I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.2). But my Unicode Bangla/Bengali fonts rendering no longer work. In particular, rearrangement and substitution do not work. These same fonts (AAT based) used to work on 10.5.x without any problem. Now I get ইউনিজয় instead of ইউিনজয় .

I tried to validate the fonts from Font Book. But it shows the following:

'cmap', 'hmtx', 'loca', 'post', 'sfnt', 'head', 'hhea', 'maxp', 'glyf', 'fpgm', 'prep' - all ok
    Duplicate fonts - ok
    System Validation - ok
'name' table usability - (minor problem)
    'name' table structure- (serious error)

I trashed Font Book preference and re-installed the fonts, without luck. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Is there anything wrong with the fonts themselves?

    Thanks in advance for help.

it occurred to me to try and delete all Windows Bangla fonts that I had in my machine, and only reinstall Mac OS X fonts (AAT based) from the Ekushey again. This approach worked beautifully.

Apparently there is a huge problem with font rendering in Windows 8. Text appears very blurry. Programs affected by the new rendering are: Internet Explorer 10, the modern interface (start screen), Office 2013 and other 3rd party applications
that rely on this rendering technology. There is no way to fix this problem, unless Microsoft recognizes it.

I've gathered links bellow that refer to the same problem to highlight its importance anddisplay the number of users that are affected:

The default DPI is 100% (named "smaller" in the control panel). You are supposed to keep that setting (100%), unless you want to enlarge objects and text on screen, therefore select a higher one (125% or 150% or custom). You could also enlarge objects and
text on screen by lowering the resolution through screen settings, but this is completely wrong as it would cause blurriness or the "pixeling" effect (same thing as zooming in a picture more than its original resolution).

I have a 1920x1080 monitor and DPI set to 100%. The image you just posted is excellent (sharp) with Chrome, blurry or fuzzy with Internet Explorer (same behavior with my PC).It is not awful everywhere, unless you personally dislike smaller letters or
    your eyes get tired easily.

Maybeyou are a little bit confused with the DPI settings, unless I misunderstood what you were trying to explain above.See

this image I made, it may clear things up. Thanks again!

If there are problems when hardware acceleration is enabled then try to tune the setting with this extension:

    Anti-Aliasing Tuner: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/anti-aliasing-tuner/

Try to set the gfx.content.azure.enabled pref to false or if this didn't help disable Direct2D by setting the gfx.direct2d.disabled pref to true on the about:config page and leave hardware acceleration otherwise enabled.

Your link is not helpful (I don't see a screen shot), but you might try this: Go to File | Options | Advanced: Display and check the box for "Optimize character positioning for layout rather than readability."
This affects only the screen display, not the printout. If the fonts are also printing wrong, then that would be a different issue.

While the fonts being rendered appear to be formed correctly, when compared to the same font, size, style in Word or Excel, the Word fonts are larger.

    DB:2.44:Font Rendering Differences zm

I suspect that Microsoft and Java are making two different assumptions about the size of your screen. Try this:

In Word do a print preview and set the magnification to %100 and put a piece of paper up to the screen to see how close Microsoft's assumptions are as to your screen size. When I tried this, what was supposed to be an 8 1/2 inch wide sheet of paper looked more like 9 1/2 inches wide on the screen. I think this accounts for the difference in the font sizes you see.

    Hope that made sense.

Well, those fonts look ok for me, too. So, what do you expect? If you want a crisp, sharp font display, subpixel rendering might not be for you, because it introduces a certain degree of blurryness by principle.

On his first post, he wrote: “…prs-t1 is not properly rendering indic unicode fonts (Hindi, Telugu etc). Same epub works fine in prs-t2 and it renders the fonts properly…”

Even I had the same results.

Only ReaderforPC and PRS-T1 had such font issue.
All other softwares (MS Word, MS Notepad, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Sigil, etc) and PRS-T2 are viewing Indic Unicode fonts correctly.
I had copied the “defective” text from ReaderforPC and pasted it on MS Word. But surprise! The same text on MS Word had no font issue anymore!!!!
That means: “the file is without font issue!"

The issue is on "Reader for PC" software and on PRS-T1’s firmware!

    Probable solutions.

    For Sony Software Developers:
    Correct ReaderforPC software.
    Correct PRS-T1 firmware.

