DB:3.33:Pacman Backup For Independent Offline Installation ca

    Hello! Short question:

Is it sure that directory /var/cache/pacman/pkg contains alle packages, which are currently installed? The man page of pacman isnt clear about this.

Why I want to know that:Im preparing a install medium which contains all packages from this directory and a *.db file for this files, created with repo-add. That should give me the possibility to reinstall a fresh Archlinux, without internet connection? This will include of course only core, plus all packages from extra and community I have installed but that should be enough.Rationale: The new ISO files doesnt include [core], hence it is not self-sustaining/self-hosting.

    Thanks

After execute pacman -S xorg, pacman download all dependencies and freeze in 100% when download xorg and only continue with installation after ctrl + c

    DB:2.75:Pacman Freeze Or Wget Freeze ? 3z

If you are using wget with pacman (check your /etc/pacman.conf) you can add -t 0 -T 10 options for better retrying.
The -t 0 option will tell wget to retry forever and -T 10 will tell it to timeout after 10 seconds so in this situation wget should retry to download the remaining part of the file after 10 sec automatically. You can of course better adjust these options to your needs. This works for me very well.

I have been attempting to install and configure X on my new installation of ArchLinux. So far, Ive been following the beautifully documented Beginners Guide in the ArchWiki and everything has gone pretty well.

However, I am having a small problem with X. Here is a brief documentation of what Ive done so far:
    # pacman -S libgl
    # pacman -S xorg
    # pacman -S xf86-input-evdev
    # pacman -S mesa
    # lspci | grep VGA
[i]00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)[/i]
    # pacman -S xf86-video-intel
    # Xorg -configure
    /etc/rc.d/hal start

    Hmmm..

I think Ive might have been wrong this whole time, and that it IS detecting my keyboard!

I decided to go ahead and configure my users ~/.xinitrc file. I went ahead and created it with the following content:
    #!/bin/sh
    #
    # ~/.xinitrc
    #
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    #
    exec xterm

    Hi!

Objective: to get pacman to sync without going online, using locally saved packages, without using repo-add or pacman.conf server line.

-- I have a full running install.-- I did a base install from CD onto new USB stick which boots fine.-- I moved everything from /var/cache/pacman/pkg of old full install over to new stick same location.-- I copied loose database files *.db.tar.gz from /var/lib/pacman in full install to fresh new one, same folder.-- I did pacman -Su -Syuu whatver I could and still pacman not aware of ALL the correct packages in new sticks /var/cache/pacman/pkg

As I have not got this install online and as Im trying to do the pacman sync withough using repo-add or pacman.conf server line can anyone tell me what Ive missed?

ISSUE: copied packages not being found by pacman though theyre in right spot.

Hi, installed (via latest archboot) and got a working bootable USB stick with base on it.So, then I copied ALL packages from my old system over to the USB sticks /var/cache/pacman/pkg

I expected to be able to be offline and simply go:

pacman -Syu or -syuu and have pacman update all the newly copied in packages,Then be able to install whatever I wished without having to use pacman -U which is totally impractical.

Must have missed something obvious like perhaps needing to edit the pacman.conf?

I dont recall every having to do this in the past. pacman would find whatever was in the /pkgs folder locally.

So, easy one so sorry to ask. Just needing/hoping to save time on this one.

    Thanks!

    Folks;

asides my notebook, I also want to have archlinux installed on my home station but as I learnt yesterday it seems my internet connection is somewhat slower there. Unfortunately, the archlinux installation ISO is just around 200 megs at max, just including the base system but no X, XFCE, browser and the like. So I considering the idea of downloading all the files here and just installing them at home, but my archlinux experience yet is to be improved so I am not sure whats the best way following the Arch Way of doing things:

    - Would just dumping all the stuff in /var/cache/pacman/pkg to some medium and installing them manually do?- Is there a way of building a custom installation medium containing more than just base, libs, dev, ...?- What to read to learn how to get this done?

