depend on your status with DirecTV and your skills as a negotiator. Only way to be sure is to call and see what kind of deal you can get. Whatever the final cost, it will include a dish upgrade and installation.
