I am trying to add a new ESXi server to our Virtual Center. I have it currently set to our Virtual Center host for licensing, and it is pulling 2 ESX CPU licenses just fine. We have a VI Enterprise license, with 20 availble Virtual Center Agent for ESX Server licenses availble.

When I try to add the host into Virtual Center, it says that there aren't available licenses. I can see on the ESXi host that the Virtual Center Agent server is stopped, though I cannot restart it.

I have read many posts about needing a license for Virtual Infrastructure Foundation or Enterprise licenses to be able to get the Agent licenses, though we have that.

Am I missing something here?

DB:3.32:Esxi Integration Into Virtual Center 9f

Hopefully the below image loads correctly. There are currently 3 hosts managed through Virtual Center. Yes, added the host ot the license server before hand and that host took two licenses. You will see that that host (virtual3.roc-hsd.local) does not show in the list.

Also, as a note, we wre granted a new license today from our corporate IS team. We wre increased from 10 total CPUs to 30.

I have a new server running Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.  I have 5 guests all running 2008 R2 and all on my server VLAN with a VLAN tag of 20.  If I add the 6th, it does not have access to the VLAN.  If I shut down one of the original 5 and bring up the 6th, it has access.  If I tag it into a different VLAN, it connects.  I tried creating another virtual switch and binding to a different NIC and the host still isn't able to connect.  I tried just using the native VLAN on the trunk (20) without tagging on the guests and it exhibits the same behavior.  It's not anything with my physical network as I can't even ping other guests if I hardcode the address. Is it hardcoded somewhere to only allow 5 guests on a VLAN per host?

Fresh, new virtual on another host machine also does not play sound, makes me suspect a windows update. All PC and Laptop are HP.

I have confirmed in Device Manager that the Sound, video and game controllers have up to date drivers. I checked from inside Device Manger and not from the web.

Using Camtasia 7.1. recording software and used to be able to playback audio from within virtual.

Host and Virtual updated with latest windows updates.

Host machine speakers works fine.

Confirmed that sound card is detected upon login (VMWare setting)

Confrimed that sound would use speakers and not headset or some other device.

Confirmed that sound is not muted in virtual.

Went to control panel in virtual, Sounds, picked the speakers and selected Advanced to test, and virtual does not play test sounds.

Performed the same action on the host machine and the test DOES play sound.

What am I missing?

Hi,

I've reinstalled our ESX host and cannot add my existing virtual maschines. If I create a new virtual maschines and select "use an existing virtual disk" the information are created twice like "ServerOne" (allready exists)and "ServerOne_1"(created) on the vmfs volume but VMDK files are only stored in the first folder.

How do I add an existing virtual maschine to my ESX host without creating a new virtual maschine or how do I let the ESX host use an existing VM? Is there any possibility to let the ESX host or VirtualCenter "scan" for existing virtual maschines?

Hi,

I have installed a new host with ESX version 3.0.1 (Build 32039), since all our other ESX servers are installed with that version. My new server is on a different subnet, but I don't think that it should really matter if I am able to ping the new server from my workstation or from the virtual center server. I am able to get into the new server via SSH or the VI Client. When I try to add the new host, I get the message "There are not enough license installed to perform the operation." . When I look at my licenses in my Virtual Center, I have 2 ESX Server Standard remaining out of 4, I have 1 Virtual Center agent for ESX Server remaining out of 4.

When I connect directly to the new server with the VI Client and I try to change the "License Source" to my license server, I get the following error : " Unable to change license state as the license server is unavailable".

Does anybody have any clues on how to get my new server being managed by Virtual Center.

Thank you and have a good day.

DB:3.08:What Happens To Virtual Machine On Host Failure 8j

Hi Vitor,
Thank you for the reply. I'm aware of the 99.9% uptime SLA, so that was the basis of my assumption that the virtual machine would automatically restart on another host. However, I can't seem to find any information that specifically states that.
AlsoI amvery interested in understanding the expected restart time (again assuming there is one).
Thanks again for your assistance.

ryankay

Windows Azure Virtual Machines are built on the same service model that web and worker roles are so I think we have to look to the only major differencebetweenthem,
the OS image.
In roles we get new VM's by applying one base OS Image to the new host and then our service (app code) is wired up on that VM.

In Virtual Machines case the OS Image is persisted on Azure Storage so there is no need for:
- Copy one base OS Image from Fabric's Image Repository into the new host (the custom image already exists in Blob Storage)
- Configure and
Reboot thebase OS Image (it's already configured)
So I'm expecting that the Virtual Machines recovery to be much faster then Roles.

