Hi,I realised that after backup up of normal data through storage node, networker will attempt to mount tapes and backup the indexes and bootstrap on the networker server itself. Is there any way to make the storage node backup the indexes and bootstrap?

DB:2.91:Backing Up Of Indexes And Bootstrap Using Storagenode. dz

Certainly you can try to direct it, but what would be the purpose? If saving indices on backup server represents load on the server I believe you have certain problems you wish to address much before. EDIT: I just did a test and indeed, NW seems to allows now to save index to storage node. Bootstrap and server's index of course will be still saved on server. Funny enough, nsrck -L7 required reboot for certain files to be recovered completely (!?) - not sure if this is related to this sort of approach or something else (I have never seen that before while doing index restores).

Doesn't work--- for some reason Time Machine will only allow access to the external drive from the Mac that it was connected to, but when that Mac goes bad you are SOL.

    Not true.

You can restore your entire system, per #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum. This is commonly used when an internal HD fails, or is replaced with a larger one.

If you get a new Mac, you can effortlessly transfer all your users, apps, configuration and data from the old Mac or it's Time Machine backups via +Setup Assistant.+ See #19 in the FAQ Tip.

You can also restore selected files from a different Mac's backups, per #17 in the FAQ Tip.

You can restore a non-boot drive to a different one. See #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.

Perhaps if you detail exactly what you tried, and what did or didn't happen, we can help.

    Hello,

Im new with EMC Legato Networker it seems that we're having a problem un backing up the backup server itself.

The following are the data that we've gathered to be able to point out what is causing the problem.

    Server Name: aap4bck1

Group: "Windows Testers" that runs daily at 8am.

    Defined save set: NMCASA:/gst_on_aap4bck1/lgto_gst

    Networker Management Console 7.6.1

    Library: HP MSL G3 Series

Whenever the backup run, the aap4bck1 client always fails with the following messages. All other part of this group was backed up successfully except for this one. I cant remember if this was only recently encountered because the administrator before already left.

I backup my data to disk and then have NetWorker 7.3 for Windows 2003 automatically clone to tape. The bootstrap report always includes the latest bootstrap information, however it doesn't include the clone volume until the next day. So my bootstrap report is always 1 day behind. How could I get NW to include the clone volume in the report?I thought about using a post command like mminfo -B smtpmail -s "Bootstrap" -h mailserver recipient dude@company.comWhen I try the command it says that smtpmail is not a valid Win32 application. Any ideas about smtpmail?

    DB:2.62:Bootstrap And Smtpmail 3s

In order for the information to format correctly with CR's and LF's, you must pipe it as a text file into SMTPMAIL.

    mminfo -B bootstrap.txt

    type bootstrap.txt | smtpmail.exe -s "subject" -h relay dns or IP [-p 25] -f "server@your.domain" "single email recipient or distribution list"

Note: The quotations are essential and, as I discovered, SMTPMAIL only allows one recipient to be specified. If you include more (either seperated by commas or spaces), no email is sent and no error message is displayed on the command line. I have not bothered to see if it throws an error using the ERRORLEVEL environment variable...

(I would recommend that everyone ignore any advice to use other mail programs as whatever email alerts and email logs you setup could very well break if you ever move your backup server to 64-bit hardware and install a 64-bit version of Networker. This happened to me as I had been very comfortable using a program I had gotten familiar with and suddenly had no email logs and alerts because the program was 16-bit only and it would not run in a 64-bit environment. The same thing can happen to 32-bit programs in the near future if Microsoft decides to stop supporting them. Every Networker utility included with the 64-bit version is a 64-bit compatible executable and they run out of the "Program Files" folder and not the "Program Files (x86)".)

Hi all.I've set Networker to have 2 backup pools: Full and Incremental (besides the default ones). They are not bound to any group and their selection criteria is chosen by backup level. When a full backup occurs, the pool Full is used and all goes well until the end (which includes saving the bootstrap and index). When an incremental backup is performed (with the Incremental pool being selected), all goes well until we need to save the bootstrap and index at which point Networker asks for the Default pool.I added the "Bootstrap" and "index" entries to the Incremental pool "save sets" entry but the problem persists.Anyone knows if I'm missing something ? If you want to fix this, you're going to have to narrow it down to find the problem. I'm happy to provide some advice, but you've got to do the work. You say both Macs have problems during "the backup" -- is that when one Mac is backing-up, or both? If you're not sure, try the procedure in the first paragraph of my earlier post.If only one Mac's backups are the problem, connect that one via Ethernet and run a backup. If you have to move it temporarily, do so. If the problem disappears, it's a WIFI problem. If not, it's something on that Mac.

I have a single ESX 3.0.1 box, with all VMs on Direct Attached Storage. No SAN, so no VCB.

Right now, I have the CA Brightstor Arcserve Linux client installed in the ESX service console. When I run a backup from the Arcserve server, the client makes a temporary snapshot, backs up the VM files, then commits the snapshot when it's done. It's all good.

For reasons outside my control, I am now compelled to replace Arcserve with EMC Legato Networker. I installed the "legato-networker-addon" package, then the Networker client. So far, so good.

Here's my question: how do I tell the Networker client to make a snapshot before the backup, then commit the snapshot after the backup?