    TIA and best regards,Kristian

I recomend to take a look at this one: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cus … repositoryIt more or less remove the need for -Ud to get around deps, since it will behave just like any online mirrors.

    Hello,

This post has been moved to the Virtual Machine and Guest OS forum. For ESX/ESXi: Full image level backups of a virtual machine disk are possible without in VM agents if the virtual machine disk is a VMDK, or virtual RDM regardless of platform, however, if they are a physical RDM you will either need to use agents or something in the underlying hardware. For VMware Server, Workstation, Player, or Fusion you can do this from the Host OS outside the VM regardless of what is running in the VM.

It would help if we new the product in question as requested by scott28tt.

Hi,I think pacman try to install too much packages because of dependances... An example, when I want to install beagle or tomboy, pacman force the installation of evolution and evolution-sharp too... OK, no problems, try to remove evolution, pacman says evolution-sharp needs evolution, remove evolution-sharp?, pacman says tomboy and beagle need evolution-sharp so, I wonder why ?

On other distos, I have beagle and tomboy installed without evolution, why pacman wants to install evolution ?

    1. Install Arch Linux (just did a default installation on my old IBM T40 Laptop)2. Attach a network cable and tried ping ftp.sunet.se - success after some modifications (followed the n00b guide on the wiki)3. pacman -Sy to update repositories or whats its called4. pacman -S xorg (to install xorg)5. pacman -S xf86-video-ati (to install ATI drivers)6. pacman -S gnome (to install gnome)7. pacman -S firefox8. pacman -S pidgin

Are those steps kind of right or just wrong wrong wrong?

Is there a possibility to search with pacman / yaourt / pacaur / etc... for all local installed packages which have been installed in a certain period, e.g. all packages installed in the last 7 days?

pacman gives me the installation date of a package with:

    DB:2.45:Rman Offline Backup Recover 1x

Offline (cold) backups are a beautiful thing.

Life would be grand as a DBA if we could all live in peace and get by with cold backups.

When you restore using them, you recover the files and startup the database and life is happy again.

Businesses tend to mess things up.

They like to recover databases up to as close as possible to the time the database went down to prevent the loss of data between the backup time and the down time.

That is why on line backups are done, to recover to a point after the backup was run.

I just upgraded my desktop to Leopard (took over 10 hours with the filevault) and I am looking for a better offline data backup solution. I currently backup everything to an Iomega Rev. Tapes are not really that reliable. Every month or so I then do a DVD backup on the Rev. Always good to have a backup of a backup. Can anyone recommend a better offline secure backup solution than an Iomega Rev?

    Thanks.

    DB:2.45:Secure Offline Backup Solution? 8m

I have tried different online services for backups and have never found one I am totally happy with. I use Time Machine to handle my scheduled backups and then do manual backups of certain files on a regular basis.

For my iTunes I do backups from my iMac to an external every time I add new songs. I then backup the external on a weekly basis. Once I have enough new songs to fill a dvd I will burn them and add the disc to my stack.

Below the project description. If you are interested in doing this programming job, please email/pm me.If there are questions, please reply to this post.

Pacman Update GUIArchlinux (http://www.archlinux.org/) uses the pacman package manager. A number of GUI applications to control this package manager exist (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pac … _Frontends), but none suit our needs.

For this project you will need to design and implement two independent GTK+ applications: an Update Manager and an Update Applet. The Update Manager must be an application that guides the user through updating the system. The Update Applet must be an application which shows a systray icon. This application will check for updates once in a while and notify the user if there are updates.

Both applications must be internationalized/localized and written in C, C++ or Python. The applications should have as little dependencies as possible. The applications must include installation scripts. The applications must be installed in compiled form. Any configuration needed for these tools should be systemwide. We do not need a gui for configuration.

Update ManagerThe Update Manager must be an application that guides the user through the steps of updating the system with as little effort and as little user interaction as possible. You are expected to first define the minimal amount of steps required, design the application and then implement the application (gui and internals).