DB:2.37:Some Fonts Dont Work Like They Did In Win2k sx

Yes, I'm behind the times. I have a 10 yr old DLL I wrote that mimics an even older DOS screen I/O library within the client area of a window. Needless to say, it only allows the use of fixed-width fonts. When some of the programs using
the DLL have been moved to Windows 7, there is a strange flickering that appears when a fixed-width TRUE TYPE font is used (bitmap fonts still work perfectly.) We've tracked the problem down to the fact that a single character written with ExtTextOut
is wider than it should be. I've checked the measurements three different ways (by using GetTextExtentPoint32 on a 132 character string and dividing by 132, by calling GetTextMetrics and even by using GetCharABCWidths for all 256 characters) and they
all agree that the font is the same width. But ExtTextOut is rendering the background rectangle one or two pixels wider than the font width. Either than, or it is beginning the background rendering a pixel or two to the left of the position given
in the parameters [I call it like this: ExtTextOut( hdc, r.left, r.top, ETO_OPAQUE, r, ch, 1, NULL ).] And remember, this EXACT code worked perfectly under Windows 2000, Windows XP and, with bitmap fonts on Windows 7 -- but it no longer
works correctly with fixed-width true type fonts under Windows 7.
So, my question is about how font handling needs to be changed in order to work correctly under Windows 7. I'm sure that I've made an assumption about something that was valid before, but is no longer valid. But I don't even know where to begin
looking! I'm praying someone can help!

DB:2.37:Some Fonts Dont Work Like They Did In Win2k sx

In general, for the font sizes I need to realistically support, I've found that setting the
lfQuality member of the LOGFONT struct I'm using to create my fonts to
NONANTIALIASED_QUALITY seems to fix the problem I'm seeing.
Apparently, the ClearType rendering causes something similar to kerning to occur for all of the extra partial color pixels added to smooth out the look of the font. Those extra pixels are causing the font renderer to render the font to a larger rectangle
than the font functions are reporting, causing some of the background (when the font is rendered with an opaque background) to overwrite a correctly placed adjacent character when a program is writing them one at a time. Beyond this, sometimes the font
renderer will place the added pixels to the left and right of the character cell.
UsingNONANTIALIASED_QUALITY for the fonts seems to eliminate or at least minimize the impact of ClearType on font rendering. However, odd artifacts still appear with very large font sizes and with many of the fonts available for free downloads.
If there is a better way to address this bug (I don't believe that fixed width
characters shouldever need to modify anything outside the fixed width character cell) I would very much like to hear it. Alternately, if there is a better way to emit a line of text where every character has a different foreground and background
color, I'd love to learn that, too!
Thanks to everyone here for allowing me the time to talk to myself for a week without any interruptions what-so-ever. It is now your turn to talk. Please begin...

I use the infinality packages, have really good looking font rendering in my desktop and applications, moderately nice rendering in wine (including Office menus, winecfg, etc), but the arial, calibri, etc windows fonts look really bad. The same fonts are looking good in LO Writer. But I have to use MS Office and windows fonts, beacuse I need to give the documents I create to other people, and I cannot risk to create them with LO and MS Office open them misaligned, for example.Anyway, can somebody help me fix font rendering for MS Office 2007?

    Thank you!

DB:2.37:Ms Office Font Rendering In Wine 1j

Right on, Ill go be pedantic somewhere else now..

Edit:I know an AUR package or two runs afoul of licensing for some Microsoft fonts as they are downloaded and extracted from a powerpoint viewing program. The license for that one says they can only be used for the viewing program. So that AUR package, its name escapes me now, is technically in violation of the license. So even if the fonts come straight from Microsoft the license for their use has to be examined too. It may be legal for you to download the fonts yourself and for you to tell someone else where to download them, but, it may be a violation of the license or copyright for you to download them and then give a copy to someone else.

After an uneventful upgrade to lion, I have found that on many web pages, fonts aren't rendering - I get a placeholder for a character, but it's obviously unreadable.Changing the fonts in the preferences doesn't help; and other browsers do not have this issue. Apparently the problem is because Safari's 'sandbox' doesn't allow fonts from arbitrary paths; they need to be in a system allowed path (like /Library/Fonts, /System/Library/Fonts, etc.)

I had it posted in some other thread, reposting here since it is more relevant in this forum.

I am particularly interested in the LigatureLevel.NONE value. It seems that it is no longer supported. How do I turn of ligatures in the font rendering?

My flex project involves trying to match the font rendering of Apache's Batik rendering of SVG and ligatures have been turned off in that codebase. Is there any way (even roundabout) to turn ligatures off in flash?