There seems to be no documentation on this anywhere. CA has a 19 page PDF on backing up ESX hosts, with a big section on running their Linux client in the service console. EMC VMware have zip, zilch, nada

DB:2.48:How I Can Prevent Bootstrap Backup? dc

    Hi Alberto,

Yes this is by NetWorker Design , If your backup server backs up as part of a scheduled group then the bootstrap will back up as part of that group, if not the bootstrap will backup at completion of every group. As if savegrp detects that the NetWorker server is not listed in any active group (a group with its autostart attribute set), then the servers bootstrap is saved with every group. Even if you use the skip level , bootstrap will be backed up.

DB:2.45:Mac Mail Vs Entourage, Backup, Etc 8x

Having used Entourage for many years, I got used to using most of its features. Recently, for complicated reasons, I switched over to Mac Mail. I had tried it several years ago but found it not quite as useful as Entourage. Now, with .mac iDisk and Backup, I see the real advantage of the automatic backups (at least I think it's backing up my email when it backs up Personal Settings -- I'm busy completing a dissertation and haven't had time to check). With respect to email, one primary thing I don't like about Mac Mail is apparently no spelling suggestions when there is a spelling error -- I have to paste the problem word into another program to get suggestions. Another problem is that in Entourage, when I want to add an addendum to a message I have sent to a bunch of people, I just select my old message, hit "reply all" and it automatically sends to the same people, and not to me. When I do the same thing in Entourage it automatically sends to me (how often does anyone want to do that?????) and puts the other recipients into the "cc" function. Irritating!!!

But my greatest problem is that I really got used to using the Notes function of Entourage (it's where I store all my passwords, for one thing and BTW, this is several years old but I HATED Stickybrain -- what a malfunctioning hassle). While I'm using iCal for some of the old Entourage functions, I don't find anything equivalent to notes in my basic Mac software. As a consequence, I'm having to just leave Entourage always open on my desktop anyway, because I so frequently use the notes function. Am I missing something or is there really no Mac function equivalent to Entourage Notes?

I am seriously considering going back to Entourage at this point and just backing up my email manually. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Hi experts,

I've got a couple of AIX NetWorker (8.0.3) clients running on IBM AIX (7.1) cluster (HACMP). NetWorker backs up both the physical and the virtual nodes. Everything works well.

Recently we've added new HACMP clients. They are failing with the following message:

    cl-xxx-vip01.fqdn.ch:All 7184:savefs: nothing to save

One of the physical node is backing up filesystems associated with the both the physical and the virtual node. The second node backs up only its physical filesystems.

The file "pathownerignore" is not set on any of the cluster nodes.

Does anybody have an idea what goes wrong?

    Thanks Regards

    Hi Hrvoje,

you got it! AIX admin forgot to run the networker.cluster script. After completion of the script the resource groups and corresponding VIPs could be identified and backup completes successful.

Apologies in advance if i'm asking obvious questions, but i'm fairly inexperienced in Networker.

We've got our Networker Server with a VTL attached and a node with a physical tape drive attached.

I've been kindly notified from a previous post that the bootstrap has to be backed up to the NW server, OK fine but what I need to do is get the bootstrap on to a physical tape somehow whenever I do a backup to either the NW server or a node. I am aware that I can clone a group (with the NW servers in it) but this will only copy the bootstrap when that group is backed up.

Is there a good way of getting the bootstrap cloned whenever any backup takes place?

    Thanks in advance

    Ian

    DB:2.43:Bootstrap Clones fx

    Ian,

There are many ways to achieve this but as you are not experienced probably the easiest way to achieve this is to set up a group which only has your NetWorker server in it and set the saveset to something small backing up a file or small directory. Then set this to run on a frequency you require (interval in the group can give you one backup a day set to 24, 2 set to 12 etc). Set the group to do a clone to a tape pool which is only available in the Physical library and this will clone the bootstrap and the small backup to physical tape.

You do not need to clone every bootstrap, as long as you have one available that is what you need. Many people do this backup after the main backups have gone through (early morning) and again just before the backup window starts (so you catch nay failures etc which you have taken care of during the day).

    Cheers

After I setup an exernal drive on my network, I started using Time Machine. However, I did not know how slow my computer would become when it backs up and it backs up constantly. This is on my home computer, and there isn't that much irreplaceable data, I just want to backup documents and my photo library as they change. But it seems like Time Machine keeps backing up too much. I may not make any new documents or import any new files, and yet when time machine is backing up it says it's backing up several gigabytes; and it does so while slowing down my internet and computer processes. All I want to do is have it backup documents and photos/media. I know you can choose to exclude certain things, but is there a way to configure it so it only backs up the things that I choose?

DB:2.43:Configure Time Machine To Only Backup Changes? c7

    Try a program called: SuperDuper!
It is free, and there is a paid version with more features, but with SuperDuper! you can:Choose only what you want to back up, or like with Time Machine, back up everything.Unlike Time Machine, there are not any files to choose from by "going back in time" to grab a file that you did last week.
However, it will give a "snapshot" of what is going on at the time of the SuperDuper! backup. And, the backup is bootable You can start your computer, or ANY computer with the SuperDuper! backup disk by holding down the alt/option key during the boot, and select the SuperDuper! drive. You can boot from there and actually use it to do work.SuperDuper! - a great alternative backup solution you should check out. It is made by "Shirt Pocket." Here's a link to information about SuperDuper! and on that page is a download link: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
By the way, I use both Time Machine AND SuperDuper!Good luck!

