I am running Centos 6.5, firefox 17.0.10. Firefox crashes when I click on Edit:Preferences:Applications. There is no crash report, the firefox window just closes. It also crashes when I click on an attachment to e-mail being read in firefox on an imap server. Don't have a clue as to what is causing this or how to fix.

    DB:2.51:Firefox Crashes 8s

Presumably this is the Centos distro version of Firefox. And you will be on Fx17 as the ESR version.

I normally use and run a Ubuntu distro (Canonical)Firefox26a Crash reports from distro versions are usually handled by your OS's on crash reporter.

Help with your OS should be sought elsewhere, however I imagine Centos keeps logs, presumably within /var/log and they will be easily viewable ether as text files or with some graphical viewer. Looking at your logs should help you discover the reason for any hang or problem and whether or not you have had a crash. Maybe reading these articles helps

Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes
You could look for about:crashes but I think you will find it does not exist on your distro version.
Avoid crashes - Tips and tricks
Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix

Consider trying Firefox reset, but close unnecessary open tabs and bookmark any sites left open and the home pages of any Firefox extensions you have installed. See the cautionary note in the following article.

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

One work around if nothing else works would be to install the Mozilla Firefox 25 Release as an additional browser. We should be in a much better position to help you with that.

(Are you in a corporate environment ? with an IT department? )

Install Firefox on Linux This installs totally separate from your distro install of Firefox.

Firefox 6.02 crashes or just disappears/closes randomly all the time after it is open for a while. It crashes randomly at any website. Firefox also never generates any crash reports after it crashes or disappears even though I have the option to generate crash reports turned on which is very frustrating. I performed virus and spyware scanning on my pc and never had any issues found. I also checked to see if I had the latest plugins and add-on's. I had this same random crashing problem with the 6.0 and 6.01 versions also.

    Hi again njdude,

No doubt you are now using Firefox 8 rather than Firefox 6. Presumably the garmin communicator plugin is only applicable to users with certain other garmin related installs. I would think it is worth starting a fresh thread for that, and maybe other Garmin users will pick it up and be able to help.

If you get crashes and can again post the crash IDs it could help.

Firefox crashes on pages with Java Applets, with a JNI (Java Native Interface) error, see console log snip below. Note that JNI is the Java technology allowing Java C bindings .. or "native" bindings.

As far as I can tell, any page with an Applet will fail. Here's a good "standard" test page from Sun:
    http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/GraphLayout/example1.html

I'm running Firefox 3.0.5, Java Standard Edition 6 .. although it will die with earlier Firefox 3 versions.

No problems with Safari and Applets, just Firefox.

Has anyone encountered this? Better yet, found a solution?

    Sorry if I wasn't clear:)

I have multiple tabs open, one of them being AOL. I click on an email to open it--the email opens in a new window, all while the other window with the tabs are still open behind it. When I finish reading the email (in that separate window), it closes out both browser windows, including the one with the open tabs and the separate window that has the email in it.

There might be some corruption with the Facebook app itself. Delete the app and redownload/install it. You will have to re-enter your login and password, but that should take care of it. I have had similiar issues a couple of times in the past few years and reinstalling has resolved it.To delete the app, touch and hold the icon till they start "shivering" and you get the red X. Ok, Im using Firefox 3.6, and for some reason, firefox crashes every time I go to a webpage containing the phrase B i g_B a n g_T h e o r y (spaces in between are so my firefox wont crash...).

I tried searching for the phrase on internet explorer, that crashed too.

I determined that "theory" has nothing to d with the problem, and that the crash only occurs when the words "B i g_B a n g" are on the page (with no spaces or underscores...)

When firefox/IE crashes, its not a traditional crash. there is no error message or javascript popup, the page simply closes out, as if I had pressed alt + f4.

also, the page containing the problem phrase doesnt crash if it is in a background tab.

    Any ideas whats wrong?

You can undo a lot of changes in the user interface and get the appearance of Firefox 3 versions.

Firefox 4 and later use a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.

During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.

If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.

Middle-click the Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.

To move the Stop and Reload buttons to their position to the left of the location bar you can use these steps:

Open the Customize window via "View Toolbars Customize"
If the menu bar is hidden on Windows or Linux use "Firefox Options Toolbar Layout"
Drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.
Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.

