DB:2.88:Copying Between External Hds Through Usb Hub kx

When I tried to copy my TM backup to a new HD, I got error -36, see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2498811tstart=0.

Now I tried to copy a smaller subfolder between the old HD and the new HD, and got the same error. But the files it couldn't copy were OK; I could open and copy them. Then I tried to copy the subfolder to my main HD, and that succeeded. Here are my questions

    1. The two external HDs are connected through a USB hub. Could that be cause of the copying problems? It appears to be the issue, as whenever I try to copy large amounts of data between the disks, I get an error, but I can copy to my main HD.
    2. While I can copy the small folder to my main HD and then to the new HD, I cannot do that with the whole TM backup due to space constraints. Any suggestions?

DB:2.88:Copying Between External Hds Through Usb Hub kx

Yes, that's what I suspect now. The problem is that the MacBook Air has only one USB port, so the only way to copy between HDD is through the hub.

    Dear Gurus,

I have a few WD external HD (all USB 2.0) and recently I bought my first WD Essential SE external HD (USB 3.0 USB 2.0), however I'm having problems with it.

My laptop has 2xUSB 3.0 ports and 1xUSB 2.0; all my WD external HD (USB 2.0) works perfectly using any of those USB ports except for the WD Essential SE external HD.

The driver (WD SES Device v 1.0.9.0) was correctly installed in Windows-7 (intel core i7) as well as the WD smartware software (v 1.4.3.4). The firmware revision of the WD Essential SE external HD is 1.014

As soon as I plug the WD Essential SE external HD to the laptop in any of the USB ports, the windows system recognize it properly and also it can be seen by WD smartware software, the Quick SMART status Quick Drive Test passed normally. However, if I try to copy any file or group of files (i.e 160Mb file) from my laptop HD or from any of the other WD external HD to the WD Essential SE the operation takes forever.

Copying one file (204Mb) from any other WD to the laptop HD takes around 2 (two) sec

Same file from the laptop HD to any of the other WD external HD takes around 9 (nine) sec

Same file from laptop HD to WD Essential SE takes around 24 (twenty four) sec

Same file from WD Essential SE to laptop HD takes around 1 (one) sec

Same file from other WD external HD to WD Essential SE takes around 26 (twenty six) sec

Same file from WD Essential SE to other WD external HD takes around 10 (ten) sec

Any help you can provide is appreciated

Thanks, Teracopy software improve a lot

However speed is VERY slow, copying one folder (285Gb, 335300 files) from one WD Passport Studio (WDPS) to the WD Passport Essential SE (WDPESE) took more than 12hrs (at least it did not crash as before, GREAT!!).... any advice to find out why the low transfer speed? any way to improve it?

DB:2.73:Degraded System Performance - Possibly Caused By External Lacie Hd xs

I'm stumped over what to do to solve a serious performance problem with my iMac. Here's the setup:

Prior to today, I've been running:

An iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 17" (late 2006). The guts of it all OEM: 1 GB (2x512) RAM, 250 GB HD, SuperDrive.

A 500 GB LaCie USB 2.0 External HD.

Two external optical drives; one that can read/burn CDs and one that can read//burn DVDs/CDs. Both of these are connected via FireWire

    Operating system: Mac OS 10.4.x

Network: Wireless Airport on iMac to DLink wireless router to Sympatico DSL. Using OpenDNS

Over the last few weeks, system performance (and by this, I mean basic tasks like copying a file or selecting a menu option or switching between apps) has degraded to the point where it could take several seconds simply switching from one app to another. No new software or devices were added over this time.
Running Apple's Hard Disk Utility, I discovered some "Minor" problems on the internal hard drive. I booted up in safe mode, which automatically forces a disk repair, and, upon running disk utility again, the disk appears fine.

    Performance problems persisted.
I ran disk utility on the external drive. No problems.
Earlier this week, I decided to upgrade the OS.
The upgrade took 5+ hours to install. (I'd heard it can take a while but 5 hours seems silly).
    Performance problems persisted.
Last night, I loaded everything I needed on the internal drive and backed up to the external drive. THen I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS 10.5.6. I ran Software Update to get the latest Java machine and other updates.
Still got problems. (Copying 2 GB of files I'd backed up on my external drive back to the internal drive took more than 2 hours! via USB 2.0)
Ran Hard Disk Utility again. Everything's fine. Still have performance problems.
Shut power down on all external drives and re-booted.
Ah-ha! Now we're gettin' somewhere. Performance seems normal. System is responding to basic commands in the what seems like a normal way.
But I need those external drives. First bright idea: Perhaps it's the cheap Dyntech 5-port USB hub that's gumming things up. To test, I disconnected the hub and connected the LaCie external drive directly to the iMac.
Back to the same old problem.
Ok -- so it seems pretty clear that the iMac and the LaCie drive, which once got along famously, are now like an old married couple -- grumpy and slow to respond to each other's requests. Again -- neither the LaCie drive nor the iMac internal drive report any problems via Hard Disk Utility. Files are being successfully copied back and forth albeit at a mind-numbingly slow speed. But for all intents and purposes, so long as the iMac is attached to the LaCie drive, it has all the zip and functional usefulness of my old Centris 610.
Any and all suggestions gratefully welcomed.

DB:2.73:Degraded System Performance - Possibly Caused By External Lacie Hd xs

True unless you frequently attach and detach the drive so that indexing never is completed. To see if this may be the case with the drive attached, open Spotlight preferences, click on the Privacy tab, then drag the drive's icon into the list.

You can also try a few other things, but start by downloading and installing AppleJack - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Read instructions and run the program to do some cleanup. For other maintenance tips see:

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.

OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.

OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.

I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.

For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.

When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)

The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:

    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync

Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.

Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

I recently purchased a new AEBS, although I am not using the 802.11n functionality yet (still have a G4 PowerBook, upgrading soon). I have no problems getting online, and the reception seems fine. My problems arise when attempting to attach an external USB HD (also just purchased a LaCie Mini 500 GB USB HD/hub). I love the idea of beinig able to have a shared HD that I can access wirelessly from multiple machines, but I'm afraid I will have to return everything unless a solution arises.