    Hi members,

in the past (7.6.x and earlier) we used the bootstrap notification not to directly send the bootstrap via email (e.g. to root) but to temporary store the information in a file and copy it via scp to a monitoring server (all linux). Since we moved to NetWorker 8.x this seems not to work anymore. Here the command we have been using in the 'Action' field until now:

    /bin/cat /tmp/bootstrap.$$;scp /tmp/bootstrap.$$ special_user@monitoring-server:~/Bootstraps/Bootstrap; rm /tmp/bootstrap.$$

    Thanks!

    DB:2.42:Networker 8.0.1.1 Bootstrap Notification dz

This is correct - I found myself the same. Bootstrap workflow has been changed as those who didn't use "no index save" were having some big performance issues with mminfo -B which would run upon completion of the group. So, trick with cat no longer works in NW8. However, mminfo -B is now fast so you may wish to call it instead.

To backup individual databases, we need to change saveset accordingly. Please let me know if this is correct.

Also, please let me know how we can change the saveset, so that it backs up the respective databases. We tried with 'All', it failed.

    DB:2.40:Snapshot Backup - How It Works 97

Hi, I am wondering how do you backup snapshots from a storage. I heard you have to mount it somewhere on a storage node and then back it up. Also I heard that a snapshot is seen in the networker as a saveset. Now here are my questions: How do you technically "mount the snapshot" for backup purposes? is it something like mounting a LUN from storage and then you see this as a normal filesystem and you back it up like any other filesystem? Or does the storage node see "a SCSI target" and backs up "some stream of bytes"? I am asking because we have received a request to backup a farm of servers in hosting environment with 2 TB of files each. About 20 servers. And our concerns are about the amount of files on each server and the time networker needs for full backup. Currently we are backing up storage nodes with ~16 millions files with local disks of 800 GB and this takes 12 hours. I presume that on those 2 TB there will be even more files and the backup process will take much longer if the backup of a snapshot is like backing up a normal file system. Any usefull thoughts on this subject would be appreciated. :) Bartosz Maruszewski

    DB:2.40:Snapshot Backup - How It Works 97

I'm using PowerSnap. It makes a snapshot and based on your disk array you may do several things. When backing up to tape, snapshot is mounted to proxy server and from there backed up to tapes as file system.

Hi,a few weeks ago we had to upgrade our Networker Server (W2003) to Networker 7.3.2; and we have installed the JumboPatch for 7.3.2 already. There are a few problems we still have, the most important is this:Saving our dedicated Storage Nodes (W2003, AIX) brings often the following message in the savegroup-logfile: "save: SYSTEM error: Dedicated storage node cannot save remote data from client", where the client is our networker server.Restarting the group does well, but it isnt possible for me to restart the groups every day.We have a special pool for saving index and bootstrap of the clients - however, giving the clients the parameter "no index save" makes no difference.Any suggestions?Yours sincerely,Christian

We have a DPM server which backups up our Exchange using Direct Attached Storage. They want Networker to back up the DPM server so it can be sent offsite for disaster recovery. NMM is not an option since it doesn't support storage nodes. Bringing down the DPM application and backing up the files doesn't work since Networker cannot back up the DFS shares. Is anyone backing up DPM using either Networker or straight to an EDL?

    DB:2.39:Dpm Backup 89

Microsoft Data Protection Manager implements a VSS Writer to support backup of the DPM server. Only applications which interface with this DPM VSS Writer can successfully backup the server. For EMC NetWorker, the NetWorker Module for Microsoft has this support built-in.

As you note in your message, NMM does not today support Dedicated Storage Nodes for direct to SAN backups. This is a very high feature request for NMM and we expect to add this support in the NMM 2.3 release in 2010.

We use two alternating WD Passport Essential portable drives. Before the upgrade in software to ver. 2.x, we often had trouble getting larger files to backup. Sometimes, we would leave the drive attached overnight, and it would pick up the larger files; sometimes not. Sometimes upgrades improved this.

When we first updated to 2.0, we did NOT have the problem, and the most critical of these large files backed up fine. However, although this file is updated every Friday, the latest backed up version now appears to be April 12. Is there a way to manually be sure that the newest version backs up? Is there something I'm missing that may be interfering with the automatic backup?