Yesterday Firefox crashed while I had several windows open, when I tried to restore the session it crashed again and it keeps crashing every time I try to attempt to use it (with or without restoring data).
It works for about 10-15 seconds before it closes and gives me a Crash report.

I've tried to start up i Safe mode but it still crashes almost instantly and there are no new Java updates to download.
I've tried to uninstall Firefox and then install it again, but got the same problems with the new version.

DB:2.35:Site Crashes Only When Using Amazon.Com Check-Out For Purchases. Crashes/Closes Everytime I Try To Place Order. Pls Fix?? j7

Ok, I' going to give you a few things to try:

    Completely Reinstall Firefox

Please follow these steps one by one:

Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the Uninstall Firefox article.

IMPORTANT: On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do not check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox user profile data will be removed from your computer.

After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:

    (On 32-bit Windows) C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    (On 64-bit Windows) C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
On 32-bit Windows, double-click the Program Files folder to open it.
On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the Program Files (x86) folder.

Look for a Mozilla Firefox folder. If you find one, right-click it and select Delete and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.

Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:

Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

    Reset Firefox

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

Go to Firefox Help Troubleshooting Information.
    Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

    Scan for Malware

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:

    MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
    TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
Microsoft Security Essentials (A good permanent anti-virus if you don't already have one)

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

The crashing started a few weeks ago and then I was able to download the Firefox 10 version and the crashing stopped until tonight. DB:2.33:Whats The Difference Between Keep Cookies Until I Close Firefox And Clear Cookie History When Firefox Closes? f7

In the settings for Firefox 33.0 (I am using Ubuntu 14.04 but the functionality is the same for Windows 7) there are two different ways to delete cookies when firefox closes. Or at least there seems to be.

First is the keep cookies until firefox closes

Second is to check the box to clear history when firefox closes and in the settings check cookies.

What is the difference between these two options?

I usually have both setup but I was noticing that a login was not saving for td canada trust easyweb, even though I have an exception set for it. Now I unchecked to delete cookies when clearing the history on close and the login saves correctly.

This login saves 7 cookes under easyweb.td.com and 10 cookies under td.com and I have exceptions set for both. If I clear history on close and include cookies, half of the td.com cookies are gone when I close firefox and re-open. The same is true if I don't set the exception.

So currently I cannot figure out a way to keep all the cookies if I clear cookie history when firefox closes. What is the difference when this is enabled?

DB:2.33:Whats The Difference Between Keep Cookies Until I Close Firefox And Clear Cookie History When Firefox Closes? f7

You can't use exceptions if use "Clear history when Firefox closes" because that removes all the cookies whether they have an allow exception or not.
Cookies stored as part of session data may still be kept if you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" and there is an allow exception.

You can set the browser.sessionstore.privacy_level pref to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS) on the about:config page to disable saving cookies via session restore in the sessionstore.js file.
The browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred pref is used when you do not reopen the previous session automatically via "Show my windows and tabs from last time" and uses the same values.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.
you can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

The crashes happen at a rate of one every few days, but they can happen once or more a day, if I do a lot of surfing. Firefox crashes while a page is in the middle of loading up. It also crashes when my laptop enters sleep mode, if I left a window open. Whenever I don't load anything with Firefox (i.e., when Firefox is in a quiet state on a non-sleeping mode of the laptop), there are no crashes.

The attached ID is for the latest crash that has a crash report. There have been many other crashes over the past five or so months.

The first image contains the window that shows up before Firefox closes. Firefox closes after I get rid of the window, and I can't do anything with the browser, once that little window appears. The second image contains the window that shows up 30 to 90 seconds after Firefox closes. I can still do things even after this window shows up.

Next time I see the second window, I'll click the blue underlined text for more information. I'll capture that information's image and post the image. In hindsight, I should have done that with the specific window that was captured in the second image.

Hmm, the crash id you gave doesn't seem to be working. Let's try to diagnose here without it.

What I'll ask you to do first, is to update your graphics driver. Out of date graphics software can sometimes cause weird crashes with newer versions of Firefox. If you read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers, it gives you directions for the various graphics manufacturers on how to update your drivers.

If after updating your graphics drive, Firefox 11 is still crashing, I'm going to ask you to start Firefox in Safe Mode. Sometimes extensions can trigger crashes, and testing with Safe Mode will help eliminate that from the equation.

