Verify you have licensing for the VirtualCetner server, VC agents, and ESX server. On the last two you should have enough to cover all the physical CPUs. Are you using the license server for all your licensing?

Hi there, we recently installed a demo copy of virtual centre to help us move some VM's from one ESX server to another. For various reasons, including not having enough time to familiarise, we couldn't get the VC to connect correctly, and it would never allow us to connect to it to manage. We now need to remove the management connection to a ESX 3.5 host, but cannot.

I followed a post to remove VMware-vpxa-2.5.0-119598, which was successfull, but still when i open a client session to my host, it tells me it's being managed by a Virtual Centre. Can anyone tell me how to manually remove the VC client, preferably without downing the server?

We have already removed the Virtual Centre software btw

AFter importing the image and I try to start the virtual machine, I see a quick Windows splash screen and then get a BSOD. The Technical Information is:

    STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBACCF528, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

It sounds like the Converter never finished all the steps. A STOP 7B error is invalid disk controller driver. Try running Converter again against that VM and just select the Reconfigure task.

    Hi.

Can someone please tell me the method for utilising the vSphere MIBs?

Is it as simple as importing the MIBs into the SNMP receiver application and then just pointing Virtual Centre at this SNMP box?

Or do I have to import the MIBs into Virtual Centre, too?

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:2.96:Monitoring / Alerting - Mib Setup 8k

If you point the vCenter Server at your SNMP trap destination, you'll see the traps with or without the MIBs. However, SNMP applications require the MIBS to properly parse the VMware vCenter SNMP trap. So you'll typically want to install them. You won't have to add the MIBs to the vCenter system.

Similar process for SNMP polling. Your SNMP client will need the MIBs to display friendly values for SNMP query responses. Otherwise you'll see more cryptic OID values. If you're not familiar with the VMware MIBs, you'll generally find this difficult to read without the MIBs imported into your SNMP application.

Have redeemed my vmtn licenses and having problems registering the esx server within virtual centre, this worked fine for the demo license!

Build ESX with a host license

Guest runs w23r1 with virtual centre and license server, firewall turned off.

Change ESX to point to the license server.

    Virtual centre points to itself

Try to register the machine into Virtual Cente and get the above error.

Anyone else seen this and how do you get round it.

DB:2.86:Distributed Virtual Switch And Virtual Centre ka

I have a question on the distributed virtual switch. As the config for the distributed virtual switch is no saved in virtual centre as opposed the standard vswitch which is saved in esx server. So if we only have a distributed virtual switch and no standard vswitches, if the virtual centre is restarted does that mean our virtual machines lose access, as the config is in the virtual centre.

    Any advise on this.

DB:2.86:Distributed Virtual Switch And Virtual Centre ka

The configuration of the distributed switch is saved to both the vSphere hosts and the vCenter database. This is to make sure that networking is not interrupted in the event of a failure of the vCenter server.

The local copy of the vDS is saved to /etc/vmware/dvsdata.db and is updated every 5 minutes.

You cannot run the VMTS Patch Manager on the same Windows box as the VC it was not designed to do this. Generally you would run it from an administration workstation.

VMTS Patch Manager has its own web server that it uses to delivr the patch to the ESX server.

You will need to uninstall it and install it on another Windows box adn then your Virtual Center server should be fine. If not then I would reinstall the VC back on the box after uninstalling the VMTS Patch Manager.

Since esxRanger integrates with VirtualCenter for things like VMotion awareness etc, we must connect with the VirtualCenter WEB Service.

When doing this, we see the WEB Service is using an incorrect user or password.

(this has nothing to do with the credentials you just entered in esxRanger at this step, this has to do with some credentials someone entered when 1st setting up VirtualCenter)

Is the VM you are trying to connect local to the ESX server, or is it across a WAN? If across a WAN, it could be related to a timeout issue which is explained in the link below. Even if it isnt, you can still manually load the VC client on that server which should make it manageable.

I am running ESX 3.02 with virtual centre with three hosts. HA/DRS and vmotion are enabled and I am able to migrate VM's from host to host.

