    DB:4.15:Sql 2005 Express And Cpu/Memory Limitations. cs

SQL Express Ed is limited to one CPU, what happens if the CPU is a dual core CPU? Does SQL Express care? Does it see a dual core as a single CPU?
As for memory, stupid question, SQL Express is limited to 1 GB RAM, if I run it on a server with say 4GB of ram packed into it, will it affect SQL Express' performance? Will SQL Express even run if there is more than 1GB available? Or will SQL Express simply ignore the extra RAM with no negative consequences?
    Thanks,
    Andy

    DB:4.15:Sql 2005 Express And Cpu/Memory Limitations. cs

On the former it should use both cores, one socket, I have not tested but thats the theory.
On memory it will help perf a little as the OS will have plenty of memory of OS work, if you install SQl Express on a machine with 1gb then SSE and the OS will compete.

I had a question about the CPU limitations of SQL express. It says limited to 1 CPU but what if I have multiple instaces since the application is a new service and runs in it 'sown memory space how is it limited to 1 CPU? does the service use multiple processors and the queris are binded to one?

    Thanks

Yes you can, but a processor licensing, you have to license all CPUs that are activated in the BIOS even if they are not used of the instance. For the Client/server this doens´t apply.

    Hi,
Do the restrictions for SQL 2005 express apply to each instance or per server?  For example, if there are two instances installed on a dual CPU machine, can each instance be configured to use 1 CPU and 1 GB of RAM?
    Thank you.

    DB:3.56:Sql 2005 Server Express - Instance Restrictions? d8

Per instance. And in fact you don't need 3 CPUs to run 3 instances, the CPU limit means that an instance is limited to using 1 CPU, so it will not make use of multilpe CPUs if present, but you can have up to 50 instances installed on one computer, each instance limited to using 1 CPU, 1GB of memory and 4GB of data files. The instances will work within those limits but share as much underlying hardware as is available.

    Hello,

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) can serve as a Subscriber for all types of replication, howeverit cannot serve as a Publisher or Distributor.
You can refer to the following article about Replcation considerations on SQL Server2005 Express edition:

As for install SQL Server on devices with OS post above, I would recommend to get support from the vendor.

I was going over this article , and was intrigued by this statement If SQL Server 2005 Express is running on Windows XP Home, it is limited to five simultaneous connections. If it is running on Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, it is limited to 10 simultaneous connections. However, these are limitations of the operating system and not of SQL Server 2005 Express.

What are simultaneous connections? Is this related to Max worker threads defined as 255 on other editions? How does underlying OS impose how many connections can be done to SQL server. And finally how many simultaneous connections can be done in Windows Server 2003?

DB:3.08:Sql Express, Operating Systems, Simultaneous Connections 8x

My understanding is that as long as the user ONLY accesses data from SQL Server, and does NOT access the host servers' other resources (files, folders, services, etc.), then the user is not required to have a CAL for the host server OS.

    Hi,

We have software that connects to a SQL database server.  The SQL database server that we will connect to will be SQL Server 2005.  We use a Microsoft Data Link (UDL) to connect to the database.  The Provider on the UDL wizard is supposed to be Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.

I installed the software that we will use on the client machine and tried to connect to a test server running SQL Server Express 2005 but could not.  I was not surprised though since the installation instructions said that SQL Server Express needs to be installed on both the client and the server.

However, our use of SQL Server Express is only in our test environment.  In our production environment we will connected to a licensed version of SQL Server 2005 (not express) hosted on a central server hosted by our I.T. group.  Since the production database will be running SQL Server 2005 instead of SQL Server Express 2005, is it still OK to use SQL Server Express on the client installation?  Are there any limitations?

Is there a free client version of SQL Server 2005 available for download?  I am double checking what needs to be installed on the client side to make things work.

Does SQL Server 2005 Express perform equal to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise?  Basically, if the hardware that both editions were deployed on was identical and configured with in conjunction with the hardware limitations that Express imposes, would the two editions perform the same when running the same querries?
I have read that SQL Express uses the same database engine but does this mean that the Express edition will perform as well as the Enterprise edition?

    DB:2.93:All Hardware Being Equal 7m

SQL Express has certain limits.  Only 1 CPU is used, only 1GB of RAM is used, no 64-bit support, databases can't be larger than 4GB.  If you're comparing SQL Express to SQL Enterprise on a hardware above these things, Enterprise will definitely be faster as it doesn't have such limits.
From a software standpoint, the only performance feature difference I'm aware of is that SQL Enterprise will consider Indexed Views when optimizing queries... any lesser version (inlcuding SQL Standard) will not do this.
There may be differences in the default configuration of the editions, too.
So, as you can see, it's a bit tricky to get an apples-to-apples comparison :-)  All things considered, though, the performance should be pretty close on small databases.

