    DB:4.51:Discoverer And Postgres c8

Can discoverer connect to a postgres database?

    DB:4.51:Discoverer And Postgres c8

it should be possible by using Oracle Generic Connectivity and HS (heterogeneous services) available in Oracle Database.
That requires use of ODBC driver for Postgres.
However, the discover repository must be on a Oracle database.

    Any suggestions??

DB:4.32:Error While Connecting To Discoverer 8j

    Hi,

If you are using Discoverer Desktop then the default location for the TNSNAMES.ORA file is BIDeveloperSuite Home/network/admin. This file must contain the connection details for the database you wish to connect to.

If you are using Discoverer Plus then the TNSNAMES.ORA file is located on the application server in network/admin directory in the 10gAS home.

The error message you are getting is saying that the TNSNAMES.ORA file that Discoverer is using does not contain the database name you are giving when you make a Discoverer connection. You can set the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to give Discoverer a different TNSNAMES.ORA file to use for its connections.

This is a pretty basic error - indicates that the tnsnames.ora file on the discoverer client machine is likely misconfigured, or that the connection information you have provided in your connect string is invalid. See http://edstevensdba.wordpress.com/2011/03/19/ora-12514/ for an excellent explanation.

    DB:4.27:Owb -≫ Discoverer sx

    Hello all,

I have a newbie question. I am working on the school project. I have already created several OLAP cubes in Oracle Warehouse Builder (I have installed Oracle 10g2, OWB 10g2) and I am able to make drill down operations on these cubes with OWB "Cube viewer". I would like to observe these data also with Discoverer to make better analysis, so I've downloaded and installed "Business Intelligence" including Discoverer (from here http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/101202.html )...

Can anyone give me a hint in several brief steps how to use the Discoverer to see the cubes previously created in OWB? I tried to run both Discoverer Plus and Discoverer Viewer but cannot even connect to the database (at http://localhost/discoverer/plus resp. http://localhost/discoverer/viewer)

    Thanks a lot

Great! As I do not have Net Configuration Assistant under BI Tools node (can be because of I did not install the BI Beans or something like that..?) I copied and pasted the string from one tnsnames.ora to another as you suggested an now I am able to login and create EULs and so on...!!!

    I really appreciate your help.

Hi all, I installed Discoverer 10g version and I'm using an Application User to connect to the server where's the Db is installed.
Every time I try to connect to the server with Discoverer Viewer or Desktop I have a curious behavior....

ALWAYS but ONLY the first time I try to connect I have the following error :
    - Failed to connect to database - Unable to connect to Oracle Applications database: invalid username/password.

If I try to re-connect again the second time it works perfectly !!....so, I think, there's nothing related with my .dbc file.

I tried also to write the ':' at the end of the user name....but it didn't work.
Into the pref.txt file doesn't exist a parameter like DefaultUserTypeIsApps to set....

Anybody have had the same "strange" behavior and found a solution or workaround ?

    Thanks in advance

    Alex

DB:4.05:Failed To Connect To Database Only At The First Time s7

Thanks for your answers first of all !
At the end I found the solution looking at the Note:307167.1 on Metalink:

Discoverer Plus 10.1.2 Fails with ORA-1017 Error On First Login Attempt Then Works On Second Attempt

This note is very useful but into the solution the point 3 is not correct !

    3. Modify the servername parameter to indicate the fully qualified servername.domain
    Example:
An httpd.conf setting of: ServerName my_servername.mydomain.com should match a Discoverer Plus URL like http://my_servername.mydomain.com:7778/discoverer/plus

I had this problem both with Viewer and Plus...so instead to change the server name parameter (into the Apache/Apache/conf/httpd.conf file) with my complete URL (http://gnvdev.ote.gr:7779/discoverer/plus), I just write my right server name:

    Example

After the installation of the Discoverer 1og server, into the httpd.conf file it was written automatyically: ServerName gnvdev

I just modified in ServerName gnvdev.ote.gr and both Viewer and Plus started to work perfectly at the first time.

I hope that this hint will be useful for you and others in the Discoverer forum !!!

    Best Regards

    Hi,

If I connect the server using Discoverer Plus or Discoverer View directly, I can Connect, but I can't use the EUL I just created.

    That's why?
Need I to upgrade my Discoverer component of 9iAS?

    Thanks!

DB:3.89:Oracle Discov Desktop 10g(9.0.4) Can Not Connect Discoverer Server 4.1.48 9f

    Hi
Oracle 1.0.2.2.2 uses Discoverer 4i (4.1.48) so even if you create a 9.0.4 EUL you cannot use Discoverer 4i to connect to it. Why don't you upgrade to 10g Release 2 (10.1.2)? This is fully certified against Oracle E-Business Suite.

