we have a problem with SNMP versions between the traps that are sended by VCenter Server and the MIBs that Vcenter Server have installed.

we have VSphere 4 (Entreprise Plus License). We have installed a 12 ESXi 4.1 and one VCenter 4.0

    Hi,

Exchange 2013 does not support MAPI in the same way as Exchange 2000 - 2010 did. It uses only MAPI over HTTP. I think you have to setup BES using the EWS services from Exchange and not the MAPI connectivity

I am doing a research to compare the performance of FTP server between VMWare ESXi and Xen Hypervisor. I use Passmark to obtain the benchmark rating. Higher rating means that it perform better. However, I obtain weird result for VMWare as follow:

Number of Client Passmark Rating (ESXi)

    1 874.67

    2 892.67

    3 896.60

Compare this result with Xen Hypervisor:

Number of Client Passmark rating (Xen)

    1 263.19

    2 230.00

    3 184.45

It is quite strange for ESXi since the higher number of Client result on the higher rating. Based on my study, it should be otherwise? Anyone have any idea about this strange result?

    DB:2.96:Performance Esxi 5 ca

That rating is not total throughput but CPU rating. Here is my details result.

Number of Clients Passmark rating (ESXi)

    CPU Memory Disk

    1 874.67 534.40 486.08

    2 892.67 538.40 657.90

    3 896.60 540.53 680.20

Compare this result with Xen Hypervisor:

Number of Clients Passmark rating (Xen Hypervisor)

    CPU Memory Disk

    1 263.19 175.37 337.92

    2 230.00 165.04 320.73

    3 184.45 124.96 311.81

There is no network parameter because Passmark does not provide for measurement real network simulation.

Maybe I made a mistake when I measured performance of FTP server. So, do you have any idea on the best way to test the FTP server?

    Hi,

However, we have to migrate one VM to a cluster of ESXi 5 Host. We just wonder whether there will be any compatibility problem for runninng a VM with latest VMWare Tools (i.e. the one from ESXi 5.1) with ESXi 5 Hosts ?

You should be good as long as the vm compatibility level is not at vSphere 5.1 level ie. Hardware 9

Your default compatibility of a Cluster should be at vSphere 5 or lower to join that Cluster.

    Hi all

I've to configure monitoring on ESX 3.5.4 servers, 3 servers in cluster + VC in separate machine.

First part of monitoring will be VC + SNMP traps sent to monitoring system

Second part will be SNMP traps sent from ESX nodes.

I have a problem with monitoring processes and disk mounted on ESX hosts, I was planning to use SNMP traps sent from ESX host to monitoring server.

Below you can find my snpd.conf file

This is a simple snmpd.conf that may help you test SNMP.

It is not recommended for production use. Consult the

You need to edit the xnmp.xml file in /etc/vmware and remove any changes that were made So in the example below I had to remove the the community "public" from between communitycommunity

    /etc/vmware # cat snmp.xml?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?configsnmpSettingsenabletrue/enableport161/portsyscontact/syslocation/EnvEventSourceindications/EnvEventSourcecommunitiespublic/communitiestargets/targetsloglevelinfo/loglevelauthProtocol/privProtocol/engineid00000063000000a1c0a8e223/engineid/snmpSettings/config

After clearing the snmp.xml file you can setup the snmp with the esxcli command.

esxcli system snmp set -c rfapoll etc.

If you are remote you'll need the server, username and password parameters

Never tried it. You can try to add another disk controller based on any whitebox, such http://ultimatewhitebox.com/

Also, a firmware upgrade of the controller may help. Or try to install an older version of ESX (4.1).

    Hi there,

I may be missing something obvious, but I'm new to VMWare so go easy!