Today I lost a host and one virtual machine migrated but one did it. THE VC is reporting that the VM is powered on but disconnected and is associated to the host that failed.

Can someone advise how I recover my VM.

DB:2.83:Recover Vm From Dead Host zs

    Great resource, thanks!

In our particular case we found a host seemingly disconnected generating a host connection state alarm because the HA agent in the cluster had an error. The host and all VMs showed up as if they were disconnected, but we could remotely (RDP, etc.) access all of the VMs. We couldn't SSH into the console, but we could ping it. We couldn't log in at the ESX terminal itself. For the local terminal, a login prompt would display but no authentication would take place. IIRC, we couldn't even enter a password.

We had a failed disk in the host. My co-worker had set it up as a RAID5 with a hot spare, but something must have really hosed up the config, because when I looked at the RAID BIOS it displayed a RAID 0 config, with a failed disk, and a hot spare that was basically useless since the adapter treated the array as RAID 0. Not sure if this was a mistake in initial setup or some kind of bad corruption.

Since we could remote into the VMs, we were able to shut them down gracefully. After that, we rebooted the host and since it had a RAID 0 array with a failed disk, there was no ESX to load. I guess we had essentially been running ESX off memory when that disk failure occurred. Pretty amazing that those VMs kept chugging along.

After the host rebooted, HA was able to detect a downed host and migrated all VMs to the other online hosts. HA brought them all back online, since its last known state of the VMs was that they were online (almost like zombie VMs).

We had one issue, however, which brought me to this thread. I missed shutting down 1 VM before the failed host reboot. So VC thought this VM was running, disconnected on the failed host and I couldn't migrate it. In reality, it had hard crashed when I rebooted the failed host and was offline.

After removing the host from VC, the VM was also removed from VC and I was able to add it back to the inventory per this thread.

    Hi

We have 3 ESX Servers clustered together on Virtual Centre 2.5. One of the ESX Server unexpectedly rebooted due to hardware fault. There were 5 VMs on that particular ESX Host.

When we check all the VMs that was residing on the affected ESX host, it was all rebooted and did not vMotion to the rest of the ESX Servers

The question is why didn't the VMs vMotion to the rest of the other servers. The rest of the ESX host have more than enough CPU and RAM to accomodate all the 5VMs

My understand of vMotion would be when a ESX host is down, all the VMs will be migrated to the other ESX hosts on the clustered.

DB:2.82:Esx 3.5 Crash But Virtual Centre Did Not Perform Vmotion On The Vms 7f

Thats right! When ESX host goes down VMOTION doesnt work, but if you have included all the ESX hosts in HA cluster, the VM's residing on the affected host will get cold migrated to powered on ESX hosts and get rebooted there!

Automatic VMOTION works only when both of your ESX hosts are powered on and DRS is configured within the cluster. I hope this helps!

When i did this the Virtual Centre said that the host took too long to reply. Then showed it as unavailable. I couldnt access any VMClients or the Host.

When i went to reboot the host locally the esx local log on worked and now it shows as disconnected. When i try to right click and connect it shows as In Progress.

The big benefit I see is being able to virtualise the VC server and add reiliency to it at the same time as well as not havning to explain to customers that they can virtualise all their Intel farm with VI3 but they'll need to leave a separate physical Windows server just for VC!

DB:2.79:Virtual Centre And Vcb In Mscs 7s

    Thanks Ken,

I will plan to use the 3rd server as a VCB server then, to keep VCB off the Microsoft Cluster running VC.

Or is it possible to have VCB installed on each of the cluster nodes (in an unclustered configuration), and zone half of my VMs to each VCB via the SAN fabric? This way if one cluster node fails, VCB will still backup half of the VMs. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

No, I don't have a link or list but any network-aware malware can move from guest to host since Microsoft Virtual PC (and every other virtual hosting solution) provide a virtual network adapter to link the guest and host OSes.