I have seen many posts from people who have had trouble when trying to use USB HDs with their new AEBS, but none of the posts I have read address the issue that I am having. Here is a portion of the trouble ticket I sent to Lacie (still waiting for reply):

I have had a lot of problems trying to get this HD to function properly as a storage device on my wireless network (via my new Airport Extreme with a USB port that is meant to support this type of functionality).
Initially I was not able to get the disk image for the LaCie HD to mount on my desktop as an AirPort disk. After several power cycles and unplugging/re-plugging in cables, I can now access the disk. However, I am now unable to upload any files. Whenever I try to copy a file onto the LaCie HD (regardless of file type or size), I get an error message that says:

"You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do You want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items?"

    (choices are Stop and Continue)

Regardless of which option I choose (or as I mentioned the size or type of the file(s), I am unable to copy anything onto the LaCie HD.

    *

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Initially I had a problem just getting the drive to mount properly on my desktop. This problem magically went away (or so it seems) after trying the same remedy over and over again. However, now there's another roadblock standing in my way.

Any help or insight is much appreciated - thanks!

I suspect your issue was with the drives formatting and they have simply given you another drive formatted differently.

I'm having very slow network problems when copying files between machines on the same switch with the same protocols enabled.

I ran in to similar problems with a few Optiplex GX110's running XP and a 100mb hub. First off, XP's generic drivers for the card dont support WOL. Secondly, avoid low grade hubs. As for the slow network problem, Isolved this by A. getting the newest drivers dell had for the card/chipset, its onboard. B. you have to go to DeviceManagerNetwork Adapters3com 3c920 propertiesadvanced tabMedia Type and change it from Hardware Default to Autoselect. This fixed my particular problem. Hope it helps someone else.

The Apple Genius was conflating two things. Filevault will not corrupt any data, but it will give you issues if you attempt to repair corrupted data. Here is the issue: In the event that your filesystem becomes corrupted, you cannot repair your boot drive's file system from the recovery partition with filevault enabled. You must disable filevault first before fixing a corrupted file system on the primary (boot) partition.

    Minniemouse,

I successfully use both the Slysoft programs you mention, and actually your question is best suited to ask at THEIR forum rather than in this WD one!

Nevertheless, I will help you get started in the right direction so you will learn how I learned to use the programs:

I read the HELP file! You can, too.

So, open CloneDVD2, click on "Help" in the upper right-hand corner. Read ALL of the Help instructions, in Part 2, pay particular attention to"Output Method"where you are told how to make and save a disc image called an ISO file. Your WD media player can play these ISO files, and you can also use that ISO file to burn a DVD later if you want to.

You can also re-do your DVDs w/CloneDVD that you put on to discs and create an ISO file from them for your media player's hard drive. Once you know how to do the ISO thing, you may never burn another DVD with the programs again -- unless you want to burn one for Mickey or Goofy!

OK, you are on your own from here.

    Hello !

I`m new to Cisco Switches and i could need some help for 2950 type of switches

we have performance problems between server and client - from what i can see at the "application" level it turns out that copying a file from client to server is dead slow and from the server to the client is quite fast. we have tried different constellations of servers/clients and it`s not a problem with the client/server itself. it looks like the uplink between those 2 ciscos has asymetric speed - just like an adsl line. (i.e. rx is around 10 times faster than tx)

any hints on what`s the best way to investigate into this?

is this probably a well known problem ?

sorry for asking, but i didn`t find much help on the net and just got aware of this forum.

Besides the duplex error, what else comes to mind is whether there any "strange" QoS configuration that might do something like rate limiting. Or, if you're using fiber between the switches, whether the one path is having errors and the other isn't.

Carefully check all interface stats along the path and also see what the load looks like.

If you transfers are using TCP, check for retransmits. (I like to use TTCP.)

    Hi,

I have an external HD attached via USB to a Mac running 10.5.8. That HD contains folders, subfolders and individual items.

I need to have Finder demand a password from everyone, including myself, when adding, removing or modifying folders, subfolders and individual items from that HD.

No password should be demanded for reading or copying items from that HD.

Whenever I copy an item from the external HD and put it on my desktop, it should automatically assume all the standard permissions - I should be able to read and write on it without passwords.

In a nutshell, the script should do this

    1. Add/Delete/Modify an item/folder on the external HD: pasword
    2. Read/Copy from the external HD: no password.

The above should apply to everyone, including the owner of the HD.

    Can anyone help???????

Any kind of permissions like that cannot be enforced on an external disk - see my reply to your other topic.

DB:2.59:What's The Difference Between Input 1 And Input 2 On Sky Hd+ Box. 7j

I've been having problems with "No satellite signal" and lost signal on Input 2. Problems partially rectified by replacing the LNB but still losing input 2 intermittently.

Looking at my signal levels prompts me to ask:

What's the difference between the the 2 input signals?

Do they tune to different satellites/signal streams? The levels, as shown in the Sky settings menu, indicate that Input 1 has higher level but lower quality than Input 2.

How 'accurate' are the level indicators in the guide?

I've tried swapping the cables feeding the inputs but with no apparent change.

Any suggestions, advice or, better still, a fix will be gratefully received.

My external HD is full using time machine and my internal HD is getting full can I reformat this external HD and split my file between my external and internal and use time machine on a new big external HD and back them both up?

DB:2.59:Internal And External Hd Getting Full. ds

Excellent! Thanks so much! I was hoping this would work because my dilemma, as I stated before, was both my internal and external HDs were getting full and it seemed crazy to have to purchase a bigger internal and external HD and basically discard the existing one's. This way I just add to my storage with my old external and don't have to replace these two. Then just buy one big 2TB external and back them both up. This should keep me covered for a while. Is this the preferred build out with storage for most iMac users? What's your recommendation?