DB:2.91:Limitations Of Sql Express Edition x8

Certainly you can use it for a client/server system. The one CPU is a limit to how many resources SQL Express will use. It is also limited to the amount of memory it can use and the size of the database files.
Having said this, SQL Express contains the full capability to handle many simultaneous activities through its time slicing. In this post, Adam Machanic gives a good explantion under the topic:
Background: Threads, Threading, and Other Sewing Analogies
    http://sqlblog.com/blogs/adam_machanic/archive/2010/05/24/sql-university-parallelism-week-introduction.aspx
Once upon a time running a single-CPU SQL Server was quite common, even for big (for that time) databases. And you will still find a lot of single-CPU SQL Servers in common use, though not for today's BIG databases.

You can develop applications using all features of .Net Framework with Visual Studio Express, it doesn't limit you on the features of the framework you can use but you will miss helper tools like unit testing, code coverage tools so on.
Also for a comparison of different SQL versions you can read this article at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx

Thanks in advance!I understand express has 4 gig db limitations on database, what does this exactly means. Does it mean the mdf file can't be larger than 4G? What about ldf file? There are also 1 G of Ram and 1 CPU limitation. Is the limitation per instance? Another words if I have installed 3 instance sql express on the same machine, can each one have their own CPU, 1 G RAM and 4 G database? Will dual core be considered to be 2 cpu or one?

DB:2.83:More Questions On Sql Express sk

hi Joe,Will dual core be considered to be 2 cpu or onemulti cores and hyperthreaded cpus are counted on a socket base.. so a dual core cpu counts 1 for SQL Server, and SQLExpress will use all the available cores of the only usable (by this edition) cpu..regards

How do I upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 if I also have SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP2 already on the same box?  I installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise first, then applied SP2, then installed Visual Studio 2008 (which installed SQL Server 2005 Express).

When I try to upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 using the special Express edition of SP2, I get an error message that says None of the selected features can be installed.  I end up having to cancel the install of SP2.

I'm left with SQL Server 2005 at level 9.0.3054  and SQL Server 2005 Express at 9.0.3042.  How can I bring SQL Server Express 2005 to the same level as SQL Server 2005 Entperprise?

DB:2.83:Cannot Upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express To Sp2 After Upgrading Sql Server 2005 Enterprise To Sp2 9f

Vidhya is right.  You are on SP2 already.

Separately, the issue with the failed install is that the default instance is most likely the Enterprise Edition instance.  When upgrading via the GUI, the setup looks at the default instance only to determine whether changes are needed.  Try running your upgrade from the command-line utility instead, and specify the /instancename parameter (I think it's SQLEXPRESS).

    Good Luck!

DB:2.79:Sql Server Express Memory Usage - Windows Task Manager Mem Usage Working Set 1 Gb 9j

    Greetings SQL Gurus,
One of our clients has been experiencing performance issue and as of right now our guess is that it is at the SQL Server\Data tier that the issue is occuring at.
    System info:
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2
    Standard Edition
    Service Pack 1
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5130 @ 2.00 GHZ
    3.75 GB of RAM
    SQL Server Express 2005 edition.
    8-9 users are actively connected.
One thing we noticed is, when we look at Task Manager-- Processes tab -- Mem Usage column shows around
    1,447mb.
According to SQL Server Express Limitations, it gets only 1GB memory for the buffer pool and this is where my question comes in. Windows Task Manager is showing 1,447mb mem.usage and SQL Server Express only can use 1GB of memory. Is SQL Server is consuming
more than it can use and causing poor performance issue?
The 2nd question is: Is there a way to break down the working set usage in Task Manager for SQL Server so we can know how much is being used for Buffer Manager and how much is used for Buffer Pool?
Any comments\advise\input will greatly be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Amar

DB:2.79:Sql Server Express Memory Usage - Windows Task Manager Mem Usage Working Set 1 Gb 9j

    Amar,

I will look into the information later in the evening after I get off work but I think you may be chasing this in the wrong direction.

If SQL server is using more memory then i.e in this case over 1 GB then that will not cause performance problems. Using more memory for buffer pool will help
you to retain more pages in buffer and cause less trips to the disk which is good for performance. Since you have mentioned high cpu usage is the main problem in your case why not look at the root cause of the high cpu usage.