If you really need to use 4.1 on your local machine and you already have some Oracle software loaded, you won't be able to do so unless you change the default Oracle home. Discoverer 4.1 always wants to go into the default Oracle home.

The good news is that there is a workaround for this, which is fully explained in a white paper that I wrote. You can get the white paper from this location: http://learndiscoverer.com/downloads/downloads.htm. The file is called Multiple Oracle Home and is a Word document.

    I hope this helps

    Hi All,
We installed 9iAS(1.0.2.2) on NT and it comes with discoverer plus and viewer version 4.1.37.
I had problems while exporting bulk data like 65536 rows to excel from discoverer viewer. Since this version is not supporting exporting bulk data oracle advised me to apply Discoverer 4.1.41.05 patch and i did. While applying the patch i stopped all the services and i checked whether dis4* is running in the taskbar and it was not but locator was running during the upgrading.
After installation i registered discoverer objects with OAD and tried to connect to discoverer plus and i got the following error.

Unable to connect to the oracle discoverer application server.
    -Wide area network connection failed.
Locator interface incorrect. Expecting version 4.1.10 got version 4.1.11.

Support group said i need to upgrade EULs(4.1.37) on the database to 4.1.41. to connect to discoverer components. Interestingly i was able to connect to viewer with the older version of EUL tables. I've no clue why it's using older versions of discoverer plus and viewer.

Rename the locator.ior file to locator.ior.old (or something else) and then restart the Locator. The locator.ior file is in folder $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/htdocs/discwb4/applet.

There are a few things you can check regarding this class of errors.

If you are an Oracle Metalink member, you can refer to Tech Note #139346.1 - What To Do If You Cannot Login With Discoverer 3i Or 4i.

Otherwise, the best place to start is the Configuration Guide. On a Windows platform, you can locate this from the Start Menu - Programs - Oracle Discoverer Server 4i - Configuration Guide. Chapter 2 will take you through the process of checking that the Discoverer Service is up and running, and that your session is configured properly and started.

DB:3.80:Failed To Connect To Database Error From Discoverer Plus 17

My customer has a worksheet with a ranking calculation in it. THe worksheet runs OK in Discoverer Plus and Desktop. However, if a parameter and condition are added to allow the input of a 'Top How Many' value and the condition says where ranking = :Top How Many parameter value, then the error 'Failed to connect to database' is thrown by Discoverer Plus after you start to run the query.

YOU're not really disconnected from the database.

I added the parameter and condition with Discoverer DEsktop and was able to run the query and get the expected results and saved the workbook. However in Discoverer Plus the same error is thrown. I used Disco Plus to make the parameter NOn required, then found that the error 'Failed to connect to database' is now also thrown in Discoverer DEsktop.

If you either don't populate the Top HOw Many parameter with data, or delete the condition and parameter, the worksheet will run normally again and return data with no error.

Has any one else seen anything like this; and if so, can you understand why it's happening?

    Julie.

DB:3.80:Failed To Connect To Database Error From Discoverer Plus 17

    Interesting problem.

Is it possible the parameter is being brought in as text and ranking demands a number (ie: TO_NUMBER)?

Also, he could always alter the condition so if he doesn't put anything in for an answer (ie: NULL) then it still runs.

Just a couple of thoughts ...

    Hi

So your dbc file has the same name as your TNS Names entry - yes? If not, you will need to alter either the file name or your TNS Entry.

Next, you did copy the dbc file from the database server and not try to create it manually - yes?

Don't forget that you let the system know where the secure entry is by setting the FND_TOP environment variable to point at the folder ABOVE where you created your secure folder - which by the way must be named SECURE. Thus, if your folder is here: c:\oracle\secure then FND_TOP should be c:\oracle.

    Best wishes

    DB:3.67:Connectivity Problem 3c

    Hi,

I assume you are not connecting to the eBS as you haven't mentioned it. When you connect to Discoverer you should see the Discoverer connection page that you use to enter your username and password. You need to select OracleBI Discoverer as the connection type and enter a valid database username and password for the database.

If you have never connected to the database using Discoverer before then you will have to create an EUL using the Discoverer Adminstrator before you can connect to Discoverer. This is a desktop tool that runs on a Windows workstation.

