I recently upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate from Win XP on my homebuilt Asus MOBO unit.
I can boot up and log on, but about 1-2 minutes into the session - the screen goes askew (sharp angle, repeating image) and I can not do anything. Keyboard and mouse 'appear' to lock up.

DB:3.29:Windows 7 Ultimate Hard Crash 1-2 Minutes After Start Up. Screen Goes Askew am

To access the System Recovery Environment in Windows 7, simply boot your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system; hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options menu. There you will see a new
option 'Repair Your Computer', select this option and hit 'Enter' on your keyboard.
If the problem persist, try booting into Safe Mode, boot your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system; hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options menu. Select Safe Mode.
Log in, click Start, type Device Manager, hit Enter
    Expand Display Adapters
Right click your Video card, click uninstall.
    Restart your system
Log in, click Start, type Device Manager, hit Enter
    Expand Display Adapters
    Right click your Video card
Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Note: Drivers on the Windows Update site are directly provided by hardware manufacturers. Microsoft tests drivers in various environments before they are published; however, we cannot guarantee all drivers will work on all hardware platforms as there are too
many different models, although their hardware ID are the same as the standard version. In some cases, due to hardware modifications by different manufacturers, the driver updates may cause some error.

    If it does not work on your issue, I'd suggest you installing the Vista driver in Compatibility mode. Remove and rescan that hardware device in Device Manager, right-click on the driver executable/installer file - Properties and select the Compatibility tab;
click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator.
    If the problem still persist,
    1) Detach all unnecessary peripheral devices from your computer, such as printers, scanners and removable storage devices.

    2) Restart the computer.
If the computer starts properly, then its an offending device attached to the system.
If you continue experience problems, log back in,
    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    User Account Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    5. Click OK.
    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.
If the problem continues to exist, I would suggest you power down your system, unplug it, open the system unit and check to make sure components such as your video card and memory are all seated properly.
If the problem is still persisting, try the following:
    1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD
    2. Restart your computer
    3. When asked if you want to boot from your DVD drive, do so.
    4. Choose your language, click Next.
    5. Click 'Repair your computer'
    6. Select operating system you want to repair.
    7. On the System Recovery window, click Memory diagnostics option
Restart your system, a scan of your memory of your memory modules will take place to check for any defects.

    Hi All,
I recently installed a load of updates onto my Business Windows 7 32bit PC but when i restarted I experienced an issue of Windows booting up fine, but when logging into my user account the screen goes black with a mouse pointer, i dont see anything else.
After using System restore and a lot of trial and error i determined that this update causes the problem.

Has anyone else got this issue and are there any fixes?

    Hi Mahesh,

    1. Yes i am able to boot to the logon screen - but when logging into my account the screen goes black with the mouse pointer shown and this can be moved around the screen.
    2. HP dx2400 Microtower.

I have installed the most up to date driver for the Intel Integrated G33/G31 Express Chipset (8.15.10.1912) and attempted to install the update again but i get the same problem as before.

The screen does not show anything (apart from the mouse pointer), even if i CTRL + ALT + DELETE to try to get into task manager. I can reboot the PC and successfully get into safe mode and use system restore to restore before the update was installed.
I have checked HP's webiste and the latest driver they have on site is older than the one found in windows updates.

    Hi there,

So, firstly: The screensaver has absolutely nothing to do it. It´s rather a driver problem and I suggest you to update your touchpad driver and touchpad software.

A better idea would be to deinstall everything which has to do with the touchpad and then install the latest version of that software.

Another good idea would be to update ALL existing drivers in your system and do all system updates (windows-related).

If so could you please try doing what I had suggested earlier for uninstalling the current VMware Tools from the Win 7 virtual machine and then uninstalling Fusion 3.0.1 and then install Fusion 3.0 and check if the issue persists.

