When I open Firefox after turning on CPU it crashes after about 5-10 seconds. Afterwards, it works just fine. I have done all Firefox recommended troubleshooting, to no avail. I posted this problem on another forum thread and was advised to reset Firefox. This appeared to work for a short time, but Firefox is crashing again.

Since it works the second time I open it, this is really more of a nuisance than a crucial problem. However, I do want it to work properly. Please help.

My Toshiba laptop is only a couple months old. I have checked to make sure everything is updated. Ever since I've installed Mozilla, it crashes when I open it. It will stay up for anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds before it crashes. When I open Mozilla after the crash, it works fine. I have tried all the suggested troubleshooting and am tired of waiting through that first crash to use the internet.

Also, I have next seen a Mozilla crash report window.

    Hi swissCalvin,

Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down shift while Firefox is starting up?

If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should look at Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems. If it still happens, there are a lot of good troubleshooting steps in Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes.

    Hopefully this helps!

did you use Firebug? your crash mostly related to Firebug, if you have Firebug try to restart your browser with Firebug disable

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools Add-ons Extensions Plugins" in case there are still problems.

A couple of days ago I updated my system (its been 2 weeks since the last update). After the update my firefox crashes almost instantly (even in safe-mode). First I thought its only firefox (because chromium works just fine). I tried different arch packages (firefox-28.0-1, firefox-aurora, firefox-nightly) and even the binary packaged provided by mozilla itself, all with the same result.

But the strange thing is, it nearly broke every other browser except chromium (and dillo). I tried jumanki, luakit, midori and surf (all result in a segmentation fault immediately after executing).

    Things Ive tried:

    * Different kernels (linux-lts, 3.14-5, 3.14.1-1, 3.13-7)* Different nvidia-drivers (334.21-2, 334.21-4, , 319.32-2)* Also happens with the nouveau driver* Downgrading to the state before the update (still segfaults)* Memtest86 (no errors)

I really dont have any ideas what happened, before the update everything worked fine. And afterwards (even after downgrading all packages) theres no chance for using a browser except chromium.

Im thankful for every hint and advices on what to try...

It's not so much that Firefox crashes... it is that Firefox crashes my computer. Only when I run Firefox does this happen: If I leave the computer and the screen saver comes on, then when I bring it out of screen saver and click inside my Firefox browser, BAM! Blue screen. I get the IRQL_IS_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message. Something about physical memory dump. The longer I have Firefox open the more likely this crash is. The more stuff I do in Firefox (streaming music) the more likely the crash is. Interestingly, it never crashes when I am actually using the computer or when it is in screen saver mode, only when I Ieave the machine idle, then bring it out of screen saver and go back to Firefox. Firefox has always done this on this machine, at least since I first installed it almost a year ago.

Your Firefox installation may have gotten damaged.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

    Firefox 16.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

You can also do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Every time I load up firefox or restart it, the first picture I try and save (doesn't matter where, what type or where from) firefox freezes up and if I click anywhere it does the not responding status until the picture is downloaded then it continues as if nothing happened and doesn't do it again until I restart or log off.

    I've tried:
    - Safe mode (firefox)
    - restarting (firefox)
    - restarting (computer)
    - disabling all themes and add-ons
    - resetting firefox

and nothing is fixing this. Can someone please help?

also it only shows a sliver of the green saving bar on my icon then it freezes. Not sure if that helps.

    EDIT:
It gives me this unresponsive script:

It's not inaccessible because it does save it after it goes not responsive for awhile and I just disabled the anti-virus and it still does it.

Plus I use the same anti-virus on my other computer and only this one computer does it.

    Thanks for the advice anyway.

I have Windows 7 32bit on an Asus X501A. For a while now programs will become unresponsive and display the “[program] has stopped working” message.

It usually happens at least once a day, sometimes more. Skype and Steam crash most often and are usually the first to go. Skype, Steam, Windows Media Player, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Word always stop working at the same time, regardless
of whether I was using them. If one of those programs crashes, then the rest will almost always follow.
Firefox usually will not be affected by other programs crashing, but sometimes it does stop working soon afterwards. Sometimes, Firefox will keep working until it is triggered by a specific action - usually dragging an image or trying to save a download
    - and then crashes.