You need to add your connection details to the TNSNAMES file in your Discoverer home directory. In your Programs folder there should be another folder containing a shortcut to Discoverer Admin. In the same location there should be another folder called "Configuration and Migration Tools" and within that folder there should be an application shortcut to "Net Configuration Assistant". This will help you configure the TNSNAMES entries required to connect to your database instance.

the discoverer has 2 ways of connecting to the DB, none of them are users created by "discoverer" :
    1. using database users, so that the users and passwords are stored in the db (fnd_users)
    2. using apps mode, the discoverer users uses their oracle application connection string (user, responsibility).
and here the oracle application maintain the users and responsibilities.

    Devang.

Assuming you're in an Apps environment and your EUL was set up as such, what Michael suggests makes sense.

Just one other suggestion that can be missed by users, is that if you choose the option for only connecting to Apps EULs then you must, of course, put in your Oracle Apps username and password. Then with the gateway info correctly put in as Michael desribes, you should see a list of your Oracle Apps responsibilities presented (if you have more than 1 responsibilty in Oracle Apps assigned to you).

If you chose the option for connecting to databases OR Apps EULs, then on the sign-in screen, make sure you note the little check box below the info you enter. If you're going in as an Apps user then this check box must be turned on - otherwise it thinks you're putting in a DB username and it won't work.

So, either choose the setup option to be ONLY and Apps user or if you choose the option for both a database user OR an Apps user, then make sure the check box is checked when you go in as an Apps user.

    Hi
    I am running Discoverer 11g with E bis R12.

I am fine with connecting to Discoverer Admin edition..but not in connecting to Discoverer Desktop Edition.
    I am getting 01017-invlid username/pwd error..

I followed these steps except 5..
    (Re: Discoverer Plus Login Failed

    **********************************
    1. Create a folder called secure under your Oracle folder on the machine that contains Discoverer Admin

    2. Create a new environment variable called FND_SECURE and give it this value: c:\oracle\secure

    3. Get the dbc file from the EBS environment and place it in the secure folder

    4. Make sure the name of the dbc file is the same as the name of the entry in your TNS Names file. The easiest way is to name the TNS Entry the same as the dbc file or even copy the TNS entry from the EBS environment

    5. Make sure Discoverer Admin is patched to this level: 10.1.2.2 (4960210 recommeded) then apply EBS patch 5985072
By the way, the easiest way to apply patch 5985072 is to copy the files from the patch directory 5985072/files/bin to the Discoverer Admin (or Desktop) Oracle Home /bin directory (default location is c:\oracle\BITools_Home1\bin).

    6. Create these registry settings (back up your register first):
    Registry Key DataType Value
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Oracle\Discoverer 10\Database\EnableTriggers REG_DWORD 1
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Oracle\Discoverer 10\Database\DefaultPreserveDisplayPropertyForRefresh REG_DWORD 1

    7. Copy or update your TNS Names entry, making sure you have an entry named to match the name of the dbc file referred to in steps 3 and 4

    Hi,

The reason you are getting this error is that the database you are specifying in the Viewer connection is not in the tnsnames.ora file on the application server where Discoverer viewer is installed. The tnsnames file is stored in the Oracle Apps Server Home/network/admin directory and needs to be updated to include the tns details for your database.

    DB:3.54:Discoverer 4i To 10g Upgrade...Ora-12541: Tns:No Listener--Discoverer Admin 99

    I agree.

If you mean you're wondering why 4i (Plus / Viewer) requires a TNS entry then I'd agree with you.

In fact, there shouldn't be a need for any registry setting, any tnsnames.ora file or a .dbc file if using Plus / Viewer - on your PC. On the server that they log to however, you have connect files there.

However, for Desktop or Admin you'd always need this info on your client.

Yes, 4i does work on a 10g database. But I wouldn't use the combo in production because of the certification issue. To check certifications of various Disco vs Databases, you should always log into MetaLink and see what it says.

Also when you set up Disco Admin, you really should create a database user with privileges mentioned in the documentation who will be the owner of the EUL.

Using SYSTEM really is not suggested many logical reasons, the least of which you have to have the Oracle system password just for Admin maintenance.

Of course, this doesn't matter if you're not in a corporate environment and are learning the tool.

    Hi,
I'm working with Discoverer 10g(9.0.4) and apps 11i.

While logging in Disco.Admin by enabling the "Oracle Applications User" check box, I'm getting following error.

Can anybody tell em what would have gone wrong?

    Thanks

    Hi,

OK, then just make sure you are connecting with an Apps username/password, you are connecting to the right EUL, the FND_SECURE directory is set up if you need it and none of the Apps password profiles are used for this user.