Find out the top 20 queries that are using the high cpu and look at their execution plans and see if there are any missing indexes, and try to optimize them
to use less resources or if they are bringing too much data.

In prior post, look at Glenns queries to find the high cpu queries.

Also note that you are on a very old build of SP2 and I would recommend taking a look at SP3 with CU8 as there have been lots of optimizations in memory management.

Do you use Stored Procedures or dynamic sql to retrieve the data?

Is your application a .NET one?  If so, you can use SMO in .NET to make the configuration change after the SQL Server Express install completes: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.configuration_members(SQL.90).aspx Or you could put it as a startup check for your application and put the value it should be set to in the app.config, which would allow your application users to custom tailor it lower if necessary for their specific workstations.  I wouldn't hard code the value for sure.Jonathan Kehayias

    Hi Tracy,

When Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is used for the Essentials databases, charts cannot be displayed in any reports that use Dundas chart control. Reports display everything but the charts (for example, the report header and footer, tabular data, and so on are displayed correctly). Charts in these reports are rendered as blank white space. The affected reports are:

    •    Alert Logging Latency
    •    Downtime Periods
    •    Most Common Alerts
    •    Most Common Events
    •    Performance
    •    Performance Detail
    •    Performance Top Instances
    •    Performance Top Objects

In addition, if you import Management Packs containing any other reports that use the Dundas chart control, such as some Operations Manager 2007 reports, the reports are similarly affected.  To generate charts, you must uninstall Essentials 2007, install a different version of SQL Server 2005 (Workgroup Edition, Standard Edition, or Enterprise Edition) on the Essentials 2007 Management Server computer, and then reinstall Essentials 2007.

Hi,We distribute SQL 2005 Express as our default database server for our own software.  We use express because we are able to install a secure named instance to which the customer cannot get direct access except through our software. Now some of our customers data is approaching the 4GB limit of Express and we are considering the best approach to accomodate the situation where they will eventually exceed it.My question is. By installing a default instance of Standard or Workgroup editions on the same server would this then remove the limitations of the Express named instances?  Some customers already have Standard installed but we don't want to put our databases into their instance because of security issues. Thus can we preserve our instance yet remove the Express performance limitations?RegardsRab

DB:2.75:Install Sql Standard Alongside An Express Named Instance am

hi Rab,the 4gb for each database limit is built into the Express edition.. there's no way to workaround that.. you can install whatever other edition of SQL Server but all databases attached to an Express edition will honour that limit.. you can only move those database to another edition to remove that limit.. IMVHO, you probably have to reconsider your security issues and allow for the eventually already available edition of SQL Server the customer could already have installed..regardshttp://www.asql.biz - DbaMgr2k - DbaMgr and further SQL Tools

DB:2.75:High Cpu And Ram Usage After Upgrade Of Wsus From 2.0 To 3.0 Sp2 3a

HelloI've recently upgraded WSUS on a Windows Server 2003 x86 SP2 machine from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 SP2 which upgraded the SQL Server 2005 Express to Windows Internal Database. Since then the WSUS console has been performing poorly. On checking the task manager I can see the sqlservr.exe process is using 50% CPU (one whole processor in my dual processor system) and a bucketload of RAM. It was using a full gigabyte, but I followed the instructions shown below to restrict this to 500mb, which has worked well. The High CPU usage remains though. Please advise if anything can be done to make the Windows Internal Database function more efficiently with WSUS.
First of all, download and install SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express to the server: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796displaylang=en.

Fire up Management Studio, and for the server to connect to, enter \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query . This will connect to the instance of the Windows Internal Database on the server.

In the Object Explorer pane on the left of Management Studio, you can then right-click on \\.\pipe\mssql... and choose Properties. Select 'Memory', and from here, you can limit the maximum RAM the Windows Internal Database is permitted to use. Note that it will always push the 'maximum', and allocate a bit more than the maximum you specify.

DB:2.75:High Cpu And Ram Usage After Upgrade Of Wsus From 2.0 To 3.0 Sp2 3a

Yes WSUS is unhappy, yes SharePoint is broken. But they're not used, unfortunately I can't find a way to turn them off within SBS2011.