DB:2.78:Vms Network Configuration Are Lost After Importing pk

My initial problem of importing VMs is resolved. Thanks for all who helped. I just discovered a related issue when importing VMs to my new hyper-v host. My virtual machines have manual IP configuration and they get lost when importing the VMs to the new Hyper-v host. The network configuration is changed to “obtain IP configuration automatically” (DHCP enabled) which cause my VM network settings to be lost. I have two Network cards on the source and destination Hyper-v physical hosts. Both network cards are used for hyper-v virtualization. I named the virtual networks the same on both hosts. The virtual network settings are preserved like which virtual network to use and MAC Addresses (We use manually assigned MACs) but the network setting within the VMs are lost. Any ideas how to resolve this issue?Thank youKhamis

DB:2.78:Vms Network Configuration Are Lost After Importing pk

Oddly enough my VMs are now importing without losing their network configuration. I am not sure if one of the October patches fixed something on hyper-v but after patching and restarting my new Hyper-v host, I could import the new VMs and they would actually maintain their manually configured IP settings after being imported to the new hyper-v host.I am now a happy man :).

DB:2.78:Random Problem With Esx Host Disconnecting Hlep kd

    Hi all,

Just setup a new install of vmware 3.5 with virtual centre 2.5 as the management.

We have 4 Virtual machines across 2 hosts with vmotion enabled. VM01 and VM02 are the 2 separate hosts.

VM02 had 2 virtual machines located on it working happily. There were around 100 users accessing these servers at the time without a problem, Suddnely i checked the VIC and found that one of the hosts VM02 was disconnected from the virtual data centre!!

I could ping the server with a random response time of around 33ms for VM02 and for VM01 average response on ping was lt;1ms.

When i checked the host machines configuration tab i found that under storage the 2 datastores from our SAN ( ISCSI) were connected but the local stores are showing as being disconnected or not responding. I suspected a harddisk drive fault but once the server reboots everything goes back to normal and begins working fine. Obviously this cuts access to the virtual machines for the users which is a major hassle.

Its like the host cant access or looses its path to the lun for the internal hdd???

The only information in the logs before and during the problem is

    1. Grep failure during backup, boot.cfg may be missing state.tgz on modules line.

    and

    2. Virtual machine was restarted on VM01 since VM02 failed

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! I'm having a problem with my hyper-v virtual machines. The thing is that I want to export them to ahard disk driveand import them to another physical host. I have 3 hyper-v hosts being managed by System Center 2012 Virtual
Manager SP1, I cannot import all the VMs to another physical host. When I'm exporting a certain VM and tried to import it to the same host, it can be imported but when I'm trying to import it to another host, the error above keeps on appearing.
I'm saving myself from recreating and reconfiguring all of those VMs and then attaching the virtual hard disks, but if this is the only way to move them, I have no other choice but to recreate and reconfigure all my VMs. But still, I want to know
what can be the cause and what is wrong with exporting a VM from a host being managed by SCVMM and importing it to a standalone Hyper-V host.
I also tried exporting a VM from a standalone host and importing it to another host and it works fine. So I'm wondering what's causing my setup to fail on importing VMs.
Can anyone help me on this? Thank you very much and I'm looking forward for your responses. :)

DB:2.78:How To Create A Folder In The Hypervisor z1

"Hosts Clusters" is the default root directory when viewing your infrastructure via a vCenter server. Everything below that is created by the administrators. If you do not have a vCenter license for your home lab you will not see the "Hosts Clusters" directory since you will be using the VI client to connect directly to a single host and no HA/DRS clusters can exist. Without vCenter you wont be able to completely mimic the environment you have at your office, however depending on what you hope to achieve in your lab it likely isnt needed.

I have a quick question on having a virtual centre server (VC) running on a virtual machine . If HA is enabled on a cluster and the ESX host which has the virtualised virtual centre goes down, will the vm's on that esx host still power off and power on to the other esx hosts as the virtual VC will be down due to the host.

    Any ideas

    DB:2.78:Virtualised Virtual Centre 1d

HA installs as a service on the ESX hosts and runs independently of the VC, so loss of the node running the VC does not prevent the VM being started on a different host.

the only remaining problem is something like a power outage that brings all ESX hosts in a cluster down.

You can of course tell the ESX hosts to start VMs when the hosts restart, but that does not alleviate the problem of the VC and dependencies.