Ok, here's the environment:All NetWorker installations are 7.2.11 AIX NetWorker server2 Win2k3 Storage nodesOnly the win2k3 boxes drive backups, the networker server only backs up itself, bootstrap, and indexes (of course).ADIC Scalar 10k tape library with 16 LTO2 drivesAll NetWorker hosts share all 16 drives (DDS) for a total of 48 devices on the networker server.Backups are seperated by retention time (and a few other catagores depending, oracle, mssql, ndmp, etc), therefore pools are configured by approx backup retention time for savesets in the pool (2w, 3m, 1y, 1m, etc...).Target sessions are configured to 4 on all 48 devices. Server parrallelism is 32, no group parallelism is currently in use.Approx 250 backup clients (AIX, Linux, Windows, HPUX, NAS (Celerra), oracle, mssql, macosx). 95% are GbE attached. Most of my clients are perfectly fine with this configuration, I see excellent backup speeds, and there aren't any issues in general. However, there are a few extremely critical hosts which have many savesets each and are very fast (EMC DMX 3000, 4x emulex lp10000, dedicated FA's on the DMX, etc). They run both filesystem and NMO (networker module for oracle) backups. So finally, my question is... Can anyone think of a creative way for me to force just these few hosts to monopolize a single tape drive for EACH saveset stream?I'd like to do this for both performance reasons (the hosts can each push multiple tape drives) and recovery SLA's, I dont want to have even the possibility of multiplexing between these hosts, they need to be able to be recovered in parallel. For the latter, I may just create seperate pools for each of these critical hosts, however this wouldn't help for seperating same host savesets to their own tape (drives). The only real option I see and will probably do, is to turn these hosts into DSN's and just set the DSN tape devices target sessions to 1, while keeping the client resources parallelism at 4 (or more depending on how powerful the host is) But even if I do this, is it guaranteed that my tape devices will adhere to the target sessions variable (which will be 1)?Comments, suggestions, advice? All appreciated. Thanks,Anthony

DB:2.38:How To Force A Single Client (Out Of Many) To 1 Tape Drive Per Stream 1x

I have been told that in the future target sessions on drives will become a limiting factor which may assist in the answer to this problem. You can also restrict pools to specific drives which may be the answer... However I think the answer here is simply having to add a little more pool configuration than usual. If a certain type of backup only uses one particular pool (defined both at client and saveset level) then when that tape is mounted nothing else is going to write to that tape - therefore only backups of that kind will go there (one stream to one tape which is what you want). The downside is - more pools, less efficient use of tape capacity. If the data going to these pools is large then it is not going to be so significant an issue. In the DSN scenario you give it is not 100% certain you will achieve 1 saveset to one tape drive; particularly as it is a shared environment you cannot guarantee that there will be, say, 4 tape drives available for your 4 save sets at time of backup and they will therefore distribute out the savesets and thus give you multiplexed data.

No, that's not resolved my problem.Folks, if you have the same problem like me you must installed this Microsoft 913100 hotfix for SQL Server 2000 package http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913100/ , and your problem goes away. The main problem is beacuse I have Operating System 2003 x64 and SQL 2000 x86, and Networker can't find file VDI.DLL in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server" because when I install x86 application (in this case SQL2000) on x64 OS you automatically create another folder "Program Files (x86)" which is results of missing DLL.

How do I specifically disable backing up mount points with Networker 7.2 on Windows 2000/2003? I have a very large drive F with another drive G mounted under a folder F:\mount. Networker will backup the first drive F, including the mount point that contains drive G. Networker will then backup the second drive G, effectively backing up the data twice. How do I specifically prevent backing up mount points, or exclude the folder that is my mount point (F:\mount). Thanks.

I believe that is not what NW should do, but then if you have initial 7.2 version everything is possible too. You could use directive to exclude parts you don't wish to backup.

I have been working on this for the best part of a day. All I want is to be able to backup the client to a single tape without needing to add anothr tape.

    networker 7.6 sp3

The scenario is as basic as basic can be. One backup server (BS1) with one tape drive. One client (client1), (eventually there will be three more clients.)

client1 has two directories specified in its save set

    /data1 and /data2

client1 is in the group client1_group and backups go to pool client1_pool.

I was told that under "save sets" in "client1_pool" I should put "All", "index" and "boostrap" on three separate lines.(but this had no effect)

    When i do a test using savegrp -p client1_group

It shows the everything going into "client1_pool" including "Probe" and "index" (there is a line saying "nsrim run recently skipping"). There is no mention of "default", and looking at it you would not see a problem.

However when starting the backup from the console (using the start icon), It works as expected backing up the two directories, but just when you think it has reached 100% the status bar goes to 66% and asks for a tape in the default pool. Annoyingly it just says somethign along the lines of " I want a default tape", it does not say what for.

I have added a default tape, and the backup completed. I got this message in the logs after the default tape it loaded.

"Added 'BS1' to the group client1_group for bootstrap backup".

I then get a summary of the completed backup along the lines of

    *****

    client1:probe succeeded

    client1:./data1 level=full 13 files

    client1:/data2 level=full 12 files

    BS1: index:client1 level=full 17 files

    BS1: bootstrap level=full 129 files

    *****

Turns out theat wasn;t the solution either. Soon as another client was brought online and we tried to do the same thing it complained along the lines of overlapping criteria. Anyway networker has beaten us. We have arranged for a refund from the suppliers (four days wasted on trying to get it to backup a client without wanting one tape for the data and one tape for the bootstrap). I recommend backup exec, for anyonewanting something "intuitive".

Networker looked a good product but "geeks only" I think. A quick google reveals it's known for its complexity (not surprising coming from Ever More Complicated)

By the way "notification to printer" -LOL. Would that be a dot matrix printer by any chance?