There are two possibilities for this applications:1. You develop it from scratch.2. You modify the gnome update manager (used in eg ubuntu) to work with pacman.

We will rely on your expertise to decide which approach is best.

Update AppletThe Update Applet provides a systray icon which checks for system updates in regular intervals. The applet should have a tooltip showing the update status, and a context menu with a few options, such as Check for updates now, About and start Update Manager. You are expected to design and implement the application.

    Hallo!

Ive got the tiniest question; how do I create an extra kernel (a version of the one already installed) with my own custom config (with menuconfig preferably), without disturbing the Arch (and pacman) system all too much?

    Is it as simple as:

cd /usr/src/linuxmake menuconfigmake make modules_installmkinitcpio-something (Is it even necessary? Couldnt I use the same initrd as the pacman-kernel?)cp the-kernel-image and initrd-thing to grub-folder and modify grub menu

That way I would retain the generic Arch kernel for backup, as well as have an extra custom kernel within the same pacman-installation, no?

    Thanks in advance!

I really thought my days as newbie were over, but from the mistake I made I deserve to post in this section again. I wanted to give another distribution a try, so I backed up everything in my root and home partitions and formatted everything. Now Im trying to go back to my backup but I clearly missed something.I didnt have enough space in an ext partition to save everything, so I saved my backup using the tar command (and the -p flag). Everything was indeed saved, but I discovered later that there are things (capabilities) that tar doesnt save. So I recovered everything but the system doesnt even boot. The easy solution would be to use pacman to reinstall every package in the system, so that everything would have the right attributes again. Unfortunately pacman cant install packages (I accessed the installation with a chroot) as it complains it cannot calculate free space on the device. Is there a way to make pacman work again? I can recover everything from there.Well, at least I didnt lose any data, if I cant get anything to work it shouldnt be too long to just reinstall everything. Thanks in advance!

DB:2.43:Disaster Recovery For Sap Ecc 6.0 From An Online Backup kx

    Hi all,

We are testing our backup strategy in the case of a Complete loss of the

    system, possibly including hardware.

Our actual strategy is to do an ONLINE Backup each day from monday to

saturday, the database is in archive mode. We never take an OFFLINE backup

    of the productive system.

To do the test we have a testing server with similar hardware features as

    the Production server.

We are using the SAP Note 96848 - Disaster recovery for SAP R/3 on

ORACLE. If you see the point 2 it explains the following:

2.) Installation of the R/3 System

The installation of SAP software contains the software installation of

the database. The initial SAP database should be created again but the

SAP data should not be loaded.

Install the SAP system with the Oracle-specific system copy method, which

is based on backup/restore. This method is described in the system copy

guide for your Product/Release. Refer to Note 659509 for products that

    are based on Web AS.

So you have to install the system with the Oracle-specific system copy

method, which is based on backup/restore described in the system copy guide.

Them we looked at the system copy guide (System Copy for SAP Systems

    Based on SAP NetWeaver 2004s SR2 ABAP) on page 27 (4.1.1 Oracle-Specific

Procedure). Where you can see the following prerequisite:

    - The Backup must be done OFFLINE.

    Questions:

Since we don't have OFFLINE backups of the system only ONLINE backups. That means that in case of Disaster (complete loss of the system, possibly including hardware) we can't restore our system? So is a MUST or MANDATORY to always take an OFFLINE backup of the system a least one a month?

We urgently need to clarify this point. To chance our backup strategy.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Best Regards,

    Erick ILarraza

DB:2.40:Categorizing The Breadth And Depth Of The Arch Community... 8s

    Good day,

I need some quick advice from the Arch community. I am putting together a Wikipage that will list all the projects found within the Arch community, providing a description of each project, where it may be found, how to participate, and contact information. Additional details may be found here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tal … y_Projects

So far, I have nominally organized the Arch community into three broad areas: Official, Community, and Independent. An Official Arch Linux project would be something like the core software repository, or the bugtracker. A Community project would be the AUR - strongly affiliated with Arch, maybe even on the website, but not quite official. An independent project would be KDEmod, Arch schwag, or one of the Arch-based distros - strictly third party and separate.