On another point of view:
Theyannouncedthat Virtual Machines take 8-9minutesfrom creation to RDP in the current preview but the goal is 5 minutes. Removing the copy selected base
OS Image to users storage account step and configure that image with selected userpassword step I think we can expect aprettygood recovery time in case of host failure. One good example of this could be the time that changing one Virtual Machine
capacity takes.

I don't have real time values, maybe I'm missing something but this is my current point of view... :)

DB:3.08:How To Access A Newly Created Virtual Machine? m9

I don't think its a limitation of your host pc, one of the benifits of virtualisation is that you can more a guest vm to different hosts with different hardware. I suspect this is a fedora installation issue. If you try to install windows Xp on to a vm which has a scsi controller you get a similar error as you need to load the vmware scsi drivers as part of the windows install.

I would create a new post for this issue, and then someone who has installed fedora should be able to advise you.

There is a specific Hyper-V forum here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/threads/
That said, you just need to think of this in terms of physical computers. How would you connect to computers together and keep them off your production network? Same goes here. Separate NICs on a separate subnet or segment, loopback cable,
etc.
A Hyper-V private network is internal only, so you can't use that between machines.

Darius,

Sorry to hear that you're having some trouble using the product.

Here are a few things I'd recommend:

1) Since you are just starting your proof of concept exercise, I'd highly recommend that you try out our latest release SCVMM 2008 (just released a week ago), which has a much richer functionality set with higher quality. Here is where you can download a eval copy (which is good for 180 days).

2) The issues you are seeing:

For error 2606, it's a misleading warning message. There is nothing wrong with the system or your operation. It just tells you that your manual refresh did not succeed, because there is a refresh job running already for the same host. We've fixed this issue in VMM 2008 RTM.

I have an OLD server at work that I recently converted to a VM on a new host. The guest OS is Windows NT 4.0. I'm hoping to be able to do tape back-ups but the back-up software that we have is so old that it will not recognize the USB tape drive that we have on the host machine. Would there be a way to add a generic scsi device to the virtual machine and connect it to the USB drive on the host? I'd rather not run the back-ups from the host directly or have to upgrade any of the ancient software that we have on the virtual machine. I'm not sure if this would be possible or not as I have very limited experience with VMware. If it matters, the host is running VMware Server 2 on Fedora 7.

DB:3.06:Virtual Devices 1m

Server 2.0 does allow you to add pass thru SCSI devices to guests (via Add Hardware) but it just depends, I suspect, whether the host sees this tape drive as a SCSI device or not. The pass thru devices are usually /dev/sg* so take a look first off to see if you have any of these on the host when the tape device is present.

DB:3.04:Need To Retrieve All Virtual Servers By Resource Group And By Datastore dd

I need an export of all virtual servers, showing their current datastore, host name and the Resource Pool they are associated with. The aim is to be able to move all virtuals of a resource pool to a new datastore.

The current problem with this is that when I show all virtuals under a Resource Group in the VMware client, if the virtuals are on different hosts, I get the error:

The requested Storage vMotion would simulataneously change a virtual machine's storage placement and its execution host; however, this is not supported on the Source host MyVmWareHost.MyDomain.Com.

To get around this, if I can get a list of the virtual machines for a particular Resource Group, I can select the ones which are not on the same host, migrate them to one host, then be able to perform the datastore migration.

Here's what I have so far....

To get a list of virtual machines and their current datastore:

Get-Datacenter | Get-VM | %{$vm = $_ ; Get-Datastore -VM $vm | %{$vm.Name + "," + $_.Name} }

To get a list of virtual machines and their Resource Pool allocations:

get-resourcepool * | Get-VM | select name, resourcepool

I thus need to combine the two but I am not sure how to do this. I need the output to look like this:

Virtual Server Name, Current Datastore, Host Name, Parent Resource Pool

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

DB:3.04:Need To Retrieve All Virtual Servers By Resource Group And By Datastore dd

The following PowerCLI script will retrieve all your vm's with their datastores, host and resourcepool:

Get-VM |
Select-Object -Property Name,
@{N="Datastore";E={[string]::Join(',',($_.DatastoreIdList|ForEach-Object {Get-View -Id $_}).Name)}},
VMHost,ResourcePool

A vm can have it's disks on multiple datastores. That is why I use the Join() to combine the names in one string.

DB:3.02:Vmware Vm Not Shown On Scvmm2012 k9

I am trying to manage virtual machines running on a VMware ESXi host using Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
I was able to add the ESXi machine using the Add VMware VirtualCenter server option, but can't access any of the VMs on the datastore associated with this ESXi server.
The datastore of the ESXi box is showing up with the correct name, but it won't let me see any of the VMs that have already been created; I get There are no virtual machines on this host.
Because I couldn't get any of the existing virtual machines to show up, I tried creating some new ones. When using VMM to connect to ESXi and create new VMs, I get the following error messages in the rating explanation section:

The virtualization software on the selected host does not support virtual hard disks on an IDE bus.

and

The virtualization software on the host XXXXXX does not support the creation of dynamic virtual hard disk.