Audacity, Adobe, other programs, my Wireless LAN, and Windows Explorer all crash too, though only occasionally, and usually won’t be affected by or affect any other programs. The only programs that I have never seen stop working are Sticky Notes and Notepad.

    This is immensely frustrating.

I have run chkdsk and Windows Memory Diagnostic many times and neither report any errors. Also, my antivirus (Avast) reports that everything is running as it should be.

ETA: I have no idea what's changed, but crashes seem to be ever so slightly less frequent since I ran ADWCleaner. While Skype still regularly stops working,
most of the time it isn't giving me the "program has stopped working" error, or affecting any other open programs.

Hello dickroy, your crashes ARE NOT related with malware on your computer. Try a clean re-install and after that, check firefox again.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    Windows:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.

Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

    thank you

    4.5 years of absolute stability

About 2 weeks ago, display showed artifacts, flashed black then the 'display adapter has stopped responding..'Sometimes I could continue, other times it crashed with BSoD...now I don't even see the error before crashingI've read and done almost everything, as follows (note that I'm now 24 hours free without a crash so who knows) I first noticed Adobe Flash 15 had been installed near time of start; uninstalled, etc..problem still there uninstalled firefox and reinstalled..problem happens without firefox anyway ran a registry cleaner (did this a 2nd time in safe mode, probs stupid since I had to reinstall Norton) uninstalled driver, reinstalled, upgraded, etc btw, why is only way to update this driver via Windows Update and only to version 8.773.0.0? on HP support site, they have SP59747 for version 8.892.1.1000 but I get error saying I don't meet min. reqs HP Update doesn't find any need to update, even when I was at base version on the AMD/ATI website, it appears I can download Catalyst Control Center with higher version but I had tried that, nothing fixed, so uninstalled....so I assume HP doesn't support that anyway I've recently changed the TdrDelay value in registry to 8 but I still got a crash afterwards I've run video hardware tests an awful lot....it passes almost every time, but one time I got a BSoD when it got to the 2nd test action. All tests after that have passed (ie. the last 24 hours).I cleaned out any dust
Is this all just a matter of my graphics card biting the dust? do I need to worry about a motherboard problem? a harddrive problem? or did the Adobe Flash update really start this mess, and I somehow mucked it up further and perhaps something is out of sync? again, i've run tests on everything, including a file system scan and nothing seems to reflect an issue....it's been totally random and i'm hoping the last 24 hours means it's somehow resolved.

    Other comments?

    Thx,

    Chet

Thought I'd give a quick update in case others come across this.

Anyway, I reseated the video card and memory cards to no avail. I then used BlueScreenView to see if better info in my BSOD crashes. Did a google search based on that info and tried a solution about corrupt ati video card drivers (extracting .sy_ to .sys, etc). Thought it would work but BSOD after 3 days, so I did a total restore. All going well until I installed Firefox (including Clippings and the Theme Font Size Changer). In fact, my computer literally froze right after Theme Font Size Changer. So I then restored to the night before. All going well again. Thinking it was the Theme Font Size Changer, I then installed only Firefox, Clippings add-on, and then Thunderbird. This time, within 5 minutes of installing Thunderbird, I started getting artifacts and then black screen, and then partial screen, etc, and have to hard reboot. No BSODs occured in these last 2 "crashes". So, the commonality and coincidence, happens to be with Firefox and then Clippings. I use these on my laptops, same versions, with no problem so very strange.

Anyway, I am going to run for a week (after doing another restore point) without any Mozilla products and see what happens. I will then install Thunderbird and let that go for a week, before giving Firefox one last try. Since my problems started so quickly after those 2 installs, I have to believe this is no longer a video card, overheating etc problem, but we'll see in the next week. Still strange since I've had no problems with FF or Clippings for years.

Unfortunately the linked crash report is empty (@ EMPTY: no crashing thread identified; corrupt dump) and doesn't include any data, so it is not possible to find the cause of the crash.

Did you recently submitted other crash reports that do show a crashing thread?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

You can do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

On Windows 7 running Firefox 3.6.10, I cannot print to a Windows 7 network printer. Firefox crashes every time as soon as I hit print.