I'll leave you guys to your pools, clients, groups, schedules, directives and god knows what else.

    Greetings,

Is there possibility to backup NetWorker Console Server on remote device?

For example we have pool called Data_Pool (AFTD) on remote Storage Node, which backs up only data from clients and index after each client backup.

We have also separate pool called Bootstrap_Pool (AFTD), located on local NetWorker Server (roles: Server,Storage Node, Console Server, Client), which backs up only bootstrap from NW Server itself.

In this configuration for typical backup client all works fine. When I try to do console server backup (NMCASA:/gst_on_nwserver/lgto_gst) data is written to Data_Pool, but NetWorker can not backup index saying that it can not find any device for index backup.

If I modify Bootstrap_Pool allowing also index backup, then index can be backed up to the same device as bootstrap is.

Do you have any idea why during console backup NetWorker tries to back up index on local devices?

    DB:2.37:Networker Console Sever Backup 79

NW doesn't come as virtual appliance so you must handle it as regular application. Not sure about your env, but in mine due to high IO I do not plan to protect it via snapshots through hyervisor. Snapshot integration with application exists on Windows platform via writers and there is no such thing for NW - so, for me that is no go. And if you consult support, you will most likely get same answer. NW has rather good mechanism of protecting itself so no one stops you from protecting the box with snapshot, but application itself will still require nsrdr most likely. This may change in 8.5 or later as many things are about to change, but that's not present, but rather future.

I do not agree that VM is less reliable. Actually, I built VM server which is now more powerful and more reliable than my HPUX and AIX power horses were. You choose what fits application when designing solution and not other way around.

Having trouble getting recovery working. Client has been backing up for a while and now I just need to test restore operations from our existing Networker. I was able to get a restore completed with this command. However it either did not restore to the same place or did not restore all the test files.

    nsrndmp_recover -c clientname -S 1823246397

The client is setup like this:

    backup command: nsrndmp_save -T dump -M -l incr

    apps: DIRECT=Y, CLIENT=Y, HIST=Y,UPDATE=Y

Here is the setup. We have a cluster-mode setup that we are testing. So we are simply using our existing Networker to backup to disk using NDMP. What we need to test is restoring single dirs and/or files.

I have yet to find a great document on the restore portion of this as most documentation focuses on the backup side, which I think we have working.

    DB:2.37:Ndmp Recover From Netapp sc

Depending on your NW version, -l incr might not work (well, it should give you full). What you did is save set recover in which case -c is not needed.

If you want to make browsable restore, from backup server just do recover -c filer name and from there is business as usual.

I'm sure this is simple, I just setup a new drive on my jukebox, it works, I can do backups with it, I now have a Drive0 and Drive1. Sometimes the backups run on Drive0 and sometimes Drive1. I was under the impression that once I added this other drive it would start backing up different sessions or save sets/servers at the same time between the 2 drives. So While Drive0 backs up ServerA for example, Drive1 backs up ServerB. Is there something I could be doing wrong? I've tried playing around with the parallelisim and set it to 1 and even tried 2...but either way it didn't work.

DB:2.36:Backups Not Using All Drives 97

You read it wrong... actually, you probably mixed up server parallelism with jukebox parallelism. Set server parallelism to 12 for example and target sessions to 1. Then give it a try.

Christophe, are these two servers the only two storagenodes connected to this library? We had the same kind of problem, where a tape was mounted on the wrong storagenode and this was probably caused by a 64bit windows storagenode, which was only supported in NW732Jumbo after we had Fujitsu push EMC to validate this config. You may want to check hardware compat guide for this. One other this, you say that when backing up the database, you get a bootstrap backup of the server. This should only happen if the backup server is not configured in an enabled savegroup. To prevent the bootstrap from not being backed up, networker does a bootstrap backup at the end of every savegroup. This will lock the media database numerous times during the night and could cause a lot of havoc.Try creating a savegroup just for the backup server and run that backup once a day, or more often if you wish. This will leave you media database open all through your backup window.xander

    DB:2.34:Queries About Networker Bootstrap pf

How does NetWorker perform a bootstrap backup after every group runs?

As per my understanding, the Networker bootstrap will back up every time every group runs.

In the case that If there is two group running together at the same timeframe (eg: both backup start at 8PM), and the first group backup completed at 9PM, will the bootstrap backup kick start for the first group? or it will wait until the second group completed (9:15PM), and the bootstrap will perform the backup at one shot.

    How does this algorithm work?

What is the full command that I can verify the bootstrap backup status?

    Best Regards,

    CS

    DB:2.34:Queries About Networker Bootstrap pf

    Hello Chin,

Here i will give you a example, it might help you understand better.

Lets consider NetWorker server name is "abc" (which has only one instance) and placed under group "xyz".

    Scenario 1:

If this client instance for abc is placed under group xyz, which scheduled to start automatically every day(sheduled to run), then the bootstrap backup will happen only after xyz group completes. No bootstrap backup happens for other groups.

    Scenario2:

If the abc is placed under group xyz, which is not scheduled (or set to skip) to start automatically every day. Then after every group completes bootstrap gets backed up.