I am running Oracle 8.1.7 Personal on Win98SE and have Discoverer Admin Edition version 4.1.37. When I try to connect to the database using the login screen that comes up after executing Disco Admin edition I get the error message:

    Unable to connect to: system
Failed to connect to database - ORA-12203: TNS:unable to connect to destination.

I have Tnsnames.ora file in Oradiscohome\Net80\Admin and also in Oradiscohome\Net80\Tnsapi and they are the same. This is what it looks like:

    Beq-local.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =

    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = beq.world)
    (PROTOCOL = BEQ)

    (PROTOCOL = IPC)
    (KEY = EXTPROC1)
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = extproc)
    )
    )

The Tnsnames.ora file that is in my Oracle database doesn't match the one above (which is located in my Discoverer program) but if I copy and paste it in the locations in Discoverer, it still won't connect. The file for the database - Oraclehome\network\admin - is:

    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =

    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = oracle)

    )

    Howdy,

The best way yo fix this is to add a System Variable called
TNS_ADMIN and point it to your TNSNAMES.ORA file. Since this is
going to affect all users in the computer all Oracle products
will go to this TNSNAMES.ORA file to get database connection.

The error that you are receiving is a Sqlnet Error which means
that you cannot connect to the database.

    I hope this assists you.

Pl post the output of the "set" command that shows the setting of the variables ORACLE_HOME AND TNS_ADMIN (these may be set in the registry too). The error indicates that the Oracle client software does not understand what you mean by "@hh1" since "hh1" is not defined in the tnsnames.ora file in the directory defined by the TNS_ADMIN variable.

    Hi,

It could be that you are connecting using an Apps username/password and have not entered a responsibility. Try adding a colon : to the end of the username.

If could be that your Apps username contains a special character e.g. a space, that Discoverer cannot handle.

Have you checked the tnsnames on the application server? I think the databases that you connect to with discoverer are actually connected from the app server in plus and viewer. Discoverer administrator worked because it is run on your local machine and uses the local tnsnames.

Please let me know the answers soon.

    Thanks in Advance.

DB:3.38:Confussing Between Database User And Application User In Discoverer 3k

    Hello
I think a database user should pretty much be self explanatory - this is a user account that exists in the database. This account is created by your Database Administrator (DBA).

The second kind of user that Discoverer understands is a user that exists inside Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS), formerly known as Oracle Applications, hence an application user. This user account gets created by the EBS system administrator.

Now, just because you're using EBS, it does not automatically follow that users will be application users. Let me explain.

Discoverer can be installed in one of two modes, standard mode and Applications mode.

The vast majority of organizations use standard mode which means they allow database users to access the system.

The only time that you will need an applications account is under the following two rules:

    1. Your organization is using E-Business Suite, AND
    2. Your Discoverer administrator has installed Discoverer in Applications mode.

Applicatons mode does not happen automatically, even if you have EBS, and you cannot install that mode by accident. You have to tell Discoverer that it is operating in that mode, provide some additional EBS account information, make security assignments and set users have to deliberately tell Discoverer they want to connect using an applications account.

May I suggest you get hold of a copy of the Oracle Discoverer 10g Handbook that I wrote. That book explains in detail the differences between the modes. I also have a free white paper on my website that describes how to install Discoverer into Applications mode.

    I hope this helps
    Best wishes

    Hi,
I am not sure exact reason but this is what I am thinking:

You are able to connect to Admin and Desktop tools but cannot connect to Plus/Viewer, so this is not Invalid username/password for the EUL user to connect to the Database. I think this is due to system or network delays that are normal for the particular environment.

    Hi Catarina,

Yes, you can. You need to construct a suitable URL with the username, password and database as parameters.

There is information on how to do this in the documentation for Disco on Metalink.

We do exactly this so our users do not need to sign in twice (we are not using Oracle's SSO).

    - Attempt 1. CORBA protocol : Failed to Contact to OPMN Hint: An administrator can further diagnose connection problems by running the "checkdiscoverer" script under ....../Discoverer/DISCOVERER_COMPONENT_NAME/util.

I ran the checkdiscoverer script and it returned no errors or warnings. all checks were successfull.

any Ideas? Where else should I be looking for possible clues to the cause.

    thanks in advance.

DB:3.37:Discoverer Desktop Error "Database Failed Connect" After Execute A Workbook za

I have a workbook from a database 'X' that want to execute in a database 'Y'.The EUL is the same in the two database. I was able to open the worbook in the second database but I try to execute the query and i had this ERROR :

"Echec de la connexion la base de donnes", Database connection failed in english, I suppose.