I'm trying to receive SNMP traps from an ESXi 4 host I set up recently (free version). The aim being to be able to receive alerts regarding temperature. The steps I have taken are:

    1. Enabled SNMP by using tech support mode :

vi /etc/vmware/snmp.xml (edited the xml to show: lt;configgt;lt;snmpSettingsgt;lt;enablegt;truelt;/enablegt;lt;communitiesgt;publiclt;/communitiesgt;lt;targetsgt;192.168.1.10@162 publiclt;/targetsgt;lt;/snmpsettingsgt;lt;/configgt;)

    /sbin/services.sh restart

    2. Installed Dell IT Assistant 8.3 on a Win7 workstation. Configured the SNMP service on this workstation

IT Assistant is receiving traps from many other hosts on the network, and it has detected the ESXi server. However the icon next to it is a (?) and I cannot receive traps. I have tried sending a test trap with vicfg-snmp to no avail. The current settings for the SNMP agent on the ESXi host, according to vicfg-snmp is:

    Enabled : 1

    UDP Port : 161

    Communities : public

Please can somebody advise where I'm going wrong! Thanks in advance....

    Hi all,

I own a HP Proliant DL380 G5 server with 5 SAS Hard disk. 3 HDD is running on RAID 5 with Win2k3 installed....the remaining 2 hdd is configured RAID 1...can i install ESXi on it? Please advise!!

DB:2.78:Install Window Server Vmware Esxi On A Same Server 83

    You have 2 choices.

    1. Install ESXi on the box. This will remove all other data and give you an ESXi box onto which you can install VMs that run Windows or a number of other OS. In order to use this, you will need another computer to connect to the ESXi box so you can manage it. REPEAT - THIS WILL DESTROY your current Windows box.

    2. Install VMware Server on the box and then install ESXi inside that. This will allow you to look at ESXi and effectively have a virtual ESXi lab to see if it does what you want. It would be foolish to try and run anything other than evals on ESXi hosted on VMware server. REPEAT - THIS WILL BE VERY SLOW!.

    1) How can I tell what version of ESXi I am running right now? I installed 3 update 3, but when looking into some other questions, I ran the update in VI. Am I now at update 4?

    2) Firewall - I've found some things that indicate that there is a firewall, or there may be a firewall, or there is no firewall. Does ESXi 3 have a firewall? If so, where is the docs for it? I need to know because...

    3) SNMP - Again, some sources say there is no SNMP, some say there is, some indicate there's something like SNMP that isn't really SNMP. I want to monitor my ESXi server with cacti. What is needed to make that work?

    4) Dell OMSA - And again... some things say I can run this, some say I can't, some say I have to use a customized version, some say OMSA is built in to update 4 (which is why I did the update mentioned above). What's the real story? How do I get OMSA working on my server?

    5) Updating - If I do have to install a customized version of ESXi to get OMSA ( I have an ISO called "VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD-35_Update_4-153875-i386_DELLCustomized-Ext" ), is there a way to make it leave my datastore alone? Or is there absolutely no choice but to move the VMs off, install, and then move them back on again? All storage is DAS right now... no SAN (yet).

    DB:2.76:Some Misc Questions 73

The oem.tgz file will add to the CIM providers that ESXi uses to monitor health status. If you go to Configuration \ Health Status, do you see your RAID controllers, fans, etc? The first 2 links are a bit old, but the 3rd details what has been added in Update 4. I'm not familiar with Openmanage but I would expect that they would have updated it to support ESXi via CIM.

    Hi,

I am new to Vmware ESXi. I am facing a problem in Fault-Tolerance.

I have two ESXi 4.1 hosts:-

Their hardware configuration are as follows:-

    ESXi 1 - Dell POwerEdge R300, 2CPUs x 2.999 GHz, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3113 @ 3.00Ghz

    ESXi 2 - Dell POwerEdge R300, 4CPUs x 2.833 GHz, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3363 @ 2.83Ghz.

I am using Openfiler as iSCSI storage.

vMotion of a VM from both the ESXi hosts worked fine for me.

But the Fault-Tolerance is creating a problem for me.

