    In SQL 2005 is there a way to select columns based on patterns within the column names?  For example I have a view with many columns in it but I want to create a dataset that only contains a few of these columns.  The columns I'm interested in have a common and unique naming convention.  So if my columns were as follows:table.columngroup1.colum1table.columngroup1.colum2table.columngroup1.colum3table.columngroup2.colum1table.columngroup2.colum2table.columngroup3.colum1table.columngroup3.colum2table.columngroup3.colum3I'm interested in seleting only the columns from columngroup1.Thanks,Scott

    I managed to build the table I was looking for with your suggestion and some minor edits as follows:

    Now I just have to figure out why it's not building a dataset for my report.  I was doing this to pull specific columns from a view for a dataset for a report in reporting services.  Need it to be dynamic because this report needs to work for more than one customer.  However in RS, while the dataset executes fine and gets me the data, none of the data is showing up in my report.  I'll post something else in the Reporting Services forum.Thanks for the tips!Scott

    Pages can only sort a table based on one column? U cannot sort on column A, and on Column B (within column A)? This is a common feature of Word, OpenOffice, etc. but I don't see it in Pages. If it cannot do this, is there any work around or 3rd party solution?

    I have a report based on a SQL statement that has some static text columns like:

    The col_c does not show in the run of the page.

    The selected column info in the page definition says:

    Selected Columns: Username, , , Account Status, Lock Date, Expiry Date, , , , , , , ,

    no reference to the text field there and a bunch of empty commas links??

    I wasn't looking for a text box, I was just looking for static text. However, I tried that and had no luck.

    This Interactive Report region was originally created with a select * from table. I went back and modified that select * at some point to make it specific and that created this odd situation.

    Because the region was pretty basic, I just copied the SQL query, deleted the region, and recreated it, and everything worked.

    So there is some kind of bug associated with how it cleans up columns removed from the query in an interactive report if you start with a select *.

    lesson.. don't start with select * and than change the query. as I was changing the query, it talked about adding and removing columns, but it obviously got confused because the "Selected Column" attribute had all kinds of empty space in its data structure: cola,,,,,,colb,,,colc,,,cold

    those extra commas show that something wasn't right.

    sum(work)
    all fetched rows should be grouped based on projectid,date,Employeeno,billable columns within BEPL process(not using custom SQL)

    Requirement is : we need to filter this query again based on column in select list . As using AND / OR operator we are not able to give desired result ..

    As in our case we are filtering the above query based on :P9_SEL_JAHR and :P9_SEL_OE variables ther is further requirement that we can also filter the filtered given query based on column vaue so we can get the specific columns value through bind variables and can use OR operator between them .but the problem is coming on merging the columns where case with the given query ..

    As for example if we use this afer the query

    for the OR case the first query will be always true so it will not filter it baseed on column value and in case of AND the second query would return true ..so we would get filtered column value based on column bind varaible not the complete query result based on JAHR and OE bind variable.

    any way to satisfy these two cases within a single query ..suggesstions are welcomed and would be truly appreciated.

    In separate VO, without Partial trigger, it also just refresh the second column.

    I am using Application Express 4.1.1.00.23 and have created a report. What I can't seem to alter however is the order of the columns generated by the report.

    It's not based on the SQL query because for example the 'Surname' field is 2nd in the select statement but on the report view the Surname column is the last column.

    Is there a way of changing the order??

    Simple, Edit your report page under region click Report hyper link corresponding to your report.

    There you will see list of columns where you can order the report columns using little icons on the far right. remember to click apply changes after re-ordering the columns.

    When User select "Quaterly" in pormpt I want to see QTD in Actual and Target column and Indicator depending on these columns.

    Can anybody tell me how can we achieve this?
    I think I can achieve this with guided navigation but for that I have to create 3 reports.

    Can anybody have any better idea to create just one report and based on user input I can show/hide columns in a single report?
    This is mainly related to Balanced ScoreCard.

    In the request, you add actual (MTD) column, edit the formula, use something like:

    I have a solution (not very clean) but working though.
    You can create a view and skip all the columns you want and then insert in it. (you can skip all the auto generated fields)
    I tried it and it was working. rather than entering all columns names i created a simple view.

    Creating a view 'visually' with Management studio takes 20 seconds.

    I am optimizing a query and want to use function based index on certain columns.

    Can I use Function Based Index on a column with DATE datatype?