However, the situation is very specific. I can print from Windows XP using Firefox 3.6.10 to a Windows 7 network printer. I can also print from Windows 7 using Firefox 3.6.10 to a Windows XP network printer. The only situation that doesn't work is using Firefox and printing from Windows 7 machine to Windows 7 machine.

Firefox is also the only program that does not print. I can print using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, MS Word, MS Excel, and every other application just fine. Firefox is exclusive in that it is the only program that crashes and refuses to print. The drivers that are being used a PostScript drivers.

I have tried multiple versions of Firefox from older ones to the Firefox 4 beta and the program crashes every time.

Again, the only time it crashes is printing from a Windows 7 client computer to a Windows 7 network printer. Printing from XP to Windows 7 and from Windows 7 to XP works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only program I've noticed the problem with is Firefox, so I'm assuming it's a problem at the application level.

I solved the problem. It ended up being a driver issue. I was using the correct most up to date PS driver for the printer and it worked with every application but Firefox. When I switched to the manufacturers Universal Print PS drivers, it worked perfectly fine in Firefox as well as all the other applications.

Hope this helps anyone else who has my problem.

All 3 seem to be the same issue, something about loading fonts.

Have you tried shutting down and restarting your Mac to flush out the font cache?

Does it help to start Firefox in its Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.

I have installed a newer version of an Excel 2013 VSTO document-level customization. When I try to exit Excel with ALTF4 the Excel application crashes. If I first close the document-level customization workbook and then afterwards Excel everything works
fine. This behaviour only happens on one PC on which an older version of the Excel VSTO document-level customization was already installed, not on another PC were the document-level customization was installed the first time.
The VSTO document-level customization was developed with Visual Studio 2013 and as target .NET Framework 4.0. The version of excel is 2013.

    Hi Klaus,
    OK. Next action:
First, if you install a older version on a new computer and uninstall it and then install the newer one, does Excel application crash after pressing ALTF4?
It would help us determine what caused this issue.
Second, I'm not sure whether this issue is related to environment. You could check the difference of environmentbetween this computer and other computers. For example, you could check system, Office build number and bit number.
Third, is there anything indocument close event?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

In safe mode, Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration.

    Click the menu button

    and select Options
In the Firefox Options window, click the Advanced tab, then select General.
In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
Now, close Firefox, wait a few seconds, and then start it normally. Does that allow Firefox to open properly?

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

If that doesn't fix your problems, please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View Arrange Icons by Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Try to disable Protected Mode in Flash 11.3 and above by adding the line ProtectedMode=0 to the Flash "mms.cfg" file located in one of these locations: [46]

    (Windows 32bit) C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
    (Windows 64bit) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

For example, on a Windows 7 64-bit system, open the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, copy the file "mms.cfg" to the desktop, open it in Notepad, add a new line ProtectedMode=0 and then close Notepad, saving your changes. Next, go back to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash folder, rename the original file to "mms.cfgBAK" (to save it as a backup) and then drag and drop in the modified "mms.cfg" file from the desktop. [47] [48] [49]

Note: To re-enable Flash Protected Mode, either restore a backup of the original mms.cfg file, if you saved one, or else re-edit the mms.cfg file to remove the ProtectedMode=0 l line you added. Updating Flash Player or installing a newer version does not automatically re-enable Protected Mode

    Hello,
firefox crashes after the first start after a installation in every version I've tested (3.6.25; 9.0.1; 10.0 beta). The problem also exists in the safe mode of firefox and it was detected the first time after a upgrade of the java plugin (as mentioned the problem also exists in safe mode, so the plugin could not be the mistake).

It is impossible to start firefox, except I uninstall it and with the reinstallation it works only 1(!) time.

This game i can play with every version and it's reproducable. With firefox portable it's the same.

Because the Computer is a Company-Pc it's impossible to delete McAffee Anti-Vir etc. Suite, which is always up to date. I was not able to find the siteadvisor-app from McAffee.

Now I've installed Firefox for almost 4 years on this machine, and now the problem exists, I'm sorry to contact you, but this is my only chance to get help anymore. I also have tested the knowledge base, but I was in no way successful.

I'm also sorry for my bad English, I come from Austria

I thank you in advance (for any questions you can contact me all the time),

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

    DB:2.63:Firefox V18 Keeps Crashing Every 20-30 Seconds 37

I just re-booted my machine today following a Windows update.
Since boot-up, my Firefox browser crashes about every 20 seconds.