Below is the list I have worked out so far with all the various projects categorized as Official, Community, or Independent. Please look over this list, as you consider the following questions, and post any thoughts you have on the matter:

    1. Are the three categories sufficient and clear? Should I add to, drop, or rename any of them?2. What project(s) should I add to this list, and in what category?3. What project(s) should I remove from this list?4. How should I categorize the projects on the Un-Categorized list at the very end?

Many thanks for your assistance,Luke Seubert

    Hello,

Today pacman is dynamically linked to a lot of libraries, so when an error occur about the update these libraries, pacman will not work any more

To illustrate, let me show you what I did.

    # pacman -Suyerror: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)glibc: /lib exists in filesystem

    # pacman -S glibc:: valgrind: requires glibc2.16

    # pacman -S valgrind --forceerror: extract: not overwriting dir with file lib

    # pacman -Suy/usr/bin/pacman: No such file or directory

    # ls/bin/ls: No such file or directory

Of course this is the worth case, because now glibc do not exist any more and the system will not reboot :-(

So I have two questions:- What I should do to avoid this situation ?- Is it not possible to link statically to have an independent pacman of the libraries update errors ?

    DB:2.40:Dependencies Of Pacman kp

Nothing stops you from doing so. You could always have a static pacman somewhere on your hard disk. This is probably not a bad idea.

I get the error * existst in filesystem a lot, say every third time I do pacman -S [package]. This makes me feel like something is broken. Normally I just check that no package owns the files, with pacman -Qo file and then go ahead with pacman -Sf [package], and everything works but it just feels very wrong.

My theory atm is that it is the packages I installed when I first installed arch are not in pacmans database somehow. I tested this by doing pacman -Q gcc, which gave the error package gcc doesnt exist. But gcc is installed and I know I installed it from the installation cd. Well I did a pacman -Sf gcc, and now pacman knows about gcc. How can I fix this, or will it go away once I have updated all the packages I initially installed. Are there any better way of fixing this?

[edit]I tested my theory with one more example, doing pacman -Q pacman gives package pacman does not exist. Well and pacman is obviously installed and it was installed from the installation cd. What should I do because I guess if pacman doesnt know about these packages I will not get any updates right? Should I go ahead and do pacman -Sf pacman?

Hey ! Previously when I used pacman -S kde, I was able to answer no to question like Do you want to install all packages from group kde, then I could choose yes/no for every single package. Now it has changed. After typing pacman -S kde theres only question Continue installation? and if i press no pacman terminates installation ! So if I dont want to install everthing what should I do ?

Creating local folios is great when you don't want to constantly upload your folios and occupy the data line.

but what about working offline? like in the train, on the road or during network outages like acrobat.com?

Creating offline folios still gives not the possibility to be network independent.

For a real offline solution and device preview, the folio builder should work without the need to log in.

Or am I missing something here?

I was wondering about something when I was looking at the E17 installation guide.

It says to run pacman -S e-svn. However some other sources that I saw and even translation of the same guide shows pacman -S e17-svn. For extras we are supposed to run pacman -S e17-extra-svnSo is it really e-svn or e17-svn for enlightenment installation?

    FarmerF,

Isnt SLiM great? I actually found out about it a couple of months ago, even though I am linux user for years. And I only saw it mentioned in Arch Handbook. But I think SLiM is the simplest and prettiest login. It doesnt have buttons for logout etc. But who needs them if you can just type halt, reboot, etc, right? I am glad to find another user with similar likes. E17+SLiM is light and pretty.

Now back to the subject. I will definitely try the script. Looks like it should be easy to point everything in the right direction.