Any ideas on why I can't manage existing machines and why I can't create new ones? The existing machines were created in vSphere.
I should note that the ESXi server and the server running SCVMM are both on the same domain.
I should also note that although the ESXi box has been added as a VirtualCetner server, when I try to add it through the Add Host option, I get an error message saying Virtual Machine Manager cannot complete the VirtualCenter action on server ESXi because
of the following error: The operation is not supported on the object.

DB:3.02:Vmware Vm Not Shown On Scvmm2012 k9

I guess you are trying to create a VM using the default settings, which are not supported on VMware.
- while creating the VM, make sure the hard disk is attached to SCSI (instead of IDE, which is default)
- VMM doesnt support dynamic discs on older versions of ESXi servers. Please make sure you are using a fixed disc.

And on why you cant see the existing VMs, it is possible that theose VMs are created using some unsupported configuration. Please try to create a VM asI explained above. That should gives us more idea about the issue.

Thanks

DB:3.00:Virtual Center And Vsphere Esxi Add Host Fails m7

I am having an issue with Virtual Center adding a VMWare ESXi host

I currently have a single VMWare VSphere ESXi host, version (and build) number 4.1.0, 260247. This host has a 4 port Ethernet NIC, with one port connected, and a fiber channel HBA to attach to our shared storage. The host is being utilized for a demo of VMWare View, and wont be needed for HA, DRS, etc.

I have 2 virtual machines, both Windows server 2003 on the host. Both are patched and part of a production AD domain and tree. On one virtual machine, I have installed Virtual Center, and I am utilizing the version of SQL included since our demo will be fairly small scale. The Virtual Center version is 4.0.0.10021. So, the virtual center server is running as a virtual machine (which I have done before without issue)

The problems center around adding the VMWare host to Virtual Center. I can add the host successfully. However, after about a minute, the host goes into a disconnected state. I can reconnect, and sometimes the reconnect will work, other times, I have to walk through the process of specifying the IP address, root account and password, etc. And, other times, I have to completely remove the host from Virtual Center, and re-add. But, the bottom line is once I add the host, it goes into a disconnected state within 2-3 minutes.

The error I receive the majority of the time is: A general system error occurred: Internal error: vmodl.fault.hostcommunication.

To troubleshoot, Ive done the following so far:

1.Verify I can successfully access the host directly with the VSphere client from several different desktops as well as the virtual center machine. When doing this, I never lose connectivity with the VMWare host.

2.Run extended pings. No packets are lost

3.Verify no firewalls turned on or between my location and the vmware server

4.Successfully telnet to port 902 (or whatever the default port is; I cant recall if its 902, 903, etc). But, whatever it is, when I look it up, I am able to successfully telnet to it.

5.The VMWare ESXi server is not in any DNS tables, nor are the 2 windows virtual servers. So, Ive modified the hosts file on each of them with the appropriate settings. I can ping to all by name, including just the name as well as the FQDN.

6.The 2 virtual machines were not in the AD domain, so I requested one of the AD administrators add these in. He did, and in the process changed the names of the servers. So, I updated the hosts file.

7.In addition to the name change and updating the hosts file, I completely removed virtual center from the VM it was on, including the SQL portion. Basically, my aim was to remove any possible references to the previous VMs names. Then, I reinstalled both and attempted to add the ESXi host back in. Still the same results.

8.Utilized the SSH and restarted the services on the ESXi host several times.

9.When examining the virtual center system logs closer, I observed several SSL certificate errors, including host name could not be verified, etc. (Unfortunately, I left the exact errors at work; I will post them when I return to work). This led me to believe I may have a corrupted SSL certificate either on the virtual center or ESXi host, or both. So, I used openssl to generate a new ssl certificate and imported it. After doing that, I now get the error: authenticity of hosts ssl certificate is not verified

I cant get the host to go into Virtual Center now. So, it comes down to those 2 errors, and the above are the steps Ive taken so far. The original error, A general system error occurred: Internal error: vmodl.fault.hostcommunication seems to be related to the virtual machine renames and a possibly corrupt SSL certificate. I have modified the hosts files and reinstalled virtual center, so the host renames should be out of the picture. However, my attempt to generate a new SSL certificate seems to have made things worse. At this point, Im not really sure which way to go.

Id appreciate any suggestions, etc so I can get back on track with this. Its quite frustrating to spend a day and a half on something that usually only takes me a minute or two (literally). Hopefully, at least Ill learn something interesting from all this

Hi all...