    Also in the query, in WHERE clause i am comparing a column value with a subquery, can an Function Based Index be used here.

    where recpt_dat between '01 jan 2000' and '31 dec 2007'

    1) You can create an index on a DATE column. You can create a function based index on a function that returns a DATE. A function based index requires a function, though, so you can't create a function-based index on a simple DATE column.

    2) A regular index on the RECPT_DAT column (assuming that is a DATE) could be considered for this sort of query. On the other hand, if you are selecting 7 years worth of data, the optimizer would probably correctly determine that using an index here would not be particularly efficient.

    3) Assuming RECPT_DAT is a DATE, you want to compare a date with other dates, not with strings. You don't want to force Oracle to do implicit conversions for a variety of reasons-- it is not performant and it often changes the semantics of your query (i.e. you presumably want dates between Jan 1, 2007 and Dec 31, 2007 not dates whose string values happen to come alphabetically between '01 jan 2000' and '31 dec 2007'), so

    I'm trying to use javascript to update a column (column 4) within a tabular form. I have a drop down select box that contains values that I want the user to choose from in column 1. Based on that value, I want to update the value in column 4 with data from a custom function.

    I'm unsure how to reference the columns of the tabular form in JS and to target a specific line within column 4 (although I guess it could just reupdate the entire column (4) with each change to any value from column 1.

    Any assistance on how to implement this in Javascipt would be greatly appreciated.

    Here is my example.
    One table would hold transactions with a product ID.  The ID comes from a product table where there are make and model columns.
    Ex.
    Transactions Table - Date, number, ..., product ID
    Product Table - ID, Make, Model
    Can I set up automatic databinding with this senario.  I could easily set up the ID column on the datagridview to show make instead of ID, but then I would have repeats of all the makes depending on what is in the database and I wouldn't be able to select the model.  Can I have two columns whos items in a combobox change based on the first column and databind that to an ID?  The first column would hold distinct makes and the second column would hold models within that make.  Then the result would be an ID.

    I do indeed understand that if I change the product name in any way shape or form, that all the records in related tables will be effected.  The problem is I am creating a replacement database that many many users use and over the last decade or so the current one has been corrupted with constant mispellings, incomplete records, etc..  Now my application could have all the values stored in it, but that is not a great idea.  So I am down keeping possible values in the database where only a few people know how to change them and a few people have access to change them.  Then the win/web/handheld apps can just get these values from the database. The product record will always be added to and never be deleted from.  I felt having an ID was a better approach then making the actual verbage the primary key on the product table because the things that are going in it are pretty solid entries.  It is going to hold possible shifts and crews for laborers for example. These cannot easily be in one column because reports can be based on either or, or both; and I don't like the idea of querying specific verbage when the client wants the capability to change it.
    Those are some of the reasons for this.  So my question is can I do what I am asking.  Have a trasaction table with an ID (that is a foriegn key to the product table) that gets broken up into two combo box colums, one based on another, and have those columns combined give an ID for the product table?
    I can get around this by writing code myself, but I am just curious if the built in databinding stuff would work in this situation.
    I also thought about making a make table and a model table, with a one to many relationship instead, but I am faced with similar problems when it comes to databinding. Here is an wxample of what is actually in the product table.  As you can see not every crew can work every shift.

    In answer to your questions.
    The advanced filter can
    a) extract to a sub set of the columns in the original data list. So if you had columns headed A B C D E F G in the original data the extract range can be any of those in any order eg. F A.
    c) tranfer the format from the source data to the extract data range, so if column F was formatted as currency with one decimal place it would have the same format in the extract location (this can be amended after the extract is complete). Any formula
    in the source data will be converted to values in the extract area. So if F contains a formula in the input data range only the answer will appear in the output range.
    It cannot
    b) Use output column names that are different to those in the input range. However once the extract is complete the column names could be changed providing there is no need to reapply the filter.
    If this does not match your requirements then you may need to consider creating a macro to extract the data.G North MCT

    I created a tabular form that allows for grid entry. I have several columns that are each based on an lov. Is there a way to tie the second columns lov to the first columns selected value, third columns lov based on second columns selected vale, etc? In the column definition, it is defined as select list (query based on lov), but there is nowhere to say submit (ie refresh). The columns also don't have an addressable name.