I am converting my ttf into a swf using a css like this:

    /* normal */ @font-face { src:url("Gara.TTF"); fontFamily: "Garamond"; fontWeight: "normal"; fontStyle: "normal"; cff: true;}

    Thanks,

    Om

DB:2.36:How To Not Show Any Ligatures In Fonts ap

There are 5 different tables of ligatures. When you set MINIMUM, it turns on the OpenType "required" ligatures. These are ligatures that are required for the language. In English, there aren't any, but many languages cannot be written correctly without ligatures. The ligatures themselves, however, are part of the font. Whatever ligatures the font has defined as required are what will show up when you set MINIMUM. If the font author is following the OpenType spec, this should only be ligatures required for the language.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Denesh,

As JonHP said in the link you post, in Reporting Services, it’s not supported for strikethrough text in PDF output currently.

As a workaround, we can create an image of a line and set it as the background of the tablix’s row or column to represent the strikethrough. If you can accept it, please refer to the detailed steps in the link:

    1) In the library mode we can no longer view by Icon, only list. I like using both. Any chance the Icon list could be restored? If yes it would be great to crontrol the icon size too!

    2) With an epub document I made the font size bigger than minimum, the fonts get bigger, but the leading (space between lines) is screwed up, it does not increase as font size size went up.

    3) When viewing pdf files I set viewing with screen width, when in this mode it would be nice if cursor key scrolled down the page before changing page, currently cursor key changes page.

My guess is that you have a dark background in which case the menu items will not be seen.

I suggest you have a look here first http://www.dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#one, then resurrect the original SpryMenuBarVertical.css and change as required.

    Hello.

After upgrading of KDE4 applications to Kf5 ones, I have the font rendering problem in them.

    Its looks like that:

As you can see, rendering of cyrillic fonts is broken. Absolutely wrong font family (should be Terminus) and font size.In KDE4 apps font rendering works correctly.

Do someone have any suggestions how can I fix this?

I can see picture without any problems. May be it is regional-specific problem of image hosting.

    Chosen Solution

Note that the gfx.content.azure.enabled pref no longer has effect and you can try to disable Direct2D by setting the gfx.direct2d.disabled pref to true on the about:config page and leave hardware acceleration otherwise enabled.

See also comment 414 in bug 812695:

    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=812695#c414

That way you still have the benefit from hardware acceleration, but may not suffer from rendering issues.

    DB:2.32:Ugly Fonts Rendering With Poppler-Qt-Lcd 78

Im afraid this is a problem with the Cairo backend; the patches just create a bridge between the Qt bindings and the Cairo backend, and instruct Cairo to use subpixel rendering. Unfortunately, it doesnt always comply. Since Cairo 1.10 came out, more documents are affected. Youll notice the following comment was posted on AUR around the time Cairo 1.10 came out:

Sadly, it seems an increasing number of documents are not properly subpixel-rendered in the Cairo backend, even with these patches. Im afraid that issue is for other people with more understanding of Cairo internals to solve. (See here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3307 ).

The Microsoft fonts (ttf-ms-fonts) are smaller, given the same point size, than just about any other fonts available (DejaVu, for example). I think this has something to do with DPI and the differences between Windows and Linux font rendering systems. Is there a way using fonts.conf, or something similar, to increase the size of these fonts any time they are rendered?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldnt find anything. Thanks for any help!

DB:2.32:[Solved] Cant Use Ttf Windows Fonts In Libreoffice az

    Hi all,

Ive been a relatively amateurish Arch user for about two years now, so I do know my way around the wiki and AUR, but as far as I can tell Im the only one having this issue. I dual boot with Windows 7, and need to be able to display and use the ttf fonts from Windows 7 on my Arch partition, especially when Im using Libreoffice. Now this has always been pretty easy. Ive simply used the ttf-win7-fonts package from the AUR, but for some reason that package is no longer working. Ive also tried manually installing the fonts per the instructions on the wiki, but to no avail. No matter what I do, I just cant get Libreoffice to recognize these fonts. The cursor simply blinks as I pound away on the keyboard, and no new characters are added to the document. Something that may be relevant: My graphics chipset is an ATI HD 4350, so I have to use the [catalyst-hd234k] repository for my video driver and [xorg111] for my X server. And yes I have added the font paths to my xorg.conf file, and updated the font cache as user and as root.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,Nibbles

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the fonts are displaying just fine in other apps. Tried the following, and it didnt work either.
    pacman -Rs libreoffice

Some fonts in the latest version of Adobe Flash are terrible. They are almost unreadable!