    Guys,

I'm planning to migrate a EP6 on MSSQL system from one hardware to another.

I understand from SAP Homogeneous SysCopy 6.40 guide, there are 2 method for system copy - db independent method. i.e using Jload to export/import and (ii) db dependent - i.e using SQL backup/restore or detach/attach.

I wish to use the db dependent method. My questions r:

    a. I am still require execute the SAPinst to export/import the filesystem persistent data like SDM..etc via Jload/ javamigration toolkit/migration contoller ? Only executing the database copy will not suffice, I am correct ?

    b. If we need to do this, is there any options in SAPinsts to do so ?

    c. Alternatively, can I use an "offline backup/restore" of /usr/sap/SID/jc00/sdm on top of the db side backup/restore.

    thanks.

    DB:2.39:Ep6 System Copy af

    Hi!

You will have to use sapinst on top of the backup restore normally. There is some info in the SDM area that is only availabe on the FS, so DB-copy is not enough. The sapinst tasks you're looking for can be found under "Additional Software Lifecycle Tasks", as described in the System copy guides, which you will need.

A DB-copy plus FS-copy from the same time may work (or may not, I'm not sure) if you keep the hostname. If the hostname changes you will (at least) have to walk through the procedure of changing hostnames on WAS Java, which is for all I know not supported for productive systems.

Is it possible to take backup of database when the database is in OFFLINE?

    DB:2.38:Database Backup In Offline? ad

If the database is offline all you will need to do is copy the mdf, ldf(s), and ndf(s). The database will have at least one datafile, mdf, at least one log file, ldf, and possibly additional data files, ndf(s). These are the extensions of the
files and are what make up the database.
If the datbase is offline then there will not be any locks on these files and you will be able to copy them. To use these files all you will have to do is attach them from management studio to an instance of sql.

I think Autodesk frowns on this (they aresupposed to be the single source)- but ask your instructor or classmate to burn the install files to disk for you.

You will still need your own personal Serial Number (that you can get from theAutodesk Student Community, oops, you need interent access for that too)to Activate, and to do that you need internet access (at least email). Well I guess you have at least limited access since you posted a question here.

I dont think you are experiencing a error; rather, it is a feature of GDM. You should probably start it as a daemon in the same array where you put dbus. As for why startx isnt working, you would have to post the contents of your .xinitrc file for someone to help you with that.

Hi guys,im using a single rsync command for backup / copying my system. I skip a lot of directories, because they are big or arent needed to copy an existing arch installation. I found out, that the content of var/log and var/spool should not deleted entirely, becuase sub directories have to be there with specified permission/ownerships.

    This is my current backup-script:
    #!/bin/sh

    SRC=/nfs
    DST=/mnt

    sudo rsync -aAXv --delete $SRC/* $DST --exclude={/dev/*,/proc/*,/sys/*,/tmp/*,/run/*,/mnt/*,/var/log/*,/media/*,/lost+found,/home/*/.gvfs,/data/,/backup/,/home/*,/root/*,/var/abs/local/yaourtbuild/*,/var/cache/pacman/pkg/*,/scripts/*,/var/spool/cups/*,/var/spool/cups-pdf/*,/var/tmp/*,/etc/ppp/peers/*}

DB:2.36:System Backup With Rsync: Copy Directories Without Files ap

About /dev still being copied: There could still be static files under /dev on your regular root partition. In my case its empty. They are harmless. Yet still, one could use -x and explicitly exclude /dev as you are doing now.

About the rest of your question: SSH local keys, TOR data, CUPS printer spool. You should check all data under /var.

However, a error message: No Permission: Bad Installation message appeared. Have encountered more than 1 set with this problem.Have the search through the Roxio Forum and found 2 solution posted. First one is to uninstall Roxio and clean install again. However this is a preloaded program and I am unable to find the independent installation files. The second one is from Roxio Tech Team. Unplug all LAN connection and cut off from the Internet and try the activation by offline activation. Still cannot get the same message.Hope anyone who have any solution can help.