I'm experiencing a Time Machine backup error I've been able to recreate it reliably but it seems very strange. Here's what's going on:

    - TM used to work fine on that iMac; only recently have the problems surfaced (not sure if it coincides with 10.5.2 upgrade but it might)
    - Now, when I try to use TM, I get a standard error (TM failed...). Upon checking the logs it appears to fail while coping a portion of the iPhoto Library ( /Thumb32Segment.data: Operation could not be completed. OSStatus error -36).

Here's what I've done so far:

    - Wiped reformatted the external HD (which uses Firewire 400). GUID partition map
    - Rebuilt the iPhoto Library (which is about 10 GB in size)
    - I've also had problems simply copying the iPhoto Lib to the external HD (direct copy failed); however, I have no issue opening iPhoto using it, making a copy (duplicate) on the internal (system) disk or copying it across the network to another Mac.
    - I've run Disk Utility and TechTools Pro (current version) and found no problems with any files.
    - The error copying iPhoto to the external HD using the Finder indicated that the Firewire bus was reset xx times prior to the failure (and it seemed like most of the data was copied over before it failed).

I will do a few more tests - like using TM to backup to a different external HD, running Disk Warrior, testing the first external HD with another Mac using TM (to see if there's a problem with the first external HD), etc. and report on what I find.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please let me know.

I have always had my iTunes Music Folder on an external hard drive when I got my 1st 20 GB iPod, I was using an iMac G3 with a 12GB HD, so I bought an external Firewire HD just for that reason. I have moved this external to an iMac G5, and to my current Power Mac G4 (with major upgrades to processor, video, RAM, etc.), all with no problems. I have upgraded my iPod to a 60GB Color model in between all these moves, and have never had problems associating the iPod with these various computers. I recently (last weekend) upgraded the internal HD on the Power Mac G4, and installed OSX on it then pointed iTunes to the Music Folder on the external and updated the Library. No problems so far. Then yesterday, I imported 2 new CDs to iTunes and tried to transfer the new tracks to my iPod and I get the message about how this iPod is synced to another iTunes Library, and do I want to erase the iPod and sync with this Library. The only thing that has changed is the internal HD with the controlling OS and iTunes (7.4.1 yeah, I upgraded) the Music Folder is still on the external HD. Isnt there an easier way to associate the iPod with this new Library other than erasing the iPod and copying back the music? I dont remember having to do this nonsense in the past with older versions of iTunes. Theres only 2CDs worth of difference between the Library and the iPod and the problem for me is this the Power Mac G4, with all its upgrades, is still a USB 1 machine (no problems for most things, like CD DVD burning and external HD's, since Firewire 400 is more than adequate, but the dock iPods only use USB). Copying 6,000+ songs via USB 1 is going to take all night (plus all the stuff that can go wrong with a file transfer of that duration).
    Any ideas?

When copying files from our server to an external HD it is leaving out Quark documents, fonts and JPGs. All other files and folders are copying fine. This has been going on for 6 months now and we only noticed today. Anyone any idea on how to track this problem down? One common link between all files missing is they have been created or modified in some way by Quark Xpress during its "collect" process where it grabs all the files used and puts them in a folder.

I find it easier to sort out permission problems from the terminal.

Note: there is the locked attribute on a file in the finder, don't know much about this do not know how to spot in the terminal.

And if the problem does turn out to be a permission problem, you can fix things up with folder actions when a file is dropped on a folder.

My photos are in applications AND pictures. Because they are in Applications I can't move the ones in Pictures into my iPhoto library.

This all started from trying to pull 5000 pictures off an external HD that I put them on in the past and I have never organized them. Now that I have iPhoto 8 with the editing I thought it was time to do so before my library got any better. Wow!! I have spent three days with this and my video's.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.56:Sharing An External Firewire Hd Between 2 Computers z1

Yes, you can. I just answered this in another thread, and this is the way I have our computers set up at the office.
    It's just a sharing issue.

I have an iMac G5 with a FireWire HD. In the other room, a G3. In order for the G3 to access the FWHD, it must have Admin. access.
On the Mac where the ext. drive is connected, go to Sys. Prefs make sure the other user (G3) is Admin.
Then, Get Info on the ext. drive. Make sure that Ownership Perm. are Read Write, and under Details, Access and Others is also Read Write.
I do beleive that the key is the Admin. access, though. Without that, the G3 does not even see the connected FWHD.

Make sure File Sharing is ON. Then, you would just 'Connect to Server' from one to the other. You could even log in to the host as its owner.

    hope that helps

I'm trying to find an external hard drive that both my wife and I can use. I have an iBook G4, she's got a Dell laptop running Windows XP. We'll be using this mostly as back-up/extra storage.

    So my questions:

    1) Is there any real need to partition the external HD, since we'll just be copying files onto and off it (and not running programs)?

    2) Any potential problems that we might run into here? I've heard that we should format the external HD to run FAT32, and I (the mac user) will have limitations on the size of files that I can copy onto the HD. Anything else?

    3) Any recommendations for HD brands that interface nicely (ie. plug and play) with both PC (USB 2.0) and Mac (Firewire 400)?

This is for a customer; I fix PCs and MACs for a living. Please answer all 3 questions below if you are able.

Old PowerMAC G5 has non-working mouse (i.e new mouse in different USB connector fails too) PLUS Other problems too. It does boot to an account with no login Password. However Login password for user account with admin privleges has been forgotten by customer. Customer wants to get a new MAC to replace G5.

So my job is to copy user data ONLY from PowerMAC HD to a NEW external usb HD for later copy to a MAC to be purchased later.. My plan is to use Target Disk to access the PowerMAC G5 HD (i.e G5 never boots with this approach; we are seeing G5 as it's HD ONLY.

So we have a MAC laptop in the middle running OS 10.4 or higher (unknown at the moment) and I connect via firewire cable and Target Disk to the G5 and ALSO connect the new usb external HD. It then use Disk Utility to reformat the external usb HD to Apple OS extended. And also wipe out all permissions on the external HD.

And then I drag and drop user home directories (and subfolders) from the G5 to the external HD.