The below steps will help you:

First uninstall the VMware Tools by following the steps

    below:

    1. Go to Startgt;Control Panelgt;Programsgt;Programs

and Features. Select "Uninstall a program". Select VMware Tools from

the list and then click on "Uninstall".

    2. Reboot the virtual machine ( Do not reinstall the

    VMware Tools).

Now let us downgrade to Fusion 3.0 by following the steps

    below:

    1. Shut down all your virtual machines and then quit

    Fusion.

    2. Run the uninstall script located in

    /Library/Application Support/Vmware Fusion/Uninstall VMware Fusion.

    3. Delete the following folders or files:

    a. Mac

    HD/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion

    b. Mac

    HD/Library/Receipts/VMware Fusion.pkg

    c. Mac

    HD/Users/lt;usernamegt;/Library/Preferences/com.vmware.fusion.plist

    d. Mac

HD/Users/lt;usernamegt;/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion 4. Now restart the

    Mac.

    5. Now install Fusion 3.0 from the install CD or by

downloading it from the link below after putting in your VMware account

    details:

    https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/index.php?errorCode=AUTH-ERR-20001

    6. After installing Fusion install the VMware Tools in

your virtual machines. To install the VMware Tools you need to power on the

virtual machine and then go to Virtual Machinegt;Install VMware Tools form the

    top menu bar.

    Hello jlbffy,
Thank you for posting. When you booted into safe mode did you try the “Last known good configuration” option?
If not I would suggest you do so. If this does not work there are 2 options available to us to correct this issue, both involve booting with your Vista DVD.
If your system is an OEM machine and you were not provided a Vista DVD you will need to contact your OEM manufacturer and ask about obtaining a Vista DVD.
Place your Vista DVD in the drive and boot your system (you will need to make sure that the DVD drive is set to be the first boot device in BIOS, if you need help with this contact your OEM or hardware manufacturer). On the screen where you can set
your language preference click the “Repair” option. DO NOT click Install!
The easiest solution is to perform a System Restore. Choose a restore point before the problem started.
If you do not have any restore points available or this does not correct the problem we can try the System File Checker.
The system file checker will scan and replace any corrupt/damaged system files.
Let us know if this resolves the problem.
    Thanks,

DB:2.56:When I Turn My Computer On, It Goes To Blank Screen. ca

    Hi Amanda,

This issue might occur if the display drivers are outdated or corrupted.

    - Were there any recent changes made on the computer prior the issue?

I would suggest you to boot the computer in Safe Mode and install the latest version of graphic card drivers.

Here are the steps to boot the computer in Safe Mode:

When you boot your PC, try hitting the F8 key. This may take you to the Startup Settings that include Safe Mode.If hitting F8 doesn’t work, and you have media for Windows 8.1 (such as a DVD or USB), you can boot from media using the instructions
here. Further instructions about Safe Mode can be found
here.If you do not have media, use the power button to restart your computer during the boot process three times (do not let it get to the end of the boot process). This should bring up the Windows Recovery Environment.Once you have started in Safe Mode with Networking, check for updated drivers:

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap
Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click
Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)Tap or click Update and recovery and then tap or click
Windows Update.Tap or click View details, and tap or click
Check for updates. (If you don't see View details, there aren't any optional updates available.)Under Optional, tap or click the update that you want to install, then click
    Install.
If there are no driver updates, you may install the latest version of graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check if it helps in fixing the issue.

Please update us with the results. We will be glad to assist you.

I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I have custom linetypes in my drawing such as ------- w --------w --------
where the text suddenly becomes italic when it is not suppose to be. I am using the leroy text style (simplex) and I have already check the oblique angle setting in the TEXT STYLE MANAGER and it is set at 0. The strange thing is that I use these linetypes all the time and rarely have this problem. Also the leroy text in my drawing that is not incorporated in the linetype is fine, it is just happening with my linetypes. Please tell me that there is a simple command or setting I am not aware of yet.