I know that, when you are trying to install archlinux to a different root pathyou should create the dbpath before or add your own dbpath as a command line option.

    eg.
    # mkdir -pv /mnt/var/lib/pacman
    # pacman -Sy base -r /mnt -v -y

    DB:2.36:Pacman - Alternative Installation Root m7

The existing directory requirement is useful imo, it prevents you for accidentally installing things to the wrong place with -r, because of user error (e.g. using -r /mnt instead of -r /mnt/newroot).

Lately pacman is acting a bit strange here. Some packages takes several minutes to install, even if they are small packages. An example of such packages is kdebase-runtime.

Yeah, annoyingly this is a security feature rather than a bug despite mimeinfo.cache easily fixable. Anyways, theres another option using libeatmydata

Rodrigo on AML tested it out:

Instead of a patch Ive installed the libeatmydata package from the AUR andadded a file /usr/local/bin/update-mime-database that calls `exec eatmydataupdate-mime-database $@`.

    Before: 21.618 s.After: 0.275 s.

    lanSpeed=10Mbps-Full

Again, back to cable. Unless for some reason you are forcing the device to 10Mbps (I wouldn't do that if I were you) the fact that LAN Speed is sitting at 10 Mbps shows that you have an issue with the cable.

I would replace the cable and the PoE if you have an extra.

Thanks for the response Amol, This is the final outstanding avamar issue we have. This past weekend we performed a DR with 23 VM servers and 22 of them them restored with no issues, the last one was this server I am referring to that had to use a client backup due to the independent disk. If I could have performed an image restore. It would have been much quicker restoring the VM and then doing a client restore of the S: Drive.

It looks similar to DR test. It is better to take RMAN backup whether you are using it or not. RMAN is the only backup for ASM.

I am not sure how comfortable it will be by restoring raw device from dd and performance improvement. Is raw device specification going to remain same?

Also take note of your cluster config, network and services.

    Dear Experts,

I am doing a homogenious system copy on ECC6 on windows plateform for STANDBY DATABASE .

    I am some queries

    1. I have taken the offline backup in sapbackup folder on source system ( backup taken on hard disk )

    2. I have installed OS on target system .

    3. Now I am installing Database oracle 10g on target system .

    My query is

I will configure this system as a standy database for disaster recovery

    1. in the starting of oracle installation , it is asking to give DATABASE SID

Is the SAP SID , database sid , schema should be same if we use the system as standby database ?

    2. I have copied the sapbackup folder from source to target system .

It will ask to restore the backup in the mid of installation .

what will be the step by step process to restore offline backup from DISK.

    pl. suggest.

    DB:2.34:System Copy Process dk

Fresh installation of sap on standby database server not system refresh . Is it ?

You need to have a basic installation of SAP and Database software. If you install SAP and database on DR system then this will allow you to bring the database online with SAP and can be used as production in case of disaster or emergency. DR has to be sync with production.

I was trying to make system refresh to create standby database server ( DR server ) . It is not required . am i right ?

You have to create a standby database using a system copy of your production system.

After fresh installation of SAP , I have to restore the backup of primary server to standby server . Is it ?

Yes, you need to restore the production database on DR database using brtools or copy the online/offline backup to DR system.

    3. Create the standby control file.

    4. Apply archive the keep database in mount stage.

    5. Apply archive to standby on regular basis.

You mean to say , i have to configure data guard for point 3 , 4 and 5 .

Yes you need to configure dataguard for DR sync. all these steps are already documented.

Generally, its just gonna be a LAMP server... How much RAM is recommended for that?At first when I picked Arch as the OS, I assumed that it would just have the bare minimum installed. I guess the template is somewhat customized. Totally defies the Arch Way.

They said that their Arch template is going to be updated within a few months, so Ill check their forums and check out the new template when its out.

That means the datafiles themselves are inconsistent during a hot backup.