HERE IS MY QUESTION: When I try to copy the user account with admin privleges which DOES HAVE A LOGIN PASSWORD OR the admin account home directories will OS X on the MAC laptop in the middle ASK ME FOR THE CORRESPONDING ACCOUNT PASSWORD or in some other way (PLEASE SPECIFY) get in the way VS just doing the copy ??

Because customer forgot the login password AND since mouse fails on G5, I cannot use an OS X install CD to wipe out the account password by booting from OS X Install CD etc etc.

SO IF THE MAC IN THE MIDDLE ASKS FOR THE LOGIN PASSWORD I am dead, I have no way of backing up the customer's data, can only back up from the user accounts with NO login password.

    (2) I am also wondering if the MAC laptop will object to copying the home directories for user accounts with NO login password.

    (3) And if the MAC in the middle objects or asks for passwords PLEASE PROVIDE A WORKAROUND if you know one. Please provide step by step instructions or a link to same as my MAC knowledge is much inferior to my PC knowledge and I probably can not "fill in the blanks"

(A package shows in Finder as a file, but is in fact many files.) Everything Aperture knows about your Images is in the Library. Ergo, if you back up your Library, you have backed up all the information about your Images. The Vault is simply a differential back-up program built into Aperture.I backup my Libraries by copying them to external drives.Your Images' Masters, however, may not be included in either a Vault or in a back-up (or copy) of your Library -- that depends on where you have told Aperture to put them. If you told Aperture to include them inside your Library (as Managed Masters), then they are included in the Vault (as well as in any backups or copies of the Library file). If, otoh, you told Aperture to store them elsewhere, then neither your Vault nor any backup or copy of your Library will include them. In that case, you are responsible for backing them up using some program other than Aperture. To restore a lost or damaged Library, you need a copy of your Library and copies of any Masters which are not included in your Library.budda42 wrote:I have my origional Aperture library on an external HD because of it's size, 180 gig. My iMac only has 320 gig, and the whole family uses it. Currently I only have my masters (origional library) on this one external drive, then I do backups onto dvd's.Are your Images' Masters Managed or Referenced? Let's clarify that, and then move forward.Unless you reasons to do otherwise, I suggest putting all your Masters in your Library (every Image's Master will be Managed), putting that Library on one external drive, and either copy or Vault your Library to your second external drive (and storing it apart). You didn't mention drive speed: I have seen a welcome difference between 7200 rpm drives with large caches and 5200 rpm drives with small caches. Some users can get by with FW400, but really FW800 should be the least you'd purchase. If you are using a USB connection, you are going to see performance slow enough to be unusable.

    Hello All,

I have a peculiar problem. I just installed my 2011 WDTV live, and attached 1 TB external hard drive formatted in HFS+. I can see the hard drive in finder, but I have a strange problem: As soon as I connect to the HDTV, the drive is writeable for about 5 seconds (and if I start a file transfer to the drive, it finishes), BUT, after those 5 seconds, the access becomes read-only. What is the problem? Clearly, writing is possible, otherwise I wouldn't be able to start and complete transfers within those first 5 seconds, but the disappearing of the write access so quickly is extremely annoying!

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello fellow Sharepointers:

I'm trying to copy documents between 2 https host-header site collections in different web apps and it's not working. I don't get any errors but it just doesn't work and sits there
forever. To simplify and test things, I've tried copying between 2 site collections in the same web app and still no go. Copying to document libraries within the same site collection does work. Here's some of the troubleshooting I've done:

    1. added sites to intranet zone

    2. added sites to the trusted zone

    3. tried copying documents between site collections in the same web app

Tomorrow I will try again but between 2 non-https site collections

I'm sure I'm missing something basic. Your help in solving this puzzle is greatly appreciated!

DB:2.53:Kt4v-[L] And Crc And Ata Cable Length 33

Is the length of the cable (the one that came with the motherboard) the cause of the CRC problems?

It seems so on my system.

Using the cable that came with the motherboard, on the secondary connector, I experienced crc problems only after copying files from the drive that was farthest from the mb. No problems when copying from the drive on the same cable, closer to the mb. Changed the cable (to a smaller cable) and no problems so far. Will do more testing.

So... if you experience crc see if there is any relation between crc, physical location of the source drive and physical location of the destination drive.

    Things to try:

    1. Do not use MSI's cable.

    2. Use MSI's cable but only the first connector

    My system: KT4V-L, XP2400, 2x512M Samsung, Bios 1.6, 400W, 80G HD, Liteon 48/12/48, DVD, Santa Cruz T.B.,

    Primary Master: HD
    Primary Slave: none

    Secondary Master: LiteOn
    Secondary Slave: DVD

Liteon is on the "edge" connector, farthest from the mb, and set to Master.

DVD is on the "center" connector, closest to the mb, and set to Slave.

I found there might be problems with my makbook pro 1.83g,

The disk writing reading speed has never reached 20mb/s, never,,,,,,,.

    My g5 1.6 is 43mb/s.

As I remembered, the HD inside the MBP is actually SATA 5400RPM HD, which should be fast, isn't it?

what do you think? what's your readings?

Looks normal to me. Check out others scores. Just remember, Notebook drives (2.5") are usually slower than Desktop drives (3.5"). Also, I always run the test a second time immediately after the first, just to make sure the drive is awake and ready. If the drive is spun down when the test starts, you get a terrible first reading.

    - the router/cables are fine, see above (on the same router)

    - my PC (general settings/hardware) is fine, I can copy to normal external harddrives fine

I suspect this must be a driver/setting/windows issue but can't get to the bottom of it.

I'm a bit of a newbie I just had my iMac HD die this morning and am functioning at the moment off a 2 year old back-up External HD. I am thinking that rather than spring for a new iMac and have to upgrade all my software (I'm running OS Tiger), that it would be cheaper and just as well to get 2 new WD External HDs and use one as a new Back-Up and use the other as my actual "new HD."