    Considering your scenario,

    1. Client A (first group) scheduled backup completed.

    2. Networker will perform the Bootstrap backup.

    3. Client B (second group) scheduled backup completed.

    4. Networker will perform the Bootstrap backup

This holds good, if the netwoker sever is not placed in scheduled group.

    Regards,

    Prajith

I don't think you will see that utilized until Avamar is not integrated with NW, but I would suggest to check with support to see what is the current state with RFE for such support.

DB:2.34:Best Practice In Backing Up Client Index? jz

    Hi Folks,

I would just like to ask what is the best practice in backing up client indexes. Currently, our setup is to backup the client index after every group session completes. However, sometimes we will encounter a problem and we can see that the index backup for a particular group seems to be hanging, and this will hold up the other backup groups. We are looking into the possibility of doing just a daily backup of the index and bootstrap on a separate group.

What are the pros and cons of these based on your experience, 1. backup index after group session and 2. separate backup for index and bootstrap?

Our Networker server version is 7.4 sp3 on a Solaris 9 system.

DB:2.34:Best Practice In Backing Up Client Index? jz

Well, I think I made a little confusion in my answer

When backing up indexes as part of the group backup it uses level 9 backup, and you're right, savegrp -O will save the full indexes (never used in production environment tough), thus allowing you to have minimum retention. I kind of mixed the levels in my mind before answering ... I think I'm getting old..

How can I find out what files TM is backing up to see if there is something I need to exclude?

This is bad news. I'll take it up with the Skype guys.

That may not be something they can change. What you can do is, exclude it from TM.

To exclude it, go to TM's Preferences and click+ Options.+
In the next panel, click the plus sign at the bottom.
In the sidebar of the next panel, select your home folder, then navigate to the file listed.
Select it, click Exclude, then Done.

If you still want to back this file up, let us know and we'll suggest an alternative or three.

Glad your TM is back on track!

(this will back up your phone in two places on the computer just in case theres a problem while updating so you can restore from the second back up if need be.)back up all pictures, calendars, etc on your computer (under your main user account on the computer)update your phone, and when the error code pops up, click continue. (yes, i was really nervous)when its done with the update it will come to the screen with an option to restore from the last back up of your iPhone. There are virtually no backup/restore apps for the iPhone.

The iTunes app backs up only with the the last successful sync. And, if your device crashes while syncing, then even the last available backup set gets corrupted. You cannot do a point-in-time restore or selective restore of files. You cannot restore data backed up to the "cloud" if the device crashes while you are away from home ....

Anyone have any solutions to all these shortcomings with the official way of backing up and restoring iPhones?

    Thanks.
    Aloke

    DB:2.33:Why No Backup Apps? 3z

"Sounds like what you want is Time Machine for the iPhone. I don't think Apple would allow anyone else to make that."

Why not? At least they should implement it themselves. All they have to do is keep mutiple instances of iTunes backup and then let the user pick which one to restore. Easy enough. Many users copy these backup sets manually as a workaround. Very kludgy and un-Apple-like.

Not everything needs to be synced to the cloud (although that would be nice). The user can be given a choice of what he wants to be able to get to when away from iTunes on his PC.

It is not that my iPhone crashes a lot. But all it takes is one hard crash (especially away from home) and a failed iTunes restore to spoil one's day/week.

I'll submit my idea to Apple at your link.

    Thanks.

When the group backs up, it takes 30 minutes for Networker to abandon the OFF computer's saveset.I have adjusted the group "Whatever"'s Inactivity Timeout to 2 minutes, yet it still takes 30 minutes for the OFF computer to be abandoned. Is there somewhere else I can adjust the timeout so the OFF computer is abandoned at 2 minutes??

    DB:2.33:'Inactivity Timeout' Question. 8a

You are probably already aware of this, but I believe that for NW the problem is more one of DNS than DHCP. That is, if NW tries to backup a client but can't get an IP address from the name server, then the backup fails immediately. If NW gets an IP address, then it tries to reach the address. And DHCP is registering and unregistering the IP addresses in DNS as the reservations are made and expire. That said, and if support doesn't provide a good answer to decreasing the timeout period, a script might help. I presume that you can manually ask DHCP to expire a reservation (sorry, I don't work with DHCP much). If that is true, you could query the NW database, using nsradmin, to get the name of the clients in the backup group, and then try to ping each client, and unregister those that fail to respond. This presumes that your network is able to handle a ping if the server is running. Anyway, if you did this shortly before the backup started, the backup should either find a client in DNS and back it up, or not find it and fail immediately.I was just messing with nsradmin and a starting point for such a query might be:print "show name\nprint type:nsr client;group:backup group"|nsradmin -i -In case you don't use unix, the "\n" in the command line above is just a new line.Good luck.

Is there a good strategy for backing up snapshots instead of the live filesystem?I think your only choices are to either use 'all' and let the client gather all the live filesystems, or name what you want to gather explicitly. There's not really any other choices. (This is a problem for some Networker admins even without having ZFS involved).

One option is to have a script maintain the save set list. At least then you don't have to do it by hand. You could make it smart enough to add in new filesystems, and you could easily have it reference snapshots instead of the live filesystem.