Have you tried simply uninstalling the ROLES?
Aside from that advice, anything else regarding managing an SBS2011 server probably should be directed to the appropriate SBS or Windows Server forums.Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCSA, MCITP:EA, MCDBA

Hi,we have WSS 3.0 running on sql server 2005 standard.
I'd like to create copy of WSS on test server. I don't want to use full sql server, and I can't use sql express because of database limitations.
AFAIK Windows Internal Database doesn't have size limitations, so I've installed wss standalone with internal database. (Moderator Note: It doesn't)
Now I'm going to restore wss config and content to this test server.
Is it possible to restore wss this way? And what database server name should be in this case? SERVERNAME\Microsoft##SSEE ?

DB:2.74:Restore Wss 3.0 To Test Server With Windows Internal Db cc

    according to this
link you should use something like \\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query for instance name. If wss can work standalone with internal database - probably restore also will work. However I'm not 100% sure in it (I didn't try it by myself), so it would
be great if you will notify us in this forum thread for your results.Blog - http://sadomovalex.blogspot.com

DB:2.74:Attaching A Sql Express Database To Sql Server Standard Instance... sd

If I create a database in SQL Express and then copy the MDF/LDF files and attach them to a machine running SQL Server 2005 Standard - will this new database have SQL Express limitations?
Are there good reasons not to do this and create the database in SQL Server Standard using scripts generated from the SQL Express instance instead?
Basically, I'm setting up a merge replication between Standard and SQL Express for a common database and I figure attaching a copy of the database created in SQL Express is the fastest way to get this started.

DB:2.74:Attaching A Sql Express Database To Sql Server Standard Instance... sd

You can attach the file created on SQL Express to SQL Standard Edition, they are the same product and use the same file format. The limitation are specific to SQL Express, not the database file itself. In comparing copying the file and running a scirpt, I'm not aware of any particular benefits or limitations of one over the other.
From the stand point of Replication, there is no particular reason you need to do it this way. I'm guessing that you are developing locally using SQL Express and then moving your database to SQL Standard to setup your Publication. To my knowledge (I'm not a repl expert) you don't actually need to have a copy of the database on SQL Express in order to create a Subscription once you set up your Publisher on Standard. I believe you can configure things so that a database is created at the Subscriber when you initialize a new Subscription. That's obviously a question for the Repl forum if you run into issues there.

Thanks for the info. I can use the dynamic binding, although it would be nice that I can specify the cpu mask during instance installation stage.
This brings up another question, how the affinity mask works on different instances (different services / processes)? If I specify Instance #1 on CPU0, then instance #2 on CPU1, how does it work? It is said that SQL Express can only work on one CPU.
The CPU index refers to the logical CPU number, right?

DB:2.73:Cisco Tms 14.5 Vm Requirements pz

Just go with the basic TMS spec for starters.  You really only need a box that's that big if you start having lots of devices.  Then, as your environment grows, you can then determine whether you need to go to a more robust platform (external SQL server, multiple TMS boxes, etc).

Of course, this answer is based on the assumption you're not standing up a 1000 device deployment on day 1, please let us know if that's not the case.  You'll find some better hardware requirements detailed in the TMS 14.5 Install Guide.  ie, you don't need that much disk, and definately not the combination of the two... the tmsng database, even in a "large" deployment is typically only 20-30GB.

The data from your session is stored in the sqlservr.exe cache, which is why the memory usage grows. You can configure the maximum amount of memory allocated to SQL Server so it doesn't use up all of your RAM.

    Hi,
I read that there's a tecnical limit of 32767 concurrent connections for SQL 2005 Express, and that SQL 2005 Express uses only 1GB of memory. So, what's the number of practical concurrent connections SQL 2005 Express can handle? Is it 200 ,300, 0r 400...? How much memory is consumed by every connection?
    Thanks in Advance.

    DB:2.72:Concurrent Connections Limit dm

It is highly unlikely that all 210 connections will be hitting the same table at the same instant.
As long as the application is designed to handle deadlocks and minimize blocking issues, I think that you will be 'ok'.

If you can, beforehand, spin up the application on as many of the 210 computers as possible. Create a small script that accesses data, waits for a few seconds, saves, waits again, and continually looping. In a couple of hours you will have the performance information you need. (Use a copy of the database for testing...) Try to have the script mimic the testing application. Read data, wait, write data, read data, wait, etc.

I've been know to create multiple sessions on quite a few computers in order to 'stress test' an application-server environment.

    Hello Ruben,

Where are you facing issue in installing it?