Is this possible? What is the difference between a HD that is being used as an "external back-up" and an internal one? I had this happen 2 years ago, and the guy installed an internal Seagate 500MB HD (which cost $100), while he charged me $500-600 to do this and transfer the data. Then he had me go to Best Buy and get another $100 external 500MB HD to use as the backup (which is what I'm running off of this moment.) I do not see what the difference is between a $100 internal and a $100 external - it just seems like a racket to scare me into paying unnecessarily.

Am I wrong? Can my idea work?

Thanks in advance for your input advice!

You said nothing about your Power Source. Yes, you are thinking: what has it to do with my problem? But if all is working fine and doing it's job and the external HDD is also OK, and worked without fault in other system, then, only (I think) could be: a PSu working at it's limits and after a minute or so fail to give sufficient power or CPU temp.

DB:2.50:Question About Apple Tv And Movies On External Hd..... 8a

I have ripped my entire movie collection out for the apple tv and they play great.

    One problem......

I have them all stored on a 1TB external HD and I add them to my "Movies" Library. They are copying over and taking up all the space on my IMAC HD. My question is too fold....

    1) Can I somehow add movies to my itunes so my apple tv recognizes them without taking up space on my Imac HD?

    2) Is there a way to do this without moving my entire current Itunes library (music) over to the 1TB drive?

I am really just looking for a way to map the movies to Itunes without copying them all from the external drive to the Imac drive that the Itunes library is currently on.

    Thanks for any help.

as an alternative to what Chenks suggested, keep the +copy to+ ... option checked and option-drag the movie files from the external HD into an open iTunes window. same effect, but you don't have to remember going back into the advanced preference pane if you do want content added to the iMacs internal library.

in any case, be sure the drive is mounted before launching iTunes for the content to be playable.

I've got a 1TB external HD that's been partitioned half that's been journaled to OS X and half that is Windows Journaled... both have data.. I need to partition another piece so I get 3 drives..

Using Disk Utility... how would I make another partition onto the OS X journaled space (so basically split it in 2 to create 3 partitions) without having to start from the beginning (and so therefore copying data from the external HD onto my computer and back to the HD after partition)?

    - Thanks

    DB:2.50:Partitioning External Hd 11

In Leopard you can add a partition using the remaining space as long as you're not mounted to the drive being partitioned. How much free space do you have and how much do you need? You can't resize the existing parts on the fly, but you can add the third into the remainder.

    Hi Everyone,
I am currently using a 120GB external HD to hold all of my images and unless that HD is connected, Aperture won't find the library.
My question is: How can I move or duplicate all that information/images onto a new larger external HD without having referencing, master, metadata problems etc?
Basically I want the new HD to work as the old smaller HD has been doing.

    Thanks,
    John

DB:2.49:Aperture 2 - Moving It All From One Hd To Another. fz

I have been trying to move my aperture library from one macbook pro to a newer macbook pro. I have tried several ways of doing it. First, I upgraded the aperture on Mac-1 from 1.0 to 3.0. I have saved a copy of the Mac-1 aperture library to an external harddrive (iomega) shared folder. When I try to access the library from Mac-2, I can not access the library due to permissions issues. I have tried several times to change the permissions in the library using Mac-1 on the eternal harddrive to allow read/write access to everyone but it doesn't save.

I have also tried exporting the library and hooking the two computers up using the firewire but I have not been successful.

I could really use some help with the proper way of moving my library from Mac-1 to Mac-2. I only want to use Mac-2 for all my photos. So, I want to eventually delete the library from the Mac-1 harddrive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

DB:2.49:Help With Regards To Managing Music Libraries Between Two Computers k7

I have ordered a new Retina MBP to replace my early 2008 MBP, and have been contemplating how to manage my music libraries between both computers. My music library is about 60GB, and I don't want to keep it all on my rMBP (to save space with only 256GB available). My 2008 MBP will serve as a repository for all of my music, and regular Time Machine backups will be carried out. I also have a small, portable external drive which will also have all of my music (copied iTunes folder). The goal here is to have the music libraries on my old MBP and this external drive to be identical, for backup reasons as well as to be able to transfer music to my new rMBP when necessary. To do this, I reasoned out the following method:-Obtain new music on rMBP-Transfer folder of respective album(s) to copied iTunes folder in external HD-Connect external HD to old MBP-Open music files from external HD (they'll copy into both the iTunes library and the iTunes media folder on the old MBP)-Verify that the music files are in both placesI can also obrain new music on the old MBP and then transfer it to the external HD.This seems like somewhat of a cumbersome manner to go about this (first world problems, I know). Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to streamline, or perhaps even automate this process? I was trying to think of a way I could utilize the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, but to no avail. Again, my primary goals are as follows:-To have identical music libraries on my old MBP and the external HD-To have only a small, can't-do-without-it music library on my rMBP; I could tranfer music over as necessary or play it using the library on the external HD.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!P.

I have just purchased a 500 GB Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition. I connected the drive to my iMac without any problems. I reformatted the drive for Mac OS. I dragged the HD icon to the icon for the backup to start the copying process. For several minutes, the window indicated that files were being prepared for copying. Some 150, 000+ files later, the following messages appeared:

+The item Macintosh HD contains one or more busy items that cannot be changed.+ I had a choice of Stop or Continue; I chose Continue.

Next appeared: +One or more files have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip these?+ Once again, a choice between Stop and Continue; I chose Continue.

Then I was asked to enter my password.

I then received a message that the process could not continue because a file was in use. I clicked on "OK", and that was the end of the procedure. Nothing was copied onto the external drive. The file that was supposedly in use was some obscure file that hasn't been opened in years. I had closed all open applications prior to initiating copying.

I have tried to complete this process three times; each time the result is the same. Does anyone have any suggestions?

DB:2.49:Cannot Copy Hd To External Drive fj

You can't drag drop files in OS X like you could in OS 9 below.

That basically answers my question. In addition, I thought I would pass on this additional info. My goal was to backup my files; by attempting to drag and drop the Mac HD, I was in effect also backing up the software that is on my computer. This was not my intent; I have the original disks for that purpose. I saved some time and storage space simply by dragging/dropping the files in my account onto the external drive.