Here is a script that with a little configuration will identoify the hosts in a cluster hosting the various services dependencies (provided you configure it) and start up VMs in sequence, waiting for services to be running before starting the next VM.

In Virtual Centre I have two server farms. One with 3 hosts and the other with one host.

Each host has its own vmfs volume (presented SAN partition) with serveral VM's on board.

I'm wanting to be able to use VMotion to migrate some of the VM's from one host to another.

    Questions:

Is it possible to VMotion a VM from one host to another across two different vmfs volumes? Or is it the case that I need one massive SAN partition (and one massive vmfs volume) that is attached to each host in order to VMotion from one host to another?

Is it possible to VMotion a VM from one host to another when each host is in a different server farm even if the VM's reside on the same vmfs volume?

    thanks and regards

    DB:2.76:Vmotion Architecture Requirements mz

You don't have to use a single large LUN for Vmotion

to work, you could have 10 small LUNs if you wanted,

you just need to make sure that all the ESX servers

have access to the same LUNs.

And the ESX servers you want to vMotion between are in the same farm.

    William,

I thought I'd give my 2 cents on this...
Is there any particular reason as to why you are using named based virtual hosts?

Apache recommends using IP based virtual hosts over name based virtual hosts.

Go to http://httpd.apache.org/docs/dns-caveats.html and read the discussion on IP based virtual hosts and name based virtual hosts. The document describes the drawbacks to using the name-based approach.

The problem after migrating all the different components occurs when I log onto VI the page just appears blank, I can't see our cluster or any virtual machines etc etc. It's like when I first setup VMwarwe and ESX.

    So far I have:

    Installed 2003 Standard Server 2003 SP1

    Installed SQL Standard Server 2000

Created the database (with the same name as the original)

Restored the one from the proper SQL server

We currently have a VC server in our main office where we host a cluster of ESX hosts. We also have a DR site where we host another ESX cluster, so everything is visible on the VC at the main office.

We want to be able to have another VC server at the DR site that has full visibility of both clusters, so if the main office is taken out of the picture, we can still manage the clusters, ESX hosts, and VM's at DR with the alternate VC. We have synchronous replication of the LUN's containing the VM's.

    Any advice appreciated.

    DB:2.75:Multiple Virtual Centre Servers? mm

    Hi Sam

I have indeed. It works like a charm. The only caveat with this solution is that you would need an eval license for the initial DR host configuration from your production VC. subsequest changes you can then be performed via the VI client directly on the hosts.

    Configuration:

    2 x CX4-480s each running FLARE 30.000.5.509

2 x ESX hosts vSphere 4.1 (a vm host on each)

    2 x VM hosts running Windows 2008 R2

7 x LUNs (Mirrored) - 6 x RDM (one being the cluster quorum), 1 x VMFS (this holds the RDM pointer/mappings file)

The two VMs are clustered using Microsoft clustering software.

Data Centre A's CX4-480s is the MirrorView/s primary.

The 7 LUNs were created on the CX4 in Data Centre A and are presented to our VMWare Farm Storage Group for Data Centre A. They are also in the VMWare Farm Storage Group so they are visible from Data Centre B.

Data Centre B's CX4-480 is the MirrorView/s secondary.

The 7 LUNs were created on the CX4 in Data Centre B.

The Mirrors were created for each LUN pair, with Data Centre A as the primary and Data Centre B as the secondary.

The Consistency Group CG_Cluster was created and the Mirrors added.

The Data Centre B LUNs were then added to the Storage Groups in Data Centre B. Both to our VMWARE Farm Storage Group for Data Centre B and they were also put int he VMWARE Farm Storage Group so they are visible from Data Centre A.

The VMs were clustered using the Windows clustering software and the LUNs were attached.

Our problem arises with the RDM pointer/mapping file. On the primary vm in Data Centre A the file holds the RDM LUN NAA for each LUN but if when you failover with MirrorView/S the NAA is incorrect for the new RDM LUN. As such we have looked at creating a separate RDM pointer/mapping file for the secondary vm in Data Centre B.