I have only just started using Windows Vista and have found that when I'm watching a movie or not using the mouse or keyboard my account automatically logs off and goes to the Users Home Screen after about 2 minutes. This is really frustrating and I was
wondering how I can turn this off...

    Thanks

    DB:2.56:Auto Logging-Off Of User Accounts 17

    Hi jmb86,

You may need to increase the time before you screensaver kicks on and also disable “On resume, display logon screen”. To do this, follow the steps listed below:
    1. Right-click the desktop and click
    Personalize
    2. Click Screen Saver
    3. Where it says Wait: you may need to increase the number of
    minutes
    4. Then uncheck On resume, display logon screen if checked

We look forward to hearing back from you on whether this resolved the issue or even was the issue. If not, don’t worry, we will try something else.

If I let the computers sit (with a black screen), the screen will show up in about 35 minutes.

DB:2.55:Screen Goes Blank After Log-In. Only Mouse Cursor Appears a3

I'm having a similar problem and I'm finding the cause to be Windows Update. I have a Dell Inspiron. The first issue that happened is that my track pad stopped working. Now, I thought my hardware was shot, but after I turned my computer off and had rebooted
the next day, I recieved a Black Screen with only the cursor. When I rebooted, I tried ot go into Safe Mode, but once again, Black Screen with only the cursor. At this point, I booted the Dell Pre-Loader Setup and low and behold, my track pad all of a sudden
works again. At this point, I did a System Restore and my login screen appeared. Now, to test whether it was Windows Update, I allowed it to run once again. This morning when I turned my Inspiron back on again, the had the same problem - Black Screen with
    only the cursor.

Is there an issue with certain Windows Updates and compatability with Dell Programs/Hardware? I know with the PC Desktop thatI built, my parts provider told me to disable Windows Update and download all updates manually due to compaitibility issues with
NVIDIA hardware (my entire PC was NVIDIA Hardware).

On another note, my Trackpad still won't work Windows is loaded, by works in the Dell Pre-Loading Setup Screens.

Hi,I have an IdeapadY430 that was purchased January this year. The problem I am facing is that the touchpad mouse goes crazy when I am sitting with the laptop at certain angles.Particularly, if I am lounging on a couch with the laptop sitting in my lap...The mouse pointer goes crazy and windows start opening up and I can see left and right click menus coming up on the screen even when I am not touching the mousepad on the laptop.I have no problems using USB mouse though.I was wondering if anyone here has faced a similar problem and if so, what is the solution.I have tried checking for updated drivers and even installing Windows 7 but it is the same problem no matter what and it is pretty frustrating.I will appreciate any help on the issueThanks,Sunny

Hi Sunni,Please let us know the outcome of your touchpad issue after sending your laptop in for repair. I too am experiencing the same problem but on a Y460. I've only have had it for three weeks and have not had the opportunity to enjoy it since I've been spending all my time trying to fix the touchpad. I too have tried re-configuring the touchpad options 'till the cows come home. Tried different driver versions to no avail. I'm still not sure if it is a hardware or a software issue. We own three other Lenovos; an S-10, a 3000 v100, and a Thinkpad T410. Have not had any issues with any of these and am quite happy with them. One thing I do not like about the Y460 is the glossy finish on the touchpad. I've noticed that performace gets even worse the more I use it and constantly need to clean it.RegardsRRolando

    Hello, crswafford
Thank you for using the Answers Forum!
We will need more information to help troubleshoot your problem.
What was the exact error message in the bluescreen?
Did this just happen once or multiple times?
What were you doing at the time it happened?
To get the blue screen error information, go to Start, type “eventvwr.exe” in the search box and press enter. You may be prompted to continue. In the Event viewer open the Windows Logs section on the left list, click System and then click Filter Current
Log in the list on the right. On the Filter screen, check the Error checkbox and press OK. In the middle list, look for the blue screen error. Once you have found it, right click the item and choose Copy, Copy Details as Text and paste it to us.