    I can do this with individual fields in a region where I can select a display type of select list with submit, but I'd really like to use a grid approach of data entry.

    additionally you could use HTML expressions. When editing your report, click on the column you want to use for displaying multiple data columns. This will take you to the report columns attributes page, there you can type in something like the following into the HTML expression field, referencing other report columns using #COLUMN_NAME# substitutions:

    #SCHEDULE#
    #ISSUES#

    this is assuming your column aliases are named BUDGET, SCHEDULE and ISSUES. You can then just hide the columns that you don't want to see because the data is already shown using the HTML expression.

    could someone please let me know if this is a this would be acheiveable in OBIEE 11.1.1.6.0 to sort the report columns on a dashboard based on the only selected dashboard prompts, like for example let's say I start date and end date's , Asset number# and so on as my dashboard prompts.

    When I select start date , the report column start data should be sorted by Start date , or whenever I select end date from the promot the report columns should sort based on end date and not the start date.

    Similarly for other columns like Asset Number# and so on.

    I have seen the logical column 'Sort Order Column' but have seen a dynamic way to sort this.

    Please advice if this is a valid requirement or could be achieved in any way. !!

    TargetApplication

    All the columns are LOVs, so user can select the listed values for each column mentioned above...

    Now the issues is,

    if the user select the value for SourceTechnologyService, he should not be allowed to select value for the SourceApplication column or vice-versa..

    And the same logic should be applied to TargetTechnologyService and TargetApplication columns...

    Could anyone please tell me how to implement this logic?

    for the column which you want to change dynamically , use formula:

    I have an updateable report with five columns. 2 columns are modifiable. One is a select list(Y/N) and other one is a text item.     Hi Frank, thank you for the response. I'm using 11.2.0.3.0. I have a excel spreadsheet with all of my tables(5k) and columns(27k). The problem is that when I perform a ctrlF for a specific keyword it returns about 200 results. It would be much more efficient to write a single query that returns any column with 'keyword' within the column name from *all tables.For example, let's say I was trying to find any column that contained the word 'blue' as part of the column name and I only had 10 tables. If 3 columns contained the word blue, then the results would be 3 tables with the 3 columns. Any ideas on how to best write such query? Thank you for your (or anyone's) input.

    I know that when you create text items within your page you can assign javascript functions to perform specific operations. Let's assume though, that you create the following SQL report..

    Now let's assume for arguments sake that I want to assign the value 5 to deptno to ensure it is populated and I choose to do this through Javascript. (I know it can be done easier than this but stay with me) Is there a way to manually assign the javascript function to the select directly without manually editing the attributes for this column. I've looked at the htmldb_item function but I see no parameters which would allow me to populate something like 'onBlur=this.value="5"'. This need is based on the requirement to select a dynamic number of columns and i can't very well manually update it's attributes since column 5 now could be column 10 the next time around. In this case it would be easier if a javascript function can be associated with the corresponding column within the select. If this cannot be done, does anyone have any other ideas?

    I have multiple worksheets in one shared folder. There is one master worksheet but I need to break that out into separate worksheets based on each unique value in a column named ModCategory (column V). So if I were to determine the unique values in this

    To indicate how many columns you want, use the Columns field.
    To use equal-width columns, select Equal column width.
    To set up different column widths, deselect Equal column width, double-click a Column value, and type a new width.

    To change the distance between columns, double-click a Gutter value and change it.

    I want to create an ADF table with search region. The database object on which the table is based will have around 90 columns, the ADF table will have around 50 to 55 columns, but only 10 to 12 would be visible initially; . User can select the columns he would like to see using View-Columns option.

    I'm wondering how does adf handle performance and loading of columns in this scenario? I know, adf only loads a subset of rows, and based on the horizontal scroll location loads more data, but does it also ensure that only the columns that are viewable are loaded? and when the user adds columns to view, it fetches the data for that column?

    What is a good performance strategy when the adf table is based on huge number of rows and number of columns?

    DB:2.61:Column Headings Line Up, But Detail Lines Dont. ms


    We've got a script to get a payments listing out of a table, the spool file is created and looks fine. However it fires up adobe acrobat and the report looks really bad.
    The column headings line up, but the detail under them does not, it appears to almost left justify everything.
    If a field is blank, instead of leaving a space for the field size, it brings in the next field adjacent to it. So none of the detail lines line up vertically, its all over the shop. I realise this maybe something to do with the way adobe works (v4). The other reports within the system, which use the same method work ok.

    But does the script look ok? Like I said, the spool file appears to look ok.

    Basic rule of relational design says that "thy table shalt have a primary key".