I just downloaded server 2.0 RC1 and created a new virtual machine for CentOS 5.1 with a 50G virtual disk. I started it, ok. Installed vmware tools, ok. Then I went to Add New Hardware (while the machine was running) so I could add another virtual disk with which CentOS could use as a separate partition device. Upon completing the wizard, and selecting Allocate Now, the vmware server crashes informing the server could not be contacted. All tabs within the web access pages show "loading..." until after a time a popup tells me "...could not be contacted." This has been reproducible even after a clean restart of the host, and with no guests powered on.

I was finally able to create the extra disk by going through the Create New Virtual Machine Wizard. Hopefully I will be able to just kill this new virtual machine (as it is not needed) and swipe the vdmk it created and add it to my exsting CentOS guest.

Not sure how to file a bug report, but this would seem to disqualify RC1 from candidacy. Please let me know if any logs are needed, how to get them, and where to submit.

Thanks!

So then the only option would be to delete the Host

in Virtual Center and then re-add them?

I think that's your only option so that you can at least get your servers managed by VirtualCenter again. That piece is easy.

Ideally it would be best if you could save the history of your farm that currently exists in your database and tie it to your new server registrations. This is where you'll probably need a DBA. If you don't care about prior history in your VC database, then skip this step and start fresh with your new server registrations.

When you re-register your servers, be sure to register them by host name (FQDN).

I hope that helps.

3 segments including 1 management segment in which your service console will be placed I guess?

Just create 3 vSwitches, physically attach them to the correct segments.

You should be able to access the Service Console IP (via VI Client) on the management LAN and depending on your physical routers you could enable it to be accessible from other segments as well.

I'm new to ESXi having used Virtual Server prior to this and have a simple question about moving virtual machines from one host to another. WIth Virtual Server it was simply a case of copy the Virtual Machine files and load them in to the new Virtual Server. Is it the same with ESXi?

I do not have Virtual Center and currently only have one ESXi host on my site. I have built a Virtual Machine on this but this host needs to be moved to another site which will free up another more powerful server to come back and be the Virtual Host for my site. This virtual machine is needed here so I need to take a copy, remove it from the current host, swap the physical servers, create a new host and copy this virtual machine back on to the new host. Sounds straightforward but I want to know if I will be able to load this virtual machine on to the new host after I've done all the physical moving around.

DB:2.98:Problem Creating Virtual Desktop Deployment: Windows Server 2012 Datacentre (Full) 7k

Hello
I have a problem, I’ll start from the beginning
I had a test environment of Windows server STD 2012 Full, VDI Deployment, consisting of different servers carrying out the various roles
ICT VH04 (virtual host) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
ICT-CB01 (connection broker) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
ICT-GW01 (gateway) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
ICT-WA01 (web access) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
The above setup worked fine, I used a guide from
http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569 to implement the above (I was using a
windows 7 sysprepped template),
Using the above method worked a treat I was also able to add an additional Remote Desktop Virtualization Host to the above set up (Windows server STD 2012) without any issues.
Users could access desktop etc etc, I was able to evaluate the setup and proceed to buy some upgraded hardware.
Anyway the time has come to go live, I thought I’d make use of the original setup but remove the virtual host and add a clustered pair of beefed up Windows Server 2012 Datacentre servers. The new setup consist of:
ICT VH20 (virtual host) Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (full)
ICT VH21 (virtual host) Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (full
ICT-CB01 (connection broker) Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (full)

ICT-GW01 (gateway) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
ICT-WA01 (web access) Windows Server 2012 STD (full)
I tried to add the servers just as I did the first time I added servers to the pool (all done by using the GUI on the Connection Broker server), the servers rebooted a few times and GUI looked like it had added them to the deployment so I tried to create
a new Virtual Desktop Collection (having first created a new sysprepped image template on the cluster)
I ran through the wizard but when I got to the specify template stage the template was not visible.
So I tried sysprepping the iamge machine again…ran the wizard again…no joy.
BTW The user account is full domain admin.
I have tried:
Starting the server manager as Administrator
just adding a single node to the deployment pool
just adding the cluster name to the deployment pool
running the deployment from the virtual hosts
made the connection brokers computer account a member of the RDS Management Servers on the virtual hosts
Confirmed the remote powershell can me run
Tried to install the remote desktop services/ Remote desktop Virtualization role on the virtual host manually without adding it to a deployment
I have tried installing via cmd: DISM /online /enable-feature /Remote-Desktop-Services /all
(I have the log file if needed)
I upgraded the connection broker from std to datacentre (I’d like to rebuild this back to STD)
The above didn’t work so, I have rebuilt the connection broker to datacentre again with the same results
I have done some digging around (lots of posts about not installing RDS on on a DC…my servers are not DC’s) but when post sprung out ref a windows patch (MS update KB2821895)
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ff40dc6f-1d40-4a3c-8e48-eb8e961dcb70/server-2012-rtm-remote-desktop-connection-broker-role-wont-install
My clustered virtual host have the above patch (this patch cannot be uninstalled! Unless someone knows another way)
In my original setup the virtual host didn’t have the patch.
I don’t not want to rebuild the virtual hosts unless I have to, as a lot of config has gone into setting these up.