    Hi,

    1. Did you make any changes to the computer recently?

    Method 1.
Let us first run the sfc scan and check if there are any system file corruptions.
    a. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
    b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

More Information about SFC scan can be found in this document:
Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

If I use easy transfer from my laptop (that works perfect) and transfer both user accounts' will that overwrite my problems, or just data files ? How can I get back to normal without as easy as possible ?
or will that just transfer data

DB:2.54:Will Easy Transfer Solve Problems 9d

    Hello mram3333,

I'm not sure if you still need help, but it sounds like you may have a virus infection.
Using easy transfer will not help if you are experiencing problems like you describe. Easy transfer is used mainly when you are building a new OS.

Check out the new free Antivirus from Microsoft. You can download at the URL below:
    http://www.microsoft.com//security_essentials/?mkt+en-us

You might also try to get into safe mode and see if you are having the same problem.

    To get to Safe Mode:
    a) Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.

    b) Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
    c) When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

If that is not helping, you may need to do a clean install of your operating system which would include installing all of the programs
    currently on your machine.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi DMurray,

Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

    Method 1
Check if the Network adapter is configured to save power.
a.Press Windows logo key + C and type Computer in search bar, right click Computer and choose Properties.
    b.Click Device Manager.
c.Navigate to your network adapter, right click it and choose Properties.
    d.Choose Power Management tab.
e.Please uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
f.Restart the computer and test this issue again.

    Method 2
I would suggest you to perform clean boot and check if the issue persists.

    Step 1:
    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.
    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.
    c) Click the ‘Boot’ tab and uncheck ‘Safe Boot’ option.
    d) On the ‘General’ tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option
    Load startup items check box.
    e) On the ‘Services’ tab, click to select the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ check box, and then click
    ‘Disable all’.
    f) On the ‘StartUp’ tab, click ‘Open Task Manager’. In the Task Manager window
under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select ‘Disable’.
    g) Click ‘OK’, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services
    a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
    b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
    c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
    d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns
If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the
    Service list.
If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the
Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items
If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the
Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns
If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the
    Startup Item list.
If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the
Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.
If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.
If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the
Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

    Step 6: Resolve the problem
After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the
    problem item.
    Step 7:
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.
    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.
    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.
    c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click
    ‘OK’.
    d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

DB:2.50:When I Do Not Touch My Keyboard Or Mouse For 2 Minutes, The Screen Goes Blank z9

    Hi Ron,

It seems that the power settings are set in such a way that the computer monitor/screen turns off after 2 minutes to save the power consumption. So, if you want the screen saver to be displayed on the screen when the computer is kept idle and do not want
to turn off the screen, you need to make some changes in the power settings on the computer. Please follow these steps:

    a) Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard and select “Power Options” from that menu.
    b) On the left side of the “Power Options” window, click on the link “Choose when to turn off the display”.
    c) On the next window that appears on the screen, select “Never” from the drop down menu next to the option “Turn off the display” or a larger time as according to your wish.
    d) Click on the “Save changes” button and then close that window.
    e) Now, keep the computer idle for more than 2 minutes and check if the display still turns off.

    Hope this is helpful.

I discovered that there was a BIOS update to version F9 available from Gigabyte to address the problem in general and flashing in version F9 solved my issues.I did it in the good old fashioned, time honoured way with the BIOS ROM image files on a bootable DOS floppy disk and it worked a treat for me. That way I was sure that there was going to be nothing else running that might screw up the flashing process. This is the best reason I know to keep a DOS floppy disk and a floppy drive available.

    Hi Bfox43,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g7-1167dx Notebook and black screen while using it. Here is a link to check on overheating issues.

If the Notebook is overheating this could cause the black screen. Here is a link to check for hardware failures.