    Now assuming that you do not have a primary key constraint and that resulted in duplicates, you should still have a couple of columns that uniquely describes a row in that table.

    To select duplicate rows can then be done by joining rows with the primary key (same set of unique columns), where rows have different rowids (physical addresses).

    E.g.
    select
    t1.*,
    t2.*
    from table t1,
    table t2
    where t1.col1 = t2.col1
    and t1.col2 = t2.col2
    and t1.rowid t2.rowidIf you do not have a couple of columns (primary key) that uniquely identifies a row, then you do not have duplicates in the table - as there cannot be duplicates without having a means of unique identification.

    I have created a Report Region based on a SQl Query. In the query I have three columns that need to be within an array, but 2 of the 3 columns should not be displayed on the report. Therefore, I don't have Show checked for them in the Column Attributes of the Report Region.

    In my testing, if I don't display the columns that are within the arrays on the report and run the page process to insert records into a table, I receive the error of "no data found". In reverse, if I display the columns, my insert is successful.

    Is this how the arrays work? Or is there something I have not done correctly.

    Below is the query for the Report:

    Yes! I guessed right! The columns have to be drawn from the same domain, so it makes sense to compare them this way. This is a repeated group. A competent SQL programmer would have a normalized table:

    MOSS 2007I created a simple document library and simple custom columns.Some of them are lookup colums based on some lists I created.For these columns I want that some columns are required to contain information and in fact when I edit column, under Additional Column Settings I can see Require that this column contains information: and I can select radiobutton Yes.BUT .. if I create a simple Single line of text column I can't see any option to require column contains information.Where is it?Best regards.

    I've tested this out and I can see the Require that this column contains information option with every document library, list, and site column I tried to add.  It should be the default option that's selected.
     
    It is possible there's something weird going on.  Try creating a brand new web application with a site collection and see if the behavior is different.

    if you really have 2 separate term set for countries and cities then you will need to restrict value by custom code. Such scenarios often are better handled by single hierarchical term set (and single field): where countries are on 1st level, cities are

    property). So may be it worth to change architecture a bit?

    I'm creating a report in OBIEE where i want to give an option to the end user to select the columns whichever he wants to see in the report.

    For example I have the following columns in the report already:

    Address

    I want to give an option to the user to select 'Customer Mail ID' dynamically and see the column to be displyed in the report along with the existing columns.

    Through 'Column Selector' user can select a single column at a time, but if he want to select more than one column, how can we do this ?

    I'm not sure if there's a good way to do what I'm hoping to do, but I have the following situation:

    I have a data file which is the result of collecting measurements every second. There's a timestamp column, a status column, and then all my data columns.

    There's three different possible entries in the status column, "RAMP", "WAIT", and "READ". The general ordering of data by time results in, say, about 20 rows of "RAMP" followed by 85 rows of "WAIT" followed by 9 rows of "READ", which then repeats a dozen times. My regions of interest, which I would like to select, are the last 30 rows within each section labeled as "WAIT".

    Obviously, it's extremely simple to select all "WAIT" rows, or the last 30 rows of the entire file, but I can't figure out how to select only the last 30 of each section.

    Is there a good way of solving this?

Ifthe webpart connections you mentionis out of the box and still solves this, then it would be my preference to do that. Chris' response seems to do what I want; the problem is that we have a very restricted serverhere and we need to use as much standardtools as we can. I am not sure if I will be able to upload that code.

    An LOV, by definition, is designed to show 1 value (display value) and return another value (return value). Both these values can be the same if you use column aliases in your query (select val d, val r from ...)

    That Columns attribute determines how many columns are used to render the LOV's display values. For example, if you use a simple static LOV like STATIC2:1,2,3,4 and use Columns=2, you will get 1,2 on 1 row and 3,4 on the next row.

    Why do you want to use a checkbox based on LOV, do you want to have 50 checkboxes in every row's column corresponding to each of those table entries ? Wouldn't a select list do the job better in that case ?

    Hi, after playing around successfully with REFs for some time, I came up with a deadlock between two patterns:

    1. if I define an object table through OBJECT IDENTIFIER IS PRIMARY KEY, then I can use its REFs in other tables - provided that I define FOREIGN KEY or SCOPE IS constraints on involved columns.
    But I need to insert such REFs in a column without constraints, since they may come from multiple tables of the same type. Then I get "ORA-22979 cannot INSERT object view REF or user-defined REF". I guess that by "user-defined REF" it means PK-based REFs, as opposite to system generated.

    or

    2. I can define the object table through OBJECT IDENTIFIER IS SYSTEM GENERATED OIDINDEX, but then I cannot index any column defined in other tables through REFs to the above table: I get "ORA-02332 cannot create index on attributes of this column", while inserting such REFs into any unconstrained column succeeds.