When I have compared the old server virtual host server to the new ones and try to remove the Remote Desktop Services Roles from the new server the role isn’t installed, yet it will show up in the connection broker deployment GUI as being installed.

Can anyone help?
Cheers
Mike

DB:2.98:Problem Creating Virtual Desktop Deployment: Windows Server 2012 Datacentre (Full) 7k

Hello All
For info, as previously suggested this patch cannot be removed (I even tried a PowerShell script to remove the patch to no avail..it was still there.

This is the reply I got from the support call I raised
I have checked the attachment that you sent. Actually we are experiencing issues with
KB# 2821895 which causes issue in installing
or uninstalling roles on the Windows 2012 server. Unfortunately there is no way to uninstall this patch either. Is there any way you can test this on a server which do not have this patch installed.

To resolve the issue, it required a full rebuild of the clustered virtual hosts (what a pain!!!!)I then created the VDIsetup\Installation of
Roles etc.before any updates were applied. All is now working as expected.

DB:2.97:Virtual Center Can't Communicate With Nat Esx Host fx

We have a Virtual Center 2.0.2 Server on our internal network and an ESX 3.0.1 host on our DMZ that we are trying to manage with that Virtual Center.

We opened the necessary ports and are doing NAT to facilitate the communication across the firewall. We opened TCP 27000/27010 for the License Server -- that part appears to work fine. We also opened TCP/UDP 902 between them for Virtual Center.

I'm able to add the ESX host from the Virtual Center; it shows up and I'm able to access the VMs' consoles and whatnot ... but performance data is not showing up. After about 15-30 seconds, the ESX host shows up as disconnected in Virtual Center.

I'm able to ping the internal Virtual Center host from the DMZ-bound ESX host's service console using both its DNS name and its NAT IP address. The problem appears to be that the ESX host on the DMZ is trying to talk to the Virtual Center over UDP 902 using its internal IP address, ignoring the NAT all together. Our network administrator says he sees inbound traffic at the DMZ firewall from the ESX host over UDP 902 trying to connect to the Virtual Center using its internal IP address; that same message appears every 10 seconds and it's obviously being dropped, since it's trying to connect to the internal IP rather than the NAT IP.

We believe that the problem is that the internal host's application layer (Virtual Center) is telling the DMZ host's application layer (ESX) to connect to its internal IP address, hence failing to take the NAT into account.

Has anyone else seen this? Any idea how to fix this from the Virtual Center and/or ESX side?

DB:2.97:Virtual Center Can't Communicate With Nat Esx Host fx

Hello,

I see two problems... One, your Service Console resides in your DMZ... While the VMs can be in your DMZ, placing the SC in your DMZ is asking for serious trouble. Do you place the door to your Datacenter off your lobby? In effect this is what you have done with the SC. Remember if anyone gets access to your DMZ (which is most likely possible) then they have a good chance of having lots of attack points for the SC and once in the SC, they can access ANY VM on the host or on a LUN connected to the host. If this is dictated by your security team then they truly do not understand ESX and how it is secured.

The 2nd point is that NAT would not be the way to go as you have to have your firewall forward a number of ports back and forth and if your firewall does not support connection tracking (which none do at the moment for VC traffic) you will have the problems you are seeing.

I suggest you remove the SC from the DMZ and place it inside your internal networks, and that will fix both issues.

Best regards,

Edward

DB:2.97:How To Update Deployment Images Virtually 3c

Hi,
I am looking to build and service images virtually on my tech PC, with either VMWare player, VirtualBox or Windows Virtual PC, does not matter to me which.
I have tried all three solutions and was expecting that they should be able to boot PXE from WDS, so I could deploy/build a basic image for updating/servicing and recapture for re-deployment to physical computers.
None of virtual solutions could boot from WDS, although myphysical host computer does just fine. I hit f12 at PXE boot and it just fails stating boot manager no OS found. I am new to the whole virtual world and I assume that I might be missing something.
I am assuming that my virtual clients are using the same NIC drivers that are running on my host machine. Do I need to configure something on my WDS server? Do I need to add some special virtual NIC drivers to my boot images? Do I need to use a special NIC
setting on my virtual clients?
This solution needs to support x64 images. I was told Windows Virtual PC only supports x86 images.
Any help muchappreciated,

Hi,

This type issue occurs may be caused by the security program in physical machine affects the virtual machine’s connection.