Let me know how these steps work for you. The Firefox crashes also provides some help as well.

Working on a native Illustrator plugin that also calls to AppleScript and JavaScript scripts through the AI 10 scripting engine suite.(Using Illustrator 10 to support legacy files...)The crash only happens on Mac OS X (10.3 and 10.5) and not when same code/plugin is executed on Windows AI 10.I am programmatically opening AI documents, running AppleScripts and/or JavaScripts on them, and then when done I am trying to close the documents (without saving).Whenever I attempt to close a document through any of the following means:- through AppleScript: ...'close doc saving no'...or- through JavaScript: documents[0].close( SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES );or- through native plugin: sAIDocumentList-Close(lDoc);this works and the document closes, but then less than a second later, Illustrator 10 crashes with an unexpected error. The main thread crashes and from stack traces does not seem to be from my plugin...It is as if some other plugin or app code is receiving the notification of document close, but not handling it well.If instead I close the document manually, after my plugin does its work, through the UI with the close button on the document window, Illustrator will not crash.I know Illustrator 10 is a blast from the past for most people here, but does this trigger any distant memories of similar problems any one has seen? Thanks

That is a problem with JavaScript garbage collection and most likely a problem with memory corruption that can have a lot of causes.

    See:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools Add-ons Appearance/Themes).

Tried to retrieve crash report ID, Windows Search tells me nothing matches

Firefox crashes approximately 3 times a day, it either just stops responding or closes spontaneously. The issue started spontaneously a few weeks ago. Usually I have 5 to 10 tabs open. Whenever it happens, I either search things on Amazon, watch news (flash player) or play games (flash player). I already reinstalled Firefox and updated adobe reader, java, and flash player plugins. Do you have any other suggestions what I could try to fix this issue?

    DB:2.31:Firefox Crashes s8

Disable flash acceleration, or check if it happens in safe mode to determine if its an add on issue. Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

I am also using Firefox 3.5 on 64-bit Arch, and it crashes alot. I guess its due to flash. I use the Adblock add-on (though I do not block out flash). However, I am not 100% certain its only pages with flash that makes it crash.

It also crashes when I try to open a link to a file which is supposed to open in another program (.torrent or .mpg).

Jacob you are a god! My problem is solved. It was caused by a printer (default printer or HP printer driver - I am not sure)

Im pretty advanced PC user but I really couldnt solve this even after quite a few hours of trial and error fixing this.

For some people who might have same problem with illustrator crashing:

    I opened Jacobs web:

    http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/other.html

    ..and tried the solutions.

The one that worked for me was this:

    5. Incompatible/old printer definition file for the default printer I was trying to install a printer which my PC says is not supported because of USB 3.0 compatibility (printer is an older HP with USB 2.0 and my new Laptop doesnt have USB 2.0. I have only 4x USB 3.0 port) . That printer also stayed set as a default printer in my Windows.

So I deleted that new (non-functioning) printer from the printers list and also set the default printer back to what it was (Adobe PDF).

Opened the illustrator - and couldnt believe - It WORKS AGAIN!

Thank you very much, Jacob !

Sorry not much advice to provide at present, other than to keep your eye on the articles

    Latest Firefox issues
(and although not directly related useful information may appear in
    /forums/contributors/708122 )

The normal advice would include to upgrade from Firefox 9 to Firefox 10, but at the moment Firefox 10 itself is having problems.

    Your crash

    Report Crash ID [02cca6f5-005e-47fe-901f-99a202120207]
    Signature: nsRefPtrnsPresContext::~nsRefPtrnsPresContext() | nsThread::Dispatch(nsIRunnable*, unsigned int)
    related bug 716386

    Background Info
Firefox seems to be having problems with startup crashes. Some in Firefox 10 were initially thought to be due to malware, but now the developers are unsure. Your crash appears to be a relatively new one, and only affecting Windows and Firefox 9 (or beta versions of Firefox10).

This sort of problem will be investigated as a priority, as I see it caused over 12000 crashes over the last week.

One way of getting a working Firefox browser is to install Firefox poratble 3.6 as an additional browser. Firefox 3.6 is still supported and secure, and is probably unlikely to suffer problems with crashes.

    http://portableapps.com/news/2012-02-01_-_firefox_portable_3.6.26_released

Note, if you do report crashes by submitting crash reports your data is useful to the developers working on problems, and in some instances there is a possibility you may be emailed by them, it would help if you reply to any such emails, if you have doubts about them being genuine ask on the forum.