I know this case has been up before but haven't seen any good answers. Maybe there isn't one? When I have VSS enabled on any MSSQL client, incremental backup of MSSQL is always promoted to full backup if file backup (with VSS enabled) was made after the last NMSQL backup. I tried to add VSS:MSDEWriter=off to Save operations attribute (as stated in esg76468) for the file backup but that didn't make any difference. When I set the attribute "Save operations" to VSS:*=off for the file backup, incremental backup is made correctly. At 16:30 we are backing up the filesystem (full on thursdays and incremental all other days) using Networker Client for Windows (that includes VSS technology). I have a directive that skips *.ldf *.mdf etc.. The attribute "Save operations" are blank to enable VSS technology. At 20:30 we are taking SQL Server backup (full on thursdays and incremental all other days) with the Networker Module for SQL Server. Due to the VSS file backup with the Networker Client for Windows at 16:30 the incremental backup of the SQL Server is always promoted to FULL backup instead of incremental. If I turn off VSS (VSS:*=off) for the 16:30 backup that uses Networker Client for Windows the incremental backup of SQL Server works correctly and is not promoted to full backup.I want to be able to make a file backup with VSS technology with Networker Client for Windows but still be able to use the incremental functionallity with the Networker Module for SQL Server.Any ideas?Networker server is using Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 and Networker 7.3 SP4 Build 558.SQL Servers are using Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 or Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 with Networker 7.3 SP4 Build 558 and NMSQL 5.2.0.71.Ps. I have submitted a case to support, and got the answer that it isn't supported. You have to use the Networker Module for Microsoft Applications. But later I got the impression that they thought I was trying to backup the filesystem with NMSQL. While I'm clarifying that I thought I would get your opinion. Ds.

DB:2.31:Nmsql Not Making Incremental Backups When File Backup Is Using Vss 7k

Hello Johan,Be aware of a possible danger point in this approach.Microsoft sets up the SQL Writers (or any application writers) as they do so that a file system save will skip any SQL files. If the SQL Writer is disabled, then when the file system backup of a disk that contains databases or logs is invoked, those files will get saved at snapshot time, but without having been quiesced and made consistent by the writer. When the file system saveset is recovered, the database will have errors, which SQL may or may not be able to repair. Further, after that happens, the logfile stream will have been interrupted, so that a subsequent NMSQL recovery would not be able to roll forward beyond the recovery point: you would be limited to a point-in-time recovery to the newest NMSQL saveset.Thanks,_Scott

We were unable to restore to an RDB. In the advanced restore GUI, the check function reported the RDB as unmounted, but when we tried to mount it, NMM reported that it was already mounted.Turns out that powershell was returning a mixed-case server name,
and the module was generating an upper case name. EMC provided new binaries that corrected the problem.

We've been looking through the documentation at the [Sun Wiki|http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite/Backing+Up+and+Restoring+the+Message+Store?focusedCommentId=109740624#BackingUpandRestoringtheMessageStore-ToUseSunStorageTekEnterpriseBackupSoftware] regarding backing up the email system using our existing Sun EBS (Legato Networker) backups, integrated with imsbackup/imsrestore.

Are there any concrete benefits to using this method instead of straight file system backups?

We already have a simple tested method of restoring mailboxes for a user from a straight FS backups, which works well. We recover their entire mail folder to a new "recovered_mail" mail folder, which makes it obvious to the user where their recovered mail is, and makes it easy for them to find the message they're interested and easily deleted the rest of the recovered messages.

I'd like to determine if it's really worth our while changing our method of backups to the one documented in the above linked Wiki article.

Straight file system backups will not back-up account meta-data e.g. IMAP flags such as Seen/Deleted/Flagged/Junk, folder ACL's, folder subscriptions and so forth.Isn't some of the meta-data stored in the parent directory of the messages directory, and therefore recovered with it?With Messaging Server there are the store.usr/store.idx files that should get used if you were to perform a "reconstruct -m -p partition -u user" after the recovery of an entire folder. However the store.usr file (seen/deleted flags) is only updated periodically (refer to local.store.seenckpinterval setting).

Also when recovering using straight-file-system backups you need to be careful to not over-write existing messages. This is no problem for us with straight file system backups as our procedure always recovers to a new "recovered_messages_yyyy_mm_dd" (or similar) folder. The vast majority of our recoveries will be for single mail folders (ie, for users who've realised they really needed thse messages they deleted 6 months ago).

With the integrated backup method, how does it avoid overwriting an existing mail folder (or its messages) with the recovered ones? You can use the "-n" option with imsrestore to create a new folder with the ".date" extension if there is a pre-existing folder:
    http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite/imsrestore

Does it merge, replace or duplicate messages? My default imsrestore checks to see if the message already exists before restoring it. You can duplicate messages by using the "-i" option.

    DB:2.31:Bootstrap Backups 1m

    Hello,

I want to know more about "Bootstrap" type backups and if anyone can tell me where the Networker software is perhaps described using diagrams I'd be very happy. Any visual on the Networker library and how it stores information would be great.

    The problem is:

I have a save group that is called "Sunday Bootstrap - Very important" and it only does a full backup on Sundays with no incremental. Shouldn't we be backed up the "index"/"library" incrementally every day too? No?