I suggest you temporarily removing the antivirus program and turn off Windows Firewall. You may need to turn off firewall on Server site.

Meanwhile, please let us know if the WDS and the physical machine in the same subnet.Kim Zhou

I'm testing VMWare Server 2 (free) on Windows platform. Everything works fine, but I can't move the virtual machine from one host to another. I can't add it to inventory - it givers error: The cause of this problem may be that the virtual machine's .vmx file is corrupted, or that the virtual machine version is newer than is recognized by the host. You can remove the virtual machine from the inventory if you believe that it is not recoverable

I've tried 2 different scennarios:

1. I've copied \Virtual Machines\*.* (all files and folders) from Host A to Host B.

2. I've first imported datasource from Host A to Host B (shared Virtual Machines - folder of Host A) and tried to import machine from inventory.

Errror is the same. Host A is Windows Vista, Host B is Windows XP. Client is Win2003.

Hah, yesterday I moved one virtual Windows server from one host to another in offline suspend mode. It didn't start, because there was second disc mapped from another VM which was deleted at the same time. And because server was in suspended mode, extra disk could not be removed. After some panic, I opened that main configuration file and choosed second disk value TRUE to FALSE, and the system is now up and running. Damn I was happy to solve it

DB:2.97:No Network Connction After Copy/Move Virtual Machine To Another Host. jd

Hello,

I am having little network problem when trying to use guest on different host machines.

Here is what I am trying to do:

I create Win XP virtual machine using Workstation 6. All works on original host machine. I have another host machine with Workstation 6 installed. Two host machines are XP but different hardware (CPU, NIC, ...)

When I copy virtual machine to other host I can open it and strat just fine. When I am opening it for the first time on new host it asks me whether i moved it or copied. I tried both options - result is always the same. VM is operational but I cannot get any network connectivity. Not even between host and guest. Guest os reports "Limited or no connectivity". I setup network for guest as "Bridged".

In other words virtual machine I create always works fine on the host it was created on. After being copied to different host it works but no network connectivity.

Any ideas?

My goal is to be able use one virtual machine with two or more different hosts (not at the same time of course). I like to store it on portable storage device and use it on host at work or at home.

Is it possible to accomplish it? What do I need to do to get network to work on different host machines?

Any help would be appreciated,

Art

You can choose the physical NIC for bridging under "Edit Virtual Network Settings... Host Virtual network Mapping". Use VMnet0 as this is the default for bridged connections.

DB:2.97:Hyper-V Cluster, With 2 Nodes And 1 Virtual Disk On A Das With Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition js

I'm rather new to clustering and DAS and SAN storage devices so I am trying something rather simple to get me going, this is the scenario
2 x Dell Servers of different spec both installed with Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition.
I have added the hyper-v role on both the servers.
1 x Dell MD3200 (DAS using SAS cables and SAS Controller Cards) I have created
1 Virtual Disk of 2TB
Please note I am not using iScsi
My Intention is to do the following
Host Server 1
4 x Virtual Guests the Virtual Machine info and VHD's to be stored on the single Virtual Disk i created on the MD3200

Host Server 2
4 x Virtual Guests the Virtual Machine info and VHD's to be stored on the single Virtual Disk i created on the MD3200.
So basically both Host Server's can see and write information to the Single LUN Virtual Disk I created, and in the event that one of the hosts fails then the virtual guests merely cutover to the other host server, and the memory and processor power adjusts
accordingly to handle the 8 machines it is now looking after.
Is this possible with out of the box features in Server 2012 Std? Will I have issues around data corruption due to different file systems? If possible then what is the process.
Do I connect Host Server 1 to the (DAS) Virtual Disk, create my VM's setup clustering on Host Server 1, then connect Host Server 2 to the DAS add it to the cluster and then create the VM's? Or do I connect both machines to the DAS setup the cluster and then
start writing data (creating the vms) on the Host Servers.
Lastly could I use the same process for file servers? Which in essence is 2 x servers connected to the DAS, but I'm sure if I understand the above I will be able to answer this one myself. :-)
Thanking the technet world in advance.