    Mission accomplished!

    Hi

    I just upgraded from a 500GB to a 1TB external,

Here is how it is set up:
-I formatted the drives with Guide Partitions, and journalled etc,
-My computer screen saver is set to 15 minutes,
-And my screen will sleep after 35,
-Hard drives are not set to sleep,
-Need password to wake from sleep or screensaver

Upon returning 3 times while away i had no problems waking the computer up by just tapping the space-bar,

But the 4th time the screen stayed black, i heard my alert sound each time i would tap th space bar, and since this (which was last night) 14 hours ago, i still can not wake up the computer.

I can see that the drives are still showing copy activity.

So rather then forcing my computer to restart and having to copy hundreds of GB all over again i figured maybe i can ask around if there is a solution or trick to waking up a iMac 24 late 2006 from deeep sleep.

    Any advise appreciated

The PC formatting to FAT32 seemed to help the transfer rate (now 3-4 MB/s) but I am still not within the region of the advertised rates. How can I speed up the transfer rate, or is it the SD card reader itself (revision 1.0) built into the laptop that is the bottleneck?

I am presently doing the following simultaneously:

    (1) Backing up data onto an external USb hard drive

    (2) playing iTunes, whereby the music files are located on another external, however FW hard drive.

No problem so far. However, when I try to copy a song from the FW hd to the iMac's desktop, it is only "preparing to copy". Obviously, I have to wait until the USB copying has been completed before it will copy the music file over.

So, why is there no write access to the FW hd while the USB is active?

    Jurgen

DB:2.48:Simultaneous Fw And Usb External Hd Operation af

    Mmm,

No problem doing this on my system, Jrgen, although the copy of the music over FW to the internal HD was a little slower than it would usually be I think.

Regardless, while booted from the iMac internal drive, I could happily simultaneously:

    - copy (using drag and drop) a 19 Gig folder of movies from the internal HD to the external USB drive

    and

copy a music file from a fw drive to the internal HD

    while

    - playing a music file located on the same external fw drive through iTunes. (in my case the iTunes "library" file is actually on the internal HD, but the music being played was ONLY on the external drive. THis, I think, is the only slight difference from your setup, and I can't see how the library file location could make a difference.)

I wonder if this could be related to the bridge in one of the drives (a familiar tale?).

The USB drive I was using for the test is a cheap "combo" drive , connected over USB2 on this occasion. The FW drive was in a high quality case with an Oxford 911 bridgeset.

    Not much help, I'm afraid.

Do the directories on all three drives check out as having "no problems" when you run DiskUtility over them? Plenty of space on the internal drive?

    Cheers

    Rod

DB:2.48:Why Are Encrypted Dmgs So Slow? Os X Bug? 33

I appreciate [Mountain] Lion's ability to encrypt entire volumes, and I make good use of that feature. There seems to be little to no performance penalty for encrypting a volume. I frequently copy files to external drives and can achieve copy speeds in the low-30's MB/s range (USB 2) regardless of whether or not the drive is encrypted. But when I copy files to an encrypted DMG the performance is terrible. I can't even get up to 10 MB/s copying the same files to the same drive. What gives? Presumably the same system of encryption is being used, right? Why is copying a file to an encrypted DMG over three times slower than copying a file to an encrypted volume??This makes a pretty big difference to me since I routinely copy a 30GB file around (virtual machine image) so it's basically the difference between the operation being done in 15 minutes vs. having to wait almost an entire hour.

DB:2.48:Why Are Encrypted Dmgs So Slow? Os X Bug? 33

I've only used sparse formats, since I use them for drive backups and they need to be hundreds of gigabytes. They used to be fast in previous versions of OS X, now they are ridiculously slow.In the meantime, I've switched to using disk encryption, so I'm writing to encrypted partitions instead of encrypted DMGs and it works fine. But I would still rather use encrypted DMGs since they would be a little more convenient in my case (easier to organize).

My question is around backup strategy.
1)Should I also be backing up my library to one of the external drives or even to both to cover a PC hard drive failure?
2)Are the final manipulated image changes stored within the library, and what happens after exporting them to Photoshop? I notice that when I save an image (Ctrl S), having opened up in CS3 from Lightroom for some external editing, there is activity in one of the external hard drives that I use as a souce of my original images. Is the external drive saving the Photoshop edited files only? What is the relationship between Lightroom and Photoshop for the purposes of saving changes? If this external hard drive were to fail, would I be unable to access my completed images? And therefore

I'm not even sure what "it" is - a firewire, USB cord, or whatever. On the right side of my laptop is a series of five or six "slots." I'm not sre what the one farthest away from me is for, but the next one is used for connecting to the Internet. The next two are not in use, and the last sizeable slot is the one I'm having problems with.

    DB:2.47: Stor.E Tv+ File Copy Problems a3

As for the Samba problem, this firmware upgrade does not solve the problem of large file transfers. Not sure actually what this software upgrade does improve as I have not noticed any material difference in performance (or shall I say non-performance). There is no information either from Toshiba on this. For copying large files, use the Microsoft RichCopy utility which you can download free from their web-site. It has the added benefit that it manages the copying process and retries in case of any dropouts.

    Message was edited by: fuddrocks

Please note that the above applies to copying large files across a network, not internal copying from a USB or disk.

    Message was edited by: fuddrocks

In case of copied files not showing up on Toshiba screen even though they are visible on a remote PC, this could be due to the file being an unsupported type (e.g. I think .ape is a problem) or the file extension is incorrect (e.g. .fla instead of .flac). In first case use Audio Converter s/w to convert files to supported audio format or, in second case, use File Renamer s/w to correct the extension.

After copying my itunes library to an external hd per the article, Back up your itunes library by copying to an external hard drive, the itunes songs in my library cannot be found. Help!! I thought that by performing this action I was copying to the hd for a backup, not removing them from my pc. How do I get them back on my pc and is it really possible to back up itunes?