For SQL Server 2005 to just install the Management Studio as a standalone you need to browse to the u201CTools\Setupu201D folder underneath the SQL Server install folder (eg. in my case of an English 64-bit install u201CDVD-ROM:\ENGLISH\SQL2005\DEVELOPER\SQL Server x64\Tools\Setupu201D) and execute u201CSqlRun_Tools.msiu201D. The Mangmenet Studio is part of the Client Tools - Management Tools.

    Hello All,
I have been working on an application which alows me to link to a picture, which is displayed in a Picture Box. Then, I mark out several areas using the click event. This draws semi transparent rectangles over the picture. The coordinates and size of each rectange are stored in a Database with a few comments (added through text boxes).
The result is intended to be used by others. They click on one of the rectangles and enter information about that particular area of the image. (Again, stored in a database).

The way I do it is to iterate through each record of coordinates (of each rectangle) and compare to the current cursor position. I assume this is heavy on CPU / Memory or something. Since I now want to increase the number of rectangles from currently 15 to a maximum of several hundred, I anticipate this could be a problem.

My initial thoughts are that I should use a customised control. However - this could cause high usage of resources if I have several hundred.

Can anyone help with any recommendations / comments:
    1. Will VB 2005 be OK for such an applcation?
    2. Can you point me in the direction of how to create a Semi Transparent control?
    3. Can anyone ceate a control for me or point me an existing one?

    4. I also use SQL Server Express edition. What are the limitations if the Database increases in size?

I have SQL Express 2008 installed and would like to use it instead of SQL Express 2005.

How do I configure the installation of Lookout such that it skips the installation of SQL Express 2005?

Are there any other steps that need to be taken in order for Lookout to properly work with SQL Express 2008?

    Thanks.

I have a similar (but not the same) issues with CITIDAL/SQL Server with version 6.6.

We often image our computer with lookout preinstalled because of the time it takes to configure one machine if we were to install one by one.

The problem we run into has to do with the CITADAL database with the base image. When the machine name is changed, the Dabase behaves abnormally. When I try to delete the old database I was not successfully at it. It gets worse as I change the machine name, etc in the default database setting.

What I would like to find out is if there is a specific sequence when it comes to installing SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 Express with Lookout 6.6. And also what needs to happen when I am deploying a machine with an image, what can be done before the SID/Machine name change and what to do after SID/Machine name is changed to location specific.

Dear Friends, Can anyone explain me the differences between the various editions of MS SQL Server? What are the limitations of MS SQL 2005 / 2008 Express Edition compared to other editions? Is there any MS SQL like Professional Edition for MS Visual Studio? As there is a different Setup for deployment between Express edition and Standard / Professional Edition, is there any thing for this MS SQL Server Express edition and other MS SQL? I'm new to Database and just started reading about MS Access and  Database Programming. So, please help / teach me ! Thanks VKSBK.

See the following:http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/editions-compare.aspxThere is also SQL Server Compact Edition which is file based like Microsoft Access instead of server based like the other editions of SQL Server.http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/compact.aspxYes, deployment would be different depending upon the edition you would be using and the deployment method.Paul ~~~~ Microsoft MVP (Visual Basic)

SQL Server Express Tools doesn't include Profiler, so you can try this tool which is freehttps://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/this works well with SQL Server Express
You can run Profiler Trace and check which Query consumes more time and test them one by one and fix them.

    DB:2.70:Sql Server 2005 Performs 1.5 Times Slowly Than Sql 2000 11

Hi all.I have the application working on the MS SQL engine. Certain time-consuming task in the application requires 1.5 longer time on SQL Server 2005 SP2 than on SQL Server 2000 SP4  (20 minutes vs. 13). Other long tasks have similar perfomance difference. The application uses only one thread. Memory amount and disk speed is more than sufficient for this database (according to general system monitoring and testing on servers with different amount of memory and disk subsystem), CPU speed seems limiting factor. Option changes in Management Studio (amount of memory/processors available to SQL, database recovery model/compartibility level, etc) have no effect on perfomance. All SQL 2005 editions (x32/x64, Express/Std/Enterprise) seems to perform equally. I also tried to install the last SQL 2005 cumulative update but without any effect as well.Writing trace file to capture workload and using Tuning Advisor have very little effect (about 5%). And Tuning Advisor warns me that large amount of queries in the trace (about 90%) uses non-existant objects. So, the question - how can I find the source of this difference and correct it by server options tuning, without rewriting any code in the application and database, if it is possible at all? I'm not an expert in SQL Server tuning and can't imagine where should I look...

    DB:2.70:Sql Server 2005 Performs 1.5 Times Slowly Than Sql 2000 11

Both suggestions above mine are right on the money; be sure to follow through with those suggestions.