I notice that I now have Firefox 18, and presume that the latest version became active after my re-boot.

Sometimes the carsh happens after I have opened a few tabs, sometimes when I am just entering some google search terms, and sometimes when I am doing nothing. It seems quite random but I cannot seem to use Firefox more than about a minute before it crashes again.

Sometimes, the crash automatically closes all Firefox windows, and I have to re-start.

But usually the crash, just causes Firefox to freeze. And I have to manually shutdown the Firefox process and restart it. On these occasions I have noticed that the memory used by the Firefox process continues to increase - I saw it increasing beyond 3Gb the last time. There seems to be a memory leak on these occasions. However, the extreme memory use/memory leak does not happen every time that Firefix crashes.

I just noticed that when Firefox crashed the CPU usage of the Firefox process, as reported in Windows Task Manager, is exactly 25%.
I had this same issue with a much earlier version of Firefox (I think v6 or v7) continually crashing, when the CPU usage hit 25% - I reported that error at the time, and a new version was released shortly afterwards.

    DB:2.63:Firefox V18 Keeps Crashing Every 20-30 Seconds 37

The issue was NOT resolved. Not for 'me' anyway.

The only solution was to remove Firefox v18 and re-install v17, which was, and is again, stable :-)

I have since read a possible conflict with an application called 'Sticky passwords' which I DO use, but I didn't get the chance of testing that.

I am currently, happily using Firefox v17 without any issues.

I am being asked to upgrade to v19, but it states that the current version fo Sticky Passwords is NOT compatible, so I am not going to upgrade Firefox until SP has been upgraded.

Firefox is able to load in safe mode, but if I have to browse in safe mode I might as well use Google Chrome because it still works and can have addons. The only thing I can think of that I changed recently was I updated my NVIDIA drivers to version 285.79 Beta yesterday. I had 5.0 for the first crash and updated to 8.0.2 thinking it may fix the problem. I do not have any of the programs that frequently cause crashes.

    Chosen Solution

Looks like a problem with Direct2D.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.

Tools Options Advanced General Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Safe mode, disabling plugins, and of course updating software and drivers, and checking for malware.

Do you always get the same crash signature, if not please paste a couple of other recent ones into your answer.

I don't know what to do. Firefox 14.0.1 crashes repeatedly (no Crash Reporter appears - and I do not have any extensions installed):

    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38t=2511743

I've tried Safe Mode, making new profiles, as well as setting my homepage to about:blank.

I also tried Firefox 15.0b4 - but it only ran the first time. After that it wouldn't start. I mean, firefox.exe would start, but no browser would show up.

    I'm using Windows 7.

For the past three day Firefox has been crashing at random times. I rebooted my computer, ran a virus scan, disabled add-ons, reset my preferences, ran it in safe mode, and it still crashes. Originally I thought it was only crashing on Omegle.com, but it doesn't matter what site I'm on, after a random period of time it just crashes.

Try to Disable this software from it's User Interface (Disable its Plugins in Firefox too from the software's GUI), Restart your system, Start Firefox and check if Firefox still crashes.

    Hello.

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode (don't forget to select Disable all add-ons when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and this one for plugins.

If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.

If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

    Hey gwrowe1969,

Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

There is also a lot of useful stuff in the Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes Knowledge Base article.

    Hopefully this helps!

Firefox has started to close a few seconds after opening. This only happens the first time after starting PC. I get no error message, no 'closing multiple tabs' message etc.

    Also, no crash report logged

    I've tried:
    Firefox reset
    Uninstall, delete Mozilla folder, re-install
    Safe mode
    All add ons/plugins off
    TDSS Killer
    Malewarebytes
    MS Security essentials scan
    ADW Cleaner

    All to no avail.
Strangely, if I start Internet Explorer first, it doesn't appear to happen.. although only tried this once - had enough rebooting for now - this is the only way to initiate the problem.

Yep, looks like you nailed it with the security protection. Looks like it was some component of ASC 7 causing the problem, even though I had everything set to manual and surfing protection off. Damn, should have tried that first as it was the last thing to be installed, could have saved a fair bit of the day!

    Anyway, thanks a million