When my primary is on ESXi 1 and secondary is on ESXi 2. On Rebooting the ESXi 1 (without entering the maintainance mode) the secondary VM on ESXi 2 immediately becomes primary and when the ESXi 1 is up the secondary VM gets restart on it without any manual intervention.

But When my primary is on ESXi 2 and secondary is on ESXi 1. On Rebooting the ESXi 2 (without entering the maintainance mode) the secondary VM on ESXi 1 immediately becomes primary. Now when the ESXi 2 is up the secondary VM does not start on it. ESXi 1 shows an error that "vCenter cannot start the secondary VM. Reason: Cannot complete login to secondary host." The Virtual machine tab on the ESXi 2 shows the status of the VM as normal. But disabling and then enabling the FT on the VM starts the secondary VM on the ESXi 2.

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:2.73:Secondary Vm Not Starting In Fault-Tolerance k7

    Thanks Chad for replying.

I am using CentOS(64 bit) as my VM.

I ran SiteSurvey on my set-up. All the tests passed but still the report says "All ESX hosts in this cluster have CPUs capable of supporting FT, but not all CPUs can be clustered together."

Is there a way to know why all CPUs can not be clustered together?

You're right. ESXi has to be licensed for it being able to send SNMP traps.

You might have read it in the "VMware ESXi/ESX 4.1 and ESXi 5.0 Comparison" chart here: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2005377

Since RCLI is read-only again there is no way to enable SNMP remotely. However the following "unsupported" mode still works:

    1. Edit /etc/vmware/snmp.xml

    lt;configgt;lt;snmpSettingsgt;lt;enablegt;truelt;/enablegt;lt;communitiesgt;publiclt;/communitiesgt;lt;targetsgt;targethost@port communitylt;/targetsgt;lt;/snmpSettingsgt;lt;/configgt;

    2. /sbin/services.sh restart

    3. Verify test your settings with vicfg-snmp

Now unfortunately, I need the MIBs.

Would you happen to know where they are?

    best regards,

    DB:2.70:Snmp-Server On Wan d1

This would depend on what you are soliciting via snmp. If you request data that is return say a large cam or routing table or you walk the entire mib tree for a device, etc., then performance could take a momentry hit while that data is processed. Other factors will included the number of devices managed over said link, how often and what is polled, etc. So you may want to do a test run to see what the impact may be since you are on a slow link. If not polling repetitively in short intervals, it should be doable over this link.

DB:2.70:Get-Vmhostsnmp Cmd Shows No Result kk

Login to your host via ssh and check the `esxcli system snmp get` command. Do you receive an error instead of a list of SNMP service values? If so that is your problem, mine was:

"Community string was not specified in trap target: A.B.C.D"

It turned that while adding a target with Set-VMHostSnmp somehow it took the -TargetHost but did not properly set the -TargetCommunity. Even though I received an error it appears it still changed the /etc/vmware/snmp.xml file. Specifically setting a target without its port and community (eg. targets192.168.1.1/targets instead of targets192.168.1.1@162 public/targets). This appeared to lock every form of snmp management (PowerCLI, vSphere CLI/vicfg-snmp esxcli). When I attempted to perform a factory reset with `esxcli system snmp set --reset` it still errors about the target missing its community, and then fails to reset properly. I had to manually edit the config file to repair (or just remove the target) and then restart snmpd. Afterwords the error is cleared up and you can once again perform a Get-VMHostSnmp and store the object within PowerCLI.

However seeing as there was an issue in PowerCLI that somehow set an invalid configuration, I decided to instead use `esxcli system snmp {cmd} [cmd options]` to configure any ESXi VM Host with SNMP service/configuration issues.

    Hope this helps,

    Trevor

You don't need to install anything on vmwareESXi Host, Esxi hosts uses special technolgoy called CIM its same as snmp oid

all you have to do is install pyweb module on nagios box it gather information from cif and shows you on your nagios server

I have a VMware cluster running on a blade server and all but one of the HOSTS report this error Alert Host IPMI System Event Log status. I did a Google search and came up with this fix VMware KB: The Host IPMI System Event Log Status alarm is triggered repeatedly in VMware vCenter Server 4.x and 5.x In step 4 i get this The system event log is empty. Any help with this would be great.