    Manual says the indexing on a REF column is allowed if scoping has been defined on that column - it doesn't say anything about how the REF table has been defined.
    Is there anything I miss ? Thanks.

    My recommendation, and I believe it is Tom Kyte's as well, is to use relational tables and object views.

    I am creating a PL Statement for Better/Worse comparisions, and I have to show only three columns at a time based on User Drop Down Selections.

    Here is my Bex Query Out put looks like. The Rows part is "Structure" and Columns are "Cell Restrictions".

    Now, the CrossTab component has to show only Two columns at a time, based on user selections. Here is my desired output. User will Select either ' Avg' Rate or 'End Rate'. Based on that selction, Actual's will show in the First Column and based on Selection from Second DROPDOWN for Budget/Forecast/PY, the Second Column has to be displayed.

    Is there any DropDown Component or CrossTab Component Options are there to Filter the Columns based on User Selections ?

    Appreciate your help. This is the Crucial Chart for the whole Dashboard.

    I'm trying to perform an insert into a new table (user_action), where one column is defined as varchar2(2000). The insert is based on a join of two seperate table (from another schema), where all resulting columns have the exact same definition. It should created only like 30.000 records.

    The actual statemen
    insert into tab1 (col1, col2, col3, col4)
    select t1.col1, t2.col2, t1.col3, t1.col4
    from t1, t2
    where t1.pk = t2.pk;
    t1.col3 and tab1.col3 are defined as varchar2(2000)

    The problem is that, the insert stalls, when actually using this varchar2(2000) column. When not using this column (insert null), it finishes within a 1 second.

    Even the select statement stalls in sql stalls when using t1.col3, but runs very smoothly. Even the explain plan have no indication of problems.

    Try creating hash cluster indexes on both the columns.

    Experts,

    We have a requirement where i have to create around 180 columns based on an amount figure. which i have created successfully.

    Now i have to create same columns with 2 different types of fact columns based on Unit Quantity and Count Qty.

    I duplicated columns based on amount, renamed those as replacing amount by unit quantity and count qty.

    But now i will have to manually go and modify the formula of every column for quantities.

    Is there any way i can select the respective columns and replace the word Amount by Quantity in column formula tab?

    yes, create a udml file and run with all your duplicate logical tables the same number columns will be available it will save yr time

    You need to include type in your group by.GROUP BY gid, typeIf you just group by gid and one gid has more than one type oracle won't know which one to use, that's why type has to be part of the group by.

    How can i select columns of a table dynamically through a select statement if the column name need to be changed based on the value selected in a Combo Box in a different form.

    it's like select column A from table X if combo box selection is A, select column B from same table if combo box selection is B etc..

    Hi,
    I have to develop a report where the columns should be hidden based on the user selected values. Basically, I will have my dataset with all the required columns

    and all the fields are displayed in the report. But in the output, only those columns which user selects in the parameter should be displayed. The column names are passed as a

    single parameter which which displayes all the column names(seperated by commas). The User can select multiple columns.
    I believe I should write an expression for column visibilty for each column. But I don't know how.

    DB:2.56:Help With Formula/Placeholder Columns For Group Totals 8k


    I have select that is broken into 2 groups (a COMPANY group and a DETAIL group within company). I need to determine the COMPANY group totals based on values in a column in the DETAIL group. I.E. the column is a transaction description and can have up to 15 different values and it did not appear that a summary column would work for what I need. I have currently set up 15 formula columns in the DETAIL group and check the value of the REASON to accumulate totals and return the total to a PLACEHOLDER column (which is numeric and defined in the COMPANY group).

    I then report the Placeholder columns at break of COMPANY. This all works fine if I run only one company. If I run with multiple companies the Placeholder columns are used as a running total.

    My question is how do I reset the PLACEHOLDER columns at company break if at all, or is there a simpler way to accomplish what I need.

    Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    By replaceing the placeholder columns with summary columns and making the changes to the formula column trigger solved my problem.

    I appreciate you help and guidance as it has been 1.5 years since I last worked on Oracle Reports.