The query of the workbook (worksheet) use many "Business Area" for the result.

Can you tell me the cause of this error?

    Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.1
    ORACLEBi Discoverer version 10.1.2.55.26

DB:3.37:Discoverer Desktop Error "Database Failed Connect" After Execute A Workbook za

The timestamp was already different because I updated the table EUL5_VERSIONS. But it did'nt do anything, the error is still there.

But we find out that the condition on the query was the problem. It seems that a specific "Business Area" is not validate by Discoverer, it's why the worksheet query is not able to execute the query.

A temporary solution for this problem is to force the validation of the "Business Area" who cause the problem, we include this validation in a calculated items.after that the query was able to execute normally.

But it's not a real solution, because we have to force a validation to the "Business Area" who cause the problem.

    Thanks

DB:3.36:Cannot Connect To Oracle ( 4 ) Discoverer Database cs

I have downloaded the Oracle Discoverer Release 4 and after installation I tried to open it. I got to the screen when it asks for user name and password. I entered that and left the connect box empty as I do not know the exact location of the database which should have been installed along with discoverer. I get the message Failed to connect to Database ORA-12154; TNS; could not resolve service name.

I have double checked my user name and password both are correct still cannot enter.

I have just finished my Discoverer training and want to practice on the same database on which I was trained on, like video rental stuff.

    OS is NT4.0

    Please help.

    Nauman,

Your going need to setup a TNS entry so that Discoverer can connect to
a Database. Additionally you need to first connect with Discoverer
Admin to setup an EUL for your users. This is covered within the
Discoverer Admin Documentation, under Installation I think.

DB:3.36:Business Intelligence Discoverer Administrator Not Connect With Oracle 10g f3

    Hi
You need to set up your TNS Names. When you install Discoverer Administrator it comes with no TNS Names set so you have to do it yourself. Here's a workflow:

    1. From the Start button use Programs | Oracle - BIToolsHome1 | Configuration and Migration Tools | Net Configuration Assistant.

    2. Select Local Net Service Name Configuration the click the Next button

    3. Check Add then click the Next button

    4. Type the Service Name of the database you want to connect to, then click the Next button

    5. On the next screen, select TCP and click the Next button

    6. On the next screen, enter the full name for the Host name using a fully qualified domain name and then tell the system which Port the database is using. Click the Next button

    7. If you know a username and password on the database select Yes, perform a test and then click the Next button. While this is not a mandatory step it is well worth doing as it will show whether you can connect to the database.

    8. On the next screen, the test will either succeed or fail. If it says Invalid username / password click the Change Login button and enter a known username / password combination

    9. When informed Connecting... Test successful click the Next button

    10. Provide a name that you want to know this connection by then click the Next button

    11. When asked if you would like to configure another service name, select No and click the Next button

    12. Click the Next button again

    13. Click the Finish button

An entry will have been added to the TNSNAMES.ORA file located at $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin

    Does this help?
    Regards
    Michael

    DB:3.34:Discoverer Connection Issue a7

    Hi All,

I am getting below error while connecting to Discoverer Desktop Discoverer Admin..I am able to connect the Discoverer Plus. I am using the correct tnsname as I am able to connect the database but facing issue in Discoverer.

ora-12154:TNS :Could not resolve the connect identifier specified

    Thanks

    DB:3.34:Discoverer Connection Issue a7

This error is related to the network connectivity. You have to verify note the I.P. address of database server where your EUL is created. Update the tnsnames.ora in the $Discover_home/network/admin with the correct I.P. address/hostname, database name port no. of the EUL database.

    Hi,

Has anyone ever come across this problem. Any solutions?

Strangely enough, the Discoverer Administrator, Discoverer Plus and Discoverer Viewer connects successfully.

OS: Windows XP Pro 64bit SP2 (tried on Windows 7 64bit with no success too)
    Discoverer Administrator client: 10.1.2.48.18
    End User Layer Library: 10.1.2.48.18
    End User Layer: 5.1.1.0.0.0
    Discoverer Viewer Plus: 10.1.2.55.26

    Thank you for any information

    DB:3.34:Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.1 Cant Connect To 11g (11.2.0.2.0) Database 8x

    Hi,

That's odd. Maybe try enabling the DCE Diagnostics (as described in note 403689.1) to log the traffic to/from the database and then look at the differences between the 10R2 and 11.2 database. From what you say it could be something in the XP registry that gets set when you connect to 10R2 that is needed to connect to 11.2, so maybe check in the registry as well.