Also, see my screen cap... it shows that it backups everything on every drive of the backup server. This doesn't make sense to me because it suggests that (even though it does not) it is supposed to backup ALL, like absolutely everything. What part of the Networker server looks at "ALL" and then says "Oh they just mean the index of everything that's backed up".

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Ugly picture

Yu can find information in docs. Just download them from powerlink. Perhaps not all data is in the single doc, but they have this pdf bundle which has all of them which makes it easy for search (if you run Adobe memory eater reader).

Bootstrap backup is backup which saves your mm and res directory (media database and resource database). It is esential for disaster recovery of backup application. When bootstrap happens depends on several settings. Index backup, by default, gets saved after each client backup. Bootstrap, by default again, gets saved when you backup server client. Paranoid settting, by default, instructs NW to run bootstrap backup after each backup if your server is not in active (enabled) group. So much about defaults.

I do not like default. So, instead I have created groups called index_1, index_2, etc... Each client I have (unique), I place to fs backup group and index group. index group is disabled from running and usually I keep 100 clients per index group. I also set No Index Save option on each of my scheduled and enabled groups. This instructs NW NOT to save index after each client backup. Some people find that risky - I don't (but ok, it is). Then, from cron, I run savegrp -lfull -O index_1 at X:00 , then savegrp -O -lfull index_2 at X+2:00, etc. -O is special switch for savegrp which saves only index for clients in that group. Plus bootstrap as bonus At the end of the day, when all these index groups have run, I clone these backups (I use dedicated pool for this sort of backups). As of NW 7.6.x I believe, savegrp -O is supported from GUI meaning you can schedule it from NW and there is no need for cron job. Some people like it, some not - it really comes down to what you find to be important. I do not like tapes to be loaded all the time for index backup. I do not like mdb to be locked during frequent bootstraps or mdb daemon being stressed while mminfo -B is running after each bootstrap backup. Thus I choose to do it my way. But this is just because I have very busy server and I wish this server to have some breathing space (I do some 45k different saveset backups per day). The only risk I run is to loss of index backup within 24h. I can survive that as I can always scan it if needed though I agree that would be pain if you have some 20k archive logs for example

However, I learned today when I opened up the Networker User for SQL that there are two SQL instances on that server but the Networker server can only back up the default instance.the other one is listed as servername\Solarwinds when I open the Networker User for SQL server. I am using MSSQL: (saveset) and nsrsqlsv.exe (backup command) to backup the default instance. How do I configure the client in 7.3.1 to see the other instance?

Hi all,How do i avoid all these bootstraps backup for non scheduled backups? E.g:I have a scheduled job for Monday till Fridays for server A, but on Monday i can see other backup jobs running like Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I dbl click on the job i can see that it is backing up the bootstrap of my backup server ("nsrserver:bootstrap"). How do i avoid that?I have read the admin guide : "Note: If the NetWorker server is not a member of an active group, the bootstrap is created when any group backup is run, even if the group has a level of "skip." However, in this case the bootstrap will be created only once every 24 hours, regardless of how many groups are run during that period. If you would like to create bootstraps for every group backup, you should include the server in the group, with a very small save set (such as /etc/hosts)."Does it mean i will need to add my backup server into the schedule job as well and just to backup the host file?

    DB:2.29:Bootstrap Backups? 1s

If you put your backup server into (an) active scheduled group(s) the bootstrap will only run with that/those groups, not any other groups. If you do not put your backup server into at least one active scheduled group the bootstrap will run after every group completes.I would suggest you run the group with your backup server in it last as this will make a backup of your media database with all the night's changes in it; if you run it first then run all your backups, in the event of a disaster the next day you will need to scan in the night's tapes to see what is there, not something you would want to be doing if you have a lot of pressure to get server's restored and back online quickly!

DB:2.29:Can I Control Backup Frequency On Tc sx

There is no way that a "normal" backup should run for 30 minutes....unless you are constantly adding new photos, songs, movies, or other heavy data material. You might want to download and install BackupLoupe, an application that will show you a complete record of exactly what is backed up on each pass.soma-zone: BackupLoupeSome applications like Entourage, Aperture, VM Fusion, Parallels and others try to back up their complete database on each pass. In addition to taking up a lot of time, this can fill up a Time Capsule very quickly.Once you identify the culprit, you can exclude that file or database from backups and back it up manually each day. The goal here is to have your hourly backups take just a minute or two...and not slow down your network.

The 'MYSQL_DATABASES' value has changed between the last full backup (dbteam_temp.tbl_addata) and the current backup ().

Alternatively, change either the save set name for scheduled backup or 'MYSQL_BACKUP_NAME' for manual backup.

When tried with specifying database , some gets backup without any error and some fails. Is this error due backup from slave server. Customer says slave server as good as production.

Any suggestions? Is it supported to backup from slave server?

Only local tape device can be used for this.It this true? because we have now configuration where tape library is connected to the biggest file server on site and NetWorker server is installed on separate server without any tape device connected to it. After configuration I found that indexes of NetWorker server and bootstrap info requires tapes to be inserted into tape device and after this fails with error message that no storage is available for this.As a workaround I made file system device and it finally saved index and bootstrap to fs device. but this is not ok for me, how I could solve this problem and to save all information to storage node ?