    Resolution
To determine why the log has filled up, investigate the hardware.

To resolve this issue, stop the alarm from triggering repeatedly and clear the IPMI System Event log and reset the sensors.

To clear the log and reset the sensors:
Open vCenter Server using vSphere Client. In the vCenter Inventory, select the ESXi/ESX host.Click the Hardware Status tab.Click System Event log under View.Click Reset Event Log. The red alert is removed from the System Event log.Click Reset Sensors to reset the host sensors.Introduced in ESXi 5.1 Update 2 (Build Number: 1483097) and ESXi 5.5 Patch 1 (Build Number: 1474528), there is a new localcli command line to clear the IPMI SEL logs:localcli hardware ipmi sel clearTo execute this command on the ESXi 5.1 or 5.5 host:Connect to the ESXi host via SSH. Procura que la hora de tu Host Hardware sea la correcta, modifica y guardala, la hora de tu vcenter server, la hora del software esxi ntp este bien sincronizada....

To clear the IPMI System Event.log file and reset the sensors:
Open vCenter Server using vSphere Client. In the vCenter Inventory, select the ESXi/ESX host.Click the Hardware Status tab.Click System Event log under View.Click Reset Event Log. The red alert is removed from the System Event log.Click Reset Sensors to reset the host sensors.

Above is giving me problems, when I try to start "snmp" on Esxi 4.0 free version, as suggested in this link http://communities.vmware.com/thread/151296 I might have a faulty or wrong license in order to get this to work.

Ive been trying to get an answer from VM-Ware about if I actually lack the proper license for the use of snmp on a free version or if infact it can have something to do with the fact that I installed with the Dell customized version of free esxi 4.0

I was given a license key for the free installation when I downloaded ESXI and I have put that key into the server as follows

Product: ESXi 4 Single Server Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (1-6 cores per CPU)

    License Key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

    Expires: Never

    Product Features:

Up to 256 GB of memory

    Up to 4-way virtual SMP

Can someone give me an answer to this?

    1. Is it possible to start up SNMP on ESXI 4.0 free version using "VMware vSphere CLI"?

    2. Do I need a different license for this?

    Best regards

ahh yes ofcourse, I already knew from earlier in this thread that I needed to buy something, and believe me, I dont mind that at all, I just need to know what to buy , since there are a sea full of different versions. I basicly want to find exactly what I have today (in the esxi 4.0 free) +snmp, that will due good for me and my small company. The free version was just installed in order to test the product at all, to see if it fits the needs we have.

Thanks for all your time and help

    Greetings!

I want to use Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor my ESX/ESXi hosts. Along with SNMP and the VMware API the Solarwinds Administrator Guide states that "VMware tools must be installed on all ESX and ESXi servers you intend to monitor. VMware tools is not required on virtual machines running on monitored ESX and ESX hosts".

My question is how does one install VMware Tools on ESX/ESXi 4.1 hosts? I've searched high low and the only reference to my topic I can find is on how to determine if the tools iso is corrupt.

The exact error message at the logon on screen is "No compatible network adapter found. Please consult the product's Hardware Compatibility Guide (HCG) for of supported adapters."

The host uses HP Virtual Connect for networking.

As an ESXi 4 host it worked fine.

Using Update Manager 5 it was then upgraded to ESXi 5 using the HP Custom ESX Image (HP-ESX-5.0.2-standard-iso build 914586) , which is when it lost the network adapters.

(A similar upgrade of a BL490c G7 in the same chassis worked fine)

When the Blade was at ESXi version 4.1 the network adapters showed up in the viclient as Broadcom NetXtreme II 57711E/NC532i 10 Gig Ethernet.