The system is configured so the the vm in Data Centre A can see and use the LUNs in Data Centre B (if they are primary) and the vm in Data Centre B can see and use the LUNs in Data Centre A (if they are primary)

Our concerns come from the following scenario:

If we are running out of Data Centre A and if the Centre fails completely, and we find that the secondary vm in Data Centre B has been shutdown, when we go to restart it, it will not boot because it cannot see the disks in Data Centre A. We would need to remove their entries from the file before the reboot could go ahead. Then the secondary vm would start using the Data Centre B LUNS once they were promoted.

    Are we worrying unduly?

Is there an alternative neater solution without using MirrorView CE?

NB we are not discounting using MirrorView CE but we are not in position to purchase it yet, so were looking for alternatives for our Business Continuity solution.

We are looking for such a solution because our Facilities department has a want to shutdown either Data Centre almost at will and the business wants 24.7!

    Thanks for any help/advice

    Best regards

    Jo

DB:2.74:Using Mirrorview/S On A Virtual Cluster - Problems With Rdm Pointers sa

As Dynamox mentioned, you can use VMware Site Recovery Manager with the Mirrorview/S SRA to handle failover to the remote array. In this case you would not need Microsoft Cluster Services as SRM would simply bring up the same VM at the remote site. In this scenario you would replicate the VM and all of the RDMs.

If you want the granularity of Microsoft Cluster services, you can simplify this immensely by adding Cluster Enabler. Its sole purpose is to integrate with Microsoft Cluster Services to manage the Mirrorview/S (or SRDF or RecoverPoint) failover process and make the cluster failover seamless. With Cluster Enabler, MSCS initiates the mirror promotion and attaches the RDMs to the VM to bring the cluster resources online automatically.

DB:2.73:Not Enough Licenses When Adding An Esx Host (Even Though There Is) 37

Hi everyone, our company has two servers running 3.0.2 of ESX server and 2.0.2 virtual centre.

We encountered a problem whereby we were not able to deploy any new virtual machines to these two ESX servers (ESX A ESX B) that were in a DRS/HA cluster (ESX-AB).

The initial symptom was that on completion of the New virtual machine wizard the Create Virtual Machine task would hang in the Progression state and eventually time out.

As part of trying to diagnose the fault the cluster configuration was first removed. The remove cluster task hung at 33% progress for ESX A and ESX B completed and removed from the cluster, as further fault diagnosis we found that the vpxa process was not running on ESX A, so to restart this process we removed ESX A from Virtual Centre and attempted to add the host back to virtual centre. The cluster config is now removed.

Now when we try to add the host back to virtual centre, Virtual centre complains that we are not licensed to add the host even though we are. I can use VI client to connect to ESX A and I can then unlicense the ESX server which reflects in the FLEX LM license server however we still cannot get ESX A into the virtual centre server inventory. We have tried restarting the FLEX LM license service and Virtual Centre Server services but this does not make any difference. We have tried restarting ESX A but it still complains about the licensing, we've tried removing the ESX hosts and the datacentre they reside on but it still won't come into virutal centre.

After sending all the support logs to VMware, their support seem to think that the issue is related to duplicate virtual machines being registered in the hosts and they've asked me to identify any duplicate VMs on the two hosts that may be resgitered somehow, secondly they've suggested that I unregister all the VMs from both ESX A and ESX B which will cause us major downtime as you cannot unregister a powered on VM.

My thoughts on this are that we should restore the VC database back to a point where the cluster was unconfigured as I beleive the problem is that the current database has VMs registered in a HA cluster that now does not exist and thus the database is currently corrupt. Alternatively we restart with a new database.

My question is, does the the DRS/HA cluster reside solely on the database and does the ESX server not have any clue that it is part of a cluster - my thoughts are that this is right as the clustering is actually a part of Virtual Centre rather than the ESX servers?

When I use VI client to conenct directly to ESX A and create a VM it says the VM is being created on a HA datacentre rather than a the host ESX A - very confusing.

If anyone has any advice on this I would really appreciate it as a second opinion as I'm really tempted to restore the database back to when the cluster was configured.