DB:2.47:After Copying Itunes To An External Hd, Itunes Cannot Find Songs In Library 7a

Greg, if you copied everything over to an exHD, try this.

Press *and HOLD* the shift key while starting itunes. You should get a prompt to creat a new library or choose an existing one. If you don't get the prompt, try again and *keep holding* that shift key.

Choose "existing" and browse to the exHD, Find the iTunes Library.ITL and open it. Is all you music linked properly in that library?

    DB:2.47:Problems With G5 m1

I get unexpected problems with a dual 1.8 G5 (2 GB RAM, 2 disks inside, both 320 GB). In fact, the machine seems to break any hard drive I plug in it (via USB, eSata or internal HD). The internal hard drive hosting the system is clicking every five minutes or so, and two external hard drives are now mostly unsable (they unexpectedly unmount when copying, or they just don't mount at all). I checked them all with DiskWarrior. Some times, they can be repaired, sometimes not.

The problems appear with Tiger and Leopard as well. I lost Time Machine backups form an external hard drive (Seagate 320GB, got "keys out of order" error message in DiskUtility). The other external HD I have to put my photos (750 GB Seagate) can be used in both eSATA via Lacie PCI card and USB. Both USB and eSATA fail unexpectedly (unmount while copying) and everytime the hard drives seems to fail more and more everytime I try to use them.

I used Apple products since years '80 (SE30) and did not have problems whatsoever with previous machine and my actual macbook Pro. This G5 is getting me crazy, and I don't want to put hundreds of dollars repairing since it is worth less than 800$ actually... Is it the power supply, the logic board, a problem with electric voltage up and down? I always found solutions to problems but now, it is the first time I don't see the light... I feel like everytime I plug a hard drive in this G5, I play with fire and may loose my backups and archives!

What do you suggest? Anyone got these problems with a G5 machine?

Thank you very much for any support!

    DB:2.47:Problems With G5 m1

In fact, I still get problem with USB connected external HD, even when I remove the PCI card from the G5. I got problems before even getting this card... The internal hard drive still clicks when nothing is connected. There may be a 1% chance that I got three hard drives failing in a row... but I hope not!

We need more info. First, how is the loadbalancing setup exactly? We

need to know how the routing works, where the IPs are assigned, all

    that.

Second, it\'s not clear to me from your description if you have problems

    CU,

Well also for the GWIA you don\'t do round robinning as much as you

assign multiple MX records. It isn\'t clear he\'s done that.

DB:2.47:Problems Backing Up, Is It The Internal Hd Or The External Hd. 8j

I have an early Intel MBP with a replaced Western Digital 750Gb internal drive I installed about 2 years ago. The machine is slow and I haven't even gotten it into Snow Leopard, let alone Lion, so the time has come: wipe this drive clean and do a fresh install. I bought a new WD 2Tb external, formatted for Windows and reformatted for Mac (Mac OS Journaled I believe). When I'm copying data over, I am getting a LOT of -36 errors, data can't be read or copied. It could just be w few bad sectors on the internal drive, but I'm getting an awful lot of bad errors. Of course I have to force quit Finder when I get those errors. So copying files is becoming beyond tedious, not to mention I'm trashing whatever problematic files I can catch (none of them so far are that important). But I can't copy over 500gigs and walk away. Doing it piecemeal is painful too. I'm guessing, hoping, it's the internal drive. I doubt it's the new drive, but not sure. Any ideas on how to transfer data more efficiently or remedy the situation? I'm verifying permissions in Disk Utility now, but not sure if that will help anyway. Thanks in advance Apple Discussiion Board, Lee

DB:2.47:Problems Backing Up, Is It The Internal Hd Or The External Hd. 8j

Thanks Kappy, but there are a few things that don't quite fit. For a brand-new drive, even if it's not formatted for Mac, I've never had to zero out data to make it usable. Otherwise, I followed the procedure you mentioned above. When I was able to locate an offending file that threw the Error -36, I decided to try to copy the file locally (duplicate it on the internal HD); the duplicating failed as well. The files (in these case movies, mpg, .wmv, mov, etc.) functioned okay though and played through. As I wrote the topic last night, I was verifying permissions; this morning there are a bunch of permission errors and I'm repairing those now. I don't think this is related to permissions, but repairing anyway. Stay tuned....thanks, Lee

    DB:2.47:Cd Driver Disappearing Act! m3

This is driving me nuts, largely because there hasn't been a SCSI-related problem here before. Particulars: Beige G3/266, 192MB RAM, OS 9.1, five true SCSI devices, split between internal and external buses.

Recently I removed a SCSI hard disk from the G3's internal SCSI chain. Prior to that (internally) it had both 8.4GB ATA and 4GB SCSI hard disks as well as a 12-speed SCSI CD-ROM. Since that change the internal CD-ROM will not show up unless all devices are powered up, which had never been the case before removal of the internal hard drive. According to the Apple System Profiler the driver for device #3 will no longer be available if only the external Jaz and Zip drives are powered up, but will miraculously return if all devices are. (I have screen shots of the System Profiler's results, both before and after, if anyone wishes to see these results.)

The SCSI externals consist of a Zip 100, a Jaz 1GB, a 2GB hard disk and a Sony Spressa CD-burner. All SCSI addresses are as follows:

Internal (ATA) HD = ID 0, fixed
    External Jaz 1GB = ID 1
    External HD 2GB = ID 2
    Internal CD-ROM = ID 3, fixed
    External Zip 100 = ID 5
    External CD-burner = ID 6
Internal Mac CPU = ID 7, fixed

The cabling order for the above devices is as follows:

Internal (ATA) HD = Internal IDE cable
Internal CD-ROM = Internal SCSI cable
    1. External HD 2GB (ID 2) =
    2. External CD-burner (ID 6) =
    3. External Zip 100 (ID 5) =
    4. External Jaz 1GB (ID 1) =

Any thoughts/suggestions you folks might have for this arrangement would be appreciated.