DB:2.97:Hyper-V Cluster, With 2 Nodes And 1 Virtual Disk On A Das With Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition js

Can you explain why this wouldn't work with the virtual disks created on the MD3200 storage array. Do you understand enough about the solution in that the virtual disk is a logical partition at the hardware level.
It can be 100 times logical partition at the hardware level (c) ... but it does not matter. You can:
1) Configure a CSV on top of a shared storage (can be single LU with a SAS-attached SAN MD3xxx unit is in OP's scenario), use shared VHDX feature simulating SAS disk between VMs and do configure guest VM cluster using simulated SAS storage (that would be
recommended way to go for OP IMHO).
2) Provide every VM with own LU and have guest VM cluster in an old school way (requires re-partitioning and is PITA to manage as there would be many-many LUs).
3) Create Clustered Storage Spaces from MD3xxx unit (it's certified for that recently by Dell), have CSV on top of of CSS and then goes scenario 1) (good if you want to use CSS features like say Tiering or WB cache or enclosure awareness etc).
BUT. You cannot go store a bunch of VHDs on NTFS-formatted shared SAS disk and configure guest VM cluster using pairs of them running @ the different physical hosts. That's what OP was originally intended to do. Not possible.
Hope this helped :)StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

When I try to add the VMware ESX Server to VMM again, it says, The serverESXSERVER is already associated with this Virtual Machine Manager server.

So I cannot add hosts, and I cannot delete the host group.
When I retry the failed Add Virtual Machine Host job, it allows me to enter new credentials, but I've entered my MS Domain credentials, and I've tried entering the ESXSERVER root credentials and both fail.
Please help, thanks!
I was trying to add the VMWARE ESX Server to SCVMM to migrate those ESX VMs to our Hyper-V environment.
If I can't figure out how to do this through SCVMM, hopefully there's a manual way to migrate them.

Did you change the ip address?

Try restarting VC and HOST. Look for old instances in the db. If you find remove them.

Something unrelated to the LUN mapping; a system cannot connect to 2 isolated networks that share the same subnet.

Hello all,

I moved two VMs over to a new MacBook Pro that was brought online using Time Machine from my old MacBook Pro. Both of the VMs run, but one of them has lost internet connectivity. The Bridged option won't work at all while the LAN and Host only connect with limited connectivity and ultimately, neither work.

The error message is:

The network bridge on device /dev/ vmnet0 is not running

The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network.

l just had a similar error on my vcenter server with version 5.5 update 2. l simply logon to the host machine where the vcenter is located. Then right click the vcenter server, clicked "edit settings", then clicked "network adapter". On the Network label, selected the vcenter server network vlan and clicked ok to apply changes.

Hope this could solve yours.

DB:2.94:Can't Add Host To Virtual Center cf

Here's the scenario:

ESX 3 with just 1 VM running W2K3 Server and Virtual Center 2 installed. I created a 2 Virtual Disks (7 GB and 400GB) The 7GB is for the OS and swap/temp, and the big 400GB was going to be for the Virtual Center application and to use as a datastore.

I got the licensing working on Virtual Center, and I saw that datastores on VMFS is no longer needed. I didn't want to waste that 400GB's of space, so, I created a new 4GB drive on the VM, stopped the Virtual Center services, copied the contents (really just the VC application) and re-assigned the drive letters and rebooted. On reboot of the VC VM, I was no longer able to connect to the ESX 3 host.

I guessed I needed to delete the ESX host from the VC inventory. However, after I deleted the host from the VC inventory, I seemed to have returned to the issue with the licensing - no available licenses.

Interestingly, when I access the ESX host directly from the VIClient, the ESX host thinks it is still being managed by Virtual Center.

Do I need rebuild the VC VM, and reinstall VC? Or, is there some file on the ESX host that just needs to get removed?

Please help on this.

DB:2.94:New Guest Os On Vmware Linux Host 1d

From VMWare Server Console help file:

To boot the virtual machine from the DVD or CD-ROM drive in a client system, complete the following steps.

a. When you first begin booting the guest operating system, press the Esc key. A boot menu appears.

b. Open the virtual machine settings editor (choose VM Settings) and select the CD-ROM drive. Select Use physical drive, then next to Location, select Client.

c. Return to the boot menu in the guest operating system. Select the CD-ROM drive, then press Enter to boot the virtual machine from the CD-ROM drive of the client on which you are running the VMware Server Console.

Like other poster, I would also recommend using an iso image instead of the original CD, because of performance issues.

I currently have a ESX 3.5 environment with two physical hosts in a single Data Center Cluster. Hosts all my production VM Servers

I am now building a 3rd host (ESXi) to house just virtual workstations. I am wanting to add this host to my VC for a single management console for all my VM Hosts, but I want to know the best practice on this. I feel that I should not add the 3rd (ESXi) host into the ESX Cluster.

Should I just add a new cluster under the datacenter, just add the host to the current datacenter (but not under the cluster), or create a new datacenter.

Please let me know your suggestions or if you a similar environment.