A look at Driver Versions in HP supplied VMware ESX/ESXi images http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/vmware-esxi/driver_version.html shows that net-bnx2 - Version - 2.2.1l.v50.1-1 net-bnx2x - Version - 1.72.54.v50.2-1 are both included in the build image.

VirtualConnect firmware is at version 3.15

Can anyone tell me whats gone wrong and how to fix it ?

    2) VMware vCenter server: 5.0.0 build 455964

    3) ESXi version: HP-ESXi-5.0.0

    4) MIB package version: VMware-esx-mibs-1.0.1-368563

I've installed the MIBS per the readme packaged. My NMS is picking up the V2 traps however, it appears that it is receiving an incorrect oid.

    Example - vmPoweredOff:

DB:2.65:Snmp Traps And Suspect Oids mx

Does anyone know exactly how the oids are genertated by vcenter and the esxi hosts? I'm still picking up snmp but I belive the both the agent and the manager would need a copy of the mibs. I see that there is a MIBS folder on the vcenter server located at: C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\MIBS. The files present in that folder are:

    1) VMWARE-PRODUCTS-MIB.mib

    2) VMWARE-ROOT-MIB.mib

    3) VMWARE-TC-MIB.mib

    4) VMWARE-VC-EVENT-MIB.mib

I could not find any mibs on the esxi hosts. Are these somehow embedded in the software? I have not yet tried other trap software to rule out the current snmp manager.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DB:2.65:Vmware Esxi 5.5 Update 1 Driver Rollup 2 Released Apr 24 2014 a3

I wrote up my findings so far:

    http://TinkerTry.com/vmware-esxi-5-5-update-1-driver-rollup-2-released-apr-24-2014

and am curious how others are doing with downloading and/or testing this rollup 2, that quietly arrived back on April 24th.

    DB:2.65:Vmware Esxi 5.5 Update 1 Driver Rollup 2 Released Apr 24 2014 a3

I should point out that this is not a full update, something like "5.5 Update 1b" or "5.5 Update 2"

This is also not for upgrade installs, see also ESX5.5U1-SuperISO-2-README.pdf

Here's more of the details of the new ISO:

ESXi 5.5 Update 1 Driver Rollup 2 (Includes VMware Tools)
    File size: 335 MB
    VMware-ESXi-5.5U1-Rollup_2ISO.iso
ESXi 5.5 Update 1 Driver Rollup 2 (Includes VMware Tools)
ESXi 5.5.0 Update 1 Driver Rollup 2 ISO with updated drivers (Includes VMware Tools). Boot your server with this ESXi Driver Rollup image in order to install ESXi with updated drivers. ESXi requires 64-bit capable servers. This image should not be used for ESXi upgrades.
NOTE: After installation of the ESXi Driver Rollup ISO, VMware strongly recommends applying the ESXi 5.5.0 patches related to Heartbleed, a serious vulnerability in OpenSSL version 1.0.1a-f. See KB2076121 and KB2076589 for details.

    Hi,

Both these commands are unrelated and each cater to different purposes.

SNMP has a wide variety of uses typically associated with device management on networks. There are many articles about SNMP available on the web.

The "ip flow" commands you have pasted is related to NetFlow. NetFlow is an IP traffic monitoring technology from Cisco (also available with various other vendors) which can help you with bandwidth monitoring and traffic analytics. The commands you have pasted is just part of the NetFlow configuration. Read more on NetFlow from here:

I'm having a problem with speed/duplex settings with the Nexus 1000v.  I recently upgraded the VSM and VEMs to version 4.2(1)SV2(2.1a) with the VMware hosts on ESXi 5.1.  We're now trying to bring an ESXi 5.5 host into the Nexus 1000v and when migrating a NIC I get the following error messages:

However the ports on the upsteam switch are 10Gb full duplex and these ports work fine when used with the standard VMware vSwitch.  I tried setting the speed and duplex in the port profile but get these error messages:

sw-ohco01-n1v-1(config-port-prof)# speed 10000ERROR: Ethernet3/2: Configuration does not match the port capability.
sw-ohco01-n1v-1(config-port-prof)# duplex fullERROR: Ethernet3/2: Incompatible Speed and Duplex settings on interface

The other ESXi 5.1 hosts are working fine showing that they are 10Gb full duplex but this 5.5 host is not showing the appropriate speed and duplex and does not appear to be passing traffic.  I have verified that the VEM is the same version as the VSM as well:

3- If we want to use "VMware Data Recovery" is that necessary to also have Vcenter? or we can just install "VMware Data Recovery"?

4- Where should we install "VMware Data Recovery"? on current VM server on on another physical server?

Hi and welcome to the community.

    1) yes it is free, but you will still need to register, get the free key and enter it to the host

    2) check this out http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi40_upgrade_without_virtualcenter.php

    3) yes you will need a vcenter, you will need essential plus edition and also advanced and above.

4,5,6) it's a virtual appliance and can be install on top of the host. Check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtxGa2rb78A

DB:2.63:Trouble Installing Vsphere Upgrade + Free To Essentials dc

In the past an ESXi expert has installed an VMware ESXi 4.1 host for my company. That version was free and has already 3 running VMs on it.In december 2012 i configured a new VMWare ESXi 5.0 Host with 1 running VM on it. Last month i convinced my employer to buy a VMWare essentials kit for backup security reasons.

Now i want to update the 2 free ESXi versions. I was persuaded that it was easy to change the old key of my free VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor with my newly received key for vSphere 5 Essentials. But assigning a new key doesn't work. Possible explanation?I've downloaded the free ESXi 5 iso with one useraccount. Naturally i used the key from that useraccount. With another useraccount we bought the new key for vSphere 5 Essentials.

My conversion scenario would be:1) Upgrade the old ESXi host from version 4.1 to 5.02) Assign my vsphere 5 Essentials key to the 2 ESXI 5 hosts3) Install VMware vCenter on another 64-bit machine and install vCenter Server 5 Essentials to manage my ESXi hosts

    So here are my questions:

-Should i upgrade the old ESXi v4 to an ESXi v5, and do i need a Dell R610 custom made version of ESXi 5 or is a default made version of ESXi 5 enough ? (Vmware Easy Upgrade ESXI v4.1 to ESXI 5.0)

-Could it be a problem to change the free VMWare vSphere 5 Hypervisor key (from one account) with the vSphere 5 Essentials key (of another account)?

DB:2.63:Trouble Installing Vsphere Upgrade + Free To Essentials dc

Welceomt to the Community - You do not need the Dell ISO to do the install as long as the old machine is supported for ESXi 5.

Just replacing the license key is all you need to do - this change the license.

DSTAVERT is correct. It looks like the U1 is a patch not an upgrade.

You haven't specified if this host is standalone or in a cluster but make sure you read the tech notes that are related to the U1 vCenter and host issues. You don't want to upgrade yourself into a heap of trouble over the holidays.

With ESXi the Dell OpenManage stuff doesn't work like it used to with ESX. Before I used to be able to install OpenManage on an ESX host and then browse to http://esxhost:1311/ and view the hardware status etc.

Additionally when SNMP was configured correctly I was able to use Nagios to query the ESX host using SNMP to get OpenManage status on components.

This seems to have changed with ESXi not supporting set and get SNMP operations.

This link lists the steps required to configure SNMP on an ESXi host. It also has the following statement:

Server Administrator supports SNMP traps on VMware ESXi but does not support SNMP Get and Set operations because VMware ESXi does not provide the required SNMP support.

I do understand how to install the "Dell OpenManage Offline Bundle and VIB for ESXi". Once this is installed I then go to a Windows server that has the "Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node" (http://windowsserver:1311/). At this web logon I put the logon details to the ESXi server and then I can view OpenManage just like I did before.