Take a look at the fonts rendered from Adobe's own site: (Can you read what version or OS or Browser?)

I have other sites where the fonts are readable but they are still very bad.

    Please help!

Mike is correct. This is an issue that we are working with Google to resolve and the current workaround is to select the PPAPI version of the Flash Player plugin (as Mike outlined in his post above.) You can follow the progress of this bug here:

Yes, Im using the open source drivers. I tinkered with it a bit more, and Im not sure if I remember correctly, but my problem was that I hadnt included myself in the Video group. HoN itself had an outdated library, and so it was crashing because of that.

    Hi there,

I recently had a Gateway system installed, and its great. I have noticed a couple minor things with the system that I'd like to bring up. I should also say that I was given the new portals (MP2150).

On the guide today all the NFL games appear in the guide just as "NFL Football" until the cursor is placed on that block, then the actual team names are filled in on the block. This happens every time you leave the guide and coma back to it.

There is also a slight font rendering problems in the guide that I see in my system that I haven't seen on others. There are small part of the letters that are displaced from where they should be. The letters aren't rendering smoothly. I am running in 1080i, and I know its not the TV. The other fonts used in the menu system are rendering properly.

And finally this isn't a problem but more of a feature request. It would be great to be able to organize the PVR list by date recorded, instead of just alphabetically.

    Thanks

    DB:2.31:Gvim Font Rendering Glitch 9s

Hello, I am having some problems with font rendering in gvim. In a nutshell:

When entering text into the gvim command line, characters are sometimes rendered as an empty space. What is odd is that this is only happening to me with i3wm or twm, but not under awesome.

    More detail:

As an example, I just typed :e /etc/passwd but it rendered as :e /e /p d - if the window loses focus it is repainted correctly. It is not limited to specific glyphs, if I type: :eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it will render as something like : eee e eee eee ee

If I run :mes to view previous messages, the final word continue will flicker on and off, often with the cursor. From what I can tell, text is rendering correctly in the main editor pane.

This is happening with multiple fonts (Inconsolata, Fixed, Source Code Pro). Running sans vimrc (gvim -u USER -U USER) doesnt help.

    The software stack:

    gvim 7.4.16-2gtk2 2.24.20-1pango 1.34.1-1libxft 2.3.1-1i3-wm 4.6-1xorg-server 1.14.2-2xf86-video-vmware 13.0.1-1Linux jamehi03lx 3.0.94-1-lts #1 SMP Fri Aug 30 11:24:35 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

running inside VMWare Workstation 9 on Windows 7 64-bit.

Ive tried booting with 3D acceleration enabled and disabled with the same result.

    Any troubleshooting advice? Thanks.

Is it possible that the culprit is sitting somewhere in your /etc/profile.d/* and gets loaded from there? Any chance there are some leftovers you forgot about (e.g. alternative freetype runtime scripts)? Just in case, examine both local and global $SHELL config files.

When I scroll with the cursor. Sometimes it makes the words smaller on a web page. How do I fix this?

    DB:2.31:Fonts Getting Smaller 7a

    Hi tomgrendal,
    a. Was it working fine earlier?
    b. Which version of Operating system do you use?
    c. Are you using a laptop touchpad to scroll or scroll wheel of a mouse?
Method 1: Check the following setting:
    1. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, uncheck all three:

Reset text size to Medium for new windows and tabs Reset text size to Medium while Zooming Reset Zoom level to 100% for new windows and tabs
Also at the lower right hand corner of every Internet Explorer web page, there’s a Zoom control that lets you increase the size of every web page, and it stays at that Zoom setting for every page. Set that to 100%.
Method 2: Configure Internet Explorer to ignore font sizes specified on Web pages:
    1. Start Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    2. On the General tab, click Accessibility.
    3. Click to select the Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages check box. Click OK twice.
Method 3: You may uninstall the toolbars if installed any to check if the issue persists.
You can use Programs and Features to uninstall programs or to change the program's configuration by adding or removing certain options.
    1. Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.
2.Select a program, and then click Uninstall. Some programs include the option to change or repair the program in addition to uninstalling it. but many simply offer the option to uninstall. To change a program, click Change or Repair. If you are prompted
for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Hi All,

I have noticed that javahelp can take a LONG TIME to display a page of help using the default help broker, especially if the help broker has been maximized to fill the entire screen (this operation is upwards of five seconds or longer)..