Additionally, I've seen performance degredation when moving from SQL 2000 to 2005 when the following applies:
The query/queries are parallelized to a degree that didn't occur with 2000 and it's causing a problem.
-Adjusting the cost threshold for parallelism and max degree of parallelism can sometimes fix this. Other times you may want to look at adding the MAXDOP hint to your queries.

    Tempdb layout isn't optimized
-SQL 2005 makes a lot more use of tempdb than 2000 does in my experience. If you don't have this db layed out in an optimal fashion its increased use may be creating a bottleneck.

    Thanks for all recomendations.

    Result of my tests:

    1. Add extra memory and cpu (4 cpu, 4Gb memory) - not solve problem

    2. Use external database - not solve problem

    3. Maximize data throughput for network applications (File and print sharing) - not solve problem

    3. Disable Pligins in VC Client (Update Mnager, Converter Enterprise) - not solve problem

    Solution:

Do not install Update Mnager and Converter Enterprise Clients or remove this clients from Add Remove Programms if they are installed.

DB:2.70:Re: Limitation Detail Of Oracle 10g Xe Database ff

    Two parts to this:

    1) Oracle 10gR2 Express Edition (XE) is built using the same kernel as Standard Edition and therefore follows the same basic limitations as found in the Reference manual for 10gR2 (see http://tahiti.oracle.com and click on "Oracle Database documentation, 10g Release 2 (10.2). " link - the Reference manual is on the first page that shows up)

    2) XE imposes additional limitations as described in the License documentation found at "Oracle Database Express Edition documentation, 10g Release 2 (10.2)." (again, starting from http://tahiti.oracle.com). The feature limitations and includes are spelled out in that doc, as are the physical limits - for your convenience they are

"Any use of the Oracle Database Express Edition is subject to the following limitations; 1. Express Edition is limited to a single instance on any server; 2. Express Edition may be installed on a multiple CPU server, but may only be executed on one processor in any server; 3. Express Edition may only be used to support up to 4GB of user data (not including Express Edition system data); 4. Express Edition may use up to 1 GB RAM of available memory."

Note that setting the Open Cursor (and PRocesses, etc) has an implication related to the memory, and setting these too high will unnecessarily chew up parts of your 1GB memory limit.

    Funky wrote:
    Hans,
"but may only be executed on one processor in any server"

In my experience multicore CPU are the best option for XE ... I couldn't find that XE was using just one core. In multi (real) CPU servers I saw some differences in behaviour then one CPU with multi core. Could you confirm that or deny? The multicore cache seems to help in some kinds of processing and appears to respond slightly faster. I have no hard statistics on this. These days, multicore are unavoidable. But yes, they seem to be the best.

XE has internal throttle to limit itself to about 1 CPU worth of effort (based on Oracle's definition) across all available CPU core.

We have 4GB of memory total in the Windows server 2003R2.
And have Max memoryset to 3GB or and was already on the default setting(2147483647) - no effect.
Min Memory per query was set to default and raised to 2048.

Tried querying the DB for Processes/queries taking up - but, I am a newbie and can't seem to find any issues?
( Select * from sys.sysprocesses order by cpu desc, memory, etc.)

DB:2.69:Sql 2005 High Cpu And Memory Usage After Increasing Virtual Machine Ram 11

We've had many issues where after adding vMemory to a guest the memory reservation for that guest is 1) not set to unlimited and/or 2) using the old memory reservation setting.

For instance, if moving from 1024MB to 2048MB sometimes the mem res stays at 1024MB, this makes the guest run like sh*t. You can see the memory usage in task manager, if the sum of the working sets of the processes does not approx equal the 'pf usage' this might be your problem.

I had the same problems since the last 5 days. Some Versions of the Trail are fail.
Now I had by an origin Version of VS 2008 and now it works without problems.

    Do the following Steps:

    1. Advantage: No one unintall older versions before you run the setup
1.1 But please uninstall all newer Version of SQL-Server
    2. Before you install SQL Server 2005, you have to aktivate all IIS components on your Computer
    3. Then run the setup
    4. If there is a Massage like ... not compatible...  it does not matter. You can run the setup anyway.
4.1. In the Setup you have to check all massages. If there are no errormassages then you can run the setup
    5. Important: After the Setup, you have to install the SP2 (Internet) from SQL-Server 2005
    6. Intstall also the Update from your Windows Version
    7. Have fun with SQL 2005 and VS 2008