Is there a way to use this "Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node" server to send an SNMP get request to and in turn it communicates to the ESXi server and then returns the information to me?

My apologies, I should have been a lot more detailed. I'll bear the blame for this, sorry for any confusion.

I am building a virtual machine on ESXi 5 using hardware version 7 for compatibility when running on vSphere 4 and 5.

The overall goal is to have a sysprep'd Windows 2008 R2 SP1 image with VMware tools that are supported and will work on both platforms, but mainly on vSphere 4 as it's our current production environment.

I would be making this on our production environment, but we are experiencing space issues that prevent this.

So yes, my original question was answered, but I do appreciate the addition heads up on the hardware version. Sometimes I don't throughly read the notes on the screens and just click next... but this time I read them and thankfully they were concise and informative.

    - 03/30/09

    - HP SIM 5.3 w/ Update 1

I have VmWare ESXi 3.5i installed on the HP DL380G6 Server and my virtual machines are working fine.

Now ofcourse, I want to have full hardware managament on the physical server, so that I can manage lookup information on the hardware components firmware versions inside the server.

I have seen that the Virtual Infrastructure client of VmWare provides some information on the hardware components of the server (like temperatures, fan speeds, disk array status, array battery status and so on). But it is pretty limited compared to what HP Insight Management tools offer.

According to the ESXi manual HP SIM documentation, it should be no problem to monitor the physical server using HP SIM.

So that's why I did, I installed HP SIM on a box and used the first-time wizard to set up the management module. I can see retrieve info from my physical windows server, but my ESX Server stays in the server list as 'unmanaged system'. I cannot retrieve any information from it.

There is no firewall active between the HP SIM Server and my ESXi Server, the version I installed is the ESXi Server with HP Management Agents inside it.

Still I cannot see any server info in HP SIM.

I installed the VmWare Remote Command Line tool to activate SNMP on the ESXi machine, as was told in the thread

    http://communities.vmware.com/message/1379674;jsessionid=87EED6317C27E5B4BD2D402003FE3ED1

However, vicfg-snmp.pl --server lt;your_hostgt; -E hostname@port/community gives me an error about a restricted version.

The info on configuring HP SIM with Vmware ESXi is cluttered beyond belief.

I have to say that I have literally spent days on this case, just to get these two pieces of software working together.

I can't believe all documentation says it should work, but no step-by-step guide is provided for it.

I hope someone who has done this in the past can give me the golden hint I'm missing.

    Thanks for any help!

You mean if I have root/mypassword on ESXi, I have to use root/mypassword on WBEM as well? I've done that, but it still doesn't work, no server info visible.

Is there some other windows tool I can test it with?

Can anyone please point me to kb or a video to enable and configure net-snmp on server ?

    Kind Regards

refer the below KB for enabling SNMP traps

    http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1008065

For Net-SNMP, i am not sure if that is supported for vSphere 5.0. Its better contact the 3rd party which uses Net-SNMP for monitoring.. they should have something to help you..

    Hi !

Using helps and manuals i successfully configured snmp agent and trap for al my hosts (esxi 5) and my vcenter (as i know it only supports trap sending)

i added the successfully to solarwinds orion npm 10 and selected pol for esx and give it the correct user and pass

al is ok but the problem is i do not get any detail and information about my vms

what i get is about vmfs, network cards and cpu ...

and as i searched you can not add any MIB you like to solarwinds (although it should have MIB for Vmware VMs)

Should I do anything else or it is not possible ?

    And by the way !!

What is the difference between ipmi or cim (when configuring snmp on hosts) ? i will need a brief about those ! thanks so much

DB:2.61:A Couple Of Questions On Snmp 33

I have 2 questions regarding SNMP.

1[/b] - I'm trying to figure out how others monitor NICs that are in a bond network. Currently we monitor a NIC by pinging the host every so often. But now with NIC teaming we are going to get a response to ping even if one of the NICs fails, that is wonderful, but how do I

know when 1 of the NICs fail. I've been going through the SNMP data but it doesn't look like I can determine true NIC status with SNMP.