Has anyone been able to improve the time of rendering a page, or are we stuck with this (rather slow) implementation?

On another note, if we are stuck with this, is there any way to busy the mouse cursor while the page is being rendered?

DB:2.31:Javahelp Takes A Long Time To Render A Page 7c

That's ok, I think we've figured out what the problem is. If you'll have a look at this bug on the bug parade:

    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4340794.html

I think you'll see what I mean. It seems to only happen on a 1.3 VM, and I don't see the problem in Linux (for whatever reason, I'm not sure).. But I tried with a 1.4 VM, and the problem disappeared, so that's good news. We will probably eventually move to 1.4 anyway.

    Hi,

Does anyone know if its possible to have openoffice render my fonts the same way as fonts are being rendered in other programs? It obviosly doesnt seem to care about the .fonts.conf file, but instead seems to have its own rendering technique, which gives me very bad font rendering. I dont know why Openoffice has chosen to do its own font rendering, but is there anyway to change that? The only option for font rendering in Openoffice is turning antialiasing on and off from a certain font size, but theres nothing about autohinter or subpixel hinting etc.

    DB:2.31:Fonts Blurry Under 10.4.5 fc

Just this morning I commented on my blog about how fantastic the font rendering was under OS 10.4.

I then installed the upgrade to 10.4.5 and the fonts all look fatter and have fuzzy edges. I've tried all the different settings in the Appearances preference pane. It's gone from looking fantastic to looking terrible.

I want my old font rendering back. Is there any way to revert the settings or drivers?

What an unusual side effect of bad permissions. Well I'm glad to hear you found the answer.

DB:2.30:Font Rendering Issue With Adobe Source Sans Pro cm

I want to use Adobe Source Sans Pro as my environment desktop font. There are 2 sources:- adobe-source-sans-pro-fonts = OTF files- ttf-google-fonts-git from AUR = TTF files

Id like to use adobe-source-sans-pro-fonts instead of ttf-google-fonts-git because its really big and I dont need all the fonts.BUTThe font rendering is ugly on my desktop with adobe-source-sans-pro-fonts (not sharp/accurate).Its nice with ttf-google-fonts-git.

What is the difference between ttf-google-fonts-git and adobe-source-sans-pro-fonts?The only difference I see is OTF and TTF files. If I open the font files manually with gnome-font-viewer, the TTF one is fine, but the OTF one is ugly.

I use xfce with font hinting enabled.

    Any idea?

After much digging around it seems that GUIText supports bitmap font rendering:

This seems to be the solution to custom font rendering.

DB:2.30:Why Does My Vertical Sub Menu No Longer Show In Ie? 1s

I created a site for a client a couple of years ago. Used a Spry vertical menu bar with sub menus. Used to work like a dream in FF, Safari, and IE. Now my client points out that the sub menus no longer work in his updated version of IE. I get the same error. I've looked through hundreds of pages in these forums and finally concede. --Thanks in advance for the help.

DB:2.30:Re: Applet No Longer Works Propperly After Jre 1.5 a1

well, this isn't mysterious at all.
You made the column exactly as wide as it was under 1.4.2, but font-rendering changed during Tiger development so maybe characters are maybe now 1-2px wider at whole.

It isn't good at all to think fonts are always exactly as wide as they are currently, its not specified anywhere how fonts are rendered and so Tiger (1.5) does very well, it breaks since it does not fit,

So, you should better make it as wide as its currently is...

DB:2.30:Re: Applet No Longer Works Propperly After Jre 1.5 a1

Just to clarify - If you read Sun's documentation, they reserve the right to change Java's external interfaces when there's a major version change - 1.3 to 1.4 to 1.5 to ...etc, or because of a bug. If you want the program to run on the different major versions, you'll need to accomodate the difference.

DB:2.30:Preview Is Not Rendering Fonts Well In Pdfs z9

Hi,For some reason Preview is not rendering fonts well in PDFs. I have created high quality PDFs using two applications (Illustrator CS5 and Numbers '09) and in both cases the fonts are not rendering correctly in Preview. They generally look much less sharp. I am attaching screenshots below, with the original image first and then the PDF in Preview. When I look at the same PDFs in Acrobat Pro the fonts look fine, so I am presuming that the issue is with Preview. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?Thanks,Nick