    DB:2.47:Cd Driver Disappearing Act! m3

Glad it's solved. I had fits with the external SCSI chain on a Beige G3 at work (ZIP 100, JAZ, and scanner). All the gear arrived at the same time and I assembled stuff using cables shipped with the peripherals. The set-up required the use of an adaptor (25-50 pin or 50-25 pin --can't remember now) furnished with the JAZ to accomplish. It connected to the external SCSI port, so was the first widget in the physical chain. The chain was intermittent in function for months.

Although the chain was within prescribed lengths between devices, I decided to order all-new cabling. I found off-the-shelf cabling of the exact lengths I needed, shortening the chain by a couple of feet. I also ordered the first run of cable so I did not have to use the adaptor on the computer's port.

BINGO! The problem turned out to be the adapter. The first piece of original cable was a long and heavy SCSI-2 critter going to the JAZ. It weighed enough to pull down on the port and cause a few pins to make intermittent contact. The adaptor had clips, not screws, for securing to the computer and the whole mess was simply not up to the task.

The new rigging without the need for adaptors never gave another hint of problems.

    Hello,

I bought a late 2008 MBP 2.4GHz a month ago (new) and I am experiencing some problems since I changed HD and RAM - I changed the original HD for a Seagate 7200RPM 320GB and the original 2GB RAM for two 2GB Kensington modules. (here's a photo of the problem: http://alexmartins.tumblr.com/post/158607449)

I sent the MBP to Apple and they say that they tried everything and didn't find any problems. My question is: since I send the MBP to Apple with its original HD and RAM, could it be some kind of incompatibility? I know that the problem IT'S NOT the HD, because I get the same error the same day the MBP returned from Apple! I was copying 60GB of data between the MBP and an external HD... Could it be the 4GB Kensington RAM?

Now I have the 7200rpm Seagate HD and the original 2GB of RAM and I didn't have any problems until now...

    Thank you,
    Alex

DB:2.46:Black Screen Late 2008 Macbook Pro - Could It Be Caused By Ram? 8j

That is truly an odd situation, and has to be very disappointing to anyone who wants to run 4 GB of RAM. I hope Apple can come up with a fix for this. My older MBP has no trouble with 4 GB of RAM, and it surprises me that a newer one would.

Thanks for the stars, although I think you deserve them since you solved your problem yourself in the end.

    Happy Computing!

DB:2.46:Time Machine &Amp; Safari Dates Corrupted? ...Stuck In Time? fj

Please, an iMac late-2010, OS X 10.6.8 w/external Time Machine HD: Days ago, I noticed Safari's browsing History dates had begun listing all "Earlier" dates as Wednesday, January 5, 2011. At that moment and thinking little about it, I simply cleared the History, only to have the same problem return half-a-day's browsing history later. Taking it more seriously, I began my usual minimums: permissions repair, Safari .plist trashing, then a Safari reset (limited), etc. without success . . . moving on to DiskWarrior, Onyx, Cocktail, updated Safari v.5.1.4 to Safari 5.1.5, etc. all without success. So then I decided to try replacing a few of Safari's .plists from my current working external HD Time Machine backup and . . . the dates as I scrolled backwards in Time Machine, were all the same Wednesday, 5 January, 2011. At that point, I trashed the Finder .plist . . . again, w/no success . . . and have now run out of ideas and/or courage for what to try next. I've visually surveyed my files, both intermal HD external TM HD for other date(s) corruption and all seems fine. I then DiskWarrior'd the external TM HD finding no apparent problems. And, my OS X system is stable perfectly functional. I'm wary of trashing the Time Machine .plist for lack of knowledge and because . . . it's my backup! I do rotate drives by the week, meaning I'm fairly certain this problem has only been seen on this one backup drive . . . but I'm afraid to plug in a different one this week for fear of spreading the problem . . . as it effects Safari too. And the problem remains in Safari without the external TM HD attached, even after a Safari reset (all except for Bookmarks). . . . I just don't get the connection here between Safari Time Machine. . . . a corrupted shared library? Sorry for the long-hand, any help would be sincerely appreciated.

DB:2.46:Time Machine &Amp; Safari Dates Corrupted? ...Stuck In Time? fj

Wait . . . Solved! Solved almost immediately by Pondini. I'll explain, below. As suggested by Pondini:Go to the "Date Time" preference, then choose the "Open Language Text" preference button, then choose "Formats" . . . and see which "Region" is selected from the pull-down menu. In my case, it had somehow changed to "Custom". Changing this back to "United States" . . . in my case, did the trick. Subsequently quitting restarting Safari confirmed the History dates-fix . . . and attaching my external TM HD and checking the sidebar Restore dates re-confirmed the fix.My thanks . . . a huge relief!

When I copy large files (1GB) from the desktop to the external HD, the external HD disconnects from the computer. The transfer fails.
The external HD disappears from Windows and can no longer be accessed.

However, copying large files from the LaCie external drive back to the desktop HD works fine.
Also, copying small files from either direction works fine.

I removed the eSATA cable and connected the external HD via a USB cable to the desktop and everything works fine. So the external LaCie hard drive seems to be OK.

Therefore, the problem is copying/moving a large (1GB) file over the eSATA interface from my desktop to the external (LaCie) hard drive. Seems a write operation by a large file to the LaCie drive is causing the failure. However, small file write operations
    do not cause any problems.

I've got the same exact problem! I've got LaCie d2 quadra external HD (1TB) and finally purchased pc (Dell XPS 8300 Win7 64-bit)to support eSATA connection. I highly doubt the eSATA cable is problem. I've tried THREE different ones and get same exact results
    as stated above.
Any help would be greatly appreciated; otherwise, I'll have to go back to using USB...how disappointing.

    DB:2.45:Copying From Ps3 To Ps3? 7f

Is it possible to copy files directly from one PS3 to another?

Im buying a 2nd PS3 and want to copy the video files from my old one, onto the new one. I know I can do this via external HD, but is there a way of linking the two PS3's together and doing it that way?

Thanks, thats good to know. Looks like there are a few hoops to jump through first.

So I assume that with my new PS3 I can create and start using a new Playstation account and username if desired?