    General advice

General info on crashes is article : Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes and if it is not actually a crash look at Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix

Note one recent crash was solved by updating Java, and the general advice included in the above article includes updating firefox extensions and plugins.

I right-click on the image, go to "Save Image As" - the way I've done it hundreds of times before. It downloads it, but then Firefox closes completely and I get the standard crash dialog box to report it to Modzilla. It happens on other websites as well. I tried the fix for corrupt download folder (off the Modzilla website) but no joy. This only started two days ago or so. The only thing that changed was the Flash plug-in update. Not sure if that's related. I'm something of a newbie, by the way, but I know just enough to get myself in trouble!

DB:2.31:Firefox Keeps Asking If I Want To Restore Previous Session m9

Firefox keeps asking if I want to restore the previous session and this has been a problem since Firefox 4.

I have told Firefox to not save any history or cookies and also clear everything when Firefox closes, I have told it to show my homepage when Firefox is starting and I have tried deleting sessionstore.js. I use the following settings in about:config

    browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo 0
    browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo 0

    browser.sessionstore.privacy_level 2
    browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred 2
    browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash false

I'm currently using Firefox 15 beta with no add-ons on Windows Vista. Firefox sometimes doesn't ask if I want to restore the session, but only if I did close it from the drop down menu and not the x button. Firefox is closing properly.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.31:Firefox Keeps Asking If I Want To Restore Previous Session m9

Okay, that's true. What I meant was that keeping Browsing History selected under Settings in Tools Options Privacy as shown in the second image above shouldn't enable the active Restore previous session as shown in the first image above in a default new profile. i.e. the active tabs in the previous sessions aren't recoverable.

    System: Ubuntu 12.04; Firefox 30.0

After system update Firefox did not start anymore.
I uninstalled Firefox and removed the settings folder from Home directory.
    I reinstalled Firefox.
Now, Firefox starts. After approx. 5 seconds it freezes. Few seconds later Firefox closes.
    There are no error messages.

I followed some suggestions on the web:
updated Firefox and Ubuntu: same behaviour
Restart with Add-ons Disabled: same behaviour
Plugin check: Firefox crashes before page loads
there is no 'submitted' folder in ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/. I was never asked to submit a crash report.

    Thank you!

Glad you fixed the problem. Thanks for posting back.

I am not actually aware of a current working Silverlight equivalent for Ubuntu.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Since today when I start up Firefox, I get the warning that Firefox isn't working anymore. Even before I see Google (my starting page) the warning pops up. I tried many solutions, from installing again, updating to version 14.0.1, starting my PC again, even the Safe Mode isn't working. I searched on the internet for solutions, but none are working so far. I really like Firefox and want to use it again. I dont have any crash ID or reports about it, because firefox is searching for an solution, but cant find one. After that he just closes the firefox screen.

I keep getting crashes where either the app crashes and the crash log says something about osakit.framework not being found, or ReportCrash crashes, and then the app closes. This has happened in several apps, such as Cyberduck (ReportCrash), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entorage (2008) (it crashes but Microsoft's crash thing comes up with no detail whatsoever), Onyx (osakit), and many others. What is going on, and how can I fix this? Thanks!

On launch, Firefox window opens and closes straight away followed by a crash report window. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still wouldn't work. I can run it on Safe-Mode cause it wouldn't open at all.

When i start Firefox it either
    1) crashes, no crash message displayed. just closes as if nothing happened.
    2) freezes, doesn't respond to anything and i have to "kill" it with task manager because if it froze and i try to click elsewhere like to show desktop or on another task it freezes the entire computer. It freezes in 3 ways:
    1) is when i just opened it and it freezes immediately
    2) when i click on it, or start typing some address into the bar
    3) when i press enter after I've typed the URL in the address bar.
my Firefox doesn't have any add-ons, or anything else. i already re-installed it 2 times, cleared cache, history, reset all settings. still crashes

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

    https://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/09/hardware-acceleration/

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

I'm completely aware of the latest versions and understand the risks. This is about stability.

As long as this Firefox doesn't go on the web, that sounds reasonable.