Thank you

If you are not going to use HA/DRS just create a new cluster for your ESXi server. Keep as single datacenter. This may make since from a management standpoint. Will need to license if you want to manage from VC.

Verify you have licensing for the VirtualCetner server, VC agents, and ESX server. On the last two you should have enough to cover all the physical CPUs. Are you using the license server for all your licensing?

I am running 1.01 build 29996 on CentOS 4.3 as host. Guests will be a combination of FC and W2k3 Server. The host has a single nic. The guests will all have static IP configuration.

What I would like to do is be able to route between the physical network (172.28.23.0) that the host is plugged into and a virtual network (192.168.251.0) that the Host provides. Then the VM guests would be on the 192 net and be able to see the 172 network and the 172 network should be able to see the guests.

From the docs and from what I have found tinkering this is what I have now

Bridged - Guests share address space on physical net host is attached to

NAT - Guest are on private network that the host manages NAT for. The problem with this for me is that the physical net computers (172) cannot see the guests.

Host only. Guests/Host cannot see the physical net and vice versa.

I can always put a router between the host and the 172 net and bridge the 192 net on the host, but if I can eliminate the extra box, that would be swell.

My first thought would be to add another vmnet to the host and route between eth0 of the host and the new vmnet and have the guests all use the new vmnet.

Am I close?

Thanks

Hello all,

I have just tried to add my third of twelve ESX hosts (3.0.2) to Virtual Center. This is my first glitch.

When I choose to "Add new Host," and walk through the wizard steps, I receive an error that says "the host ESXxxx is already connected to this virtual server." Well, it isn't, but then it adds a "grayed out" and italicized entry in VC in a state of "disconnected." If I right click on that and choose "connect" I walk through the above steps and back to square one.

Is this a basic ESX install issue? Should I unlicense it, wipe it clean and rebuild? Or would this point to a VC issue and not the esx host itself?

If you've gotten this far, Thank you.

The fastest and easy way is to install from an ISO. Either ISO your DVD or download an ISO copy (as previous posters have mentioned) and upload it to your vmimages directory using SCP or VEAM SCP.

If you intend on installing another VM using the same disk or if you need the disk to install additional extras than having the ISO readily available to the VM makes things allot faster.

DB:2.92:Virtualserver Migration: Network Doesn't Work 8a

I have one VirtualServer R2 with one virtual host (Win2003 SP1).

Now I want to migrate that virtual machine to WMware Server and I've done the following tasks:

1) uninstall Virtual Machine Additions

2) shutdown guest OS on Virtual Server

3) copy the directory on the new WMware Server server (it's a new server)

4) import the virtual machine in VMware

5) startup the virtual host and install VMware tools

...but the network on the virtual machine cannot work: no ping

Please note that another virtual machine on that host (built on VMware, not imported) works fine.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks.

Post the ipconfig for the host and the guest. Post the vmx file for this guest.

DB:2.92:Trouble Adding Virtual Server Host 1c

I have set up VMM 08 on Server 2008, and the patches are up to date. I was able to add a brand new Hyper-V host with no trouble at all. However, when I try to add a Windows 2003 R2, SP2 server running Virtual Server R2 as a host, the VMM service stops and it fails to add the host. One difference between the Hyper-V server and the Virtual Server is that Hyper-V has no guests yet, while the Virtual Server box has about 20 guests. It doesn't seem as though this would matter. Are there any needed prerequisites such as patches for Virtual Server hosts? There are 2 patches that are needed for Hyper-V, but I didn't see any listed for Virtual Server. Has anyone else seen this problem or have any idea what might be causing it? Thanks.

DB:2.92:Trouble Adding Virtual Server Host 1c

I tried installing the agent on the host manually and was unsuccessful.  The first error message was that Hardware Mgmt. wasn't installed, so I installed that component.  (By the way, is there a list of prerequisites for hosts somewhere?)  After that it still failed with a message saying to check for policy settings which would block WinRM, even though there are no such policies and the WinRM service was running.  So there seems to be a system problem on the host that is interfering with the install.

DB:2.92:Cannot Add Host To Virtual Center pa

Hello,

I have a new installation of Virtual Center, with licensing server configured on the same host. Running great!

I have just finished installing ESX Server 3.0 on a new server. Runnin Great!

I am now trying to add the new host to Virtual Center using the VI client. Not so greate.

I can get through the 'Add Host' wizard, then after confirming the settings, etc, I get the following error:

"There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation"

The Admin - Licenses tab in the VI client show that I have 16 remaining licenses for ESX Server Standard out of 16 total.

This is the evaluation version, which I just downloaded 7/31.

I need to get this going to do some validation testing to finish winning over some senior devs, once this is done we'll be BUYING!

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,

Mike