    Regards,

    Graeme

DB:2.73:Not Enough Licenses When Adding An Esx Host (Even Though There Is) 37

What I tested was to "disconnect" the host with running vms and then "remove" it - all vms were running further. The vms and the host were no more to see in inventory and licensing (VC admin/licenses).

Then I added the host back, it came back with all running vms.

    Just an idea.

DB:2.73:Virtual Centre As A Guest And Managing Its Host as

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that if you have VC running as a guest VM you should still be able to manage its host via VC, but it was recommended not to connect to the guest's remote console.

    Have I remembered this correctly?

DB:2.73:Virtual Centre As A Guest And Managing Its Host as

We tested VC as a VM and did not have any issues. In our production environment we run VC on a hardware box and also use this server for other things not beneficial on a VM ( Backup, PDC emulator, etc )

DB:2.73:Vmware Data Centre Design Question 7f

    Hi,

I have a question regarding VMWare in the data centre.

We currently have a two-site data centre configured as ne logical DC.

Within that DC, we run multiple VRF's to allow different companies to utilise the network infrastructure.

The VRF's are separated by firewalls (both FWSM and Checkpoint).

I am being pressed by our server guys who want to host a guest server from different companies (different VRF's) on the same VM Host server.

This approach bridges firewall DMZ interfaces and I do not want to do this.

However, VMWare claim that there virtual switch product provides an "air gap" between servers so there is no security risk.

Has anyone got an opinion on this?

    Cheers

DB:2.73:Vmware Data Centre Design Question 7f

No problem. This is a very common deployment. As you know VLANs are associated to VRF's and hosting multiple VMs each on different VLANs within a single ESX Server is no problem at all.

Read the section about Virtual Switch Tagging (VST) in this document as that will be the configuration that will support this kind of deployment:

    http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns304/c649/ccmigration_09186a00807a15d0.pdf

Hope this helps. Please rate this post if helpful.

DB:2.73:Upgrading Esx Hosts Via Virtual Centre cp

It would be nice if Virtual centre had the ability to upgrade ESX hosts as part of its tasks.

Ideally you would be able to place the upgrade gz file on the Virtual Centre datastore, then shedule a time to shutdown the VMs (gracefully or not) perform the upgrade and then reboot the servers to bring them back on line.

    Thanks,

DB:2.73:Upgrading Esx Hosts Via Virtual Centre cp

The only issue I see with this is if for some reason the upgrade goes south and the admin is not there to either correct the issue or rerun the upgrade. You would then need to extend your maintenance window. If you did move your vm's with vmotion instead of shutting them down, this issue is minimized.

    Hi all,

Is there a way, either on the host, or through Virtual Centre, that I can schedule a shutdown of a host ESX server? There doesn't seem to be an option in scheduled tasks for the host, only to change the power of a VM.

DB:2.73:Cannot Access Virtual Centre Server Or Infrastructure Client jm

I am completely new to VMware and I have inadvertently powered off my virtualized virtual centre server and can no longer access it or the infrastructure client to power it on again.

The only solution I can think of is to restart the host, as the VC server is set to power on automatically but I am not sure if this will work if it's current state is powered off and there must be a better way of doing this.

Any help would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

DB:2.73:Cannot Access Virtual Centre Server Or Infrastructure Client jm

    1) Just connect to your ESX host with the VI Client.

    2) You will need local credentials on the ESX Server either root or another user and su to root.

    3) Power up the VM

I want to move a esx 3.5 server from one virtual centre to another virtual centre. The virtrual centre its currently on is 4.0 and the one I want to move to is v4.1

The esx server has currently some Virtual machines running on it. So i would remove the esx server from the current VC and then add host in the new VC.

Just wanted to confirm when I remove the esx host from one virtual centre will it bring down the virtual machines, or cause an outage of the virtual machines.

Also is there any issues from moving from one VC v4.0 to VC v4.1 with a esx 3.5.

DB:2.73:Moving Esx Between Virtual Centres zz

if you disconnect then remove your guests will not be impacted. Once the host has been removed from the old instance, you can "add host" into the new. However, if you are going to manage a VI3 Host in vCenter 4.x you'll need to keep you license server running (which I assume you have one if you are managing your VI3 guest in your vCenter 4.0.x environment).