How do others monitor your hardware status?

2[/b] - I am importing and compiling the MIBs for ESX 2.0.1 into Active SNMP.

    4 MIBs compile cleanly

    VMWARE-ROOT-MIB

    VMWARE-ESX-MIB

    VMWARE-SYSTEM-MIB

    VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB

These 2 compile with errors. The errors are listed below. Anyone have any ideas?

    VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB -

    Closed Input File: C:\ProgramFiles\CSCare\ActiveSNMP\mibs\VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB.mib

    Closed Output File: C:\ProgramFiles\CSCare\ActiveSNMP\mibs\VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB.mib.bin

    \# File : mibs\VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB.mib

\# Error: OBJECT IDENTIFIER: duplicated name vmID

    Error encountered during compilation.

    VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB -

    Closed Input File: C:\Program Files\CSCare\ActiveSNMP\mibs\VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB.mib

    Closed Output File: C:\Program Files\CSCare\ActiveSNMP\mibs\VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB.mib.bin

    \# File : mibs\VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB.mib

\# Error: OBJECT IDENTIFIER: duplicated name vmIdx

    Error encountered during compilation.

DB:2.61:A Couple Of Questions On Snmp 33

You can check the link status of a NIC by examining its entry in /proc/vmware/net/nicnameX/config e.g. /proc/vmware/net/vmnic0/config.

Hello, I installed VMware ESXi Images for HP ProLiant Servers 5.5.0 in a HP Proliant server ML310G8 V2, I got problems earlier because I used ESXi without HP support.

Today I Installed VMWare with HP customized iso, system finishes installation process then all looks it;s going well but after a boot up process and system loads devices and files, just when it performs a preliminary checks, it stops and show: " Memory size error: This Host has 3.84 GiBof RAM 4.00 GiB are needed" .

How I can Handle with this???

Unless you have memory to add to the system, search the Internet for esxi precheck.py for hints on how to start ESXi with less memory.

    Hello all,

I am wondering normally how we monitor UCS server( I mean ESXi).

The virual machine could be monitoring via SNMP.

vCenter could provide us system status.

Could we set up SNMP on VMWare ESXi ?  So we could monitor through HP Openview etc.

    Thanks a lot,

    DB:2.61:Snmp Target Not Saving m1

I use HPSIM to monitor our HP ProLiant servers and blades. I have enabled and configured SNMP on our ESXi v5 servers, but when I set the target for TRAPs, my target (the HPSIM server) is not receiving any traps.

After setting the target using VICFG-SNMP login stuffs -t hpsimserver@162/community, the return messgae is tht the target was set.

Upon running the -SHOW option, I see:

    Current SNMP agent settings:Enabled : 1UDP port : 161

    Communities :mystring

    Notification targets :

    Options :EnvEventSource=indications

If I ssh to the server, the /etc/vmware/snmp.xml file DOES show the configured target.

I have restarted SNMP and the server itself with no change in -SHOW results.

I used the June, HP build of the VMware ESXi 5 CD to install this and many other servers, all of which have the same issue with SNMP target setting.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

    DB:2.61:Snmp Target Not Saving m1

Using an IP instead of the server name made the target stick. It tested fine as well.

    Thanks a bunch MKguy!

    DB:2.61:Snmp fd

    Hi,

Does configuring of SNMP on Routers differ from ASA Firewall

On router it works straight forward with command

    snmp-server community 1@1 RO

    snmp-server community 1@1w RW

on Cisco ASA it doesnt works

    snmp-server community 1@1

Error Output - IP address doesnt respond to snmp query.

    DB:2.61:Snmp fd

In the ASA you also need to configure what hosts are allowed to poll SNMP.

    snmp-server host inside 192.168.1.56

    Hope that helps.