    Hope this helps.

that is unusual for a mouse to stop working

but you can use your keyboard to get logged and then you can unplug and wait like 30 secs before replugging

and when you do replug look at the right lower coner of your pc and you should see if it is reconizing your mouse and if not go to the mouse provider site and get the driver for it

but if you still having trouble and try another mouse to use till you get that mouse to work

    good luck

I am running Windows 7 on my oneyear olddesktop computer .I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 and receiver 3.1. When I am using the mouse and keyboard to enter information into a website, Microsoft Word, etc., and I release the mouse on its
pad, the monitor display occasionally goes to the desktop, I can still continue typing on the keyboard and the data entered continues to be applied, I have to just move the mouse slightly to get the program back on the display. This is a random, but often
enough to be very annoying, occurrence. I have updated the driver for the mouse, changed it's batteries, but no help. As a matter of fact when I just lifted the mouse to confirm its model number, without pressing any mouse buttons/wheel, this screen disappeared
and up came the desktop. Any thoughts? I should add that this problem was not seen on my previous computer running XP and started almost as soon as I activated the new computer.

    plz help!!!

DB:2.48:Blank Screen After Windows Logo Screen 3s

    Hi Mohini,

This could be an issue with the display driver installed on the computer. It might also be an issue with the system files present on the computer.

Please assist me with the following information related to the issue:
    1) What is the Make and Model of the computer?
    2) Dis you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

It is always recommended to use the latest video driver for the video card on the computer. Besides the display driver, it might also happen due to drive errors on the computer.

I would suggest you to perform startup repair and check if it fixes the issue. Follow the method:
    Method 1:
I would suggest you to refer to the link and run the startup repair from the system recovery options:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-are-system-recovery-options#what-are-system-recovery-options=windows-7

Check if the issue still persists. If it does, move to the next method.

    Method 2:
I would suggest you to boot the computer in safe mode with networking to troubleshoot the issue further.

    Follow the steps accordingly:
    Step 1:
Refer to the link to boot the computer in safe mode with networking:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-sg/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

    Step 2:
Let’s download the latest display driver from the manufacturer website. After downloading the driver,

follow the steps to uninstall the display driver:
    a) In the Start menu, type ‘device manager’.
    b) Open Device Manager.
    c) Expand ‘Display adapters” and right-click on ‘drivers Device and select ‘Uninstall’.
d)Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the driver.

Restart the computer and check if the issue still persists. If it doesn’t, it was the display driver that was causing the issue. Install the driver which you have downloaded from the manufacturer website.

    Method 3:
Let’s check if it’s an issue with drive errors on the computer. Run check disk in safe mode. Follow the steps:
    Step 1:
Refer to the link to boot the computer in safe mode:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-sg/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

    Step 2:
Follow the steps to run the check disk in safe mode:
    a) Click on
Start menu and type “cmd”. Click on Command Prompt.
    b) Type the following command and check for the errors.
    “chkdsk /F /R”
Important: Data available on bad sectors might be lost when chkdsk tries to repair your hard disc.
Restart the computer and check if the black screen issue occurs again.

For reference, you can also refer to the link:
“Why is my screen black when I start Windows 7?”
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/why-is-my-screen-black-when-i-start-windows-7

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow
these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, you can refer to the link:

My screen is slightly askew when I close my Macbook. Never really noticed it before. Lately my screen would go black in certain positions of opening. No problem, I just moved it slightly and it would be fine. Today, the screen went blue w/o warning. I restarted it twice and it came up the second time like normal. Right now the screen will go blue on me and then come back to life without my moving the screens position. What's my problem? What's the fix? What's the co$t? Is it time for a new MacBook after 3 wonderful years? Thanks!

DB:2.48:Screen Would Go To Black As I Move Hinge; Now It Goes Blue W/O Warning. da

I have the same problem. The brightness of the screen goes some how gets messed up when the screen is hinged in a certain position (a little less than 90 degree). I initially thought that it went to sleep (but it's not because the sleep indication light does not come on and off), but as i adjust the screen a little, it will come back on.

seems like this is a well know problem, I hope Apple put out a fix for this.
